USAF announces support for Stratolaunch's hypersonic flight test

The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) announced its support for Stratolaunch's hypersonic test vehicle flight test, which is expected to take place early next year.

Launched from the Roc aircraft, the rocket-powered Talon-A test bench carries a variety of customizable loads flying above Mach 5, allowing a hypersonic flight environment for "scientific research, technological development and component demonstration".

The Seattle-based aerospace company completed the critical review of the test vehicle project in September 2021 and conducted its first captive flight test on October 28.

The flight of more than five hours at 23,000 feet (7,000 meters) tested the aircraft's release system and measured the "aerodynamic loads in the Talon-A vehicle while coupled to the Roc," the company said. "The loads captured in flight will validate aerodynamic forecasts to ensure that the release mechanism works as designed."

The first configuration of Talon-A is dispensable. However, the next generation will be reusable.

Stratolaunch expects to start providing hypersonic flight services to government and commercial customers in 2023.

“We are pleased that AFRL has chosen to support the flight of our first hypersonic vehicle and we enjoy working with the esteemed team,” said Stratolaunch CEO Zachary Krevor. "We look forward to providing flight test services to AFRL and other customers in the near future."

Chinese Private Space Company Completes Vertical Takeoff, Landing Test For Reusable Rocket

Chinese Private Aerospace Company LandSpace completed a vertical takeoff and vertical landing (VTVL) test on Friday, the Beijing-based firm told the Global Times, laying the foundations for its self-developed ZQ-3 reusable rocket.

The flight test was completed with the VTVL-1 test rocket at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Northwest China's Gansu Province. The rocket landed at the scheduled landing point after staying in the air for approximately 60 seconds and reaching 320 meters high.

VTVL-1 is a liquid oxygen, methane-propelled single-stage test rocket designed to develop the vertical takeoff and landing technique for LandSpace's ZQ-3 reusable rocket. The VTVL-1 has a total length of 18.3 meters and a diameter of 3.35 meters, with a launch weight of 50.3 tons and 68 tons of take-off thrust.

VTVL-1 is equipped with three sets of two-stage buffering landing legs that are capable of handling 50 tons of landing weight. The test also proved the performance and stability of the landing system, which will facilitate ZQ-3's takeoff and landing from land and sea.

The ZQ-3 carrier rocket is China's first reusable steel rocket. It was unveiled in December 2023, and is scheduled to conduct its first commercial flight in 2025. The first stage of the rocket can be used at least 20 times, reducing the launch cost by 80 to 90 percent compared to regular carrier rockets, according to LandSpace.

A representative from LandSpace told the Global Times that the test proved the matching performance of the rocket's control system and throttle engine as well as the guidance algorithm. "The later tests will involve greater speed and height, and will further facilitate the maiden launch of ZQ-3 in 2025," said the representative.

Multiple Chinese private aerospace firms have conducted VTVL tests. The Hyperbola-2 rocket from Chinese private aerospace firm iSpace completed its reusable flight test on December 10 2023.

CAS Space, a commercial spaceflight firm that is partly owned by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, revealed that it successfully carried out a launching-from-land and landing-at-sea trial in Haiyang, East China's Shandong Province, in April 2023.

China is investing hugely in the sector in the private space sector.

According to a recent report by Space Angels, China has gone from 0 to 3% of the world market within two years.

LinkSpace has built rocket prototypes with vertical flight and landing, to develop its reusable rocket technology.

In September 2017, the company had built three oscillating rockets, tested in Shandong Province. LinkSpace is also planning to become a transport services company, sending not only loads in orbit, or on suborbital routes but also creating a transport service from one point to another on the ground, imitating the SpaceX model for transporting passengers with suborbital rockets all over the world with the much more evolved next generation of BFRs.

OneSpace

OneSpace (零壹空间, Líng Yī Kōngjiān, literally “Zero One Space”) was the first Chinese company to launch an orbital launch on May 17, 2018, according to the Xinhua news agency. The startup has so far raised 74 million dollars in investments.

OneSpace is also based in Beijing and was founded with the support of the National Defense Science and Industry Bureau. OneSpace was founded by Shu Chang and aims to send microsatellites and nanosatellites. The first rocket started in 2018. By the end of the year, the company should present a new rocket line.

iSpace (星际荣耀, xīngjì róngyào, literally “Interstellar Glory”) performed two suborbital throws in April and August with the Hyperbola-1S rocket. On 5 September, the company managed to launch 3 small CubeSat satellites in orbit which were then parachuted to earth. iSpace is located in Beijing.

LandSpace (蓝箭, Lán Jiàn, literally “Blue Arrow”) seems to be the most promising company. Among all the Chinese ones, it is the one that seems to have the most advanced rockets. The startup is also trying to produce a liquid engine, following the model developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin. LandSpace is expected to launch its first launch in November 2018. LandSpace is headquartered in Beijing and was founded in 2015 by Tsinghua University.

In January 2017 it was the first private Chinese company in the sector to sign a launch contract with a foreign client. Zhuque-1 is the company’s first rocket and should make its maiden flight by the end of the year to transport a CCTV satellite into orbit and start at the Wenchuang launch station. The next generation of rockets (ZQ-2), should be powered by liquid oxygen and methane and should be able to transport up to 4 tons of cargo to 200 km from the earth, or 2 tons to 500 km. The rocket should be ready by 2020.

Girl Groups #2

TWICE

TWICE is a 9 member girl group under JYP Entertainment. The group consists of Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung and Tzuyu. They debuted in 2015 with the song called “ Like OOH-AHH”.

TWICE was one of the first Korean girl group I ever got into. For almost 4 years they were doing cute concepts which I usually hate, but when I listened to their songs I felt so energized and I really fell in love with the cuteness. Since 2019, they are doing more mature concepts, but I still love them the same as I did before.

