headline round-up! here's some recent good news that crossed my feed:
Tumblr media
Vultures released in Cyprus (via AP News, Bird Life Cyprus, September 2022) Fifteen griffon vultures, hailing from Spain, were released into the wild following a several-month acclimatization period. These birds will help replenish the Cypriot population, which had fallen to a mere 8-10 birds.
Four species of vulture return to national park in Malawi (via Mongabay, July 2022) White-backed, Hooded, White-faced, and Lappet-faced vultures have been returning to Liwonde National Park after an absence of 20+ years. Their comeback may be due to the reintroduction of cheetahs -- and the carcasses they leave behind.

22 Scottish Wildcats born in conservation project (via Saving Wildcats, The National, September 2022) The kittens are planned to be released in the Scottish Highlands next year, as part of the efforts to save this critically endangered species.
Tumblr media
El Jefe lives (via Wildlands Network, Tuscon.com, August 2022) The jaguar dubbed El Jefe -- the only known jaguar in the US when he was first spotted in Arizona in 2011 -- has been off the radar for seven years. But remote camera photos from Sonora caught sight of a familiar cat in November 2021, and his identity has now been confirmed.
Creating corridors for jaguars in Mexico (via Mongabay, June 2022) "A group of biologists is working with communities to improve habitat for jaguars, pumas, jaguarundis, ocelots and margays in forested areas of Guerrero, in southern Mexico. Now they want to strengthen this conservation area so that the cats can thrive and so that communities can create sustainable development projects."

Good news?
Not so fast.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In early 2022, it was announced that only 12 Persian cheetahs, the last of the cheetahs to roam anywhere in all of Asia, survive in the wild. All of these Persian cheetahs live within the borders of Iran. (The Persian cheetah -- Acinonyx jubatus venaticus, or “Asiatic cheetah” -- is a unique subspecies of the cheetah.) In India, the same species/subspecies of Persian cheetahs have been extinct for nearly 70 years.
But on 17 September 2022, the federal Indian government reintroduced and released 8 cheetahs to Kuno, within India. However, these cheetahs are an African subspecies, flown in from Namibia. These African cheetahs are technically a non-native species.
Their release was also deliberately scheduled to coincide with the birthday of notorious ethnonationalist prime minister Narendra Modi, in what critics and many ecologists consider a nationalist publicity stunt or “vanity project”.
Hundreds of villagers have been relocated by the state/federal government to accommodate the project, and some of them, recognized by the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) program, say they have not received compensation.
Meanwhile, many ecologists also have doubts about the long-term viability of the cheetah reintroduction, which took place in a landscape that was originally studied for the purposes of accommodating the reintroduction of a different nearly-extinct big cat, the Asiatic lion.
Here’s some quick context about the rarity of the native Persian/Asiatic cheetah:

Coyote & Pronghorn details, Dec 2023, inks.
Full piece here.
Pronghorn are the fastest land animals in North America, and are thought to have evolved this speed to outrun an ancient extinct cheetah-like predator. Despite how I have drawn this one, they are not very good jumpers and often cannot pass fences which are passable for deer. Wildlife management groups recommend modifications to barbed wire fences so they can more easily crawl under without getting stuck.
Northern Bobwhite are very sensitive to habitat disruption and easy targets for many predators, so reintroduction efforts are challenging for them despite widespread logistical and financial support from hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. I have shown them flying past flowers of Engelmann's milkweed, another species that is very vulnerable to habitat destruction, and Indiangrass, one of the prairie plants whose seeds they eat.
Coyotes are among the few species which have enough cleverness, mobility, and flexibility in their food and shelter needs that they are able to survive in areas with little to no remaining natural habitat. They are able to live in prairies but are less reliant on them than many of their former neighbors.
Rainbow grasshoppers, which I have shown here heavily stylized on prickly pear cactus, have patterns of bright spots which serve to warn potential predators that they taste bad. They live almost exclusively in desert and shortgrass prairie (see Sideoats grama, a shortgrass, in the full sized piece). They don't do well in modified habitat like typical yards and parks, so most people have never seen one even if they live in the correct geographic area.

