6 Best Laptops for Cricut: Top Picks for Crafting Enthusiasts
Hey, are you finding it difficult to choose the best laptops for Cricut? Look no further than this guide, where I have included the top 6 branded laptops, including Mac, Dell, Microsoft, Acer, and ASUS. Yes, these laptops are an excellent choice if you want to run the Cricut Design Space software.
Besides, what do I need to specifically check when buying the best laptop for Cricut Design Space? Well, the answer is system requirements. To check whether your computer can run Design Space, visit Cricut’s official website to find out the minimum system configuration required for the Cricut app. As a result, you will get a basic idea of your device.
But I understand that finding such a laptop may be difficult. Hence, I made it simple for you through this write-up. You will find different brands of laptops that are compatible with your Cricut. Let’s jump into this blog to learn more.
1. Microsoft Surface Pro 9
Tumblr media
I recommend the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 as one of the best laptops for Cricut users. It comes with Intel Core i7 and Windows 11. Also, it comes with 32 GB or 16 GB of RAM, which is more than required.
But why should you go for it? Look, 3 reasons make this laptop worthy of buying. Look at the points below:
Top-notch 2 in 1 laptop
2. Superb Screen Performance
3. Tablet mode works great for Design Space
If you find it justifiable, go for it without a second thought.
2. Dell XPS 15
Tumblr media
Besides, it comes with the latest processors that perform design tasks smoothly. In addition to the reasons to buy, the fast performance, amazing battery life, and 4K option make it the first and last choice.
3. Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3

Despite this, the best thing about this Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3 is that the battery lasts up to 15 hours. Thus, the battery life and built quality are something that you should cut.
4. Acer Aspire 3 Spin 14
Tumblr media
Since it provides a 360-degree hinge for folding your display, it is convenient. You can also use the stylus to create your design, and I, too, prefer using it on my Acer Aspire laptop. Hence, this is affordable and can rotate the touchscreen at a 360° angle, making it easy to create a stylus design.
5. MacBook Air (M2, 2022)
Tumblr media
But what made me consider this one of the best laptops for Cricut? It was a beautiful display with an excellent M2 chip performance and built quality. With this MacBook, you can use your Cricut uninterruptedly.
6. ASUS Zenbook S 13 Flip OLED

But do you know what makes it different from other laptops? It’s reasonably priced, has an OLED screen, and a Magnesium Chassis.

So, find the best laptop for Cricut Design Space and create something extraordinary.

There are so many brilliant devices to choose from each year, with prices ranging from £200 to £2,000 or more. Cost can also vary massively between different configurations of the same laptop, which only adds to the confusion. In this brief buying guide, we’ll help you make the right choice by outlining the most important factors to consider before you bust out the bank card. What do you need your laptop for?Your personal requirements should dictate what sort of laptop you go for. A typical university student will have different tech needs than a professional video editor. Some may need a laptop that can process large files at rapid speeds, while others may just want to use Google Docs or browse the web. Ultimately, it all comes down to what you want your laptop to do.What about performance and battery life? The most powerful laptops are those with the most powerful CPUs and the highest amount of RAM. A laptop's CPU power is measured in GHz and each processor has a baseline frequency as well as a maximum frequency. Other factors can impact overall performance, including poor temperature control, which can lead to thermal throttling. Ideally, any laptop you buy should have at least 4GB of RAM as a minimum. Processors aren’t as easy to pin down – they might be dual-core, quad-core or hexa-core and can range greatly in power. See related Best 2-in-1 laptop 2021: The finest laptop/tablet hybrids you can buy Best cheap laptop 2021: The best budget Windows 10 laptops and Chromebooks Best lightweight laptop 2020: The finest Ultrabooks you can buy from Microsoft, Razer, Apple and more A MacBook Pro (or Windows equivalent like the Dell XPS 15) has a much more powerful CPU and more RAM than a cheap Chromebook because people expect them to run multiple demanding applications.Battery size is measured in milliamp-hours (mAH) or Watt-hours (Wh) – the biggest battery will (in theory) last the longest, but it all depends on how much power the various components inside the device use (the display, CPU and GPU have the biggest impact). An ultra-budget laptop with a small battery size may last longer than a premium notebook with a huge battery because its internal hardware isn’t as demanding. We run a standardised video rundown test on every single laptop we review, with the longest-lasting performers tending to be a mix between efficient high-end ultraportable laptops and low-powered Chromebooks. What operating system should you go for?Whether it’s Windows, macOS or Chrome OS, each operating system has its own strengths and weaknesses. macOS is only found in Apple’s own laptops, while Windows powers all sorts of laptops from manufacturers such as Acer, Asus and Lenovo. Google’s low-powered Chrome OS is also rising in popularity and can be found on a wide range of
devices. What’s the best display resolution? When it comes to laptop displays, the resolution isn’t everything. If the same laptop has the option of a Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display and a 4K (3,840 x 2,160) display, the latter is usually more expensive but not necessarily sharper. How sharp a display look depends on two factors: the size of the screen and how far away you sit from it.In our experience, you don't really need more than 1,920 x 1,080 on a screen 14in or smaller. In fact, if you have 20/20 vision, you'd have to be sitting viewing the display at a distance closer than 56cm. Given that laptops with higher resolution panel typically suffer a bit in the battery life department, it's often worth opting for the lower resolution, and cheaper, option if you can.The quality of a laptop’s display has little to do with the resolution of the screen, however. There's never a guarantee of a laptop’s maximum brightness, colour accuracy or contrast ratio no matter how sharp it is. We measure all of these when testing each laptop, because a dim, muddy or washed-out display can ruin a great product. How many ports should a laptop have?In addition to a power socket and headphone jack, most new laptops will come with at least a couple of USB A and one USB C port. When it comes to connections, the general rule of thumb is the more the merrier. It is worth paying attention to the type of USB C ports you're getting, however; although they might look the same, they often have different capabilities from machine to machine. For the fastest transfer speeds, look for Thunderbolt 3 USB C ports; USB C isn't as quick. And don't assume every USB C port on a laptop can carry video, power and data. Although the standard allows for this, manufacturers sometimes limit what each port can do.It’s extremely useful to have a full-size HDMI connector for hooking up the laptop to additional monitors, too, although these aren't particularly common on slimmer laptops. And an SD card reader doesn’t hurt either – an addition that’s sorely lacking on Apple’s laptops these days.

