Streaming media is multimedia that is constantly received by and presented to an end-userwhile being delivered by a provider. The verb to stream refers to the process of delivering orobtaining media in this manner.[clarification needed] Streaming refers to the deliverymethod of the medium, rather than the medium itself. Distinguishing delivery method fromthe media distributed applies specifically to telecommunications networks, as most of thedelivery systems are either inherently streaming (e.g. radio, television, streaming apps) orinherently non-streaming (e.g. books, video cassettes, audio CDs). There are challengeswith streaming content on the Internet. For example, users whose Internet connectionlacks sufficient bandwidth may experience stops, lags, or slow buffering of the content. Andusers lacking compatible hardware or software systems may be unable to stream certaincontent. Live streaming is the delivery of Internet content in real-time much as livetelevision broadcasts content over

the airwaves via a television signal. Live internet streaming requires a form of source media(e.g. a video camera, an audio interface, screen capture software), an encoder to digitize thecontent, a media publisher, and a content delivery network to distribute and deliver thecontent. Live streaming does not need to be recorded at the origination point, although itfrequently is. Streaming is an alternative to file downloading, a process in which the end-user obtains the entire file for the content before watching or listening to it. Throughstreaming, an end-user can use their media player to start playing digital video or digitalaudio content before the entire file has been transmitted. The term “streaming media” canapply to media other than video and audio, such as live closed captioning, ticker tape, andreal-time text, which are all considered “streaming text”.

Copyright is a type of intellectual property that gives its owner the exclusive right to make copies of a creative work, usually for a limited time. The creative work may be in a literary, artistic, educational, or musical form. Copyright is intended to protect the original expression of an idea in the form of a creative work, but not the idea itself. A copyright is subject to limitations based on public interest considerations, such as the fair use doctrine in the United States.

Some jurisdictions require “fixing” copyrighted works in a tangible form. It is widely believed that copyrights are a must to foster cultural diversity and creativity. This argument has been supported by many examples such as Millet and Van Gogh, Picasso, Manet, and Monet, etc.

Raynard Eller, 94

Mr. Raynard Arnold Eller, age 94 of Purlear passed away Sunday, October 13, 2019 at his home.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Wilkesboro Baptist Church with Dr. Chris Hefner officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 PM                 prior to the service at the church.

Burial with Military Honors by Marine Corps League Brushy Mtn. Detachment # 1187 will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park.  

Mr. Eller was born July 12, 1925 in Wilkes County to Percy and Ora Mae Eller.  He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.  He was a member of Wilkesboro Baptist Church.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Angelyn Blackburn Eller, five brothers, James M. Eller, twin brother Raymond Eller, Edward G. Eller, Max P. Eller and Rex J. Eller.

He is survived by one daughter, Bettie Kroutil and husband Bob of Santa Fe, New Mexico and two sons, Ron Eller and wife Beth of Huntersville and Rich Eller and wife Patty of Franklin, TN, four grandchildren, Josh Eller, Alison Eller, Jack Fornadel and Abbie Richard and three great grandchildren, Sterling Richard, Kyrie Richard and Edye Sandvick, three sisters, Christine Eller and Haline Eller both of Wilkesboro and Nancy Barnes of Tega Cay, SC and one brother, Kent Eller of Pulear.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Pallative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030 or Wilkesboro Baptist Church, PO Box 61, Wilkesboro, NC 28697.

Grayson Fender,  72

Mr. Grayson Mack Fender, age 72 of Traphill, passed away Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC.

Funeral services were  , October 15,  at Old Roaring River Primitive

Baptist Church, Austin Traphill Road with Elder John Lyon, Elder Lowell Hopkins, Elder Carlton Brown, Elder George Paul and Elder Tommy Pegram officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.  .

Mr. Fender was born February 12, 1947 in

Alleghany County to George Lundy and Gladys Clyde Dowell Fender. He retired from Chatham Manufacturing in Elkin and Textiles, Inc. in Ronda and was a member of Old Roaring River Primitive Baptist Church for 24 years having served as a Deacon for 23 years. Grayson dearly loved his family, neighbors and friends from church. He loved helping his family, neighbors and hunting and fishing. He also loved farming.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Fender is survived by his wife; Rachel Lyon Fender of the home, a daughter; Charlotte Mae Fender Sloan and husband Matthew of Traphill, a son; Randel Mack Fender and wife Etta of Traphill, three grandchildren; Jordan Fender and wife Maygan, Austin Sloan and Garrett Fender and wife Lakyn, three step grandchildren; Tiffani Galloway, Rachel Higgins and Luke Higgins, expecting two great grandchildren in December and April, two brothers; Jim Fender and wife Ellen of Sparta and Bob Fender of Elkin and special friends; Billy Dowell and Bobby Dowell.

Pallbearers were Guy Brown, Jordan Fender, Garrett Fender, Austin Sloan, Keith Lyon, David Spicer, Micky Durham and Derek Brown.

The family wishes to give a Special Thanks to Mtn. Valley Hospice for their care of Mr. Fender.

Mr. Charlie Harold Eller, age 70 of Purlear passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at his home.