I lied, I am making one more post about the OceanGate discourse because I am tired of the dehumanization and jokes.
I decided to look into two of the people on board that sub because I knew nothing about them and everyone keeps saying its just a bunch of rich tourists who deserved to die.
Today we are going to talk about Hamish Harding and Paul-Henri Nargeolet. -------
Hamish Harding: What did he do during his life? Is he just some rich asshole? -In 2017, Harding worked with Antarctic VIP tourism company, White Desert, to introduce the first regular business jet service to the Antarctic using a Gulfstream G550, landing on Wolfs Fang Runway, an ice runway. Harding also visited the South Pole several times, accompanying Buzz Aldrin in 2016 as he became the oldest person to reach the South Pole (age 86) -In 2019, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, Harding, along with Terry Virts, led a team of aviators that took the Guinness World Record for a circumnavigation of the Earth via North and South Poles in a Gulfstream G650ER in 46 hours 40 minutes. The One More Orbit mission launched and landed at the Shuttle Landing Facility (Space Florida) at NASA Kennedy Space Center, US. Harding was the mission director and led a team of over 100. -In 2021, Harding and Victor Vescovo dived to the deepest point of the Mariana Trench, the Challenger Deep at a depth of 36,000 feet (11,000 m), in a two-person submarine, setting the records for greatest length covered and greatest time spent at full ocean depth. -In 2022, Harding's aviation company Action Aviation supplied a customized Boeing 747-400 aircraft to transport eight wild cheetahs from Namibia to India to launch the reintroduction of the cheetah to India project of the Indian Government and the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia (CCF). Cheetahs have been extinct in India since independence in 1947. This conservation project was designated a "flagged expedition" by the Explorers Club with club members Harding and Laurie Marker, founder of the CCF, carrying the flag on the flight to India.
------- Paul-Henri Nargeolet: What did he do during his life? Is he just some rich asshole?
-In the 1970s, he was appointed Commander of the Groupement de Plongeurs Démineurs de Cherbourg, whose mission was to find and neutralise underground mines. -In the 1980s, he was transferred to the Underwater Intervention Group (GISMER), where he piloted intervention submarines.  During this time, he travelled the world retrieving submerged French planes and helicopters, including the individuals and weapons upon them.  Through this work, he found an Roman wreck, located at a depth of 70 metres. He also located a DHC-5 Buffalo that crashed in 1979 with 12 people on board, including several members of the Mauritanian government. -Nargeolet piloted dives to the Titanic wreck site in 1987, 1993, 1994 and 1996.  His 1987 expedition was the first to collect artifacts from the wreckage. -In August 2007 RMS Titanic, Inc., owned by Premier Exhibitions, a company that organises travelling exhibitions, commissioned Nargeolet to locate RMS Carpathia, which had rescued survivors of RMS Titanic but was torpedoed in 1918. -Nargeolet worked with RMS Titanic, Inc. to recover artifacts related to the Titanic as the Director of the Underwater Research Program. His work has included utilizing remotely operated vehicles (ROV), as well as piloting dives to the wreck site. His work has resulted in recovering nearly 6,000 artifacts over the course of 35 dives. In 2010, he was part of a mission to 3D map the wreck site and determine levels of deterioration using ROVs and autonomous underwater robots. -In 2010, he participated in the search for the flight recorder of Air France Flight 447, which crashed the previous year while en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris
------- TLDR: They may be a couple of rich dudes, but they were more than that. They were actually qualified to be in such a vehicle with actual experience diving in real submarines and had reason to be there. They were not just some tourists. They did a lot more than any of you are ever going to do, but sure, lets dehumanize them and see them as just a bunch lazy rich people who deserve to die simply because they are rich.

India things!
Project Cheetah, India's ambitious attempt to introduce African cheetahs in the wild in the country, has been completed a year after its launch in September 2022.
The project has claimed to have achieved short-term success on four counts: “50% survival of introduced cheetahs from South Africa and Namibia, the establishment of home ranges, the birth of cubs in Kuno”, and revenue generation for local communities.
According to the Cheetah reintroduction project, Cheetahs, meant for a total of 142 months in the wild, spent less than 27 months combined.
The project faced a setback with a 40% loss in the functional adult population, resulting in the death of six out of 20 cheetahs, including Dhatri, Sasha, Suraj, Uday, Daksha, and Tejas.Additionally, four cubs were born in India, of which three died, and the fourth is being raised in captivity.
Only three cheetahs, namely Namibian imports Asha, Gaurav, and Shaurya, spent more than three months continuously in the wild. However, they have been confined to bomas(enclosures) since July 2023.
There are doubts about the successful establishment of "home ranges" in Kuno.

Second batch of 12 cheetahs from Africa arrive in India
A second group of 12 cheetahs from Africa on Saturday arrived in India as part of a reintroduction project. India’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (wildlife) J.S. Chauhan confirmed the felines were flown from South Africa to Gwalior, India before being transported to Kuno. “I am unaware of the number of male and female cheetahs in the batch of 12. The cheetahs will be kept under…

More Cheetah to grace India in the coming months
South Africa and India have signed an agreement that in the next 10 years, 12 cheetahs will be flown into India and this comes after last year’s translocation of eight cheetahs from Namibia. Both countries call the reintroduction of cheetahs in India an “ecological objective”. In the coming February month, the first batch of 12 […]