How to care for your A2113 battery.
This is the Replacement apple A2113 Battery, You can extend the life of your A2113 battery significantly through the proper care and handling of your battery.
Any new A2113 battery should first be fully charged by leaving it plugged in overnight. Once a computer battery is fully charged it will no longer accept any more power. It is a common practice to leave laptops plugged in after they have been turned off so that the battery has a full charge the next time you use your laptop. It is probably fully charged within 5 hours.
A brand new A2113 laptop battery is in a weakened condition since it has not been conditioned yet. Condition and break in your new battery by performing 5 partial discharge and recharge cycles the first week you receive your new battery.
Run on battery power without the AC adapter cord at least once a week to keep the A2113 battery cells active and at their peak potential. When your laptop is plugged into the power adapter the battery goes to 'standby mode' while your laptop runs directly on electricity from the wall outlet.
Even though your battery indicates it is fully charged, your battery will return to a weakened state again in a few months if it does not get some exercise through partial discharge and recharge cycles while running on battery power alone.
If your A2113 battery has not been actively used 2 months or more, condition your battery again with 5 partial discharge & recharge cycles to increase the batteries capacity and run time.
Don't run your battery all the way to empty. Your battery will have a longer service life if it receives shallow discharge and recharge cycles. Research has shown that the useful life of the battery will be much longer if you begin to recharge the battery any time before reaching 20% of the remaining power capacity. Recharging the A2113 battery even after 10 minutes will not reduce the battery's life span as lithium batteries do not have the memory effect which was found in older NiCad battery technology. NiCad batteries have never been used in laptops, even the earliest models.
Never run your battery below the 2% critically low warning point. If your battery is run below this point it may not have enough energy to even recharge. This may effectively 'kill' your A2113 battery.
How can I extend your battery run time?
You can extend your A2113 battery run time by minimizing the power drain on your battery. A 3 cell battery will run approximately 2 to 2-1/2 hours when the battery is new. Even longer times can be achieved by minimizing the power consumption of your laptop. Here are the top ways to reduce your power consumption.
Avoid using the CD or DVD drive as the motor consumes a fair amount of power.
Turn off your wireless finder if you are not using the internet.
Remove any devices plugged into your USB ports or other ports.
Close out programs you are not using. By minimizing the load on your CPU, sometimes you can avoid having the cooling fan turn to its high speed mode.
Increase your memory to 4 Gigabytes. This creates less work for your hard drive. Data is temporarily written to your hard drive when your memory is not sufficient to hold all the data on the many pages you may be accessing.
Reduce the brightness of your laptop screen. This is the number one drain on your battery by far.

