Cremation is just another fun(erl) service
So blaming random 4am thoughts that have been plaguing me all day for this
----
Jason woke to a bright room, thin sheets and the smell of a hospital embedded in his body.
First as always, assess. Hospital. No affiliation printed on the walls or anywhere. Private room, but small. That door looked like it led to a private bathroom. Generic flower picture, a mounted screen turned off. Really fucking bright sunlight from the windows.
There was no fucking way he was in Gotham then. Everything was too nice. Normal by standards outside of Gotham. There were blinds, not metal shutters. The walls were cleaner than Gotham allowed outside of Downtown and he could see greenery through the window.
Okay. So what had he been doing? Jason remembered and then wished he had his Jerichos to shoot himself with. Mystic Shit™. Okay. Okay. That was not one of his better ideas, but if he's recovering in a hospital, it worked. World saved.
So recovery. How fucked was he?
His skin looked so fucked. Which meant he had been worse. He's had time to recover and lose muscle tone in, going by how twiggy his arms were. His hands looked good. Clearly someone knew he cared about those if they went through the effort of restoring those.
Hmm, that was odd. No matter how much Jason hated the Lazarus Pits and all its by-products, it would have been a faster and more simple way to recover from near-death than the long incarceration in a hospital for a John Doe.
Jason wasn't sure if he'd been abandoned yet again by those who called themselves his family because he could, "take care of himself," or if he had been written off dead. Again.
Hospital beat the coffin by a long shot.
And it was with that cheery thought, a nurse -obvious meta human nurse- came in and burst into excited Japanese, because that was of course, his luck.
It's after the nurse and doctors leave that Jason loses his shit.
It looks like he's sulking in bed, but mentally everything in his head is exploding. Imploding.
Three. Fucking. Years. Coma.
Burn victim so bad they not only expected him to die in the first couple of days, but still expect it because of the infection risk his fucked up skin represents.
Still the conversation with the medical staff -of varying degrees of bizarre- was enlightening.
No, he has no idea who he is. Did he ever get anyone visit? How did he get here?
Of course some amnesia is to be expected. No, some of the nurses visited. No one knows how he got here.
Does he know what his quirk is? Uh?
Trauma blocked amnesia, the doctor mutters.
What's the last date he remembered?
Saturday. Maybe? The last year? No, I'm pretty sure my memory is shit and I'm trying hard not to freak out over not knowing anything. So could I get the year number?
And then there's the fucking year number. Once he got it translated into more normal terms.
Mystic Shit™ said fuck you to the future.
Except Jason knows this is not his future. Again, if it was, this would have been treated as a fucking inconvenience. Effective skin restoration goop -the proper name escaped him- was easily available to those with the right connections. A normal baseline human with 2nd and 3rd degree burns would be fine in less than two weeks with it, with nary a trace to show for it.
Thanks to the three year coma, his muscles were all atrophied as fuck, despite their best attempts at physical therapy. Because of all the burns and later burn scars and infections making it basically impossible to actually do fuck all about maintaining muscle tone until he was basically burnt skin and bones anyway.
He was so fucking weak now. It wouldn't last forever. He'd escape this hospital before he was discharged, before whatever "benefactor" showed up for whatever "purpose," he was suppose to serve now, as they had the medical debt over his head or was threatening his loved ones or whatever. If one didn't show up in the next week, he was losing his genre-savviness, because shitheads always wanted to claim shit, if it looked useful.
And Jason was used to looking useful, until he was no longer useful and they just didn't care. The amnesia made him less shiny, but Jason couldn't pull off the brain dead zombie imitation without actually being a brain dead zombie crawling up out of his grave.
So under the thin hospital sheets, Jason twitched his muscles.
Two weeks of emotional freak outs, watching the news, physical therapy and drugs Jason had had enough.
And he broke out.
----
Yeah, he regretted it almost immediately. Hard not to in the stupid paper gown, barefoot and bare ass.
