9 Interesting Social Activities For Aging Adults Who Live Alone
The elderly who live alone or independently often experience social isolation and boredom due to their weak condition of limbs. It is paramount for seniors to go outdoors to enjoy and maintain an active life both physically and socially. As long as they lead a healthy life, they must not stick to their house all day long and watch talk shows or read a book. Being physically and socially active is proven for seniors to avert isolation and depression. This rule doesn't only apply to healthy seniors, but those who face health challenges can get assistance from home care Dallas for transportation services. Here are some engaging social activities for seniors living alone and isolated.
Tumblr media
1. Volunteer Programs
Volunteer programs often require a minimum obligation and usually look for some extra people to offer assistance. Volunteer programs give a chance for some light and physical activity and a thoughtful approach for seniors to unite with the community. Seniors can select a program within their area or any area of interest or even choose an organization that needs immediate volunteers. For example, professional retirees usually volunteer for retired executive service corporations to guide new business owners. Elderly can look forward to habitat for humanity, hospitals, hospice care facility, women's shelter and local soup kitchens for volunteering.
2. Computer Classes
Changing the technological landscape often becomes challenging for seniors to keep up with. However, learning about basic email navigation and social networks may impact their lives positively. These essential skills certainly help many seniors to stay in touch with family and friends and offer an excellent opportunity to reconnect with old friends.
3. Senior Fitness Programs
Many senior fitness communities hold exercise classes for seniors to stay active. Their fitness level determines the class type that will be best for them and includes workouts like yoga, Tai Chi, water aerobics and therapeutic stretching.
4. Crafting
Crafting is considered a great physical and social activity for seniors that keeps their hands and minds busy. Many community centres hold classes for seniors to learn basic crafting skills like crocheting, knitting, jewellery making and many others that seniors enjoy. This is an amazing opportunity for seniors to socialize and learn new skills or even take their old skills to an advanced level. They can even make money by selling their handmade goods or donating them to the needy.
5. Getting Outdoors
Outdoor activities offer a sense of relaxation to seniors and an opportunity to socialize. Seniors can walk with their or their neighbour's pet, talk with new people and make friends. They can also take pictures for their adventure journal.
6. Attend Community Events
Attending community events such as festivals, concerts, and fairs can be a fun way to get out of the house and meet new people. Many communities offer events throughout the year that are open to the public. Attending these events can be a great way to connect with others and learn about local culture and traditions.
7. Explore Local History
Many seniors have a deep interest in local history, and exploring this history can be a great way to learn more about the community and meet new people. Whether it's visiting local museums or attending historical society events, exploring local history can be a fun and engaging way to stay socially active.
8. Participate in Online Communities
While face-to-face interaction is essential, online communities can also provide valuable opportunities for social interaction. There are many online forums and social media groups that cater to seniors, and these can be great places to connect with others who share similar interests and experiences
9. Host a Social Gathering
Finally, hosting a social gathering can be a great way to bring people together and foster social connections. Whether it's a potluck dinner, a game night, or a movie screening, hosting a social gathering can provide opportunities for seniors to connect with others in a comfortable and familiar setting.
Conclusion
These are some of the fantastic social activities that seniors can enjoy and get a chance to stay active as well. Families can also consider consulting Dallas home care providers as another effective way to help their loved one socialize and remain physically active. The caregivers will offer companionship and transportation services to take them to social communities and musical events, encouraging them to enjoy a high quality of life in their golden years.

On Standards of Feminist Conduct
Violence against women is a permanent feature of all capitalist societies, including US capitalist society. It is one of the most abhorrent aspects of patriarchy, the evil institution of women’s oppression. Patriarchy in the US has its own specific characteristics that are particular to capitalism, such as the widespread commodification of women. The term “commodification” refers to the transformation of women by the capitalists into objects for sale, a process in which ordinary men also participate.
Violence against women also shows up within self-proclaimed revolutionary organizations and revolutionary movements in the US. This includes rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment, unwanted sexual pressure, other forms of physical and verbal abuse, and other forms of violation of consent. Recently, two major Trotskyist organizations, one in Britain [1] and one in the US [2], were rightly subjected to public exposure and condemnation for the liberalism (meaning the unprincipled lack of struggle) of their members in failing to oppose rape culture.
Another communist organization in the US was also exposed less than a year ago for sheltering a rapist member, disciplining him by merely having him write an essay for “self-criticism.” [3] At the height of the Occupy movement, there were accounts of sexual assault at protest camps in New York, Cleveland, Dallas, Baltimore, Lawrence, Portland, New Hampshire, and Glasgow. [4] It is also well known that rape culture is widespread among anarchist collectives and the broader anarchist milieu. [5] For every revolutionary organization and trend, the same question of women’s emancipation is on the table: which side are you on?
This is one of the most important political questions that must be resolved today for the revolutionary movement to move forward. In certain specific circumstances, it is the single most important political question. The fact that there is increasing debate on this question and growing disorder within the ranks of organizations is a good thing that must be encouraged to develop further. There needs to be more of it: more debate, more disorder, more turmoil, and more people raising their voices. Some have pointed out the causal link between the British Trotskyists’ class reductionist line and male chauvinist practice.
Others have highlighted the weak organizational forms of anarchists and their employment of “accountability processes” guided by “restorative justice” frameworks that very often turn out to be shams for the women involved. [6] However, this is too simple of an understanding of the problem if left at this level. In reality, violence against women within revolutionary organizations and revolutionary movements is a phenomenon with a wide expanse. It is not narrowly rooted in any specific trend.
