National Bourbon Heritage Month
National Bourbon Heritage Month is celebrated annually in the United States during the month of September. It's a time to honor and recognize the rich history and cultural significance of bourbon whiskey, one of America's most iconic spirits. Here's a summary of what National Bourbon Heritage Month represents:
Celebration of Bourbon: This month-long celebration pays tribute to bourbon whiskey, which is often considered America's native spirit. Bourbon is made primarily from corn and aged in new charred oak barrels, giving it a distinct flavor profile.
Historical Significance: Bourbon has a deep historical connection to the United States, with its roots dating back to the late 18th century. It is believed to have originated in Kentucky, although its exact birthplace is debated.
Bourbon Production: National Bourbon Heritage Month is an opportunity to highlight the production process of bourbon. To be classified as bourbon, the spirit must meet specific legal requirements, including being made in the United States and containing at least 51% corn in its mash bill.
Kentucky Bourbon Trail: Many bourbon enthusiasts use this month to visit the famous Kentucky Bourbon Trail, a collection of distilleries in the state that produce some of the finest bourbons in the world. These distillery tours provide insights into bourbon-making traditions.
Tastings and Events: Throughout September, various events, tastings, and festivals are organized to celebrate bourbon. These gatherings allow enthusiasts to sample different bourbons, learn about their unique flavors, and appreciate the craftsmanship behind each bottle.
Cocktail Culture: Bourbon serves as a key ingredient in classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned, Mint Julep, and Bourbon Sour. National Bourbon Heritage Month encourages people to explore the versatility of bourbon in mixology.
Economic Impact: The bourbon industry has a significant economic impact on the United States. It creates jobs, supports agriculture (through corn production), and contributes to tourism, especially in regions like Kentucky.
Education and Awareness: The month provides opportunities for educational initiatives about the history, production, and responsible consumption of bourbon. It encourages enthusiasts and newcomers alike to appreciate the craftsmanship behind this beloved spirit.
Community and Tradition: Bourbon has a way of bringing people together. Whether it's sharing a glass with friends or participating in bourbon-related events, this month fosters a sense of community among bourbon aficionados.
Responsibility: While celebrating bourbon, it's important to emphasize responsible drinking. National Bourbon Heritage Month encourages individuals to enjoy bourbon in moderation and promotes safe and responsible consumption.
In summary, National Bourbon Heritage Month is a time to raise a glass and toast to the unique American spirit known as bourbon. It's an occasion to delve into its history, savor its flavors, and appreciate the cultural significance of this beloved whiskey. Whether you're a seasoned bourbon connoisseur or just beginning to explore this spirit, September offers a chance to immerse yourself in the world of bourbon.

King Felipe will open the Museum of the Royal Collections this june:
The Royal Collections Gallery, the most important museum project in Spain for decades, opens this summer. It is located beside the Royal Palace of Madrid.
The building is dug out of rock, from the Campo del Moro gardens to the Armería square. It has two entrances: from the square, at the level of the Royal Palace, and from the Cuesta de la Vega, at the highest point of the Campo del Moro gardens. The views of Madrid, the Casa de Campo parkland and the mountains are incomparable.
From this summer onwards, the Gallery will be the main vehicle for promoting Patrimonio Nacional's cultural activities. Its aim is to display the richness, excellence and diversity of the Royal Collections as well as serving as a showcase for all the Royal Sites. It will also help publicise the work of Patrimonio Nacional in supporting the Spanish head of state and in restoring, conserving, disseminating and safeguarding the impressive historical, cultural and natural heritage it manages in six autonomous regions.
Ana de la Cueva, president of Patrimonio Nacional, told the Guardian during a preview tour: “Unlike other museums in Madrid, this is a museum of different collections – it’s not just a museum of painting or sculpture.”
“This museum shows all the luxury goods that our monarchs collected: fans, clocks, glassware, reliquaries, tapestries, rugs, furniture, gilt ware and musical instruments.”
In its different areas – the Habsburg monarchs, the Bourbon dynasty and 20th century Spain – the gallery aims to gather together five centuries of history and to map both the changing country and the changing tastes of its rulers.
