I keep seeing these cute “guess the shark species” slideshows l on tiktok, but they always show a pelagic thresher shark and just call it a “thresher shark,” so I realized not a lot of people might know there are three species of thresher shark. I’m going to introduce you to all of them and give you some certified marine biologist (tm) tips and tricks to notice species-specific features to look for once you see the long tail that indicates it’s in Alopiidae (since even google images messes it up sometimes).
Tumblr media
This is a pelagic thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus). It is the smallest of the three species, and usually the one everyone thinks of. Some of the most distinguishing features to me are the slender body shape, a smooth head with no noticeable ridge, and eyes that are still somewhat large, but not noticeably so. But the most important distinguisher to me is its coloration, the white on the shark’s ventral side forms a border with the grey on it’s dorsal side, and this border goes *under* the pectoral fins, not *over*. They can be found to at least 150 m.
Tumblr media
The common thresher shark (Alopias vulpinus) is the one that’s the most annoying to find on google images, because half the images are of the pelagic thresher. It is the largest species of thresher shark. As you can clearly see, these guys are a bit chunkier and also don’t have a noticeably large eye, and they have a smooth head that lacks a noticeable ridge. But the most important distinguisher for these guys is also related to their coloring. As you can kind of see in this photo, the border between the white of the ventral side and grey of the dorsal side goes well above the pectoral fin, so they have a spot of white that goes *above* their fin. This is the easiest way to distinguish them from pelagic thresher sharks, since you might see them within the same size range, so going off of body shape and size alone isn’t the most reliable.
Tumblr media
And lastly, we have the bigeye thresher shark (Alopias superciliosus), so hopefully now it’s clear why I was harping on the eyes so much for the last two. Their gigantic uwu eyes are definitely a distinguishing feature, but the most prominent feature you want to look for during identification is the large ridge between the top of their head and their body. It’s super noticeable in person as well, and is not a feature shared by the other two sharks. These are the most easily distinguishable from the other two, and can be found to a depth of up to 723 m.
All thresher sharks are ovoviparous, so they give live birth! And they’re all cutie patooties who deserve to be appreciated.

shark list…?
SHARK LIST!!!!!
This is another list that's based mostly off vibes and aesthetic rather than any deep analytical reasons, though I do have some deeper reasons for these choices but let's just focus on vibe for today
RAPH: Tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier)
Tumblr media
LEO: Common thresher shark (Alopias vulpinus)
Tumblr media
DONNIE: Scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna
lewini)
Tumblr media
MIKEY: Leopard shark (Triakis semifasciata)
Tumblr media
BONUS
APRIL: Epaulette shark (Hemiscyllium ocellatum)
Tumblr media
SPLINTER: Spotted wobbegong (Orectolobus maculatus)
Tumblr media
DRAXUM: Horned shark (Heterodontus francisci)
Tumblr media
CASEY JONES: Sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus)
Tumblr media
CASEY JR: Blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus)
Tumblr media
I promise I wasn't ignoring this ask I was just thinking very deeply about the answer to this list for not only the rise brothers but the direct family ensemble and wanted it to be the best list that I could make (tbh I made this list more for myself and is super based off my personal opinions. I'm a huge shark fan and was really excited to get this ask so I wanted it be a list I was confident in)

