Daz’s already grim expression turns into a scowl.

He’s in the hidden rooms underneath his and Raine’s house again. Based on the design of his hoodie and the earrings he’s wearing, it’s a different day from the last time he was present.

A holographic display sits in front of him, and he’s using it like he used to use his mod console.

Not only has the most recent Observer come to pester him– something that seemed inevitable, given how many of the others have done so– but they’ve decided to side firmly with the monster who threw a tantrum over Daz’s refusal to murder a child.

Great. He’s so thrilled a psychopath has joined this fucked up little scenario.

They just recognize the bleak cruelty of what you’ve done, Innit growls. It’s said defensively enough that Daz can put two and two together.

So they’re in contact with Innit. Even better! This is exactly the sort of loose end he doesn’t need.

He can’t help but be glad he made his deals when he did. It’s nowhere near perfect, but he has no doubt this one would try to fuck him over if there weren’t any sort of protections.

Tone clipped, he answers, “You’re a little late to try and dig into my insecurities like that.”

You act like he won’t hate you for what you’re really like, his monster sneers.

He doesn’t bother to reply to it.

That finally makes him pause, looking incredulous.

“...Pastel yellow and/or gold,” he says, plucking at one of his many elaborately embroidered pale yellow hoodies, then flicking some of the dangling gold earrings crammed into his ears. “Don’t all of you already know about me? Why the fuck are you asking such an obvious question?”

He squeezes his eyes shut, and heaves a large sigh. “...Break, now’s not a good time.”

I see so much MCYT/DSMP fanart and I get Worried(tm) that I accidentally tag the characters as the content creators and vise-versa

this is an irrational fear, I know. Most artists Will Not Notice. BUT WHAT IF THEY DO, the anxious little worms in my brain cry out. BUT WHAT IF THEY NOTICE AND ARE OFFENDED AND HATE YOU FOREVER??

I try to look at the artist's original tags but this is not always as enlightening as I would hope.

Vio squints up into the air, earning a questioning noise from Aryll, who sits in his favorite overstuffed armchair in the alien’s living room.

“A…question, sort of,” he says, slowly.

Aryll perks up, tail flicking curiously. “Sort of? What do you mean, sort of?”

The alien grimaces, trying to figure out how to explain the message he got. “It’s…a fan letter? I think?”

His not-son immediately breaks into a cackle so intense that he seems to be struggling to breathe.

“Since– how do you have fans?!”

Vio rolls his eyes and throws a small pillow at him. “Thanks, menace.” “You’re spending too much time with Day,” Aryll accuses, still giggling.

Zinn, Aver, and Toma emerge from downstairs. Aver is yawning, Zinn teasing him, “You'd think you haven’t slept in days.”

“I've been fuckin’ busy! Trade shit, getting new fuckin’ manufacturing methods up, starting to figure out orders for the Christmas ball– list is fuckin’ endless,” Aver whines.

Zinn squints up at the ceiling in a manner nearly identical to how Vio looked just a few minutes ago.

Toma asks, “You got a question?” Zinn hums, nodding a few times.

“...So, I'm gonna take that as a joke,” the Tubbo slowly says. “And not as you being a dick.”

He looks over to Aryll and relays, “Wants to know why you decided to be a doctor.”

Aryll perks up, his tail flicking with interest. “Oh! Well, it’s because of not-Dad. I saw him help others, and more specifically help Toma with knowledge…and I decided I wanted to do that, too. And it was a big help, once people started coming back.”

Aver flops down on the couch, and Zinn follows suit. Toma sprawls over both of their laps, getting a little laugh from all of them.

Aver's expression falls at the message he gets.

He's heard about the partially redacted message that Atlas got. Just like his friend had described, this one has something very blatantly covered up.

Atlas’ was just a brief blip. This one, though? It sounds like the bulk of the message has been replaced by static.

It sounds a lot like a TV that's been left on but isn't displaying anything.

“Uncle Aver?” Toma reaches up and touches his shoulder, breaking him from his thoughts. He sounds worried.

He smiles, ruffling the patchy hair on the zombie piglin’s head. “S’ fine, big man; just a weird thing.” Louder, sort of directed to the ceiling, he says, “Dunno what you wanted to say, couldn't hear most of it. Try again?”