De la Cueva said: “You can see the history of Spain in the history of these collections, and I think that really complements the royal palace. Many of these pieces have never been seen and they’re just spectacular when it comes to the artists who made them.”

𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐒: Closed started for @thunyielding 𝐋𝐎𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: The Great Hall at Hampton court.  𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄: November of 1559
Tumblr media
Throughout the months spent sojourning at Hampton court, the Queen of Scots learned that her coats lined with fine ermine fur would do little to prevent the chill of England's November frost from creeping into her bones. The golden rays of France's Summer sun kept the glorious little jewel swaddled in eternal warmth—reinsuring both her comfort and radiance whilst serving as her husband's consort. It was her uncles that spearheaded her claim in this frost-laden country, those greedy statesmen who delighted in the idea of their young niece seated upon the throne of England where she might finally restore the TRUE faith in these godless lands. Two thrones would never be enough for the Guise when Mary shared the blood of several prominent European dynasties. More than anything, the Queen understood that her kin's greed would spell her family's destruction should they be blinded by their own toxic ambition.
Behind her strolling in perfect unison followed four young ladies bearing their queen's namesake, donning a similar shade of elegant crimson as their mistress. Before Mary had been delivered to France as Henry II's prize, the four Marys were chosen as the Queen's chief ladies in waiting. Together, the four women modeled themselves after the glittering image of the Virgin mother and sought to serve their holy mistress as confidants and servants whilst she flourished under the tutelage of both her mother-in-law as well as her grandmother Antoinette de Bourbon. Like Mary, her ladies were rigorously trained to exhibit nothing less than what was expected of French excellence despite their Scottish origin. If the Pope and her uncles meant to dominate this court with carefully crafted lies, then Mary would put her charms to work if only to ease the the blow of their corruption. A slight upturn of rosebud lips could enchant even the most sheltered of English hearts and that, Mary decided, was how she would win this freezing country to her cause. By hook or by crook, the English would EMBRACE their Scottish neighbor as they would their own.
Though she had been rather off put by the lack of attention shown to her by the Tudor King, Mary was determined to treat with his Boleyn relatives regardless of their sordid past, heretic faith, and distasteful Dowager. If she could not build a lasting rapport with the King, Mary would find an ally in his sister—the previous lady regent. In truth, Mary knew little of her cousin, the Princess of England. The occasional reports from the French ambassador to England hardly provided a provided a satisfactory description of Elizabeth's appearance and temperament. As always, the defiant Queen decided that she would meet her cousin on her own terms and without her uncle's ever cautious advice.
At first sight of England's precious diamond in the Great Hall of Hampton court, The Scottish Queen's four ladies simultaneously ladies sank into a low and tirelessly rehearsed curtsy as a sign of respect for her Highness—further exemplifying the prestige of good French breeding. Of course, Mary did not bow, for she was a Queen in her own RIGHT and needn't do anything except nod her auburn head at her cousin and lace a subtle smile along the surface of her pouty lips.
"My sweet cousin." She began, her voice ever warm and dulcet as her French lilt dominated her tone. "Too long have I waited to enjoy the company of my kin." Mary added as her eyes quickly scanned the stature of the Princess Elizabeth. The Queen could not help but compare herself to her cousin who stood nearly a foot shorter than herself but still bore their lineage's famed copper hair. Elizabeth was a Tudor through and through, and yet the glimmer of her Boleyn heritage showed proudly through several of her features. A slight wave of her hand sent the four Marys that smiled sweetly behind her away with another elegant curtsy. Like sparkling ORNAMENTS meant to be admired but not heard, her ladies would disperse and position themselves into important circles that would bring their queen good fortune in the form of Boleyn secrets. "Should time permit, I would like nothing more than to spend this eve with you."

