January 2019. This science fiction graphic novel (pictured in its 2020 English edition) by Swiss cartoonist Zep (Philippe Chappuis) is such a tiresome agglomeration of grim sci-fi clichés that it's scarcely worth summarizing (it would have seemed hackneyed in 1979, much less 2019). However, the art, by Dominique Bertail from Zep's layouts, with some color work by Gaétan Georges, is exceptionally beautiful throughout. One to look at rather than read, then.

WEEK 2 ‘RESEARCH’
This week’s brief is all about us doing research about the work that inspires us and looking into the people who make them as well as specifically trying to find out the process of how they work as this may help us come out with new ideas and inspiration in terms of problem solving or generally to have an idea of the technique people who are doing the job that we have goals of doing, use.
Terada Katsuya
"Katsuya Terada (寺田 克也, Terada Katsuya, born December 7, 1963), is a Japanese illustrator and cartoonist from the town of Tamano, Okayama. Terada's prolific visual arts practice uniquely straddles the lines between manga, fine art, and digital design. His work ranges widely from highly-detailed comics and novel illustrations to expressive, futuristic character designs for video games and anime. Terada posts actively on Facebook as Katsuya "t e r r a" Terada, as well as on his web blog terra's book." (Wikipedia 2022)

What I like about Terada Katsuya’s work is mostly about how he combines a bit of a realistic style with his imagination and creativity which we can see a lot in his character designs. I think bringing in the opposite elements leads to an interesting outcome. The way he draws human faces and animals while focusing on form of the shapes and making them stand out with his usage of lines as well as adding unique elements and mechanical object drawings that could bring some strangeness into his design is what makes his work special for me and inspires me a lot in that aspect.
Kim Jung Gi
“Kim Jung Gi (legally Kim Jung Ki;Korean: 김정기, hanja: 金政基; 7 February 1975 – 3 October 2022) was a South Korean illustrator, cartoonist, and manhwa artist. He was famous for his large, highly detailed illustrations, ink and brush artistic style, and skill at drawing from memory.[2][3][4] Kim could complete his drawings entirely from his imagination, without the use of sketches, visual references, or other preparatory aids, and often used exotic forms of perspective, such as curvilinear perspective." Kim Jung Gi is mainly known by his ability to draw from his memory. However what inspires me about his work is more about how he approaches the subject of composition and storytelling with his great understanding of perspective. I also like his way of working because even though the people just see him a genius, he is a great example of how practice is so important in drawing as drawing has been like breathing to him since he was a child and he has done a lot of life drawings for a significant amount of time, which after a while, lead to him become able to memorise the things he has drawn before. Thus we can say, he uses this technique of applying life drawings into his illustrations or character design which is something I am particularly interested in. For that reason, his work has been very inspirational for me.
Nemiri
"Nicolas Nemiri (born 3 January 1975, in Mulhouse, France) is a French comic book artist. As a child, Nemiri had a great passion for books and admiration for French "bande-dessinée" artists such as Jean Giraud / Moebius, Hugo Pratt and André Franquin. He attended the Beaux Art d'Angoulême art school for three years, during which he met and befriended Dominique Bertail and Marc Rigoux. At the age of 20, after living on small jobs and a few illustrations done for Japanese fashion magazines, Nemiri's mother sent some sketches to Éditions Glénat in 1998. Author Jean-David Morvan offered Nemiri his first job and the two have since then worked on numerous collaborations, notably "Je suis morte" and "Hyper l'hyppo" (2005).

About Nemiri’s art, I am most impressed and inspired by how expressive his work is. Comparing to Terada Katsuya and Kim Jung Gi’s work which I always take as an example in term of their drawing technique, Nemiri’s art to me matters more about how to convey a feeling with a drawing or a design. His art is not as detailed as others as he uses lots of lose, repeated lines and brushstrokes, yet it is still very powerful in terms of delivering a message without getting lost in detail. That is what makes his art special and inspirational for me.

Lenni Reviews: "Paris 2119" by Zep & Dominique Bertail
Lenni Reviews: “Paris 2119” by Zep & Dominique Bertail
(Image Source) *This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review. Set in the far future, Tristan Keys is one of the few who still looks back on the past with nostalgia; avoiding teleportation devices in favor of walking and loving printed books. But when he see what appears to be a duplicate of his current boss wandering around insane, he is sucked into a noir-ish mystery witn dark…
