Best New Heavy Metal Releases Week of October 28th, 2022
Yet another insane amount of new releases and, to be completely honest, it looks to be the same, if not even more, next week. Continuing trying to keep this short as possible, especially when the list of albums is this long. Let’s get to a few of the highlights.
Charon’s Claw-Streets of Calimport (Heavy/Thrash)**
Bay Area Thrash metal with a good dose of Heavy/Speed metal thrown in and all formed in the Greek Heavy Metal Scene? Yes, thank you!
Morbikon-Ov Mournful Twilight (Melodic Black/Thrash)**
Melodic Black Metal that hits all the right notes at all the right times. I listened to this way too many times considering the amount of releases this week. When you have members that have resumes that include Iron Reagan, Municipal Waste, Soilwork and ….And Oceans, was there any chance this WASN‘T going to be good?
Abyssic-Brought Forth in Iniquity (Doom/Symphonic)**
Not normally my thing, but the re-playability of this album is off the charts. You will find new things throughout subsequent listens for quite some time. Next level songwriting throughout.
Royal Hunt-Dystopia Pt.2 (Heavy Progressive)**
A band that REALLY should be better known. Fantastic album after fantastic album. One of those bands that has the Khemmis problem. Thoroughly enjoy while playing and somehow they slip your mind when they aren’t.
Clamoris-Opus Limbonica (Melodic Death/Symphonic)**
When it comes to mixing symphonic elements with Melodic Death Metal, it doesn’t get any better than this. Seems to be the week for symphonic elements being added (Dimmu Borgir also re-released a remastered version of PEM this week) and Clamoris and Abyssic are both a masterclass on how to do it perfectly. If you like the added depth of symphonic elements, this is a no brainer.
That will do it for yet another week. Music is the passion of the soul. Enjoy every moment. Until next week and, as always,
BANG THY HEAD!!!
All worthy of a listen if you like the genre
*= standout in that genre
**=best of the week regardless of genre
Best of the Week
Charon’s Claw-Streets of Calimport (Heavy/Thrash)**
Blind the Eye-The Lion of Lions (Melodic Death)**

Abyssic-Brought Forth in Iniquity (Doom/Symphonic)**
Royal Hunt-Dystopia Pt.2 (Heavy Progressive)**

Jaina-style Figurine with Removable Headdress
A.D. 600-900
Maya
Jaina Island, Campeche, Mexico
Provenience unknown, possibly looted
This two-part Jaina-style figurine represents a standing human figure with a removable feather headdress. He wears a fringed, knee length kilt below the thick, padded belt characteristically worn by ballplayers. Behind him, a long flap of fabric hangs from this belt to the floor, stabilizing the figure. Three additional tiers of fabric hang from the front of the belt. The middle of these is painted yellow, while the foremost panel terminates in a three-lobed fleur de lis shape. The elaborate nature of his costume suggests he is involved in ceremonial activities related to the ballgame rather than being depicted in the midst of play.
The figure wears a four-strand beaded collar or cape. He also wears large earflares and fringed and beaded blue anklets. His removable helmet is attached with a nose-strap. The helmet is decorated with three large disks, possibly of shell or jade. Above these, a band elaborated with disk-shaped ornaments cinches a large central plume of feathers, each feather terminating in a perforated bead. Two additional feather tufts flare out to either side of the headdress.
The figure holds two curious elements in his hands, each with a strap that wraps around the thumb. Both of these are painted blue and edged with fine lines, as though they have a fringed or furry surface. The object in the figure's proper right hand has a face composed of two round, bulging circles for eyes and an oval-shaped mouth. This could represent a defleshed face or a shrunken head, possibly alluding to the rites of decapitation which were often parts of ballgame ceremonies. They also bear some resemblance to depictions of fruits, especially cacao pods in ancient Maya art, which are frequently shown animated with human faces. Again, this might allude to the conceptualization of the human head as a fruit or seed capable of regenerative growth (for more on this topic, see 1971.413).
For more Jaina-style ballplayers, see 1986.615, 1986.617, 1986.621, and 1985.635. For ballgame scenes, see 1971.417, 1980.237, and 1984.616.

