Bering and Wells Advent Calendar
Tumblr media
A bit spontaneous, but this is a fanfic collab event we just came up with today on the discord server, us being @birdofdawning (idea for the fic) @lavendelhummel (advent calendar idea) and myself (collab idea):
24 days of Bering and Wells ficlets, creating a (semi-)cohesive getting together fanfiction! If you want to write for one of the days, sign up in a reblog addition or ask, and your name will be put on the list! You write your ficlet and aim to post it on the corresponding day of December, but as long as it’s posted some time in the month it’s fine. If you can coordinate with the people who post the days before yours, maybe tell us your planned summaries so everyone can adjust accordingly, that’s cool, but if the ficlets don’t fit together perfectly that’s alright, we’re just here to have a fun B&W advent time!
“Never get involved with a roommate!” The fanfic idea is: each day’s title is something Myka tells herself not to do in order to avoid getting involved with Helena, and of course ends up doing anyway.
Update: all fics now linked here!
No minimum wordcount - you can write a drabble as long as it fits the theme!
The setting we came up with on discord is an AU in which Helena and Myka live in the same apartment - less baggage than canon, but just as many feels! More details to it can be found here!
The daily prompts are below the cut. If you have ideas for what else Myka might want to avoid doing but don’t want to write it yourself, feel free to send in the prompt!
As apparently tumblr no longer shows the most recent version of a post when clicking under the readmore of a reblogged post, please check with the original post to see which days haven't been chosen yet!
For the readers: you can find all entries under #BeringWellsAdvent23!
We can still rearrange most of the prompts! If you want for example prompt 4 but don't think you'll finish it in time, tell me another (still free) day with your sign-up.
#1 moving in together - @lavendelhummel is taking on this one
#2 Never have a crush on your flatmate - chosen by @purlturtle
#3 Never be alone with the housemate you have a crush on - Charlie @akittennameddaisy is taking on this one with the idea that Helena tries to cook, creates a chaos in the kitchen and Myka ends up alone with her after all!
#4 Never tell her how much you like her hair - chosen by @viharistenno
#5 Free Space - @lilolilyr is doing ‘stop staring at Helena!’
#6 never let Helena persuade you to watch a movie with her - chosen by @purlturtle: "because forced prolongued proximity in a dark room and WHO EVEN KNOWS what kind of movie Helena might pick!"
#7 Never borrow Helena's clothes - claimed by @jesstrel
#8 Never let Helena wear your clothes - chosen by @lilolilyr "I think seeing Helena in her own clothes might feel even more intimate to Myka than wearing HG's clothes"
#9 Free Space - @purlturtle chose 'don't let her convince you to go to the swimming pool / gym with you'
#10 Never let Helena give you a back rub - by @purlturtle
#11 never watch Helena eat ice-cream (the lip-licking will drive you insane) - chosen by @purlturtle
#12 Don't let Helena read poetry to you - chosen by @sallysetonbw
#13 Don't use her shampoo, that's weird -chosen by @lavendelhummel
#14 never borrow that blanket she keeps on the back of the armchair - chosen by @violetren
#15 Never listen in to Helena when she's on the phone - @purlturtle
#16 never sit right next to her on the couch - chosen by @lilolilyr
#17 Make sure you're not the only one laughing at her obscure jokes - chosen by @thiakerrigan
#18 Never fall in love with your flatmate - chosen by @lilolilyr
#19 Don't let her see you in your pyjamas - @lilolilyr
#20 never go on a road trip together @purlturtle
#21 Free Space @tryingthisfangirlthing
#22 @lavendelhummel Never go to the Christmas market with Helena
#23 Never match your flatmate on a dating site - chosen by @lavendelhummel
#24 Never kiss her on the lips - @lilolilyr
Post your fics to Ao3 in the BeringWellsAdvent collection and/or on tumblr with the hashtag BeringWellsAdvent23! If you want to use a header for example for a tumblr post, you can use this made by @viharistenno and @purlturtle:
Tumblr media
Some other ideas to fill the 'Free Space' days with:
- don't let her convince you to go to the swimming pool / gym with you
- don't imagine Helena naked
- don't suggest to cook for her (because Myka would get so caught up in her perfectionism that she'd spiral and feel so bad about what she's setting in front of Helena)
- don’t share a room/bed with Helena
- STOP STARING
- never masturbate to thoughts of your flatmate
- don’t share a drink with Helena
- Never give her a gift or accept a gift from her
- never lend her your car
- Never lend her money again

