Greenwich
Everyone knows that you can’t really see much in Greenwich United Kingdom, UK until you get past the town of Greenwich. However, if you know where to look and have a little patience, you will be rewarded with some truly magical spots. Greenwich is home to a number of beautiful historical buildings and interesting places, but there are also some hidden gems that most people don’t know about. Check this out
St Mary’s Church, Old Greenwich St Mary’s Church is an ancient church in Old Greenwich, London, England. It is a Grade I listed building and a notable example of Tudor architecture. St Mary’s Church is the only remaining medieval church in Greenwich. The church is set on a hill overlooking the River Thames. It is about a mile west of the centre of London. The church was originally built during the reign of Henry the Seventh as a chapel of ease for the town’s new parish church of St Lawrence, Langdon. The church was consecrated in 1425. A few additions have been made over the centuries, but it is basically the same structure today. It is built of red brick with freestone dressings, and has two towers at the west end which are Saxon in date. Inside the church there are a number of old gravestones and monuments, including to Sir John Gresham, the founder of the Royal Exchange in London. There is a beautiful organ which is played regularly.
The Old Royal Naval College The Old Royal Naval College is a former Royal Naval College at Greenwich, now used as offices by the Royal Navy. It is situated on the Greenwich Peninsula overlooking the River Thames. The College was founded in 16 HRM (1805) by King William IV, and was opened by Queen Victoria in 1841. Its buildings were originally designed by Sir William Tallett. The College’s buildings are now home to the Admiralty Office and other Government departments, but the Old Royal Naval College and its grounds are maintained and administered by the City of London Corporation as part of London’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, of which it is part. The college is referred to colloquially as just “Greenwich” by the Royal Navy and other Government departments, even though it is located some miles west of the town centre.
Greenwich Park Greenwich Park is a 1.9 hectare public park located in the East End of London, England. It is the smaller of the two parks within the Greenwich Area of the London Borough of Greenwich. It is located between the River Thames and the North Orbital Road/A2/M2 motorway. It is managed by the London Borough of Greenwich. The park is situated on the southern side of the Greenwich peninsula. It is bordered by the River Thames to the south, and the North Orbital Road/A2/M2 motorway to the north. To the east is the A102 Western Avenue, to the west is the A2 and to the south are the railway tracks of the London and Greenwich Railway and the Millennium Dome site. The park contains playing fields, a riverside walk, a café and a boat house. The park is popular with walkers, joggers, dog walkers and cyclists.
Thomas Wright House Thomas Wright House is a Georgian house in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, London. It is located on Thomas Wright Place in the Old Royal Naval College. It is Grade II listed and is now used as offices by the Royal Navy. The house was built in 1727 for Thomas Wright, Clerk of the Navy, and was one of the earliest buildings on the Greenwich Peninsula. It was designed by William Tallett. The house is built of red brick with freestone dressings, including a pillared and panelled portico, and a fanlight in the Saloon.
The View from the Cutty Sark The View from the Cutty Sark is a viewpoint located on an embankment adjacent to the Cutty Sark, Greenwich. The Cutty Sark, a British passenger ship that was the last of her kind, was built in the 19th century and served as a convoy escort during World War II. The Cutty Sark is now a museum, although it is still open to the public. The embankment adjacent to the Cutty Sark is now a popular viewpoint and a popular spot for wedding photographs. The embankment is also a popular spot for photographers on public holidays, especially during the summer months. The viewpoint is located in Greenwich Park, which is located in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and is the largest park in London.
Conclusion Greenwich is a beautiful place with plenty of history and a few hidden spots that are well worth exploring. We have highlighted the best spots in Greenwich United Kingdom, UK to help you get a better sense of the town. Depending on your interests, you will be able to see some of the historical buildings or enjoy some of the natural beauty of the area. Chicago West Side Art Deco Architecture
Looking to bring new development to the long-overlooked West and South sides of Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot recently announced two winning proposals for the Austin neighborhood on the West Side and for Auburn Gresham and Englewood neighborhoods on the South Side. The Austin project will include a renovation of the former Citizens Bank (aka Laramie Bank), a beautiful Art Deco building at the corner of Laramie and Chicago avenues. The $37.5 million project will renovate the 20,000 square foot building for commercial use (bank branch, café, etc.) and will also house a Blues museum. I am speculating that maybe this Blues museum will be focused on the history of the West Side Blues which has largely been ignored and overshadowed by the famous Blues history of the South Side. On the land adjacent to the building, the plan is to build a multistory apartment building with a public plaza, green roof, and outdoor art.
