Medusa’s Lair: How a Series of Errors Created the Most Dangerous Place on Earth
Imagine a landscape, marked with the ruins of an old, abandoned civilization. Nature has overrun what the inhabitants left behind, the fauna run wild, aggressive toward intruders. The flora, water, and even the air are poison.
This isn't some far-off alien world, it's an area encompassing everything within 19 miles (30 kilometers) of what is incontestably the most dangerous room on Earth, a room which to merely enter is to court death .
This is the true story of how, on one morning in the spring of 1986, a combination of human error and mechanical flaws sired a monster.
This is the story of Medusa's lair.
Tumblr media
The Day the Devil Was Born
Nuclear fission reactors use isotopes of radioactive materials like Uranium as fuel, and harness the energy from its splitting atoms to convert water into steam to spin a turbine and generate electricity. The fuel is arranged in such a way that the rate of reaction remains at a level that can more easily be managed and controlled; as you would expect, there are a number of safety measures built into fission reactors to ensure the nuclear materials sustain their chain reaction in a (relatively) safe and stable manner. I won’t go into more detail than to say that those measures exist, since this story isn’t about how a nuclear fission reactor works.
It’s about what happened when a certain reactor stopped working.
On the morning of April 26th 1986, the operators at a nuclear power plant in the northern Ukranian SSR were running a series of tests to see how their reactors would function in a prolonged low-power state. During these tests, a combination of procedural violations, operational oversights, and a fatal design flaw in the reactors used at the facility created a chain of events that led to possibly the worst nuclear disaster in history.
As a result of the series of events and decisions that led to catastrophe, the reactor was generating well over ten times what it was designed to generate before the energy became too much for the unit; the building heat and pressure violently threw the lid off of the reactor core.
The lid weighed 1,000 tons.
At the moment the shield was dislodged, hydrogen, oxygen, and super-heated nuclear materials collided and ignited, resulting in an explosion that ripped the building open and threw eight tons of radioactive material into the world.
With no remaining safeguards to slow the reaction of the nuclear fuels burning at the bottom Reactor #4, the fissioning materials got hot enough to literally melt down, and then they kept getting hotter, reaching hellish temperatures nearly three times as hot as the inside of an active crematorium. Hot enough to glow incandescently.
Meanwhile firefighters battled the Uranium and Graphite fires with water, sand, clay, and other materials. Many of them succumbed to radiation poisoning, as it took nine days to extinguish the fires. But the radioactive material at the base of the reactor was still hot.
The facility’s name was Chernobyl, and beneath the basement of Reactor #4 lies a truly terrifying monster.
What Lurks Below
Tumblr media
If you were ever asked what the most dangerous thing man ever created was, Corium would be a solid answer. Corium is a molten mix of nuclear fuel, fission products, other metals, and concrete produced when a nuclear reactor melts down and the resulting lava melts through the floor of the reactor room.
After the fuel rods at Reactor #4 melted down, the liquid Uranium flowed to the bottom of the reactor, melting through the walls and the concrete below it in just eight days. It flowed through the pipes and corridors at Chernobyl to the basement, taking all manner of unnatural formations and nightmarish shapes.
One uniquely dangerous deposit of Uranium Oxide, sand, silicate glass, and molten metal would become infamous in the coming months as the single absolute deadliest thing our world had ever seen.
Eight months after the explosion that turned the city of Pripyat into a dead zone, nuclear inspectors were in the basement of Reactor #4, searching for the remains of the core materials and the fuel rods. They turned a corner and laid eyes on a two ton slab of Corium still slowly eating its way into the Earth. The artifact had adapted a wrinkled, gray exterior—and was thus named the Elephant’s Foot.
Tumblr media
The photo above was taken in 1990. Of the photo, Dr. William Zoller wrote:
This is a slide I obtained from the Russians. It shows what is called “elephant’s foot.” It is melted Uranium fuel in the levels below the Chernobyl reactor… So what we’re looking at are mounds of melted fuel that have now congealed and solidified. Obviously, the radiation cloud in this is a very highly radioactive mass. The Russians obtained this picture by sending a man down there with a camera. He took one picture, and then came back up. I was told that he died from the radiation he received. So this picture cost a man his life.
You read that right.
This is the real-life Medusa; a monster that kills anything standing next to it, simply by being there.
