Architects Otero and Sanfeliu worked on the project of the 40-meter-high monument.

The top of the Arch is crowned with a sculptural composition in the form of four horses harnessed to a carriage. They are ruled by the goddess Minerva. But not everyone knows about the magnificent Te Pinnacles desert, which boggles the imagination with its amazing landscape and unusual rocky sculptures. It is about this colorful place that will be discussed in our review.

Unique place

The name of this corner of the “green” continent is translated as “desert of pointed rocks”. At first glance at the lifeless spaces, it becomes clear what exactly served as the basis for such a name. Rocky statues rise everywhere, which bear a certain resemblance to a cone or pyramid and stretch to the blue sky with pointed peaks. The height of each such “creation” ranges from 1 to 5 meters. It seems that the rocks were picked up according to certain criteria and taken to a remote corner of Australia, where today they present a whole exhibition of Mother Nature’s creations. Among the huge number of limestone figures, it is impossible to find even one pair of identical ones.

The easiest way to get to this “park of rock figures” is from the Australian town of Cervantes, which is located just 20 minutes from the picturesque corner. And even such a short trip through the country’s beautiful expanses will give a lot of new impressions. The authorities are well aware that the tourism business’s income makes up a significant share in the formation of the annual budget and is doing everything to make the way to attractions and objects easier and more comfortable.

Nambang Park, which includes an amazing desert, is no exception. Tourists who are lucky enough to visit these parts do not hide their delight and call the Pinnacles the “highlight” of the National Park. As already noted, you can get to the Pinnacles by road from the town of Cervantes. But traveling in the desert itself will not work without a special car. Jeep tires, which are specially equipped for such trips, must have increased resistance to sharp stone peaks, and special frames protect the suspension elements and frame. Tourists who have been to the desert more than once know that outwardly dissimilar rocks are united in groups. Of particular interest to visitors is a group of limestone formations known as Ghost Silhouettes. The Palio of Siena, a famous Italian tradition

The Palio of Siena (in the Tuscany region) is undoubtedly the most important manifestation of the city and one of Italy’s most famous. It is not an event organized for tourist purposes: it is really part of the people of Siena’s life and emotion. The competition has ancient origins and an exact regulation that dates back to the year 1644, when the first Palio with horses was instituted, as it is still run today, in a continuity never interrupted.

The entire territory of the city of Siena is divided into 17 “contrade” (neighborhoods), with limits established in 1729, by order of Violante de Baviera, governor of the city. These neighborhoods have particular names: Aquila, Bruco, Chiocciola, Civetta, Drago, Giraffa, Istrice, Leocorno, Lupa, Nicchio, Oca, Onda, Pantera, Selva, Tartuca, Torre and Valdimontone. Each neighborhood is like a small state, which has its own church, with a nearby headquarters where all the heritage of the neighborhood connected to the Palio is preserved: relics, palliums of victories, costumes for the Historical Corteo (whether ancient or current-use costumes ), flags, archives and everything that refers to the neighborhood itself.

10 neighborhoods participate in the Palio: some are elected, others drawn by lot (so in each palio the participating neighborhoods will change). The riders have typical costumes with the neighborhood’s particular colors; It should also be noted that this is one of the few competitions in which sponsorships are not allowed.

There are many ways of looking at the Palio of Siena: for some it is just a violence towards animals, as running horses almost always fall or collide with each other; For others, it is just a manifestation of sport, because in the end it is horse riding with a hobby and a stadium atmosphere; for others, it is a folklore party that is organized to win over tourists, even if the competition itself takes a few minutes.

What is certain is that the days of the Palio, which culminate in the final day of the race, are expected in the city throughout the year, and that is why in the end, the reaction is so explosive, both in the happiness of victory and in the pain of defeat.

The Palio of Siena, a famous Italian tradition

Two Palios, for four days

There are actually 2 Palios de Siena: one that runs on July 2, and the second that runs on August 16 – called for that reason the Palio de la Assunta. Both are of national importance and that is why they are broadcast on national television, on channel Rai 1 or Rai 2.

Each Palio takes place in four days, so one begins on June 29 and the other on August 13: everything begins with the assignment of the horses to the contradas, and ends with the tour and the party that follows.