No ideology or -ism will make an organization immune from this problem. There will be groups and individuals claiming all sorts of political positions who at the same time always relegate women’s emancipation to a secondary and unimportant place, or combine feminist discourse with male chauvinist conduct. Therefore, the most important question here is how an organization addresses the problem of violence against women when it arises in practice, as chances are it will at some point within its ranks. Certain guiding principles can be derived from the positive aspects of the Leninist-Comintern historical experience and from the comprehensive whole of today’s ideology of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism.
Maoism must be emphasized here, because of its breakthroughs in developing the trend of proletarian feminism and on the organizational question. Proletarian feminism is a trend of women’s emancipation generated in practice out of the Maoist-led People’s Wars and revolutionary mass movements around the world. [7] The Maoist party concept is also something fundamentally new in its nature and methods of work. [8] The guiding principles outlined here should determine the formulation of organizational policies in the US on anti-women violence. Without the correct policies based on the correct principles, revolutionary organizations in the US will never be able to organize increasing numbers of women as militants and leaders, as they have so far failed to do in the way that history demands of us.The domination of the NGO opportunists and their petty-bourgeois identity politics will remain uncontested. The masses of proletarian women will be left to follow the leadership of different non-proletarian trends, without the weapon of independent class politics.
1. Revolutionary organizations, if they are genuine, must automatically expel any member who engages in anti-women violence and abuse. Organizations that fail to do this cannot be taken seriously and must be publicly exposed for their liberalism in failing to oppose male chauvinism. The “restorative justice” framework and the “accountability process” used by anarchists and other activists more often than not merely reproduce in practice the dynamics of patriarchy.
For Marxist-Leninists, “rectification” and “criticism / self-criticism,” without a policy of expulsion, often becomes the same liberal process with a different name. In contrast, zero tolerance for male chauvinist violence and abuse must be the principle, meaning automatic expulsion and, depending on the circumstances, public exposure. This is the only way to forge organizations that are developing the actuality of women’s emancipation, not just talking about it as an appealing idea.
2. During investigations by an organization in the US into incidents of anti-women violence and abuse, the word of the victim alleging that violence and abuse has been committed against them must be given more weight than the word of the accused. If there is a factual dispute, the guiding principle must be to adopt policies and enact decisions based principally on the victim’s account of events. Victims of domestic violence often have their reality denied or manipulated consistently by their abusers.
This must be taken into account when investigating the facts and when coming to a decision about the accused. The revolutionary organization in the US, which is not a court of justice with a court’s material powers of investigation and presumptions, cannot allow the accused to simply deny the victim’s account in part or wholesale, call into question the victim’s motives, and mobilize their social network to pressure the victim and the organization.
Revolutionary organizations in the US are not states making decisions on punishment and rehabilitation, which would operate according to different standards. They are voluntary associations that must make a call – generally based on limited and conflicting verbal or written accounts – on how to respond to an incident, taking into consideration the need to advance the struggle for women’s emancipation, to develop women as militants and leaders, and to protect the organization’s work and reputation.
3. Rectification of individuals who have engaged in anti-women violence must be encouraged, but can take place only after their expulsion from the ranks of an organization, as a condition of re-admission at a future time. Certain acts, such as rape or sexual assault, must result in a lifetime ban without question. For organizations struggling in the imperialist countries, the Communist Party USA’s expulsion, subsequent mass public trial in 1931, and eventual rectification of Yokinen, a Finnish CPUSA member who denied several African Americans entry to a dance at the Finnish Workers Club in Harlem, remains the best example in the US of what a successful rectification process looks like in practice, in this case for white chauvinist conduct. [9]
Rectification in this regard does not mean uttering some words in an organizational meeting, writing an apology essay, engaging in mediation, participating in accountability circles or victim impact panels, or getting counseling and treatment. Are white chauvinists supposed to be counseled and treated as well? Rectification means conducting self-criticism widely before the masses, submitting the fullest account of one’s conduct and history to public scrutiny, and following through on a course of political activity of struggle against women’s oppression, which must include ongoing transformation of the individual person, similar to what Yokinen successfully carried out under the leadership of the CPUSA.
Recognizing that there is no organization in the US today with the necessary base, prestige among the masses, and scale to conduct such a process means that in the current objective and subjective conditions, successful rectification of individuals for male chauvinism should generally be pursued, but will inevitably continue to be the exception rather than the rule. The most important thing is to struggle against the small-group dynamics that are a soil for male chauvinism and prevent the organization of women. Violence against women will not end without the organization of women.
4. The ideological and political line of a revolutionary organization might be outlined in its documents, but ultimately becomes a material force among the masses only through the conduct and actions of its members. This is one of the new contributions of the Maoist party concept, which emphasizes the importance of revolutionary attitudes among the cadres. Revolutionary organizations must instill in members the need to practice the constant remolding of their thinking and actions to create the actuality of women’s emancipation.
5. Putting the proletarian feminist line in command requires a continuous engagement in criticism and self-criticism, or CSC. CSC in this particular instance involves studying the concept and history of patriarchy, discussing its manifestations in thinking, conduct, and actions through facilitated group settings, and coming to collective decisions on how to fight it. At the same time, CSC that takes place without an existing policy of expulsion for male chauvinist violence and abuse ends up being a toothless ritual that paralyzes rather than strengthens organization. The party building movement of the last phase, the 1960s and the 1970s, largely failed the masses of toiling women in this country.
