(...) Epstein flew into a rage and asked where the airline proposed to put us [in Anchorage, Alaska] while we waited for the typhoon to blow itself away. He was not completely reassured by the captain's personally delivered promise that arrangements were in hand to put up our entire party in a downtown Anchorage hotel, probably the Westwood, one of the best in the area and well-known to airline crews. (...) Seeing that Brian was still angry, he returned later to say that he had fixed for John, Paul, George and Ringo to share the hotel's bridal suite and several equally well-appointed adjoining rooms. This caused much amusement among the four boys who instantly began proposing marriage to one another.

are there really that many bears in Alaska? asking bc you often include a very cute bear in your photo sets
It depends what part of Alaska you're in!
Juneau is absolutely overrun with Black Bears. They move around a bit, so sometimes you won't see any for days at a time, but also if you live there long enough, you're basically guaranteed to encounter a few "trash bears" just poking around garbage cans right in the downtown area. They're the hardest to see when they first start waking up because they can be anywhere, but then they get much more consistent with certain food sources. Driving past the dump, you often see them rolling around in the adjacent fields. Throughout late spring, they like to graze on the wildflowers along the roadsides, and you can often see the really little cubs with them. When the salmon run starts later in the summer, there are a few spots you can go where bears are basically a guarantee. Throughout the first 2 weeks of August and then again in the first week of September (i.e. the chum and then the pink runs), I could think to myself "I want to go see the bears today" and go see the bears. On my best day last summer, I had a total of 12-13 (with one that might have been the same bear twice).
We don't really get Brown Bears in Juneau—they show up every so often, but mostly if you want to see them in the area (and you should, because they're the really cool giant ABC Islands Bears, which are almost as big as Kodiak Bears), you need to head out to one of the islands like Admiralty, which has the world's highest bear: human population ratio (3:1!).
When I lived in Anchorage over a summer, I saw no bears around the city (though people often do!) and had to drive down the Kenai to see any Black Bears that whole year. They get Brown Bears down toward Seward and Homer too, but pretty rarely, and I've never seen one around there. On the other hand, I've never been to Denali and not seen multiple Brown Bears. And then any location you would go on trips specifically to see bears because of a seasonal food source like a salmon run (e.g. Katmai, Pack Creek by Juneau, Fish Creek in Hyder, Kodiak, Lake Clark, etc. (though I haven't done those last two yet)) will have dozens of bears around during the season.
And then there are some parts of the state (Interior and Far North) where bears are common but there is just so much space for them that you're less likely to encounter them. I have been hiking around Fairbanks a decent amount and, while you definitely have to take serious bear country precautions, I've never actually seen a bear around there. I've driven the whole Dalton Highway twice, where Brown Bears are very common, and I've only seen one over the course of a total of 8 days and almost 2000 miles covered. The Alcan route I drive on the other hand, which crosses Interior into Yukon, usually has bears—over the course of driving it three times, I've seen 5 Brown Bears and 3 Black Bears, and I've been told I had "pretty bad bear luck" on those trips (my friend Alex once had a single trip count of 9 Brown Bears and 7 Black Bears!).
I was trying to estimate the number of bears I have seen in Alaska, but it is essentially completely impossible. Definitely over 100 individuals of each species! Single days that stand out to me are that one 12 bear day in Juneau (that was at the Shrine during the end of the pink salmon run), one day driving the main road into Denali when we had a total of 22 Brown Bears and started having to drive right past them since we wanted to have time to look for other wildlife, and the only time I've been to Brooks Camp in Katmai, when we had a conservative estimate of 48 total Brown Bears.
This turned into a very long answer (can you tell I love talking about bears!) but basically: tl;dr yes there are a metric fuckton of bears in Alaska.

If you've taken pictures of moose can we see them? (!!!!!!!!! They sound so cool but also kind of scary) :D
OOH OK so I had to go WAYYY back in my family's Dropbox for these but... MOOSE BE UPON YE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the second to last one is a younger one, not quite a baby-baby but still very babyish, and the last one was a total weirdo who decided she wanted to hang out in our driveway for an entire afternoon and just lick my mom's car (they salt the roads in some places in AK iirc so the moose probably wanted The Minerals lol)
they are a little scary! however if you respect them they usually respect you as well. they're so common in AK and the North in general that most people are used to them and know how to behave around them so there isn't a huge ton of danger aside from the natural hazards of living in an area heavily populated by large animals. I've heard of them even wandering around downtown Anchorage (which is Alaska's most populated city). tbh I think that probably most moose-related injuries are either caused by car accidents (particularly in winter when they come out near the roads more often) or tourists not knowing/messing with them?? but yeah. they're awesome creatures in every definition of the word.