OH RIGHT, the bios!

So; they only have the Council, Caper, and Spark in them. A few others are mentioned, but only in reference to their significance to those people.

This marks it as a hell of a time capsule. At this point, several major plot points of Blood & Gold hadn't come up yet. Innit probably wasn't really even a thing-- a month or two old at best!!

Another nudge for people curious about the process of how the fic developed to go read the docs that show snapshots of what it looked like at the end of each of the eleven months it was in progress (and also the first day/session!)

We start with Aster!

A lot of this remains true! However, by the askblog he's more or less accepted the mantle of leader of the SwSh. And generally too well-respected (and feared) to get called something not too far off from mocking like 'Shadow'.

He's pretty much always been planned to have earrings from Theo and Lee, he's always been extremely heavily scarred, his clothes are more or less unchanged from when I first decided on them.

The cuff being subtly different is in reference to it being one of the first ones made-- and thus hand-shaped vs from a mold.

I don't think I've really conveyed just how BIG the Swords and Shields are, members-wise? Like-- a significant portion of newcomers end up there.

They don't all get insanely devoted to Lee (almost none of them in fact-- Daz and Aster are extreme outliers & the rest of the Council were hand-picked to be full-throatedly loyal at all costs)...but there's still a LOT of them.

Most people are in the group for fringe benefits. An excuse to learn to fight better, a ready-made social group, allies because most refugees harbor a fear that everything will go wrong again, to have something to believe in, a reason to get up every morning instead of curl up in bed and disassociate all day. The exact reason can be any of those or others!

So, yeah, between being head of the SwSh, a secret Council member, and his extreme closeness with both Theo and Lee...Aster is really, REALLY important. He's arguably the biggest faction on the server. I think it's been explicitly stated that Theo would be wary of him if he weren't nearly fanatically devoted to protecting Lee.

Anyway, moving on!

Here's where some major changes start. This doc was initially started around late 2021-- and thus before Polaris started. At best it wound up being last edited a few chapters in.

So, Aster's Dream wound up being quite a bit different than the initial concept. Ditto for Aster's personality, though less so.

Aster's seriousness was translated into his fucked up capacity to emote, and his actual vibes are more...chill? I wound up making him the opposite of Daz in a LOT of ways.

But most of that happens behind the scenes and I forget that it hasn't been "on-screen" much, lmao.

Looooots of shit got changed in here. Aster's Ranboo joined the 'actually super fucked up' club; a conversation about WHY Lee is so adamant about bandaids never really happened; Aster's final push was waaaay different.

The fics for the Council all started as character exploration snippets. Daz's became Blood & Gold, and Aster's wound up being Polaris.

Both, funnily enough, started pretty much at the end. Aster's choice was one of just a handful of scenes I wrote before I decided to just full on make it into a fic.

Still true that the Council of the Star is named because Aster's inclusion in a secret group linked to the SwSh is REALLY REALLY OBVIOUS.

A decent chunk of this is true, but the biggest change is easily to his dynamic with Daz.

The underlying friction, that being that they remind each other of their respective Dreams (and thus one of the primary vectors of their trauma) still holds true. Buuut now they're both WAY less mature about it!

Daz in particular is a petty, spiteful little bastard who is nearly always willing to get under Aster's skin.

Don't worry about the Khons and Raine parts! Definitely no neon warning signs about the sort of things they went through! :)

I NEED you to understand the sheer hilarity of Khon's usual outfit.

Picture these things together, and also remember that Khon's wool looks like spun gold.

He does not give a single FUCK about what looks good. In fact, he would love if more people were too intimidated/put off by his Vibes to approach him.

He spent most of his life either on the run or having zero control of his appearance. He's spent more than enough time forced to bow to others and being pretty for them. He's not doing it ever again.

More or less the same. This is the exact same thing Noodley read and then went "I'm gonna poke at their trauma!" and, because my power was out for several days due to snow, I did not stop to think about the CONSEQUENCES of that.

Daz was able to hold himself hostage because of it tho, so...it all worked out?

History skipped because it's still at least a LITTLE of a surprise!

Khons and Aleph's house is much further away now. It was built well before Daz+Raine or Aster's houses, actually! They no longer have a basement, though I still should make a workshop for them.