Bering and Wells Advent Calendar Day 14!
I wrote little thing!
#14 Never Borrow That Blanket She Keeps on the Back of the Armchair.
It's promising to be a long, cold winter's night. There's no harm in borrowing a blanket when its owner isn't home. Right?
Or, Myka is an increasingly hot mess over her housemate even when she isn't there.
Mundane/Modern non-warehouse AU. A complete and semi self contained story that is part of an ongoing collection.
Rating: G No Archive Warnings Apply Pairing: Bering and Wells (Myka Bering/Helena "H.G." Wells) Words: 3,388
Happy holidays everybody. Cheers.

Welcome to the Bering and Wells- Advent calendar!
I am so happy this got born out of a silly conversation, and worked out so spontaneously! It was so fun to come up with the ideas, and there are still free days, if someone wants to join in the fun!
Due to the spontaneity, I wrote this a lot more hastily than anything before and half asleep (both, at work and at night), so I hope it still is a good read:
Myka lives with her friends in an apartment that has a room clearing up; Helena is moving in on the first of December. What happens next is to discover in the days to follow, here they carry boxes and meet for the first time.
So - happy December and happy reading!
(I am looking forward to read what the others create for us for the next few days so much! So exciting!!)
I will be back for this the 13th, and again, there are still free spots!

