Calacus Weekly Hit & Miss – Blackburn Rovers & The Glazers
Every week we look at the best and worst communicators in the sports world from the previous week.
HIT - BLACKBURN ROVERS
As we said last week, football clubs are pillars of the community and need to set an example both on and off the pitch.
The beautiful game is increasingly becoming more inclusive, thankfully, and barriers are being broken down. This is long overdue and there is still a long way to go, but clubs and governing bodies alike are finally helping minority communities access and feel welcome at clubs.
Blackburn Rovers are one such club who have actively looked to include everyone from all walks of life in their community.
Their latest initiative has seen them provide access to prayer space for Muslim fans to observe Maghrib Salaah during their Carabao Cup fixture against Hartlepool.
As one of the five daily prayers in the Islamic faith, Maghrib forms a crucial part of any practicing Muslim’s life, something Blackburn recognised by providing a safe and all-encompassing space for prayer to take place at Ewood Park.
Ahead of the game, the Championship club tweeted: “Muslim supporters attending our home game against @Official_HUFC this Wednesday, we understand you will need to observe Maghrib Salaah (Sunset Prayer) at 8:55pm.
“Season Ticket Holder, Hafiz Zayd will be leading the prayer at 8:55pm. Our multi-faith room in the Blackburn End won’t be available for this match only. You'll be directed to the lounge in the Jack Walker Stand if you wish to observe your Maghrib Salaah during the second half.
“All adult Muslims have to observe 5 obligatory prayers every day. For our Muslim supporters we understand observing their prayers is a necessity and we are proud to be able to have the provisions in place to provide this during any event at Ewood Park.”
The extra detail about the significance of the prayers highlights Blackburn’s will to educate non-Muslim fans, which also helps to break down barriers.
Blackburn’s Integration and Business Development manager Yasir Sufi was appointed by the club in 2020 to develop links with the Asian community. Speaking ahead of the tie against Hartlepool, he said: "One thing that we've been very proud of is the fact that we are a diverse football town, we have a diverse supporter base, and we have to be able to reach out to all of them.
"As a Muslim, when you're attending any event, you're always looking at how it affects your day-to-day religious requirements.
"So, one of the things we introduced last season was that anyone coming to any event at Ewood Park was able to take care of their namaz and salah.”
It is not the first time the football club has been lauded for finding ways to welcome local Muslims, who form around 30% of the population.
This year, Rovers made history when they became the first British club to host Eid salah on their pitch. Hundreds of people congregated at Ewood Park to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan – the club even provided complimentary travel as well as food and refreshments.
It’s not just allowing access to pray, Blackburn have a history of paving the way for inclusivity and breaking down barriers that football once had in place against its Muslim supporters.
They were the first club to accommodate their fans with a multi-faith prayer room in 2008, which was remodelled a decade later. Before then, the fans had to make do.
Rovers were awarded the EFL’s first ever diversity award back in April this year, that celebrates and recognises excellence in equality, diversity and inclusion, in recognition of their Ewood Express initiative.
They provide a bus service for children to be collected directly from their school, mosque or community group to attend home matches, ensuring 2,700 children visited Ewood Park last season that would otherwise have been unable to attend.
On top of this initiative – just two months ago – the club welcomed 67 children, aged six to eight, of South Asian heritage to their academy in a talent ID initiative with the PFA in a bid to help representation in England.
Blackburn have a legacy of inclusivity and pioneering new ways to combat discrimination through education and a whole host of initiatives to benefit their Muslim community.
Football is a game for everyone, regardless of what faith fans belong to, and Blackburn are leading the way with their efforts to make sure a huge part of their community feels welcomed and respected.
MISS – THE GLAZERS
The importance of good communication for any organisation is vital for its success.
In sport, stakeholders include the fans or followers of your club or sport so that they understand your approach and ambitions.
The Glazer family have owned arguably the biggest football club in England, Manchester United, since 2005, but rarely communicate with the fans.
In June 2005, Joel Glazer said: “Fans are the lifeblood of the club. People want to know what’s happening. We will be communicating.” They have not kept their word.
There was a growing concern that the Glazer family would not only take control of the club but also plunge it into debt, prompting supporters to protest and Shareholders United, which was set up to oppose the BSkyB takeover six years earlier, led the way once again.
