Listed at end of Caroline B. Sherman, “American Rural Fiction, 1937," with this description:
“Simple life in a remote community in North Carolina is described as it is lived against a mighty background of mountains and forest.”

Others in that list include Edwin Corle, Vardis Fisher, Caroline Gordon, Mari Sandoz, Wallace Stegner and John Steinbeck.
Caroline Baldwin Sherman (1881-1971) “began her career in the USDA as the librarian in the Office of Markets in 1915... [and] moved up through the ranks over the decades to become head of editorial and research functions in the Division of Economic Information...” (Helen Tangires, Movable Markets: Food Wholesaling in the Twentieth-Century City, 2019) : 144 : link
According to Commirre (1975), Mary Bledsoe was a cataloguer at the Library of Congress, 1921-22; it is at least conceivable that she and Caroline B. Sherman crossed paths in D.C..

A selection of words capturing my April pop culture experiences:

Amy Sherman-Palladino
Muppets
Vampire
Nike
American Girl dolls
Read on for everything that brought me joy this month!
April Crowd-Pleasers
1. Renfield (2023)
Did I write a review of Renfield, an ode to the two Nic(k)s, or analysis of the Great Resignation? Yes, yes, and yes. Read whatever, in fact, I wrote at ZekeFilm. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10
2. SNL Round Up
Whether they’re spoofing my childhood toys, my young adulthood wedding commitments, or my love for the Jonas Brothers, the crew in Studio 8H has been keeping me laughing this Spring.
“Southwest Airlines Announcement” (4811 with Michael B. Jordan)
“The Big Hollywood Quiz” (4812 with Pedro Pascal) - A great example of how no one watches the same things anymore
“Waking Up” (4812)
“Protective Mom” (4812)
“Lisa From Temecula” (4812)
“American Girl Café” (4814 with Travis Kelce)
“Bridesmaid Cult Documentary” (4816 with Quinta Brunson) - I feel seen
"Weekend Update: Co-Worker Who's Extremely Busy Doing Seemingly Nothing on Returning to the Office” (4817 with Molly Shannon) - I feel attacked
“Sally O'Malley: Jonas Brothers” (4817)
“American Girl Doll Movie Trailer” (4818 with Ana de Armas)
3. Descanso Gardens
Because I can’t resist a botanical garden! Gardens are becoming a go-to attraction for me on vacations, and the Descanso Gardens in Los Angeles did not disappoint. The day we went was not too crowded but was impressive enough to earn a huge crowd—a hidden gem for LA tourists!
4. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Panel at PaleyFest
The gardens were lovely, but there were two other attractions that were the real reason for my visit to Los Angeles. The first was PaleyFest to see Amy Sherman-Palladino, Daniel Palladino, and the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel! Just before the fifth and final season started on Amazon Prime, we heard Alex Borstein and Rachel Brosnahan share their mourning process for the show’s ending, Caroline Aaron and Michael Zegen reflect on what these roles have meant to them, and Tony Shalhoub crack up the crowd. (And who knew I would be so starstruck by him? When he came on stage I wanted to scream, “YOU WERE SO GOOD IN GALAXY QUEST!”) Check out SO IT’S A SHOW’s Instagram for more highlights from when my podcast co-host Kyla and I visited the Dolby Theatre (home of the Oscars!).
4. John Mulaney: Baby J (2023)
A full year ago I saw John Mulaney on his From Scratch tour, and now you can enjoy the set at home. His joke about not being interested in science “from magnets to ducks” did not make the cut (and alas now I can’t remember the setup for that punchline), but the other 90% of a show that made me laugh so hard I cried is preserved forever.
5. The Muppets. (2015-16)
Why did this gem only last 16 episodes? In this one-season single-cam sitcom, the Muppets are working on Late Night with Miss Piggy, a setting that could’ve produced comedy gold for years. With the frazzled Kermit producing, the Electric Mayhem as the in-studio band, and celebrity guests through the felt nose, I’m glad I checked out these 16 eps even though they ended on a cliffhanger. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like for Miss Piggy to date Josh Groban or to hold grudges against every blonde actress in Hollywood, you won’t want to miss it either.
7. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. (2023)
Special in the way that the best coming-of-age movies are. I suspect Margaret’s insecurities about boys, bras, and besties will feel relatable to Gens Z and Alpha if for no other reason than this movie’s depiction felt scarily accurate to my own experience in the mid-2000s. I promise I will never start a review with the story of my first period ever again! At least, probably—at the rate we're going, it will never be apropos again. Read the full review at ZekeFilm. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 9/10
April Critic Picks
1. AIR (2023)
Is it controversial to say Matt and Ben’s collabs only get better? If we're playing Greatest/Best/Favorite, this might be my new ranking:
Greatest: Good Will Hunting
Best: The Last Duel
Favorite: AIR
Read my full review for ZekeFilm. Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
2. The Academy Museum
The other reason I went out to Los Angeles: After years of pandemic-caused delays, I finally made it to the Academy Museum! Six floors of movie and Oscars history and memorabilia? You know I’m in my happy place, but casual movie fans will find something for them, too. Some of my favorite exhibits included the several-stories high Mount Rushmore backdrop used in North by Northwest, the gallery that used The Godfather to show each element of filmmaking, and the pianos from Casablanca. Fanny’s (named for Barbra Streisand’s character in Funny Girl) serves exceptional museum food, and I learned about deep cut filmmakers and movements I was only vaguely familiar with before I went. I’d give the Academy a gold statue for museum execution if I could!
3. Good Reads
A miscellaneous round up of good stuff I’ve read lately…
Final thoughts on 2022 Awards Season:
“How Avatar: The Way of Water Can Make $2 Billion and Still Feel Irrelevant,” Vox.com (2023)
“How Did We Let the Golden Globes Back In?” LATimes.com (2022)
Unexpected responses to Cocaine Bear:
“An Attempt to Define the ‘Good for Her’ Cinematic Universe,” Vulture.com (2023)
“The Case for Cocaine Bears,” Slate.com (2023)
Glitches in the Sports Industry Matrix:
“America’s Bad Bet on Expanding Legal Sports Gambling,” Vox.com (2023)
“Will Damar Hamlin’s Injury Change the NFL? Why a Safer Game Could Turn Away Fans,” LATimes.com (2023)
Watching trends that need to be fixed:
“Mumbling Actors, Bad Speakers or Lazy Listeners? Why Everyone is Watching TV With Subtitles On,” TheGuardian.com (2023)
“Television Is Going Exactly the Wrong Direction. I Know the Solution.” Slate.com (2023)
Explorations of our malaise at work:
“How to Care Less About Work,” TheAtlantic.com (2021)
“The Age of the Crisis of Work,” Harpers.org (2023)
All the ways—okay, just some of the way—social media is on the struggle bus right now:
“Why Every App Now Feels Like TikTok, but Worse,” NYMag.com (2023)
“How Elon Musk Turned the Blue Check Mark Into a Scarlet Letter,” Slate.com (2023)
“Commentary: If Twitter Finally Dies, Where Do We Find the Smart People?” LATimes.com (2023)
And even more miscellaneous good reads:
“You’ll Feel Better if You Go Outside,” NewYorker.com (2021)
“The Oral History of Helm’s Deep,” Inverse.com (2022)
“I’ve Had It With Stunt Ice Cream Flavors,” Eater.com (2023)
“Clothes Make the Con Man,” NYTimes.com (2023)
“Hailey Bieber, Selena Gomez, and the Easter Egg-ification of the Hollywood Feud,” Vox.com (2023)
“Why Are TV Writers So Miserable?” NewYorker.com (2023)
4. Current Exhibits at the St. Louis Art Museum
My membership to the SLAM always pays off. In April I indulged in two special exhibits:
The Age of Armor, which showcases the history of armor and battle gear with an emphasis on suits of armor. The galleries did a great job explaining how the armor functioned and provided model pieces to try yourself, but you know my favorite part was the Black Panther and Star Wars costumes at the end!