Dongles, adaptors, cables, and hubs–such is the life for those who opt for modern Apple hardware. When you have a laptop as powerful as MacBook Pro, it's only natural to want to plug in an Ethernet cable, monitors, perhaps a video scratch drive, but it can all get a bit overwhelming sometimes.
And yet, I'm reluctant to shell out hundreds of dollars for those posh Thunderbolt 3 docks that really just add a few ports. Something about paying so much for an adaptor really irks me. That's why the TerraMaster TD2 Thunderbolt 3 Plus appealed to me: it's a 7-in-1 docking station combined with a 2-bay RAID enclosure. It can do the job of two devices I already have on my desk, and more besides, and faster.
Design and Specifications
With a brush aluminium chassis and matching plastic panel at the front, you'll also find a convenient handle on the top. At just over 3lbs (1.4kgs) without drives fitting, the TD2 is certainly lightweight enough to carry around, though I'm not sure how common that is to warrant the inclusion of a handle.
Tumblr media
Six green LEDs on the front panel's left-hand side indicate the status of drives, power, and 20/15/9V USB-C power output.
In addition to the main Thunderbolt 3 upstream port, you'll find a downstream port for daisy-chaining other Thunderbolt 3 devices, a mini-Displayport 1.4, Gigabit Ethernet, and two USB3.0 ports. Only one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports can connect a host device (indicated by the laptop symbol); it doesn't support access from two machines simultaneously. The Gigabit Ethernet connection also can't be used to convert this into a Network Attached Storage system; it merely provides a USB to Ethernet bridge for the host machine.
Tumblr media
The Mini DisplayPort 1.4 can drive a single 8K monitor or dual 4K monitors.
A suitable 80cm Thunderbolt 3 cable rated to 40Gbs is included in the package, as well as a 90W power adaptor. 60W of that available for the Thunderbolt 3 devices (either your laptop or daisy-chained devices).
The only real flaw in the design is the lack of front panel connectivity options.  There are enough ports around the back for permanently attached devices, but one or two USB3.0 ports on the front would have been greatly appreciated.
Tumblr media
A card reader is also notable by its omission. I suspect video editors are a large segment of those who purchase RAID0 direct-storage like this, so the ability to import videos from an SD card would have been nice. Of course, you can always plug in a small SD card reader, but it wouldn't have been a huge design change to incorporate one at the front.
A large 80mm fan provides cooling on the rear of the chassis, which runs silently.
Tumblr media
The drive bays are not lockable. When fitted with an SSD, they look positively wasteful with the expanse of space. This isn't a problem for most desks, but it might be if you're specifically looking for something ultra-portable to pack into your luggage.
Tumblr media
RAID Options
The TerraMaster TD2 is a hardware RAID, meaning you don't need any additional software or host system drivers to use it. This is a huge benefit, particularly on Mac OS, where third-party drivers are a frequent source of issues.
All configuration is done using a tiny dial on the back of the device and the recessed reset switch. You can choose between RAID0, RAID1, JBOD, or single volume. It supports drives up to 16TB, for a total maximum of 32TB.
Just screw in the drives (screws and a screwdriver are supplied for both HDDs or SSDs), then power on and hold down the reset switch. The drive LED will be orange while it reformats. In case you forget, TerraMaster has affixed an instruction sticker on the side.
Tumblr media
You can read a detailed explanation of what RAID is, but here's the short version:
RAID0 "Striped": Data is split up and written simultaneously across both disks. This provides close to double the performance of a single drive for HDDs, less so with SSDs. Useful for applications where speed is a priority, like video editing. The total capacity is the combination of both drives.
RAID1 "Mirrored": The same data is written to both disks simultaneously, duplicating one drive to the other. This provides one disk fault tolerance, such that if a single drive dies, you won't lose any data. The total capacity is that of a single disk.
JBOD: Different sized drives can be used, and a single volume is created, the capacity of which is a combination of both. There is no speed benefit, nor any fault tolerance. This mode is useful only if you want an enormous disk volume and have different sized disks.
Single: Each drive is presented individually.
There are other RAID levels, but the TD2 doesn't offer them as it's not appropriate for a 2-bay device. Also, it's worth noting that RAID1 is not a backup. If data becomes corrupted on one disk, both are corrupted. RAID1 only protects against a single drive becoming unusable, not issues with the data itself. There is no error checking parity or bit-rot protection.
Speed Testing
The primary purpose of having a desktop RAID0 configuration is usually video editing, so I used the BlackMagic Speed Test app to evaluate RAID performance.
Of course, results are going to depend upon the drives you put in. The device can hold both spinning 3.5" HDDs or 2.5" SSDs, so I put it through its paces with both.
First, with two WD Red 4TB drives (CMR), RAID 0, I achieved 240MB/s write and 250MB/s read. This is roughly what I'd expect—not exactly double the performance of a single drive, but thereabouts. These drives are rated for reliability in a NAS environment, not high performance, so you could certainly achieve better with other disks.
Next, I swapped these about for two 1TB SSDs, and managed an average of 600MB/s write and 800MB/s read. The Samsung 860 EVOs I used are rated to around 500MB/s native read-write, which is slightly slower than theoretically possible in a striped RAID 0 configuration. Other drives may yield closer to the 810MB/s maximum read/write that TerraMaster states. This difference may also be accounted for the difference between sustained data transfer and random read/write. BlackMagic tests for the former—in this case, I used the largest 5GB test mode.
Tumblr media
For comparison sake, the internal NVMe on my MacBook Pro registered as anywhere from 1400MB/s to 2000MB/s, with reads of around 2700MB/s.
Meanwhile, a single external spinning HDD connected with a USB3 dock scored 132MB/s write and 130MB/s read. In this case, the speed of the drive is the limitation, rather than the USB3.0 cable.
60W Power Delivery
Although Thunderbolt 3 specs allow for a significant amount of power to be transferred and a theoretical 40GB/s data transfer, the TD2 Thunderbolt 3 Plus is limited to 60W total. It can deliver that at 20V, 15V, or 9V. This sounds like a lot but may not be enough to provide all your device's power requirements. My MacBook Pro, for instance, is supplied with an 87W wall charger.
Plugging in just the TD2 displayed a charging status, but would still lose battery on occasion, usually when the machine was running full whack transcoding videos. This behavior was inconsistent though, and I suspect related to how many other devices were also plugged in through the TD2 itself and the Mac's other ports. On one occasion, I returned to find the power completely drained. Less powerful or more efficient laptops probably may not have an issue with this, and realistically, it's not intended as a replacement for your original charger. The latest M1-equipped 13-inch Macbook Air needs a meager 30W, which the TD2 Thunderbolt 3 Plus will happily supply.
Tumblr media
Should You Buy the TerraMaster TD2 Thunderbolt 3 Plus?
Despite being fast for its price point, the TerraMaster TD2 Thunderbolt 3 Plus is perhaps overkill for most people. USB3.1 has more than enough bandwidth for a dual-SSD RAID0 storage, so it's only if you plan to daisy chain several other Thunderbolt devices (like a 4K monitor or three, or yet more storage) that you may see the benefits 40GB/s of bandwidth offers. But if that does describe you, and you need masses of fast storage attached to your Macbook, we can highly recommend the TerraMaster TD2 Thunderbolt 3 Plus. Even if you don't need that sort of bandwidth now, you'll be future-proofed should you need to later. Don't throw away all your dongles just yet, though.
If you made it this far in the review thinking the TD2 would be a neat way to have lots of storage, and you aren't bothered about speed, consider the benefit of a Network Attached Storage system instead.