High-energy radiation a given object emits is measured in Roentgen, and the radiation absorbed by living tissue is measured in rad. One Roentgen may deposit anywhere from 1 to 4 rad in bone, so for simplicity’s sake let's say that one Roentgen of emission results in at least one rad of absorption.
To better grasp how dangerous this formation is, understand that 400 rad is considered the median lethal dose of absorbed radiation in humans, and that 1,000 rad is regarded as an absolute lethal dose; a person exposed to 400 Roentgen for 1 hour has a 50% chance of dying from radiation poisoning, and if an identical person were to be exposed to 1,000 Roentgen for that same hour, his fate is sealed (note that my understanding of how ionizing radiation is absorbed is at a very, very, basic-level, but I’ve checked sources written by subject experts and my math seems to work).
When the Elephant’s Foot was first found eight months after its formation, it was emitting 10,000 Roentgen; if you were to stand near it, you would receive an absolute lethal dose of radiation—you would die, regardless of treatment—after just three and a half minutes of exposure.
By 2001, its radioactivity had sharply declined but you still wouldn’t be able to spend more than sixty minutes in its presence without receiving a fatal dose of radiation; present estimates place its radioactivity at a level that you wouldn’t be able to spend more than a few hours near it without absorbing a lethal measure of radiation.
It’s not as incontrovertibly deadly as it was over 30 years ago when it was first formed but make no mistake, the Elephant’s Foot—Medusa—is still hot, and is still slowly eating its way down into the Earth.
All efforts to destroy it have thus far been unsuccessful, and the expanse of land around it remains uninhabitable, and will for the next three to six centuries. Today, Reactor #4 is entombed in a steel sarcophagus but the Elephant’s Foot remains. It will stay alone in its dark lair for centuries, a sobering reminder and symbol of our own awesome potential.
Tumblr media
There is so much more to the story of Chernobyl, Reactor #4, and everything leading up to the disaster—more than I can ever fit into a blog post. If you’re as curious and fascinated by this stuff as I am, and would enjoy a compelling story, I can’t recommend HBO’s historical drama Chernobyl enough. It’s basically a six-hour movie cut up into five pieces that tells the story of the disaster itself, the cleanup efforts that followed, and the decisions that led to them in the first place.
But if you’d rather do the research yourself, I can at least point you in a few directions.

The Perks of Home Remodeling in Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona
Living in a private home is seen as aristocratic, but only if it is well-equipped and gives maximum comfort to its occupants. One shouldn't expect a high level of comfort from a suburban house that was recently purchased and is still being finished or that is long out of date. Home renovation service is unavoidable in this situation, and it is advisable to commit it to skilled professionals. A reputable home remodeling service provider is always ready to change the property into an ideal home for those looking for dependable home remodeling professionals. Remodeling any house can be done for a variety of reasons. The following are some of the most significant advantages of house remodeling: No Need to Move: Is there any need for another reason? Moving is one of the most stressful experiences a person can have. Moving to a new place means finding a new apartment close to work, leaving a familiar space. The most significant impact of any move is children changing the school, leaving their friends. It causes a massive impact on their psyche. Getting a home renovation saves one from such hassles, eliminating the need to demolish the existing home. Add Value to the Home: Even if there are no such plans to leave anytime soon, it's a good idea to consider the home's resale value. A kitchen makeover, room extension, or other enhanced amenities may dramatically boost the home's total value. Maybe more crucially, the house will improve as a result of the process. Consider the following during a home remodeling in Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona. · Update fixtures and appliances in the kitchen and bathroom · Keep up with the newest interior design trends · Remodel a basement or attic to save money · Replace old windows or doors with new ones · Incorporate energy-saving measures to cut utility expenses and carbon emissions · Make a sophisticated haven for hosting friends and family, or simply a place to unwind. A renovation company is ready to assist clients in experiencing the benefits of home remodeling, whether they are looking for a new house or want to make the existing one feel brand new. The Perks of Home Remodeling: Customizing a Home: Proper space management contributes to home improvements by changing the layout of a room. a.      By placing light fixtures in strategic locations around the house, one may create whatever ambiance or mood one likes. b.      If a porch swing isn't already included in the design of the back porch, it can be what it needs. c.      A fireplace in the living room will provide a focal point and a comfortable vibe to any area and provide warmth on chilly winter nights. d.      Building an extension will give square footage and allow homeowners to utilize underutilized space. e.      Install a lazy Susan in that odd corner cabinet for easy access to all of the dishes without moving them. f.       Remove any off-brand appliances and replace them with stainless steel and built-in microwaves. g.      In the outdoor space, large trees give shade and solitude. Make the Home Useful: Whether it’s time for a bathroom makeover or kitchen remodeling, choosing a suitable kitchen and bathroom design in Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona, is essential. Sometimes, the poor floor plan makes it challenging to entertain guests; remodeling helps rearrange the entire space in the home, which meets the demands. Noticeably, the expectations might vary as the family grows.