location: outside of her apartment, downtown
status: closed for @ryanparrish
Covington was no Anchorage but even Georgia temperatures dropped once winter rolled around— especially an hour after midnight. Most sane people were already in bed or, at the very least, safely tucked behind their doors and wrapped in the embrace of artificial heat.
Not Bek.
Sat crisscross applesauce on the front stoop of her building, laptop balanced on her knees and a full gallon of ice cream just to the side of it, she pondered the screen. She knew where she wanted this to go, knew what she was hoping to achieve. Her brain just didn't want to supply the steps to get there.
A huff of frustration billowed out through her lips in a tiny cloud. Pointless. It was pointless. She might as well give up and go waste the rest of the night with some Netflix.
Might've, too, if the staccato of boots on concrete didn't draw her eye forward to the street. Even in the dark, lit only by the evenly spaced lamps down the block, recognition hit instantly.
"Hey." A tiny smile curved into place. She didn't ask what he was doing out so late. Ask if, like her, Ryan couldn't sleep. She didn't wonder where he was going, or where he'd just been, either.
Glancing toward her hoard of snacks she just wrapped the sleeves of her hoodie over her hands, shuffled over to make room, and said, "You hungry?"

WHERE: carnival of time WHEN: early december (no specific date) WHO: anyone! ( @anchoragestarters ) CAP: 3/4
If there one thing the mysterious assailants haunting this town couldn't kill, it was holiday spirit. Already, the trees of downtown Anchorage had been strewn with Christmas lights in a glittering variety of colours and the streets were lined with ice sculptures. There were probably few places in town more aggressively festive than the Carnival, both in the abundance of lights and decorations and in the blatant money-grabbing – Ash had managed to slip in for free by confusing the attendant at the gate because, despite all his other flaws, he'd always been crafty. Since he'd skipped out on the entrance fee, he had money to spare on games and other attractions, of which his attention was currently taken up by a ring-toss game stall. He'd watched a family go through it before him and figured this one wasn't rigged, given that their kid managed to land a hit despite their terrible aim, and was just about to step up to claim his turn when he collided with another body, a small 'oof!' escaping him at the impact. Not one to give up and flee at the first sign of trouble, Ash jumped on the defensive. (For no good reason, I hasten to add.)
"Nah-uh, I don't think so, I was here first," he said, thrusting his pointer finger in the direction of the stall, specifically at a row of plush dolls near the top of it. "I've got my sights set on that fucked up-looking penguin up there and I'm not letting anyone screw this up for me."

Length of time in Anchorage: on and off for the past 20 years, but most recently 6 months
Faceclaim: Camila Mendes
Claudia Santos grew up with the perfect example of love. Her parents, both raised in Brazil, fell in love as teenagers and Claudia quickly followed. Neither came from a place of wealth or prosperity, but both had dreams of creating better lives for themselves. Her mother was the dreamer though - an anthropologist, top of her class, getting scholarships, and grants. Claudia’s father works small jobs to put her mother through school, all knowing this was their way to a beautiful life.
Claudia was 10 when her mother’s work brought them to Alaska. Her mother worked with native locals to work with the government on preservation. Her father quickly felt at home in a place he’d never imagined he’d be. Finding a job at a local bar and becoming very close with the old man who owned the place. And when that old man died, he left the bar to Claudia’s father. Her mom began traveling a lot to work, so Claudia spent a lot of time at the bar with her father.
Both of her parents taught her to dream big, to believe in herself without needing someone else to. She always did well in school, knowing she wanted to do something that helped people. When it came time deciding where to go to college, Claudia has a hard time deciding if she wanted to leave home to pursue her dreams, leaving her father when her mother was away so often.
Claudia went to her dream college University of Southern California with the intention of becoming a lawyer. 2 years into school her mother became pregnant again and during childbirth there were complications, causing her mother to pass. Claudia moved home, to help her father take care of a brand new baby.
Eventually, after 3 years, her father convinced her to reenroll in school in Alaska to continue living her life - seeing how much responsibility she was bearing in trying to help raise her brother. But Claudia didn’t go far for a long time.
Once finishing college, Claudia moved back to California to go to Law school in Berkley before getting a job as an immigration lawyer. She visited home when she could and talked to her brother and father constantly.
A few months back her father became ill. She dropped everything and moved back home to help her father are care of her brother and the bar.