Dell XPS 13 (9310) Review
The newest Dell XPS 13 is one of the first ultraportable laptops to come with Intel's latest 11th Generation "Tiger Lake" CPUs, offering speedy, efficient computing performance and long battery life. This 2.8-pound laptop also has an exceptional 13.4-inch display and a gorgeous chassis, all of which combine to make it our Editors' Choice pick among premium Windows ultraportables. The price is a bit high, starting at $999.99 and ringing up at $1,649 as tested, but it's worth it for uncompromising fans of cutting-edge performance and style.
The XPS 13's Moment to Shine
If you were tempted to buy an XPS 13 earlier this year following its significant redesign (model 9300) but didn't pull the trigger, it's a good thing you waited. Now you can get everything we like about the new laptop with the added bonus of the latest Intel silicon.
The CPU bump is essentially the only change from the 9300 to the current model 9310, but it's an important one if you plan to keep your machine for five years or more. Dell does churn out new XPS 13 models at a prodigious rate, sometimes multiple times per year. Still, a brand-new processor and a physical redesign that's not even a year old make the 9310 a safe buy for people who don't want their expensive investment to be upstaged by something vastly better in a few months.
The XPS 13 is admirably thin and feels satisfyingly solid, if not particularly lightweight. It measures 0.58 by 11.6 by 7.8 inches (HWD) and weighs 2.8 pounds in the touch-screen configuration reviewed here. Versions without a touch screen weigh slightly less, at 2.64 pounds, since they lack the touch version's Gorilla Glass 6 coating over the display. Either of those weight measurements compare favorably with the Dell's archrival, the Apple MacBook Pro 13, which weighs 3.1 pounds. But the XPS 13 is still meaningfully heavier than the very lightest models on the market, such as Acer's 1.96-pound Swift 7 flagship.
The XPS 13's additional heft accommodates high-quality materials and a sleek design. The density of the build is apparent as soon as you slide the system out of its sleek white box and run your fingers over the aluminum lid and edges. Dell says the edges are anodized twice to prevent scratch damage from repeated plugging and unplugging of peripherals. Opening the lid results in even more to ogle. The two color options include Platinum Silver with a black carbon-fiber palm rest or Frost White with an Alpine White composite-fiber palm rest. Our review unit uses the latter scheme, and it's gorgeous. The palm rest is especially snazzy, and it incorporates a UV- and stain-resistant coating to prevent yellowing and discoloration.
If you like the XPS 13's styling, you’ll be interested to know Dell has expanded it across the range, which includes the latest versions of the larger XPS 15 and XPS 17 laptops. This is a similarly unified approach to the one Apple takes with the styling of the MacBook Air and the two sizes of the MacBook Pro. Whether you're looking for an ultraportable for frequent travels or a large-screen machine with serious computing power, there's an XPS for you. There's even a 2-in-1 version of the XPS 13, which sports a 360-degree hinge that lets you convert the laptop into a tablet.
An Exceptional Display, Even Without 4K
The XPS 13's display is available in three versions, all of which feature an unusual 16:10 aspect ratio instead of the more familiar 16:9. The former results in additional vertical space, which is handy for when you're scrolling through websites or updating lengthy documents.
Our review unit has a 1,920-by-1,200-pixel touch panel. Thanks to the aspect ratio, the resolution is a bit higher than full HD (1,920 by 1,080 pixels), but considerably less than the Retina Display of the MacBook Pro or the PixelSense display of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3. However, the XPS 13 can be configured with a 3,840-by-2,400-pixel panel that leapfrogs not only those two laptops, but also the dimensions of standard widescreen 4K displays (3,840 by 2,160 pixels).
Once you’ve used a 4K screen, it's hard to go back to full HD, with its occasionally visible pixels and slightly grainy text. Perhaps that's why Apple and Microsoft don't offer full HD versions of the MacBook Pro or Surface Laptop 3. But I actually don't mind the XPS 13's screen resolution. Images appear especially vivid, which I attribute partly to the taller aspect ratio that results in slightly more pixels than a 1080p display and partly to the Dell's 100% sRGB and 90% DCI-P3 gamut support. I also appreciate the extraordinary rated maximum of 500 nits of brightness, which means the XPS 13 can even be viewed comfortably outdoors (though not in direct sunlight) if you crank up the brightness setting.
So I'm not recommending the 4K screen over the full HD one in this case. That's an added benefit to people watching their budgets, since the 4K version does add to the cost. On the other hand, I recommend staying away from Dell's entry-level screen, which is the same as the one on our review unit except that it lacks touch support. That's a shame, since many XPS 13 competitors offer touch support standard, with the notable exception of the MacBook Pro.
Feats of Miniaturization
In an impressive achievement in downsizing, a 720p webcam complete with IR face recognition sensors is located above the center of the display. It offers average video quality for a laptop camera, which is to say that indoor shots are slightly noisy and fuzzy compared with the quality from the cameras of even a midrange phone. Dell says it has improved the camera quality by adding a new four-piece lens and temporal noise reduction, but if you're planning to hold a Skype session in your living room at night, you'll still probably want to use your phone. The camera's chief innovation is its minuscule size—the XPS 13's screen occupies 91.5% of the footprint of the chassis, which means the bezels surrounding it are razor-thin.
One of the consequences of a compact laptop is less room for ports. The XPS 13's are limited to two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 4 support, a headphone jack, and a microSD card reader. This means you'll need an adapter or dongle to plug in an external monitor or USB Type-A peripherals. (Dell thoughtfully includes a USB adapter in the box.) This could be a drawback for the work-from-home crowd, who will likely be using the XPS 13 with an external display. While it's true that the XPS 13 is simply following the trend toward fewer and fewer ports, its selection is stingy even among its peers. The MacBook Pro offers as many as four USB-C ports, all of which support Thunderbolt 3.
The ultraportable offers the latest Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5 wireless connectivity standards, good for stable internet connections and wireless keyboards and mice. But many users will happily stick with the built-in touchpad and keyboard, both of which I find to be comfortable for short typing and tapping sessions. The large keycaps and extensive surface area of the pad are welcome improvements over the cramped equivalents on some competitors, including the Asus ZenBook 13. The power button in the upper right corner of the keyboard doubles as a fingerprint reader for password-free logins to your Windows 10 account.
Audio quality from the XPS 13's stereo speakers is excellent. Combined, they deliver up to 4 watts of output, and they're balanced enough to give the laptop far richer and more dimensional sound than you'd expect from such a compact package. Much of the audio emanates through a grille on the bottom of the laptop, but voice tracks and other treble notes in a few movie trailers that I watched never sounded muffled.
Dell supports the XPS 13 with a one-year hardware warranty, and offers optional extensions up to four years for an additional charge.
Testing the XPS 13: Goodbye Ice, Hello Tiger
The new XPS 13 ditches Intel's 10th Generation "Ice Lake" processors in favor of the latest Tiger Lake CPUs. There's not a huge difference between the two, but we did see some modest performance improvements on a few of our benchmark tests compared with the 9300 model. Our test unit comes with a Core i7-1165G7, a quad-core chip with Hyper-Threading that runs at a base frequency of 2.8GHz, up from 1.3GHz in the equivalent 10th Generation Core i7. The higher clock speed can improve performance on certain tasks, though the total number of cores and threads remains the same.
While the XPS 13 has always relied on integrated graphics rather than a discrete GPU, this model boasts Intel's latest Iris Xe silicon, replacing the Iris Plus graphics of its predecessor. Our review unit also has 16GB of memory and a 512GB solid-state drive, which should be sufficient for most users. The entry-level configuration, meanwhile, comes with a Core i3, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. That's a relatively skimpy set of components compared with the MacBook Pro, whose entry-level configuration includes a Core i5. But the entry-level MacBook Pro is $300 more than the base XPS 13.
Below is a list of specs for our XPS 13 tester and a few other comparable laptops we've tested recently, including the Apple MacBook Pro, the Asus ZenBook 13, the Razer Blade Stealth 13, and the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3.
Of the group, the Asus is the only other contender to sport a Tiger Lake CPU.
CPU, Media, and Storage Tests
Our first look at overall performance comes from the Windows-only PCMark performance suite developed by the benchmark specialists at UL (formerly Futuremark). The PCMark 10 test we run simulates different real-world productivity and content-creation workflows. We use it to assess overall system performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet jockeying, web browsing, and videoconferencing. The XPS 13 performs very well, though essentially the same as the similarly equipped ZenBook 13.
PCMark 8, meanwhile, has a storage subtest that we use to assess the speed of the system's boot drive. Like PCMark 10, it yields a proprietary numeric score (higher numbers are better). Most recent laptops with SSDs perform roughly equally well in this test, which is the case here.
Next is Maxon's CPU-crunching Cinebench R15 test, which is fully threaded to make use of all available processor cores and threads. Cinebench stresses the CPU rather than the GPU to render a complex image. The result is a proprietary score indicating a PC's suitability for processor-intensive workloads. The hierarchy on this test is clear: the Ice Lake-based Surface Laptop 3 and Blade Stealth 13 are a rung below the Tiger Lake XPS 13 and ZenBook 13. The MacBook Pro's Core i5 processor is an overachiever.
Cinebench is often a good predictor of our Handbrake video-editing trial, another tough, threaded workout that's highly CPU-dependent and scales well with cores and threads. In it, we put a stopwatch on test systems as they transcode a standard 12-minute clip of 4K video to a 1080p MP4 file. It's a timed test, and lower results are better. The XPS 13 is locked in a surprising tie for first place with the MacBook Pro, with the Asus not far behind.
We also run a custom Adobe Photoshop image-editing benchmark. Using an early 2018 release of the Creative Cloud version of Photoshop for Windows and the latest Photoshop CC release for macOS, we apply a series of 10 complex filters and effects to a standard JPEG test image. We time each operation and, at the end, add up the total execution time. As with Handbrake, lower times are better here. The Photoshop test stresses the CPU, storage subsystem, and RAM. The XPS 13 performs well—better than the Apple, but not quite as quick as the ZenBook 13.
Graphics and Battery Life Testing
One of the main benefits of Intel's Tiger Lake platform is the switch from the older Iris Plus to Iris Xe graphics. This improvement actually has only a small impact in our graphics testing, which uses the Windows-only 3DMark and Superposition game simulations to render sequences of highly detailed, gaming-style 3D graphics that emphasize particles and lighting.
We run two different 3DMark subtests, Sky Diver and Fire Strike, which are suited to different types of systems. Both are DirectX 11 benchmarks, but Sky Diver is more suited to laptops and midrange PCs, while Fire Strike is more demanding and made for high-end PCs to strut their stuff. The results are proprietary scores.
Like 3DMark, the Superposition test renders and pans through a detailed 3D scene and measures how the system copes. In this case, it's rendered in the company's eponymous Unigine engine, offering a different 3D workload scenario than 3DMark for a second opinion on the machine's graphical prowess.
The Iris Xe laptops show a slight advantage over their Iris Plus counterparts, but the difference isn't remarkable. It's also much less of an advantage than what is offered by an entry-level gaming GPU like the Nvidia processor in the Blade Stealth 13. The bottom line for graphics output is that the XPS 13 will be able to handle pretty much anything you throw at it except for intensive 3D games, which require a dedicated GPU to run smoothly. (For more analysis of Iris Xe performance, check out our Iris Xe primer and in-depth Tiger Lake testing feature.)
Equipped with a 52-watt-hour battery that lasted for 15 hours in our video playback test, the XPS 13 should easily survive an entire workday away from a power outlet...
That's a very good result, even though it's "just" in line with what the competition offers and actually slightly shorter than the 17.5 hours we saw from the previous model 9300.
Hear Me Roar: Today's Best High-End Ultraportable
The XPS 13 is an exceptional ultraportable whose key strengths are its cutting-edge computing components in a beautifully designed, exceptionally well-constructed chassis. These are rare achievements even in the crowded field of premium ultraportable laptops. Operating system differences aside, the XPS 13 is probably a better choice than the MacBook Pro for most people right now, since Apple's notebook is using older-generation processors that face imminent replacement.
One of the few reasons not to choose the XPS 13 is if you're seeking a robust gaming experience on the side. Intel's Iris Xe silicon is pretty good if you are willing to dial things back (this is not the integrated graphics of a year or two ago), but even so, the Nvidia GeForce GTX-equipped Blade Stealth 13 is likely a more prudent choice, at the minor expense of shorter battery life, a not-quite-as-sleek chassis, and an older-generation CPU. Otherwise, the XPS 13 is the cream of the crop, and retains our Editors' Choice award as 2020's best high-end ultraportable laptop to date.

