ONE DAY IN BERLIN,GERMANY.
Tumblr media
Berlin, the capital city of Germany is an absolutely fascinating city with an important center of the European and German film industry. The city is well known for it’s festivals, diverse baroque architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts and high quality of living. The weather was gloomy and unpleasant at first - not particularly ideal for a first time South African traveler, alas the sun ended up making an appearance and nothing a few americanos couldn’t fix.
The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was a momentous moment in history, it marked the end of the Cold War and Soviet Union rule. The wall was built in 1961, it literally and metaphorically was the divide between the Capitalist west and Communist east. You can still see some parts of the wall dotted throughout the city, as a reminder of Berlin’s fascinating historical past.
If you do find yourself in Berlin for a few hours or for one full day, I have jotted down the must-see sights in consecutive order of how I toured the city. From the railway or central bus station you can purchase a 24hour single day ticket, take the underground metro to AlexanderPlatz and explore the city.
Must see sights:
TV Tower
The buildings main function is for several radio and television broadcasting stations and internally also known as "Fernmeldeturm 32". It serves as a viewing tower with observation deck including a bar at a height of 203,68 metres, as well as a rotating restaurant.
Museum Island , Berlin Cathedral & Unter Den Linden and Humboldt University
The Berlin Cathedral, also known as, the Evangelical Supreme Parish and Collegiate Church, is a monumental German Evangelical church and dynastic tomb on the Museum Island in central Berlin. Having its origins as a castle chapel for the Berlin Palace, several structures have served to house the church since the 1400s.
The Brandenburg Gate / Tor is a symbol of peace.
One of Berlin’s famous landmarks, an 18th century monument commissioned by the Prussian King Friedrich William II and since 1990 has come to stand for the reunification of Germany.
Tumblr media
The Victory Column
The Victory Column or as it’s known to locals “Golden Lizzie” originally stood in Königsplatz and was relocated to Großer Sternin 1939 at the orders of Hitler. It even survived World War Two with very little damage. You can purchase tickets to get amazing views of Berlin from the Victory Column.
Holocaust Jewish Memorial
Undoubtedly, Germany has a dark and tragic past. The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, designed by American architect Peter Eisenamn, is a stark reminder of how many people died under the Nazi Regime
Tumblr media
Checkpoint Charlie
The infamous border crossing point between East and West Berlin. You can visit the nearby Mauer Museum to learn more about the Berlin Wall.
Tumblr media
The Berlin Memorial Wall
The purpose of the memorial is to document the history of Berlin between the wall being built and being torn down. The Berlin Wall Memorial, situated right at the heart of the capital city, is the main memorial site dedicated to the division of Germany.
Eastside Gallery is the longest open-air gallery in the world.
In my personal opinion I think Berlin is one of the most liberated cities in Europe. As I have witnessed all around the city and it’s art some paintings are unabashedly political in the message they convey, some are more obscure and/or abstract. Some are quite funny, others rather dull. A few are more radical – yet others are almost endearingly naïve. Each viewer can form their own opinion.
Tumblr media
Berlin Canals & Riverbanks
It is said that Berlin has the most canals in Europe. I saw so many but I spent some time at The riverside path round the Stralau peninsula. It is three kilometres long and takes you past self-built houseboats, reed beds, lush green pastures, shady chestnut trees and tiny marinas where the sailing boats sway. We got some food and coffee.
Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is a Protestant church affiliated with the Evangelical Church in Berlin, Brandenburg and Silesian Upper Lusatia, a regional body of the Evangelical Church in Germany. It is located in Berlin on the Kurfürstendamm in the centre of the Breitscheidplatz.
The additional sights that I also saw was the the mall of Berlin, 2nd biggest mall, & Bikini Berlin (Bikinihaus) , a unique combination of shopping, gastronomy, workspaces, cinema, leisure, recreation and hotel – an urban, green oasis.

Danke Berlin!