Graveside Services were October 9, 2019 at New  Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Purlear with Rev. Dean Crane officiating.  

Mr. Eller was born January 5, 1949 in Wilkes County to Clyde Thomas and Nora Belle Faw Eller.  He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and retired from Gardner Glass.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters; Ernestine Wiles and Arliene LeFever, three brothers; Franklin Eller, Willie Eller and Jimmy Eller, three sisters-in-law; Mazie Eller, Jewel Eller and Judy Eller, two brothers-in-law; Glenn Wiles and Fred LeFever.

He is survived by his wife: Linda Wyatt Eller of the home, one daughter; Michelle Ann Hogan and husband Paul of Hope Mills and one son; Christopher "Chris" Harold and wife Carene of Ferguson, five grandchildren; Kasey Bolick, Elizabeth Lentz, Ashley Hogan, Rebecca Hogan and Steven Hogan, four great grandchildren; Harmony Swaenepoel, Makenzie Murph, Lillian Murph and Daniel Murph, three sisters; Loriene Castle and husband Lloyd of Wilkesboro, Christine Edmonds and husband Bill of Abingdon, VA. Maxine Johnson and husband Tony of Traphill, four brothers; Filmore Eller and wife Alberta of Wilkesboro, Richard Eller of Purlear, Marvin Eller of Wilkesboro and Max Eller and wife Janice of Hays and two sisters-in-law; Betty Eller and Annie Lee Eller both of Wilkesboro.

Johnny Ray Shepherd, age 72, of Archdale, passed away Monday, October 7, 2019 at High Point Medical Center. Johnny was born June 26, 1947 in Wilkes County to Harlie C. and Della Stamper Shepherd. He was owner of JR Shepherd Electrical Repair. Johnny enjoyed playing the guitar, the harmonica, fishing, and his performance cars. He especially loved spending time with his family. Mr. Shepherd was preceded in death by his father and his mother, Della Stamper Shepherd Frazier.            

Surviving are his son, Brian Shepherd and spouse Melissa of Thomasville; grandchildren, Blake and Luke Shepherd both of Thomasville; brother, Buster Shepherd and spouse Peggy of Jamestown; and sister, Marie Shepherd Fite and spouse Bobby of Flint, Texas.

Funeral service was October 9,  at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gene Shepherd officiating. Burial  followed in Mountlawn Memorial Park.  Flowers will be accepted.

Edward Eugene Brown, age 87, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2019 at his home. Edward was born February 13, 1932 in Wilkes County to Ray and Maude Prevette Brown. Mr. Brown was a member of Second Street Baptist Church. He loved to farm his cattle when he was able; loved his children and grandchildren. Edward was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Renegar Brown; daughter, Wanda Cleary and spouse Ronnie of Hays; son, Tommy Brown and spouse Rebecca of North Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Samantha Lusk and spouse Freddie of North Wilkesboro, Kristy Cothren and spouse Marty of Hays, Amanda Robinson and spouse Stephen of Asheville, Daniel Brown and spouse Keri of North Wilkesboro; great granddaughters, Sydney Massengill, Mary Cothren and Katie Cothren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was October 9,   at Haymeadow Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Dillard, Pastor Michael Golden and Daniel Brown officiating. Burial   followed  in the church cemetery.   Flowers will be accepted.

Mrs. Callie Mae Johnson Haynes, age 88 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2019 at her home.

Mrs. Haynes was born January 16, 1931 in Wilkes County to William Beshears and Belva Johnson. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. For over 60 years she was the Co-Owner of the Beauty Bazaar in North Wilkesboro.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Edgar Gray Haynes, Sr. and a sister; Minne Rae Ashley.

She is survived by a son; Edgar Gray Haynes, Jr. and wife Angela M. Haynes of North Wilkesboro, two grandchildren; Heather Lynn Haynes and Alicia Dawn Haynes and a niece; Jenny Sale.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that memorials be made to Wake Forest Care at Home Hospice 126 Executive  Drive Suite 110 Wilkesboro, NC 28697.

 Patty Hendren, 67

Mrs. Patty Sue Link Hendren, age 67 of Hays, passed away Saturday, October 5, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family.

Funeral services were  October 10th,  at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Brother Larry Adams and Mr. Kevin Prevette officiating. Burial was in New Light Baptist Church #1 Cemetery.  

       Mrs. Hendren was born September 12, 1952 in Wilkes County to William Baxter Link (Bill) and wife Thelma Marie Kelly Link. She was retired from Tyson Foods. Mrs. Hendren was a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro.

       In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son; Russell Lee Hendren and a brother; Larry Link (Bill).

       She is survived by a daughter; Dotty Cheek of Hays, a son; Mickey Hendren and wife Denise of Greeley, CO, five grandchildren; Bethany Hendren, Justin Caudill, Justin Hendren, Jasmine Johnson and Darius Jackson, a twin sister; Kathy Prevette and husband Perry of North Wilkesboro and a special nephew Kevin Prevette.

       The family wishes to thank all those that helped Patty during her extended illness. All of the friends, caretakers and visitors during that time are too many to name but each one is greatly appreciated by the family. Thanks also to Medi Home Health and Hospice.

