Contrasting Architecture Programs: Canada vs Australia
Tumblr media
Pursuing overseas architecture ambitions, how do accredited education and early career outlooks compare between Canada and Australia - two welcoming study destinations?
Both countries offer reputed architecture programs at leading public universities like University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia etc charging international tuition between $33,000-$39,000 yearly aligning accredited degree completion requirements.
Graduate immigration schemes providing 2-3 years local work permits aid gaining registration requirements before globally exportable qualifications open overseas career mobilization options later.
But significant Canadian building boom and infrastructure push recovering from pandemic slowdowns is expanding junior architect jobs demand nationwide currently above Australian scales facing rising construction costs and cooling housing markets.
Therefore, Canada's surging new economy priority sectors like sustainability, heritage restoration and social infrastructure development perfectly synchronize professional timing for today's architecture graduates securing early career experiences helping register before exploring global mobilities.
So assess specialization interests, budget factors and job market outlooks in preferred destinations before finalizing overseas architecture pursuits guaranteeing best returns on educational investments!

The Rising Cost of Higher Education, and its Impact on the Family
The cost of pursuing higher education has been steadily increasing, having a profound impact on students and their families. Coming from a large family myself, I have experienced firsthand just how much of a problem this presents to the success of rising students and their families. Many simply do not have the income to save money to fund their children for further education upon high school graduation. However, the importance and impact of having knowledge in a field or earning a degree has caused many families to take on student loans. This results in the student loan debt crisis deeply affecting many today. The current and rising costs of higher education causes deep effects on students and their families.
With the cost of higher education on the rise, it is getting increasingly harder for parents and families like mine to set their children up for success in life with a degree. In an article published by CNBC Ray Franke, a professor of education at the University of Massachusetts, he states that, "If you look at the long-term trend, [college tuition] has been rising almost six percent above the rate of inflation"( Schoen) This fact poses a problem for parents who have a great desire for their children to have the added advantage of a college degree in pursing the success and achieving their dreams. My parents would love to be able to fund my college. I also have 10 siblings; therefore, it is next to impossible for them on a single income to also pay my way through school. Nonetheless, I know how important a college degree can be for success.
A college degree can play a significant role in the success of a student and the future flourishing of their own family. Elka Torpey from the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics agrees, workers with at least a bachelor’s degree earned more than the $907 median weekly earnings for all workers.” I firmly believe that all students who apply themselves to their studies and apply for scholarships and grants, are solid candidates to have the opportunity to pursue higher education without having to accomplish it through student loans. Any student who truly desires to make a difference in the world can through hard work and deep fortitude. Things such as scholarships and grants can be the difference between a degree that is paid for, and an exceedingly large amount of debt from student loans. An excess of student loan debt prevents newly graduated students from unlocking their full potential in the workplace.
Many teachers, doctors, engineers, and business owners from whom I have sought advice are still trapped under the seemingly endless payments of their student loans. Some say that they are expecting to be paying on these loans for the rest of their lives. With this obvious hamper to success, I will not be utilizing student loans to pursue my college education. Instead, I want to enroll in a college that provides a solid educational program with good financial aid and a great return on my investment for career readiness,  apply myself intensely to my studies and earning merit-based aid to a college that values the quality of their students, and applying to scholarships which value the need for higher education without excess debt.
Coming from a large family I must have the mindset of attaining a degree through effort and determination especially since I am pursuing education with the goal of graduating debt free. With the student debt crisis such a big issue and higher education costs continually rising, having a plan that is out of the box greatly contributes to success in life starting with college and even before college while in high school. My family has equipped me with the work ethic and drive. Now is the time to apply those cultivated traits and pursue education and success in life to benefit others and live responsibly. Pursuing and ultimately obtaining a college degree is an honorable endeavor and can lead to superior success and achievement in life.  However, this pursuit should never come at the cost of family and smart financial decisions.

