Trunks vs Goten - Who is the more compelling character?

So anyone who reads my DBZ posts knows that Future Trunks is my fav DBZ character hands down. Gohan is 2nd place. Besides Gohan and Future Trunks, I do not acknowledge the other hybrids...until now.

Kid Trunks and Goten were done dirty in Z. I was watching their tournament fight recently and my heart ached at all the missed potential with these two. I know Kid Trunks at least has his future counterpart to get some street cred from but let's ignore Future Trunks for now. Which kid had the best story beats? Let me find out!

Hybrid Potential

Trunks is stronger than Goten but only marginally. So I believe Goten has more latent potential than Trunks. Despite being younger and only getting training from Chi Chi and then like a month of advanced training from Gohan, Goten is able to compete with Trunks who had better training facilities and a more dedicated training partner (although it's debatable how involved Vegeta was in Trunks' training after more reflection).

Relationship with Fathers

Trunks wins this hands down. We first got a taste of Vegeta's development in the Android saga with Future Trunks. But then we have the hug scene with Vegeta and Trunks in the buu saga. Vegeta has never held his son and it's tragic that he does so when he is about to sacrifice himself to atone for his sins. We see Trunks wanting to impress his dad and Trunks even has a moment where he declares he wants to be a better fighter than his dad so he can succeed where Vegeta failed in defeating Buu. We see funny moments at the end of Z and GT where Vegeta acts like a regular dad, threatening Trunks' allowance and chiding him for slacking. Goten's moments with Goku are lacking to say the least. The scenes they have are not really all that deep in the grand scheme of things. How does Goten feel about his dad being gone for most of his life? How does Goku feel about missing his son's life? The relationship between Goku and Goten is sadly very generic and hollow. All the amazing father moments were given to Gohan. Even when Goku leaves with Uub, Goten, along with Chi Chi, is completely shafted. Instead, the emotional moment is given to Pan. Poor Goten.

Sibling Relationship

Do I even need to explain?? Goten hands down! I love Gohan and Goten's relationship. I love how Goten sees his brother as a role model and you can feel how much they adore each other. Gohan is Goten's main masculine figure so Goten probably saw Gohan as a dad-like figure growing up too. Goten is also such as sweet baby brother. As for Trunks, I can't say the same. First, the age gap between him and Bulla is huge. He was already a grown teenager when she was just a toddler. Plus, she is a girl who shows no interest in fighting. I can't see these siblings being too close. She probably grew up functionally as an only child. I wonder if Trunks ever felt jealous of how good of a father Vegeta was to her? That is something I loved reading about in fanfictions in the past. We just don't see much interaction with Trunks and Bulla but that is expected given the circumstances and Bulla being a useless character anyway with little screentime.

Personality

This is hard. I personally find Kid Trunks more interesting as a kid character. Goten's personality is less entertaining. Trunks has the dominant personality so at times Goten just feels like his sidekick. However, Goten has an edge when things become serious. I blame a lot of Gotenks' attitude on Trunks. Trunks also presented himself as a bad influence on Goten. After Buu killed Chi Chi, Goten became serious. As soon as that boy entered the time chamber, he got down to business while Trunks was goofing off. Goten was taking the threat seriously until Trunks' attitude rubbed off on him. Sigh, poor Goten. I want to call it a tie...but I will give my vote to Trunks.

Relationship with Mothers

I will say that it is totally unfair how Chi Chi was demonized for wanting to protect Gohan but the same is not done when it is Goten and Trunks' turn to save the world. All of a sudden, the kids are poor babiesssss wahh :(

Anyway...I love how both moms changed after their sons were born. Before Trunks, Bulma was super immature and flighty. She became really admirable, and less annoying, after she became a mom. It was so cute the way she was always holding Trunks! As for Chi Chi, Goku's death really mellowed her out. Goten must have been a blessing for her, especially given his uncanny resemblance to Goku. I think Trunks helped with Bulma's development more while Goten had a greater symbolism of his dad living on. Goten would likely be a bit closer to his mom given she was his sole parent. Ugh, this is really hard to choose...but I will go with Goten. A lot of emphasis was placed on Trunks' relationship with his dad while for Goten, it was his mom. I think a lot of Bulma's development is centered around her relationship with Vegeta. For Chi Chi, she is highlighted more as a mom than a wife in my opinion. Which is understandable given Goku's high absenteeism rate.

Conclusion

To my pleasant surprise, I find myself favouring Goten over Trunks. I am shocked because I never cared much for Goten. However, I do think that Goten had so much potential to be a compelling character. So many topics could have been explored such as his relationship with his dad and his potential. Also, maybe Goten could have been the son who loved fighting and was the one to take up the mantle instead of Gohan??? The seeds were there to make this storyline happen. We could have ended Z with Goku training Goten alongside Uub. Ahh, the missed potential. As for Kid Trunks, I just can't care too much about him because he will always be overshadowed by Future Trunks. He can't compete.

This is my unexpected opinion! I am open to hearing other views.

Preview to Christmas with the Time Patrol.

Under the night sky over West City, a Saiyan that resembled Vegeta standing over the roof of a building, staring at the streets below as he couldn't help but reflect on stuff. His arms were crossed and he seemed a bit angry when another Saiyan that resembled that of Goku landed right behind him. These were Vegeta Jr aka Vegeta V, and Son Kakarot Goku Jr. Goku Jr was seen walking towards Vegeta Jr before he himself started speaking.