Those who imagine that a communist organization with proletarian feminist politics at its core can be built or that a revolutionary proletarian feminist movement can be developed today from the ground up – without first confronting the pressing issue of male chauvinism in the existing organizations and circles, including determining the proper guiding principles and policies to do this – are thoroughly deluding themselves. This view amounts to the liquidation of the struggle for women’s emancipation and a kind of economism that refuses to address the real political question at hand of the involvement of women in organizations. We welcome dialogue with feminist-oriented collectives and individuals who are working on this issue in practice and interested in mutual learning through the discussion of organizational principles and policies. (“[T]internal workings of the accountability process itself have the potential to be hijacked and used against a survivor. … In some cases [perpetrators] are allowed to make demands of the survivor or else place criteria on their own participation. Perpetrators, or their apologists, all too commonly respond to being called out by making defensive ‘callouts’ of their own. As discussed earlier, they will accuse the survivor of any wrongdoing they can think of, or else make some up when actual misdeeds are not forthcoming. Rather than recognize these pathetic attempts at slander as the manipulative transgressions they are, the false supporters usually join the perpetrator in absurd calls for ‘accountability’ from the survivor. From this newfound position of righteousness, and with the complicity of the false supporters, the perpetrator is free to alter the very character of the accountability process.
What began as a callout becomes more like a negotiation, as a perpetrator’s cooperation becomes contingent on the survivor addressing their concerns. Perhaps some of these concerns might even be valid, but of course what’s important is not their validity but their role in undermining the survivor’s struggle. The survivor must now earn not only the accountability they get from the perpetrator, but also the support they get from the community. Those survivors who are unwilling or unable to jump through all the hoops will be written off. In a final perversion of the accountability process, the survivor will be the one blamed for its failure, the one who was unwilling to ‘work things out’. By this point the so-called ‘Restorative Justice’ framework has been so distorted that it succeeds only in ‘restoring’ the power dynamics of a Rape Culture which had been otherwise compromised by the survivors’ struggle.”).

In the third decade of the 21st century, the Social Register still exists, there are still debutante balls, polo and lacrosse are still patrician sports, and old money families still summer at Newport. But these are fossil relics of an older class system. The rising ruling class in America is found in every major city in every region. Membership in it depends on having the right diplomas—and the right beliefs.
To observers of the American class system in the 21st century, the common conflation of social class with income is a source of amusement as well as frustration. Depending on how you slice and dice the population, you can come up with as many income classes as you like—four classes with 25%, or the 99% against the 1%, or the 99.99% against the 0.01%. In the United States, as in most advanced societies, class tends to be a compound of income, wealth, education, ethnicity, religion, and race, in various proportions. There has never been a society in which the ruling class consisted merely of a basket of random rich people.
Progressives who equate class with money naturally fall into the mistake of thinking you can reduce class differences by sending lower-income people cash—in the form of a universal basic income, for example. Meanwhile, populists on the right tend to imagine that the United States was much more egalitarian, within the white majority itself, than it really was, whether in the 1950s or the 1850s.
Both sides miss the real story of the evolution of the American class system in the last half century toward the consolidation of a national ruling class—a development which is unprecedented in U.S. history. That’s because, from the American Revolution until the late 20th century, the American elite was divided among regional oligarchies. It is only in the last generation that these regional patriciates have been absorbed into a single, increasingly homogeneous national oligarchy, with the same accent, manners, values, and educational backgrounds from Boston to Austin and San Francisco to New York and Atlanta. This is a truly epochal development.
In living memory, every major city in the United States had its own old money families with their own clubs and their own rituals and their own social and economic networks. Often the money was not very old, going back to a real estate killing or a mining fortune or an oil strike a generation or two before. Even so, the heirs and heiresses set themselves up as a local aristocracy. Like other aristocracies, these urban patricians renewed their bloodlines and bank accounts by admitting new money, once the parvenus had served probation and assimilated the values of the local patriciate.
In short, for two centuries there was a double competition among regional American oligarchies. On the one hand, the local notables, particularly those from the newly settled regions, had to prove they were not backward bumpkins, but were just as up-to-date with regard to European fashions as the patricians in New York and Boston and Philadelphia. On the other hand, some of them dreamed that the city they ran, whether it was Atlanta or Milwaukee, would become the Athens or Renaissance Florence of North America, and favored local writers, poets, and artists, as long as their work was in fashionable styles and did not inspire seditious thoughts among the local masses. The subnational blocs of New Englanders, Southerners, and Midwesterners fought to control the federal government in order to promote their regional economic interests.
The status of Harvard and Yale as prestigious national rather than regional universities is relatively recent. A few generations ago, it was assumed that the sons of the local gentry (this was before coeducation began in the 1960s and 1970s) would remain in the area and rise to high office in local and state business, politics, and philanthropy—goals that were best served if they attended a local elite college and joined the right fraternity, rather than being educated in some other part of the country. College was about upper-class socialization, not learning, which is why parochial patricians favored regional colleges and universities. If your family was in the local social register, that was much more important than whether you went to an Ivy League college or a local college or no college at all.
American patricians of earlier generations would have been surprised that rich people, many of them celebrities, would scheme and bribe university officers to get their children into a few top universities. Scheming to get into the right local “society” club—now that would have made sense.
Upper-class women were the chief enforcers of local “society.” Anybody who thinks that women are somehow naturally more generous and egalitarian than men has never encountered a doyenne of high society. Mrs. Astor’s 400 families in New York had their counterparts throughout the United States, from the Mainline elite in Philadelphia to the Highland Park set in Dallas.
The egalitarianism of the American frontier is greatly exaggerated. Some of the myth comes from European tourists like Alexis de Tocqueville, Harriet Martineau, and Dickens. For ideological reasons or just for entertainment, they played up how classless and vulgar Americans were for audiences back in Europe. On their trips they mostly encountered the wealthy and educated, who might have been informal by the standards of British dukes or French royalty, but who were hardly yeoman farmers. If these famous tourists had spent their time in slave cabins, immigrant tenements, miners camps, and cowboy bunkhouses, they might have gotten a different sense of how egalitarian America actually was. Elite Americans might have been more likely than elite Brits to smile politely when dealing with working-class people, but they were no more likely to welcome them into the family.