While growing up in the Austin neighborhood, the Citizens Bank building was about a mile from my house. It was where my dad did his banking as he had grown up two blocks away. My buddy Chris and I would often go to that bank with my dad so that we could buy rolls of pennies with our paper route money. We would check each penny for valuable finds that we could add to our coin collection. The bulk, of course, would be rejects, so we would re-wrap them into fifty-cent rolls and cash them in at the bank or at a local retailer such as a grocer. (This was in the mid-60’s when pennies were still an integral part of American cash-based economy.)
The bank building was built in 1928 (when my dad was 6) and opened as the Laramie State Bank but closed two years later in 1930. It was intermittently used as an office building until 1946 when it became Citizens Bank. The bank survived until 1991 when it was declared insolvent. In 1995, the building was designated as a Chicago landmark. It continued to serve in various capacities including a banquet hall, furniture store and deli. Since the foreclosure of the building in 2012, it has been vacant and at risk of falling into total disrepair. It will be wonderful to see this proposed development breathe new life into the old structure.
Banks in the 19th and early 20th centuries were built to look stately and secure so that you knew your money would be safe and have the opportunity to grow. With its detailed Art Deco exterior, this bank building took that concept further. As you look across the columns and façade, you see coins of United States currency, letting you know that this is a good place to keep your money. To reinforce that concept, there are owls to let you know that you are wise to keep your money in this bank. The laborers are there to remind you that you work hard for your money and you want to be sure it is kept safe and sound. The squirrels suggest that just as they store the nuts they gather to be used when needed, you can do the same with the dollars you gather to assure your future. The bees and their hives perhaps suggest the sweet life you can live if you work hard and save your money at the bank. While I always remember being impressed by the building as a kid, I do not recall if Chris and I spent any time studying or even noticing the detail of the Art Deco exterior. Fortunately, others have noticed and are doing their best to keep this beautiful building alive and well.

The Widow’s best of 2020
Well… during a year when we haven’t been able to see many live shows we’ve still managed to find lots of things we loved. Here are some of them; live shows are indicated, otherwise we watched them online – our grateful thanks go to all the companies that streamed their productions for free – listened to them or read them. You’ll notice that our list includes lots of women and the occasional man.
Tumblr media
But before that we start with a new category…
PERSON OF THE YEAR: Circus director Carol Gandey (pictured) of Gandeys Circus. If UK touring circus – an artform championed by The Widow’s Liz Arratoon for more than 25 years – is to survive Covid-19, it will be in large part to her. Gandeys had produced three shows before the UK’s March lockdown, two of which never had a chance to open, incurring hundreds of thousands of pounds in costs. It then provided accommodation and living expenses for 33 stranded artists, and meanwhile developed an air-flow working model for circus – trialling an opening at Butlins – which gave the government enough confidence to allow circuses to reopen with reduced seating capacities.
Carol constantly lobbied the government and the Arts Council for aid – as did other industry figures – and her application to the Arts Council Recovery Fund, which was said to be exceptional, resulted in a £1.1 million grant; the largest amount awarded to any UK circus company. Gandeys used some of the money to cover the losses due to the lockdown, and to fund a survival package that included some reduced-capacity performances this autumn, as well as funding the production costs for reopening in 2021.
From one strong and inspirational woman to another…
Tumblr media
BEST EXTRAVAGANZA: Rhianna’s Savage X Fenty Volume 2 TV special for her lingerie range. Wow! What a mix! This was an explosion of creativity; part fashion show, part dance show, part gig, part circus, part ad, and included a simply stunning floral set. Add a cast of big names, a wonderfully diverse choice of dancers and models, no expense had been spared. Exciting, fresh and really impressive.
BEST LIVE SHOW: Zebra, a solo show by juggling genius Wes Peden, which was part of the London International Mime Festival at the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room.
Tumblr media
BEST CIRCUS SHOW: The really inventive CAPAS by Circo Eia (pictured) – so great to see so many new ideas, and here’s our chat with cast member Francesca Lissia. Plus the intricate and dazzling Twenty Twenty by Gandini Juggling.
Tumblr media
BEST DANCE SHOW: Faust by the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, featuring the spectral Bernice Coppieters (pictured) as Death; and Cia de Dança Deborah Colker’s super-stylish Belle, inspired by the novel Belle de Jour.
Tumblr media
BEST KIDS’ SHOW: Little Angel Theatre’s hat trilogy, presented by puppeteer Ian Nicholson; an adaptation of the picture books by Jon Klassen: I Want My Hat Back, This Is Not My Hat and We Found a Hat.