Sunroom wound up being the starting point of their build, and I'm really happy with it. Orange + teal/blue is one of my favorite combos! <3

Hey remember when the tokens were mentioned once and then never again? I do! Surely there's no reason to ask what was up with those, and there wouldn't be a noteworthy response to it or anything...

Oh man this was even before the Prime versions got their new names, lmao.

More or less all still true! Just a few shifts here and there, the biggest being that Perce is a little less important.

Still close to him, though.

Aleph has the least detail, because both he and Khons are still super underdeveloped.

Again, most of this is still true. Lee's importance is a bit more personal, and Theo isn't as close to him, but otherwise mostly the same.

Skipping over Raine's appearance bc there's something important there!

He's had some notable shifts from his initial concept. He's still not super outgoing, but his work with Daz means he's more used to it than I planned.

Def still has some deep-seeded sore spots about being useful to those around him. Daz, being Daz, doesn't let those linger for too long before he finds a way to remind him that he doesn't need to be useful.

Meanwhile Daz has a breakdown at the idea of not having a purpose.

There Is No Concerning Foreshadowing/Hints Here, Nope.

Most of this is the same, though I'm downgrading his closeness with Dee and Zinn.

Daz time!!

His cuff has existed and been referenced since before Blood & Gold started being uploaded btw.

His earrings were the first core idea for him, weirdly enough! Just popped into my head as I was deciding who to put in the protect-Lee-at-all-costs club. Needed members and leadership, one thing led to another, and now Daz has his own tag on my main blog.

My special little bastard <3

He's even less hinged now, but more or less the same.

This isn't all of his history, but I'm saving some of that for later.

Daz's Dream wound up becoming VERY different. Like-- I maintain that, as a whole, Dream was the more sympathetic of the two of them.

At least until. Y'know.

God, so much of this is WILDLY different from how Blood & Gold wound up being. You can see hints of where I started from, but like...wow.

This is before Innit, or at least before I would have actually considered adding it to the doc. I think parts of this were written before I settled on making Daz an admin, too!

By my metrics this is a fuckin' fossil.

Aster's already-mentioned shifts aside, this is surprisingly similar.

The biggest change is that his feelings about Lee are different. There's already been some foreshadowing about how and why that is! And outright stating some things, lmao.

This playlist is unique because I can't tell you who it's for.

...Well, that's technically not true. I just don't want to, because I want to play riddlemaster and have people try to figure it out.

The character linked to this playlist is the one who I've been not-so-subtly alluding to. They're very important!

(And, no; they're not the Scribe.)

Unlike Innit's playlist, this one has nearly every song my version does. There were a few instances of duplicate songs, so those got cut.

I'll explain a little more about the ways a song can be linked to a character under the cut. If you don't want to guess, then, ehh...I guess have a playlist of good songs?

Songs might be literal, metaphorical, directly about, and/or how the character in question feels about a different character. On top of that, it could be at any point in that character's story. Thus, the meaning can be wildly different between characters. For instance, "creature" by half-alive shows up in Innit, Aver, and Day's playlists. (At least, the full ones.)

So, for Innit, that song is a combination of how it felt about Dream and to some extent Daz/Tommy for most of Blood & Gold. Dream was the one who gave it the final push to form; Dream is the one who freed it from its cage. Daz/Tommy was the one who (unintentionally) gave it a shape-- sculpted it, in a sense. Like clay. Later on, the meaning shifts to be bitter and vengeful. It is made from Daz, after all-- and it will use those cruel lessons like knives to It kept those cruel lessons close, fired them in the kiln of its hatred for years.

For Aver, it's how he feels about the not-family + his general place in life and how Toma feels about him. He's learned a lot and knows he has both personal power and the backing of powerful people who genuinely care about him. If he stumbles, there will be people to catch him. If he falls, they'll hold out their hands to help him back up.

