— HOLIDAY MARKET WEEK AND TREE LIGHTING.
Considered the busiest week of the year, most of Providence Peak’s residents spend the entire year waiting for it. A time when sparkling lights are strung up and down the streets of downtown and shop windows are decorated with all kinds of seasonal displays. The skating rink in the middle of the downtown square has been iced over and open for the season, the tree lighting ceremony just on the horizon, and the Hot Cocoa Stop is making it’s rounds through the neighborhoods. It’s holiday market week in Providence Peak and the city has an entire week filled to the brim with events to celebrate the warmth of the season.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
All Week (December 17th - December 23rd) - All week long, the residents of the city can find the holiday market in it’s usual downtown location, lining the glowing streets leading up to the large tree in the center of the city. The market will feature a variety of vendors (local shops listed on locations will likely have a booth set up at this event) and the large ice skating rink in the center, with Hot Cocoa Stop serving a variety of warm cocoas nearby.
NEW TO THE MARKET: a now-permanent annual holiday market fixture of Holidays Around the World which creates a magnicifant entryway into the streets of the festival and features vendors selling food and drinks that are common parts of holidays that take part int he winter season all around the world!
Sunday (December 17th) - Join Mayor-Once-More Ava Harris in the town square for the annually tree lighting that signals the start (of crunch time) for the holiday season. The event will begin with a speech from the lovely mayor, who will be joined by her family, and will conclude with the ribbon cutting that will begin holiday market week!
Monday (December 18th) - Sunrise yoga with... the Grinch? Well, let's at least hope he puts on pants for this festive, once-in-a-lifetime (seriously, once is all you'll need to experience it) event hosted by The Humming Bee. Relax and stretch at your leisure with a soundtrack of hilariously honest comments from the green man himself. While you're taking a break, feel free to snack on themed drinks and small bites offered by Main Squeeze. Be on the lookout for a special, furry appearance from the man's best friend during your session!
Tuesday (December 19th) - Treat yourself to a break from the chill of winter with a festive movie at Cinematic. Go with a classic family tale like How the Grinch Stole Christmas or venture into the world of comedy and holiday spirit with Elf. One your way in, be sure to grab one of the theaters many holiday treats including; sugar plum popcorn, peppermint hot chocolate, and holiday sugar cookies that are sure to make even the jolly old man drool.
Wednesday (December 20th) - If you find yourself craving more of the chilly season, find your way to Spruce Mountain Ski Lodge and Resort in Bighorn Hills for individual or family fun alike. The lodge will be opening a portion of their hills for free sledding and snowtubing only and, if that's not enough snow for one night, venture down the hill to participate in their Snowman Building Contest, where first prize will gift the winner with a 3-night all-inclusive stay at the resort! Feeling enough of the chill? Visit the large s'mores and hot chocolate station nearby to warm up and satisfy even the best sweet tooth.
Thursday (December 21st) - Painting with FRIENDS is always a good way to sit back and unwind during the holiday season, but when the Holiday Armadillo makes an appearence? You really can't miss this one. Join Refined Palette for a themed painting session in an atmosphere that would rival even that of the infamous Central Perk as you wine and design your very own holiday trifle in a funfilled and festive holiday activity! (Did we mention the unlimited coffee and seasonal... spirits that will be flowing well into the evening?)
Friday (December 22nd) - A holiday charity event, hosted by Providence Peak Memorial, that is sure to be like no other. Join the spokesperson of the night, Chief of Surgery Dr. Helen Briggs, in a truly dazzling dining space in Peak Seasons where attendees will be served an elegant four course meal made with locally grown and in-season products and seasonal drink pairings to match. In addition to the cost of the entry ticket, there will be an auction of donated experiences which will go toward the charity represented for the night. Don your best apparel for a date night with someone you adore, join friends as a night out on the town, or come just as you are.
Saturday (December 23rd) - Skyline Shopping Center presents it's BIGGEST. SALE. EVER. No, really. It's big. It's humungous. And it's just going to be really difficult to miss! Hop on down to finish your last minute holiday shopping and get your outfits ready to ring in the New Year with up to 70% off of most merchandise in stores! Those who spend over $200 during their shopping trip will be able to redeem a free coffee and meal in the food court.
EVENT DETAILS
This event will be kicking off Sunday, December 17th at 5pm EST. It will run until Saturday, December 30th at 12pm EST. No new starters should be posted after this time, but members may take the next few days to wrap up their threads.
This event is option and previous threads may continue. Participation is recommended, however not required.

Photographer Annie Leibovitz, famous for her iconic portraits of famous celebrities, came under fire for her August 2020 Vogue covershoot* featuring Simone Biles, the most decorated American gymnast with 30 Olympic and World Championship medals to her name.
Many critics expressed frustration over the poor lighting and styling in the photos, which left Biles’ dark skin looking flat, washed out, and muted (Biles’ actual skin tone is a rich warm color).
This highlighted a common problem found across the industry: - professional photographers often fail to properly light and photograph darker skin tones - photo editors often distort the tone or shade of darker skin as is often seen in whitewashing controversies about the misrepresentation of non-white subjects in magazines and advertisements.
Their shortcomings display a clear inexperience and can further highlight the lack of diversity of the subjects of the images as well as a lack of diversity behind the camera (another common complaint) which leads to less informed and experienced feedback.
The creation of color film, in fact, was originally built for white skin. The chemicals coating the film simply weren’t adequate to capture a diversity of darker skin tones. Photo labs established in the 1940s and 50s even used an image of a white woman, called a Shirley card, as a reference to calibrate the colors for printing and what was considered a “normal” standard skin tone.