Thankfully people were people, even with the plethora of meta humans he had seen, so it actually wasn't hard to find clothes. Someone left a hoodie in their car and Jason broke into said car. Put on the hoodie. Hotwired the car and drove off.
Somehow for being in the fucking future by two centuries and change, cars really hadn't changed. More evidence of Mystic Shit™ slamming him sideways.
He drove to the next town over, picked another direction, drove some more. Parked the car near what looked like a chop shop, negotiated the car for some money. He probably got ripped off, but better than nothing.
He walked to a corner store, bought some flip-flops after bullshitting an excuse that his had broken. First aid stuff. You know, for his feet. Hair dye in three different colors, because Rose Wilson could pick out a bad dye job at a hundred meters and so Jason learned how to dye his own hair properly so as to avoid her mockery, only to get mockery (affectionate) anyway.
It was a mix of instinct and lifelong observation that let him find an empty apartment quickly. He stole some sweatpants and passed out on the bed.
----
The thing is, Jason doesn't regret his crimes like Bruce thinks he ought to do, with a massive pity party and flaming self-hatred and punching criminals instead of shooting them. He hates the necessity of doing crimes, even if that crime is a net gain to society, but that's why all his serious crimes are premeditated. He's homicidal, not a psychopath.
Not Pit-mad either, no matter what the rest of them might have thought.
Again, he's homicidal, not a psychopath. And when he doesn't have to be some sort of costume soldier to be discarded by family for the disgrace of disfiguring the memory of a dead boy? He's actually chill and boring.
That is to say, he crashed at that apartment for three days, felt progressively more like himself, especially after the dye job -white hair all over, now a solid and boring black- but it still didn't change all the other issues the Mystic Shit™ inflicted on him.
This body isn't actually his. Too young, scars not right where the burns didn't fuck him over. Thankfully his existing coping mechanisms for dysphoria work and it's shoved to the side.
It's also a shit body. Not even a month out of a three year coma with inadequate -by his standards- of medical care. It's weak and building muscle to do everyday civilian shit, is going to take months to do. Pushing as hard as he did during the escape wrecked him the next three days. Jason may not know what's going to happen, but with his luck, it's going to suck and training is preparing to make it suck less. The only certainty he's got is that his skin or lack thereof is going to kill him from infection if he doesn't fix it.
He's got no legal identity here. Which basically puts him back onto familiar ground of legally dead.
Beyond the lack of paperwork, he's got a lack of funds. He also has no easy target to steal funds and equipment from, even just for fun.
For more disadvantages, he's in a different country, with different laws and a whole different culture. He would be climbing on board a fucking plane to Gotham, if it existed in this world, for some familiar ground.
He really is the unluckiest Robin. It also means he is also the most prepared Robin.
---
The first six months after waking up in this mockery world of heroics were the absolute worst.
He started at one foot in the grave and crawled out of it before the casket could really eat him alive. Jason had experience in casket busting. He didn't wanna repeat it.
He still didn't know who he was -in who was he inhabiting- but it wasn't like Jason had a lot to go on. 'His' quirk was thermo-manipulation, most obviously in the blue fire he could call to his hands but he could do some ice too; it was thanks to Duke's light and shadow manipulation that he had even tried for the duality. He had white hair. Presumably Japanese heritage but quirks had really erased or blurred a lot of racial lines. Also presumed dead and young.
Access to the Quirk Registry took some doing, but again, not everyone followed basic computer security, much less what it took to keep someone bat-trained out of their systems. Again, for nearly two centuries in the future, a lot of the technological development had stagnated. Searching through the Quirk Registry hadn't yielded any result but none of his other methods had struck anything either. And he had looked at the recently dead and/or presumed dead. Sure, he had some leads that looked viable, but he wasn't going to follow those up yet.
He had fixed a few of his most pressing issues the past six months. His ignorance of the local area, the local and national politics and so on. This world supported and had an entire industry catering to making child soldiers and sell their image and reputation to make money and more child soldiers that called themselves Heroes.
His weak ass body no long cried doing daily tasks and only hated him after working out. Yes, Jason was pushing it but he was well aware of how months of preparation could mean shit in the face of seconds.