White poverty in the United States today is concentrated in greater Appalachia, because the Scots Irish settlers, often illiterate squatters, were priced out of other areas and ended up in the hills of Appalachia, the Ozarks, and the Texas Hill Country. As soon as the affluent discover the scenic views in those areas, they will be forced to move once more, just as old-stock families are already being priced out of the Texas Hill Country by rich refugees from California, bringing with them their cultural heritage of trophy wineries and boutiques, New Age spirituality and organic cuisines.
In short, a historical narrative which describes a fall from the yeoman democracy of an imagined American past to the plutocracy and technocracy of today is fundamentally wrong. While American society was not formally aristocratic it was hierarchical and class-ridden from the beginning—not to mention racist and ethnically biased. What’s new today is that these highly exclusive local urban patriciates are in the process of being absorbed into the first truly national ruling class in American history—which is a good thing in some ways, and a bad thing in others.
Compared with previous American elites, the emerging American oligarchy is open and meritocratic and free of most glaring forms of racial and ethnic bias. As recently as the 1970s, an acquaintance of mine who worked for a major Northeastern bank had to disguise the fact of his Irish ancestry from the bank’s WASP partners. No longer. Elite banks and businesses are desperate to prove their commitment to diversity. At the moment Wall Street and Silicon Valley are disproportionately white and Asian American, but this reflects the relatively low socioeconomic status of many Black and Hispanic Americans, a status shared by the Scots Irish white poor in greater Appalachia (who are left out of “diversity and inclusion” efforts because of their “white privilege”). Immigrants from Africa and South America (as opposed to Mexico and Central America) tend to be from professional class backgrounds and to be better educated and more affluent than white Americans on average—which explains why Harvard uses rich African immigrants to meet its informal Black quota, although the purpose of affirmative action was supposed to be to help the American descendants of slaves (ADOS). According to Pew, the richest groups in the United States by religion are Episcopalian, Jewish, and Hindu (wealthy “seculars” may be disproportionately East Asian American, though the data on this point is not clear).
Membership in the multiracial, post-ethnic national overclass depends chiefly on graduation with a diploma—preferably a graduate or professional degree—from an Ivy League school or a selective state university, which makes the Ivy League the new social register. But a diploma from the Ivy League or a top-ranked state university by itself is not sufficient for admission to the new national overclass. Like all ruling classes, the new American overclass uses cues like dialect, religion, and values to distinguish insiders from outsiders.
Dialect. You may have been at the top of your class in Harvard business school, but if you pronounce thirty-third “toidy-toid” or have a Southern drawl, you might consider speech therapy.
Religion. You may have edited the Yale Law Review, but if you tell interviewers that you recently accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior, or fondle a rosary during the interview, don’t expect a job at a prestige firm.
Values. This is the trickiest test, because the ruling class is constantly changing its shibboleths—in order to distinguish true members of the inner circle from vulgar impostors who are trying to break into the elite. A decade ago, as a member of the American overclass you could get away with saying, along with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, “I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, but I strongly support civil unions for gay men and lesbians.” In 2020 you are expected to say, “I strongly support trans rights.” You will flunk the interview if you start going on about civil unions.
More and more Americans are figuring out that “wokeness” functions in the new, centralized American elite as a device to exclude working-class Americans of all races, along with backward remnants of the old regional elites. In effect, the new national oligarchy changes the codes and the passwords every six months or so, and notifies its members through the universities and the prestige media and Twitter. America’s working-class majority of all races pays far less attention than the elite to the media, and is highly unlikely to have a kid at Harvard or Yale to clue them in. And non-college-educated Americans spend very little time on Facebook and Twitter, the latter of which they are unlikely to be able to identify—which, among other things, proves the idiocy of the “Russiagate” theory that Vladimir Putin brainwashed white working-class Americans into voting for Trump by memes in social media which they are the least likely American voters to see.
Constantly replacing old terms with new terms known only to the oligarchs is a brilliant strategy of social exclusion. The rationale is supposed to be that this shows greater respect for particular groups. But there was no grassroots working-class movement among Black Americans demanding the use of “enslaved persons” instead of “slaves” and the overwhelming majority of Americans of Latin American descent—a wildly homogenizing category created by the U.S. Census Bureau—reject the weird term “Latinx.” Woke speech is simply a ruling-class dialect, which must be updated frequently to keep the lower orders from breaking the code and successfully imitating their betters.
Mrs. Astor would approve.

A classic and a must-read; I’ve put a few selections in the body of this post, but I strongly recommend reading the entire thing as linked.