El Museo del Prado: A Legacy of 200 Years
El Museo del Prado, established in 1819 and posits itself as the main cultural center of Spain, serves as one of Europe’s premier art institutions. The beginnings of the formal museum were not found in the halls of the monarchy, but rather in the palaces of the nobility; instead of just a show of artworks, nobles took more of an art historical approach to their collections. However, it wasn’t until the reign of Joseph Bonaparte that plans for a national museum were fostered. Nonetheless, Ferdinand VII was the individual that allowed those plans to come to fruition, not necessarily as a way to promote civil rights, a legacy of the French Revolution, but instead as a way to cement a national heritage for his country, and also as a reminder of the extent of his power. The building that serves as the museum was designed by Juan de Villanueva in 1785, and was initially meant for an academy of natural history. Thus, despite the change in purpose, the building, and later, the Museum itself was meant as a place of learning and a nexus of Spanish scholasticism. Because of this, the Prado acts as a landmark of sorts, highlighting Spain’s desire to investigate deeper into the Spanish school, an example of Spanish national identity, a far cry from the outward approach to art two centuries earlier.
Since its inception, the Museo del Prado has existed as a synonym of Spanish art, due to its collection of the most Spanish artworks in Europe. However, most of its collection comes from the Habsburg and Bourbon houses, which not only consisted of Spanish art, but also those of Flemish, Italian, and French masters. Thus, the Prado’s collection is able to facilitate a conversation across temporalities, and quite possibly serves as one of the driving vehicles towards modernity. The Prado was created as one way to establish a national heritage of Spain, one that would feature its absolute monarch, Ferdinand VII. Additionally, art held a greater purpose than instruments of ornamentation, rather as a display of wealth and power for the royal family and their guests. The implementation of these great works into a public collection just serves as a reminder of the reach of Ferdinand’s absolute rule, while also fostering a more modern approach to public spaces, which gave more people access and knowledge about Spain’s role in the art realm. Even the building’s neoclassical style serves as a reference to the country's consumption of outside influences, but still suggests a identity that is all its own. Thus, by the time it adopted its current name, the Museo Nacional del Prado, Spain had just exiled its queen, Isabella II, serving as a reflection of Spanish sentiments, then and now. Fascinatingly, the museum was established in 1819, which was almost thirty years since the start of the French Revolution. The idea of a museum is a product of the Enlightenment, an antithesis to Ferdinand's total control over the state. However, through this museum Ferdinand’s power was placed on full display: the pride for his country, the artistry that it produced, and the community that it fostered grew in influence. By the start of the museum’s history, it contained 311 paintings and its catalogue was only published in Spanish; as time passed however, the collection grew, and the museum catalogue was no longer printed in Spanish, but also in French and Italian. The Prado’s influence is no longer restricted to just those of Spanish society, but spreads to a greater audience outside of the country who are then able to witness its influence.
The museum’s impact remained a constant throughout the nineteenth and beginnings of the twentieth century. However, that influence was tested with the start of the Spanish Civil War. The Civil War of Spain, which took place between 1936 to 1939, was a war of differing ideologies that were spreading through Europe, and could be considered a smaller scale of World War II, set to occur months after General Francisco Franco’s victory in Spain. The war was fought between the Soviet supported Republicans, who wanted a democratic republic, titled the Second Republic of Spain. Fighting against the Republicans were the Nationalists, comprised of mainly monarchists, who were supported by fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. By the end of the Spanish Civil War, however, the Republicans had lost control of the country, and Franco, the leader of the Nationalist faction, rose to power, establishing a military dictatorship until his death in 1975. During the fighting that broke out in all corners of the country, one of the main vulnerabilities of the Spanish was the art that they held, most of it centered in the Museo del Prado. This need to protect the cultural legacy of Spanish artists illustrates the cemented national heritage that Spain had formed over the past century through the Prado’s existence. Two of Spain’s great masterpieces, The 2nd and 3rd of May, 1808 by Francisco Goya, were transported on lorries to Valencia, then to Girona, even though they ultimately suffered damage from a train crash in the village of Biencarló. Damage aside, much of the Prado’s collection was protected by transporting these works to different parts of the country, especially to guard against the aerial bombings by Franco’s allies. Interestingly enough, both factions desired to protect the art of Spain, and months after fighting ceased, the artworks made their way back into the halls of the Prado in September 1939.  Thus, for three years, the doors of the Prado were sealed, a fitting image for a country whose identity and fate was, at the time, uncertain.