King of My World
Prompt: Not a request - based off of Weezer’s song King of the World from their White Album. Song HERE.
Fandom: Be More Chill
Pairing: Michael Mell X Reader
Summary: You and Michael have always been there for each other, now is no different.
Word Count: 1,507
Warnings: Bad days, LOTS of negativity, depression (with comfort and reassurances)
A/N: I wanted some comfort, and who’s better at comfort than the cuddly Michael Mell? Sorry it gets really heavy at the beginning, but I hope that the fluffy ending is enough to counterbalance it. Also the song is kind of makes it seem like the reader is female, but I kept it gender neutral.
~~~
The world was going to hell in a handbasket. That was nothing new, but it still sucked. The news informed you about story after story of natural disasters and unspeakable crimes. To say that you were starting to lose faith in humanity was an understatement. As the night wore on and the anchorman continued to reveal more and more atrocities, you felt your chest constrict. How could the world be such an evil place?
That night you slept fitfully, mind racing with all the horrible things you saw on TV. The morning wasn’t much better, despite being a Friday, and you let out a heavy sigh as you ate breakfast before school. When you arrive, you see the faces of your classmates and realize that you all could be gone tomorrow, and it wouldn’t even make all that much of a difference.
Trying to shake those thoughts from your head you attempted to think about the fun you’ll have over your boyfriend Michael’s house after school as you grab some books from your locker. Speaking of the handsome devil, he comes up behind you and wraps an arm around your waist, giving you a peck on your cheek. Involuntarily smiling, you turn to him and kiss him on the nose, causing it to crinkle in the adorable way you love.
“Ready for our date tonight?” he asks, giving you a squeeze.
“You bet!” you respond, a little too quickly. He gives you a little look and you just give him another kiss before shutting your locker. Waving goodbye, you head to your first period. Letting out a sigh as you take your seat, you notice two big words written on the whiteboard of your Earth science class: Global Warming.
As class starts, you can feel yourself sinking further into yourself. You watch video after video of all the damage that’s been done, and is still happening to the planet due to carbon emissions and poor waste management. By the time the bell rings, you feel as if the world could end tomorrow.
Your next class doesn’t go much better. With all of the problems and voting issues that has been going on in Congress, your civics teacher decided to have a class discussion. A lot of your preppy classmates just followed their parents’ opinions and mimicked things that they had heard at home, it was obvious by how they spluttered when asked a contradicting question and repeated the same lines of ‘reasoning’ over and over.
Let’s just say that by the time the bell rang, you were very proud of yourself for not chucking a book at somebody. You were already done with the day, but you were able to get to lunch without any more unbearable classes. You sat next to Michael with a grateful sigh, grabbing his hand underneath the table. He gave you a concerned look, and you just squeezed his hand in reassurance, giving him a tired smile.
He brought your intertwined hands up and kissed the back of your hand, just as Jeremy sat down. “Aw, c’mon you guys. No lovey-dovey stuff in front of me when Christine is gone, you’re going to make me miss her even more.”
“Sorry Jer, you’re just going to have to deal with it cause I’m not going to stop loving (Y/N) just because your girlfriend is on vacation,” Michael said giving your hand another kiss, just for good measure. You couldn’t help the smile that made it’s way to your face, giving Michael’s hand a kiss in return.
Michael beamed at you, and you would give anything to stay in that moment. You, Michael, and Jeremy talked about random stuff, from TV to video games and food. It was a nice distraction from all of the heavy conversations that lingered in the back of your mind. Unfortunately, lunch can’t last forever, and you soon had to go to your next class. Giving Michael a kiss, you tried to prepare yourself for your personal finance class.