Monet/Mitchell: Painting the French Landscape compares the work of Claude Monet and American expat Joan Mitchell, and it brought me back to my magical trip to Giverny last summer!
5. The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939)
Sumptous costumes and sets, Bette Davis doing the most acting, and Errol Flynn at his handsomest. This Queen Elizabeth I costume drama from Michael Curtiz is maximalist in aesthetic and romantic at its heart. Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 9/10
6. Under the Umbrella: A Little Women Podcast (2023-)
Little Women superfans unite! Kate and Kelsey (friends and both teachers) are analyzing the book and film versions from every angle, and if you love the March sisters, Louisa May Alcott, or Greta Gerwig, they are going to be your new best friends.
7. Just Like Us: The Tabloids That Changed America (2022)
Last spring the Ringer Dish podcast did a deep dive into the ‘00s tabloids and their obsession with Brangelina, Bennifer, and ‘90s child stars gone wild—so basically everything I obsessed over in middle school. Bottom line: They probably didn’t make our world better, but those mags (and emerging online blogs and reality TV) sure tapped into parts of our brains that made them addictive. This eight-episode series challenges any assumption we have about about celebrity gossip being harmless—or frivolous.
Until May’s Round Up…

Examining the sources of the Plymouth Colony Pages [Part 31]
Manning Leonard, Memorial: Genealogical, Historical, and Biographical, of Solomon Leonard, 1637, of Duxbury and Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and Some of His Descendants (Auburn NY: Children of the Author, 1896).
This book mentions the Packards a good many times (12 times to be exact). These include the following:
"Sam'l Packard had Sam'l b. 1678 d. 1720, Thomas br. of the preceding had 8 wives. Deliverance d, of Sam'l Packard and Abigail d. Jacob Leonard— his will 1729"- p 43
"Nehemiah Leonard...son of Seth and Silence (Packard) Leonard, was b. in Bridgewater, Mass., Aug. 26, 1769 ; m. Jan. 5, 1792 Phebe Pratt. He resided in Bridgewater where he (L Mav 19, 1886 ; his wife d. Sept. 19, 1826"- p 194
Additionally, the Kingman family married often into the Packard family. So this book has more information on the Packard family than most.
Caroline Louisa Leonard Goodenough, Memoirs of the Leonard, Thompson, and Haskell Families ... (Yellow Springs, OH: The Author, 1928).
This book, written in 1928, can only be borrowed on the Internet Archive and is only available on HathiTrust through a limited search. While the book would likely need to be bought or looked at in a library, ancestry has a handy search. It shows 21 results for the name "Packard" within the book including description of Samuel Packard's farm, called "Nipenicket" or the "Old Packard farm" apparently. The former name could be because there is a lake in Bridgewater called "Nippenicket," interestingly enough. As Dale Cook puts it, "the [Packard] family lived at the western edge of the town of Bridgewater, at Lake Nippenicket, and sometimes whole families of children, especially on the fringes of a town, went unrecorded."
A. B. Lyons, G. W. A. Lyon and Eugene F. McPike, Lyon Memorial: Massachusetts Families, Including Descendants of the Immigrants William Lyon, of Roxbury, Peter Lyon, of Dorchester, George Lyon, of Dorchester (Detroit, MI: The Authors, 1905).
There are eleven matches for the last name of Packard in this book. They include descendants such as "Rufus E. Packard" (pps 117, 153) and Cornelia B. Packard (p 307),to name two of the many results in this book.
State copies of Massachusetts vital records registers 1841-1920 at the Massachusetts State Archives, 220 Morrissey Blvd., Boston, MA 02125.
This isn't necessary anymore because MA vital records can be easily searched on Family Search at the time.
Milton E. Terry and Anne Borden Harding, Mayflower Ancestral Index: Volume 1 (Plymouth: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1981).
This can still be found for the low price of $10.00. One website, which covers the genealogy of Mayflower passengers is as helpful as this index to be clear.
Susan E. Roser, Mayflower Births & Deaths from the Files of George Ernest Bowman at the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, 2 vols. (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1992).
The same goes for this book which was noted for the index above. It is not currently digitized online except in a search put up by Ancestry.com. The first volume reportedly has 16 results for the name "Packard."
Mayflower Descendant: A Quarterly Magazine of Pilgrim Genealogy and History (Boston: Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1899-1937, 1987 to present). Edited by George Ernest Bowman, v. 1 [1899] to v. 34 [1937]; Alicia Crane Williams, v. 35 [1985] to v. 48 [1998]; Scott Andrew Bartley, v. 49 [2000] to date.
Some editions of this magazine have been digitized on Internet Archive, but not many, only select ones. An individualized search of each book could reveal the name of Packard perhaps but that assumption may even been too much of a gamble.
Lucy Mary Kellogg, Mayflower Families Through Five Generations ... Volume One ... Francis Eaton, Samuel Fuller, William White (Plymouth: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1975, Addendum 1984). Robert M. Sherman, Mayflower Families Through Five Generations ... Volume Two ... James Chilton, Richard More, Thomas Rogers (Plymouth: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1978, Addendum 1986). John D. Austin, Mayflower Families Through Five Generations ... Volume Six ... Stephen Hopkins, 1st Ed. (Plymouth: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1992).
This book is out of print but varying later volumes are available online or even available through the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.
Robert S. Wakefield, Ralph Van Wood, Jr., et. al., Francis Cooke of the Mayflower and His Descendants for Four Generations, 2nd ed. (Plymouth: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1987).
This book is likely part of the above series.
Barbara Lambert Merrick and Alicia Crane Williams, Middleborough, Massachusetts Vital Records, 2 Vols. (Boston: Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1986-90).
These records are online but only seem available through a subscription to the New England Historic Genealogical Society.
