I'm doing field work again for the summer in North Carolina so I apologize for the lack of Zig and Co. content. My job this field season focuses on finding and atlasing breeding behaviors in any and all breeding birds in the Piedmont region. Here's an adorable fledgling Tufted Titmouse I found today that I only noticed because it was conspicuously hanging on the side of a tree.

Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor)
Tumblr media
"i wasn’t going to submit this in case I knocked them out but it would only be fair and I love them too much" "small birb. cute lil orangy bit. the crest. It delight."
Tufted Titmice are a staple at many an Eastern USA feeder, in my experience. They've always been the second species to visit feeders I set up, coming in for sunflower seed, peanuts, and suet. Granted, the chances of attracting a titmouse are always higher if you live near proper woodlands or a tree-filled park.
Tufted Titmice belong to the tit family, a word which originally means "small". This family is incredibly vocal and often semi-social, with the young of the year often remaining with their parents in a loose family group until the next breeding cycle begins. This is typically seen as a safety measure, as tits of all kinds will sound the alarm if any danger is noticed- they're quick to chime into another bird's alarm call too, if they overhear a fuss.
Titmice nest in cavities in trees, so leaving up older snags is always appreciated (so long as they aren't a safety concern). Having a diet in insects and fruit, these little birds are great to have around as seed-dispersers, as well as pest management. And they're so damn cute, it's hard not to be happy to see a pair at the feeder.

This tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) was around yesterday. These birds rarely sit still long enough for a photo. You almost have to know where they will be before they get there. In this case I got lucky I was taking photos of dozens of small birds and one happened to be this bird.
"A little gray bird with an echoing voice, the Tufted Titmouse is common in eastern deciduous forests and a frequent visitor to feeders. The large black eyes, small, round bill, and brushy crest gives these birds a quiet but eager expression that matches the way they flit through canopies, hang from twig-ends, and drop in to bird feeders. When a titmouse finds a large seed, you’ll see it carry the prize to a perch and crack it with sharp whacks of its stout bill." - allaboutbirds.org

Animal of the Day!
Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Eastern United States
Size (Weight/Length)- 21 g; 17 cm
Diet- Insects; Seeds; Berries
Cool Facts- Tufted titmice, sometimes called tufties, are tiny songbirds with big vocal range. Forming small groups called banditires, tufted titmice will sit in branches above berry bushes. When the coast is clear from larger birds, they will descend into the bush, grab a berry, and fly back into the tree before eating. Despite their skittish nature, these tiny birds will happily take down a hornet’s nest in exchange for a few juicy larvae. When constructing their nests, female tufted titmice will use animal fur and snake skins to make it as soft as possible. Chicks stay with their mother throughout their first year of life, sometimes helping to rear the next generation.
Rating- 12/10 (Can easily tough out the snowiest weather.)