Where to sleep in Tampico
In Tampico there is an excellent hotel service infrastructure . The city offers accommodation of all categories. From very cheap hostels to luxurious hotel chains on the beach. Along Miramar is the Costero Boulevard where there are great accommodations, restaurants and beach clubs.
In short, there is something for all tastes and budgets. Today we leave you our best recommendation:
Hotel Boutique Casa Meba
Casa Meba is a boutique hotel located in one of the oldest buildings in the city of Tampico . At the time of the Mexican Revolution it was located at the end of the city and its construction was specially designed to observe enemies who could attack the city from a distance.
Over the years, it was a shelter for many Tamaulipas citizens until it was abandoned, but now it has been completely remodeled trying to leave floors and original design to be known by anyone who likes culture and the arts.
It is a hotel that transmits history, art and culture. Without a doubt, it is the best choice if you want to live a complete experience.
Its location is one of the most profitable , since it is located just three minutes from downtown, and will allow you to visit almost all the places mentioned above.
It has 15 glorious rooms (each with a unique design) and excellent and secure parking.
Services:  Air conditioning, heating, telephone, fans, cable TV, high speed Internet, continental breakfast at all rates, laundry and dry cleaning and the best service you can imagine.
To book you can write to the following email, call their phones or book directly through Booking:
Address : Av. Hidalgo No. 1213 Col. Moctezuma
Phones :  52 833 3628490 and 2120316
Where to eat in Tampico
There is no doubt that one of the main tourist attractions in Tampico is the gastronomy. Its geographical location means that most of the dishes overflow with exquisite seafood such as shellfish and fish. In this city you will find a large network of restaurants that offer a wide culinary offer, suitable for all types of diners and budgets.
But the best restaurants in Tampico are those establishments that serve the typical dishes of the region, such as shrimp empanadas, grilled shrimp, stuffed crab, Chilpan tamales, seafood zarzuelas, Tampiqueña steak and the famous Tortas de la Barda, of which we spoke in previous lines.
Some famous restaurants in Tampico are: El Portón, Los Curricanes, El Porvenir and the Marisqueria Mahi Mahi.
Final advice
-Tampico can have a bit heavy traffic , especially in the center and main avenues. So, it is necessary that you take your forecasts regarding the transfer time.
-Because of the aforementioned, it is very convenient that you choose the accommodation according to the nature of your trip . If the purpose of your trip is business or you want to do cultural tours and go shopping in the malls, it is better that you sleep near the center. If you prefer to relax by the sea, choose a beach resort or hotel.
-In Tampico there is a large hotel industry. However, it is important to book well in advance , especially if you intend to travel on vacation.
– Tampico, Ciudad Madero and Altamira have developed thanks to the oil and petrochemical industry. When there is an event related to this industry, hotels fill up . Try to inform yourself about this, before you go.
-If you want a more ecological experience and want to practice hiking or other outdoor activities, it is good that (for security reasons) you hire the services of companies that are dedicated to organizing this type of trip .
-Pack light clothing , sandals, shorts, t-shirts and a good sunscreen.
-In September, the Letras en el Golfo Festival is held , an important cultural event attended by national and international writers. While in November the Cecilia Sanz de Ridaura Festival is held where shows of different artistic manifestations such as concerts, theater, literature and dance are held.

As investment pours in, a ‘new Stone Mountain Village’ aims to rise
Tumblr media

Brewers, developers, creatives, and other entrepreneurs call the village an up-and-coming, historic gem among metro Atlanta downtowns—its reputation be damned
The tour of what Jelani Linder and other enthused locals are calling the “new Stone Mountain Village” begins on a chilly Friday afternoon, at a local joint opened in 2018 called Stoned Pizza Kitchen, where every pun is intended. Linder, a Coldwell Banker Commercial Metro Brokers agent, is an unabashed ambassador for the village and a seasoned tour guide. He holds a masters degree in urban planning from the University of Georgia, serves as Stone Mountain’s Downtown Development Authority chair, and recently bought one of the city’s few new houses nearby with his wife, Shani. Before all of that, though, Linder grew up in another DeKalb County city, Decatur, when it was hardscrabble—back when his pals considered venturing into tony Oakhurst dangerous and gentrifying Kirkwood “a sin.”
Linder sees in Stone Mountain Village the next hip place, a refuge for Atlanta’s priced-out populace, and to prove it, we trek down East Mountain Street to—what else—the renovation project that’s becoming the city’s first big brewery.
“Once people can get over the perception, they get it,” Linder says of his city, en route. “It’s like a cult here, I’ll be honest with you, when people buy in. The enthusiasm, the excitement.”
Scheduled to open in March in a long-abandoned Pure filling station and auto shop, Outrun Brewing Company eschews the typical brewery motif of brick, reclaimed wood, and pipes; instead there’s pink neon, an arcade game the business is named for, and a “retro-futurism” vibe that feels like Stranger Things meets Miami Vice meets Milwaukee. The proprietors are two funny suds aficionados, Josh Miller and Ryan Silva, who met each other while running brewing operations at Decatur’s Three Taverns. It’s not long before they start echoing Linder’s boosterism, lending some credence to his “cult” quip.