Note: This was originally posted on Apr. 27, 2018 on the main Packed with Packards WordPress blog (it can also be found on the Wayback Machine here). My research is still ongoing, so some conclusions in this piece may change in the future.

CAST: Christiani Pitts (Ann Darrow), Eric William Morris (Carl Denham), Erik Lochtefeld (Lumpy)
NOTES: The full show, recorded from the rear orchestra on a phone. Most of the video is the August 10th recording but occasionally some promotional footage and the February 9th video are edited in to provide other views. The recording starts off with a lot of wandering, shakiness, and washout but gets better somewhat better as it goes on. Still not as good as an actual video filmed with a camera, but it exists. 1920x1080p, 4.29 GB.

NOTES: Fun show with a pertinent (but not obtrusive) message, Billy Porter is just amazing. This is somewhat more obstructed than other shows because the person in front was leaning forward and moving a lot, so there's a head in some of the scenes. Some shakiness and wandering in between, particularly at the beginning, but otherwise a good video with nice closeups. Complete show including curtain call. A-

NOTES: Another beautiful HD capture of the last performance in Chicago before Broadway, where it would go on to win the 2013 Tony. This performance has many changes from the other Chicago Dvd of the first performance. Includes the new song written towards the end of the Chicago run and many line changes. NOTES: This version was rewritten and abbreviated to fit within its 95-minute time slot. A little on the dark side, in black and white with a slight blue tinge, has producer’s counter numbers hard-coded on the screen in the upper third. This version of the show was produced for the launch of a new station in the UK. After months of preparing the launch of the new television station—with it’s brand-new 625 line resolution (until then UK TV’s had a resolution of 405 lines)—the night turned out to be a disaster. 50 minutes before the launch, a fire broke out at a local power station, cutting power to most of London but not the television station. They started the evening’s news show which was to be followed by this broadcast, but it soon became clear that there was no audience, and after a few minutes, the schedule was abandoned. The production was instead shown the next day. The date that’s superimposed on the video is April 20, 1964—the originally scheduled night. It is unclear if this is a fi

Did you know? - Gilmore Girls FAQs, trivia and curiosites
I’ve watched this show so many times, I stopped counting years ago when I reached double digits. Is my favorite show of all times and I’ve been told almost nobody knows it as well as I do, so I decided to put together all the knowledge I’ve gained over the years of trivia tidbits, although in that I’m nowhere near an expert ;) my deal is knowing these characters and their personalities and the lines of the show lol but I figured I’d give it a try and collect all the trivia and tidbits of knowledge I’ve gained over the years in one post that I’ll continue to edit to add more stuff (there are a couple that I didn’t get a chance to add right not that will add later on)
1. Yes, that’s Kirk in guardians of the galaxy 2 http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0348231/. And yes Sam Smith (depending on the photo) does look like Kirk (Sean Gunn). Sean Gunn also played the movements of Rocket the racoon.
2. And yes that is Jess dad's girlfriend Sasha now as April's mom (yes she was/is in Twin Peaks http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000145/). Amy wanted to work with Sherilyn and rumor has it she was offered the role for Lorelai first but there’s no article yet to be found stating this directly from the Palladinos mouths.
3. And yes cousin Marilyn and Gran, Lorelai the first, Richard’s mother, are the same actress. (Happy Day’s Mrs Cunningham http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005385/?ref_=nv_sr_1).
3. Yes the girl in SH high unnamed who asks Lorelai a question and Logan’s LBD friend Juliette are the same actress. Different character. Riki Lindhome played the unnamed student of SH high and Juliette
5. Yes the first episode looks completely different (not just in the diner) because it was filmed in a different location (Ontario, Canada).
6. Yes, that’s Luke in Seinfeld. (”sponge worthy guy”) and in Will & Grace, jerk guy obsessed with huge boobs, Grace wanted to impress with the water bra. Lauren was also in Seinfield as one of Jerry’s brief girlfriends. That’s also a young Lauren in Caroline in the city.
7. That’s Chris in friends (hums when he pees guy). Yes that's both Luke and Chris on Will & Grace (Luke water bra artist narcissistic guy, Chris cabin in the woods hot guy).
8. Yes that is Logan (and with Usher for that matter lol) in that scene at 7th heaven . And yes Logan. Matt Czuchry was in the good wife, and he has his own show now “The Resident” on Fox. Currently filming a second season (as in October 1st, 2018)
9. Yes Crazy Carrie was also the Stars Hollow High teacher (by a different name) in the pilot. Same actress that plays crazy Carrie but different name of character
10. No, nobody knows if the show will ever come back (as far as it’s been told everything points to a NO). The Palladinos don’t double book, they are happy doing Mrs Maisel and they devote themselves to one show at the time. The last interview they gave on the subject was to Michael Ausiello in the podcast you can hear in the links. 1. A direct link to the article from November 2017 but is important to listen to the podcast http://tvline.com/2017/11/27/amy-sherman-palladino-podcast-interview-gilmore-girls-mrs-maisel/ 2. This is a link directly to the podcast that opens right up and they say "it would have to be the right time , we don't know but we're open. We said no before and ended up doing more that's why we're open now but it would have to be in a different format", Daniel doesn't repeat the would have to because he already said it right before in the same sentence. Basically is nothing we didn't know. However is a very interesting podcast http://hwcdn.libsyn.com/p/b/8/1/b810a8eea76b5eb5/Amy_and_Dan.mp3?c_id=17932724&expiration=1526427435&hwt=95629606ee9caf86bc57bb8d2d70cf6a. Amy and Dan Palladino show creators and writers and producers, these are the people who made this universe, these are the people who the show belongs to, this is THEIR baby and they made a damn good one.
11. No, Lauren Graham did not have cancer and write a book about it. (different person, same name).
12. No, Lauren and Scott didn't hate each other's guts they just weren't BFFs. They have both said this endlessly, they have respect for each other. Scott had a crush on Lauren when he begun the show. But from what has been told and learned about Scott, it seems he doesn’t like to get along with the rest of the cast unless is for his personal gain.
13. NO Rory is not a surrogate. They never even discussed the surrogacy Lorelai with Rory neither did Paris with Rory and Gilmore Girls is a light dramedy not a soap opera it doesn’t have sudden hidden scenes that come to change the show completely, other shows, soap operas could do that, Gilmore Girls DOES NOT. She is NOT pregnant of the Wookie. She never slept with Paul (the actor even said it wasn’t Paul’s) Milo said Jess is not the father and doesn’t romantically love Rory anymore. Only Alexis and Matt were told who the father of the baby is. The Palladinos have said clearly that the father of Rory’s baby was never meant to be a mystery. The only person that fits is Logan. The only actors they have told are Alexis and Matt and told them they could do what they wanted with the information but they have chosen not to say anything because is Amy’s story. And the Palladinos have said IT IS THE OBVIOUS CHOICE. So, Logan is the father, is no cliffhanger is open ending. Yes it would be lovely to see more of them but the Palladinos don’t have the style of wrapping up things in a big pink bow.