The Incredible Shrinking Wallet - The New York Times

As co-owner of Billykirk, a leather goods brand based in Jersey City, N.J., Chris Bray has devoted the past 20 years to hand-crafting wallets, among other accessories. He can wax philosophical about how “your oils, your skin, your travels” affect the wallet that you carry around. But when Mr. Bray goes out at night, he takes just his ID, one credit card and a few business cards, tucked into a slim card case.“Simplify your life,” he said. “Nine out of ten times, if you have a bi-fold wallet, you’ve got crap in there you don’t need. You’ve got a ticket stub from three years ago.”This from a man who sells bi-fold wallets in four colors. But in recent years, the physical wallet’s central role in our lives has been greatly reduced, as have the size of wallets themselves. As tech companies have introduced mobile apps like Apple Pay and Google Pay in an effort to make the smartphone into a digital wallet, “real” ones — long a fallback of the holiday gift season — are shrinking, or disappearing altogether. Some are becoming gizmos themselves, as if to seem more current: popping out cards with the press of a button and offering benefits like locating services or radio-frequency identification (RFID) blocking, intended to protect against credit-card or identity theft.For men, the classic multi-pocketed model is losing popularity to card cases like the one Mr. Bray carries. They aren’t much bigger than a credit card, and slip easily into a front pocket.Bernard Capulong, the co-founder and editor in chief of Everyday Carry, a men’s gear website, called them “minimalist wallets,” adding, “What’s popular now is as minimal as you can get.”Shinola, a Detroit-based watch and accessories brand, sells the Slim Bifold and the Slim Bifold 2.0 for “pared-down simplicity.” The Slimwallet and Miniwallet by the Dutch company Secrid are leather-wrapped metal cases that can only comfortably hold around four cards. Brands like Ridge, Dango and Trayvax offer similar styles.Mr. Capulong carries a leather card case by Veilance with only two pockets. “The seams are bonded, not stitched,” he said. “So it’s durable and minimalist. I keep maybe eight cards total and a $20 bill folded twice so it takes no space.”Augusto Gomez, who was behind the Prada counter in the men’s arcade inside Bloomingdale’s Manhattan flagship on a recent afternoon, said wallets still ranked as a popular gift, though there were no customers shopping for them at that moment.“Men tend to get things we need,” Mr. Gomez said. “Small items — key chains, wallets. Things they notice you’ve had too long and it’s falling apart.” He added, “I’d say 65 percent of men don’t carry cash anymore. But some still do.” In women’s fashion, leather and nylon belt bags by brands like Gucci, Balenciaga and Supreme, which leave hands free, are also reducing the need for bulky purses and long wallets.“As bags get smaller, the easiest thing to take space away from is the wallet,” said Megs Mahoney Dusil, the founder of PurseBlog, which reviews bags and other accessories. “The shrinking of the wallet allows for more carrying of day-to-day essential items.”Ms. Mahoney used to carry a continental wallet — the zip-around kind with room for receipts and even a passport — but switched recently to a Gucci card case, which she slips inside a Fendi “Peekaboo” bag.“Micro mini” or “toy” bags make plain the diminished role of cash, at least for celebrities and the rich. Last month, Lizzo showed up to the American Music Awards with a Valentino bag so small the strap fit one finger. The interior was big enough to contain a single mint.The French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus sells a 4.5 inch handbag called Le Chiquito, which might hold a change purse. The absurdly tiny Le Petit Chiquito, introduced during Paris Fashion Week last February and retailing for $258, barely holds a few loose coins.

Stuffing It

For centuries, going all the way back to the introduction of paper currency in America in the late 1600s, the wallet has been a traveling bank vault and all-purpose file cabinet for men and women, a place to keep checks, cash and personal ephemera.“I remember my dad’s wallet,” said Leland Grossman, a strategist for a Manhattan-based creative agency. “He had receipts, cards, pictures and a million things. That was my ethos originally. I kept a folded two-dollar bill. I had a Steve Jobs quote: ‘Stay hungry, stay foolish.’”A 1998 episode of “Seinfeld” known to fans as “George’s Exploding Wallet” satirized this tendency to overstuff. The George Costanza character is carrying a wallet so engorged with random items — Irish currency; a rewards card valid at any participating Orlando-area Exxon station — that he can barely close it.“I need everything in there,” George tells Jerry defensively at their favorite diner, before adding Sweet & Low packets to the jumble.By the end of the episode, George is complaining that his back is killing him.Played today, the scene would look strange, even antiquated. “Before, you used to carry everything in a wallet, from your medical card to store cards and receipts,” said Daniel Caudill, the creative director for Shinola. “Now, all of that lives on our phones.”The wallet has seen its responsibilities slowly taken away. Debit cards have all but eliminated the need to carry cash. No one carries checks anymore. Receipts can be emailed. Photos and rewards cards have gone digital.A lot of millennials and members of Gen Z no longer want to be paid in cash; they prefer payment services like Venmo, leavened by emojis, to pad their digital wallets. The future is not a hunk of cowhide in your back pocket. The future is smartphone apps, contactless cards and, ultimately perhaps, a machine that scans your brain for total frictionless life.As if the physical wallet didn’t have enough problems, there’s now an accessory called the Wallet Slayer ($14.99): a sleeve that fits over your smartphone and holds three cards plus cash. As with phone cases before it, a luxury version cannot be far behind.Might the wallet disappear altogether? Increasingly, businesses are no longer accepting cash. In China, big cities like Beijing and Hangzhou have already gone almost entirely cashless, requiring payment by mobile device, which has flummoxed tourists but also made wallets unnecessary.Recently, Shinola has received requests from young urbanites to make a case to hold just one card — ID, said Mr. Caudill, the creative director. Everything else is arguably extraneous.“It’s an aspirational dream for now,” said Mr. Capulong of Everyday Carry. “We’re not quite there yet.”Many retailers in the United States aren’t yet set up to accept mobile payment methods, especially in areas outside big cities. There are also security concerns about having everything on one device. And old habits have a way of hanging on. “I have Apple Pay on my phone, but I use it shockingly little,” Mr. Grossman said. He still carries the Bottega Veneta bi-fold wallet that he bought in college, though he has streamlined its contents. Mr. Grossman pointed to the way watches have remained a steady, if somewhat marginalized, accessory in the digital era. While wallets aren’t luxury status symbols in the same way, he allowed, “You develop wear and tear that gives it character like clothing. It’s part of your journey. It’s a staple of the wardrobe.”Mr. Bray of Billykirk, who has a vested interest in the wallet sticking around, also argued for its indispensability. MerleFest draws 75,000