Bering and Wells Advent Calendar, Day 11
Tumblr media
Never Get Involved With Your Flatmate, a collaborative writing event: everyone writes one chapter of a loosely connected getting together AU!
Here's my contribution for Day 11:
#11: never watch Helena eat ice-cream (the lip-licking will drive you insane)
(fic is under the readmore, or on AO3 if you want! The whole AO3 collection is here!)
Tumblr media
It’s Monday, and Myka isn’t sore anymore. Just like Helena promised, her mind insists, but she shushes it into silence. New week, new morning, new opportunity to be a responsible adult around Helena, one who totally isn’t acting on any kind of crush, one who has it together and it calm and collected and acts appropriately to what they are to each other: housemates and people who work in the same workplace.
So when a general message pops up shortly before noon, that there’s leftover ice cream from an early morning business meeting, which will be available in the break room “as of now, until it’s all gone”, Myka does the appropriate adult thing, the thing that she always does in this kind of situation, and does not go there. She doesn’t eat sugar, after all, and she knows there are a lot of people (Pete foremost among them) who will enjoy the ice cream, and for whom there will be just that little bit more of it because Myka is refraining.
Yes. Perfect.
Until there’s a knock on her door, and Helena is peeking in, and she has two mini ice cream tubs in one hand and two spoons in the other. “Saved you one,” she beams, and launches into an account how she protected these two small containers at great personal risk from the greedy grubby hands of such as Pete and Claudia, and she suspected that butter pecan might be a flavor that Myka would like—
Myka narrows her eyes at her. “Pete told you that,” she accuses flatly. From how Helena’s face immediately reddens, and how her expression immediately becomes very innocent, Myka knows she’s right. “Did he also tell you that I don’t eat sugar?”
“He says that you say you don’t,” Helena says, and then she tilts her chin down and lowers her voice conspiratorially, “but that you can be persuaded.” She smiles, then, and Myka is halfway swayed already. “And then he said to say that it’s for your own good and it’s almost Christmas and to live a little.” Helena’s smile turns hopeful. “And to judge from the fact that you haven’t evicted me from your premises – dare I hope that this might be such a time where persuasion might work? Great personal risk, after all.”
Myka shakes her head – but she doesn’t say no, and then Helena is all the way into the room and sitting down on the corner of Myka’s desk, careful not to disturb the note cards with which Myka is planning the menu for Christmas Week. And Monday morning really is not the time for ice cream or “living a little”, but Helena is wearing a very businesslike pencil skirt and now she’s crossing her legs and Myka has no idea what they were talking about or what she was protesting against until Helena holds out the ice cream to her.
“I have snatched a sample of salted caramel for myself,” she imparts, as if pulling Myka into the deepest of confidences. “A good match, if I say so myself.”
And so stunned is Myka by the idea that Helena’s ice cream is a good match for her, Myka’s, ice cream, that she takes the proffered little tub from Helena’s hands.
Helena’s face just lights up with a brilliant smile. “Aces!” she exclaims, and pops the lid off of her container. Even before she digs in, she just looks at the ice cream and moans. “Oh, this looks delectable!”
Myka can only nod weakly, after that moan. She dimly remembers to open her own tub, to position the spoon in such a way as to scoop up some ice cr—
Helena has scooped up some ice cream, and has put the spoon in her mouth, and she—
More moaning, and—
And she’s, she’s sucking on the spoon, and—
Oh god.
The spoon drops from Myka’s hand, and she dives after it, glad to have her desk in between her and the vision of Helena sucking ice cream off a spoon.
It’s not like she can’t still see it, in vivid detail, splashed across her brain everywhere she looks.
Lips still slightly pink from lipstick, shiny spoon held in elegant hand, wrist so fragile, just bones and tendons and Myka knows the strength and the – god – the precision of Helena’s hands and cannot help but wonder about the precision of her tongue on that shiny silver spoon.
Myka can’t hide forever under her desk, but she sure as hell can wish that she could.
When she resurfaces, Helena is licking ice cream from the back of the spoon.
Myka can’t well sink down again, much as she wishes she could.
And Helena licks her lips next, and Myka can’t help but think how cold her tongue must feel against the warm of her lips and—
The ice cream tub falls from her hand.
She has another excuse to dive from view.
She just wants to sit here, knees pulled up to her chest and arms wrapped around them, and maybe whimper a little to herself, until Helena is gone.
This – this is just too much. How can anyone stand this? It is unfair, is what it is, with Helena so—
“Myka? Are you alright?”
Helena is hanging over the edge of Myka’s desk, hair falling down like a black waterfall, and all Myka wants to do is cut through the particle board of her desk with her shoulder blades and get away to regain some semblance of composure. “Yeah,” she croaks instead, and hopes that her voice sounds only sheepish and nothing else, “just, ah, just dropped my ice cream.”
“Well,” Helena grins, “how fortunate that it is still frozen enough to not have spilled. There it is, darling, right by your calf.”
And she points that slender dexterous deft finger, and Myka wants to scoot even further away to make sure she doesn’t accidentally touch because surely Myka will incinerate on the spot if Helena touches her again.
And then Helena licks the corner of her lips, and surely she doesn’t think anything of it because why would anyone think anything of that; you have a bit of ice cream (or whatever, really) in the corner of your mouth, you notice it, you lick it away – it’s a completely mundane, utterly understandable course of action.
And then she touches her finger to the other corner of her mouth, wipes some more minuscule remnants of salted caramel ice cream away, and subsequently licks off that fingertip.
It’s as if she wants Myka to combust.
Luckily, at that moment, Myka’s phone rings, and there’s a flurry of hands at cross purposes as for who will grab the dropped ice cream tub and who will grab the other one’s wrist to offer assistance, there’s a thud when Myka’s head meets the underside of her desk and a brief, intense exchange of worry and reassurance, a hand flapping towards the door and another hand waving goodbye, one last look of concerned eyes, and then Myka can finally answer her call—
Pete, asking how she likes the ice cream.
She hangs up immediately; serve him right for instigating this whole fiasco.
He calls again.
“I hit my head!” she snaps into the receiver in tones of accusation, because surely as the instigator of all this, that is his fault too.
“You what?”
“I hit my head! Because of your stupid ice cream!” She rubs her scalp – it wasn’t that bad of a knock; it probably won’t even bruise. But he doesn’t need to know that.
His snort is a sharp crackle through the phone line. “Let me guess – HG was right there when you hit your noggin, am I right?”
Myka scoffs. “Details.”
“So I am right,” he says smugly. Then his voice turns concerned. “You didn’t conk her while trying to kiss her, didya?”
“No! Pete!” Myka palms her forehead. “I was trying to get out from under my desk to answer your stupid phone call!”
“But why were you— Myka, were you hiding from HG and her ice cream?!”
Myka wants to drag her entire face down with her hand, the way cartoon characters do – Pete does make her want to do that, quite often actually. “No,” she says, with as much patience as she can muster, “I had dropped my ice cream and it had rolled under the desk somewhere.”
“Mykes,” he intones solemnly, “you’re the smartest person I know, but sometimes I despair. Why would you drop your ice cream, for God’s sake?”
And that’s the salient point, really. “Because Helena was licking her lips,” Myka says in a very small voice.
There is silence on the line. Then, another crackle, a long one, as Pete blows out a breath. Myka can just about see him rub the back of his neck. She is grateful that he isn’t laughing, though she wouldn’t hold it against him if he was suppressing it to save her feelings. Then, at long last, he says, “May I just repeat: you are the smartest person I know, but sometimes I despair.”
Myka slumps in her seat. “I know,” she sighs, defeated.
“New rule, huh?” he asks, and there is true compassion in his voice.
“Definitely.”
“No more ice cream?”
“No more ice cream. For Helena. In my presence.” No, that sounds wrong. “Never watch Helena eat ice cream,” Myka amends. “I won’t stop her from eating ice cream. She is free to eat all the ice cream she wants, wherever she wants, forever. I’ll just… turn aside. I just won’t look.”
“At this point, Mykes,” Pete says, slow and sad, “I’m not actually sure you can.”
She blows a raspberry into the receiver and hangs up the phone, like the responsible and appropriately-acting professional adult that she is.
(Note: The notion of “people dropping things when their crush is near” is not my idea – I want, need, must tip my hat to Apparitionism’s Release)