By the time patriarch Malcolm Glazer had completed his hostile takeover thanks to the expensive hedge-fund loans, the club gained £660million of debt and its average annual interest payments grew to £95million, more than a third of their annual revenues.
In protest to the new ownership, some fans set up their own club, FC United of Manchester.
Thanks to the genius of manager Sir Alex Ferguson and the squad he built before the Glazers arrived, United remained competitive, but between 2005 and 2013, United’s rivals caught up with the Red Devils having a net spend of just £164m across eight years – which works out at just over £20m per season. By comparison, Manchester City had a net spend of £466m over the same period.
When Ferguson retired, the team stopped winning with managers such as Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho failing to recapture the glory days despite their credentials.
Since 2013, United have recruited again, with more than £1bn spent on transfer fees, but with no clear strategy and a regular change of manager, new recruits appear to be either panic buys, convenience or a big name to sell shirts.
Things got so bad that a fan protest led to the postponement in 2021 of arguably United’s biggest match of the season, the North West derby against Liverpool, with Old Trafford stormed and thousands more supporters blocking access to demand the Glazers sell the club.
In the aftermath of the abortive European Super League last year, executive vice-chairman Joel Glazer conceded that his family’s silence has given fans the impression that they do not care about the club.
In a two-hour meeting with the club’s Fans’ Forum – arranged following the fallout of the European Super League – he said: “We always took the approach that we should stay in the background [and] let the manager, the players, the people at Old Trafford, be the ones out in front, communicating and talking.
“In retrospect, that was not the right approach and there’s a middle ground.
“Our silence wrongly created the impression that we don’t care, that we aren’t football fans, that we only care about our commercial interests and money. I can assure you nothing could be further from the truth.”
And yet the silences have continued.
A recent report by Deloitte showed that the Glazers were the only Premier League owners to take dividends out of the club, with new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly impelled to include 'anti-Glazer clauses' to stop him taking dividends out of the Blues for a decade.
At the start of the 2022-23 season, United found themselves sitting in the Premier League relegation zone with two losses, one at home to Brighton coupled with a humiliating 4-0 defeat away to Brentford.
That Brentford defeat moved the Manchester United Supporters Trust to release a firm statement which said: “As we’ve always said, a fish rots from the head. And the ultimate responsibility for the terrible state of our football club must lie with its owners, the Glazer family.
“It is now for them and their management team to explain to United fans just why we are in this state, and what they are going to do about it. We’ve had some difficult times in the last decade, but this really does feel like rock bottom.”
“We’re being asked a lot about protests at upcoming games (including Liverpool) and as we have always said we will publicise any credible, lawful and peaceful protest so that our members have the information and can make their own decision as to whether they wish to take part.”
New manager Erik ten Hag is already under pressure to overhaul the squad, having recruited Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia for a combined £62m, with Christian Eriksen arriving as a free agent.
Having shocked the football world when they re-signed Cristiano Ronaldo at the start of last season, the Portuguese international wants to leave so he can play Champions League football.
Ronaldo has said he will soon reveal "the truth" about his future after reading so many "lies" this summer, which hardly helps the feeling of crisis surrounding the club.
United legend Gary Neville, who accrued over 600 appearances at the club, winning 23 major trophies, has not held back in an explosive rant on the sorry state of affairs of his former club.
He said: “There is a family in America that is letting its employees take the blame. They need to get on a plane to Manchester and explain what the plan is. We never will have the Glazers here.
“The only money that has been spent on players has been generated by the club. The Glazers have borrowed and used the revenue the club generates through its amazing fanbase. Us four (pundits) could buy the club tomorrow and spend the same money.
“My point is there has been a toxic culture at this club for the last 10 years since Alex Ferguson and (CEO) David Gill left. It’s a mess. And it cannot continue to go on. The embedded failure over a ten-year period has to come back to the owner
“They haven’t dealt with the football ground which is rusting. They need a billion (pounds) for the stadium and probably a few hundred million for the training facilities.
“They were cash rich a few years ago now they’re struggling. Something has to give.”