"I've had several cases over the years in which the anti-abortion patient had rationalized in one way or another that her case was the only exception, but the one that really made an impression was the college senior who was the president of her campus Right-to-Life organization, meaning that she had worked very hard in that organization for several years. As I was completing her procedure, I asked what she planned to do about her high office in the RTL organization. Her response was a wide-eyed, 'You're not going to tell them, are you!?' When assured that I was not, she breathed a sigh of relief, explaining how important that position was to her and how she wouldn't want this to interfere with it." (Physician, Texas)
"In 1990, in the Boston area, Operation Rescue and other groups were regularly blockading the clinics, and many of us went every Saturday morning for months to help women and staff get in. As a result, we knew many of the 'antis' by face. One morning, a woman who had been a regular 'sidewalk counselor' went into the clinic with a young woman who looked like she was 16-17, and obviously her daughter. When the mother came out about an hour later, I had to go up and ask her if her daughter's situation had caused her to change her mind. 'I don't expect you to understand my daughter's situation!' she angrily replied. The following Saturday, she was back, pleading with women entering the clinic not to 'murder their babies.'" (Clinic escort, Massachusetts)
"We too have seen our share of anti-choice women, ones the counselors usually grit their teeth over. Just last week a woman announced loudly enough for all to hear in the recovery room, that she thought abortion should be illegal. Amazingly, this was her second abortion within the last few months, having gotten pregnant again within a month of the first abortion. The nurse handled it by talking about all the carnage that went on before abortion was legalized and how fortunate she was to be receiving safe, professional care. However, this young woman continued to insist it was wrong and should be made illegal. Finally the nurse said, 'Well, I guess we won't be seeing you here again, not that you're not welcome.' Later on, another patient who had overheard this exchange thanked the nurse for her remarks." (Clinic Administrator, Alberta)
"We saw a woman recently who after four attempts and many hours of counseling both at the hospital and our clinic, finally, calmly and uneventfully, had her abortion. Four months later, she called me on Christmas Eve to tell me that she was not and never was pro-choice and that we failed to recognize that she was clinically depressed at the time of her abortion. The purpose of her call was to chastise me for not sending her off to the psych unit instead of the procedure room." (Clinic Administrator, Alberta)
"Recently, we had a patient who had given a history of being a 'pro-life' activist, but who had decided to have an abortion. She was pleasant to me and our initial discussion was mutually respectful. Later, she told someone on my staff that she thought abortion is murder, that she is a murderer, and that she is murdering her baby. So before doing her procedure, I asked her if she thought abortion is murder -- the answer was yes. I asked her if she thought I am a murderer, and if she thought I would be murdering her baby, and she said yes. But murder is a crime, and murderers are executed. Is this a crime? Well, it should be, she said. At that point, she became angry and hostile, and the summary of the conversation was that she regarded me as an abortion-dispensing machine, and how dare I ask her what she thinks. After explaining to her that I do not perform abortions for people who think I am a murderer or people who are angry at me, I declined to provide her with medical care. I do not know whether she found someone else to do her abortion." (Physician, Colorado)
"In 1973, after Roe v. Wade, abortion became legal but had to be performed in a hospital. That of course was changed later. For the first 'legal abortion day' I had scheduled five procedures. While scrubbing between cases, I was accosted by the Chief of the OB/Gyn service. He asked me, 'How many children are you going to kill today?' My response, out of anger, was a familiar vulgar retort. About three months later, this born-again Christian called me to explain that he was against abortion but his daughter was only a junior in high school and was too young to have a baby and he was also afraid that if she did have a baby she would not want to put it up for adoption. I told him he did not need to explain the situation to me. 'All I need to know', I said, 'is that SHE wants an abortion.' Two years later I performed a second abortion on her during her college break. She thanked me and pleaded, 'Please don't tell my dad, he is still anti-abortion.'" (Physician, Washington State)
"I once had a German client who greatly thanked me at the door, leaving after a difficult 22-week abortion. With a gleaming smile, she added: 'Und doch sind Sie ein Mörderer.' ('And you're still a murderer.')" (Physician, The Netherlands)
"My first encounter with this phenomenon came when I was doing a 2-week follow-up at a family planning clinic. The woman's anti-choice values spoke indirectly through her expression and body language. She told me that she had been offended by the other women in the abortion clinic waiting room because they were using abortion as a form of birth control, but her condom had broken so she had no choice! I had real difficulty not pointing out that she did have a choice, and she had made it! Just like the other women in the waiting room." (Physician, Ontario)
"I had a 37 year old woman just yesterday who was 13 weeks. She said she and her husband had been discussing this pregnancy for 2-3 months. She was strongly opposed to abortion, 'but my husband is forcing me to do it.' Naturally, I told her that no one could force her into an abortion, and that she had to choose whether the pregnancy or her husband were more important. I told her I only wanted what was best for her, and I would not do the abortion unless she agreed that it was in her best interest. Once she was faced with actually having to voice her own choice, she said 'Well, I made the appointment and I came here, so go ahead and do it. It's what's best.' At last I think she came to grips with the fact that it really was her decision after all." (Physician, Nevada)
The medical director at a Dallas abortion clinic told this story: A white woman from an affluent north Dallas neighborhood brought her black maid in for an abortion and paid for it. While the maid was in a counseling session, a commotion was heard in the waiting room outside. The maid's employer was handing out anti-abortion leaflets to other women waiting for abortions.
From a clinic director in a mid-western state: "One of the most remarkable cases was a woman who came [from another part of the state] and said she was the Right-to-Life president in her county. 'But,' she said, she 'had become pregnant and had to have an abortion.'"
Many anti-choice women are convinced that their need for abortion is unique -- not like those "other" women -- even though they have abortions for the same sorts of reasons. Anti-choice women often expect special treatment from clinic staff. Some demand an abortion immediately, wanting to skip important preliminaries such as taking a history or waiting for blood test results. Frequently, anti-abortion women will refuse counseling (such women are generally turned away or referred to an outside counselor because counseling at clinics is mandatory). Some women insist on sneaking in the back door and hiding in a room away from other patients. Others refuse to sit in the waiting room with women they call "sluts" and "trash." Or if they do, they get angry when other patients in the waiting room talk or laugh, because it proves to them that women get abortions casually, for "convenience".