The former filling station’s patio affords mountain views.
Miller: “There’s so many new businesses coming into Stone Mountain. It’s potentially the next big area.”
Silva: “It’s not much different than Decatur 15 or 20 years ago. It could be another Decatur.”
Miller: “People always say, ‘You’re all the way out in Stone Mountain’—all the way out? Have you driven the 15-minute drive? I take Memorial [Drive] from the eastside, and there’s never traffic, no matter what time it is.”
Silva: “The reality is, a lot of people can’t afford to live in [Atlanta], and that’s fine. We’re trying to bridge the gap between the city and the severely underserved suburbs. We wanted to be in on it from the start, not the tail end. We want to be part of building the community up and the struggles that are part of that.”
(Whether the small city could handle an influx of new residents remains to be seen, however. More on that shortly.)
Miller: “There’s so much raw potential here. All it takes is a couple of people saying, ‘Hey, let’s try something.’ And I think that’s happening now. That’s how these towns get started. It’s going to be a whole new world.”
Linder, grinning near the entrance: “If you look at our street grid, it’s what Suwanee and all these new communities are trying to duplicate. We’ve had it for 100 years—now we’re just trying to fill in the gaps.”
Tumblr media

The residue
Beyond the brewery’s garage doors, the future patio for Adirondack chairs, and a towering magnolia stands an amenity that no other historic downtown in metro Atlanta can claim: the world’s largest piece of exposed granite, like the pate of a balding giant. Stone Mountain Park—the rock and private adventure grounds—is Georgia’s most popular tourist attraction (4 million annual guests strong) and one of the most-visited in the entire Southeast. There’s a 3,200-acre wonderland of trails and recreational sites around the mountain, all free to anyone who might, say, grab a pizza or beer in the village and walk or bike six blocks to the park.
Tumblr media
Getty Images
The park is also home to the country’s largest shrine to the Confederacy, the enormous bas-relief sculpture of three Civil War leaders carved into the northern face, and a long, sullied history of Ku Klux Klan rallies and racist gatherings, including KKK parades as recently as the 1980s and an alt-right rally in 2016. The monadnock’s climbable, moonscape beauty includes a carving of Gen. Robert E. Lee as tall as a nine-story building—recently decried as the “largest shrine to white supremacy in the history of the world”—and the boulevard ringing it all bears the general’s name. The park was promptly closed last year when white supremacists attempted to rally during Atlanta’s Super Bowl. And though a group called Georgia Tourism Product Development Team has stepped in to help counter the reputation with reality, as the AJC reported last year, social media has played no small part in wedding the majority-black area with images of chanting, Confederate-flag waving white nationalists.
Sure, the symbols harken back to important American history. But they represent a glaring contrast to what’s becoming a more charming, diversified, and progressive former railroad village just beyond the park gates, where a wave of private investment promises to turn dead storefronts into a more organic type of attraction.
“This growth was bound to happen,” says Dorian DeBarr, Decide DeKalb Development Authority’s interim president. “As investors educated themselves and took an opportunity to actually experience what the village has to offer, it was a no-brainer.”
Tumblr media
Main Street scenes today.
Tumblr media
More broadly, DeKalb saw a surge of capital investment in 2019 to more than $1.1 billion—eight times the previous year—and growth as an entertainment industry destination, with productions as disparate as Dolly Parton Presents, Watchmen, Bad Boys 3, and Jumanji: The Next Level filming nearby. The mountain itself, of course, was immortalized in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s most iconic speech, and this village of less than two square miles is where TV, music, and film superstar Donald Glover grew up.
So the contrast runs deep, like the granite. And for some, it stings.
“When you look at South DeKalb as a whole, it’s majority black, so you have to take that into consideration,” says Alan Peterson, the city’s Downtown Development Director with the DDA. “The monument, it’s state-owned. It’s history. It happened. There’s nothing we can do about it, and we’re just trying to move forward.”
The decline
Linder estimates that, as of a few years ago, between 60 and 70 percent of the early 20th century storefronts along Stone Mountain’s Main Street were vacant. Which makes a scathing Facebook review of the “ghost town” village, deposited on the city government’s page in 2016, no surprise:
“Only a few businesses remain and I can’t for the life of me understand how they are sustaining,” wrote one unimpressed patron. “The look on tourist faces when they visit downtown varies from shear surprise [sic], to disappointment and all-out disgust.”
Tumblr media
The vacant, circa-1905 Stone Mountain Inn building is located down the block from most recent retail activity.
That description conflicts with the bustling hub the village used to be. During Reconstruction, the Main Street area sprang into a center of tourism and industry hinged on quarrying. Local granite was shipped across the world, used in Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel, the Panama Canal, and in at least one building in almost every state in the U.S., including in the foundation of the Lincoln Memorial.
When the grounds around the mountain operated as a less-commercialized state park, the village was where tourists came for lunch, souvenirs, even a store that peddled butterflies, often riding a train that connected the two attractions. The state still owns the mountain but is leasing commercial operations for at least the next quarter-century to Norcross-based Herschend Family Entertainment, which owns or operates many other themed tourist hubs, such as Dollywood in Tennessee. The privatization deal began in 1988, and longtime locals say the village’s vibrancy soon changed, as the park’s main entrance was shifted to a U.S. Highway 78 exit, the village train ceased, and visitors began skirting the old town.
“I mean, they’re in business—nobody can blame [Herschend] for trying to keep the business in the park,” says Rory Webb, co-owner of Main Street bistro Stone Mountain Public House, who lives in a historic village house nearby. “But when they did all that, they virtually strangled the town. And I think a lot of the businesses weren’t willing or able to change with the times, to morph.”
Another struggle has been the misperception of rampant crime.
Business owners and longtime residents say two or three police officers from the city’s small department are seen patrolling the city’s 1.7 miles at most times, lending a sense of quietude—a bubble, even. Stone Mountain Police Department statistics show violent crime rates in 2019 at four per every 1,000 residents—or about 1/6 of the national average. An average of 21 property crimes, however, were reported per month last year, so it’s relatively safe but not exactly Mayberry.