The Glazers’ failure to address fan concerns or share a vision and strategy to make the club competitive for major trophies once again compounds fans’ frustrations and unsurprisingly, only 4% of Manchester United fans back the ownership of the Glazer family, according to a recent poll.
The 1958 group plan to stage a fresh protest against the ownership before arch-rivals Liverpool’s visit to Old Trafford on August 22.
A statement on the group’s website said: “For Liverpool, we will plant The 1958 flag at the trinity [statue] for those wanting to make a stand from 7.30pm. In support of match-going and non match-going fans who have made the journey to show their discontent against this failing ownership.
“We are all on the same side and it’s crucial the momentum and pressure is maintained above all else. This is a war not a battle, dig yourselves in and be prepared for the long haul.”
The Glazers are reportedly considering selling a minority stake in the club, but leaving new coach Ten Hag to address issues that go far beyond his tenure or responsibility only serves to nurture the toxic narrative surrounding the club.
With United’s status as one of the biggest clubs in the world enduring, it will be interesting to see whether the Glazers change their approach.
Clearly, no trophy in five years and a catalogue of strategic and communications disasters are creating headlines for all the wrong reasons.

141 Headcanons: On Holiday
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
John Price is 100% a dad type. He likes golfing and fishing and sailing. Activities that let him unwind, sometimes make new friends in the shape of other middle-aged men at the country club or at the docks or at the lake. Rents a little cabin by the lake, where you can take a soak or sunbathe, while he goes out with his little fishing boat and try (and fail) to catch something nice for dinner.
Johnny MacTavish is an adventurous type. He likes hiking and camping, stuff that lets him stay busy, and will definitely explore some forest or national park or mountain range. But he also likes fun activities. Music festivals, for example. He'll definitely book you all-inclusive 3-day-long tickets even though there's only one or two artists/bands you want to see, just so you can have that experience and have fun together.
Kyle Garrick is a family lad. His family is big and loving and they book a little trip every year somewhere fun. It might be a new destination, or it might be somewhere they've been before, or maybe somewhere to visit family. But he loves bringing his love along, go do all the touristy things, see all the landmarks, take loads of pictures, try new restaurants and new food, and do cultural things like reading all the plaques on statues and fountains and monuments.
Simon Riley likes peace and quiet. That's the jist of it. Needs it, in fact. So, prepare to rent a little historical cottage in the Cotswold, or maybe a beach condo, or a cabin in the woods. Doesn't matter, what matters it's that it's fairly isolated, with no neighbors to really bother him. He can sleep in late, with no one to force him to do things he doesn't want to do, no schedule to uphold, no people to answer to. He'll roll out of bed at noon, make himself tea and go sit outside and feell the breeze on his skin for once.
Crack headcanons: Beach Day Episode™️
John Price tends to burn, instead of tan, surprisingly. Probably because his uniforms tend to cover him from neck to toes, leaving only his hands and face showing... And if you'd expect his face to be immune to burning, you'd be wrong. Especially because he's terrible at applying sunblock. By the time you notice, his cheeks, nose and forehead are red, and there are white lines around his muttonchops/beard where the sunblock didn't absorb... so he just looks ridiculous.
Johnny MacTavish likes to say he's not English/British... until he goes on holiday to southern Europe and he's suddenly the perfect example of the stereotypical English tourist. Football jersey, denim shorts, socks and slides/sandals, his entire skin is burned to a crisp and red, and, of course, he's wearing the most stupid-looking sunglasses you'll ever see... And then he gets to the beach, takes off his shorts and he's wearing a red speedo.
Kyle Garrick is 100% the type to disappear off his towel while you're sunbathing and, by the time you notice, he's in a completely different side of the beach playing beach paddle ball, beach volleyball or beach football with a group of other blokes or even with little kids. And he does all this while wearing his little cap (but backwards) and while absolutely covered in tanning oil. Does he need it? No. But he likes the feel of it.
Simon Riley would not be caught dead in swimming trunks or a speedo. The man needs full coverage. He's in a wet/surf suit and wearing a facekini WITH his stupid dad sunglasses and, maybe even, a visor. He gets fidgety if he has to sit in his towel for too long so he's also the type who'll go for a walk out of nowhere, down the beach, and, eventually, cross paths with an Asian grandma who's wearing the same exact outfit as him.

