Typhoon Paeng
Severe Tropical Storm Paeng (Nalgae), the Philippines’ 16th tropical cyclone for 2022, unleashed torrential rain that triggered floods and landslides in parts of Mindanao, the Visayas, and Luzon. It struck just as the country was heading into a long weekend to mark All Saints’ Day and All Soul's Day.
Paeng’s five landfalls were all in Luzon, but initial reports show Mindanao suffered the most deaths, particularly the newly created province of Maguindanao del Norte.
Following the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. declared a state of calamity for six months in the Calabarzon region (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), the Bicol region, the Western Visayas, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
I've learned all about from this typhoon paeng is the importance of being ready. Many of our fellow citizens lost their lives due to the lack of preparation in the middle of the tragic situation.
To ensure that we are always prepared, it is essential to listen to weather updates and advisories. In addition, we should be aware of the emergency hotlines and stock up on food, rescue equipment, and clothing in case we need to evacuate.
As a student, child, or classmate, my priority is the safety of my families, relatives, or schoolmates, and I will remind you that it is always important to be prepared because we cannot predict when disasters will enter our community.

Manila (Times Of Ocean)- The death toll from Cyclone Agathon in the Philippines has climbed to 43, and seven people remain missing, the government said Wednesday.
Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council told the daily Phil Star that most of the deaths occurred in the Visayas and Davao regions as a result of the tropical depression known internationally as Megi.
Rain, floods, and landslides were caused by the cyclone, which affected people who were evacuated to safer places, and damaged infrastructure on a large scale.
At least eight people were injured during the cyclone.
A total of 16,800 metric tons of agricultural products have also been affected.
Earlier in the day, the cyclone’s bad weather caused flooding in many parts of the country, including in the Bicol and autonomous Bangsamoro regions of Muslim Mindanao.
Police and rescue teams have been deployed to flood-hit areas.
The floods affected more than 95,700 families, displacing thousands of people.

Abaca fiber is the primary material in making the traditional textiles of the Tbolis (Tnalak) and the Blaans (Tabih). Domestic production of abaca continues to grow in the country. According to the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (FIDA), the Bicol region remained the country’s top producer with 38 percent of total output or 17.6 million kilos (2016 data). Growth in volume were most pronounced in the regions of Western Visayas and SOCSKSARGEN but decreases were also seen in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and CARAGA. South Cotabato steadily accounted for 75 percent of the region’s production in recent years. Most of the farms in South Cotabato are located in the municipalities of Lake Sebu and Tboli. While Sarangani is the second ranking abaca producing province in Region 12. PH to donate expiring Covid-19 jabs to countries with low supply
PH to donate expiring Covid-19 jabs to countries with low supply
MANILA – The government will donate Covid-19 vaccines nearing expiry to countries with low vaccination coverage, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said Thursday.
In a televised public briefing, Duque said they are considering to donate the life-saving vaccines to Cambodia, Myanmar, and other countries in Africa.
“Maganda naman iyang layunin na iyan para makatulong din tayo sa mga kapatid natin mula sa mga ibang bansa na namamayagpag pa rin ang Covid-19 pero ang supply ng bakuna ay kulang na kulang (That’s a good cause so we can help people in countries where Covid-19 cases are high and lack vaccine supply),” he added.
However, the National Vaccination Operation Center is still identifying the amount and which doses to donate.
Duque confirmed that pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca approved the shelf life extension of its Covid-19 jabs.
“Pero ang FDA [Food and Drug Administration] na lamang ang inaantay natin para maaprubahan iyong extension ng (We’re just waiting for the FDA to approve the extension of) shelf life by three months,” he said.
The Philippines has vaccinated over 70 percent of its target population against the coronavirus. To increase these numbers, the national government holds the fourth national vaccination drive from March 10 to 12 with the target to inoculate 1.8 million persons.
Its coverage is focused on the A2 population or the senior citizens and areas with low vaccination rate -- Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Central Visayas, Soccsksargen, and Bicol Region. (PNA)