“The worst thing is, a lot of people hear ‘Stone Mountain,’ and they think of unincorporated Stone Mountain,” says Webb. “You turn the news on, and there’s a stabbing or shooting in Stone Mountain, but you look, and it’s the DeKalb police, not inside the village.”
“It’s frustrating,” the DDA’s Peterson concurs. “We’re a small city, and our police force does a great job.”
Tumblr media
The Main Street DIY crafts hub Stillwell’s Emporium, decorated for the village’s Mardi Gras parade in February.
Back on the walking tour, the Linders lead the way into a CBD retailer that opened next to the new pizza parlor in January, The Rose & Hemp. Behind the counter, founder Scott Koester says he and his wife, with a baby on the way, traded a 1,250-square-foot East Lake bungalow for a house they bought more than three times that size outside the village’s limits. He plans to live there for decades.
Koester was easily sold on the business location, he says, after parking across the street one day—in a lot where a free, open-container Friday music series, Tunes by the Tracks, will happen again this spring—and taking one look at Main Street’s bones.
“I can’t speak to the past, because I don’t know, I haven’t been here,” says Koester. “But it seems like a lot of people are coming together, to work together and make this a place people want to come.”
Directly above the shop, Lauren Godfrey and Ebonee Thompson, two friends and tech-company coworkers, are putting the finishing touches on the city’s first large coworking space, C3 Village, a sort of warmer WeWork with endearingly creaky floors and a lounge designed to resemble a Friends set. Like the brewers, CBD entrepreneur, and many others, they spoke of building a village of business allies and not competitors, each boat rising with a tide.
“Look, I’m a black girl from Florida, she’s a white girl from Georgia, and I think that it speaks to the story that people from completely different backgrounds can come together and create something so magical, something so passionate,” says Thompson, whose background in tourism has also landed her a deal to run the city’s new social media campaign. “That speaks volumes to what this community can do.”
Tumblr media
Thompson and Godfrey, in the circa-1940 space they’ve renovated themselves into a coworking hub.
The upswing
As part of the city’s refined pitch to more investors, Peterson says the DDA is in the process of tabulating how much private investment—hundreds of thousands, at least—Stone Mountain has recently seen.
In January, the city inked a $155,000 contract with Atlanta architecture and engineering firm Pond to create a new downtown masterplan. Expected to be ready by August, the plan will aim to boost village esthetics and channel area visitors in from main arteries (by way of enhanced signage, as a starting point). Changes could also include additional bike lanes and green space meant to build off cyclist traffic that the popular PATH trail brings. A current city motto—“Atlanta’s Mountain Town”—is destined for the Dumpster, Peterson says.
Beyond the buildouts for forthcoming businesses, the makings of a buzzy, urban-style place are already here, headed by a diverse set of proprietors: a bike shop, arts center, theater, makers studio, antique shops, health store, new coffee house Gilly Brew Bar, event center and music studio 5380 Studios, a pie shop, and longstanding eateries like Public House, Sweet Potato Cafe (in a funky bungalow off Main Street), and the stalwart Wells Cargo Cafe.
Tumblr media
Gilly’s coffee house occupies the 1834 former home of Stone Mountain’s first mayor, where both Union and Confederate casualties were hospitalized during the Civil War. A new restaurant is also planned.
Tumblr media
“I mean, Stone Mountain is one of the largest attractions in the Southeast,” says Gilly barista Ivan Solis. “It’s kind of crazy how many people go there, but don’t come here. It’s kind of weird.”
Around the corner from the brewery in a circa-1900 brick building, however, could be the most-hyped new attraction on the walking tour: 13th Colony BBQ, a venture by Stone Mountain native Jonathan Hartnett of Decatur’s Las Brasas. That’s expected to open in April, on the corner opposite Stoned Pizza Kitchen, lending another commercial jolt to the village’s nucleic intersection.
“People love to see old historic buildings from the early 1900s repurposed,” says David Downs, a Realtor with Keller Knapp Realty, who fell for the village during group cycling rides from Decatur—and who’s bought and renovated three Main Street buildings in recent years. “You can’t build history.”
Housing outlook
As a tangerine sunset flares over the pines, the walking tour concludes at a development called Hearthstone Park that could lend a glimpse at Stone Mountain Village’s residential future—where the Linders both own a home and, as real estate agents, are actively selling others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jelani, who’s been a village resident and homeowner since 2006, says Hearthstone marks the city’s first new housing development in nearly 20 years. Thirty-four standalone houses are planned around a central park, each with three bedrooms and mountain views. A starting price of $285,000 buys 1,500 square feet and change, while the $350,000 range gets a finished basement and 2,400 square feet.
“This is a half-million dollar product intown, at least,” Jelani notes in the model unit’s living room. “It’s something for people getting pushed out, or empty-nesters.”
For existing housing stock, Neighborhood Scout pegs the median Stone Mountain home value at just $127,724, with a majority built between 1970 and 1999. Per recent sales records, the low $200,000s buys a livable three-bedroom, midcentury bungalow within a few blocks of the village.
But the renovated classics near Main Street are harder to come by, often trading by word of mouth before listing. “When older homes do come on the market,” says Shani, “they go like that—snap!”
Census estimates show the city’s population has inched up by less than 500 people since 2010. And Jelani says infill opportunities in city limits are limited. So one can’t help but wonder, should the droves come seeking relatively affordable housing in a unique, walkable, outdoorsy setting—amidst a metro expected to ballon with 3 million more people by 2050—where they all might fit.
But that’s a matter for another, more sober day.
It being Friday night, the Public House—the village’s de facto Cheers—comes alive with clinking glasses, ragtime music, and karaoke crowds. In the back, huddled around a booth, Webb the co-owner describes how the village retains an overtly friendly, come-on-over southernness without the yesteryear stigma. He points to a crowd that’s diverse—and by all indications, defiantly proud of it.
“You either fall in love with the village, or you don’t,” says Webb. “And if you do, you got to live here. It’s the best hidden gem in Georgia.”