14. Ace is Logan’s term of endearment for Rory, it shows respect and admiration, it comes from what they used to call top reporters in the 50’s movies, he first calls her that in a IM conversation at the Yale daily news in the episode season 5 episode 6 of Norman Mailer, I’m pregnant!. Not in the poker game, not in the LDB first gathering. Is a term of respect for her abilities investigating the Life and Death Brigade.
15. The love rocket. Rory understood the meaning because it was the same model, came from an episode of the Twilight zone that was Logan’s favorite. It didn’t need confirmation from Logan because Rory had already said she understood it and she explained it to Lorelai in the same episode: “When Logan and I were first going out, we were in the pool house one night really late, and we were falling asleep on the couch. And this episode of "the twilight zone" came on -- "the long morrow." There's this astronaut who was supposed to go into space for 40 years, but right before he left, he met this beautiful woman. But for those 40 years that he was going to be in space, he was going to be in suspended animation. So when he came back to earth, he was going to be really young, but she would be really old. So he goes into space, and when he does come back, the woman is still young and beautiful because she put herself in suspended animation to wait for him, but he's really, really old because he took himself out of suspended animation so he could be old with her. He spent 40 years alone in space just waiting to see her, and he was willing to come back as an 80-year-old man, giving up almost his entire life just to spend those last few years with her. The point is, that this is Logan's favorite episode of "the twilight zone." And when we watched it together, he said, "that's true love." That's true love! This is the most romantic gift I've ever been given.”.
16. Chris wasn’t at Rory’s high school graduation. He was however at her college graduation. The reason they give is he had to work. Probably the actor who was a guest star was doing another project and couldn’t be in the episode or they just didn’t want to write him in so they could develop more the arc between Lorelai and Luke.
17. June 3rd is the date of Rory’s court date AND the date chosen by Lorelai for hers and Luke’s wedding in the original show. Is the same date different year, coincidence as Lorelai herself says the date happened to happen. There’s a theory that is ASP’s best friend Helen Pai’s birthday. Since it was in an old interview we haven’t found the confirmation of it yet becaue there’s no data (at least on the searches we’ve done so far by various people) on Helen Pai’s date of birth.
18. Lane’s story is loosely based on Helen Pai’s, executive producer of the show and Amy Sherman Palladino’s best friend. HEP ALIEN is an anagram of her name (Pai’s name). Helen Pai’s husband is real life Dave Rygalski which was the character of Dave initially based on until the actor had to leave for a better offer.
19. The real life Dave Rygalski shows up in the troubadour’s “attack” episode, he was with Daniel Palladino who was singing a beaver ate my thumb Dan is singing and Dave is playing the bass. Daniel Palladino is also the town loner, the one who protests at the church and appears briefly in the pilot episode leaving Luke’s. In total Dan Palladino shows up three times in the show
20. Keiko Agena and Emily Kuroda are Japanese American that’s why when they speak korean in very few moments in the show is very difficult to understand for people who do understand korean. Also Mrs Kim’s real name, at least Korean’s name is Jong Ya. Lane’s is Hyun Kyung, without last names, which come first in Korean Culture so Lane would be Kim Hyun Kyung, Mrs Kim however would not be Kim as last name, that’s a westerner tradition, in Korea women don’t change their last name when they marry and they are referred as Madam, Auntie, or as mother of such (name of youngest child) depending on level of familiarity. There’s never a mention of Mrs Kim’s “westerner” first name.
21. There’s also no idea of what Lane’s father does or where he is during the original show. Amy Sherman Palladino show creator said she never saw the need to create or cast a Mr Kim because it was more to focus in the mother and daughter dinamics. No is not the unnamed Asian waiter at Luke’s. Mr Kim appears in the revival for a brief moment, never before. There’s a fan theory going around that he was never there because he had to constantly be traveling to supply antiques for the store. Lane mentions “my parents”, “my mother and father” in a handful of ocassions through the show. He WAS NOT the unnamed Asian waiter that is always at the background at Luke’s. The Palladinos had never made anyone pass for Mr Kim not even as the back of a head until the revival as a way of fan service and as a joke like saying “oh look, so maybe he had been there the entire time”.
22. The translation of the korean wedding ceremony is here: https://missallycat.tumblr.com/post/173812878159/i-got-a-sidekick-out-of-you (is a tumblr post) complete with before and after.
23. What does Lane’s grandmother say when she arrives at the house before the wedding? Grandma takes her coat and she sees Lane, she calls out her name Hyun Kyung-a (the a is an added sound they use for familiarity when they call someone's name) and tells her to come down. After Lane comes down she pats her in the cheek and says Lane is "oh so pretty!". Lane replies, "welcome, grandmother, I am very happy you came." The grandmother then says, "it's good to have come / I'm glad I came." She then talks to Mrs Kim (Yong Ja-ya Jong Ya is the name the ya the added familiarity informal sound), asking why is that Budha statue here in the room?. Mrs Kim says I was going to move it, mother (formal). Grandma walks through the house she's saying, "ugh, it's so dirty and stuffy in here - open a door." Then Mrs Kim says something that sounds sort of like, "rest first, please." When the camera cuts to Lane and Rory giving each other 'the look,' Grammy Kim is saying, "hey, why didn't you come out to the airport?" Mrs Kim maybe replies, "you said yesterday... that I shouldn't..." (and the sentence doesn't finish). Grammy Kim then says, "the atmosphere/karma is bad [in here]. It needs to be changed. Let's bow 108 times."
24. The episode of Jess in California “Here comes the son” WAS the backdoor pilot episode of what was going to be made into a spin off. But it wasn’t deemed interesting enough by the network to justify the expenses of shooting in the actual locations so it didn’t happen.
25. Miss Celine and Drella the harpist are the same actress. Alex Borstein. She was going to be Sookie, she was in the unaired pilot but due to conflicts with her other show she couldn’t be so she came later as other characters. She was also the voice in Dwight’s answering machine (especially my trivial pursuit!) and the woman’s voice in the museum. Jackson was married to her but they are divorced know.
26. Paris (Liza Weill) initially auditioned for the role of Rory, she didn’t get it but they liked her so much they created Paris for her.
27. Luke was initially going to be a woman but they figured the show needed more testosterone so they casted Scott. This has been the first and only major role Scott Patterson has had in his entire “career” as an actor, the one that led him to get a few more minor roles, rumor has it, he’s very difficult to work with and not talented enought to be worth the pain. He milks Gilmore Girls every chance he gets.
28. Sookie was going to be gay but the network put a stop to that, they didn’t want any openly gay characters in the show. The Palladinos were new at this so they accepted the network’s conditions. Is probably why Michel was always put as bicurious or closeted gay man during the original show and was only fully out in the revival as an obvious thing that needed no explanation or backstory because everyone always assumed Michel was gay.