For Day, it's a two-way thing; it's how he feels about his sons and how they feel about him. In a way, he had to re-learn how to be human when he met them. He had almost lost the will to keep going...and then Theo grabbed his sleeve and told him that he needed to come back. They took his worn clay and gave him a purpose again. (Fun fact; this is one of Day's most fitting songs. I've gone into depth about how basically every line works for him with a friend.) His sons' perspective is more obvious. He's been their teach and protector. Theo, Dee, Orph, and Atlas actually gave him a name to fit with their new ones; Aether. The primordial of light, because he was-- and remains-- their beacon of hope. (Additional fun fact; Day was too attached to DayDream, but he still considers it a part of his name. His sons gave it to him, and he'll be damned if he gets rid of something so precious.)

So...the meaning of a song can vary a hell of a lot even for a single character. To get a better read about who Mystery might be, I suggest sending in some questions.

Out of context Welcome to the Inn/Creepypasta doodles! (Dream doesn't have horns or a tail, that's just a trait Noodley used with their Dreams a lot and added out of habit.)

This is somehow a Daz branch that's arguably tied for having the most functional groups. I'm still not quite sure how that happened.

Fun fact; i named the groupchat with myself, Noodley, and Trias "Innit Apologists". Because we are.

Also, they did art of themselves and Trias in Observer form;

One thing I tried to do with sets/groups was to have a unifying background element.

Like so:

Not-Family; solid squares. I made the trio looking in those directions on purpose! They're hatching a scheme.

Council; black & white frames (bonus Aleph and Khons "oh Daz is being insane again" shared Look & bonus acting/fake!Daz)

Was-Taken fam; white diamonds

There's so many random one-offs of Day because I tend to use him as the barometer for if any given maker is viable. He's got a pretty simple casual look, but with enough special elements (wings, earrings, necklace) that it lets me get a good idea of what I can do with any given piccrew.

Vio, Aryll, Khons, and Aleph are the REALLY hard ones to make. Vio is just Weird, ditto for Aryll (plus I have a very strong mental image of him), and Aleph & Khons both have pretty distinctive non-human traits.

It's hard to pick a favorite group, but I really REALLY love this Was-Taken fam set because of how expressive it is;

Day: "that's not going to end how you think it will" / "what the actual fuck are you doing" Theo: being a pest towards his loved ones, with bonus Fates!

Dee: "I will make you regret that." Orph: being annoying towards his twin, specifically Atlas: being annoyed by his twin, specifically

Perce: Humblebragging about his accomplishments. If Theo gets to use "I've fought in wars while blind and won" thing as often as he does, then Perce gets to talk up having won in manhunts against said brother + their other siblings.

Lee: sunshine boi!!

I'll be adding some images I want to say something about. Also, just know that I frequently have gone back and tweaked or even completely redid parts of it.

Overall has over a thousand pics spanning from January 11th 2022 to a week or so ago. I've been working on this 1.16.5 creative world for what my launcher tells me is over 14 days of time spent entirely in-game.

There are over 150 mods used, ranging from itty bity ones ("No Potion Shift" at 3KB & "Shut Up Experimental Settings" at 5KB) to almost comically large ones ("Caves & Cliffs Backport" at 50,313 KB & "Modern XL" at 37,090 KB).

I run it on a laptop, but I do have to turn pretty much everything else off. I usually switch to my phone for music/podcasts + Discord and have just the game running. Also, I got this model specifically to handle Minecraft and for having ample space for my music. I have all of it stored on my computer and played through MusicBee, because I don't want a million ads.

You might notice that it takes a looooong time for most of the buildings to get roofs. This is because I didn't understand how those blocks worked. And also I just don't like doing them much; they're boring compared to the character detail stuff.

-Council of the Star Headquarters It's not in the actual album (since the dates don't align, because it was just a screengrab to share with Noodley vs a proper screenshot), but these were the original blocks I planned on using for the three main Summer Hills houses:

The mod with the tiles and logs got removed early on, so I had to pick something else to use. I like the end result way better, though; each house has a more distinct flavor while still being fairly cohesive.

If I had to pick a specific detail as my favorite, it'd have to be the creeper plushies. At some point, Lee decides that creepers are protectors; thus, anyone he cares about needs to have a plush version. Sentiments on the look of them are...mixed.

Theo thinks they're creepy as hell but his baby brother gave those to him-- thus, they're above his gear as an 'intimidation tactic'; Day is, uh, not super keen on waking up from a nightmare to the sight of creepers, so he has them out of his line of sight; Perce's friends think it's almost tooth-rottingly sweet but in a /pos way, etc.