Wof tribe headcanons made by me!
Mudwings
They have multiple sets of spines on their backs, similar to crocodiles, alligators, and gharials! I think they'd be distinguished for different mudwings by royalty, with royal dragons having 5 rows of spines and non-royals having 3.
Example of spines:
Tumblr media
Seawings
Seawings have distinct tail shapes and patterns, most likely based on different species of fish or sharks. To name a few examples, angel fish, clown fish, thresher sharks, and tiger sharks. This includes them having fish, shark, and dolphin tails.
The edges of their wings are smooth and rounded in order to glide through currents and to have better mobility while swimming, similar to the light fury's wings from how to train your dragon. They are less acquainted with flying due to this.
Example of wing shape:
Tumblr media
Nightwings:
A mind-reader's silver scales can vary in shape and number, the most common amount of scales next to their eyes being between 1 and 3, though they can have as many as 5 or 6. This depends on how strong their powers are, and there can be an increase in number as their powers get stronger.
All nightwings have very faint patterns similar to a panther on their main scales.
Example of pattern:
Tumblr media
Rainwings
A rainwing's frill can vary in size and number of points, the common number being 3-5. Their frill raises when they're angry or in a defensive pose, similar to the Jurassic Park adaptation of the dilophosaurus.
Example of frill, less exaggerated for rainwings:
Tumblr media
Icewings
The spines on an icewing's back are an indication of age. They are born with little to no spines, and as they mature, more grow in over time. An ancient icewings, though rarely living that long, have manes of spines that trail down to their chests, giving them an intimidating look.
Their blood varies in shades of blue, bluish green, and purple.
Skywings
The wingspan of a skywing's wing is twice the length of it's body. This gives them excellent mobility, but also makes them bigger targets in the air.
In rare cases, firescaled skywing's can have the ability to "turn off" their firescales at will. This is never spoken of because the skywing tribe did not want any possibility of hope for the firescaled bloodlines.
Sandwings
A sandwing tail barb can vary in size and shape, some shapes being more efficient with their abilities than others.
Many sandwings have the patterns of common desert animals, such as the cheetah, hyena, jackal, or addax.
Example of patterns:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leafwings
Leafwings are distinguished by the leaf shapes on their tail, spines, and wings. These shapes vary by the types of leaves they resemble.
Their scales turn different shades with the passing seasons. This helps them camouflage into the trees when they turn different colors. When the leaves of their trees fall during autumn and winter, the scales of the leafwings' turn dark shades of brown to blend in with tree bark and the dirt.
Going off of that theory about the winter season, leafwings tend to create burrows underground during winter and hibernate until spring because the tree leaves they live in are not around during this time.
Hivewings
Many hivewings need glasses because their vision is quite poor for dragon standards. This is because their sight is similar to that of a bee's.
The wings of a hivewings are quite thin. Though they are strong when flying from hive to hive, they do not hold well during severe storms.
Silkwings
Silkwings have a prehensile tail, quite like rainwings. They use it to hang from trees and other structures during their metamorphosis.
When a silkwing emerges from its cocoon, their wings need time to dry, just like butterflies and moths. If this process is not done correctly, the wings will suffer permanent damage.

You mentioned once that Eg has both polecat and dart frog DNA, right? That implies that other clones can have more than one type of animal mixed with them. Thinking of the possibilities is exciting :)
(That is correct! Now it is time for 'Bean talks about clone OCs again!!!' (Also Bean is not a scientist, and we are using cartoon logic, so do not come at them for inaccuracy!!!)
In the most simple of terms, there are three groups that clones can be classified into! (Well, four, but we'll get into that)
The first group is clones with just a single species of animal (or plant!) spliced into their DNA, with examples being Spud (Star-Nosed Mole) and Mirtillo (Common Vampire Bat)
These guys are probably second most common! Giving clones specific traits without the risk of mixing DNAs and causing the clone to explode or something
Tumblr media
The second group is clones with more than one set of DNA, but those animals are all the same species, ie Vitelotte having only spider DNA (Jumping Spider, Wolf Spider, Tarantula etc (side note, no specific subspecies bc there are so many spiders I do not have the spoons to look through them all and pick some out kjfdsjf)), and Mint Chip having shark DNA (Tiger Shark and Thresher Shark)
These guys are probably the most common type as they (the scientists) were giving clones specific traits from animals like the singular DNA clones, but also did not want to be limited if one type of species could do something another couldn't
Tumblr media
And then Eg falls into the third group of having more than one set of DNA from different animals! As mentioned, she has Striped Polecat (aka African Skunk or Zorilla) and Blue Poison Dart Frog DNA! Another example, bc I need to have two examples, is BB, who is a mix of Boer Goat, African Lion, Ball Python, and King Cobra!
This group is the rarest out of the three, bc mashing together DNAs like that often resulted in failure, but that does not mean they are few and far between!
Tumblr media
And last, but not least, special cases!!! This is the group Pep falls into, even tho he should technically be in the third group, he is packed with so many different kinds of DNA, he is very much an outlier here
Tumblr media
And there are a few other outliers, who would also technically be in one of the previous groups, but what makes them different is that they were not purposely spliced with certain DNAs, and were the result of cross-breeding (two (or more) different clones with different DNAs making a baby), or cannibalism (eating another clone and absorbing their set(s) of DNA)