Tumblr media
BEST COSTUME: The Widow has always considered costumes to be extremely important. As Federico Fellini said: “Don’t forget that costumes, like dreams, are symbolic communication,” and frankly we wish more artists would make the sort of effort Dua Lipa made on Saturday Night Live!
Tumblr media
Staying with costumes… slightly less glamorous, but an effort was made by Hot Mess in party-sketch work-in-progress Dirty Stop Outs.
MOST EXCITING: Meeting Marina Abramović in the foyer at London’s Barbican before the Efterklang gig.
Tumblr media
BEST SHOWGIRLS: Seen in the 1972 film Un Flic; costumes by Colette Baudot. Also featured is a stunning black dress, worn by Catherine Deneuve, designed by Yves Saint Laurent.
Tumblr media
BEST BURLESQUE: Lady of Burlesque, starring Barbara Stanwyck, who wears costumes by the great Edith Head.
Tumblr media
BEST FILM CREDITS: Sudden Fear, starring Joan Crawford as a scorned – but impeccably dressed – woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown!
BEST CASTAWAY: Hard to choose between Rupert Everett, Ian Wright or Daniel Radcliffe, who all washed up on BBC Radio 4′s Desert Island Discs.
Tumblr media
BEST SHOWBIZ STORY: Catherine Russell – on Outlook, BBC Radio 4 – who has played the same role for 32 years and said the same lines more than 13,000 times. She holds the world record for the most theatre performances in the same role; Margaret Thorne Brent – a psychiatrist who might also be a cold-blooded killer – in the off-Broadway play Perfect Crime.
Tumblr media
BEST TV SERIES: It was a close call with The Queen’s Gambit, but our choice is the utterly brilliant My Brilliant Friend; the adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s series of Neapolitan novels.
BEST DOCUMENTARY: The Bee Gees – How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.
Tumblr media
BEST CABARET PIC: The ever-lovely Eve Ferret at the Crazy Coqs in London. Picture: @marc_t_albert
BEST SHOWBIZ MEMOIR: John Cooper Clarke’s I Wanna Be Yours.
Tumblr media
BEST SHOWBIZ BIOGRAPHY: Jon Gresham: The Life and Adventures of a Sideshow Showman, Fire-Eater and Magician by Edwin A Dawes, Pat Gresham and Jon Marshall. This is a painstakingly detailed and enthralling account of Gresham’s life, lovingly compiled by his widow and friends from material written by Gresham himself. Want one? Details below.
Tumblr media
BEST SHOWBIZ AUTOBIOGRAPHY: The heartbreaking Everything and Nothing: The Dorothy Dandridge Tragedy by Dorothy Dandridge and Earl Conrad. The revealing autobiography of Hollywood’s first African-American sex symbol and screen legend.
Tumblr media
BEST GIG: Sevdaliza’s only show this year, streamed live from The Hague's Koninklijke Schouwburg (Royal Theatre) to a global audience.
BEST SONG: Désormais by Charles Aznavour, which was used as the title track for the film Chambre 212 or On a Magical Night.
Tumblr media
BEST ALBUM COVER: Charles Aznavour’s Désormais. That hat!
MOST CHARMING: The sheep invasion during Isabella Rossellini’s show Sex and Consequences, which was streamed live from her farm in Bellport, Long Island, USA. Yes, her live sheep!
Tumblr media
BEST TWITTER CIRCUS PIC: The stunning Crystal Pyramids by Severus posted by @PablosCircus.
BEST LIVE COMEDY: Myra Dubois – star of Britain’s Got Talent – at The Poodle Club in Sydenham. Some of us recognised the greatness of Rotherham’s finest before she was famous!
Tumblr media
GONE TOO SOON: Actor Chadwick Boseman (pictured) at just 43, funnymen Eddie Large, Tim Brooke Taylor and Bobby Ball, and dancer, choreographer and actor Ann Reinking.
MOST MISSED: Davenports magic shop that closed at the end of January – but you luckily can still order from it online – and a more recent casualty, after 96 years, London’s beautiful Café de Paris.
Tumblr media
MOST DISAPPOINTING: Madonna’s Madame X show at the London Palladium. Goodness, this was shoddy! She was so incapacitated that she simply marked all the dance moves and had to be helped around the set, and up and down the stairs. The tickets were exorbitantly expensive and no one paid to see someone hobbling about onstage. We paid to see Madonna!
But let’s not end on a sour note…
Tumblr media
BEST SHOWBIZ MASK: Shirley Bassey’s fabulous sequinned number!
REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL: Some things we’re looking forward to include:  The 45th London International Mime Festival, which will be screening free-to-view videos of shows from past LIMF editions, running an extended workshop series with live and online classes, and hosting a series of talks.
We’re also awaiting the new series of Call My Agent, which starts on Netflix on 21 January 2021.
Tumblr media
And, last but by no mean least, one of the world’s truly funny clowns, Gloria – also known as Mooky Cornish – has been busy training her chickens – Kukuruzza (pictured top), who has been taking piano lessons, and the athletic Galina – and will be touring the Canadian prairies with them next summer. Now that’s something we’d love to see! Picture: Nichole Huck
Better days ahead!

Collection Report: McMenamins Brewery Collection, 1983-2015
Tumblr media
Oh my gosh, this collection has been in my backlog for YEARS! It has been so long that when my daughter helped with the inventory on the brew sheets she was 11 years-old and couldn't check herself out of summer camp [now she can drive and has taken the SAT], but she could talk with John Richen (brewing manager at the time) about her favorite beer names and things she'd noticed about ingredients.
Go straight to the guide: http://bit.ly/mss_mcmenamins
Learn more about the Oregon brewing industry in my Oregon Encyclopedia article
The McMenamins Brewery Collection is, truly, a gem. We scanned thousands of brew sheets, which is a part of the magic, but I'm also delighted by all the fun ephemera, including a full run of their coasters. I'll also add that the company biography included in this guide is really a love letter to the company, and I thank Fred Eckhardt, John Foyston, and all the other journalists over the past 30 years for recording all the fun quirks about this company.
SUMMARY McMenamins is a family-owned chain of brewpubs, breweries, historic hotels, and theater pubs in the Pacific Northwest.
The McMenamins Brewery Collection includes digitized brew sheets, digital images, brochures, coasters, decals, event programs, flyers, newspaper clippings, tap handles, posters, labels, a wooden cask, and a six-pack of Hammerhead beer.
COMPANY BIO
Tumblr media
McMenamins is a family-owned chain of brewpubs, breweries, historic hotels, and theater pubs in the Pacific Northwest. It was founded by brothers Mike and Brian McMenamin, who grew up in Northeast Portland. In 2021, they operated 56 properties, with twelve hotels; dozens of breweries, pubs, and restaurants; movie theaters; spas; music venues; and a coffee roaster, winery, cidery and distillery. Many locations are rehabilitated historical buildings and at least nine are on the National Register of Historic Places. McMenamins only sells its beer in its own pubs, restaurants, hotels, and movie theaters.
Early businesses
Mike and Brian McMenamin both graduated from Oregon State University, Mike with a Political Science degree (1974) and Brian with a Business degree (1980). Mike and two college friends purchased the Produce Row Café, a bar known for all-night, high-stakes poker games, in Portland's warehouse district in 1974 and sold more than 100 types of beer. The building was built in 1951 and opened as a breakfast café for produce dockworkers in 1953; in later years, it was a barbershop. Mike and Brian bought Bogart's Joint, another Portland-area pub on 14th and Flanders. At various points in history, many beer-related activities occurred in this building: Kurt and Rob Widmer brewed in this location, and it was later space occupied by Portland Brewing and Rogue Ales Public House. By 1980, they'd sold Produce Row, Bogart's Joint, and a third tavern, the Stockyard Café.
Mike opened a wine distributorship and Brian opened the McMenamins Pub in Hillsboro. By 1983, Mike’s distributorship had failed, and the brothers decided to try the bar business again. Rather than the smoky, male-dominated taverns common in Portland, they were inspired by the community hubs they’d seen in Europe. They bought the Fat Little Rooster tavern on Southeast Hawthorne and renamed it the Barley Mill Pub; in addition to a varied beer selection, the pub was known for Grateful Dead memorabilia and anniversary parties. The namesake “barley mill,” which can still be found onsite, was used by Chuck Coury at Cartwright Brewing Co., Portland’s first post-Prohibition brewery. It was originally a kitty litter grinder but is now used annually to grind the grain for anniversary ales.
One major event that impacted the trajectory of the beer industry in Oregon in the 1980s was legislation that married production and sales. Fred Bowman and Art Larrance (Portland Brewing), Dick and Nancy Ponzis (BridgePort Brewing) and their brewer Karl Ockert, Kurt and Rob Widmer (Widmer Brothers Brewing), and the McMenamins lobbied to legalize on-site sales. On July 13, 1985, Governor Vic Atiyeh signed Senate Bill 813, the “Brewpub Bill,” into law. It allowed brewers to make and sell beer on the same premises, key for increasing revenue and gaining new customers.