29. Kirk (Sean Gunn) was initially just an appearance, Mick in the pilot episode, then swan guy, then Kirk new manager at Doose’s new in town who didn’t know Miss Patty or anyone and then became the Kirk Gleason we know and love. Sean Gunn was initially an extra but they loved him so much they created Kirk Gleason as permanent character for him.
30. Gypsy and Berta, the maid in AYITL are both played by the extremely talented, Rose Abdoo. She was hilarious in a reading when they hadn’t casted anyone yet so she was given the part. Her language is “berta-ese” lol She speaks mostly Spanish, a couple of words could be Brazilian portuguese (maybe?), is mostly nonsensical Spanish words in the kind of Spanish that wouldn’t make a sentence with any meaning or sense and Rose Abdoo said she had changed a few vowels of the words to make it more confusing.G
31. The unkown town elder (towel guy) is played by William Morgan Sheppard. He was never in the show before or after.
32. None of the elders were the same actors or characters of Richard’s two friends in the golf outing with Rory. But one of those friends was the reverend that buries gran, and in the revival is Charlie of the gazette.
33. Rory’s resident advisor Tess the girl who hands her the keys on her first day of Yale (SE04 EP2 “The Lorelais first day at Yale”) is a different actress than Sandee from Sandee says in AYTIL (a year in the life, netflix GG revival) Tess name is Joy Darash http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1384632/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t17 Sandee is Julia Goldani Telles http://www.imdb.com/name/nm5065920/?ref_=tt_cl_t3 (if you ever saw ASP’s show bunheads that’s Sasha)
34. When they take the roadtrip to Harvard. The picture of the girl Lorelai stares at when she’s in the hallway is a stranger it has to do with the year not the girl herself. That's the year she would have graduated if she went to an Ivy league college as it was planned. It was sort of a “what if” moment.
35. Emily Gilmore didn’t go to Yale she went to Smith to study History. Women weren’t admitted in Yale at the time Richard and Emily went to college but it was usual that girls colleges and guys colleges would have parties together and visited each other when there were couples. First mention of Emily attending Smith was in season 5. How many kropogs to cape cod. Richard jokes how Emily got kicked out of the women’s softball team for elbowing another girl. In season 7 I’m a kayak hear me roar, Emily says she went to Smith and majored in History.
36. They talk about Richard’s mother in the first season in past tense but later on Trix appears. It was an error of the first season when things weren’t that defined.
37. Alexis Bledel and Milo Ventimiglia did date in real life, apparently it ended really badly. She also dated Jared Padalecki. She didn’t date Matt Czuchry at least not that is known but both are extremely private people, however they are good friends and trust each other a lot from every interview they have given and enjoy working together. She’s now happily married to her Mad Men costar Vincent Kartheiser and they have a beautiful boy together.
38. Luke’s diner has the sign of William’s hardware store and not Danes’ because as a fandom we assume William was his dad’s first name. You’ll see changes in the diner all through the show. However Luke’s parents names are never mentioned ever during the show. The pilot episode was filmed in Unionville Ontario in a building that was formerly Williams hardware. For continuity when they moved to the studio lot at Warner Brothers the name was kept. I don't remember them ever explaining the name on the series other than the hardware store belonged to Lukes father
39. Lorelai’s doll house is NOT the same dollhouse on friends but it is the dollhouse they show on sale at Kim’s antiques, in one episode where Lane is going to talk to her mom about the band and Mrs Kim cracks the joke “but is past their bedtime”.
40. Yes Gil from Hep Alien is Sebastian Bach from Skid Row.
41. Yes the “hug-a-world” that was in the garage in season 4 is on their couch in season 1! (Same as the scary clown pillow is in a number of seasons lying around lol)
42. Alexis Bledel is actually a Latina. She was born and raised in the US but grew in a Spanish speaking, latino, household, her father and paternal grandfather are Argentinian, her mother, like herself was born in the US, but Alexis’ mother grew up in Mexico. Alexis didn’t learn English until she started school. The episode where Rory speaks Spanish with Esperanza (Season 6 episode 2: “Fight face”) she anglicized her native Spanish BECAUSE Rory didn’t know much Spanish. There’s an old interview with Ellen Degeneres on set while filming season 6 or 7 that she’s asked to translate for Lauren, she doesn’t translate everything due to nervousness. (It also happens when you live your adult life in a country that doesn’t speak your first language, growing up bilingual, you tend to adopt the accent of the language you use most and tend to confuse some words when you don’t use your native language often).
43. People praised the chemistry and physical closeness between Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, but there is actually a very logical reason for this: Alexis was a model and was just starting out acting and had a tougher time making her marks, so as veteran, Lauren often physically moved Alexis to make sure she was in the right place. Lauren told “The Today Show” in 2015: "The camerawork on that show is very specific and we really had to hit certain marks, which especially when you start out, is just a foreign concept...I remember a lot of times just kind of grabbing her, just kind of leading her arm. So, in the beginning, people are like, 'You have such great chemistry.' And I'm like, 'I'm mauling her. That's why.'"

"S t. Fiesta Cyr ”. Bar Harbor, Maine, 1914.

Always like everything’s going on in their lives. Instead of watching the newest season, I put it off only to rewatch the previous seasons. And it’s gonna take a loooong time. It depends on my mood, though. Everything’s negotiable.
MY FINE LINE
“Oh, it is really good. It’s the best coffee in town.”
(Lorelai Gilmore)
“You’re a regular Jack Kerouac.”
(Lorelai Gilmore)
“I’m just screwing with your mind.”
(Lorelai Gilmore)
Dialogue
Rory: Hey. It’s freezing.
Lorelai: Oh, what do you need? Hot tea, coffee?
Rory: Lip gloss.
Lorelai: Aha. I have vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and toasted marshmallow.
Rory: Anything in there not resembling a breakfast cereal?
Lorelai: Yes. It has no smell but it changes colors with your mood.
Rory: God. RuPaul doesn’t need this much makeup.
“Wow. You do not look old enough to have a daughter. No, I mean it. And you do not look like a daughter.”
(Joey)
“Korean never joke about future doctors.”
(Lane Kim)
Dialogue
Sookie: I want to put it on the waffles for breakfast.
Lorelai: I want to take a bath in that sauce.
Sookie: I will make more.
Lorelai: Someday, when we open our own inn, diabetics will line up to eat this sauce.
Sookie: Won’t that be great?
Lorelai: Yeah. But the key to someday achieving that dream is for you to stay alive long enough, so we actually can open an inn. Do you understand?
Sookie: Yes, I understand.
“It sucks that after all these years your mom still hates me.”
(Rory Gilmore)
“Boys don’t like funny girls.”
(Mrs. Kim)
“Protestants love oatmeal.”