Very big happenings in Persian cheetah news in 2022:
In early 2022, it was announced that only 12 Persian cheetahs, the last of the cats to roam anywhere in all of Asia, survive in the wild. Despite conservation efforts, no Persian cheetahs have ever been bred or born in captivity. Until now, as, in spring 2022, 3 cubs, triplets, were born in captivity. But as of September 2022, only one survives. Meanwhile, in India, the same species/subspecies of Persian cheetahs have been extinct for nearly 70 years. But the federal Indian government is going to release cheetahs, an African subspecies, flown in from Namibia. The cheetahs will be released, apparently, on 17 September 2022, to coincide with the birthday of notorious prime minister Narendra Modi, in what critics and many ecologists consider a nationalist publicity stunt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mostly in the past 125-ish years, the cheetah has been eliminated from over 90% of its distribution range. With the exception of a population within Iran, the cheetah is now extinct all across Asia, where until recently it lived from the shores of the Mediterranean, Anatolia, Mesopotamia, and the Arabian peninsula through Central Asia, across India, and into Bangladesh.
Tumblr media
Not all cheetahs are the same of course.
The so-called “Asiatic cheetah” or “Persian cheetah” is the subspecies Acinonyx jubatus venaticus.
Here are the generally recognized subspecies:
Tumblr media
Less than 50 Persian cheetahs left alive.
And in early 2022, Iranian ecologists/conservationists announced that there are apparently only 12 Persian cheetah surviving in the wild. This is scary, since in 2010, there were an expected 100 wild Persian cheetahs alive.
Captive breeding programs for the Persian cheetah have never been successful. No Persian cheetahs have been born in captivity.
Until now.
3 cubs, triplets, were born in spring 2022:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But.
More bad news.
2 of the 3 cubs have so far died.
One cub remains.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile..
The nation-state of India will be reintroducing cheetahs for the first time since their extinction 70-ish years ago.
Tumblr media
However, citing low population numbers, Iran cannot/will not donate any of the appropriate native Persian cheetah subspecies.
So, India is instead transplanting/importing a non-native African cheetah subspecies.
Tumblr media
And there are other complications.
Like how hundreds of local villagers have been relocated to accommodate the newly-designated cheetah habitat zone. And how India already struggles to support local populations of leopards and the nearby similarly-critically-endangered final surviving population of the Asiatic lion (sub)species.
But there are also the political ramifications
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And critics say that ethnonationalist/fascist prime minister Narendra Modi is hijacking the cheetah reintroduction as a nationalist publicity stunt, as the cheetahs will be released on his birthday, 17 September 2022. (There are other ecology-based criticisms involving habitat integrity, prey species population viability, long-term habitat health, competition with leopards, and the nearby Gir forest Asiatic lions.)
Tumblr media
Much to think about.

BJP's Varun Gandhi Attacks Own Party Again
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mr Gandhi said India should focus on conserving its own endangered species. New Delhi: In yet another attack on his own party and the Centre, BJP MP Varun Gandhi has termed bringing cheetahs from Africa and allowing them to die "cruelty and negligence", and called for a focus on conserving India's endangered species. Mr Gandhi's remarks come in the backdrop of nine cheetah deaths in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park in a span of five months, and amid reports of the next batch of the big cats being brought from South Africa and introduced into the state's Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. As part of Project Cheetah, the first batch of the big cats, brought from Namibia, had been released in Kuno National Park by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday -  September 17 - last year. Sunday will be the first anniversary of Project Cheetah.  In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Gandhi tagged a report on the another batch of cheetahs and said, "Importing cheetahs from Africa and allowing nine of them to die in a foreign land is not just cruelty, it's an appalling display of negligence. We should focus on conserving our own endangered species and habitats rather than contributing to the suffering of these magnificent creatures." Importing cheetahs from Africa and allowing nine of them to die in a foreign land is not just cruelty, it's an appalling display of negligence. We should focus on conserving our own endangered species and habitats rather than contributing to the suffering of these magnificent… https://t.co/atB0hFE8wC — Varun Gandhi (@varungandhi80) September 16, 2023   "This reckless pursuit of exotic animals must end immediately, and we should prioritise the welfare of our native wildlife instead," his post said.  This is far from the first time that the MP from Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit has attacked his own party or a government headed by the BJP. At an event in Uttar Pradesh last month, he had asked people not to disturb a sadhu (ascetic) and said nobody knows "when 'maharaaj ji' will become the chief minister". The ascetic's phone had started ringing, but Mr Gandhi had stopped BJP workers from asking him to switch it off.  "Please do not not stop him, never know when 'maharaaj ji' will become the chief minister. Then what will happen to us?" he had been quoted as saying by news agency PTI. The joke was seen as a dig at the government in Uttar Pradesh.   Kuno National Park has seen the reintroduction of 20 adult cheetahs since September last year, and four cubs have been born there since then. Nine of the cheetahs, including three cubs, had died in a span of five months till early August this year.  Some experts had attributed the cheetah deaths to the use of sub-standard radio collars, but the government had dismissed the charge as "speculation and hearsay without scientific evidence". Hearing a petition on the deaths, the Supreme Court had said last month that there was no reason to question the government on the moves being made to reintroduce cheetahs in India. In an interview with PTI, Project Cheetah head SP Yadav said that the next batch of cheetahs will be imported from South Africa and introduced in the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, which will be ready to welcome them by the end of the year.