STEM Education Is Important for Young Learners By: Ryan Walker candidate for M. ED. STEM Leadership from the American College of Education. The United States Department of Education’s website notes that, “it's more important than ever that our nation's youth are prepared to bring knowledge and skills to solve problems, make sense of information, and know how to gather and evaluate evidence to make decisions,” and reportedly spent roughly 540 million dollars through discretionary and research grants in 2019 in an effort to “foster expanded opportunities in these [STEM] in-demand careers,” (United States Department of Education, 2019.)  Online job recruiting site, ziprecruter.com, reports the average salary for STEM jobs is $50,849 per year boasting, “salaries as high as $117,500 and as low as $13,000, the majority of salaries within the [STEM] jobs category currently range between $30,000 (25th percentile) to $55,000 (75th percentile) across the United States,” (STEM Annual Salary, 2019.)  The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that, “top-paid graduates this year (2019) are once again expected to earn engineering ($69,188), computer science ($67,539), and math and sciences degrees ($62,177),” (NACE, 2019.) In 2014, economist Dennis Vilorio, with the US Department of Labor Statistics says STEM jobs will increase by 13% over the decade of 2012 - 2022 which is, “ faster than the 11-percent rate of growth projected for all occupations over the decade,” (Vilorio, 2014.)  Vilorio goes on to mention that occupations with both high employment and fast growth usually offer better opportunities than small occupations with slow growth.”  Looking at the comparable data from ziprecruitor and the National Association of Colleges and Employers in more recent years suggests Vilorio is correct. One way to get computational thinking and STEM integrated into the classroom early is by the use of sequencing, programming and coding, which does not have to be as daunting it sound.  It can be as simple as practicing daily routines such as getting dressed, learning to tie one’s shoes (Bonfiglio, 2019) or even using the Hokey-Pokey to practice order of sequencing (Relkin & Bers, 2020) all of which can be done at a very young age.  The theory of constructionism (Papert, 1993) claims that children learn best with hands on activities and having things or artifacts they constructed and knowledge by playing with and exploring concrete materials. “The social context of these explorations is also crucial, and teachers can provide scaffolding by creating a learning environment that supports children’s explorations and experimentation,” (Bers, Flannery, Kazakoff & Crouser, 2010). College Admissions: How Far Are You Willing To Go For A Seat In The classroom?
By Tayler Mickens University of North Carolina Greensboro Class of 2019
April 9, 2019
Tumblr media
The First notable American University was Harvard University founded in 1636. It is regarded today as the oldest University and has been long since a very prestigious institute. Because of Harvard’s prestige, high school (and their parents) becomes willing to do everything it takes to get into this institution in hopes of graduating. But this is not just the case for Harvard; people are willing to do anything to get into any university. But can you blame them? Obtaining at least an Undergraduate degree can earn them at least $600 or more increase than the median weekly earnings as opposed tothose who hold only a High School diploma. And the salary continues to rise, the more education a person gains.Salary difference, as well as many other reasons, are what motivates students to continue their education after High School.
Around this time every many High School seniors are preparing to take their next steps into adulthood. For a lot of these students, this means one thing: College. In fact, in 2017 the Department of Education reported that 70 percent of High School graduates go to college. During this time every year, college seniors are either finalizing their decisions on which institution they are planning to attend or exhaustedly awaiting their acceptance letters. This wasn’t an easy process because most have spent much of the school year, previous school year (Junior year), and previous summer breaks: studying/taking the SAT, finalizing class schedules, gaining recommendations, and sending out their applications to schools. Although, all of this is important the deciding factor of whether or not they are able to their dream school is solely in the hands of the Universities Admissions Staff. These people are upper-level employees at a University who have the deciding factor in who will be granted admissions. Before applying High School students are aware of the requirements schools have set for their students. Some of these include:high GPAs and SAT scores. Even if a student reaches or exceeds these requirements the University still has the right to defer admissions. Knowing this, parents and some students may go to great lengths to ensure their seat in a classroom.
In recent news celebrities such as Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman are just two of the 50 people being charged in a college admissions scam. Some of the actions included paying someone to take their child’s entrance exam and also paying the test administrator’s money to remain quiet about the test. Between 200,000 to $6.5 million was given in total from parents to help boost their child’s chances of getting into college. Lori Loughlin agreed to pay as much as $500,000 to allow her daughter admissions into to the University of Southern California. Her daughter is a popular teenage YouTube sensation named Olivia Jade. Many other people have been named and have pleaded guilty to participating in this scam. But this isn’t the only time people were done outrageous things to try and get their child into college. Some people themselves have gone great lengths to ensure that they have a seat at the table as well.
In Barbara, Grutter was denied admissions to the University of Michigan Law School. Grutter was surprised by this decision because she was able to maintain a 3.8 GPA and had earned a 161 on the LSAT. She filed a suit claiming that the Law school’s admission to using race as a factor in making admissions infringed on the rights guaranteed to her in the 14th amendment. The Equal protection clause located in the 14thamendment states that have to be treated in the same manner as someone else in the same position. Grutter believed that this bias allowed from individuals from a certain group an advantage of those with the same merit. It was decided in 2003 by the Supreme Court of the United States decided that the University Of Michigan Law School did not violate the equal protection clause granted in the 14th amendment. Because the Law school looks at the individual candidate and that there it isn’t possible that race could be the deciding variable in this process. Justice O'Connor, who delivered the opinion of the court, noted that the University being “race-conscious” does not infringe on the opportunities of non minority applicants.
Although this is an example of someone exercising their rights and it is no way even close to running a college admissions scam, it does provide an example of the great lengths people are willing to go in order to ensure they are granted admissions to their desired college or University. The American degree is considered to be a prize possession. What are the (legal) lengths you are willing to go to ensure your seat in the classroom?