(Sookie St. James)
“People are particularly stupid today. I can’t talk anymore with them.”
(Michel Gerard)
“There’s something I haven’t thought of. I know there is something staring at me right in the face. I just… I haven’t seen it.”
(Lorelai Gilmore)
“Since we are now financially involved in your life. I want to be actively involved in your life.”
(Emily Gilmore)
”God! You’re like Ruth Gordon just standing there with a tannis root. Make a noise.”
(Rory Gilmore)
Dialogue
Rory: Hey, how did you know I was reading Moby Dick?
Dean: I’ve been watching you.
Rory: Watching me?
Dean: I mean, not in a creepy, like “I’m watching you” sort of way. I just, I’ve noticed you.
Rory: Me?
Dean: Yeah.
Rory: When?
Dean: Every day. After school you come out and you sit under that tree there and you read. Last week it was Madame Bovary. This week it’s Moby Dick.
Rory: But why would you—
Dean: Because you’re nice to look at. And because you’ve got unbelievable concentration.
Rory: What?
Dean: Last Friday these two guys were tossing around a ball and one guy was nailed other right in the face. I mean, it was a mess, blood everywhere, the nurse came out. The place was in chaos, his girlfriend was all freaking out and you just sat there and read. You never even looked up. I thought, I have never seen anyone read so intensely before in my entire life. I have to meet that girl.
Rory: Maybe I just didn’t look up because I’m unbelievably self-centered.
Dean: Maybe, but I doubt it.
Dialogue
Lorelai: I forgot to tell we’re having dinner with your grandparents tomorrow night.
Rory: We are?
Lorelai: Mm-hmm.
Rory: But it’s September.
Lorelai: So?
Rory: So, what holiday’s in September?
Lorelai: Look, it’s not a holiday thing. It’s just dinner, okay?
Rory: Fine, sorry.
“Red meat can kill you. Enjoy.”
(Luke Danes)
“I don’t tell you everything. I have my own things.”
(Rory Gilmore)
Dialogue
Lorelai: This is about a boy. Of course. I can’t believe I didn’t see it. All those talk about money and bus rides, you got a thing going with a guy you don’t wanna leave school.
Rory: I’m going to bed.
Lorelai: God, I’m so dense. That should’ve been my first thought. After all, you’re me.
Rory: I’m not you.
Lorelai: Really? Someone willing to throw important life experiences outta the window to be with a guy. It sounds like me to me.
Rory: Whatever.
Lorelai: So, who is he?
Rory: There’s no guy.
Lorelai: Dark hair, romantic guy, looks a little dangerous.
Rory: This conversation is over.
Lorelai: Tattoos are good too.
Rory: I don’t wanna change schools because of all the reasons I’ve already told you a thousand times. If you don’t wanna believe me, that’s fine. Goodnight.
Lorelai: Does he have a motorcycle? ‘Cause if you’re gonna throw your life away, he better have a motorcycle!
Dialogue
Lorelai: Listen. Can we just start all over, okay? You tell me about the guy and I promised not to let my head explode, huh? Rory, please talk to me. Okay, I’ll talk. Don’t get me wrong. Guys are great. I am a huge fan of guys. You don’t get knocked up at sixteen being indifferent to guys. Babe, guys are always gonna be there. This school isn’t. It’s more important. It has to be more important.
Rory: I’m going to sleep.
Lorelai: Rory. You’ve always been the sensible one in this house, huh? I need you to remember that feeling now. You will kick your own butt later if you blow this.
Rory: Well, it’s my butt.
Lorelai: Good comeback.
Rory: Thank you.
Lorelai: You’re welcome. Rory, come on.
Rory: I don’t wanna talk about this. Could you please, please just leave me alone?
Lorelai: Okay, fine. We always had a democracy in this house. We never did anything unless we both agreed. But now I guess I’m gonna have to play the mom card. You’re going to Chilton whether you want to or not. Monday morning, you will be there, end of story.
Rory: We’ll see.
Lorelai: Yeah, we will.
Dialogue
Rory: So, do we go in and do we just stand here reenacting ‘The Little Match Girl’?
Lorelai: Okay, look, I know you and me are having a thing here and I know you hate me but I need you to be civil. At least through dinner, on the way home you can pull Menendez.
Rory: Fine.
“Is that a collector’s cup or can I throw it away for you?”
(Emily Gilmore)
“Well, it’s not every day that I have my girls here for dinner on a day the banks are open.”
(Emily Gilmore)
“An education is the most important thing in the world, next to family.”
(Emily Gilmore)
Dialogue
Emily: Lorelai, come back to the table.
Lorelai: Is this what it’s gonna be like every Friday night? I come over and let you attack me?
Emily: You’re being very dramatic.
Lorelai: Dramatic? Were you at that table just now?
Emily: Yes, I was. And I think you took what your father said the wrong way.
Lorelai: The wrong way? How could I’ve taken it the wrong way? What was open to interpretation?
Dialogue
Lorelai: Why do you pounce on every single thing I say?
Emily: That’s absurd. You barely uttered a word all night.
Lorelai: ‘That’s not true.’
Emily: You said pie.
Lorelai: Oh, come on.
Emily: You did. All I’ve heard you said was pie.
Lorelai: Why would he bring up Christopher? Was that really necessary?
Emily: He likes Christopher.
Lorelai: Isn’t that interesting? Because, as I remember, when Christopher got me pregnant, Dad didn’t like him so much.
Emily: Oh, well, please, you were sixteen. What were we supposed to do? Throw you a party? We were disappointed. The two of you had such bright futures.
Lorelai: Yes. And by not getting married we got to keep those bright futures.
Emily: When you get pregnant, you get married. A child needs a mother and a father.
Lorelai: Oh, Mom. Do you think that Christopher would have his own company right now if we’d gotten married? Do you think he would be anything at all?
Emily: Yes, I do. Your father would have put him in the insurance business and you’d be living a lovely life right now.
Lorelai: He didn’t wanna be in the insurance business and I am living a lovely life right now.
Emily: That’s right, far away from home.
Lorelai: Oh, here we go.
Emily: You took that girl, completely shut us out of your life.
Lorelai: You wanted to control me.
Emily: You were still a child.
Lorelai: I stopped being a child the minute the strip turned pink, okay? I had to figure out how to live. I found a good job.
Emily: As a maid. With all your brains and talent.
Lorelai: I worked my way up. I run the place now. I built a life on my own with no help from anyone.
Emily: Yes, and think where you would have been if you’d accepted a little help, hm? And where Rory would have been. But no, you always too proud to accept anything from anyone.
Lorelai: Well, I wasn’t too proud to come here to you two begging for money for my kid’s school, was I?
Emily: No, you certainly weren’t. But you’re too proud to tell her where you got it from, aren’t you? Well, fine. You have your precious pride and I have my weekly dinners. Isn’t that nice? We both win.