Changing the title...ok that must mean there's a significant reason for that change. The title's don't HAVE to be extremely tied into the episode, for instance I thought "Sunflowers" could just as easily have been titled "Triangles" and it have been fine...so this change is wigging me out a lot.
Also from "Boxes" to "The Strings that Bind Us" is a pretty significant change...so here I am trying to think about all the different strings we may have seen in the show.
Biscuit box string? I've seen some people mention this, however I don't recall ever seeing the biscuit boxes tied with string (correct me if I'm wrong but I did check several episodes). He always just gives the pink box. Even the one to Trent's daughter he gives to Higgens are just in a brown box.
2nd String? I'm not sure if this is what 2nd string is officially called in British football ever, but there could be something here. Players moving from 2nd string to 1st? Specifically Colin (we never did get to see the significance of Colin playing again). The new play giving the team more freedom to sit out sometimes and play others (more connection between 1st and 2nd string)?
Trent and Dani's friendship bracelets: this is the most solid connection I've found for string references. From the first time we see Trent s1 he is always wearing friendship bracelets (I assume they're made by his daughter), so are we getting the Crimmling finally? And then we also have Dani offering a friendship bracelet to Zava, so could be something there. Team makes friendship bracelets for each other? Certain significant people make bracelets for each other? Crimmling appears and makes bracelets for everybody?
And then there are myths that the episode might hint at that are common enough:
Red string of fate: an East Asian myth about the red strings that bind each of us, similar to the concept of soulmates. Pay attention to who wears red in this next episode.
Threads of life: in greek mythology refering to the 3 fates. The first fate spins the thread of each person's life from birth. The second fate measures each thread to pick how much life you get. The third cuts the thread at the end of a mortal life. Not great omens for this episode. Could mean death for a character. More likely I'd guess start of life if Rebecca's pregnant.
String theory: this could be a reference to A Wrinkle in Time. So far this book has been referenced about dealing with leadership, but another aspect of it is how it deals with time/distance/dimensional travel via string theory. So (very) loosley interpreted this could mean flashbacks, connections to past events and similar.
Pulling strings: last ep we had references to god dropping a square, this episode perhaps there's a bit of god or other power pulling the strings. There have been several references to the wizard of oz in the show so maybe this is referencing the appearance of the wizard (the person who has the high score on the pinball machine ACM who we have yet to meet) or another power at play pulling strings (rupert?)
Hanging by a thread/string: also not a great reference, could mean a character being at the end of their rope or just about to fall into a bad time (Ted? But he's already been IN IT, so I doubt it)
In all likelihood there will be at least 2 connections to string in this episode especially since they felt it was important enough to change the name.

Tottenham Hotspur & Crystal Palace investigate alleged racial gesture towards Son Heung-min - BBC Sport
The continued racism towards Son and other Asian players is honestly so disgusting and not talked about. There may not be a lot of Asian players in British football, but there's so much racism towards them, to the point it's so casually done and accepted.

hey faiza i feel weird sending u this but ive followed u for quite a while now and the more u share ur inner thoughts the more my appreciation for how intelligent u are grows? like i said, i know this is odd, but ure smart, eloquent and very expressive when it comes down to sharing your opinions on specific subjects (regardless of whether i agree with them or not). anyway, u dont have to answer i just wanted to say this, thats all!
hiiii anon!!!
AHHHHH no no please don't feel weird!! thank you so much for this!!!! idk at 27 it feels like i still havent Lived a lot even though .... when i write it down, i Have?? and my opinions change a lot all the time and at first i wasnt cool with that, i used to feel very ... urm. hypocritical?? of myself?? or not true to myself. but overtime i've learnt that Living actually Does Do That To You. you gain new experiences and perspectives and learn a little more about yourself and so your opinions on things change too. and thats a Good Thing!
