CineSpace Lighting and Grip (formerly EUE Screen Gems Studios) - KJ Roberts

This will be my final blog post from my lighting and grip internship with CineSpace!!

Not too many updates from my last post- we’re still re-branding everything following the company switchover, so I’ll use this time to reflect on my experience as a whole.

Naturally, I’m a producer, but I found myself not knowing much about film equipment at all. I took on this internship as a challenge and learning opportunity to learn the ropes of one of the most critical elements of the art of filmmaking. Lighting and grip.

Upon my first visit to the studio, I was surprised by the sheer amount of equipment. In a typical day, I regularly work with millions of dollars worth of equipment- that I was initially very hesitant to be around. But now, thanks to the awesome folks at CineSpace, I can confidently say that I know my way entirely in and out of lights, more specifically what looks good, what is the post practical, and how efficient (or over the top) lighting can be on set.

I’ve since been on sets for student films, and even if I’m not in a lighting and grip role, I feel confident to lend a helping hand when needed and I have a good idea of what lights we should use depending on the desired result.

I feel incredibly confident in my ability to handle industry grade equipment, and would happily take a job in this field if presented with the opportunity.

A big shoutout to Keith, Carly, Alex, Melanie, Simon, and Lawson- thank you all for everything you’ve all taught me, and for providing me with the tools to be a more versatile asset to the industry!!

Jesse took the Chicago PD part out of his instagram bio and everyone's 😭😭😭cryyying😭😭😭 and yes it's sad but I'm honestly kinda relieved that:

He left the "Actor" part in. So probably NOT turning into a full time director or golfer, phew!!

Maybe this means he's got a new project coming, or is at least auditioning/planning to audition soon?

All I want is to see him onscreen again, and this gives me hope it will happen. 🤞

A very plausible explanation, indeed.

Does he not live in Chicago full time? I thought his family was pretty settled there. Regardless, yeah it's definitely possible he was just checking in and hanging out with the cast and crew.

Do you think Jesse is filming some smaller scenes on set in Cinespace that he’s been spotted with the cast and crew out and about? Because that one article did suggest they are looking at episode 8-9 and filming his exit…so could it be the writers are having Jay leave the unit/going undercover in episode 3 but are giving us smaller snippets of upsteads home life or him confiding in another team member about this change…until his final exit in the fall?

I have zero clue what is going on. Every time I think I’ve got a good grasp on an idea, more information comes out and I’m confused all over again, so I’m just done speculating for now.

This past month has been an ABSOLUTE BLAST!

As most of you may know, Screen Gems is now owned by CineSpace, and there has been a lengthy and ongoing transition process. I’ve been able to be a part of said process that involves re-branding what is probably millions of dollars worth of equipment on a daily basis.

We all know the Screen Gems logo. The iconic red hurricane. It is plastered on EVERY piece of equipment owned by the studio. What happens when that studio is bought out? You gotta replace it!

We’ve been in every corner of the studio cataloguing equipment, then rebranding it. We’ve come a long way in the rebranding process, and it’s not over yet.

To help with the process, I even came in an extra day during fall break, as it is a LOT of work.

I have also had the opportunity to learn more about power distribution- (those huge 18K’s don’t just plug into an outlet!). There’s a whole process that goes into auditioning just ONE light, but I can now say I’m confident in my ability to set one of the big one’s up if I’m ever called to do so.

Also, shout out to my awesome team who has taught me everything I know and continues to do so. Even though I have a focus as a producer, I’d absolutely take a position working Lightning and Grip if it became available. I love getting my hands dirty and helping out.

Kein Lost Place: Space-Center Bremen

Das Space-Center Bremen ist nicht wirklich ein Lost Place. Vielmehr ist es ein Lost Place, der nicht mehr existiert und der heute einer anderen Nutzung zugeführt wurde. Aktuell verrottet in der Nähe dieses Platzes die Ariane-Rakete und weitere Attraktionen, die einst Bestandteil des Space-Center waren.

Eine Bremer Zeitung veröffentlichte vor kurzem einen Bericht. Das Modell der Ariane 4-Rakete und die Space-Park-Achterbahn sollen momentan wieder einmal günstig verscherbelt werden. Das war Grund genug für mich, einmal auf meiner Festplatte nach Fotos vom Space-Center zu suchen. Von der Schiffswerft zum Space-Center Bremen Auf dem Gelände an der Weser befand sich Ende 1983 die Schiffswerft der AG WESER. Im Zuge der Werftenkrise ging die Firma in Konkurs und wurde aufgelöst. Heute erinnern nur noch einige Gebäude an die AG. Für das mehr oder weniger brachliegende Gelände wurde Anfang der 1990er Jahre als Nachnutzung das Projekt Space-Center oder Space Park entwickelt. Ziel war es hier im modernen Edutainment-Stil ein einzigartiges Urban Entertainment Center zu errichten. Die Finanzierung erfolgte mit Subventionen des Landes Bremen. Nach der Planungs- und Bauphase wurde das Space-Center im Februar 2004 eröffnet.