His infection risk was severely reduced after quick research bender let him make the most generic knock-off brand of the skin restoration goop in a shitty homemade lab. Did it fix his skin being patchwork fucked in places? Some. He wasn't going to get feeling back properly, but at least he looked more normal. Maybe with enough moisturizing he might look a little less Frankenstien's monster.
He also had a cash inflow. It wasn't great, but it supported his apartment. And the second set of papers. And the 2nd apartment.
Which meant in grand old tradition for Jason, time for him to bounce to the next apartment and come up with a new name.

Genuinely curious, what are your thoughts on Dancer and FCG cuz like, he Literally, not figuratively, tried to kill her and did kill all of her companions at the time. I can see being critical cuz she doesn't seem to treat them like sentient beings, but even in the canon... most of the automatons aren't. Just some of the really old ones from Aeor/other old cities, right? So? She got a whoops!sentient microwave, treated them like a microwave, they killed all her friends and almost her and she's supposed to....? Be good buds with them? Also I know it's said that she trauma dumped on FCG, but let's switch it from microwave to personal journal - how would YOU feel if your personal journal popped to life and attacked you for trauma dumping? IDK haha I guess Idk you opinions and I'm just responding to my projected assumptions of your opinion. REALLY I'd 100% sincerely would like to hear your thoughts. I was really bothered by FCG pushing to meet with Dancer. Like jeez just leave her alone, you're her literal sleep paralysis demon, read the room.
Hey! Thanks for the ask, I put this a little bit in the tags but I can elaborate more here. (Edit: elaborate A LOT MORE it seems)
So here goes, I don’t know if you meant it this way but the analogy of a journal or microwave is helpful here because that’s exactly how Dancer treated FCG - as a tool to be used. But they *aren’t*. FCG is a whole being with emotions and thoughts all of which are apparent and so clearly distinct from other automatons.
So tbh, I think the perspective of “whoops! Sentient bot” makes sense for like a month, max. Not years. After all, we have seen NPC after NPC recognize FCG is a sentient being almost immediately after meeting him. I find it VERY hard to believe that Dancer never realized it herself.
Additionally, we need to step out of the plot itself and look at FCG’s mechanics. We know that every time he heals, takes damage for someone else, etc. he takes stress points, and that once past a certain threshold his switch flips and he goes full Murderbot.
We also know that rest and recovery are what reduces FCG’s stress points. So that tells us that Dancer was using and using and using FCG and not letting him rest (enough? At all?) even though he needed it. Because again he’s a person not a tool.
Even when they met back up recently and FCG sobered her up she remarked how she missed him doing that for her. And while I don’t expect her to miss him, I do think it’s indicative of her interest in him never being about him as a person but only how he could serve her.
And if we want to criticize FCG for his lack of boundaries, inability to take no for an answer and pathological need to fix Dancer sure that’s fair. He needs to unlearn a lot of that and quick. But we then have to ask ourselves where did those traits come from? They didn’t come from nowhere.
FCG is mentally extremely YOUNG. Aside from the 6?-ish Months spent with Ashton all he remembers is his time with Dancer. So, if FCG has a pathological need to fix others, to help them, and feels worthless if he’s unable to do so - that comes from how Dancer treated and trained him.
That doesn’t just go away; ESPECIALLY not when FCG doesn’t even remember going postal and doesn’t see to have the (IMO) most clear and realistic view of his and Dancer’s relationship.
After all look how he interacts with the Changebringer. She’s his surrogate Mom/Dancer. He needs someone to tell him how to feel, think, and what’s Good and Bad because he doesn’t know how to do it for himself - because he wasn’t *taught* to.
But here’s my real question. What do we call one person keeping another person in service to them, with no compensation or personhood to be had, and with no intentions of releasing that person from that service? That’s slavery my dude. AT BEST indentured servitude.
(but that implies there’s a debt. What debt? Waking him up? He didn’t ask for that; that was her choice.