Sean Doherty: ¡Sin duda alguna!

Sarah Donohue: Sí, yo fui a Argentina.
Sean Doherty: No, lamentablemente no fui nunca.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
VENTAJAS:

World Surf League promove o inédito ‘Onda Do Bem’, torneio de cunho social, que une atletas do surfe e celebridades
Fonte: WSL Latin America
Do lado feminino: as free surfers Marina Werneck e Alana Pacelli; a atriz Larissa Murai; a ex-surfista profissional e hoje apresentadora Erica Prado; e a atriz Danni Suzuki.
Onda do Bem – WSL / WSL LATIN AMERICA

Atrás, chamam a atenção as lanternas, para-choque e spoiler redesenhados.
Nesta quarta geração, o Hyundai Santa Fe cresceu.

Mecânica do novo Santa Fe

História do Hyundai Santa Fe
O SUV médio utiliza a mesma plataforma do sedã Sonata.

Washington D.C.
We stayed at the Best Western Georgetown which was 8 floors, had duly breakfast which consisted of eggs, breads, sausage, pancakes and various fruits and cereals. They did have a very international staff. Georgetown. 22nd St. Has a Hilton, marriott and a Ritz Carlton. This is really a great area to be in. From where we were, the White House was about a 15/20 minute walk. The nearest subway was Foggy Bottom which was about 4 blocks away and the blue line took you to most of the major sites. If you took "M" street, it took you down to an area which had restaurants, stores and was a few blocks from the wharf. Fun and vibrant area. We ate at a restaurant called Il Canale which was busy and quaint. I did enjoy that the cooks, who seemed relatively young spoke Italian. There is a Renaissance Hotel at the end of the strip that was quite centrally located. We did stop at a cupcake store/restaurant called "Sprinkles" in which a few were purchased as consumed. It was featured on a tv show on the travel channel. We also too a night time open air bus tour that we booked at the hotel. He name f the company was "Big Bus Tours" and they were great. Though the microphone didn't work all that well all of the time we saw quote a bit and ha time to stop and see some of re sites. Some highlights were the Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther Kings Memorial, Roosevelt's Memorial and we passed by several major sites. Metro center exit is where the Hard Rock, Fords Theater, Madame Tassauds Wax Museum, International Spy Museum amongst Resturants and shops. We did have great pizza at Pie which was just a few blocks from the Spy Museum. We did tour the the Fords museum which was free and timed. We walked to the basement of the theater and in it laid a museum, in this museum was the gun that shot and killed Abraham Lincoln. Quite surreal. Then we were walked up into the theater and were allowed to take photos and were given a step by step account of what occurred the evening the president was shot. Afterwards, as part of the tour, we walked across the street to the house in which the president was taken too and passed away at 7:22am the following morning. Again, quite surreal. R and Connecticut are a lot of restaurants and shops. Air and space. Highlights. Spirit of St Louis. Holocaust Native American. Highlights The structure of the building. Native Americans believed that evil spirits his in corners hence the building being made without them. The only corners in the building are in the bathrooms. We did have lunch here as well as we were told by our tour guide from the bus tour that the food was amazing which it was very good but it was also very very expensive. American history. Highlights. A run the decades. It was neat to see everything that came out in each decade and certainly was a trip down memory lane for those of us who were old enough to remember. National history Highlights. Hope diamond. Ear rings give to Marie Antoinette by Napoleon. Gems. They most certainly did have quite a variety. Zoo Highlights Pandas. Though we did not see them, they were there. It seemed as if every animal that we saw were all sleeping. National archives. Bill of rights. Declaration of Independence. Constitution. Arlington Cemetery. Took the trolley tour which was 12.00 per adult and 6.00 for children ages 5-15. Here we saw the resting places of President Taft as well as President Kennedy and his wife Jackie Onassis. We did witness the changing of the guards in front of the tomb of the unknown soldier. It occurs every 30 minutes and is quite a stock event. July weather was hot bit was in the high 80's all week long. The U.S. Capital is under renovation and expected to be completed by 2017. The Mall is pretty tore up as well as they are updating the landscape.