Your teacher decided to cover debt today, and relayed several horror stories about people who let their debt get out of hand, and how their lives will never be the same. History wasn’t much better with the parallels activity you had to do where you compared the past to the present. The class’s mass consensus was that humanity hadn’t learned anything since their last mistake, it totally made you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
When the day finally ended you practically ran to Michael’s cruiser, getting there even before him. He gave you a small kiss before unlocking the car and getting in. He drove to the 7/11 near his house and you two went inside and grabbed some snacks, including slushies, before finally arriving at your destination.
Carrying your snacks down to his basement, you set everything up for a movie marathon. He had plenty of pillows and blankets, and you ended up making a fort with a comfy nest inside. Michael climbed in and pulled you down into his arms as the movie started and you could feel yourself relaxing, forgetting about the rest of the world for a little bit.
He had decided to start with a lighthearted movie, and one of the Disney classics played on the screen. The music had lulled you into an even calmer headspace and soon enough you were dozing on Michael’s shoulder. Unfortunately, that didn’t last very long when you had a nightmare.
Awaking with a shout, Michael immediately began rubbing calming circles into your back as you gasped for air. But you couldn’t stop the gasping sobs that started to bubble out of your chest, your eyes starting to leak. Michael stopped the movie and pulled you closer to him, “It’s okay, I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
He starts to breathe deeply and you attempt to match his pace. Soon you were breathing evenly again, and you were calmed down a little. Sniffling, you buried your head in Michael’s chest and he just patted your head, fingers running through your hair. When you felt you could trust your voice, you pulled away slightly and said a quiet ‘thank you’.
“Hey, no need to thank me. Are you sure you’re okay?” You sniffle again, and give a small nod. “Do you want to talk about it?” His hand started rubbing up and down your back again and you leaned more into him. Taking a few more breaths, you slowly began to explain how the world felt so heavy with all of the shit that happened and how you felt so helpless in the grand scheme of things.
Michael dutifully listened, letting you vent your feelings to him without judgement. When you were finally done, he gave your temple a kiss before sitting and contemplating what to say. You sat in relative silence before Michael opened his mouth to respond.
“The world is a very complex place, but that doesn’t mean that you’re insignificant in it. And even if the world seems like a crappy place, because in all honesty it can be sometimes, that doesn’t stop the good things in the world from being noticed and making a difference.”
You give him a small smile which encourages him to continue. “Think of some of the good things that happened this week, and some of the things that are still around the corner, ready to make the world a better place!”
“Like what?” you ask in a small voice. Michael gives you a squeeze and grabs his phone. He types a few things and taps a few times before showing you some of the awesome things that are happening. New technology is being created, and advancing all the time. So many things are becoming more accessible, and people are giving so many nice gestures everyday.
Eventually Michael ends up just showing you pictures of cute little animals and you can’t help the smile that makes its way onto your face at how adorable the creatures are, and how amazing your boyfriend is.
You snuggle more into him and he gives you another kiss on the head. “Thank you,” you say, looking up at him, “I really needed to get that out.”
“Well I’m honored that you trust me enough to let me hear everything you have to worry about. We’re in this together, and I’m here for you no matter what. You know that right?” he asks, taking your hand and giving it a squeeze.
“If I didn’t before, I’m certainly sure of it now. But I knew before. I just let myself get too wrapped up in it. I don’t know what I would do without you.” You bring your hands up and give his a kiss. Michael smiles down at you and pulls you closer to him. Staying like that, you feel safe and hopeful for the future for the first time in awhile.
Michael Mell, King of my world, you think as you fall asleep to his gentle breathing. Thank you so much for existing.
tall buildings on going sustainable, is it really possible?
