I support the new clean auto rules! And I oppose defunding climate policies!
316 so far! Help us get to 500 signers!
I am thrilled that the U.S. finalized strong climate change rule for cars yesterday. These rules will force automakers to ramp up electric vehicle sales and slash emissions from gas-powered models. The rule also would reduce fine particulate matter — the most risky form of pollution to our health. Only seven countries met global guidelines for it last year. The fact that the U.S. is leading the world on climate action is great news!
I know that fossil fuel companies are likely to challenge this rule. I want you to stand with the Biden administration and fight back. We are in a climate emergency and we are losing. We need to do much, much more to avoid the worst consequences of a warming planet. This strong rule is a needed next step. I expect Congress to back it and do even more.
As for the Republicans’ trying to defund President Biden’s green tax credits? Absolutely unacceptable. I consider it an outrage that GOP lawmakers are putting oil and gas companies’ profits above our children’s futures. They need to stop right now. Thanks.

Read Professor Stavins newest blog offering thoughts on his recent podcast discussion with Amy Harder, the founding Executive Editor of Cipher News.
"A few days ago, I posted at this blog my personal take on what happened at COP-28 in Dubai (and what didn’t happen).  Feedback from readers indicates that some people found my assessment helpful and realistic, but it’s conceivable that some found it insufficiently enthusiastic.  So, today, I’m pleased to offer some potential balance."

Weekly(ish) Update, 15 February 2023
An interesting analysis compares the climate change impact of subsidies for e-bikes vs. electric cars and SUVs. It’s true that an electric car replaces more gasoline-powered miles. E-bikes are a lot less expensive, though, so smaller subsidies are needed to encourage purchases. The bottom line, comparing proposals in Maryland and Washington, DC, is that electric car subsidies cost about $4.42 per displaced gasoline mile, while e-bike rebates cost about $3.10 per mile. Though this study doesn’t mention it, e-bikes are also likely to primarily replace short trips, for which gasoline vehicles are less efficient.
The Volta Foundation is a trade organization for battery professionals. Their annual report is a good look at the state of   the battery industry, looking at technology, supply chain issues, and more.
Elsewhere in the battery world, researchers at Tokyo University of Science have been looking at alternative cathode materials for magnesium-vanadium batteries. Magnesium is attractive because it’s more abundant than lithium and offers better energy density, but so far its cycling performance has been unreliable. In their latest results, they appear to have identified a highly stable alloy with superior charge-discharge properties.
In buildings, natural light is good, but solar heating can be bad. Electrochromatic windows can become more or less opaque in order to balance the two, but they are expensive and have a limited operating range. As an alternative, engineers at the University of Toronto have demonstrated a prototype microfluidics system inspired by squid skin. Pigments or particles flow through an array of channels, changing the wavelength of light that can pass through the window.

"The Cost of Inaction: Why We Can't Afford to Ignore Climate Change Anymore"
1. Introduction : Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and its impacts are already being felt around the world. Simply put, climate change refers to the long-term changes in global temperatures, weather patterns, and other environmental factors that are caused by human activity. The primary driver of climate change is the burning of fossil fuels, which releases…

Threats to the Grid & Electricity Reliability
It has now become noticed by the mainstream news that much of the U.S. will suffer Blackouts and electricity shortages as a result of insufficient reliable, dispatchable, affordable generation being built to replace the coal plants that are currently out of favor by government Regulations and climate policy. I have been predicting this and preaching for common sense energy policies for years.…

[Jeju Island is] taking action immediately with policies, with technologies, with real implementation. And that’s why other parts of the world – the mayor of New York City, the mayor of Paris, the local officials who have been making impressive statements about their targets and objectives for the long term – can look to Jeju Island to actually see what they can do tomorrow

Weekly Update, 3 January 2023
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will require home builders and developers to install solar panels on new construction. The plan, one of Japan's first to address both residential and office construction, was approved by the municipal assembly on December 18. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2022/12/18/national/tokyo-solar-mandate-shift/
While this article is about a short window for excellent pricing on the Chevy Bolt, it also illustrates just how complicated the various climate-oriented tax credits and incentives can be. EV incentives collide with incentives to promote US manufacturing, with extra complexity from state incentives and corporate discounts. https://electrek.co/2022/12/20/the-chevy-bolt-is-about-to-be-a-screaming-deal-at-least-until-march/
The US Postal Service is an independent agency, only indirectly controlled by the government. So the announcement that they're building out their electric vehicle fleet is a big deal. They had previously resisted, but now making the switch puts pressure on their private sector competitors. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2022/12/20/usps-ev-vehicles/
It gets cold in upstate New York. Having the state phase out combustion-based heating is a major incentive to heat pump manufacturers to improve their cold weather performance. https://www.syracuse.com/news/2022/12/breaking-ny-plans-to-change-the-way-you-heat-your-home-gas-oil-propane-furnaces-to-be-phased-out.html