MerleFest,    presented by Window World, has officially come to a close, but not without    a number of electric collaborations, spontaneous sit-ins, and world-class    performances. 

Wynonna &    The Big Noise, Amos Lee, Tyler Childers, Sam Bush Band, Brandi Carlile, and The Avett Brothers all brought    extra MerleFest energy to the Watson Stage, marking another successful year    for the long-running festival.

Early estimates    show that from its start on Thursday, April 25, to its close on Sunday,    April 28, participation over the festival’s four days exceeded 75,000    attendees and artists from across the world.

MerleFest, held    on the campus of Wilkes     Community College, is    the primary fundraiser for the WCC Foundation, which funds scholarships,    capital projects, and other educational needs.

“We’ve had an incredible weekend,”    Festival Director Ted Hagaman said. “With over 100 artists on 13 stages    over the four days, we again feel we succeeded in providing a quality and    successful event for all involved. Preliminary numbers show we attracted    thousands of fans from all over the world. We appreciate their support.    This event could not happen without the work and dedication of our    4,500-plus volunteers and the many great safety and service agencies in Northwestern North Carolina. We’re already looking    forward to MerleFest 2020.”

Thursday

Chatham    County Line kicked off the 32nd annual    MerleFest with a big “newgrass” bang. At the top of their game,    Raleigh-based Chatham County Line appeared right at home on one of the    biggest stages their home state has to offer. After Thursday’s    sunset, Wynonna Judd and her band, The Big Noise, set    about conjuring up enough rock and roll, blues, and country juju to knock    the first-day crowd right off their feet. Once the crowd had recovered, the    ones left with enough energy to carry on into the wee hours were treated    with more electric boogie music in the form of Donna The Buffalo.    Sporting dancey rhythms and electric improvisation, Donna proved to be the    ultimate weekend ice-breakers, encouraging the late night crowd to let    loose during their First Night Dance on the Bojangles’ Dance Stage. 

Friday

Before the    sun had set on Friday, patrons were treated to show-stopping sets from the    likes of Texas    troubadour Radney Foster, Boston-based bluegrassers Mile    Twelve, and the soft folk harmonies and humorous musings of The    Milk Carton Kids. Upon the close of the Chris Austin Songwriting    Competition, festival first-timer Amos Lee took the Watson    Stage with his unique blend of soulful Americana.Tyler Childers closed    out the Watson Stage with his now famous concoction of mountain music, old    school country, and 1960s The Band-ish rock and roll. Under the bright    stage lights, Childers rollicked through songs off of his award-winning 2017    album “Purgatory” to the delight of fans, some of whom had traveled to    MerleFest on Childers’ merit alone. During Childers’ set, eclectic folk    rockers Scythian set up in the Dance Tent for their second set of the day,    the annual Friday Night Dance. Keeping the night owls rocking until almost    midnight, Scythian reminded fans just how fun their music can    be. 

Saturday

Saturday    saw Chris Austin Songwriting Competition winners perform    on the Cabin Stage to an audience eager to hear these up-and-coming songwriters    before they’ve hit the big time. Now in its 27th year, the contest is an    extraordinary opportunity for aspiring writers to have their original songs    heard and judged by a panel of music industry professionals (Joey Ryan and    Kenneth Pattengale, better known as The Milk Carton Kids, Cruz    Contreras of The Black Lillies, and Texas-troubadour Radney    Foster), under the direction of volunteer contest chairperson, Grammy    Award-winning singer/songwriter Jim Lauderdale.

The first    round of the CASC took place in Nashville,     Tenn., and was narrowed down    from 970 entries to 12 finalists representing four categories: bluegrass,    country, general and Gospel/inspirational.