In Thresher’s defense re: defaulting to calling both Inklings and Octolings “squid”. I think in a world where there are some people that have way more wild dimorphism within the same species than Inklings vs Octolings do, people who aren’t used to seeing them around probably don’t always see what makes them separate species! I know we’ve made fun of Inkopolis squid not being able to tell Octolings apart from Inklings but I think it’s probably rather common in parts of the world where one species or the other are uncommon. Many languages don’t make the distinction between them by default.
Thresher themself can tell them apart just fine which is more than can be said for the rest of their family (minus their dad Jin, he’s from Splatsville proper he knows). With their family they grew up speaking like, kind of 60-40 blend of the local Shark language and Inkish. Only Jin uses Inkling vs Octoling names correctly/at all and the topic doesn’t even come up very often in the first place. It tends to take a second for Thresher to remember which one’s which. And so you know what? Who cares. Squid. Does the distinction matter 90% of the time. Also this habit of theirs pisses off Rill to no end and it’s hilarious they’re never stopping

Trash siren dave, how graceful
Tumblr media
Some more whiteboard doodles
(he's the unholy mix between an angler fish and a common thresher shark)
I originally wanted to draw him because someone posted a mermaid proportions guide in the discord and my specific brand of brain rot must stamp "what if this but dave" on literally everything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now it's time for me to rant about my over active imagination about some rough lore I came up with while doodling him in quick and lazy bullet points, yay
- Kidden siren dave gets kidnapped by scientists, a specific scientist kidnapping him after that to take all of the credit for the discovery of sirens
- That scientific trauma happens until dave once again stops changing and yielding more discoveries
- He's thrown back into the ocean and resides near the giant trash island in the sea
- One day he washes up on shore tangled up in way too much trash to even move
- He's found by a curious human who takes him home, cuts off the trash from his tail and nurses him back to health
I haven't decided what'll happen next, I'll leave it up to you guy's imagination, but dave does have the luring siren song from the myths and that, because I can't find out where else to mention it

There's a criminal lack of FFX mermaid AUs, so I did it myself!!
BEHOLD!! Mershark Tidus (whom I have en entire AU centered around because I have no impulse control)!!
Tumblr media
I pulled inspiration from an old story of mine when designing his merform. This means he has: no nose, gills on his ribs, and no hair/fur. His "hair" is just a very, finely thin fin that sits on the head.
Scrapped designs below the cut off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried basing him off of Thresher Sharks, but there are so many different kinds I couldn't pick one. Originally, I wanted him to be super colorful to represent all the colors of Zanarkand, and his personality, but it just wasn't working. So I went with the more sandy colors of the Big-Eye Thresher.
I've always seen it as weird that merfolk had hair, despite it being the most common interpretation. Mermaids are more anatomically closer to fish, but swim like mammals. If they were proper, aquatic mammals, they wouldn't have scales at all: they'd be smooth like dolphins. So are they fish? But they have hair, so they're not reptiles.
IDK man, mermaids confuse me.

