Wednesday 20 November 2002 - return to work - the car still smells of fresh paint - Adam Sandler’s animated holiday film premiere at the Kabuki in SF
20 November 2002
EN   Hi everyone!  I had returned from my November 2002 vacation, and brought candies to my work colleagues.  I also noticed the progress made, after my car had time to sit and allow the paint job fumes to dissipate.  There would be no further journeys outside the USA until late April 2003.  The family saw my presents the following Sunday the 24th November.
Guten Morgen!  Good morning!
Wednesday the 20th November 2002 I returned to work.  I had been away for almost two weeks.  It had also been about a month, since my car had to go into the repair shop because it was rear-ended.  I had a 2003 Ford Escort US fleet edition for the time my car was in the shop, but it was good to have it back.  I would go back to my parent's house on Sunday the 24th November.
About 5:30 AM I woke up, took a shower, dressed up for work, and took my gifts to work - and of course, I brought my work ID, necessary to enter the secure area of the office.  I had not seen my car for two weeks, and had wondered how much the paint smell had gone down.  I opened the car door, and could still smell the paint.  I had to crank down the windows while driving.  I drove to the office which was, at the time, 303 Twin Dolphin Drive, in Redwood City, not particularly far from the Redwood Shores Lagoon.  I made it to the office about 7 AM.
Once I was inside the office, I let my supervisor know, and put my assortment of chocolates and similar snacks out for people to enjoy.  Everyone was pleased to sample the snacks.  At times, I would tell people where I went.
I did not return to Europe until August 2003.  Also I did not leave the USA until at least April 2003, in that case, I went to Canada.  The 24th November 2002  I went to see my parents, and give my mother the Schwibbogen that she asked for.  She really liked it.  Everyone else enjoyed the Lebkuchen and similar.  And of course I did my laundry.  It was good to be back home.
The only other adventure until the end of the year, was going to Contra Costa County by car on 29th November 2002, and playing a couple of my cassettes that I recorded off the radio when visiting Copenhagen and Malmö.  I even remember hearing "Did anyone approach you" from A-Ha's then-recent "Lifelines" CD.  That same night, I drove to San Francisco's Japantown, have some sushi and go to the Kabuki Theater and see the Adam Sandler animated film "Eight Crazy Nights".  Not to have seen it, would have been a technical foul, as stated by one of the characters, Whitey.
So now the November 2002 vacation is over.  Hope you enjoyed reading about it, and I hope to write again towards the end of 2022 about December 2002.
Gute Nacht!  Good night!

Sweet ratchety fruit, bruised and blunt with weedy angst. Curvy cherry lays down pompous beats of hot-rod day-glo and tire rubber in a brilliant light ruby headed purple haze and fire-engine sunsets. Clean and chalky in the nose, portions of a bitter green tattoo visible where touchable lines head down into imagination. “Ah yes,” my Zinfandel friend says, “let me introduce you to some of my…

Journal #19- Dec. 4, 2023
Here we are, the final meeting of J200.
Ms. Schiavo and Ms. Anand were both present for this final gathering and gifted us each a bag of books and a personalized card.
Tumblr media
The class session also served as a sort of overall review session of various topics, such as nut graf writing and interview techniques for a feature piece.
Although today marks the end of class meetings, there is still work to be done, as we have a class final project we are all contributing to that is a collective of information looking at the public perception of Richmond versus the reality. It will include input such as man-on-the-street resident opinions of the city and crime statistics. My job for this project is to ask Contra Costa County District 1 supervisor John M. Gioia a few straighforward questions:
What would you say is the current public perception of Richmond?
How does this perception differ from the reality?
What are currently Richmond’s biggest needs? Challenges?
What is on the horizon for the city, in terms of development and change?
I am also set to contribute a census snapshot chart, using data from 2020 to represent various populations by age, race, gender, income, etc.
Given that it is crunch time for finals at Saint Mary's College, I am very, very busy. I will update soon with my progress on my final assignments for J200.
Thanks for reading!

White-tailed Kites - The Ritual by Zed Via Flickr: The ritual went on for almost twenty minutes. The mated pair had returned to the site of last year's nest and resumed their annual courting ritual in dramatic fashion. I watched in stunned silence while the Kites soared with feet outstretched, circling each other, occasionally locking talons and spinning into a free fall, all the while chirping and crackling like objects being thrown into an electrified fence. It was gloomy and overcast that day and I had to shoot fast to freeze the action, but I felt fortunate to witness such a strange, magnificent ritual and did my best to capture a few frames without disturbing their interactions.

It's over 100°F today and we're 9 unions strong turning up the heat on the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors.
We are the 4th wealthiest county in California, yet we are one of the worst compensated county workforces in the state! We can't hold onto new hires because we're so understaffed and overworked that they get overwhelmed and leave within a couple of weeks. Our workers go to Solano and San Francisco County to get better pay for the same work.
If you're on public assistance of any kind in California, but especially in Contra Costa County, this is about you too. Our clients' cases get discontinued and benefits get delayed through no fault of their own because we literally don't have enough people to stay in compliance. Tour food stamps could be late this month or next month. Your medi-cal could take weeks to get approved while you sit in the hospital. Even the Public Defenders are understaffed and underpaid, so if you're facing incarceration your representation is at risk. Rent, gas, child care, and medical costs are skyrocketing. Most of us are a paycheck or two from losing our homes.
We have confronted the BoS about this, and their response, verbatim, was "it's not a priority." Not "we can't afford it", not "we can't do it". Fairly staffing and compensating the workforce is not a priority. Therefore, our clients and communities are also not a priority.
Our contracts are up in 9 days. If you are in Contra Costa County or the surrounding area, or even if you just want to give the BoS a piece of your mind, you can contact them here and give them a piece of your mind.

Pet Blanc
Glorious Muscat–there’s no mistaking it for its explosive tropical fruit nose. And here, it juxtaposes the sharp bite of sparkle with delicate aplomb. A tasty drop with copious sprite and acid. Lovely in all ways. Clean and direct, sweet in the right spots–austere in others. I keep telling myself the pet-nat craze is over, and these just get better and better. 2022 DEUX PUNX Muscat Blanc Pet-Nat…

Journal #18- Dec. 1, 2023
Happy December, folks!
Yesterday I had a virtual meeting with a spokesperson from Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano County and his colleague. We discussed various details of my story, including my questions regarding the history of the Holiday Food Fight and whether the need for provided services has increased since the pandemic. There has, indeed, been an increase in need.
I learned a bit more about how the food bank has the ability to buy food in bulk, which stretches donated funds to the maximum benefit; the food bank representatives also confirmed that they would send along some relevant statistics and facts that I can use for my story.
Monday's J200 class meeting will be our last for the semester and we are going to have coffee and pastries while we reflect on our take aways from the past few months. It's certainly bittersweet.