It all spawned off of seeing the creepers in the "Modern XL" mod, and realized those are EXACTLY the sort weird, kinda unnerving thing a kid would latch onto.

Trias has been writing a fic about my blorbo variants! I've helped a little with making sure they sound right (especially Theo, whose usage of curse words is sort of just "yeah that feels like the right place to put one") & some small tidbits in relation to how they interact/react to things, but the prose and concept are all from Trias.

I've seen the whole thing and talk with Trias regularly, so I can definitely recommend subscribing!

also yes I swear I'm working on updates for here. I have a few posts with significant chunks done, I'm a decent ways into the next chapter of Polaris, and I'm ironing out the first chapter of Fool's Gold.

...And I have fics later on + Backwards, Backwards + Welcome to the Inn simmering. Rewrites I'm still struggling HARD with; I just feel more drawn to the parts of the story after Day & his family show up. At this point, I might wind up writing his entrance so I can build up internal hype and then working backwards.

So I'm working on putting the Blood & Gold playlist of 5x songs per chapter (for a total of 150 songs, no repeats) into a good order. All the songs are picked out, it's just a matter of making it flow well.

BUT IN THE MEANTIME.

I'm gonna share my two (yes there are two) "credits" songs for Blood & Gold. These are the songs that I feel most strongly represent the fic as it stands at the end of chapter 30.

Things We Lost In The Fire is, to me, Dream and Tommy watching the world around them go up in (metaphorical) flames. Tommy lit the match; Dream can only watch as everything turns to ash around them.

And before he can even process that loss, even Tommy is gone-- taken away, stolen in a split second.

He's left cataloguing everything that he lost in that blaze, Tommy included.

Tommy tries to methodically label and incinerate everything he wishes he could forget. He wants to be rid of all the memories and feelings he has; maybe, even if it was all ash, he wouldn't feel so empty.

Fire being how Tommy destroyed the claims was, funnily enough, a connection I made literally yesterday.

Of the two, "More Time" is stronger. I get emotional every time I hear it, just a lil bit, because I can so so so so SO perfectly picture a shot of the remaining characters as they stand when the fic ends.

Tommy and Innit are gone-- off to a place far, far away from everything they ever knew. Tomm'y's plea for more time is to have more days spent believing he would have everything he ever wanted. He longs to have more time with Tubbo, more time with his mentor before the betrayal, more time sure that the only choice he could possibly make would be to take his rightful place as an admin at Dream's side. He wants more time with a clear purpose, a goal to strive towards. All he has now is what's in his inventory, bitterness, and his wits.

Dream begs for more time to have everything back to how it should be. He wants his server whole again, yes, but most crucially he wants his protege back. He wants to have the quiet surety of Tommy's presence at his side; he wants to have the awe in Tommy's eyes again. He wants to go back to when everything was simple-- he wants to reach through time and shake his stupid, stupid past self, and make him see the light. He wants any light at all. Everything is so cold and dark-- everywhere he goes, it feels agonizingly empty. He wants more time with his happiness. He wants more time with Tommy's happiness, and trust, and warmth.

Sapnap wants more time to understand. He doesn't know what happened, where and when and why why why everything went wrong. It feels like yesterday that his best friends were at his side. It feels like yesterday that he had two boyfriends who he thought were both good people. It feels like yesterday that he and Tubbo would hang out and take some small, cold comfort in each other understanding the strange loss of their closest friends shutting them out and pulling away. He wants more time to somehow unlock the truth. He wants to know what he could have done to stop it all. He wants go back to when he believed he and his friends would be together forever. A time before Wilbur, or Tommy, or even before anyone else joined the server. Maybe if he could go back, he could stop everything from going wrong.

I can picture Dream sitting alone in the empty server (in his empty base, in the ruins of the paradise he thought he could build) and screaming out, begging the universe or the gods or ANYTHING to give him more time. It's an extremely vivid mental image that is likely to cause at least one person psychic damage! :)

The only other song that I REALLY strongly associate with this fic is, funnily enough, another Crane Wives song.

"Margaret" is the anthem of chapter 27. It's Tommy and Innit putting their determination to the test, and of them laying out their plans.

Margaret waits, and so do Tommy and Innit.