Raumfahrtattraktion für die Stadt der Luft- und Raumfahrt Bremen Hauptthema des ersten überdachten Freizeitparks in Deutschland war die Raumfahrt. Bremen als Stadt der Raumfahrt bietet sich förmlich zu diesem Thema an. Neben den Raumfahrtthemen waren in der modernen Entertainment-Anlage auch bekannte Science-Fiction-Serien wie Star Trek und Stargate konzipiert. Ein Cinespace Multiplex Kino ergänzte den Betrieb. Zuviel Optimismus in der Planung? Das Projekt sollten Gastronomie und ein Hotel begleiten. Als wirtschaftlicher Kernbereich waren 120 Einzelhandelsgeschäfte mit über 40.000 m² Verkaufsfläche und 40 Gastronomiebetriebe geplant. Jedoch bereits in der Bauphase zeigte sich, dass der Einzelhandelsbereich stark überdimensioniert war. Es ließen sich keine Ankermieter gewinnen, so dass bis zur Eröffnung kein Einzelhandel vorhanden war. Der Weg des Besuchers führte vom Haupteingang des Gebäudes durch die zwei Seitenflügel entlang verschlossener Ladenzeilen.

Nach einem Betrieb der Anlage von nur sieben Monaten zeigte sich, dass die mit 1,3 Millionen kalkulierten Besucherzahlen nicht erreicht werden. Aufgrund dieser mangelnder Besucherzahlen und weiterem wirtschaftlichen Misserfolges schloss das Space-Center im September 2004 nach nur sieben Monaten. Damit reiht sich dieses Projekt in der Reihe vieler Investitionsruinen im ohnehin klammen kleinsten Bundesland ein. Als Gründe für den Niedergang werden oft hohe Eintrittspreise, karges Entertainment-Angebot und die mangelnde gastronomische Infrastruktur genannt. Das ursprüngliche Konzept sah vor, dass Besucher nur die Fahrgeschäfte zahlen sollten, welche sie auch nutzen wollten. In der Umsetzung wurde aber ein Komplettpreis angeboten. Damit wurde allerdings auch der Zugang zu einem Teil der Gastronomie beschränkt. Nämlich dem, welcher ohnehin im Bereich der Fahrgeschäfte war. Ausser einem überteuerten Fast-Food-Imbiss gab es da aber nichts. Schade eigentlich, dass diese Attraktion nach nur kurzer Zeit aufgehört hat zu existieren. Aber viele große und vom Steuerzahler geförderte Wunschprojekte werden schnell zu Investitionsruinen in Bremen. Über die Gründe dafür kann man nur spekulieren. Mit 650 Millionen Euro ist das Space-Center Bremen eine der grössten Baupleiten der Nachkriegsgeschichte.

Vom Gedanken her war das Thema eines Spacesparkes sicher nicht schlecht. Vor allem die Verbindung zwischen realer Raumfahrt und den bekannten Science-Fiction-Serien hätte eigentlich ein Touristenmagnet werden können. Nur in der Umsetzung und der überaus euphorischen Planung lagen die Schwachstellen. Einen Bericht vom letzten Tag des Freizeitparks gibt es hier zu lesen. Wiederauferstehung als Einkaufszentrum Nach einigen Jahren der Unklarheit und mehrerer Verkäufe wurde das Gelände nach erfolgtem Umbau 2009  als Waterfront Einkaufscenter neu eröffnet. Als Hauptmieter fand sich der Billig-Textilhändler PRIMARK, der hier in Bremen seine erste deutsche Niederlassung eröffnete. Nun stellt sich das einstige Space-Center als Einkaufszentrum mit Erlebnis-Charakter dar. Für mich nur ein weiteres 08-15-Shoppingcenter mit Geschäften der üblichen Ketten. Ein weiterer Konsumtempel mit Fast-Food-Angeboten. Highlights kann man an der Waterfront-Promenade direkt an der Weser und dem Multiplex-Kino finden. Schade eigentlich! Ein Raumfahrtzentrum hätte Bremen gut gestanden. Stattdessen haben wir eine weitere Shoppingmeile erhalten. Read the full article

You’d swear I was living in LA running a private detective agency for doggie scraps out of my evil dead shed. At least it fills the gap in my resume. Limited liability aside? I’m the only one out here getting stalked by Weta digital proud boy lotr larpers from New Zealand on tumblr. I guess that is what happens when you get detained illegally in Gold Coast Australia on the way back from Wellington. Ghost in the shell was a shit movie. This is why I’ve had to block half my friends list on here. I guess I should have bribed cinespace while they were filming Chicago PD outside my mailbox when I didn’t have the chance. If you can’t make it here? Then you can’t make it anywhere. See you on the next season of the chi. We built this city with a radioactive highway to the danger zone . Regarding film stages and sets, how many can they fit? Is there a chance they would take the Upstead apartment down if they need to build others? I saw people saying that the inside of the apartment is on a stage, but we don't know that for sure.

First of all, they're big! If you watch the set tour LaRoyce did a few years back, it shows the 21st district (bullpen, offices, break room, locker room, interrogation room, observation room, wire room, and front desk) as well as Hailey's old apartment all in stage 10 at Cinespace. That's very, very good use of space, and a lot of it.

I'm assuming CPD has more than one stage available for them, though I suppose I don't know that for sure. The good news is that there is a such thing as a swing set. That's a set that is constructed specifically to be put up, taken down, or moved around depending on when it's needed. Hailey's old apartment is a great example of that. We have seen it used for Antonio, Hailey, Violet, Celeste (I think), and maybe a couple of other times in the OC universe. If it isn't a set that will be used every episode- like the district- it can often be put up and taken down quickly (usually one day).

All that to say, we don't know for sure that the Upstead apartment set is up at this moment. It was filmed on a stage though so if they need it again, they can likely put it up quickly if need be.