❝ but there's a person that you must be, just trust me... ❞
Age: 31
Gender & Pronouns: cis female & she/her
Neighborhood: South Addition
Occupation: chef at Lake Hood Lodge & Grill
Positive traits: passionate, selfless, & dedicated
Negative traits: indecisive, hot-tempered, & cynical
Length of time in Anchorage: local
Faceclaim: Prscilla Quintana
smirking eyes that hold one too many secrets, a history of survival shining from dark eyes, postcards pinned to the wall from far away places
death tw, parkinson's disease tw
Born and raised in Anchorage meant that Antonella Ibarra was far removed from the places she wanted to and the person she dreamed of being one day. While the city was no small town it just wasn't where big life happened, at least in her opinion. So, Nell grew up a dreamer and little by little the older she got the more she saw each dream die off.
When she was 11 years old her mother passed away suddenly, the death was a mystery of what caused it but at least she went peacefully in her sleep, and that left Nell and her father all on their lonesome. He'd been out of work for some time by then, a back injury from a hard labor job, and tough times got even tougher when the family of two tried to live on a singular income. Nell's father received disability but it barely covered the bills.
As a teenager her distractions were boys and girls. Dating was fun and she felt carefree, it was an escape from the troubles of her day to day life. Especially when her father's health took an even further decline as Parkinson's began to set in. Often times she would pretend to be someone else, lie to those she was seeing about her life and where she came from, it was the ultimate escape.
The worry of keeping a roof over their heads and food in their stomachs, Nell had to take up a job at 13 years of age. She worked in a kitchen, just doing dishes and cleaning up after customers at the end of the day. It was tough but the tips the waitresses made were often shared with her. Which helped when it came to her father needing a home nurse to visit a few times a week.
Being that poor meant Nell either had to bring things home from the diner she worked at or make magic happen with the little groceries she could afford to buy. Thankfully the cooks at the diner showed her things and gave her tips over the years that propelled her into the career she possesses now as an adult.
It was a selfish move but for a couple of years Nell put her father into a nursing home and rented out their house so that she could attend culinary school. The promise was that she would come back and make everything right again. Nell kept her word even if it was heartbreaking to leave Los Angeles.
With culinary school and experience under her belt she took the position of chef at a popular downtown restaurant. Years of success and good reviews took her career even further and just a couple of years ago Nell accepted the position of head chef at Lake Hood Lodge & Grill, one of Anchorage's finest establishments.
Nothing else in her life may go right but Nell Ibarra sure can cook.

The Basics
Name: Orlando Rojas
Gender: cis Male
Occupation: Engineer
Age: Thirty-One.
Birthday: March 20, 1992
Zodiac Sign: Pisces
Location: Downtown, Anchorage, Alaska
Orlando Rojas was born into a turbulent family in Anchorage, Alaska. His childhood was marred by poverty, neglect, and instability. His parents struggled with addiction, and as a result, Orlando often found himself fending for himself from a very young age.
At the age of 12, Orlando made the difficult decision to leave home, realizing that he couldn't rely on his parents for stability or support. With nothing but a backpack and a determination to survive, he set out into the streets of Anchorage, navigating the harsh realities of life on his own.
It was during this time of vulnerability that Orlando found unexpected refuge among the native population of Alaska. Drawn to their close-knit communities and strong cultural traditions, he was welcomed with open arms by those who saw a kindred spirit in his struggle.
Living among the native population, Orlando learned valuable survival skills, both practical and cultural. He learned to fish, hunt, and navigate the rugged Alaskan terrain, skills that would serve him well in the years to come. He also developed a deep appreciation for the rich traditions and spiritual practices of the native peoples, finding solace and strength in their connection to the land and their ancestors.
Despite the challenges he faced, Orlando's resilience and resourcefulness helped him carve out a life for himself in Anchorage. Overcoming adversity became his trademark, and he forged a reputation as someone who could thrive in even the most unforgiving environments.
As he grew older, Orlando remained deeply rooted in the native community that had embraced him as one of their own. He became a respected member of the tribe, known for his generosity, loyalty, and unwavering determination to overcome any obstacle that stood in his way.
Possible Connections:
Fellow Wilderness Enthusiast: I would love for Orlando to meet someone who shares his passion for the outdoors and adventure. They could bond over hiking, camping, and exploring the wilderness together, forming a deep connection rooted in their shared love of nature.
Entrepreneurial Partner: When Orlando decides to start his own business, he could meet someone who shares his entrepreneurial spirit and drive. They could brainstorm ideas, support each other through the challenges of building a business, and celebrate their successes together.