Editor’s picks
How to choose the best laptop for you
Buying a brand-new laptop is no easy task.
What do you need your laptop for?
Your personal requirements should dictate what sort of laptop you go for. A typical university student will have different tech needs than a professional video editor. Some may need a laptop that can process large files at rapid speeds, while others may just want to use Google Docs or browse the web. Ultimately, it all comes down to what you want your laptop to do.
What about performance and battery life?
The most powerful laptops are those with the most powerful CPUs and the highest amount of RAM. A laptop’s CPU power is measured in GHz and each processor has a baseline frequency as well as a maximum frequency.
A MacBook Pro (or Windows equivalent like the Dell XPS 15) has a much more powerful CPU and more RAM than a cheap Chromebook because people expect them to run multiple demanding applications.
Battery size is measured in milliamp hours (mAH) or watt hours (Wh) – the biggest battery will (in theory) last the longest, but it all depends on how much power the device uses. An ultra-budget laptop with a small battery size may last longer than a premium notebook with a huge battery because its internal hardware isn’t as demanding. We run a standardised video rundown test on every single laptop we review, with the longest-lasting performers tending to be a mix between efficient high-end laptops and low-powered Chromebooks.
What operating system should you go for?
Whether it’s Windows, macOS or Chrome OS, each operating system has its own strengths and weaknesses. macOS is only found in Apple’s own laptops, while Windows powers all sorts of laptops from manufacturers such as Acer, Asus and Lenovo. Google’s low-powered Chrome OS is also rising in popularity and can be found on a wide range of devices.
What’s the best display resolution?
When it comes to laptop displays, the resolution isn’t everything. If the same laptop has the option of a Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display and a 4K (3,840 x 2,160) display, the latter is usually more expensive. Typically, a laptop with a higher resolution panel will also suffer a bit in the battery life department than its lower-resolution equivalent.
The quality of a laptop’s display has little to do with the resolution of the screen. There’s never a guarantee of a laptop’s maximum brightness, colour accuracy or contrast ratio. We measure all of these when testing each laptop, and a sub-par display can ruin an otherwise great laptop.
How many ports should a laptop have?
In addition to a power socket and headphone jack, most new laptops will come with at least a couple of USB 3.0 ports and one USB Type-C slot. When it comes to connections, though, the more the merrier. It’s extremely useful to have a mini-DisplayPort or HDMI connector for hooking up the laptop to additional monitors. An SD card reader doesn’t hurt either – an addition that’s sorely lacking on Apple’s MacBook Pro laptops.