Name: Wren Bennett Gender:  Agender & they/them Date of birth: January 11th, 1982 (37) Sexuality: Pansexual Occupation:  Family Court Judge Hometown: Dallas, Texas Neighborhood: Devonshire Time in Dallas: their whole life Faceclaim: Aasia Kate Dillon
Biography
wren grew up in what is now known as the design district when it wasn’t as hip and trendy as it is now. many of the places they grew up with are gone now. they lived with their parents and younger brother, eric. both their parents had a decent income, but had to work long hours to provide more than the basics - they were neither poor nor rich. their parents were at work a lot and so, they and their little brother were often looked after by their grandparents. their grandmother loved any type of court show and so, that was what was on the television, making wren fall in love with the idea of being a judge as well. they were eight when they decided that out of all the jobs in the world, that is what they wanted to do.
they knew good grades were important to get into law school and thus, they spent most of their time studying and obsessively reading the law in middle school, and in high school, they added a habit of reading papers and essays on the law and its proper interpretation. they were dedicated to their dream, but it was also an escape. they never fit it. for as long as they can remember they were the odd one out. they were too feminine to hang with the boys and too masculine to connect with girls, which left them isolated in the gendered world that was her middle- and high school. it was also something that kept them from having to deal with their own gender and sexuality and when they were studying, that all just didn’t matter. the only friendships they had were on the debate team but even those stayed pretty shallow and were only formed because they were both in the same club. they always had a hard time opening up to others. they weren’t used to making or having friends, as their parents were too busy to organize sleepovers, or to even bring them to sleepovers. they didn’t like to have children over and always said no, which made wren not even ask and this, they weren’t asked in return. that meant that they were used to being on their own and if they really needed entertainment, they spent time with their brother. the long term consequence of that lack of experience with other children was that they were, and still are, very focussed on themself.
they did go to junior and senior prom, but both of those were close to disasters, or at least junior prom really was. their junior prom, they attended in a dress which in and of itself should tell you it went awfully. they felt uncomfortable the whole evening and their date was embarrassed that their date was clumsy, unelegant and quite moody, really. they went home and vowed to never go to such a silly thing again. their senior prom went better in terms of dress and date. they had convinced their mother that it was ‘in’ to wear some sort of suit now, which their mother didn’t quite believe but after wren’s continued arguing, she gave in. they also went with a girl, secretly - as their mother wasn’t too bothered about prom pictures at home. only, they didn’t really go, considering they weren’t let in. their school told them to arrive with boys, or leave. so, they did what any smart person would do and asked around for the only gay male couple they knew of, who had apparently decided not to attend as they had foreseen trouble. an hour late, they did arrive together and each paired up as seemingly heterosexual couples but finally, they did have their dance on the dancefloor with their dates - which was promptly stopped by school administrators and they were thrown out anyway. it is still one of their fondest memories though. it was the first time they had actively chosen to break rules and that did feel good.
after graduation, they got into law school in austin, texas on a scholarship and they always say their life really began there. no one knew them there and it was a place filled with people who found the law as fascinating as they did. on top of that, here it seemed so different than dallas. people in austin didn’t seem to care about people’s gender and sexuality as much and so, over the course of their education, they experimented. they slept with people of all genders and gender expressions and they learned that their attraction lied more with who the people were than with their genitals or even their looks - though women were the ones they had the strongest bond with. they also learned that they were not a woman as they had always been told they were, but they weren’t a man either as they just didn’t feel that connected to that gender and all that meant. they had finally joined an LGBT group after two years of studying and learned about non-binary genders, which led them to adopting the term agender and insisting on they/them pronouns which at that time, weren’t even nearly as accepted as they are now.
over the next years at university, they developed their signature look. they learned that they quite liked suits and that they really made them feel powerful and attractive, much more than any other style of dress did. they experimented with a lot of different hairstyles but finally settled on a very short buzzcut which made them look quite terrifying in a courtroom, but it played in their favor. they looked and sounded no-nonsense and their professors enjoyed that about them. they opted to focus on family law as they found that the most interesting branch and always had, especially the history of it.
they spent the next years out of college working as an attorney. they also did their best to network, to rub shoulders with political figures back in dallas after they moved back. they wanted to become a judge and preferably before they turned forty, so political connections and alliances were necessary. becoming a judge had always been the goal and it was their dream, but it would take quite a few years to achieve it.
in those years, they perfected their iconic look a bit further, adding a walking stick. they were building their armor and a persona people would recognize and vote for to become a judge. they made sure that it was known that they had progressive views on what a family should look like and their belief in the rehabilitation of juvenile offenders but in most other matters they expressed a quit firm view that would speak more to right wing orientated people. they made it known that they didn’t want to tolerate drug users and abusers getting multiple chances before finally terminating their parental rights, for example. they tried to lock in the progressive and democratic vote, but not alienate conservative and republican voters either, which in the end seems to have worked.
in their personal life, things were less focussed and they have always been what they struggled with. they have never had a relationship that has lasted longer than seven months and their partners were never very happy. wren has always worked a lot; very focussed on their career, their dreams, their needs and their relationships have always come second to that; everything else had to move aside for their dreams… which a lot of people didn’t want to do, so - they found their time that wasn’t taken up by their job, filled with reading, listening to music, playing the piano - which they had always wanted to learn - and redecorating their home, now in devonshire. that private life was dotted by hookups and small relationships but that was it.
now, their life is a little different. last year, they finally made it to where they wanted to be - family court judge - and they were incredibly happy. they even teared up and full on cried in the privacy of their home. their grandmother was ecstatic and their parents, for as much as they didn’t understand their child’s identity and choices, were also very pleased. it was their moment of glory and finally, they felt like they had achieved what they had worked for and finally, they felt like they had succeeded over everyone who had ever told them that they’d never succeed in becoming judge in the conservative state of texas, that they’d never amount to anything because they looked odd, because they weren’t interesting, because they weren’t who they were supposed to be. it was amazing.
