Probably Norwegian, Trondheim, A Lewis Chessman, A Warder, walrus ivory. AD 1150-1200.

Rightly regarded as the most famous chess pieces to have survived from the medieval world, the Lewis Chessmen secured their place in history when they were found in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. The remarkable hoard constituted the greatest ever discovery of medieval chess pieces, and from the moment they were unearthed, the Lewis Chessmen evoked their own mysterious world, steeped in folklore, legend and the rich tradition of story-telling.

A family spokesperson said: “My grandfather was an antiques dealer based in Edinburgh, and in 1964 he purchased an ivory chessman from another Edinburgh dealer. It was catalogued in his purchase ledger that he had bought an ‘Antique Walrus Tusk Warrior Chessman’. From this description it can be assumed that he was unaware he had purchased an important historic artefact. It was stored away in his home and then when my grandfather died my mother inherited the chess piece. My mother was very fond of the Chessman as she admired its intricacy and quirkiness. She believed that it was special and thought perhaps it could even have had some magical significance. For many years it resided in a drawer in her home where it had been carefully wrapped in a small bag. From time to time, she would remove the chess piece from the drawer in order to appreciate its uniqueness.”

J'ai commencé il y a un moment la BD "Donjon" de Joann Sfar et Lewis Trondheim et j'adore. J'avais seulement deux tomes, j'ai acheté le 3eme il y a quelques jours. J'adore parce que l'ensemble de l'œuvre est énorme, il y a eu la série de départ et puis d'autres sont venues se greffer pour expliquer l'avant, pour se pencher sur des personnages en particulier etc voyez plutôt :

J'ai commencé par Donjon Zénith parce que c'est par là que les parutions ont commencé en 1998. Et j'allais continuer dans l'ordre chronologique de parution mais en écrivant ce billet je me rends compte que j'aurais dû acheter deux autres albums avant celui que j'ai acheté l'autre jour. C'est un peu le même débat que pour Star Wars, tu commences par le 1 ou par le 4 ou par les prequels ?

Du coup là ça se passe dans un donjon, et comme dans tous les donjons il y a des monstres, des richesses que des gens tentent de voler et un maître, qui a des sbires.

Un jour deux types (qui sont des espèces de trucs tentaculaires déguisés en types) essaient de venir attaquer le donjon, et après s'être débarrassé d'eux, le maître réclame son plus féroce monstre pour aller voir ce qu'il se passe dans le village des trucs tentaculaires et pourquoi ils en veulent à son donjon. Sauf que le plus féroce monstre est tué et c'est Herbert, un canard, qui va prendre sa place. Il fait semblant d'être balèze, fake it till you make it, et avec Marvin (qui lui est vraiment balèze) ils partent mener l'enquête. Ça c'était le tome 1, que j'ai relu aujourd'hui.

Je mets la page wikipédia de cette série parce qu'elle est vraiment excellente. Pour l'instant c'est Boulet qui fait les illustrations, j'ai même assisté au stream pendant lequel il dessinait la couverture de l'un des albums (c'est ce qui m'a fait commencer la série) .

Tous les albums sont écrits par Joann Sfar et Lewis Trondheim, mais c'est ce dernier qui a illustré Cœur de canard, et je colle tout ça dans le billet épinglé pour compter les lectures de l'année.