Best laptops you can buy in 2020
1. Dell XPS 13: The best Windows laptop you can buy
Price: From £1,399 l Buy now from Amazon
The 2020 Dell XPS has had a price hike this year but it’s the best ultraportable laptop money can buy. This is a laptop that gets everything right, from the brilliant build quality and colour accurate display to the fabulous keyboard and a generous specification for the money.
New features for the 2020 refresh include a Windows Hello-compatible webcam and a taller more work-friendly aspect ratio of 16:10.
As ever, there’s an XPS 13 for every budget. You can choose from various combinations of specifications, including an Intel Core i5-1035G1 or a Core i7-1065G7, 8GB or 16GB of RAM and a 512GB or 1TB PCIe SSD.
With great battery life to go with nippy performance across the board, the Dell XPS 13 remains the Windows 10 ultraportable to beat. It’s better value for money than the MacBook Pro 13 that’s for sure.

2. Bmax X14: The best cheap laptop you’ve never heard of
Price: £412 | Buy now from AliExpress
There are loads of dirt-cheap Chinese laptops around but a lot of them aren’t as good as they look. The Bmax X14 bucks that trend: it’s a genuinely good laptop for not much more than you’d pay for an iPad.
At the price, you might expect it to cut corners in key areas but that’s not the case. It runs Windows 10 Home, comes with a 1.1GHz quad-core Intel Celeron N4100 processor, has 8GB of RAM and a decent 256GB of storage, too. It has a decent 14in 1,080p touchscreen, a slim well-made metal chassis and doesn’t weigh much, either, tipping the scale at only a few grammes more than the far more expensive Microsoft Surface Laptop 3.
In fact, we can’t fault the Bmax X14 for performance, build quality or value for this sort of money. It’s the best cheap Chinese laptop we’ve come across; indeed, it’s the best budget laptop around right now, full stop.