Each of the    12 finalists received admission and lodging for three nights at MerleFest.    Finalists attended a workshop Friday morning given by D’Addario prior to    the finals. After the contest, all finalists took part in a songwriting    mentoring session with Jim Lauderdale and the on-site judges. The    first-place winners in each category received $600 cash from MerleFest, a    performance at the Cabin Stage on Friday night, and a 20-minute set on    Saturday at the Cabin Stage. In addition, the first-place winners    received a live performance/recording session with Saloon Studios Live,    D’Addario strings, Shubb Capos, and their winning song will be aired on    WNCW 88.7. Net proceeds from the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest help    support the Wilkes Community College Chris Austin Memorial Scholarship. See    below for a complete listing of winners and finalists.

On    Saturday, Molly Tuttle returned to the MerleFest stage for    the first time since she won the Chris Austin Songwriting Competition in    2012. A rabid crowd ate up every guitar lick and melody Tuttle played as    she continues to push the envelope of what can be played on a dreadnaught    guitar. The Waybacks’ annual Hillside Album Hour found the    bay-area band covering Led Zeppelin IV in    its entirety with Sarah Dugas (formerly of The Duhks) handling most of the    vocal duties and Sam Bush, Jens Kruger, Red Young, and Tony Williamson    backing them up for yet another memorable Saturday afternoon set. Sam    Bush Band lit up the Watson Stage ahead of Brandi Carlile, running    through his career-spanning catalog of “New Grass” tunes and closing with    his new rousing rock and roll anthem, “Stop The Violence”. Traditional Bluegrass super group Earls of Leicester once    again paid excellent homage to the giants of the genre, Lester Flatt and    Earl Scruggs. In an era of progression for the genre, the Earls brand of    picking reminded the crowd that it’s perfectly OK to stick with tradition    from time to time. Brandi Carlile and her band closed out    Saturday with her signature songwriting style and vocal fireworks. Drawing    from her newest release, “By The Way, I Forgive You,” and then diving    deeper into her past works, Carlile and longtime musical partners Tim and    Phil Hanseroth belted and whispered in close three-part harmonies well    enough to make every last MerleFest attendee’s jaw drop. To close out    an already special night, Sunday headliners Seth and Scott Avett of    The Avett Brothers joined Carlile around a single mic at the front edge of    the Watson Stage and performed the Avett’s “Murder In The City”,    drawing a huge reaction from the already stunned crowd.

North    Carolina Governor Roy Cooper introduced Steep    Canyon Rangers Sunday afternoon on the Watson Stage. Late last    year, Gov. Cooper declared 2019 to be North Carolina’s    “Year of Music”, adding, “from bluegrass to the blues, from gospel to funk,    from beach music to indie and hip hop, North Carolina is the birthplace of many    musical styles and iconic performers.” Gov. Cooper was in attendance    for Steep Canyon Rangers’ “North Carolina Songbook” set on the Watson Stage    which dove into the rich history of the region’s music, specifically the    musical heritage of their—and the festival’s—home state, and solidified their    place in MerleFest lore. Bluegrass    patriarch and hair-style pioneer Del McCoury celebrated his 80th birthday    surrounded by friends, family, and the Del McCoury Band. Del and the boys    fired up the Hillside Stage, highlighting his eight-decade milestone with    class and style that only the McCourys can provide. North Carolina’s own The Avett    Brothers closed out the festival after having joined their father,    Jim Avett, for Sunday’s annual Gospel Hour. On the Watson Stage,    gladly playing tunes that spanned their almost-two-decade long career, The    Avett Brothers had the crowd singing along from the very first line. While    many MerleFest patrons have seen the Avetts at the festival before, this    performance proved that the brothers and their band have now truly transcended    to the next level of much-deserved stardom.

Ellen Turner, 88

Mrs. Ellen Roten Turner, age 88 of North Wilkesboro passed away Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Wilkes Senior Village.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, January 8,  at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton with Rev. Kenny Roten officiating.                        Mrs. Turner was born April 29, 1931 in Wilkes County to Joe and Bessie Eller Roten.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.  

She is survived by one son; Floyd E. Roten and wife Judy N. Roten of Wilkesboro, two grandchildren; Amber Johnson and husband Ken of Wilkesboro, Floyd J. Roten and wife Rebekah of Mebane, nine great grandchildren; Titus, Kaden, Silas, Masyn and Mia Johnson of Wilkes County, Jaxon Floyd Roten of Mebane, Evyn R. Wyatt, Xander C. Wyatt and Max Craft of Millers Creek, one sister; Alice Whitley of Wilkesboro and one brother; Henrey Roten and wife Delores of Kannapolis.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Brenner's Children Hospital, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157.

 Cynthia Wingler, 78

Cynthia Rector Wingler, our sweet Nana, peacefully went to her eternal home on January 3, 2020 at the, as she said, "older than dirt" age of 78.  She was surrounded by her "best buddies" in her home when her gentle spirit was released from her well-worn shell. She said, "If I knew I was gonna live this long I would've taken better care of myself." We're convinced she left before having to face another cold winter, "Oooshie!"