what was the first impression when you see and got the chance to work or live within an outrageous high-rise tall buildings? that amazed and wow-ness — luxury, fancy. you would feel like working in a notable company, a quiet night sleep surrounded by splendor ambiance, all-day, and night energized. however, the notion of "tall buildings" is always associated with mega energy consumers, far from sustainable architecture. like the thought of being "green" only applies to small and medium-rise projects for the heights are more convenient and possible to build. would that fact of working on a place that devastates the earth rather than ensuring its sustainability still make you proud? or rather, is it the architects' homework to actually adapt the heights into the environment's needs? incorporating the heights and the needsmaybe that was a long ago that we are not aware of how unsustainable the place we created, we worked in, or the daily basis we spent the most time in. the changing generation has brought in a new addition to the majority of high rise buildings. as the cities have rapidly grown, so does sustainable tall building becomes extraordinarily important in the 21st century following the needs of wisely use renewable resources, alternative strategies, and environmentally friendly design accompanied by advanced building technologies. given appraise to innovative and eco—friendly architects that have made living greener life possible across the scale of projects, these are some of the pickups for globally recognized high-rise buildings and skyscrapers integrated into green solutions to mitigate the environmental impact, ensuring livability for us living beings and the environment. o-14 dubai, the interplay of light and shadow by the shellprominently located along the waterfront esplanade of the extension of dubai creek, o-14 (read: oh-14) are a striking 300.000sqm and 22-storeys commercial tower featuring an eye-catching swiss-cheese look-alike concrete facade perforated by over 1000 circular openings. the architects, jesser reiser, and nanako umemoto have added an architectural and aesthetic addition to the tower's shell that serves as the prime structural component. providing an efficient exoskeleton that frees the core from the burden of lateral forces and creates a column-free, spacious interior of about 557sqm. the shell is organized in an efficient diagrid pattern that maintains a minimum structural member by adding material where necessary and taking it away. the concrete shell was designed to respond well to harsh desert conditions effectively than a typical glass-clad box; "robinson tower follows in the footsteps of kpf's work at marina bay financial centre, which first introduced the mixed-use model to singapore. this distinctive tower similarly embodies the integration of context, culture, and sustainability with architecture. our impactful scheme and its successful execution tap into kpf's expertise designing iconic buildings for global cities and buildings on constrained or otherwise tight sites in dense, urban areas." explained robert whitlock of kpf design principal. designed in a v-shaped plot, robinson tower offering an interface between market street and robinson road: featuring a high impact 20-storeys volumes of offices, ground floor topped by a beautiful garden where the occupants can adjacent themselves to marina bay's atmosphere. the type of design configuration has resulted in natural light in their interior space from each angle."at its core, this project presented the overlapping challenges of planning class-a office space on an irregular site with environmental checks. the dynamic tower frees itself from the canyon of stoic facades, integrating green space at unique vantage points and ultimately cultivating the public realm alongside a boutique, mixed-use program." -- bruce fisher, kpf design director. photo credits: tim griffith shanghai tower, promoting sustainable vertical cityfrom shanghai, china, the shanghai tower emerged as dwarfing its neighboring skyscrapers to represent a new paradigm of rethinking the concept of "sustainable vertical city" comprising a vertical neighborhood of 12 to 15 floors and an accessible sky garden to foster social interaction and sense of community in the area. according to the architect, gensler, shanghai tower's vertical neighborhood contains sky gardens that rise from the sky gardens that provide energy savings and ventilation advantages, formed by the interplay of the tower's two glass skins: the circular inner skin and the triangle with rounded corners exterior skin. it is further designed to create a sense of unity, to support daily life with a mixed-use program that caters to both tenant and visitors, and help ease traffic jams near elevators. not to forget mentioning the spectacular view of the city at all-time. the structural system comprises a concrete core and a few composite super-columns rests on a 20-foot-thick concrete mat of 1,079 bored piles. the building enjoys a robust 30 meters squared core designed to resist the threat of a windy climate, active earthquake zone, and clay-based soils typical of a river delta. some renewable energy technologies have also been applied to provide on-site energy; wind turbines beneath the parapet that generate power to the upper floors, natural gas-fired cogeneration system that provides electricity and heat energy to the lower floors. the tower collects rainwater through the building's spiraling parapet, which often is used to heat and provide air conditioning systems inside. the water treatment plants incorporated into the tower's shaft, podium, and a basement that reduce the energy required for pumps. sustainability in shanghai tower has risen