3. Google Pixelbook Go: Not just a good Chromebook
Price: From £629 | Buy now from John Lewis
It might “only” be a Chromebook but the Pixelbook Go is one of our favourite laptops, full stop. Not only is it light and amazingly slim it’s also an absolute pleasure to work on, with one of the best keyboards we’ve come across on any laptop anywhere. Couple that with a solid 13.3in 1080p touchscreen and better battery life than on most Windows 10 or MacOS based machines and you have a simply superb machine. Chrome OS doesn’t prove an impediment to carrying out most office-based tasks these days; only video editors and designers might struggle.
The only worry – if you could call it that – is that the Pixelbook Go has an eighth-generation Core i5 (coupled with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage) instead of the very latest tenth generation-silicon. It’s still slick enough for any job you’re want to carry out on it and, if you want something more powerful and luxurious, you can always opt for the Core i7 model, which comes with an even sharper 4K display. You might have to sacrifice some battery life here, though.

4. Honor MagicBook 14: A luxury laptop for less
Price: £550 | Buy now from John Lewis
Most premium ultraportables cost well north of £1,000 these days but not the Honor MagicBook 14. Building on the experience of Huawei and its popular Matebook X Pro and D laptops, this is a simply sumptuous laptop for a ludicrously small amount of cash.
The design and build quality is a match for more expensive machines, with an all-metal chassis and a slim, lightweight profile. And it’s as powerful as laptops costing many hundreds of pounds more thanks to its AMD Ryen 3500U processor, it comes with 8GB of RAM and a speedy 256GB SSD and battery life is decent, too.
The only area in which this laptop falls short is in the positioning of the 720p webcam in the keyboard, which results in a rather ugly camera angle. Given how good the rest of the laptop is, however, I’d be willing to put up with this small irritation or buy a separate webcam to improve video calling. This is truly one of the biggest laptop bargains of 2020.
Key specs – Honor MagicBook 14
Processor: Quad-core AMD Ryzen 3500U Screen resolution: 1,920 x 1,080 RAM: 8GB Weight: 1.38kg Total storage: 256GB or 512GB SSD

5. Huawei MateBook D 15: Another unbeatable budget machine
Price: £600 | Buy now from Argos
Like the Honor MagicBook 14, the MateBook D 15 is built around the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor; and again, like the MagicBook, it’s a bit of a steal. Costing a mere £550, it delivers excellent performance in a very nicely engineered metal chassis.
The IPS display is pretty good given the price, with decent viewing angles, although it’s only 1080p and isn’t particularly colour accurate. But with a comfortable keyboard and touchpad, this makes an excellent purchase for those looking for a big-screened portable laptop for not much money.

6. Microsoft Surface Laptop 3
Price: From £949 | Buy from Microsoft
We loved the previous two Surface Laptops but Microsoft’s third-generation is the best of the lot. With prices that start at a reasonable £949 and absolutely gorgeous design, it really is one of the best laptops you can buy at the price.
Microsoft has added USB-C at last, refined the design and the latest tenth-gen Intel Core i5 and i7 chips to ensure tip-top performance and decent battery life. The big change this year, however, is that there’s now a 15in model available for those who want a little more screen real estate.
The 13.5in remains our favourite, however, balancing portability and power with perfect poise. This is one fabulous machine.

7. LG Gram 17 (2020): The best big-screened laptop for home working
Price: From £1,416 | Buy now from Amazon
The LG Gram 17 sits in a category all its own: it’s a lightweight ultrabook with a huge 17in display. What use is that, I hear you cry? Well, it gives you a lot more screen space to spread your work onto and without the enormous weight penalty that larger laptops usually inflict. In fact, at 1.35kg, this 17in machine is barely any heavier than many a 13in laptop, which is an impressive feat.
You’re not paying a huge amount more for the privilege of that larger display, either, with the Intel Core i5 (10th gen) model costing £1,416 and including 16GB of RAM and a sizeable 512GB SSD. That price rises to £1,549 for the Core i7 variant, which is a very reasonable price. Even more impressively, that big screen has little impact on battery life.
This is a stunning laptop, in our opinion. It offers something completely different from your run of the mill machine, doesn’t cost a huge amount and is an immensely usable and likeable laptop to boot.

8. Gigabyte Aorus 15G: The best gaming laptop of 2020 (so far)
Price: From £1,899 | Buy now from Scan
The Razer Blade 15 might have been the best gaming laptop we saw in 2019 but in 2020 Razer is going to have to go some to beat the Gigabyte Aorus 15G. Equipped with a full-size mechanical keyboard, the latest 10th gen Intel Comet Lake chips and Nvidia’s GeForce RTX Super series graphics, it’s an absolute beast and is capable of playing the latest, most demanding games without breaking a sweat.
This is a truly exceptional gaming laptop. It has a 244Hz display that means you’ll be able to play less demanding games at incredibly high frame rates. Despite having a full-travel mechanical keyboard, it doesn’t weigh more than the average workstation laptop and its CNC aluminium chassis feels like it could survive a bomb blast. And in addition to all that, pound for pound, it’s pretty good value, too.