Red Velvet

Red Velvet is a 5 member girl group under SM Entertainment. The group currently consists of Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy and Yeri. They debuted in 2014 with the song called “Happiness”.

Red Velvet was the first-ever Korean girl group I got into. I first saw them at MAMA back in 2017 where they performed "Peek-A-Boo", which is still my favorite song of theirs.

Red Velvet debuted as a four-member group, but Yeri was added during their first comeback.

After their "Bad Boy" comeback in early 2018, I started to drift away from them but came back quickly when "Psycho" was released.

Unfortunately, one of the members, Wendy, had a very bad injury last December when she fell off from the stage. Her injuries included a pelvic fracture, a broken wrist, and a cracked cheekbone, all on the right side of her body. Ever since then RV didn't have a comeback, Irene and Seulgi debuted as a duo, Yeri has been modeling and Joy had acting jobs and was featured on some songs.

WJSN

WJSN (Cosmic Girls) is a 13 member girl group under Starship Entertainment. The group consists of Exy, Seola, Xuan Yi, Bona, Soobin, Luda, Dawon, Eunseo, Cheng Xiao, Mei Qi, Yeoreum, Dayoung and Yeonjung. They debuted in 2016 with two songs called “Mo Mo Mo” and ”Catch Me”.

I fell in love with WJSN because they have the most inspiring lyrics ever. Listening to their songs gives me courage and strength.

Since 2018 WJSN has been promoting as a 10 member group. The three Chinese members went back to China. Cheng Xiao was a mentor of a survival show and now she's acting, while Xuan Yi and Mei Qi joined a survival show, and were in a Chinese group for 2 years. As of now, it seems like unfortunately, they won't come back to the group.

PRISTIN

Pristin was a 10 member girl group under Pledis Entertainment. The group consisted of Nayoung, Roa, Yuha, Eunwoo, Rena, Kyulkyung, Yehana, Sungyeon, Xiyeon, and Kyla. They debuted in 2017 with the song called “WEE WOO”. They disbanded on May 24, 2019.

PRISTIN is the perfect example of when a company ruins a group's carrier. PRISTIN's 2017 debut was surrounded with high expectations. The group had two former IOI members, so everyone paid attention to them. They won every rookie of the year award, but their youngest member, Kyla was fat-shamed by Knetz so she went back to the US at the end of 2017. After that, Pledis debuted a sub-unit called Pristin V in May, 2018 but then forgot about them. Their disbandment was a big shock and heartbreak for me.

HINAPIA

HINAPIA was a 5 member girl group under OSR Entertainment. The group consisted of Minkyeung, Gyeongwon, Eunwoo, Yaebin and Bada. They debuted in 2019 with the song called “DRIP”. They disbanded on August 21, 2020.

I was very excited when I heard that four former PRISTIN members will debut together again under the name HINAPIA, plus one new member will also join them. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, their company went bankrupt so the girls didn't renew their contracts and the group disbanded 10 months after their debut.

Weki Meki

Weki Meki is an 8 member girl group under Fantagio. The group consists of Suyeon, Elly, Yoojung, Doyeon, Sei, Lua, Rina, and Lucy. They debuted in 2017 with the song called “I don't like your Girlfriend”.

Girls’ Generation

Tiffany, Sooyoung, and Seohyun left S.M. Entertainment on the 9th of October, 2017 but for now, their departure from SNSD wasn’t confirmed.

Protests, police and the use of force (NYT) Demonstrations continued across the United States on Sunday amid growing concern that aggressive law enforcement tactics intended to impose order were instead inflaming tensions. The pandemic is making people reconsider city living, trading traffic for chickens (Washington Post) For 49 years, Jinky Demarest de Rivera has lived and thrived in dense, vibrant cities. The nonprofit finance director grew up in Manhattan and for the past 16 years has made a home in Oakland, where they live with their wife, Sara Demarest de Rivera, and dog, Onyx. Now the family is packing everything up for a large house in New York’s rural Hudson River Valley with enough room for chickens. Grand Bazaar, cafes open and flights resume as Turkey eases up (Reuters) Flights and car travel resumed between Turkey’s big cities on Monday while cafes, restaurants and Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar reopened in the country’s biggest step to ease restrictions taken to contain the coronavirus pandemic. Traffic levels jumped in the commercial hub of Istanbul, with many Turks returning to work as the government sought to revive an economy hit hard by the pandemic. Employees of government offices and public facilities joined the many factory workers who restarted last month.

China and India Brawl at 14,000 Feet Along the Border (NYT) High in the Himalayas, an enormous fistfight erupted in early May between the soldiers of China and India. Brawls at 14,000 feet along their inhospitable and disputed frontier are not terribly unusual, but what happened next was. A few days later, Chinese troops confronted Indian soldiers again, this time at several other remote border points in the Himalayas, some more than 1,000 miles apart. Since then both armies have rushed in thousands of reinforcements. Indian analysts say that China has beefed up its forces with dump trucks, excavators, troop carriers, artillery and armored vehicles and that China is now occupying Indian territory. No shots have been fired, as the de facto border code dictates, but the soldiers have fought fiercely with rocks, wooden clubs and their hands in a handful of clashes. In one melee at the glacial lake Pangong Tso, several Indian troops were hurt badly enough that they had to be evacuated by helicopter, and Indian analysts said Chinese troops were injured as well. Gantz apologizes for the killing of Palestinian man (Foreign Policy) Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz has apologized after Israeli security forces shot and killed Iyad Halak, a Palestinian who was autistic, in Jerusalem’s Old City on Saturday. “We are really sorry about the incident in which Iyad Halak was shot to death and we share in the family’s grief,” Gantz said.