Note
Is it true that tungsten carbide rings are actually safer than normal gold rings because they shatter when hit unlike gold which deforms and can cut off blood flow to the finger?
They’re more likely to shatter, yes, and won’t bend like other metals, but if you are working in a factory or other sort of heavy labor situation you want those silicone stretchy wedding bands. Tungsten carbide is too hard for EMT’s to cut off in an emergency, and MUST be broken off in such situations. And the metal can still get caught on equipment and get ripped off your finger, skinning and defleshing your finger as it goes.
I don’t work in the heavy industry parts of the plant. If I did, I would wear a silicone wedding band while at work rather than my metal one. My husband, a welder, locksmith, and metalworker, wears a silicone band at work and swaps to his tungsten one after he clocks out.

Heresiarch/Antediluvian — Defleshing the Serpent Infinity (Iron Bonehead)
Tumblr media
Heresiarch / Antediluvian - Defleshing the Serpent Infinity by Iron Bonehead Productions
This new split LP features music by two idiosyncratic death metal bands — which may sound like an awkwardly conceived phrase, at best. On the one hand: “idiosyncratic,” as opposed to what? Perhaps more than any subgenre of metal, death metal has produced the most dizzying array of sub-sub- (and sub-sub-sub-) genres, with ever fractionating, intensely sectarian listenerships. It’s all idiosyncratic. On the other hand: how can music so strongly devoted to beating the living shit out of one’s sensibility cultivate anything like the finely grained subtleties one generally associates with idiosyncrasy? Depending on how you are situated, those are questions you’ll want to debate, or they are questions you find entirely devoid of interest (and your reaction to those questions is likely a pretty good predictor for your feelings about this record).
If you are in the former camp, you’ll want to tune in. Heresiarch’s side of the record opens things up with the sort of aural assault they’ve been unleashing on the world for more than a decade. “Assault” is used advisedly; much of the New Zealand band’s music has flirted with war metal’s sonic extremities. See especially Death Ordinance (2017), on which the song “Lupine Epoch” was first released. But Heresiarch’s lyrics distance them somewhat from war metal’s moronic glorifications of chugging weaponry and fleshy carnage: “Abolishment of crude hierarchy / Man has sought shelter within doctrine / Trampled beneath hoof of animal law.” That’s pretty ambivalent stuff. Of course, the gruffly growled vocals of singer NH (yep, initials are all we get) make the ambivalence hard to discern, underneath the music’s unrelenting whirling chaos.
The real action on the split is on the second side, which provides the first new music in several years from Antediluvian. These atavistic Canadian weirdos have made some interesting, confoundingly freakish death metal, most of which has been released on splits and EPs. “Slipstream of Leviathan’s Wake” charts terrain similar to their excellent Through the Cervix of Hawaah (2011), on which the band investigated the primitivist, pagan anteriors of biblical narrative. Listening to “Slipstream of Leviathan’s Wake” is like being Jonah, stuck in the whale’s gut as it sounds deep into the sea: you feel as much as hear the gastric action, the building pressure, the clenching of massive muscle tissues. One track isn’t nearly enough, but it’s great to hear this band making their singular variety of death metal again.
Antediluvian have recorded another track for the split, a more markedly experimental song called “Prelude.” Droning, occasionally chiming synths sound behind booms of thunder and ominous rattling. Heresiarch’s side of the split ends with a parallel gesture, the ambient “No Sanctuary.” The contrast with the bands’ more characteristic chaos and tumult is jarring. Perhaps the turn to those austere, spatially spare textures is meant to exemplify or enact the “defleshing” noted in the split’s title. I don’t know; I sort of like it when there’s a lot of meat on the death metal bone, even if the resulting music seeks to render that meat a pustulant, suppurating mess. Isn’t that sort of the point?

From one of our (Defleshed and Gutted) last shows... a while ago. Looking forward to finishing this upcoming album and to start getting more active on the live scene again. We’ve got some shows lined up with bands I really admire (which is really why I do this) and a couple big festivals we’re attending. Hope to see some of you out there. Cheers!