Tayler Mickens is a senior at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I am double major in Political Science concentration in Pre-Law and African American and African Diaspora studies. My goal after college is to gain experience while studying and practicing for the LSAT.My plans to further my education include committing to a J.D./Ph.D. program.

Grant Writing Consultant
Who Doesn’t Love Free Money!
Have you considered being a grant writing consultant?  I have!  There are millions of dollars out there from various sources waiting for someone to apply for them.  Using grant money can be a boost to a start up business in order to acquire what you need.  The problem is not everyone knows how to go about applying for grants.
What does a grant writing consultant do you ask?  A grant writing consultant is responsible for most of the grant writing process.  Grant writing consultants are responsible to research evidence to support why the organization needs the grant and how the money is spent.  They apply then if accepted, then need to make sure the organization is using said grant money as appropriated.  They may also provide evidence such as receipts, videos, pictures, surveys, etc., and report back about how the organization is benefiting from the grant.  It is a start to finish position.
A grant writing consultant must be an organized individual who is able to communicate effectively with others.  They need to be able to work under pressure, as some projects have strict deadlines, to meet required timelines.  A grant writing consultant should also be proficient in English grammar and the grant writing process.  Connections with finding grant opportunities is helpful plus working with people.  Being a detail oriented individual that can multi-task several projects at different stages is a necessary skill.
Qualifications needed for this type of work are:
o  Proficient computer skills
o  Analytical and comfortable with databases
o  Ability to work well independently yet be an active team player
o  Commitment to the project at hand
o  Mastery in English language writing
o  Proficient in research skills
o  Research and analyze trends to promote the project
Salary ranges from $40,000 - $60,000 depending on what specialty you are in. Nonprofit and government agencies are the most frequent organizations that use grant writing.  A Bachelors degree and a specialization in your working area are preferred.
I found a database called FoundationSearch.org which is one of the largest in the United States with many services to offer for a subscription fee.  FoundationSearch.com
Databases Helpful to Grant Writing:
Grants.gov– provides information on a variety of grants and proposals available through the many state and federal departments of the United States government. Tutorials and educational materials are available to help you understand and work through the process.  Access is free to everyone.
Foundation Center – nonprofit that consists of 140,000 foundations and donors worldwide.  This database is updated weekly and you can search by grant or funder.  Some options are free but it requires a subscription.
Federal Business Opportunities– This database is focused on federal business funding.  There are 26,800 active grants.  Access is free to everyone.
Small Business Administration– The SBA does not give out grants but will help businesses find grants and ways to fund a small business.
Grants for research and development
ü If your small business is engaged in scientific research and development, you may qualify for federal grants under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. These programs encourage small firms to undertake scientific research that helps meet federal research and development objectives and have high potential for commercialization if successful.
Grants for exporting
The SBA's State Trade Expansion Program (STEP) provides financial awards to state and territory governments in order to help small businesses with export development. The program's mission is to increase the number of U.S. small business exporters and their export sales. Small businesses can work directly with the state entities that receive STEP awards.

Careers for creative people, https://www.bls.gov/careeroutlook/2015/article/creative-careers.htm
Creativity can be defined as the ability to produce something of value that did not exist before. You could harness creativity to design a product, make a blueprint, or write a script, for example. The outcomes of creative work may be wildly different among individual people or disciplines, but there are often similarities in the process.
The creative process often starts with a spark of inspiration: An idea. It can come at any time and from anywhere, such as from nature or people.
But inspiration alone is not enough for creating. Creativity requires hard work and patience to turn ideas into viable output. Workers increase their chances of success through planning, assessing, revising, and reflecting on their work.

Grant writers
According to Elka Torpey, Grant writers research, draft, and submit proposals that help organizations or individuals receive grant funding.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not collect data for this occupation because grant writers is anecdotal.  The reason for this is because grant writers can choose their hourly rate which can range from $20-$100, depending on experience, and other factors.  On the other hand, some grant writers may charge by the project which can be upwards of hundreds and even thousands of dollars depending on the project.  For more information, check out https://www.bls.gov/careeroutlook/2014/youre-a-what/grant-writer.htm