First brewpubs
The McMenamins took advantage of the new law, and by the early 1990s had opened several brewpubs, each with its own small brewing system attached. They opened the Hillsdale Brewery and Public House October 31, 1985 in the Southwest Portland neighborhood of Hillsdale. Not only was it their first brewery, it was also the first brewpub in Oregon since Prohibition. Known as “Captain Neon's Fermentation Chamber,” a nod to Mike McMenamin’s nickname, the first several batches of beer were brewed with old Tillamook dairy equipment. On October 25, 1985, Hillsdale's first brewer Ron Wolf, who had previously worked at Anchor Steam, brewed the first beer in a small copper kettle and called it "Hillsdale Ale.” It fell loosely into the “Special Bitter” classification of beer styles and was a malt extract brew. Hillsdale Ale was brewed 29 times at the Hillsdale location and 14 times at Cornelius Pass Roadhouse between 10/25/1985 and 11/28/1986. In the first year, several brewers moved through the facility and made Hillsdale Ale, including Ron Wolf (who only brewed 13 batches before leaving), Conrad Santos (who replaced Wolf as brew master), Mike McMenamin, Brian McMenamin, John Harris, Scott Barrow, and Alex Farnham (the company’s first female brewer).
In 1986, they purchased a 125-year-old farmhouse in Hillsboro, Oregon, and turned it into the Cornelius Pass Roadhouse. Later that same year, they opened the Lighthouse Brewpub in Lincoln City. The Fulton Pub and Brewery opened in Portland in June 1988 and the Highland Pub and Brewery opened in Gresham in July 1988.
Eventually, 27 breweries would operate under the McMenamins umbrella and they became a training ground for new brewers, many of whom have gone on to found breweries of their own. Alumni include John Harris (Hillsdale, Cornelius Pass Roadhouse), Jack Harris (Cornelius Pass Roadhouse, Lighthouse Brewery), Jason McAdam (Edgefield, Hillsdale, Crystal Ballroom), Alex McGaw (Fulton, Crystal Ballroom), Ben Nehrling and Kevin Lee (Edgefield, Highland, Kennedy School), and Mark Goodwin (Old Church, Crystal Ballroom).
In addition to serving beer at their brewpubs, the company also hosted festivals, concerts, and other public programming events at their properties, including Dad Watson’s Brew Fest, Edgefield Brew Fest, Highland Pub and Brewery Eurofest, Hillsdale Brew Fest, Lighthouse Brew Fest, Mid-Valley Brew Fest, and the Thompson Barley Cup.
Beer and Other Beverages
The McMenamins’ beers could be unsettling to brewing traditionalists; they used ingredients like apples, spices, and candy bars, as well as lesser used malts like Chocolate and Crystal. They introduced fruit beers to Oregon and early batches featured blackberries from the Hillsdale brewpub parking lot. Hand in hand with their experimentation, McMenamins developed three core beers that are brewed at all their breweries. Terminator Stout (1985) is a dark, English-style brew; Ruby (1986) is a light, raspberry-flavored beer; and Hammer Head (1986) is a classic Northwest Pale Ale. Ruby and Hammerhead are iconic company characters as well; artist Lyle Hehn created Ruby Witch and Hammerhead, and both are staples of murals, posters, and coasters.
Terminator Stout made its debut in 1985 at the Hillsdale Brewery & Public House as the 12th beer brewed. Old Hammerhead, as the strong ale was first called, was brewed January 25, 1986 and was the 37th brew and made with malt extract. John Harris, who later created Mirror Pond for Deschutes Brewery, was the first to make Hammerhead an “all-grain” beer. Harris was hired in 1987, and when they transitioned away from extract brewing, he decided to rewrite the Hammerhead recipe; besides changed the grain, he also added more hops. Ruby, originally called “Ruby Tuesday” before the food chain objected, was first brewed in 1986 and used 42 pounds of pureed Oregon raspberries.
The company made more than beer. They planted 3 acres of Pinot Gris fruit in 1990 and looked to regional vineyards for additional grapes; McMenamins Edgefield Winery was established in 1992 and began by making Rhone-style wines, including grenache and viognier. The Edgefield Winery produces 20 different white, rosé, dessert, and sparkling wines and supplies 350 tons of wine to McMenamins pubs. Also in 1992, and predating the boom by more than 20 years, McMenamins started making cider at the winery and in 2018 sold as much cider by volume as wine.