“You know what’s really special about our relationship? The total understanding about the need for one’s privacy. I mean, you really understand boundaries.”
(Rory Gilmore)

One-to-one with David
Today I had my one-to-one with David, I showed him the PowerPoint I had made with a selection of my work that I had put on. I showed him my video work and the latex which I had been focussing on more this year.
He mentioned the contrast of my black t-shirt and arms in the video which I had noticed too, he suggested I purchase some red leggings and a red jumper, so it blends in more with the work. I think this is a good idea, and I will look at purchasing something that blends in with the work, so it looks more polished.
These are all my notes from the one-to-one, I will get my feedback from David after Christmas, until then I will research each artist and artwork that he suggested I include in my contextual research.
David had mentioned Marvin Gaye Chetwynd briefly when I had seen him in the studio, I had not researched the artist yet, so I need to ensure I do this soon. He showed me a video of Chetwynd’s work. It was a performance based on the film, Star Ship Troopers/Spartacus. The artist had created the choreography for the performance where this character is being sacrificed to the blob. She designed all the costumes, all the performance, etc. They are not videos; they are documentations of a live performance – so the video quality is only part of it.
Recreates characters from films and creates a performance with it. The performance does not have a lot of bearing on the original source material because she messes and mixes it up, she creates her own language from it.
Rachel MaClean – She uses a green screen in most of her work. She always dresses up as characters, finds footage and uses the footage of them talking and creates a film. They are slick but David said he doesn’t think I need to do them in that way. Look at artists like this to look at how they do performance and video.
David said to look at the work of Louise Bourgeois as her work plays on the abject in art.
Carolee Schneemann’s performances have included meat. People riding around in meat entrails, an orgy with meat. “Meat Joy” 1964
Franko B is a gay artist, and so he talks about HIV within his work. In one of his performances, he cut his feet and walked up and down on a canvas, so you got this trail of blood. A more recent performance was him dressed in gold, and boxing. He was knackering himself out by hitting the punching bag. His performances are about endurance. I miss you. Milk and blood. Art and Freedom of expression
John Powell Jones creates performances and is vegan. David recommended I have a chat with John and look at some of his work, especially the performance at The Whitworth where it was a play on Boris. He creates cartoon-like characters from them.
James Unsworth is another artist who uses video in his work. His work is about grossness and is quite humorous. In the work David showed, they all dressed up as turtles. Like John Powell Jones, James Unsworth references pop-culture in his performances. Pinocchio.
David said I would have to think about what direction I want to take with my work. With the cow udders and the spit one, he said I should contemplate on doing them more humorous because they would be quite funny as performances. He said I could fill the rubber glove with blood and squeeze it out. I had thought about using a rubber glove inside the teat or even to make the udder and had spoken to Sue about it, she said it would be difficult to create the shape of the udder if I were to make it out of rubber. However, I can think more about this and see if there is a way that I could have blood coming out, as I milked the udder. David suggested I take this further and dress up as milk maid which would play on pornographic but also messed up because of the blood. The spit roast one could have blood pouring out as I am spinning it so it’s just spraying blood everywhere.
Whatever route I take, I need to consider which would be more successful. David said I could do them serious, dark, and abject but I might face challenges doing this because the public are so accustomed to seeing gross things.
He also suggested I read The Abject in Art by Julia Kristeva. He said I should also research the abject in art and what this means, how this connects to my work. There is two different ways I could go with the performance work, and this is something I must think about.
Matthew Barney was another artist David suggested, his work is very over the top, over blown, and baroque. He creates costumes, that are high production. They are more like films. The first one he did was low budget but as he gets more money, the quality changes significantly. Cremaster 5 is first one.
Other artists David suggested was Robert Gober who does weird sculptures, Sarah Lucas’ chicken, Phyllida Barlow, Joseph G. Cruz, and Cindy Sherman.
My work fits in the content of this. The question now is how I want to go with it? Do I want it to be humorous or disturbed? My work is going in two directions and I must decide which one I want it to go in.
If I do decide I want it to be gross and funny, I need to go over the top with this and play it for laughs. For example, with the milking and fake blood, it needs to be as disgusting as possible which shouldn’t be too difficult to do. Rubber glove with a tiny hole in it. When it is filmed, I need to do it well. David said I can do this in the studio, borrow lighting from the photography shop and make it look more polished. The spit video too, can be made as humorous, if I fill it with blood and turn it fast, then afterwards I could slow it down so that the blood is spraying out slowly.
David also mentioned Marina Abramovich Takes Over Sky which was a 5/6-hour performance on Sky Arts. I am going to try and find this online, even if I can only find clips. He mentioned there was somebody who put himself in a Perspex box and covered himself in banana, he had a phobia of moths and butterflies and put them all over him. This idea of freaking out the audience – like a Black Sabbath performance on stage.
Installations in spaces would be interesting. I could choose what space I want for the Degree Show and start creating interventions for that space. He suggested doing a performance on the night where I wear the knitted piece, and then it goes back into being a sculpture. I could stay under it for like 20 minutes at the beginning of the show and then rise, and freak people out. He mentioned a Thailand artist that did this, she did a performance where she covered herself in fur coats and lay underneath them. She moved underneath the coats and it went on for hours.
Where the work is the weakest is where I am being too literal. The work might be more disturbing if it is more abject. David compared horrors like the SAW movies compared to a zombie horror, where one is disturbing and the other is humorous. Quite fun and it can make interesting points. He spoke about the importance of feeling a genuine affinity with my work. He referenced the Blink-182 music video where there is a nurse walking down the street, and she is a sexualised character, funny. If I do this, I need to completely embody the character. It all depends on if I want to put myself out there. I need to have a play and see how comfortable I am doing that. Play with the ideas.
David said he would like to see more context in my work, which I will work on immediately. I will have a look at the artists he suggested and talk about the different ways of working. Comedy horror or abjectness? The work forces audience to confront actuality of the meat. That is what the work is doing. You look at the work, you feel gross and it reminds you of what the substance of meat actually is. He suggested I look at the research and information on the block that people seem to have, where they don’t see the meat as the animal. Butchers do it so you cannot see the shape of the animal. There is dissociation, society has been brain-washed, there is a mental block – the only way that people can do it.
David then mentioned when slavery happened, the only way people were to justify slavery was to dehumanise the slaves. They would talk about them like they don’t feel pain or don’t have emotions, it happened at a time where the Church was powerful, and they believed in God. The Bible says look after thy neighbour, so the idea of slavery is the complete opposition to that. So, to accept slavery was okay, they had to dehumanise the slaves so that they were not human. Otherwise, it went against their beliefs. To some extent, this is what is happening with animals. We tend to humanise domesticated pets, putting human qualities on them, but with farm animals we do the opposite. He said to look at the psychology research on how people deal with this.