Here in detail what happens on the different days of the Palio of Siena :

First Day of the Palio (6/29 or 8/13):

From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., the “tratta” takes place during the morning, consisting of the selection of the horses that are presented to the city – there are usually about thirty animals. Among them, the captains of the contradas that are going to run the Palio choose 10 horses, which in the afternoon (around 12.30-13.30) are assigned to the participants. It is a very important and heartfelt moment, because from this moment the inhabitants of the neighborhoods know if they have a strong animal or not, and they can begin to think of possible strategies for victory.

In the afternoon, the first test of the Palio is run, before sunset, more or less at 19. In these tests, each Contrada takes his horse in the Plaza del Campo, accompanied by many people. Afterwards, the whole square is closed and the route is released, so that the horses can do their exercise, simulating the Palio.

Day 2 (6/30 or 8/14):

In the morning, the second test is run, at 9; in the afternoon the third. This afternoon, before the test, the candlelight procession takes place, carried by the Palio (which, in addition to being the name of the route, is a decorated cloth that is won at the end), in the church of Santa María in Provenzano ( in the July competition) or in the duomo (in the August competition).

Day 3 (1/7 or 15/8):

In the morning, the fourth test is run, in the afternoon the fifth. After this test, in the open air in each neighborhood’s squares or streets (which is why they are closed or pedestrianized), the General Test dinner is held. Tourists can also participate in these dinners, but they have to book days before with the society of the Contrada chosen for the dinner. The people of Siena believe that luck has to be brought about in any way … and drinking, eating and singing in company … is considered one of the best means!

Day 4 (2/7 or 16/8):

In the morning the sixth and last test, called the “Provaccia”, is run in the Plaza del Campo, preceded by the Mass of the Fantino in the square. the function is held in the exterior chapel of the Communal Palace, previously to the captains and riders who participate in the Palio.

Early in the afternoon, in each participating neighborhood’s church, the horse and rider are blessed by a priest during a simple but very exciting ceremony. The churches are quite small and of course, first of all, the inhabitants of the contradas enter them; but if they fit – and if they get permission – tourists can also be admitted. but they have to remember that this is a very delicate moment and that is why they have to be in total silence and not take photos.

From this moment, the wait for the Palio begins, signaled by the ringing of the bells of the Torre del Mangia, the tower located in the Plaza del Campo. Each inhabitant lives these hours with trepidation, and each one makes his spell gestures.

Immediately afterwards, the extras from each neighborhood in their typical costumes (made of silk and velvet, embroidered and adorned with pearls) go to the Palacio de la Prefectura – near the Duomo – from where the Historic Corteo departs at 4 o’clock. The tour of the court and the entire exhibition take about 3 hours, passing through the Patio de la Prefectura, Plaza del Duomo, Calle del Capitán, Calle de San Pedro, Casato di Sopra and Casato di Sotto.

Tourists can attend the corteo, but they have to stay on the side of the roads, as the streets are quite narrow and there are many people.

As soon as the Historic Corteo finished (more or less at 7 pm), the outbreak of a triquitraque signals the horse riders’ departure from the “Corte del Podestà”, near the Communal Palace. Each rider is assigned an ox whip, with which he can incite his horse during the canopy and also hinder the opponents. Then the riders approach the place where the competition is going to start, called the “mossa”: 2 ropes are stretched here that serve to align the horses. Entry into this space is also established by lot and is secret until the last minute. The tenth and last contracted instead is “di rincorsa”, that is, it will enter when it deems it most appropriate, deciding with its gesture the start of the competition. This is the most exciting moment that everyone is watching closely; it can last a few minutes,

If the “mossiere” (the person who controls the Palio) considers the start valid, the competition begins; if not, another blast of whiskers will stop the horses.

 The route consists of 3 laps of the track along the square, for more or less 1000 meters, and only the first horse will win; when he passes in front of a small flag, another blast of triquitraque signals the end of the competition. Be careful that the one that wins is the horse, so in the end the only animal can win without the rider (in this case the animal is called “scosso”).

One component that can change all the Palio’s 4-day plans is, of course the rain. If it rains during the competition tests, and the track is not considered suitable, the tests are not done, and a green flag is displayed on the facade of the Communal Palace to warn the population. 

Canceled events will not be recovered so that the final competition may be reached without even one event. Also, if it rains on the day of the Palio, the competition will not take place, especially to guarantee the safety of the horses and fans; Once again, the green signal flag will be placed in the Palace, and the Palio will be organized for the following day.