and i dont wanna censor myself anymore ig? i feel like ive spent a lot of my life doing that. i am who i am and i am what ive lived through and its not all been good but its not all been bad and its not all been wise but its not all been dumb but hey, we're here now! of course i can either choose to regret some things, or i can choose to say yeah i lived through that and it didnt work out or go well and its only bc i lived through it that i know that now, so i choose that view instead. and im also done with censoring and hiding and shying away from who /i/ am too. and once i used to be Very Frustrated bc i used to feel like i was too much and too many things and liked too much and too many things. how can i be muslim that wears the hijaab AND desi (and not Just desi but BOTH indian AND pakistani which is its own huge dilemma fhshxisjdjsj) AND queer AND a woman WHILST being born and living in the uk. how does all that even FIT into one human?? how can i like So Many Things that sometimes contradict each other?? for example how can i Love Sports and be so sporty and yet be an asian muslim girl bc that just doesnt work in our culture?? or so i THOUGHT it didnt bc thats what i was told as a kid, until i was like no something isnt right here bc at 11 i Loved my judo and football classes at school and then i saw amir khan, a british pakistani boxer from the same town as i am, win an olympic gold medal for our country when he was just 17, and i was like ... see?? it isnt weird. and even now i love working out and lifting weights, no matter how much my ammi looks at me and thinks "you're a Desi Girl though watching sports is one thing but you being into it and actively doing it is just Weird but ur my daughter and at 27 i cant tell you what to do". so sometimes, you have to be the one to break the mould, ig.
but. yeah. the more i immersed myself with things that look like me and feel like me and reflect who i am, the more i was like, yeah ... i Can be all these things and thats cool, man. if that makes me complicated and Too Much, i just dont care anymore. and its work to search for those things that look and feel and reflect you, but thats what makes you appreciate every facet of yourself. that yeah, its hard to find, but thats what makes it so special, bc its rare. and when you start finding a community of people that like those things too, for their own reasons, you're like ... yeah, there's gotta be something that connects us in why i like this thing along with so many other people too.
and like even now i havent figured out my maximum yet, but there's so much fun in knowing that i'll carry on learning more about myself, the more i live.

Okay, so I was imagining sports with a desi reader x moon boys,
And this is the conclusion I came to:
Marc, as has been established in the fandom, is a huge baseball fan, right? A sport most South Asians are quite clueless about. So he tries to explain the rules to you. In conclusion, you think cricket is still better. So you and Steven keep teasing Marc about it, calling baseball pseudo cricket ( Yes, I am aware the rules are very different, but in both sports, there is a bat and a ball, ergo they are comparable).
Of course, Steven being the most British brit he is CRICKETTTTTT. Like, imagine England vs India/Bangladesh/Pakistan matches. You being the desi child you are, end up in your country's jersey, paint on your face, coke ka bottle and everything. The shouting fights are legendary. Marc facepalms every time he sees both of you. He thinks it is the most boring game in the universe ( unfortunately, despite my Indian roots, I have to agree with him, lol).
This last part is so self-indulgent, but my Bengali ass just could not help itself. One word. Football. With Jake Lockley. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but since Oscar is part Guatemalan for now, I am assuming that so is the character he is playing. And from what I've read, football ( not soccer) is huge there ( again, correct me if I'm wrong ). So that would be a huge bonding factor for the two of them. ( The average Bengali, and I'm generalising here, is usually a much more avid fan of football rather than cricket). Ahhhhhhhhhhh, I'm squealing.
Sry for making this so long. Could not help myself.

Inspired by the “Cluedo”-based task in tonight’s Taskmaster episode, I’ve decided to make a list of things that have different names in Britain versus America, and decide which version is better. As a Canadian, I come from somewhere that mainly uses British spellings (“colour”) but American pronunciation and terminology (“apartment”), so for all of these, when I say “American” I mean “North American”.
Objectively better thing to call it is in bold:
- British Cluedo versus American Clue – “Clue” is a term in the English language that means pieces of evidence that help solve a mystery, which is the central thing you have to gather in this game. “Cluedo” is not a word.
- British Where’s Wally versus American Where’s Waldo – Neither of them really make sense, but I have known one guy named Wally so I guess that’s technically a name, while Waldo is definitely not. The guy I knew named Wally was a vengeful misogynist, though, so don’t be too proud that him sharing a name with a character is why Britain wins this one.
- British football versus American soccer – It’s a ball and you kick it with your foot. Obviously the British are correct on this one. I say “soccer” because if I don’t then I’ll sound to the other Canadians like I’m pretentiously pretending that watching so much British TV has turned me British, but even as I say it I know it’s incorrect.