Redoing the first post I ever did on this blog: Trying to assign a shark to CFO🦈
The first time i did this I was honestly very nervous about putting my stupid takes out into the fandom, but I'm ready now, and I have stronger CFO shark opinions. I'm linking to all the sharks' Wikipedia pages, for those interested in sharks!!
I gotta be honest, this is about Charles, but mostly this post is me sharing fun shark facts. I hope you guys are chill with that.
Same as the last time, I still have some honorable mentions.
(ALSO i tagged this post under some shark tags, this is the guy we're talking about, btw, I'd love for you guys to vote in the poll at the bottom of the post)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I considered something like the Basking Shark. However, they're quite large, and I think Charles looks harmless, so the Basking shark was out. Additionally, despite they're large size, they're pretty docile. They're one of the three species of sharks that eat plankton! But, I envisioned a slightly more slender, swift hunter type of shark.
I also considered a type of Thresher Shark, as I liked their unique appearance, but ultimately I couldn't decide on a species. I think I wanted Charles to be one just because they have cool caudal fins.
I very briefly considered The Great White, because to most people that's the shark. But I just wasn't feeling it. They're cute, but I don't see Charles being one.
In the original post I listed The Silky Shark, but I'm taking this back, because now that I think about it, I just wanted Charles to be a Silky Shark because they're my favorite....
Tumblr media
Moving on to the real choices now.
Bull Shark (Carcharhinus leucas)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Bull Shark is one of my favorite sharks. It's in the family Carcharhinidae, which makes it a Requiem Shark! (which is also where I get my tumblr name from) I didn't do this on purpose, but all the sharks in this list are actually Requiem Sharks. Requiem sharks are known for being very fast and efficient hunters, and of course the Bull Shark is no exception. Bull Sharks are known to be aggressive towards people, alongside the Great White and the Tiger shark (though don't let a certain awesome 1975 movie fool you, you're odds of being attacked by sharks are very slim, these bad boys are just know for doing it the most) Bull sharks are euryhaline, meaning they can adapt to water of varying salinity, meaning they can do just fine in freshwater. This sort of adaptability reminds me of Charles, and tbh, I think Bull Sharks just kind of look like him some how.
Blue Shark (Prionace glauca)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Blue Shark looks like a goober. You can find them fucking everywhere, check out this map from Wikipedia. They're one of the most wide-spread shark species!
The Blue Shark's name isn't a stretch, they really are blue! Curious, and not typically aggressive, they've been known to approach divers. They're also known to be more social than other sharks, and sometimes travel in schools separated by sex, at least as juveniles. It's slender, streamlined appearance makes me think of Charles, in the sense that somehow the Blue shark looks like it'd wear a suit, but maybe more like a silly colored suit. Like blue! The long pectoral fins also remind me of him, for some reason. I don't know why, it's not like he has long arms?
If you're familiar with the BLÅHAJ, you may know the blue shark! The common name for Prionace glauca in both Swedish and Dutch is blåhaj, which just means Blue Shark!
Tumblr media
Oceanic Whitetip Shark (Carcharhinus longimanus)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A shark with a very good design, look at that aesthetically pleasing coloring and the rounded fins? This is someone's OC shark, i swear. The Oceanic Whitetip is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. They cannot pump water through their gills, so they're one of the shark species that has to always be moving! They're more leisurely while swimming, and have been known to breach the water.
Honestly, I think this is a good candidate for Charles shark because I just love the way these sharks look!
Sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This silly guy is the Sandbar shark, one of the largest costal sharks in the world! They're known for their brownish coloring (another common name for them is the brown shark) and their tall dorsal fin. They also have rather large pectoral fins. They are listed as endangered, as they are hunted for their fins. I chose this shark honestly because it's brown, and the aforementioned tall dorsal fin. I was mostly choosing the sharks based on looks, and this one easily looks the most like Charles to me.
Tumblr media
Anyways, thanks for reading my silly shark post! When I did this like, three months ago, I was working on this AU thingy, but I'd got totally sidetracked trying to assign a damn shark to Charles. The original idea was he was gonna be like... y'know, a mermaid or something, but I never got around to working on it, mostly because of the sharks. If you have any interest in it, I could do Dethklok/any one else from MTL as sharks. Honestly, i'd love an excuse to combine my interests.
Oh also.
