Last day! For me at least because I don’t plan to do one tomorrow instead I am shifting focus to the multichapter story. This is quite short and ends sadly but in a canonical way. Story under the read more and more detailed tags on ao3

Revali woke with a bad feeling settling in the pit of his stomach. As he tidied away his hammock and watched the others it was clear the rest of the Champions also felt that something was amiss though for the sake of the Princess no one spoke up about it.

Revali didn't think there was any reason for the dread, the group was on their way to Mount Lanayru for Zelda to pray at yet another spring. Maybe it was a feeling that it wouldn't work and her power wouldn't wake.

It felt deeper than that though. Even Daruk who was usually more than happy to fill their travels with idle prattle talked less than usual. The feeling persisted making the lunch they stopped to have hard to eat.

Afterward, if he and Link lagged just a bit behind the group that was his and Link's business alone even if he had to suffer a knowing look from Urbosa.

Link felt it too, a gnawing sense that something would go wrong today and worried that the Princess would be in danger. Revali assured him that she wouldn't be, not with everyone here to protect her.

Revali worried that Link may be the one in danger and made him promise not to be too reckless. Link only laughed and waved away his concern. That didn't necessarily help ease the knot in Revali's stomach but hearing Link's laugh was always welcome.

When the Princess and Link went up the mountain he turned to the others asking with a silent look if they felt the cloud hanging over them. Mipha nodded and wrung her hands together. What would they do if this didn't work, she asked. Urbosa assured her they'd find something else.

That something else turned out to be Calamity Ganon waking just after the Princess and Link returned from the mountain.

Suddenly the feeling of dread made a lot of sense.

"Promise me, that you'll be careful." Revali gripped Link's shoulders, stealing a few precious moments before he had to fly to Vah Medoh.

"I will, you be careful too," Link signed.

Blue eyes bore into green.

The pit in Revali’s stomach only grew.

"Link, you know that it's you right? It's always been you. You have to promise me that you won't let this be the end of you though." Revali's voice sounded desperate.

He hated the sound in his voice.

"It won't be."

"Promise me… promise me that when this is all over you'll let me braid new feathers into your hair." Revali pleaded, desperate for anything to ensure that Link would come back.

"I promise, but you have to promise me that you'll come back uninjured so you are actually able to," Link's hands shook.

"I promise."

There was a call behind them, they were stealing too much time.

Revali held Link tight, trying to memorize the warm press of the Hylian against him.

"Go do your job." Revali pulled away the feeling still in his stomach.

"I love you." Link's hands were still shaking.

"I love you too."

Neither of the promises are kept.