In 1995, they began experiments with distillation and made brandy under contract by Carneros Alembic, a California distillery owned by Remy-Martin. In 1997, they built their first distillery in an old root vegetable storage barn on the Edgefield property. Their most popular whiskey is Hogshead, but they make several others, including Money Puzzle, which is dry hopped with Teamaker hops (which has 0 IBUs) and is sweetened with blackberry honey harvest from hives on their property.
Historic preservation
The brothers’ love of historic structures directed business growth and community involvement, and preserving important historical buildings is integral to their business. When the McMenamins started, they couldn’t afford new construction, so they purchased old buildings, which came with stories. They employ a small staff of historians to research and document the history, and those are in turn incorporated into each property’s art, murals, menus, place names, and architectural details.
In 1987, the company opened its first theater, the Mission Theater Pub, in downtown Portland. The converted 1890s Swedish Tabernacle, a church-turned-union hall, was also the state's first theater pub. In 1991, McMenamins turned a 1927 art deco theater that was slated for demolition into a second pub and movie house. These businesses were significant and ushered in a new way to watch movies with beer and food.
In 1987, the brothers purchased Edgefield, which was built in 1911 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They paid $560,000 and invested another $2.5 million to transform the farm's 80-year-old buildings into a multi-utility complex. Edgefield was once the Multnomah County Poor Farm, a self-sufficient facility with a meatpacking plant, power station, large rooming house, and infirmary. When the remodeled Edgefield Manor opened in 1991, the meatpacking plant was a brewery, power station a pub with a movie theater, infirmary a winery, and rooming house a 100-room hotel. There was also a meeting space, catering operation, restaurant called the Black Rabbit, herb and flower gardens, four liquor and cigar bars, distillery, golf course, and amphitheater. One of the more outstanding features of Edgefield, and something that would become the McMenamins' signature, was the extensive art installations created by local artists. Art popped up in surprising places throughout the complex (on ceilings, exposed heating pipes, eaves, fuse boxes) and showed local subjects (former residents, Northwest Indians, 19th-century brewers, the Columbia River Gorge). Within a few years, the company had a set of 12 freelance artists ready to work on new property acquisitions. Edgefield brewery is still the company's largest property.
In 1997, they purchased the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, which had been vacant for 30 years, and filled it with murals depicting the building's history, a brewpub, and a bar. The building was famous for its swaying dance floor, which sat on ball bearings. The Crystal Hotel was built in 1911 and became a dance hall and concert facility that hosted national music acts. Around the same time, they partnered with the Portland Development Commission and invested $4.5 million to remodel the Kennedy Elementary School. What was once a boarded-up building was transformed into a 35-room multi-use hotel with an onsite brewery, restaurant and four bars, a movie theater, a jazz hall, cigar bar, and soaking pool.
In 1999, the McMenamins opened McMenamins Hotel Oregon in downtown McMinnville, Oregon. The building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places and had been a hotel since its first two stories were erected in 1905; five years later, two more floors were added. In 1932, the hotel was renamed Hotel Oregon. In addition to renovating guest rooms, the McMenamins renovation added two bars and an art gallery with old photographs and new paintings that showed the history of the hotel and McMinnville.
Many property renovations followed. In 2000, they opened the Grand Lodge in Forest Grove, Oregon, which was formerly a Masonic home built in 1922. In 2001, they opened the 27 room Olympic Club Hotel and Theater, which was an expansion of the McMenamins Olympic Club Pub in downtown Centralia, Washington. The original Oxford Hotel was built in 1908 and Olympic Club was built in 1913. In 2003, they reopened the Rock Creek Tavern in Hillsboro, Oregon, which they had purchased in 1995 when the original tavern burned down. In 2016, the Anderson School in Bothell, Washington opened. The original Anderson School was built in 1931 and opened in 1936. In April of 2018, McMenamins opened their latest project, the Kalama Harbor Lodge in Kalama, Washington. Other properties include the White Eagle Saloon & Hotel in Portland, which was built in 1905; Boon’s Treasury in Salem, built in the 1860s; and Old St. Francis School in Bend, which opened in 1936.