The Advent Time is over, Happy Christmas!
We have achieved a 25 part and ~39k words long story written by ten people! Most works are rated G or T, and you can still follow the storyline if you skip the fic with adult content.
All works in the Ao3 Collection
The Advent story: Myka and the gang (Pete, Claudia, Leena and Steve) live in an apartment and Helena moves in with them. Myka finds herself attracted to Helena, but remembers Pete's golden rule "Don't get involved with your roommates", so she tries to repress the infatuation and sets rules for herself. In each fic, one of these rules gets explained - and then summarily thrown out the window!
Moodboard for the story
Part 1: The Crush
Read the entries for day 1 and 2 first as an introduction to the AU! Under 3k words long, all rated G
1. Never Fall for your Roommate: December 1st: Move-in, new roommate
2k G by @lavendelhummel tumblr
Helena is moving in on the first of December.
2. Never have a crush on your flatmate
<1k G by @purlturtle tumblr
"Never get a crush on your flatmate" - well, good luck with that, Myka!
Part 2: The Rules
While some parts refer to past ficlets, you can pretty much read the entries to days 3-17 in any order you like, and if there is anything you don’t like to read, because of a topic or the smut fic, you can skip it and continue with the other fanfic. Over 20k words total
3. Never be alone with the housemate you have a crush on
<1k G by @akittennameddaisy
Rule 3: Never be alone with the housemate you have a crush on. Guess how well that goes.
4. Never tell her how much you like her hair
<1k G by @viharistenno tumblr
Myka's quickly developing crush combined with Helena's disarming smile and her undeniably magnificent hair leads to some inner struggle.
5. Don't Stare!
1k rated T by @lilolilyr tumblr
Myka can't seem to stop looking at Helena. She has every intention to stop, but then she runs into her somewhere unexpected...
6. Never let Helena persuade you to watch a movie with her
<1k G by @purlturtle tumblr
because forced prolonged proximity in a dark room and WHO EVEN KNOWS what kind of movie Helena might pick!
7. Never borrow Helena's clothes
1k G by @jesstrel
Myka gets distracted. Hijinks ensue...
8. Never Let Your Crush Wear Your Clothes
3k G by @lilolilyr tumblr
It’s not that Myka doesn't want to lend Helena clothes, rather she'd enjoy it way too much! alas, that resolution doesn't last very long...
9. Don't let her convince you to go to the gym with you
1k G by @purlturtle tumblr
Seriously, what could go wrong?
10. Never let Helena give you a back rub
1k G by @purlturtle tumblr
11. Never watch Helena eat ice cream
1k G by @purlturtle tumblr
... the lip-licking will drive you insane.
12. Never let Helena read poetry to you.
<1k G by @sallysetonbw
Letting your crush read poetry to you? Rookie mistake, Myka.
13. Never use her shampoo, that is weird!
2k G by @lavendelhummel
Thinking about her roommate while washing her hair is completely risk free, right?
14. Never Borrow That Blanket She Keeps on the Back of the Armchair
3k G by @violetren tumblr
There's no harm in borrowing a blanket when its owner isn't home. Right?
15. Never listen in on Helena talking on the phone
3k G by @purlturtle tumblr
Not only is it rude, but one might overhear things - but oh, how hard that is, when the listened-in-on person has such a pretty voice!
16. Never sit next to her on the couch
1k G by @lilolilyr tumblr
Myka wanted to avoid this situation at all cost. But the second she feels safe in the living room, Helena is right there, next to her!
17. Make sure you're not the only one laughing at her obscure jokes
1k G by @thiakerrigan tumblr
Poor Myka. Sometimes there are just too many Incidents in one day.
Part 3: Falling in Love
While 18-21 are still separate ficlets about Myka’s rules, they take place after an important change for Myka: she noticed that she is in love with Helena. For the best reading experience, read those ficlets after you finish with the entries to the earlier days! Under 4k words.
18. Never Fall In Love With Your Flatmate