… and then, there was seemingly nothing. they finally had reached their goal which their life had orbited around for so long and while they had smaller goals in what they wanted to accomplish, how they wanted to rule and what effect they wanted to have, those goals weren’t as big as the goal they had once set for herself and didn’t provide the conditions that normally had them thriving. wren loved the pressure of a big dream. there was pressure and stress now, as a judge, but they felt like they could really handle it… so, they went on a path of discovering what their next goal was and decided it had to be in their personal life. they would finally have time for one, now that they weren’t spending most free time trying to plan to get elected.
their current goals are surprisingly romantic, they have come to conclude. when they made countless lists of what they were missing in their downtime. they missed coming home to someone. they missed cuddling up to someone and telling someone about their day. they also missed hearing about someone’s day. they had noticed they looked with a bit of envy at some of the couples they saw in the street and noticed that they too now finally felt that longing for a family. one child, that would be enough, they thought. a partner and a child. that is their goal, but how realistic is it when they still do live for their job? they start at seven in the morning and end their day at seven in the evening. they aren’t sure how much time they’re willing to shave off that because they want to do their job well. they worked so hard to get here and now they have to do a good job. they want to find that balance between a professional and personal life… but they aren’t good at it. they aren’t good at being themself in casual surroundings. the courts, as well as networking,  has rules and codes of conduct. interactions between friends, flirting and dating have less of those, or they are too ambiguous for wren to really grasp, so they really aren’t sure if they will be any good at any of this, but they do know that they want to try and figure it out. they want a few friends, finally and they want that homelife that they crave at almost forty… but they are terrified that they just won’t succeed, for the first time in their life.
Personality
they are very goal-orientated. they can’t seem to work in any other way. they need goals, with smaller goals set that lead up to the ultimate prize, the ultimate goal. they are good at it too; at achieving. it’s what they want to do, it’s how they feel they exist and how they feel they are doing something.
they can be moody. they are not a happy-go-lucky person. they are always occupied with something, and so a lot of things people talk about are just not interesting or relevant to them. they are also a nightmare to deal with in the morning. they just aren’t very happy most of the time. coffee does help, though.
they are organized. color-coordination, folders, and binders are what reign wren’s office. there is no paper out of place, and when there is - wren is not happy. it is the same in their home. everything has it’s spot and they have a planner on when what gets cleaned. twice a year, they come around to washing out all the kitchen cabinets, cleaning all the furniture and honestly, their home is as close to pristine as it can get. they do have a cleaner for the weekly casual clean but that’s only so they have time for the rota of deep cleaning moments.
they are inflexible. they have a schedule for everything, they have a time frame in which things are expected to happen and if it doesn’t, there will be hell to pay. their judge clerks know what high expectations wren has and because wren is very clear on what has to be done by which time, their office runs pretty smoothly. there is the occasional upset though and it doesn’t help wren’s mood…
they are fair. they come from pretty mediocre beginnings and they knew people who were a lot poorer than they were. they are not some rich kid who got the position of judge. when they encounter families and couples in their courtroom, they try to give everyone a fair shake. they don’t automatically assume a mother should have full custody or that a poor household has less right to have their children with them in parental rights cases than rich parents. they also can admit when they were wrong and apologize, as it seems ludicrous to them not to. they would want others to do the same thing when they were wrong.
they are self-centered. their job, their needs, their dreams, their wants, their expertise always come before someone else’s and always takes priority in their assessments of situations, as well as in their planning. they are aware of it though and they are trying to stop themself from always putting themself first, but it isn’t as easy habit to break.
they are impatient. waiting around is not something wren enjoys. they want and need everything to happen now. they will start tapping their foot, huff and even loudly ask what the hell is taking so long wherever they are. this is a trait they are less aware of. they just want things to be done as they should, they say… as if everything in life runs on a timetable but then again, for wren it does.
Aesthetics
a snifter-style glass of whiskey neat with a hand wrapped around it, an onyx ring on the middle finger of it. a clean vinyl record spinning on a 1960′s restored vinyl player and filling the room with soft jazz music. an armoire of which a drawer is pulled out and filled with small, open boxes containing rolled-up ties, belts, and boxties. on top of the armoire, there is an open jewelry box that holds earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches, and pocket watches.

Walk this way - or any way - to better health
Tumblr media
April 01, 2022 - DALLAS - Whether youre taking a leisurely stroll through your neighborhood or a power-walk in the park, the American Heart Association, the worlds leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, says taking part in physical activity is one of the best ways to manage stress, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke and boost your mood.
Improved technology and the growing popularity of fitness applications, electronic wearables and step counters have made counting steps an easy way to count health benefits, as noted through a growing body of scientific research. A study presented at the American Heart Associations Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle & Cardiometabolic Health Conference 2021 (EPI), found that
Study participants who took more steps in short spurts lived longer, regardless of how many steps they had in longer, uninterrupted bouts. The benefits leveled off at about 4,500 steps a day in short spurts.
Compared to no daily steps, each initial increase of 1,000 steps a day was associated with a 28% decrease in death during the follow-up period.
A 32% decrease in death was noted in participants who took more than 2,000 steps daily in uninterrupted bouts.
Middle-aged people who walked the most steps-per-day had a 43% lower risk of diabetes and a 31% lower risk of high blood pressure, compared to those with the fewest steps, according to research presented at the Associations 2020 EPI Conference. For women in the study, each 1,000-step interval resulted in a 13% lower risk of obesity, and those with the highest step count were 61% less likely to have obesity, compared to women who walked the least.
People who took at least 7,000 steps a day had a 50% to 70% lower risk of dying compared with people who took fewer than 7,000 steps a day, according to a study published in September in the journal JAMA Open Network. Researchers found that a higher daily step count (over 10,000 steps) lowered the risk of premature death from any cause among Black and white middle-aged women and men.
Walking is a great way to improve your health and your mental outlook, and it doesnt take a lot of expensive sporting equipment to do it. Put on a good pair of shoes and grab a water bottle and youre ready to go, said Donna K. Arnett, M.S.P.H., Ph.D., B.S.N., a past president of the American Heart Association (2012-2013) and the dean and a professor in the department of epidemiology of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health in Lexington. It doesnt matter how fast or how far you walk, the important thing is to get moving. Counting steps doesnt have to be part of a structured exercise program. Increasing your everyday activity, like parking slightly further from your destination, doing some extra housework or yardwork and even walking your dog can all add up to more steps and better health.