- British keepie ups versus American kicking a ball around – That doesn’t need a specific name, especially not one that leads to adults saying “keepie ups” with a straight face. You guys are weird.
- British Northern Lights versus American Golden Compass – Fun fact, The Golden Compass was actually Phillip Pullman’s original choice for the title of that book. For any other first books in a series of British fantasy novels that have different titles on each side of the pond, possibly by an author who shall not be named, obviously the British version is correct. But on this one, the American actually got the author’s original intent. And my belief in that has nothing to do with the fact that my childhood was partly shaped by lovingly reading books with covers that said “The Golden Compass” and “The Philosopher’s Stone”, and I can’t see either as being wrong (I mean, they might be wrong for other reasons, but not the title).
- British Naughts and Crosses versus American Xs and Os – They’re Xs, not crosses.
- British Nike versus American Nike (pronounced “Nike-ie”) – I guess the British pronunciation follows the rules of the English language better than the American one, as shown by the fact that I had to write out how the American one differs from how you’d normally pronounce that. But given that they’ve killed a lot of children in poor Asian countries, I’m not sure anyone really wins this one. I mean, there’s probably some explanation for why whatever company owns Clue/Cluedo has also killed people, and the sport of football/soccer has definitely killed people over the years, so there are no clean hands, really.
- British Lynx versus American Axe – Again, no one really wins this, but lynx are pretty cool so there’s no need to tarnish the nice kitties with this.

Black History Month: Trajectory of the history!
Tumblr media
October marks Black History Month, the annual commemoration of the history, achievements and contributions of black people in the UK. For the whole month until October 31, events celebrating African and Caribbean cultures and histories will take place around the UK. Events include an exhibition in the Bank of England, which explores the Bank's historical links with slavery. While the UK celebrates Black History month in October, in the US where commemorations originated it takes place throughout February. So, here is everything that needs to be known about Black History Month. Why is Black History Month necessary? People from African and Caribbean backgrounds have been a fundamental part of British history for centuries. However, campaigners believe their value and contribution to society are often overlooked, ignored and distorted. More recently, greater attention has been paid to the importance of the Windrush generation and the Black Lives Matter movement, especially since the death of George Floyd in May 2020. How Did it Originate? Carter G. Woodson Known as the "Father of Black History", Carter G Woodson was born in Virginia in 1875 and was the son of former slaves. Carter G Woodson worked tirelessly throughout his life to promote black history in schools, leaving an indelible legacy. The event got momentum in 1970, and since 1976 every US President officially designated February as Black History Month in the US. February was chosen in the US because it coincides with the births of former President Abraham Lincoln and Fedrick Douglass- who escaped slavery and became a key social activists. Both men played a significant role in helping to end slavery. How is Black History Month Celebrated? Celebration for the Black History Month The event is intended to recognise the contribution and achievements of those with African or Caribbean heritage. It's also an opportunity for people to learn more about the effects of racism and how to challenge negative stereotypes. Black History Month is also celebrated in the community in places such as museums, care homes and workplaces. A broad range of topics is covered, from Britain's colonial past to migration and music. Government funding is available to local organisations to help mark Black History Month in their area. Some of the UK's leading organisations include The Windrush Foundation, National Archives, and 100 Great Black Britons. When was it first Recognised? Black History Month It was first recognised in 1975. When Black History Month first started in the UK, there was a big focus on black American history. Over the time there has been more attention on black British history and key black figures from the UK, such as: - Walter Tull, the first black officer to command white troops in the British Army and one of English football's first black players. - Malorie Blackman, a bestselling author and the first black Children's Laureate. - Olive Morris, a social activist who co-founded groups such as the Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent and the Brixton Black Women's Group - Dr Shirley Thompson, the first woman in Europe to conduct and compose a symphony within the last 40 years. - Lewis Hamilton, one of the most high profile competitors in Formula One and the only black driver. Quotations "My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together". Desmond Tutu "History has Shown us that courage can be contagious, and hope can take on a life of its own". Michelle Obama "We have to talk about liberating minds as well as liberating society". Angela Davis Black History Month Read the full article

Bend It Like Beckham
"Bend It Like Beckham" is a film that explores the clash between cultural expectations and personal dreams, particularly for young women of color. The movie centers around Jesminder "Jess" Bhamra, a British-Indian teenager who is great at football (soccer), but faces a lot of resistance from her conservative immigrant parents.