"There's my favorite humbug!" He said as he noticed Vegeta Jr rolled his eyes.

"What the hell do you want, Goku," Vegeta Jr said in annoyance.

"Nice to see you too, I'm just here to bug ya," Goku Jr. answered.

Vegeta Jr gave a growl of irritation. "Well you're doing a good job," he retorted.

"Wow rude," Goku Jr said in a light-hearted tone.

"Aside from instant transmission how did you find me?" Vegeta Jr scoffed.

Goku Jr only rolled his eyes from that before answering. "One of your sisters told me this was your favorite brooding area."

"Bulma," Vegeta Jr asked, clearly mentioning Bulma Leigh.

"Bulma," Goku Jr calmly answered, causing Vegeta Jr to sigh. He then walked up to his friend. "Anyway, there's this party happening at your place with the family and friends."

The Clone and adopted son of Vegeta then turned to look at the city again. "I'll pass," he said only to cause the clone and adopted son of Goku to quickly get to where he was.

"Oh come on Vegeta!" Goku Jr responded with a stubbornness in his tone. "Don't be such a grinch! The 12 days of Christmas are on their way!"

"So?" Vegeta Jr responded. "I'm supposed to care how?"

"Well overall it's the best time of the year," Goku Jr tried to explain.

"Really? Well that's depressing," Vegeta Jr responded in a pretty harsh tone.

"Don't be like that, Vegeta!" Goku Jr tried explaining as he then continued. "Christmas is supposed to be a happy time to escape from all your troubles."

Vegeta Jr rolled his eyes and scoffed again before looking at Goku Jr. "Oh really?" Vegeta Jr questioned in a very condescending tone. "And what is so special about Christmas anyway!?"

Goku Jr then took a minute to explain a few things to try to convince his friend of things to like about the holiday. "W-well," he started with has he done started to think of idea things that came from the top of his head. "There's a lot of things, like snowman, various Christmas traditions like mistletoe, gingerbread houses," he then took a moment to notice his friend wasn't budging. "Is any of this working?" The silence gave him a clear answer on it being no. The son of Goku then let out a sigh. "Didn't think so."

"Hmph," Vegeta Jr grunted as he then continued. "It sounds like this Christmas thing there's a waste of everyone's time after all," he said very harshly causing Goku Jr to really speak from the heart this time.

"No Vegeta," he told his friend as if he was being genuine with what he was saying. "It's more than that! It's an excuse to spend time with the people you care about! Friends that you're able to stand? Family? Maybe even a lover?"

"I don't have a lover, nor proper friends or family!" Vegeta Jr then snapped before he looked away as his expression was now rather sad than angry. "Not anymore...."

"Oh....." Goku Jr said as he realized who he was talking about. I know the lover that he lost forever when her reality was erased. "You mean Aria.... Vegeta I'm sorry I-"

"No it's fine," Vegeta Jr said as he quickly decided to look back at the city. It seems that his pain was holding him back from enjoying the holidays with his family.

Goku Jr needed to think of something, anything to get him to talk. "What was she like?" He suddenly asked, not expecting an answer. "I never got a chance to meet her."

Vegeta Jr took a moment to think about it. It was still a painful subject. But part of him knew that he needed to get it off his chest in order to get himself some closure. "She was remarkable," he said truthfully. "She was very strong, brave, intelligent, persistent, and she was kind and compassionate. She even loved this time of year. More than any of our friends or family. She made the holidays a lot more enjoyable but she was still around. I remember every time we spend time with her during this time of year, she always decorated various places with tons of mistletoe and listen to the Christmas music in her home. Sometimes even making me sing along with her or dance with her with certain tunes. I never really understood it, but she loved it."

"Sounds nice," Goku Jr said with a lighthearted chuckle.

"It was....." Vegeta Jr said with a sad tone. "But that was a long time ago."

"That's too bad," Goku Jr said with a light-hearted tone. "I bet you have a really great singing voice!"

Vegeta Jr then chuckled a bit. "You know," he softly said as a slight smile was seen on his face. "I'm sure she would have actually liked you, Goku."

"Really?" Goku Jr said with a lighthearted tone of genuine surprise. "I bet she would have fit right in."

"She would have," Vegeta Jr said as a smile faded. It was clear that her memory still hurts even after all this time.

"Look, Vegeta," Goku Jr then tried to explain. "Pretty sure she would have wanted you to still enjoy Christmas to the best of your ability, and you may not want to believe it, but you do have a family. One that is currently missing you right now. And I'm pretty sure that they and Aria would not want you to hate Christmas because of a few bad memories, rather try to make the most of Christmas each year to the best of your ability." He then let out a sigh as he then slowly began to figure out what to say next. "Well,I'll go tell them all that you said hi," he then said as he quickly started to walk away. "I know how you feel about parties, after all."

"Goku, wait!" Vegeta Jr then called out. "I'll tell them myself."

With that Vegeta Jr then walked over to his friend and then placed his hand on his shoulder allowing Goku Jr to use instant transmission. "You know," Goku Jr then said. "It's a good thing I managed to convince ya. All of your sisters, your mom, my mom and sisters, as well as Yamelia and Mochi would have killed me if things didn't go to plan."

"Well the night's still young," Vegeta Jr then told him. "Maybe I'll get lucky."

Goku Jr then gave a small groan of frustration. "And grumpy Veg is back..." he then muttered. "Great.... Let's see for how long." And with that, Goku Jr then focused on the energy of everyone at Capsule Corp and slowly teleported to where they were at.