from the structure to the very detailed internal systems such as recycling gray water or stormwater for irrigation and toilet flushing, resulting in a 30% decrease in water consumption. photo credits: gensler/shen zhonghai torre reforma, mobility at its coremoving far away from asian continent, situated at mexico city's renowned avenues, paseo de la reforma, a 2000sqm tall and 570-storeys skyscrapers with a 14-storeys clusters, has emerged as part of the site's cultural, historical, and financial district. along with an array of public leisure to accommodate casual to formal events ranging from sports facilities, bars, and restaurants, open spaces and terrace, gardens, auditorium and meeting rooms, the skyscrapers are one of the leading skyscrapers in mexico that have improved visual quality of the city's skyline as a street-level for pedestrians.the shape design was derived from many considerations including the city's social financial and environmental factors. resembling the form of an open book structure and closed by a third glass-facade-metallic diagrid. whereas, according to the architect, lbr + a, its facade enhances free space and reduces energy consumption by shifting from an all-glass facade generation. the facade was made of solid concrete influenced by the pre-hispanic and colonial era in mexican architecture history. unlike other typical skyscrapers, torre reforma highlights the importance of mobility at its core."the tower was designed to be very accessible and well connected to urban infrastructure and services. its strategic location is surrounded by essential avenues such as paseo de la reforma, avenida insurgentes, the longest avenue in mexico city, and circuito interior, an urban freeway connecting the city's central neighborhoods. at ground level, the sidewalks were expanded and made accessible for all users, giving priority to pedestrians rather than vehicles. the historical house was restored to recover its urban value, serving as a transition from a small scale at the pedestrian level to a high rise building scale. the existing infrastructure includes two subway stations, transit buses, and multiple public bicycle stations." explained the architect on its project description. torre reforma has also committed to obtaining sustainable performance by reducing the energy consumption up to 24% from its concrete walls and double glass facades with shades that allow natural lighting in all office spaces for a more comfortable and better performance. "rain and wastewater is 100% reused in the water treatment plant mainly for bathrooms and the air-conditioning. water tanks, located within the tower for a more effective water system, rely on gravity rather than pump use." added the architect. photo credits: alfonso merchand reference: sustainable tall buildings: cases from the global south | archdaily https://bit.ly/3jPduNm
Music Review: Face Reveal - Face Reveal
Face Reveal Face Reveal [Basement Corner Emissions; 2019] Rating: 2.5/5 The child’s face, converted by a few strokes, had vanished but in the notched teeth and gaping orbits, large enough to hold a car, we could still see an echo of its infant features. The spectre moved past us, the spectators frowning at this weeping skull whose rain fell upon their faces. Whatever its connotation or context — and as harsh as the individual sounds may be — “noise” is more accessible than most assume, or at least less challenging than pretensions would allow. For most of us, noise is omnipresent, all around us. But that hardly makes “noise,” the music, any easier to evaluate. The lack of an easy conclusion or precise musical taxonomy is partly what makes noise music so divisive of a subject. Genera vary widely, from harsh digital to the more experimental strains of Are Ay Double-U Kay. So how does noise manage to reveal itself in any straightforward, coherent fashion? We draw patterns in our minds. “How human it is to see a thing in something else.” Face Reveal, the latest from the Portland-area label formerly known as kv&gr/recs, dances on the thin line separating noise from noise-pattern, eschewing mimesis, timbre, and rhythm for a sound that is, ironically, easily imitable. The fact that no two harsh noise tracks sound alike is not lost here; it’s the resultant pattern-making that remains the same. There are no breaks to follow; this is pure unadulterated white noise. An anonymous project, the completely flippant title is something of a bait-and-switch; it’s an encouraging welcome to a world where there are no nominal rules. And though “freely improvised,” the tracks all consist of the same cosmic energy, a grey mishmash of digital dirge. There are only glimmers of musicality; there is no real expression, save for a punishing blandness that strikes, alternately, as smug or glum. Face Reveal by Face Reveal In 1972, musician Eugene Chadbourne infamously described Miles Davis’s 1972 noise-funk-inflected opus On the Corner as “pure arrogance.” But On the Corner was ahead of its moment, and time has been relatively kind to it. Less, however, can be said for the exponents drawn from its existence and influence. This is music that really does strike as crassly condescending. Unlike Davis, though, I highly doubt the goal of noise-makers is for their work to be remembered. This music is more of an ephemeral expression, a reflection of the present moment, something to be listened to once and maybe even forgotten. Forty-seven years from now, insha’Allah, I don’t think I will remember Face Reveal any more than the scores of noise releases I’ve already listened to or will listen to. More than being a good or bad thing, it’s a simple fact of its existence. It hardly rewards participation. http://j.mp/317UL5M