Cynthia was born to Kermit Rector and Louise Davis Rector on July 25, 1941 in Huntersville, NC. The reunion party has now begun with her parents and her humble big brother, Rev. Dean Rector and her best friend and identical twin sister, Sylvia Rector Caudill.

As a devoted and patient caregiver, Cynthia proudly served as an anesthetist for over 30 years at the Wilkes and surrounding area hospitals.  She left a lasting legacy of how grueling long hours can successfully be faced with the utmost safety and infectious laughter. She managed to do so while always looking her best with every hair in place.  Thanks, Louise Eller!    

Her son, David Wingler (the "thorn and her rose"), and daughter-in-law, Anita Wingler (she always liked her best:) as well as her two granddaughters, Caitlin and Kaleigh Wingler (that she loved the absolute most) will miss the daily excuse to eat ice cream, "Yummy, yummy".  She also leaves behind: brother-in-law Delmar Caudill, nephew Terry Rector (wife Vickie), and niece Kim Rector as well as her great nieces, nephews, and friends.  

A family graveside service will be held and a Celebration of Life event will take place when it's not so cold outside. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.  

In her memory, make someone laugh today (preferably in the most inappropriate time).  Laughter is the closest distance between two people.

JoAnn Blackburn, 76

Mrs. JoAnn Holleman Blackburn, age 76 of Roaring River, died Friday, January 3, 2020 at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 8,   at Roaring River Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Wood officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  

Mrs. Blackburn was born April 28, 1943 in Wilkes County to James E. and Hazel Love Holleman.  JoAnn was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and mother-in-law. She was a member of Roaring River Baptist Church and a devoted servant of Christ.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Carol Joy Holleman; and two brothers, James "Pete" Monroe Holleman and Bill Holleman.

She is survived by her husband, Charlie Uelius Blackburn, of the home; one daughter, Mary Ann Blackburn, of the home; one son, Randy Neal Blackburn and wife, Joan,  of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Alexandra Nicole Blackburn and Garrett Davis Blackburn; and one sister, Mary Edith Sparks of Roaring River.

 Frances Henderson, 92

Mrs. Frances Virginia Miller Henderson, age 92 of Moravian Falls, passed away Friday, January 3, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center.

Funeral services were January 5, at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Karen Roberts and Mr. Chuck Byers officiating. Burial was in Mountlawn Memorial Park.  

Mrs. Henderson was born February 19, 1927 in Wilkes County to Mayford Rotan Miller and Evelyn Harless Miller. Along with her husband, L. R. Henderson, Frances was co-owner and operator of Lithia Springs Greenhouses, where the couple made their living for more than 30 years. Mrs. Henderson loved her family, classical music, gardening, bird-watching, and was an avid Jeopardy fan. She was a member of the Wilkesboro United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; Lucius Ruffin Henderson (L.R.), three brothers; Sam Miller, Max Miller and Steve Miller and a grandson; Thomas Blaine Henderson.

Mrs. Henderson is survived by a son; Zach Henderson of Moravian Falls, a grandson; Daniel Henderson and wife Rayetta of Wilmington, two great grandchildren; Cole and Reagan, three sisters; Rebecca Holshouser, Shirley Wayland and Sandra Miller and three brothers; Barry Miller, Mike Miller and Tim Miller. The family will accept flowers.

 Georgia Faw, 90

Mrs. Georgia Mae Faw, age 90 passed away surrounded by her loving family after an extended illness on January 1, 2020. Georgia was born on September 26, 1929 in Wilkes County to George Odell and Ella Mae Day Moore. She lived in the Brushy Mountain Community of Wilkes County her entire life with the exception of a short time when she and husband, John Winfred Faw, lived in Blowing Rock, NC when they first married.

Georgia was preceded in death by her parents, George "Odell" and Ella Moore, a brother, Paul Moore, a sister, Altha Lee McNeil, an infant brother, Howard, and her husband, John Winfred Faw.  Georgia is survived by her children, Anita Crunk (Sid) of Moravian Falls, NC, Richard Faw and longtime companion, LouAnn Thompson, of Kannapolis, NC. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Sarah Brame (Phillip) of Winston-Salem, NC, Emily Crunk of Concord, NC, Tamara Faw of Wilkesboro, NC, and Tesha Hammonds (Chris) of North Wilkesboro, NC, a brother, Jack Moore, of Yadkinville, NC, and 7 great grandchildren.

A native of Wilkes County, NC  she and her husband, John Winfred Faw, married on July 9, 1946 and were married 61 years prior to his death on September 22, 2007.  She would often joke that her age was the only lie she ever told since John was her sweetheart throughout his time serving in World War II and they got married as soon as he was discharged from the army, going to York, SC to elope when she was 16 years old.  They lived for a time in Blowing Rock shortly after they were married but came back to Wilkes County to build their home in the 1950s. Georgia wanted children more than anything and God blessed her with two, a son and daughter.