The story of the Prado is a fascinating one, due to its distinct history as one of the only collections of Spanish art. Because of this, the Prado and the institution of the museum lends itself to be a protector of sorts. As seen with the Prado’s response to the Spanish Civil War, the main function of a museum is not to only showcase works, but to preserve them for generations to come. Masterpieces such as Las Meninas are more than just objects of ornamentation, and contain great deals of aesthetic and historical value. Additionally, these bodies of works that museums hold are a way to view past societies, as they change fluidly through time. The walls of a museum never stay stagnant, and very few pieces are constantly on display; hence, the public that it represents changes as well, with a few important exceptions. A museum reminds us of those exceptions, or the landmarks which can detail where we have been, and ultimately shape where we need to go. One important question to consider now is how the museum in general can be relevant to those marginalized in the field of art history? Is it necessary to justify its existence, and how can those excluded be involved now in this cultural discourse, despite their positionality in previous centuries? It is an ongoing process, one that will not be solved anytime soon, but with time, an answer may be revealed.
The Prado represents many things: a physical embodiment of the country’s cultural heritage, a space for artistic scholasticism, or even simply a must-see during one’s trip to Madrid. According to Michael Novacek, museums serve as a “tangible record of life on Earth.” Thus, the record that the Prado maintains is an invaluable source of information to Spain and a greater audience abroad. Not only is the museum a center for creative expression and intellectualism, but serves a deeper purpose: allowing its visitors to regain a familiarity of the human experience. By viewing the world through these masterpieces, it can allow some to challenge the notions of our own society, even with voices from the past. The Prado is only one example of a museum, but is part of a tradition that has been integral to Spain for the past 200 years. For future generations, let us hope for 200 more.

out gallivanting I stumbled upon a rare beast I've been coveting from afar.
Okay, "stumbled upon" is mischaracterization. I dropped D at the outlets and drove as fast as I could, a half hour north, to one of the best bottle shops in the state. Big Red Liquors - Cask Strength is well, a store in the Big Red Liquor chain but it's Cask Strength so, you know, way better.
It's is actually better for my tastes. They are close enough to Taxman Brewing to carry all their small release beers I don't get distributed to the southeastern part of the state and they carry beer from Tennessee, I crave, and holy frijoles, beer from the now defunct Trappist brewery in Massachusetts, I've always wanted to try but have never found, despite quite alot of gallivanting.

Score!
There were more but, the real surprise, even more surprising than peach saison from Spencer, was this odd bird from Todd Leopold and Dickel.
I first read about this "new" old kind of whiskey more than a year ago. Leopold, considered a bit of a mad genius in the distilling world, posted a video where he proclaimed he'd discovered the long lost holy grail...of American whiskey.
He said, he was looking through some old... nevermind here's the video if your interested
youtube
So he had Vendome in Louisville make him a new old kind of (3 chamber) still and used a heritage variety rye. Because he's small fry, in the whiskey world, he partnered with Dickel who had some rye just lying around and they put out this new-old style whiskey. Exciting!
I looked all over but couldn't find it. I checked the plethora of "whiskey by the glass bars" in the Louisville area but nobody had it. After months of looking, I finally found a bottle!.. in the glass case at Total wine. No, I wasn't so enamored by the hoopla, I'd buy the bottle without tasting it first. That bottle was soon gone and - squirrel- I got distracted by other things.
When I saw it yesterday, I checked the price. $115 and my memory, honed by years of price checking, recognized it as the same price in Total Wine. So retail price. I've only paid so much for a bottle of whiskey a handful of times. I've established a firm policy of try before you buy at that price point.
So I asked if there was any bar nearby who might sell this whiskey by the glass. No, they said, so I paid for my beer and walked out. Then I walked back in. I'd noticed they advertised some of their whiskey as being available to taste. I asked if this one was, knowing it wasn't. I said, if I tasted it, and liked it, I'd buy it.
They said, let me check. A phone call later, they were opening a bottle - for me.
This was equal parts exciting and pressure.