In many traditional South Asian families, there is immense pressure on young girls to marry, excel academically and pursue careers considered safe and prestigious, often in fields like medicine, law, or engineering. Jess's parents, like many immigrant parents, fear that her pursuit of soccer could jeopardize her chances of attending university, marrying a "suitable man", and securing a stable future. The struggle between Jess's desire to play football and her family's expectations reflects the challenge that many first gen young people of color face when trying to navigate the intersection of their cultural heritage and their individual aspirations.
This film highlights the importance of breaking free from societal stereotypes and familial pressures to pursue one's passions, demonstrating that it's possible to reconcile cultural traditions with personal dreams.

A Melting Pot of Influences: Foreign and Native Legacies and their Contributions to Canadian Culture
Canadian culture embodies a diverse tapestry of influences, reflecting the nation’s historical and contemporary connections with other regions across the globe. Among those contributions, Europe has played a particularly significant role in molding multiple facets of Canadian life, ranging from fashion and cuisine to leisure activities, entertainment, and philosophical paradigms. This essay seeks to expound upon the European underpinnings in Canadian culture and the ways in which these legacies have merged with Indigenous and other international elements to forge the distinctive cultural blend that characterizes modern-day Canada.
The realm of Canadian fashion is predominantly shaped by renowned European designers, such as Adidas, Nike, H&M, Inditex, LVMH, TJX, and Kering, among others. Similarly, the eclectic culinary landscape of Canada draws inspiration from a wide array of global sources, with European cuisine holding a prominent position. In recent years, East Asian and South Asian dishes have gained increased popularity, largely attributed to the influx of immigrants from these regions. Canadian architecture likewise traces its roots to Europe, being primarily influenced by French and English styles, as well as neo-Classical designs from Italy and Brutalist structures from Soviet Russia. Recreational activities in the country are shaped by a combination of European and Indigenous impacts. European-derived sports, such as football, competitive swimming, baseball (inspired by cricket), tennis, volleyball, golf, water polo, rugby, gymnastics, and boxing, as well as many more, coexist alongside Indigenous-inspired sports, such as hockey, basketball, and canoeing.
The entertainment industry in Canada shares a similar European origin story, with writing, cinema, and music chiefly rooted in European traditions, but these forms of art have all evolved independently, leading to the vibrant amalgamation of the music scene in contemporary Canada. Canada’s modern music landscape is a vivid mosaic of wide-ranging genres, encompassing K-pop, American folk music, European synth and electronic music, classical compositions, big bands, African American rap and jazz, English rock, country music, and more. Modern drama and theatrical traditions can trace their genesis to ancient Greek theatre and the works of distinguished playwrights such as Shakespeare and Cervantes. Likewise, numerous philosophical, economic, and cultural concepts have European origins, with democracy deriving from ancient Greece and the modern parliamentary system from England. Legal frameworks and systems of governance in Canada also stem from ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, and the British Empire.
Most of the prominent businesses in modern day Canada are multinational organizations with an international origin. Nonetheless, a select few venerable brands have endured since the era of the fur trade. Among these, Hudson’s Bay Company stands as a notable example, holding the distinction as the world’s oldest continuously operating international enterprise. Its storied history and longevity serve as a testament to its adaptability and resilience in the ever-evolving global marketplace. Canadian traditions also exhibit European influences, with celebrations like Christmas, Easter, and Halloween. Additionally, Thanksgiving symbolizes a harmonious blend of Indigenous and European cultures. The holiday originated in Massachusetts in 1621, when settlers and the Wampanoag tribe shared an autumn harvest celebration.
The multifaceted nature of Canadian culture bears witness to the country’s abundant and diverse heritage, with European impacts pervading various aspects of its identity. Through the intertwining of Indigenous, European, and global elements, Canada has cultivated a unique cultural merging that epitomizes its enduring commitment to inclusiveness and diversity. As the nation continues to progress, this intricate fusion of influences will remain an integral part of its essence, perpetuating the spirited and dynamic character of Canadian society.