Osterley Park and House
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Osterley Park and House is located in the small town of Isleworth in London, England. The neo-classical mansion was originally a Tudor house built in 1575 by Sir Thomas Gresham. Banker, Sir Francis Child purchased the property in 1713 to serve as a symbol of his wealth and status. His namesake and grandson hired architect Robert Adam to remodel and transform the palace into what it is today. The 140 acre estate was gifted by Lord Jersey in 1949 to the National Trust. The furniture was sold to the Victoria and Albert museum. The National Trust took full ownership in 1991. During its history, the estate served as a training ground for Local Defense Volunteers, and combat and camouflage techniques were also taught on the grounds in the 1940s. The school, Disapproved of by the War Office and Winston Churchill, was closed in 1941 and the staff and courses were relocated. The interior of Osterley House is decorated with friezes, stucco walls, and gilt. There is a grand entrance hall, a tapestry room, a long gallery, a dining room, a library, a state bedchamber, and State apartments with an Etruscan dressing room. Below stairs, on the ground floor are the servants’ hall, the steward’s room, and the kitchen. The palace has a portico, a courtyard, 135 gardens, a pond, a garden room, and The Temple of Pan, honoring the Greek god of hunting and the companion of the nymphs. Osterley Park and House are open to the public. The estate has bike rentals, a children’s playtrail, a café, a shop, and a second-hand bookshop.

Is Joseph Campbell Bossing Me Around?
OR IS HE EXPLAINING WHAT MAKES A GOOD STORY? By K.P. Gresham
Writers (at least me) despise the idea of formulaic writing. I am creative! I have my own ideas! Ain’t nobody gonna tell me how to write!
But what if this “formula” came from inside ourselves? What if I create it in my thoughts, my actions, my psyche? What if this “formula” is actually an internal pattern shared by all humans?
Joseph Campbell was a pattern finder. As he studied different cultures, different mythologies, different religions, he developed his theory that the journey of the archetypal hero is at the very soul of what makes us human. He called it the “Monomyth” and, drawing on Carl Jung’s theories, he proposed that a psychic unity is shared by all humankind, and that our lives AND stories are all mythic narratives as variations of a single great story.
Boulderdash, my creative spirit cries! But…shoving hubris aside, what does the evidence show?
Okay. Enough of Campbell. I’m not smart enough or deep enough to even begin to understand the intricacies of his studies or theories. So I did what most of us do. I looked for someone who could “explain it to me.”
Tumblr media
For me, those answers came from reading Chris Vogler’s The Writers Journey. Vogler breaks down this inner self-generated pattern of how humans think and act into twelve understandable, progressive steps.
Step One-The Hero’s Ordinary World (Everyday Life Before the Insanity Begins) Example: Dorothy’s life in Kansas before the tornado tosses her into the land of Oz.
Step Two-The Hero’s Call to Adventure (Introduction of Something that Must Happen) Example: Bilbo Baggins appalling invitation to go with the dwarves to reclaim their treasure in The Hobbit.
Step Three-Refusal of the Call (Ain’t No Way I’m Gonna…) Example: Humphrey Bogart doesn’t want to take Kathryn Hepburn on The African Queen.
Step Four-Meeting with the Mentor (Somebody help!) Example: Robert Redford getting Paul Newman to help him get even with a murdering crime boss in The Sting.
Step Five-Crossing the First Threshold (Taking that first step on the new journey.) Example: Alec Baldwin jumps from a helicopter to help find Sean Connery’s Russian sub, The Red October.
Step Six- Tests, Allies and Enemies (Life Happens) Example: In Casablanca, Rick’s Café is fraught with desperate refugees, thieves, spies and intrigue.
Step Seven-Approach to the Inmost Cave (Facing Your Worst Fear) Example: In The Matrix, the Oracle tells Neo that either Neo or Morpheus must die, and Neo has the power to choose which goes.
Step Eight-The Ordeal (Your fight within the belly of the beast.) Example:  In The Odyssey, Odysseus is almost killed when he is forced to go to the underworld to find the way home.
Step Nine-Reward (Hero Achieves Goal) Example: In The Sting, Robert Redford and Paul Newman pull off their revenge on Robert Shaw and escape the law.
Step Ten-The Road Back (Trouble’s Not Quite Over) Example: Harry Potter’s walk on Hogwart’s Bridge to destroy in the Elder Wand in Deathly Hallows II.
Step Eleven-Resurrection (Death and Darkness Get One More Shot Before Their Destruction) Example: In Back to the Future, Marty McFly witnesses the Professor getting killed (again). (Don’t worry, he was wearing a bullet proof vest!)
Step Twelve: Hero Returns to Real World with Elixir. (Back at Home, but You’re Not the Same Person You Were When You Left.) Example: Dorothy goes home to Kansas knowing that she loves and is loved by her family.
