Blu-ray Review: Pledge Night
Tumblr media
Pledge Night opens with the sound of a toilet flushing; an apt metaphor for the 86 minutes that follow. Filmed in 1988 but not released until its VHS debut in 1990, the movie marries two cinematic staples of the 1980s: teen sex comedies and slasher movies. Director Paul Ziller's (Back in Action, Bloodfist IV: Die Trying) feature debut hits all the trope of both subgenres but lacks many of the characteristics that make either one appealing.
Set during Hell Week, the film follows a group of hopeful pledges being initiated into Phi Epsilon Nu. As if undergoing hazing, pranks, and humiliation isn't enough, Sid - an acid-burned hippie from Hell who was killed in the same house during a hazing ritual gone wrong two decades prior - inexplicably returns (via the toilet, no less) and begins killing off the fraternity brothers. It culminates in a laughably cheesy ending.
Tumblr media
Pledge Night has the formulaic plot, low production values, wooden performances, cheap special effects, and unlikable, undeveloped characters one might expect from a $200,000-budgeted film that was shot in 12 days in a frat house (on location at New Jersey's Rutgers University). Its biggest hurdle is the pacing. The script is virtually split down the middle between sex comedy and slasher, with writer/producer Joyce Snyder (her lone non-adult film credit) seemingly refused to mix the two.
Despite positioning itself as a horror comedy (just look at that artwork above), no amount of T&A can save the meandering first half from being a painfully dull college film. The over-the-top (albeit accurate, as Snyder proudly points out in the extras) hazing practices may have some inherent humor, but there's nary a laugh throughout. Once the switch is flipped to horror, however, the entertainment value ramps up with a series of ridiculous moments, ranging from a cherry bomb in a victim's underwear to a killer who physically climbs through people's bodies.
Tumblr media
Pledge Night's most notable claim to fame is that Joey Belladonna, vocalist of thrash metal stalwarts Anthrax, plays Sid in a flashback. It's a brief but integral cameo that sets up the killer's backstory, with present-day Sid played by a different actor (Will Kempe) under makeup to make his flesh look melted via acid. Anthrax's music is also used to score the film, which is fun to hear but often sounds out of place. It's supplemented by more traditional underscoring by Todd Rice.
Produced during the MPAA's crackdown on gore, the film had to be submitted five times before receiving its R rating. Unfortunately, several of Dean Kartalas' (an effects assistant on Street Trash) special effects were lost in the process. Erik Schaper (Six Feet Under) handled Sid's acid makeup. Clearly hoping to launch a franchise, the burned killer is out for vengeance like the poor man's Freddy Krueger - particularly from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge - but the rules of the world are never established, so the story carries little weight.

Pledge Night has been newly restored in 2K from its 35mm original camera negative for Vinegar Syndrome's Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. Despite the low budget, the polished picture is so clear that you can see a sizeable strand of spit dangling between two actors' mouths when they kiss. The release features reversible artwork, plus Vinegar Syndrome offers an exclusive, embossed slipcover designed by Earl Kessler Jr., limited to 2,000.
Ziller, in a new interview, discusses how the film came to be and how several of the special effects were accomplished, but since he didn't write the screenplay, he fails to delve into its more peculiar choices. In Snyder's piece, the only discussion of her script involves the research that she put into it. Snyder also narrates over footage of frat houses where various controversies have occurred in a separate featurette.
Tumblr media
Actors typically have less to say than filmmakers in special features, but that's not the case with Arthur Lundquist - who, at 27 minutes, talks longer than Ziller and Snyder combined. He relishes the opportunity to discuss his role as the "bad man" frat guy, including reading an excerpt from his diary detailing the filming of his death scene. Robert Lentini, who played one of the ill-fated pledges, similarly looks back on the production with a smile. The original trailer rounds out the extras.
Pledge Night is available now on Blu-ray/DVD via Vinegar Syndrome.