Georgia wanted to be a stay-at-home mom when her children were young but, upon her youngest child starting school at Wilkesboro  Elementary School, Georgia began employment in the Wilkesboro School Cafeteria and worked there throughout the entire time her children were in school. Since cooking for others was the highlight of her life, she began work at the Northwestern Bank Cafeteria after her youngest child graduated from high school. When the bank cafeteria closed, she then began work at the Cottage House Restaurant and ended her employment years at Lowes Midtown Plaza in the deli.  She left public employment to babysit her daughter's two children which Georgia always said was the best job she ever had. Since John and Georgia's home was always the place for her children's friends to "hang out" when they were young, Georgia enjoyed the same with her grandchildren and had some of their friends who stayed with her as well.

Georgia was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church in the Brushy Mountain Community as long as her health allowed.  She loved attending church and her church family was important to her. Most importantly, she loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and served him in many ways over her lifetime from playing the autoharp with her father playing guitar in her younger days to teaching Sunday school, working with Vacation Bible School, working with the Women's Missionary Union, helping to prepare meals and chaperoning youth trips, among other things.  

With two heart attacks in the summer of 2016 started the decline of her health and she lived at home with assistance until July 2018 when she went to Villages of Wilkes Traditional Living. There she made friends who will always be dear to the heart of her family.  

Funeral Services were January 5, at New Hope Baptist Church in the Brushy Mtn. Community with Rev. Michael Blevins, Rev. Jonah Parker, and Rev. Scott Church officiating.

  Willard Lane, Jr, 73

Mr. Willard Lane, Jr, age 73, of Boomer, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at

his home.

Memorial services were January 6, at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Shane Pardue officiating.  

Mr. Lane was born October 9, 1946 in Wilkes County to Willard and Gladys Holder Lane. He was a United States Postal Employee for 42 years.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Mr. Lane is survived by his mother; Gladys Holder Lane of Moravian Falls, a sister; Judy Lane Bell and husband, Brad of Moravian Falls, two brothers; Ron Lane of Denton, NC and Mike Lane and companion, Jennifer Leone of Siler City, NC. a longtime friend and partner; Sandra Howell and a niece; Tracey Bell Repetto.

Allen McManus, 67

Mr. Allen Dale McManus, age 67 of Boomer, passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem.

Memorial services were January 4,   at Congo Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Luke Pyles officiating.  

Mr. McManus was born September 7, 1952 in Wilkes County to Jessie Howard McManus and Gewenith Worley McManus.. Allen received an Associate Degree in Physical Education from Wilkes Community College. He retired from Arlington Cemetery as the Director of Environmental Services. His many achievements included IEHA Director of Middle Atlantic District, Triad Chapter President for eight years, served as an officer for over 30 years in the Environmental Services Profession. Allen enjoyed playing golf, fishing and spending time with his family. Mr. McManus loved going to his church; Congo Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother; Vernon McManus.

Mr. McManus is survived by his wife; Princess Darlene Gwyn McManus of the home, three sons; Russ McManus of Woodbury, TN, Rocky McManus of North Wilkesboro and Brannon McManus of North Wilkesboro, a daughter; Kayla McManus Wilson and husband Quincy of Pfafftown, two step children; Megan Cox and Christy Cox both of Mt. Airy and a sister; Debby Nunn and husband Sam of Wilkesboro and eight grandchildren.

Brenda Hall-Cashion

Brenda Hall-Cashion of Wilkesboro died December 31, 2019.

She was born August 22, 1945 in Elkin, North Carolina to Frances Shumate Hall and Claude M. Hall.

Mrs. Hall-Cashion graduated from Wilkes Central High School and attended Brevard College. She was a member of North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church. She was Secretary-Treasurer and part owner of Tar Heel Oil, Colonial Distributors, Mountain Oil, and Hall Petroleum until the sale of these companies in 2008. She continued to work with Tar Heel Oil until her retirement in 2016. Brenda (better known as Mimi to her grandchildren) had lots of love for her family and her many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving are her husband, Neil G. Cashion, Jr; and children - Maria Elledge Nesselrotte; Brandon Hall Elledge and wife, Amy; and Cathy Cashion St. John and husband, Michael.

She is also survived by six grandchildren: Dylan Hall Nesselrotte, Brenna Elizabeth Nesselrotte, Brooks Hall Elledge, Barrett Claude Elledge, Katie Elizabeth St. John, and Lindsey Olivia St. John.

She is also survived by her brother, Ted M. Hall and wife, Jackie and her twin sister, Linda Hall Lankford and husband Gerald - all of North Wilkesboro.

A memorial service was January 4,  at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church with Dr. Rob Evans and Rev. R.C. Griffin officiating.  

A private entombment was at Scenic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

 Howard Triplett, 83

Mr. Howard "Trip" Baker Triplett, age 83, formerly of Wilkes County passed away Monday, December 30, 2019 in Melbourne, FL.  

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, January 12, 2020 at Lewis Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Dwayne Andrews and Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM prior to the service at the church.