Dear all,
Hello to everyone from France, and a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Bloody Holidays to all you slackers! I hope you enjoy your holidays, your sunshine and your beach. I will enjoy my non-holidays, my dismal grey sky and rain and zero degrees and my non-beach. Have I mentioned that it’s cold?! Well, here’s the next chapter of the France saga, it’s a longun, I’ve been having fun, very sorry.
Possibly the worst photo of me in the history of all photos of me. But I still wear my Noel a Strasbourg christmas hat every year :)
So anyways, I don’t even know where to start to tell you all about my Christmas, Strasbourg and what my New Year’s Eve will be! It’s been such a fantastic week, I can’t imagine going back to school on January 2nd! That’s not even enough time to recover from New Year’s Eve!
Well, I guess let’s start with Strasbourg :) Last Tuesday I got up nice and early at 6 am to get to the train station, to change the tickets because the ticket man had gotten them wrong, to get on the train at 8 am. Two hours to Paris (Gare d’Austerlitz), change train stations via the metro (I love the Parisian metro!) to Gare de l’Est (the Eastern Train Station). Jump on the train very quickly and try and find our seats. I assured my companion that they were in car number 111, but no: “That’s first class it can’t be there!” So after two or three tours of the entire train looking for our American friend who was already on the train I began to think perhaps we were on the WRONG train, which wouldn’t really be a problem until the ticket collector came (never mind that we could be heading to a completely different destination…) (See how blasé I was by this point! I think this was truly the time I really started to settle into France. There’s a point when you tip over from translating your thoughts from English to French, to just thinking in French in the first place. It took a few months, but I was definitely thinking in French by Christmas. The next turning point is dreaming in French. By then, you’re practically a native. It’s a remarkable experience!).  Eventually we found our American companion in car 111, and voila, we were at least on the right train! (Tip 11: Your seat on the train becomes fair game if you don’t take it. Seating on a train is kind of like seating in a cinema – if you don’t get into your seat quickly enough, someone else will take it because somebody else has already taken their seats too. And so it goes.). We arrived in Strasbourg at about 3pm, and walked directly to the hostel to drop off our heavy bags. When we saw the hostel we were amazed. I knew that it would be 20.50 euros a night and thought that the place might be a bit of a dump because for that price that’s about what you normally get – and a lot of hostels aren’t exactly comfortable. But the place was spotless, new, with brilliant facilities – a bar, a restaurant, downstairs there was a baggage room and tv room, there was an elevator (essential since we were on the third floor and we all had luggage) and our room was bright, open, spacious and clean! Needless to say we were incredibly impressed. The price of the room also included breakfast – which we were only up early enough for one morning!
So we had just left the hostel to see the sights when we got a call from another American assistant from Paris. He is a friend of a Mexican assistant in Châteauroux with us. She has gone to Spain and Morocco for the holidays, but her friends were going to be in Strasbourg at about the same time we were, so she had told them to look us up. So we arranged for them to find a café while we looked around the Christmas market (Kristkindelmarik), just a wander through them really to see what it was about. When we got directions to the café it was already about 6 o’clock. So we gets to the café and there’s not one, but four young gentlemen waiting for us – three Americans and a Mexican.
One of the many stalls at one of the many Christmas Markets in Strasbourg
So, Strasbourg was a blast: the party scene was cool and the company was just superb – we couldn’t have asked to meet anyone better! After meeting the boys on Monday at the café, we bought some alcohol and snacks, found their car after a long walk in the opposite direction, crammed all seven of us into the very small 1989 volkswagon, and found the hostel on the other side of town without getting pulled over by the police. So then we took all four guys up to our room, brought out the snacks and alcohol and got down to the business of just sitting around chatting, drinking and eating until midnight when the wine and whisky had run out. At that stage we decided that it was imperative to go out to a bar or buy some more alcohol – OR, a much