Now folks have taken these 12 steps and created beat sheets (I’m referring specifically to Blake Snyder’s Save the Cat! fifteen step beat sheet), diagrams, pie charts, whatever. But the basic monomyth theory is the same: a hero’s journey. Formulaic? Perhaps. Or maybe a pattern observed in the psychic unity of mankind. Is this something foisted upon us or something that originates from the very core that makes us human?
High brow questions for a low brow thinker. All I know is I love a good story.

Moteefe, the e-commerce platform for on-demand merchandise, raises $5M Series A
Moteefe, the e-commerce platform for on-demand production of merchandise has raised $5 million in Series A funding.
Leading the round is Gresham House, and Force Over Mass Capital. It brings total funding to date to $12.5 million, and will be used to expand into new geographies including Australia and LATAM. The U.K. company also plans to launch new products for large retailers and invest in scaling its operations.
Launched in early 2016, Moteefe provides an “end-to-end” technology solution for entrepreneurs, influencers, and (micro) retailers wanting to design, create and sell customised products, such as printed t-shirts or engraved jewellery. The platform enables brands to design merchandise and sell it via their own white-labelled Moteefe store, or through their own site or app or other marketing channels.
Put simply, you upload your design to the Moteefe site and the company takes care of printing, the store, payments, customer service and fulfilment globally. Moteefe then takes a small commission on sales. However, unlike some traditional marketplaces, users can launch their own store with their own domain, maintaining the customer relationship and data.
“Launching and scaling a global e-commerce business is extremely complex and requires access to a wide variety of capabilities,” says co-founder and CEO Mathijs Eefting. “We provide a complete end-to-end solution that takes care of everything from e-commerce sites and payments up to (on-demand) production, fulfilment, and support at global scale. Everyone can start and scale their own business globally within a matter of minutes, [with] no upfront costs or inventory risk”.
Eefting says that at the heart of Moteefe’s offering is on-demand production. Typically referred to as Print-on-Demand (POD), the company works also with a range of other production methods via its network. “Since POD is difficult to implement — it requires completely different back-end and front-end processes — we have built an interface that allows anyone to leverage the functionality and start building/growing their own retail brands around the world within minutes for free”.
This has seen Moteefe build its own proprietary production software that instantaneously centralises orders via merchant sites. It then routes those orders on a per order basis directly into the production lines of its partners.
“It takes into consideration end-consumer location, partner inventory levels, capacity, quality and costs,” explains Eefting. “This enables us to deliver 10,000s of products on a daily basis anywhere in the world with a 1-2-day turnaround time”.
On competitors, the Moteefe CEO reiterates that the company isn’t a marketplace like Teespring, Red Bubble, Zazzle, or Café Press, which he says are leveraged mainly by creatives and designers uploading their own artwork onto the marketplace, and earning a small commission when someone purchases a product with their design. “They are not building a business, they’re simply monetising their creativity,” he explains.
Instead, Eefting says Moteefe is empowering brands and companies to take advantage of global on-demand production. “Our users own their brand, client relationship and marketing channels –- we provide the white label store and fulfilment technology”, he adds.

Danube Promenade Budapest The Danube Promenade or Dunacorso is walking path on the Pest side of Budapest, which extends from the Chainbridge to the Elizabeth bridge. This location was always popular for promenading, especially in the 19th century. The buildings here first were destroyed during the Big FLood in 1838, and ten years later in the Revolution and Freddom Fight of 1848-49, which was fought by Hungarians against the Austrian Empire for independence. A row of hotels on the bank of the Danube began to be built in 1867: these were the Hungaria, Bristol, Carlton, and Ritz . Their cafés, overlooking the Danube and the Buda Castle were immensely popular. In 1945 at the end of World War II, only the Bristol survived the destruction of the row of hotels on the bank of the Danube, but in 1969 the final form of the Bristol Hotel was demolished too. Today there are modern hotels stand at Dunacorso, which a pleasant walkway. The new row of luxury hotels attempts to recreate the pre-war ambiance. From here the Downtown of the city and the Saint Stephen Basilica can be reached in 3 minutes, here is the famous Gresham Palace, the Vigadó Concert Hall, and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences too. Numerous public statues – statues of Count Istvan Szechenyi, Joseph Eötvös, Gyula Deák, Sándor Petöfi and Mihaly Vörösmarty – were erected here at the end of the 19th century, while in the 20th century the Dunacorso was decorated with some modern creations, as statue of William Shakespeare and the famous Little Princess. Every December Christmas trams decorated with hundreds of lights run along the Danube Promenade, on route 2A, which’s track was selected several times to the one of the most beautiful tramlines of the world.