I would finally get to taste this whiskey that promised to be...different. If it was, I'd gladly buy it. If it wasn't, I'd sadly buy it.
So, how was it?
Well it was different. In that it was rye whiskey that tasted like bourbon...to me. It reminded me of Knob Creek 120 proof, candy in a glass.
Keeping in mind, I'd just come from a brewery selling candied fruit beer in a glass, I was disappointed and relieved. At worst, it was whiskey I liked...but twice the price. Maybe it'll be different on a clean palate.
As I write this, my palate is unclean. I've been drinking
Tumblr media
all day. This beer features bitter hops and no candy I can discern. No matter.
Some day I'll try it and will be happy or not.

Climate of Kentucky
Tumblr media
See Weather Forecast for Kentucky today: https://weatherusa.app/kentucky
Kentucky, situated in the heart of the United States, is defined by its rivers, except for its southern boundary, shared with Tennessee along a nearly straight line of about 425 miles (685 km). To the southeast, Kentucky shares an irregular, mountainous border with Virginia. The Tug and Big Sandy rivers flow generally northwestward, separating Kentucky from West Virginia to the east and northeast. The state's northern boundary follows the Ohio River to the Mississippi, where it meets Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois en route. The Mississippi River then marks Kentucky's short southwestern border with Missouri. Frankfort, the capital, is nestled between two major cities, Louisville, situated on the Ohio River, and Lexington.

Before the arrival of Daniel Boone and other European frontiersmen in 1769, Kentucky was inhabited by various Native American peoples. The name "Kentucky" possibly derives from an Iroquois word for "prairie." Upon its admission to the union in 1792 as the 15th state and the first west of the Appalachian Mountains, Kentucky boasted nearly 73,000 settlers. By 1800, this number had swelled to approximately 220,000, including about 40,000 slaves.
Kentucky conjures a diverse array of images: coal mines, bourbon whiskey (named for Bourbon County, where it was developed), mountaineers, moonshiners, white-suited colonels and ladies sipping mint juleps on summertime verandas, horse breeding, and the prestigious Kentucky Derby. The state encompasses a blend of distinct regions and characters. The picturesque landscape of white fences, paddocks, tobacco fields, and pastures in the rolling Bluegrass region around Lexington reflects a genteel way of life reminiscent of Kentucky's ties with the antebellum South. Meanwhile, northern Kentucky, with its predominantly German heritage and suburban development pattern, reflects its connection to the urban North, particularly metropolitan Cincinnati, Ohio. Kentucky, historically situated at the crossroads of westward expansion, reflects a nuanced identity, embodying a state looking both back and ahead, with divided allegiance during the American Civil War. Notably, both Abraham Lincoln of the Union and Jefferson Davis of the Confederacy were born in Kentucky. With an area of 40,408 square miles (104,656 square km) and a population estimated at 4,526,154 in 2023, Kentucky continues to embody a rich and multifaceted heritage within the American landscape. See more: https://edition.cnn.com/2024/04/28/weather/plains-midwest-storms-tornadoes-climate-sunday/index.html
Kentucky's temperate climate and abundant rainfall contribute to its diverse vegetation, wildlife, and landscapes. The state experiences a mean annual temperature ranging between 55 and 60 °F (13 and 16 °C), with occasional extremes surpassing 110 °F (43 °C) or dropping below –30 °F (–34 °C). In the capital city, January and February typically see average high temperatures in the low 40s F (about 6 °C) and average lows in the low 20s F (
about –5 °C). In contrast, July and August witness temperatures rising from the low 60s F (about 17 °C) to the mid-80s F (about 30 °C) daily. The growing season spans approximately 170 to 210 days, depending on the location, with mean annual precipitation averaging about 45 inches (1,140 mm). Although fall months are typically drier, precipitation is generally well distributed throughout the year, with southern areas receiving nearly 50 inches (1,300 mm) annually compared to about 40 inches (1,000 mm) in the northeast. Thunderstorms are frequent, occasionally leading to flooding in eastern Kentucky, while prevailing winds primarily come from the south and southwest, though north and northwest winds bring winter chill.