more enticing option: go to GERMANY. That, though, would require the car and since we had all been drinking, we decided that seven in the car was not a very good idea for crossing the border. You can just imagine the German police pulling over this pissy little volkswagon loaded to the teeth with drunken, foreign 20 somethings! Well… one thing led to another, and five of us ended up loading into the car and skipping across the border!!! I’VE BEEN TO GERMANY!!! We crossed the bridge and went to the first bar we saw – a pokey little one-roomer with the bar itself and about five tables, which was practically empty except for us. We had such an amazing time, the boys were those ‘matey, blokey, funny’ type of guys, with TERRIBLE French accents insistent on speaking drunken French (in Germany). Crawled into bed at 2am.
I should point out that the boys were staying in a dorm room for one person – it was the ‘uni hall’ type room of a friend who had vacated it for the holidays, so one boy had the bed each night while the others had a piece of cold, hard concrete floor each night. So… one of the guys may have stayed over in our room… and the staff said nothing.
Wednesday night the boys got back into Strasbourg late, nearly midnight. They had gone to a roman bath in Germany and were supposed to spend the night at a friend’s but it had snowed the night before, the roads were iced over, they were in the mountains – you can guess what happened: they hit a patch of ice and ended up in the wall. Luckily there were no injuries. By then they had already taken several wrong turns anyway, and they decided to call it a day and come back to Strasbourg to spend the night with ‘les filles’, after stopping to buy alcohol in Germany because nothing’s open in France. At 2am several of us ducked out once again to find a bar in the freezing night on the other side of town – walking of course. We eventually found a nice bar, with a cute barman (2 cute barmen in fact). Michel was my favourite. Samuel liked the American among us. Anyways, we left when they closed at 4 am, with the promise of coming back Thursday night, which we did. That night, two of the gentlemen stayed over, and once again the staff said nothing. We love that hostel and those staff!
I did see things in Strasbourg, I promise! Here’s the vieux Strasbourg with the quaint timber-clad houses backing straight onto the canals.
Thursday night was supposed to be an early night, since we had to leave the room by 9 am the next morning. The boys had left early on Thursday morning after two hours sleep, so us girls returned to our bar and had a bit of a more quiet night (3.30am that is). We had to be up at 7.30am to leave the room and have breakfast! Needless to say we were exhausted Friday when we had to wait for the train with our bags!
The intrepid travellers who made my trip to Strasbourg so memorable :) Love them to bits :)
So, moving on from our party life… The huge ttraction for us in Strasbourg was the huge Christmas market. We quickly found out that it’s not so much one huge market, but like five or six little markets in little places, or squares as we Aussies would say. The Christmas markets are made up of little villages of wooden ‘houses’, all selling from their open fronts little figures of Père Noël (Father Christmas), nativity scenes, animals, the usual trinkets, candles, toys, Christmas hats (bonnets de noel), waffles, crepes, chichis and the Strasbourgian favourite: spiced hot wine (vin chaud). This was my first taste of heated spiced wine and it basically lived up to its name – it’s hot, it’s wine and it’s spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and other Christmasy stuff like that. It takes your breathe away even before you drink it. It’s got a super-sweet smell, and it really warms you up on a freezing cold day. It wasn’t disgusting, not at all, but just far too rich and sweet for me.
The little village underneath the biggest sapin de Noel (Christmas Tree) you could ever imagine.
I absolutely loved the Christmas markets, tinsel and decorations and hanging ornaments and Father Christmases everywhere, every sort of Christmas tree decoration and every set of lights you can imagine – so many beautiful, sparkling sights to see.
And outside of the markets themselves, an enormous Christmas tree that blots out the sky, and each restaurant, shop, house, museum, and other sort of building that exists is brilliantly decorated, giving the entire city a glittering festive look even though it’s one degree in the middle of the day! The enormous cathedral towers over the city, an enormous grey gothic mass of towers and statues – you have to look straight up from the base of it and you still can’t fit all of it in the photo!