During this time, the skin tones of Black, Asian, or Hispanic families didn’t receive the same consideration or justice from photo labs. The darker the skin, the more invisible the subject looked. In mixed-race photographs, a black person could even be rendered essentially invisible next to a white person except for the whites of their eyes and teeth.
Though they received many complaints from individuals, it wasn’t until the 1970s, when Kodak, a giant in the industry, started to be pressured by companies advertising wood furniture - who complained that the difference between dark-grained wood and light-grained wood could not be rendered - and chocolate makers - who complained that the difference between milk and dark chocolate could not be accurately rendered - that things actually began to change. Earl Kage, Kodak’s former manager of research and the head of Color Photo Studios, admitted, “It was never black flesh that was addressed as a serious problem at the time.”
The 1980s invention of their Kodak Gold Max film, however, was not-so-subtly marketed to the masses as being able to “capture a dark horse in low-light.”
In 1995 (60 years after the creation of their color film), Kodak finally introduced a new multi-racial reference card that featured a Caucasian, Asian, and African woman (it would later also add a Latina model) in an attempt to help camera operators calibrate skin tones more accurately. However, these reference cards were not adopted by everyone since they coincided with the rise of digital photography. The result was film technology that still carried over the social bias of earlier photographic conventions.
Digital photography today has made the Shirley-type reference card obsolete. There are now dual skin-tone color-balancing capabilities and also an image-stabilization feature that reduces the need for a flash.
Technology, however, isn’t without its faults. If the light source is artificial, digital technology will still struggle with darker skin.
The same goes for motion technology, like automated sinks and sensors that don’t identify the presence of a darker-skinned person. Even in the present day, technology can struggle to identify darker skin thanks to decades of the “white is normal” mindset when developing.
Researchers such as Joy Buolamwini of the MIT Media Lab have been advocating to correct the algorithmic bias that exists in digital imaging technology. You see it whenever dark skin is invisible to facial recognition software.
However, tools are only as good as the people who use them. The learned preference for lighter skin is ubiquitous in many parts of the world and that’s an infinitely tougher problem to manage than improving the color range of image technology.
Harvard University Professor Sarah Lewis writes, “For many, the question is still: Why does inclusive representation matter so much? The answers come through viral examples such as the image of a young 2-year-old Parker Curry gazing up at Michelle Obama’s portrait by Amy Sherald at the National Portrait Gallery, her mouth dropped open, convinced that Mrs. Obama was a queen. Former White House photographer Pete Souza has captured an image of a young boy, just 5 years old, who wanted to know if his hair texture really did match that of the president. You can’t become what you can’t accurately see.” *Vogue Online has since retouched the images slightly.

So, we all love Reese Witherspoon. I saw this book in the Cookbook section of the library and checked it out, though I’d say it’s more of a lifestyle book than a cookbook. It’s got some recipes in it but not many, and one of them is assembled from Cool Whip, a box of instant chocolate pudding, a chocolate cake and Oreos, which is just fine - I’m just telling you so you’re prewarned, if you too find this filed under Cookbooks.
She does, though, tell you other things of importance: be nice, dress pretty, monogram everything, wallpaper, hot rollers, How To Throw Different Kinds of Parties. Yes it’s mostly inane, but I love it. So 5 stars. Would I pay money for it? Not for myself, but Christmas is coming up and this would actually be a great gift. But bear in mind that I wallpapered a ‘feature wall’ in the kitchen in our last apartment, and I own the Lilly Pulitzer party book (and I have used it), so take from my recommendation what you will.
There’s a reading section with a list of books she recommends and book club ideas - this is probably the best part, along with the bit where she talks about buying things at flea markets. I get the impression she’s trying hard to be inclusive in the book and talks about amazing black women she knows from Vanderbilt, and includes vegetarians and people who do not drink in the party planning suggestions. She seems genuinely lovely and I sincerely believe she tries hard in real life too to be inclusive and intersectional, but this book does skew a little, for want of a better term, rich white folk.
It’s still a nice book to browse through. The pictures are lovely and it’s relaxing to flip through, it’s sort of like scrolling through the Draper James instagram. But a book. With more words. And you can’t click on the picture and buy the amazing wallpaper. It’s kind of useful (and I use the term loosely) if you like monograms and wallpaper and have the time/money to throw parties and browse flea markets for tchotchkes to decorate your home, but really, ultimately, it’s a book for your imaginary millionaire life, to help your adorn your giant fantasy house with pillars and a wraparound porch, and the amazing garden party (with trellis) that you’ll throw on your extensive, flowerbedded grounds.
There’s a part where Reese Witherspoon talks about her horses, but then there’s a part about Kentucky Derby Parties, which I kinda hold against the book. I dislike horse racing, I think it’s a little regressive, like greyhound racing or fox hunting. However I acknowledge that for many people it’s not necessarily the race itself but the party that revolves around it. It’s the kind of thing that’s deeply embedded in some cultures and we can hope that as people are more aware and gradually stop doing it, the celebration of horse racing will fall away.
I considered dropping my rating for the Kentucky Derby Party and the non-inclusiveness of the lifestyle she writes for, but I still enjoyed it despite the bougie whiteness (sorry) and Reese comes across as really nice in it. The RRP is kinda expensive but it’s the kinda thing that would be great as a Christmas gift for an in-law, for someone who holds many social events, or someone who really likes Reese Witherspoon - and if I see it in a thrift store or cheap second hand I might still buy it for myself to relax with.