What happens after the victory of the Palio of Siena:

As soon as the canopy is finished, the celebrations begin immediately. The inhabitants of the winning neighborhood receive the Palio (the decorated cloth), and with it they go to the church of Santa Maria in Provenzano (in July) or to the duomo (in August), to thank the Madonna singing the Te Deum .

The Palio is then carried to the winning Contrada and from there throughout the city, accompanying it with songs, flags and drums. From this moment on, any moment is taken to commemorate the victory to the entire city of Siena, until autumn, when (between September and October) the “Victory Dinner” will be held in the neighborhood decorated for festivities … with the winning horse as guest of honor, of course!

It should be remembered that the day after the competition, the flag of the winning neighborhood is displayed from the Communal Palace, in the Plaza del Campo.

Some tips to experience the Palio of Siena

For tourists, the best way to know and understand the Palio of Siena is to experience it from the inside, scheduling a stay of at least 4 days, participating in the programming and life of the neighborhoods.  

You can also take the opportunity to get to know the wonderful towns and cities around, such as Montepulciano, Pienza, or Montalcino, among others.

If you plan to go to Siena for just one day, the day of the Palio, it is better to change your mind, hotels and restaurants will be full for a long time … and surely you will see better on television, having less stress! Sure the party is very exciting, but there are thousands of people in a quite small city and has narrow streets.

Any tourist attending the Palio will say that everything is noise, madness and frenzy. In any case, it is only legend that in their “madness” the inhabitants come to fight with tourists!

Of course, it must be remembered that these are holidays and great tension for the inhabitants of Siena, so better be careful, and not approach the horses in any way. The inhabitants are jealous of their traditions and want everyone to respect them, but they welcome people who want to come to the festival and understand it deeply. Therefore, they are willing to open their neighborhoods and museums to tourists (in addition to their canteens and kitchens, with excellent typical Tuscan products!).

 First of all, you cannot attend the Palio without participating because of one of the 10 contradas that run, be it for reasons of sympathy, preferably for the colors or the songs of a particular neighborhood … or other reasons! The few people who remain neutral will be branded “diciassettini,” a word of slightly derogatory value.

To attend the Palio, surely the most exciting place is the center of the Plaza del Campo, next to the people of Siena … you don’t see much, but you don’t have to pay any entrance fee, and the atmosphere is unique! If, on the other hand, you want to see the competition from the boxes, the terraces or the windows of the square, you have to pay. There is no reservation center, so you have to contact the owners directly to find out the price and make a reservation (although it is very difficult to find a seat!).

It is advisable to reach the square at least half an hour before the Historic Court, around 16:00. Therefore, you have to wait in the crowd for about 3 hours … and it is very hot being in summer! You cannot bring chairs to sit on, and once entered, it is quite problematic to get out if necessary. To alleviate the heat, some vendors sell drinks, but beware that afterwards there is no toilet! 

For all these reasons – especially because of the number of people – it is not advisable to take children to the plaza during the Palio; Furthermore, they cannot be carried on the shoulders because it would obstruct the vision of other people.

Before the Historic Court, you can enter the Plaza from any access. After the court and until a few minutes before the start of the competition, you can enter through Calle Dupré: be careful, it is a fairly narrow passage, and many people use it.

One last tip: being in the square with the people of Siena, be careful what is said there! The operation of the “mossa” that marks the beginning may take a long time… 

but it should not be protested! And at the end of it all, be careful also to the vitality of the people and the horses that can continue to run alone, without guides.

Attention to horses:

Often the Palio of Siena generates strong opposition and controversy as the animals during the competition can fall, crash against the protections of the route or against others, or even be trampled. For these reasons, many speak of violence and cruelty towards these horses.

In any case, it must be remembered that the inhabitants of Siena have a true love for these animals, that they take care of themselves in every possible way. The stables look like salons, and some people sleep or live with the horses. These attentions are not limited to the holidays, nor to the period in which the horse can run: there is a boarding school created for these animals, where they can grow old and receive visits

How to get to Siena:

You can reach Siena by train: from Florence you can take a regional train (it takes an hour and a half); from Rome you can take a regional train to Chiusi, and from there change and take another regional train to Siena (total trip: 4 and a half hours).

It can be reached by bus from Florence or Rome.

It can be reached by car. Take the A1 motorway: from the north exit at “Florencia Certosa”, and from there take the Florence-Siena state road; from the south, exit at “Valdichiana” and from there take the Bettolle-Siena road….