Kentucky's climate and unique soils foster a wide array of vegetation, wildlife, and terrain. Once part of the hardwood forest region spanning from the Allegheny Mountains to the western prairies, Kentucky's landscape was primarily wooded with species like yellow poplar, oak, chestnut, sycamore, hickory, and walnut. However, by the late 19th century, much of the virgin forests had been depleted, largely due to post-Civil War logging. Through reforestation efforts in the 20th century, Kentucky managed to restore approximately 50 percent of its forest cover by the early 21st century. Blanton Forest and Lilley Cornett Woods, both located in southeastern Kentucky, are recognized as the state's only virgin forests. Kentucky's plant life ranges from native hardwoods and pines in the eastern slopes to bald cypresses in the western river marshes, with a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowering plants found throughout the state, including rhododendron, laurel, dogwood, redbud, and trillium in the mountainous regions.
Kentucky is home to a diverse array of bird and mammal species, including those native to the South as well as those typically found in the northern United States and Canada. While hoofed animals like bison, elk, and wolves have disappeared from the state, deer remain abundant, and elk have been successfully reintroduced. Panthers and bears, although less common, can still be found in eastern Kentucky. The state also hosts numerous small animals such as rabbits, squirrels, foxes, raccoons, opossums, woodchucks, and various bat and rodent species inhabiting its numerous caves.
The northwest corner of Kentucky serves as a vital stopover along one of the world's major migratory bird routes, attracting over 200 species of birds. The state as a whole hosts more than 300 bird species, with common sightings including cardinals (the state bird), robins, blue jays, doves, and sparrows. The marshlands along the southwestern Kentucky-Tennessee border serve as breeding grounds for various waterfowl species like the American egret, great blue heron, and double-crested cormorant. Additionally, wild turkeys, reminiscent of pioneer times, have seen a resurgence in population numbers.

Kentucky's diverse aquatic ecosystems, including swift mountain streams, expansive rivers, and man-made lakes, support a rich variety of fish species, totaling over 200. Despite being commonly associated with the Great Lakes region, the muskellunge (Esox masquinongy), the largest member of the pike family, can be found in the Licking, Green, and Barren rivers (a tributary of the Green River). Largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, bluegills, and crappies are among the commonly encountered fish species in Kentucky's waterways.

Unveiling the Mythos: Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon - More Than Just a Drink
Tumblr media
In the world of bourbon, there exists a name that reverberates with an almost mythical quality: Pappy Van Winkle. This distinguished bourbon has transcended its status as a mere spirit, ascending to the realm of legend and lore. But what lies behind the mystique of pappy van winkle bourbon, and why does it captivate the hearts and palates of whiskey enthusiasts worldwide?
To comprehend the allure of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon, one must first grasp its storied history. Rooted in the traditions of the American South, this bourbon traces its lineage back to the pioneering spirit of Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle Sr., who laid the groundwork for the brand's legacy at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Kentucky during the early 20th century. It was here that Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon began its journey towards becoming the epitome of craftsmanship and quality.
The tale of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon took a dramatic turn in the late 20th century when Julian Van Winkle III, Pappy's grandson, assumed the reins of the family business. Armed with a reverence for tradition and an unwavering commitment to excellence, Julian III embarked on a mission to elevate Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon to unprecedented heights of acclaim and admiration.
One of the defining characteristics of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon is its meticulous production process. Crafted in small batches using a closely guarded family recipe, this bourbon undergoes an aging process that spans years, not mere months. The result is a spirit of unparalleled depth and complexity, with flavors that unfold on the palate like a symphony of sensations.
Yet, it is not merely the taste of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon that sets it apart; it is also its scarcity. Each year, a limited number of bottles are released to the public, sparking a frenzy among collectors and enthusiasts alike. The quest for a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon has become a pilgrimage of sorts, with aficionados scouring the country in search of this elusive elixir.
But beyond its rarity and flavor, Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon embodies something deeper—a sense of heritage, tradition, and craftsmanship that harkens back to a bygone era. It is a reminder of the artistry and dedication that go into creating truly exceptional bourbon, and a testament to the enduring appeal of an American tradition.