9. Dell Latitude 3300: A sturdy mid-range machine
Price: From £741 | Buy now from Dell
The education-oriented Dell Latitude 3300 won’t deliver the frills and thrills you’ll get from most of the laptops on this list but as a mid-range device, it’s tough to beat. For the money, you’ll get a rugged 13.3in notebook powered by a late-2017 Intel Core i5-8250U that’s backed by 8GB of RAM, in addition to a speedy 256GB PCIe SSD.
Out of all the mid-tier Windows machines we’ve tested lately, there’s nothing that competes with the Latitude 3300 when it comes to raw CPU power. The battery life is well above competitors within the price range too, so it’s a great option for students or professionals after a compact machine for working on the move.

10. Microsoft Surface Pro 7: Still the best hybrid
Price: From £807 | Buy now from Amazon
Microsoft launched two Surface Pro models in its 2019/20 round of updates: the Surface Pro 7 and Surface Pro X. Of the two devices, the Surface Pro X is the most interesting but it isn’t particularly practical due to the fact that it uses an ARM chip. The Surface Pro 7 isn’t much of an update but it remains the best 2-in-1 tablet/laptop hybrid you can buy.
Essentially, the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is the same as the Surface Pro 6. You still have to purchase the keyboard as an optional extra and the same goes for the Surface Pen Stylus. It has upgraded internal, however, with Microsoft moving from 8th-gen Intel processors to the latest 10th-gen silicon and that means faster performance overall and better battery life.
If you can find the Surface Pro 6 at a reduced price, it’s probably best just to opt for that. However going forward, that’s going to be more and more difficult to do.

11. Linx 12X64: A budget-friendly 2-in-1 bargain
Price: £300 | Buy now from Amazon
Looking to spend as little as possible? The Linx 12X64 is an incredibly cheap alternative to the Microsoft Surface Pro that can be used as both a tablet and a laptop. Now available for £230, the Linx 12X64 laptop comes bundled with its own kickstand and detachable keyboard, whereas the keyboard cover for the Microsoft Surface Pro costs £120 alone – never mind the laptop itself. Now, at this price, you can’t expect great performance, but if you need a bare-bones device for browsing the web, writing an essay or knocking up a spreadsheet then the Linx 12X64 will see you through.
With a 1.8GHz Intel Atom x5-Z8350 CPU and 4GB RAM, it’s got about as much power as a modern mid-range smartphone, which is to say, very little. Having said that, the FHD (1,920 x 1,080) display is a lot nicer than you’d expect and the 64GB of eMMC storage gives good performance. And did we mention how cheap it is? Because it’s really, really cheap.

12. Acer Nitro 7 (2019): The best entry-level gaming laptop
Price: £1,200 | Buy now from Currys PC World
Searching for a well-priced gaming laptop that puts performance first? The Acer Nitro 7 (2019) is the machine you’re after, so search no further. It’s got oodles of power inside it and, at only £1,200, it outpaces gaming laptops that cost hundreds more.
Acer has packed this model out with an Intel Core i7-9750H (up to 4.5GHz) plus a gargantuan 32GB RAM and a hefty Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660Ti. The 144hz display is perfectly decent and, while the materials might not be as robust as one of Razer’s flagships, this a good quality build considering the cost. Affordable and likeable, the Acer Nitro 7 is ready for Triple-A gaming right out of the box.

13. Apple MacBook Pro 16in: The best MacBook ever
Price: From £2,169 | Buy now from John Lewis
Apple’s MacBook Pro laptops continue to improve year after year and 2019’s refresh is no different. A new, slightly larger 16in model has replaced the 15in Apple MacBook Pro and the 13in MacBook Pro also gets improved internals.
It’s the 16in MacBook Pro that steals all the headlines, however, with a new more comfortable keyboard, wide gamut IPS display, amazing studio-quality microphones and improved speakers. It’s the most impressive MacBook Pro we’ve ever reviewed.
Both the 13in and 16in models of MacBook Pro are powerful machines. The 13in is available with a base specification of a 1.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD; you can also choose up to an 8-core 2.8GHz Core i7 with 16GB of RAM and 2TB of storage.
The 16in model starts with a 2.6GHz 6-core 2.6GHz Intel Core i7 with16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. It can be specified all the way up to an eight-core 2.3GHz Core i9 processor with up to 64GB of RAM and a whopping 8TB of SSD storage.
Both machines are on the expensive side but just as beautifully built as ever. The 16in model, however, is our favourite.

14. Lenovo Yoga C940 (14in): The best 2-in-1 ultraportable
Price: From £1,100 | Buy now from Lenovo
Lenovo was the first manufacturer to perfect the 360-degree laptop hinge and its Yoga range of machines has continued to perfect it ever since. The Lenovo Yoga C940 is the latest and greatest example of the genre and squeezes in the latest CPUs from Intel alongside an ingenious soundbar speaker that sounds great, built right into the hinge of the laptop itself.
Make no mistake, this is a beautifully made machine. It’s built entirely from aluminium with an attractive, wedge-shaped profile. Its keyboard and touchpad work perfectly and it has either a 1080p or a 4K display, and both use IPS technology. We were sent the 1080p model for our review, which performed admirably in our technical tests. Perhaps the display’s most endearing quality, however, is that it’s stylus compatible, with the stylus included in the box and stowable in a slot at the edge of the hinge.
All of this, coupled with sterling battery life (11hrs 13mins in our tests) from the C940’s sizeable 60Wh battery, go together to produce a laptop of fine pedigree and one that just about edges in front of the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 as the best portable 2-in-1 laptop money can buy.