We took a tour of the Kronenbourg brewery while we were there – it’s amazing what you can learn about beer from something like that! Did you know there are three types of beer – white, amber and brown. And they come from different types of wheat or mead or even corn! And did you know that Kronenbourg is now owned by a Scottish company which also owns Foster’s which would be why I can find Foster’s over here, but not decent Australian beer. We got two free drinks as well, which was really cool.
We also took a boat tour of the river for an hour. It was picturesque and extremely interesting. It seems that Strasbourg is the capital of the world. La Marseillaise, the national anthem of France, was written by a soldier in Strasbourg; the Gutenberg Press was invented in Strasbourg; the European Union Constitution was written, signed and ratified, or whatever, in Strasbourg; the headquarters of the European Commission are located in Strasbourg… If I could live anywhere in France, Strasbourg would be the city to choose, for sure.
For Christmas itself, rest assured that I wasn’t alone. I invited the remaining two assistants in Châteauroux (my South African bestie, and the same young Mexican lady I toured Strasbourg with) chez moi for Christmas dinner, on Christmas Eve. In France Christmas is celebrated on Christmas Eve. It was a fantastic multi-cultural affair. I made my family’s famous potato bake as well as coq au vin (a traditional Alsacian dish of chicken breasts in a mushroom and white wine sauce). The Mexican assistant made spaghetti with a light tomato and basil dressing. The South African looked after the fruit salad and ice cream. That girl knows how to choose ice cream! We ate and drank and danced around and looked at some photos and started watching a movie but were so exhausted that we all fell asleep just after it started! Christmas Day was a day of much the same as Christmas Eve with the South African, relaxing, eating, drinking, dancing, watching movies, and not at all lonely or sad.
Anyways, since I don’t know what I’m doing for New Year’s Eve and I have to prepare classes for next term and all of that boring stuff – the work that gets in the way of life – I should keep going and let you all keep going on your holidays.
So here is the end of this heavy tome, cheers to all and enjoy your holidays and your summer and your sunshine.
My footprints in the snow
A lovely light white blanket greeted me the next morning
PS: I’m adding this note onto this letter on Wednesday 28th because I have some incredibly, fantastical, superbly, marvellously, magnificently, fabulously, trop cool news for you! IT’S SNOWING!!! I’ve already been outside, taken photo after photo after photo, made snowballs, but there’s no one to have a snowball fight with! It’s so beautiful, it’s really light, it’s like powdered ice, tiny little square flakes of thin, frosty ice, it’s so beautiful! I love snow! It’s all white and fun and it’s really really cool! TROP COOL!
Love to all, cheers,
Karen.