Of course, the cult status of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon has not been without its controversies. Some critics argue that its astronomical price tag and limited availability have transformed it into a symbol of exclusivity rather than a celebration of bourbon craftsmanship. Others lament the commodification of what was once a humble spirit, fearing that its legendary status has eclipsed its true essence.
In the end, whether you view Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon as a symbol of connoisseurship or a victim of its own success, there's no denying its impact on the world of whiskey. From its humble beginnings in a Kentucky distillery to its status as a global phenomenon, Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon continues to captivate and inspire, reminding us that sometimes, the true value of a spirit lies not in its scarcity, but in the stories it tells and the traditions it upholds.

Redbreast Irish Whiskey releases Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition. A limited-edition single pot still Irish Whiskey.
Tumblr media
Press Release
NEW YORK ... Redbreast Irish Whiskey, produced by Irish Distillers at the world-renowned Midleton Distillery in Cork, Ireland, officially introduced Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition, a limited-edition single pot still Irish whiskey finished in tawny port casks from Portugal's breath-taking Douro Valley.
Expertly created by esteemed Master Blender Billy Leighton and Blender Dave McCabe, Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition is a single pot still Irish whiskey initially matured in a combination of bourbon and oloroso sherry casks. To add a new dimension to the flavor profile, a portion of these maturing whiskeys were recasked into tawny port casks for a number of years. All of the whiskeys were then skilfully blended and completed their maturation journey by marrying in freshly seasoned tawny port hogsheads for a final maturation period of 14-25 months.
The inspiration for Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition started 12 years ago, when Leighton took a trip to the Douro Valley in Portugal to visit some of Midleton Distillery's partner cooperages and winemakers.
"We were enjoying lunch with the late renowned winemaker Joaquim Anacleto and Gesprove Winemaker José Pinheiro overlooking the valley, discussing the various wines and spirits that had influenced our whiskeys," says Leighton. "And, being in the valley, we began to imagine how Tawny Port's intricate flavor profile could affect our whiskies. Curiosity took hold, and we decided to make this daydream a reality – and we are quite pleased with the impeccable result."
The result Leighton mentions is a rich, well-balanced whiskey with notes of praline, buttery baked goods, and dried cherries from the earlier tawny port influence, followed by a warming sweetness of toasted caramel and vanilla carried through from the bourbon and an added depth of dried fruits from the sherry. The final maturation period in newly procured tawny port casks elevates the nutty character further and provides a sweet finish for a rich, full-bodied whiskey.
"Redbreast Tawny Port Edition's flavor profile is well within our flock's DNA, yet it provides an exciting twist from another part of the Iberian Peninsula," McCabe adds. "Each subsequent expression in the series will represent a new discovery from this rich region which to date has greatly influenced the Redbreast style over the course of its history."
Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition marks the third release of the brand's acclaimed Iberian Series. The series is inspired by Redbreast's long-standing connection to some of the Iberian Peninsula's most celebrated cooperages and winemakers, and combines the rich heritage and craft of the region with the excellence of Midleton Distillery's single pot still whiskeys, to create expressions that are truly extraordinary. Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition is the second limited edition to join the series, following the 2021 release Redbreast Pedro Ximénez Edition, and permanent expression and series anchor Redbreast Lustau Edition.
Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition is bottled at 46% ABV and will be available in the USA for an SRP of $99.99. Link to purchase.
Tasting Notes:
Aroma: Sweet and warming confectionery notes of buttered pastry accompanied by aromas of caramelized almonds with subtle undertones of praline and dried cherry. Scented floral honey with whisperings of a delicate herbal character lingers in the background while the seasoned oak and pot still spices accentuate the sweet and full-bodied nature of this wonderfully balanced whiskey.
Taste: Rich and nutty at first with notes of chocolate-coated hazelnut and salted caramel, quickly followed with fresh plums and dried fig. The tannins' soft presence works in harmony with the luscious and creamy texture, evoking notes of orange marmalade with delicate hints of toasted oak.
Finish: Lingering finish which sees the pot still spices and fruits slowly fading, leaving the tawny seasoned oak to have the last word.