The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. You can knock that out in just 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. And every minute of moderate to vigorous activity counts toward your goal.
Arnett points out that walking indoors at home, in a gym or even a mall can be easy ways to get beneficial physical activity. However, research indicates that being outdoors in areas rich with trees, shrubs and grass (i.e., a higher level of greenness) may help reduce the risk of dying from heart disease.
Unfortunately, many people do not have access to safe walking trails or adequate green space. The American Heart Association continues to advocate for policy changes that make it easier for people to have access to safe places to walk, exercise and play, as well as sustainable transportation options that integrate walking, bicycling and wheelchair use, Arnett said. The easier it is for people to engage in physical activity in all aspects of their daily life, the more likely we are to achieve healthier, longer lives for everyone.
Visit catalogue printing homepage for more details.
National Walking Day is Wednesday, April 6, 2022. Established by the American Heart Association and celebrated on the first Wednesday in April, National Walking Day is a day take a walk, move, dancedo whatever works to get you moving and help you kick-off a commitment to a lifetime of healthy living.

How are Music & Arts Used in Bible Translation Ministries? (podcast)
SIL is a global, faith-based nonprofit that works with local communities around the world to develop language solutions that expand possibilities for a better life. Art is a form of communication, and SIL & Wycliffe Bible Translators recognize the value of communicating in the ways most familiar to individual communities. They want people to comprehend the Bible and worship in the language that is most natural to them, that speaks most to them. Whether they’re an artist or not, there is a music that most resonates with them. Artistic communication is especially integral in oral tradition cultures that have no written language.
Trevor Schuh has been a ministry colleague for many years. Here his recent interview on this -minute podcast: https://mpetersonmusic.com/podcast/episode95?
Trevor Schuh, the International Coordinator for Ethnomusicology & the Arts for SIL International. Trevor holds a Master of Arts degree in World Arts from Dallas International University. He has served as a missionary with Wycliffe Bible Translators for 13 years, which included time spent as an Arts Specialist for indigenous language communities in Brazil. Trevor is a musician – in addition to his work with SIL, he also is a church worship director.

Notes from the podcast page: We discuss ...
* What are “EthnoArts?” It started with enthnomusicology, but has expanded to include other arts such as dance, visual arts, etc… so “ethnoarts.” The boxes around these “genres” of art are much more blurred in non-western cultures (e.g., dance and music always go together). * How and why did ethnoarts become a part of SIL’s work and Wycliffe’s Bible translation work? * How are SIL and Wycliffe related? * The principle behind SIL’s EthnoArts is that they want to see people worshipping in ways that are natural to them. This is the same reason Wycliffe translates the Bible – they want people to experience the Bible in the language that best suits them, usually their mother tongue. Art is another form of communication, and the best language for communication should be utilized. * People communicate in nearly 7,000 languages around the world, but not just by spoken words. We also connect through artistically-rendered arts, such as song, drama, dance, sculpture and story. * All ethnolinguistic communities struggle with challenges brought on by a rapidly globalizing world. These include the breakdown of cultural transmission between generations and figuring out how to express their values and emotions. * Challenges may also be more traumatic where there is war, disease and sexual violence. SIL’s arts personnel have helped communities heal from trauma that accompanies war, displacement, trafficking, etc. * SIL arts personnel help communities draw on their artistic forms of communication to create a better future: one of justice, peace, joy, physical safety, social continuity, and spiritual wholeness. * Examples of ethnoarts making a real difference in SIL’s ability to “develop language solutions that expand possibilities for a better life.” * Some cultures have 16 genres! Some may be only for telling stories, for women, for ceremonial use, for certain age demographics; etc. * Listeners may be familiar with UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It seeks to build peace through international cooperation in Education, the Sciences and Culture. For over 10 years, SIL has been an accredited NGO with UNESCO “Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)” initiative. SIL provides advisory services to the ICH Committee and helps countries prepare for ICH status. UNESCO broadly defines ICH as oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe, and the knowledge/skills to produce traditional crafts. * SIL also partners with the Global Ethnodoxology Network (GEN). * SIL’s Sparking Creativity podcast is starting soon: Come hear stories about a growing movement in Christian cross cultural ministry and development work around the globe. We explore principles at play when communities incorporate their cultural art forms to better themselves, address needs and reach their goals.

For David Sawyer, storytelling has allowed him to become one of the youngest CEO's in the country. As a senior at Stetson University in Deland, Florida, Sawyer is the CEO and founder of TSOLife, a web application that allows users to share their own legacies for future generations.

Chances are your parents used to tell you you wouldn't be able to get a good job without a college degree. In previous decades, this may have been truer than it is today. Because even people with college degrees have a hard time finding employment these days.

At least on Amazon, the potential buyer knows that a customer who left a review bought the product because it’s verified by Amazon. The review may include his comments and a photo of him with the product. As a marketer, I think that’s a way more powerful investment to make. The other option is either Enhanced Brand Content or A+ content, depending on what type of merchant you are. For A+/EBC, I really like Fitbit and how they’ve merchandised the individual listing.
A responsively designed website is dynamic, adaptive and built from the ground up for an evolving internet. Where do you do the vast majority of your browsing nowadays? For some of us, it’ll still be the classic desktop or laptop, but for a huge percentage, it’s mobile devices. That’s exactly why it’s crucial for websites to be responsively designed. "Every dog has its day" as the old expression goes, which in the case of the humble business card means that it's "15 minutes of fame" has, rather remarkably, persisted for well over 400 years. His grandmother's death inspired a vision; David Sawyer's interview may inspire you as well. Storytelling is the most powerful way to put ideas into the world today.