David said if I can’t manage to make the performances that we were talking about, then speak about it in my writing on Tumblr. So that the reference is there, and it shows I know where my work is going. Talk about the rough sketches of the videos I have made – these are tests. Talk about what I want to do with them. Find humorous images of milk maid doing it with milk. 70s/Comedy. Figure out what I am going to do next with it. Performance, sculpture, installations.

New Post has been published on http://rachel-brosnahan.org/2018/12/06/press-the-marvelous-mrs-maisels-gauzy-gorgeous-fantasy/
Press: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Gauzy, Gorgeous Fantasy
The second season of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s 1950s comedy about an indomitable performer is as delightfully escapist as ever.
There are a handful of fleeting moments watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel when reality bites. Like when a well-intentioned woman in a Paris nightclub gives the stand-up comedian Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) the number of a psychoanalyst, telling her, “He’s done wonders for my friend Sylvia Plath.” Or every time Susie (Alex Borstein), Midge’s manager, is referred to as “that” or “it.” The pleasure of watching the series, for me, is always slightly tempered by the anxiety that Midge has lost or forgotten one of her children—an event so plausible that the neglect of baby Esther has been written into Season 2 as a running gag, where even Esther’s first word seems to be a response to the fact that she’s so persistently ignored.
None of this, though, is the point. Of course The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a fantasy: The strands in its double helix are formed out of old Leslie Caron movies, Borscht-belt humor, millinery, and whimsy. It’s gorgeous, spun-sugar escapism, with pearls, a potty mouth, and a Lilly Daché pillbox. Whenever anything even bends in the direction of inconvenience, it’s swiftly dispatched by Midge’s indomitable optimism and/or her rapid-fire repartee. A cheating husband, sexist comedians, threats of violence from an overzealous manager—all are overcome in what feels like minutes, bitter fruit squeezed ferociously by Midge into the captivating lemonade of her comedy act.
The first season of Mrs. Maisel won critical acclaim, two Golden Globes, and eight Emmys. The second, released in its entirety Wednesday on Amazon, is just as beguiling, even if it circles the runway a good few times before landing. If Season 1 was the origin story for how the wreckage of Midge’s failed marriage helped her find an unlikely new calling, Season 2 is the part where she has to reconcile the two very different faces of her superheroic identity. By day she’s a working mother (with more narrative emphasis on the “working” part), operating the switchboard at B. Altman after a makeup-floor fracas with her husband’s ex-mistress got her booted from the Revlon counter. By night she’s an up-and-coming comedian (the word struggling doesn’t really apply), honing her act and fighting her boorish rivals, whom she humiliates onstage.
Amy Sherman-Palladino, who wrote and directed half of the 10 episodes (her husband and producing partner, Daniel Palladino, wrote another four), goes all in on the escapism front, sweeping Midge and her parents, Abe (Tony Shalhoub) and Rose (Marin Hinkle), off to Paris in the first episode, after Abe finally notices that his wife has absconded to the city. The scenes that follow are loaded with every cliché in the 1950s-film playbook: street musicians, obstreperous French apartment managers, couples in clinches on the banks of the Seine. It’s a lavish, lovely spectacle, even if it quashes some of the momentum surrounding Midge’s career, a question mark that seems to frustrate Borstein’s superb Susie. (“Money is my main goal,” she tells Midge. “I don’t have any, and I’d like some.”)
Midge’s privilege, pointed out by some critics in Season 1, becomes more exposed in the new episodes, if not fully illuminated. Midge’s boss at B. Altman tells her that she’s the “most presentable of the basement girls,” a lightly veiled statement that ushers Midge back from switchboard purgatory to the first-floor cloakroom. Susie repeatedly reminds Midge that their stakes in her career are very different. For Midge, comedy is a thrilling diversion, but for Susie—who becomes at least partially homeless and scrounges food wherever she can find it—it’s a lifeline. In one scene, Susie comments nakedly on Midge’s “doorman and your maid and your child care and your bottomless closet,” a moment that seems to nod to Midge’s frequent moments of delusion (in a subsequent scene, Midge blunders into an ill-advised wedding speech that brings the bride to tears).
Brosnahan’s performance, though, doesn’t leave much room for unlikability. She’s just too charming, too unflappable, too determined to bend the world to her will. In the fourth episode, Midge, her parents, and the kids (it’s unclear for a good 10 minutes whether Esther is in the car) head to their annual summer vacation in the Catskills at a Dirty Dancing–style camp called Steiner Mountain Resort, complete with a beauty salon, 10-pin bowling, rowboats, and its very own welcome song. Mrs. Maisel’s costume designer, Donna Zakowska, goes to town in the new locale, dressing Midge and Rose in an endless array of floral-print sundresses and bonnets and cat-eye sunglasses. It’s a reminder that few shows on television look as unfailingly lovely as this one, or have the budget to scheme up such elaborate period productions.
The Catskills excursion also gives the show the opportunity to provide the world with a visual bonbon it never knew it needed: the sight of Tony Shalhoub, in a tan romper, going through the motions of a 1959 fitness routine. Shalhoub is, as ever, one of Mrs. Maisel’s greatest gifts, and the second season makes ample space for Abe’s endearing eccentricities, as well as his renewed relationship with Rose. The show also spends more time with Shirley and Moishe Maisel (Caroline Aaron and Kevin Pollak), Midge’s in-laws, and the strange dealings of their clothing business (one of the more engaging plot threads involves Shirley having squirreled money away in locations she draws on a treasure map because the Maisels don’t trust banks).
For all its costume-party clothing, hijinks, splashy locations, and detailed montages (and Sherman-Palladino takes the opportunity for a montage every time she gets one), the heart of the series is ultimately Midge’s comedy. Anything else the show might do, whether it’s heartbreak on moonlit Paris streets or comic interludes in Rose’s life-drawing class, feels like wheel-spinning. That’s why it’s so gratifying whenever Midge finally gets on a stage—any stage, and the mechanics of the first few episodes have her finding a fair few by happy accident. It’s her true gift, her irrepressible passion, her calling. Midge’s most successful stand-up routines find power in truth, whether she’s pinioning sexist comics who colluded to make her the last person onstage, or feeding off a French audience that finds her tales of her husband’s infidelity highly unremarkable.
Sherman-Palladino’s writing is never sharper than in Midge’s act, and Brosnahan’s timing and charisma sell her completely as a nascent star. Mrs. Maisel is the kind of show that could easily go on forever: Not because of its thorny romantic subplots (Zachary Levi plays a new suitor for Midge in Season 2, even though her chemistry with Luke Kirby’s Lenny Bruce is more interesting) or Midge’s engagingly offbeat relatives, but because the trajectory of Midge’s career seems so obvious. Sherman-Palladino has written a woman who’s fearless, blunt, and brilliant at what she does, and watching her rise is Mrs. Maisel’s trump card, even if the show is taking a moment to truly play it.