19. Never let her see you in your pyjamas
<1k rated T by @lilolilyr tumblr
20. Never Take A Trip With Your Crush

21. Never Masturbate to Thoughts of Your Roommate
1k rated E by @tryingthisfangirlthing
It's just common sense.
Part 4: getting together
The last parts of the AU follow a more connected storyline, so you should read them in the right order! Over 10k words total.
22. Never go to the Christmas market with Helena!
4K G by @lavendelhummel tumblr
Myka lets her roommates convince her to go out. Guess who she will meet there...
23. Never match your roommate on a dating app!

The falling out of the Christmas market disaster surely will be easier on Myka. Surely!
24. Never Kiss Her On The Lips

The AU Setting
If you haven’t heard yet - there’s an Advent writing collab happening for Bering and Wells this year! You can find out more about what’s going on and join in on the fun on this post :)
The wonderful @lavendelhummel and @purlturtle have worked out a setting for us to use so the ficlets fit together as well as possible! You don’t have to follow it to the letter, if you’ve already started and something doesn’t quite fit, or the muse just takes you into a different direction, don’t worry about it, your fic will still be part of the collection, just do your best!
The main points:
modern-no-Warehouse AU
takes place during the advent time
Flatmates and coworkers: Myka, Pete, Claudia, Lena, Steve & Helena
Helena is the newcomer
Landlady Mrs F
They work at a hotel next door
“Never get involved with your housemates or co-workers” - a rule Pete has taught Myka, and she tries her best to stick to it!
If you want to try to follow what others are doing with their parts as closely as possible, there is also a Google doc with more details about the apartment, their work environment and the storyline:
In comments, you can also add your own points to the setting, for example if you start writing a story and decide on a backstory for Myka, what exactly Helena’s job is, or come up with a favourite band for Claudia, add it in a comment and the people who start writing after you can try to follow your lead!
Tagging everyone who has signed up or shown interest in signing up so far:
@akittennameddaisy @sallysetonbw @violetren @julieverne @lilolilyr @purlturtle @lavendelhummel @barbarawar @viharistenno @absedarian @thiakerrigan @birdofdawning

Happy Christmas! I had so much fun with this event :) It’s amazing that we got a fic for every day, and a total wordcount of almost 40k!
Today‘s ficlet is something I wrote together with the day 24 fic but thought I’d post as an independent scene for Christmas Day.

Bering and Wells Advent Calendar - you can still sign up!
Tumblr media
The premise is a no-Warehouse modern AU: Myka and the gang (Pete, Claudia, Leena and Steve) live in an apartment and Helena moves in with them. Myka finds herself attracted to Helena, but remembers Pete's golden rule "Don't get involved with your roommates", so she tries to repress the infatuation and sets rules for herself. In each fic, one of these rules gets explained - and then summarily thrown out the window!
Some fics have already been posted and most other days have found a writer, but some days are still free to be claimed at this point in time:
#15 Don't imagine Helena naked
#19 Don't let her see you in your pyjamas
#20 Never watch Helena eat ice-cream
#21 Never listen in to Helena when she's on the phone
#22 Never go to the Christmas market with Helena
#24 Never kiss her on the lips (in collab with day 23!)
You can also use your own ideas instead of sticking to the prompts! Also, except for day 24, the prompts can be re-arranged to different days. Send an ask with the prompt and which day you want to post on to sign up!
