327 goes into… just about everything: Part 1 Chevrolet Corvette C1, 1962. My earlier post about the Bizzarrini got me thinking about GM's small block 327ci V8 and the variety of cars that were powered by it. First up was the final iteration of the C1 Corvette, the new for '62 327ci V8 was enlarged version of the 283ci and came in 250hp single 4-barrel carburetor form, there were 300 and 340hp carburettor variants and a 360hp fuel injected version at the top of the range.

Lighter Than C1 Corvette
The second-generation ’63 Corvette improved on the C1 Corvette in many ways. It was roomer inside, despite a smaller footprint. It handled better. It was even lighter than the preceding Corvette, despite using more steel in its construction and running the same drivetrain. The C2 saved weight by having thinner fiberglass in its body panels.
Duntov Wanted a Mid-Engine Corvette
Tumblr media
If you’re familiar with the current eighth-generation Corvette, you’ll know it’s unique to it the preceding seven generations by dint of being the first to go mid-engine. It may have taken the Corvette over sixty years to finally get there, but mid-engine designs had been increasingly common, especially in racing cars by the early 1960s. Duntov, the man today known as the Father of the Corvette, had initially wanted the second-generation Corvette’s engine in the rear. The plans were for a very 911-esqe air-cooled flat-six to replace the V8 using the Corvair’s existing architecture. In the end, an ambitious move to a midship engine just wasn’t feasible financially for the Corvette and it would take decades before it finally happened.

Fiberfab Centurion, 1965. A kit-car replica of the Chevrolet XP-87 prototype is to be offered at auction in France at the end of the month. The fibreglass Centurion was created by Warren “Bud” Goodwin, the founder of Fiberfab and could be built onto a C1 Corvette chassis. However before series production of the fibreglass bodywork had begun Goodwin was jailed for the voluntary manslaughter of his wife whom he had caught in bed with one his mechanics. Whilst in jail Goodwin himself died of a heart attack. It is thought than less than 12 Centurion bodies were made and this is one of them. The car has been fully restored and is based on a 1958 Corvette, equipped with the 283hp 4.6-litre V8 engine with Rochester injection and a manual gearbox.