Howard was born April 10, 1936 in Wilkes County to Grace Baker and James Ruffin Triplett, Jr. He retired from Lowe's Home Improvement and was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and studied at Appalachian State University.  He was a member of Mount Pleasant Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and was a Shriner for many years. He was also in the North Carolina National Guard.  He was instrumental in establishing The Champion Fire Department in 1973 and was the fire chief at Champion from 1976 until 1980. In recent years he served on the Board of Directors.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years; Hazel Sue Triplett and a sister; Mary Francis Triplett.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years; Janette New-Triplett of Melbourne, FL, two daughters; Melissa Triplett Berger and husband Bruce of Auburn, AL, Jennifer Triplett Hollar and husband Craig of Wilkesboro, step-son; Charles New and wife Kathleen of Orlando, FL, step-daughter; Elaine New of Melbourne, FL, eleven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and two brothers; Jimmy and Franklin Triplett of Wilkesboro and many nieces and nephews.

 Doris Huggins, 86

Doris Walsh Huggins, 86 of Ferguson, gloriously entered her heavenly home after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease on Monday, December 30, 2019. Doris was born May 18, 1933 in Ferguson, North Carolina. She was a member of Elk Baptist Church and a former member of First Baptist Church of Apopka, Florida.  Doris was a life-long learner of the Bible and enjoyed sharing her faith with others. Doris graduated from Appalachian State University in 1956 with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught in North Carolina, California and Florida. She retired from Orange County Public Schools having taught thirty-four years at Dream lake Elementary. Doris instilled character and respect by reading the Bible to her students daily.  She loved being an educator and helping children to learn and grow. Doris was a devoted wife to Bill Huggins, a wonderful mother of two sons, and a loving sister to three siblings.

Doris is survived by her two sons; Morris Wayne Huggins of Ferguson, and Marshall Huggins and wife Karen of Orlando, Florida, four grandchildren; Jeremy Huggins, Josh Huggins, Autumn Huggins and Henry Huggins; a great granddaughter, Cloey Huggins, a sister, Phyllis Page; two brothers; George T. (Champ) Walsh and wife Louise, and Floyd E. Walsh and wife Wanda.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband William L. (Bill) Huggins, her father Sidney M. Walsh, and her mother Faye T. Walsh.

A celebration of life was January 4, 2020 at Rock Spring Baptist Church in Darby, NC.  The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 2 PM, with the celebration of life to begin at 3 PM.  The family is requesting in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Parkinson's Foundation, The MSA Coalition, and Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.  

The family would like to express their appreciation to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative care and their gratitude to Patty Howell, Eileen Cabrera, and Barbie Paisley for the outstanding care they provided.

Mr. David Earl Dancy, Jr. age 32 of Hays, passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2019 at Atrium Health Care in Charlotte in the arms of his fiancé; Melanie Boll and his grandmother; Doris Dancy with his best friend; John Johnson by his side.

Funeral services were January 2, at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jason Seth Whitley officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Dancy was born March 20, 1987 in Iredell County to David Earl Dancy, Sr. and Marisa Beshears Dancy. He worked for Lowes Consolidated. David attended North Wilkes High School and Wilkes Community College.

He was preceded in death by his father; David Earl Dancy, Sr. and his grandfather; Clyde Dancy.

Mr. Dancy is survived by his fiancé; Melanie Boll, his grandmother; Doris Dancy and his mother; Marisa Beshears Dancy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Donor's Choice. The family requests no food.

 Myrna Mishler, 66

Mrs. Myrna Margaret Tidey Mishler, 66, entered her heavenly home on December 18, 2019.  Her life longtime faith in Christ gave her peace in her passing after her short battle with cancer.  As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, she will be deeply missed.

Myrna was born on January 8, 1953 in Cadillac, Mi to her parents, Fredrick H and Margaret (Crouse) Tidey. She was the second of the "Tidey girls" and was raised by her loving grandparents, Yale and Sara Tidey. Myrna attended Manton Consolidated Schools and graduated in 1971.

Myrna dedicated her life to Jesus and was a faithful servant. She was a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church in Moravian Falls. She loved to serve by playing the piano, singing in the choir, working bus ministries, teaching children and most of all making special gifts for all her "grandchildren" and friends. The family would like to thank Pruitt Health Hospice for there care.

Myrna is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, Yale and Sara Tidey and Kenneth and Evelyn Crouse; brothers, Fredrick S. Tidey, Tim Tidey.

Myrna is survived by her loving husband James "Jim" of 48 years; son, Jim (Erin Lund) of South Haven, MI; daughter, Kimberly (Cecil) Morris of Prospect, NY; sisters, Sara (David) Ward of Boon Mi, Deb (Jim) Englund of Twin Lakes, MI, Laurie (Kirk) Gostlin of Evart, MI; step siblings, Terri Ann Wiltse, Sandy Collings, Paul Davis; grandchildren, Paige (Ryan) Crego, Ben Mishler, Jacob Mishler, Emily Morris, Andrew Morris, Jaxon Morris, Danny Morris, Alayna Morris; great grandson, Caleb Crego and many aunts, uncle, nieces and nephews.

Cancer may have won the battle of her earthly body, but God won the war by securing her eternity.

The family will hold a memorial service will be held at Cherry Grove Baptist Church on January 8, 2020 at 7 pm and at Boon Baptist Church in Boon, MI in February at a later date.