And again this sounds a lot like children being “indebted” to parents for giving them life, housing, feeding, etc. )
That’s the part I can’t get over. And that’s the part I can’t get behind where FCG is the abusive one. The power differential was NEVER in FCG’s court; he never once thought of himself as a person or as anything but in service of “Soul Touched”. That complete sacrifice of yourself and your needs (or an inability to even know you HAVE needs) comes from being in relationships where those things are expected/demanded.
So, yeah, he literally tried to kill her, and I gotta be real I’m not surprised. Even children of abusive parents who they love snap sometimes. Because again, that’s mentally what he was at the time. A child.
But even then, no I don’t think it’s unreasonable or unrealistic for Dancer to be traumatized or not want to see FCG again. I don’t even think she’s wrong to say “I can’t give you closure” because closure isn’t something other people give you.
But the way she’s been discussed to be largely clueless about his sentience, blameless in his blow up, and FCG’s victim? I just can’t get behind that. Like at all.

Fluffy February 2024 Master List
Very slightly delayed master list for @fluffyfebruary of 2024, with links to the original tumblr posts and their AO3 files.
Day 1: Snowbounding (Snow)
The average snowfall per year for southern New Jersey is around ten to fifteen inches. Getting twenty inches overnight leading to an unexpected snow day is bound to raise a few eyebrows.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 2: From The Door, Where We Began (Eavesdrop)
Sam had assured his guests that putting his son to bed wouldn't take long... but then Jimmy caught the sound of an old familiar favorite book being read, and Cas followed.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 3: Customer Disservice (Entertain)
Working in a faerie-owned and operated cafe definitely had some benefits, moreso than any other job Cas had previously had.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 4: Someone Who Will Always Know (Learn)
There once was a boy named John Constantine Novak. That boy no longer exists, as he became twins.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 5: Family Traditions, Part Two (Planet)
May was usually pretty busy for a cafe, but Sam always closed shop for Jack's birthday. This year, with two new employees under his domain banner, would be no exception.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 6: Won't You Please Respond (Fire)
Working the register at a cafe is somewhat outside of John Castiel Novak's comfort zone, but he and Jimmy have a debt to repay and it's his turn. The dragon volunteer firefighter who comes in is a welcome if oddly friendly surprise.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 7: You Don't Need A Nightingale (Recovery)
In the aftermath of the alicorn invasion, Sam is determined to get back to work as soon as possible despite his injury. This does not make his boyfriends feel better about him getting hurt in the first place.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 8: We Can Be Your Sword And Shield (Smile)
The aftermath of a traumatic event is often difficult for everyone involved. Routines can help... most of the time.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 9: What Is More Infinite Than The Universe (Storm)
Some businesses shut down when the weather turns bad. Others tend to get an uptick in activity. Some good... some not.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 10: Knit The Raveled Sleeve (Care)
Convalescence sometimes leads to picking up new hobbies. In fulfilling a recpriocal promise to his cousin, Sam picks up a hobby that leads to commissioning his cousin's help in making a very special gift for his boyfriends.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 11: Where Many Paths And Errands Meet (Quest)
John Castiel and James Constantine Novak were twins. This was not always the case, and this point of contention caused some resentment and ill-feeling on the part of their less supportive family members. When their least supportive uncle drunkenly suggested finding a faerie to turn them back into one boy so they'd only be half the disappointment, Cas and Jimmy decided that, for their own safety and continued survival, they needed to find a faerie first. This was easier said than done.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 12: Pull Me Like A Ripcord (Discipline)
Jack was usually such an energetic child that it was a bit disconcerting at first to see him be so still and controlled.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 13: Not New, But New To Us (Splurge)
A faerie bargain to ensure no one remembered that John Castiel and James Constantine Novak hadn't actually been born twins in exchange for a week of service. At the end of the week, they were presented with an offer of permanent employment and the chance to move into their own home far away from the family that barely counted as such. Now Cas and Jimmy just needed to sort out certain details of living on their own, like buying actual groceries and even furniture.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 14: You Labeled Me, I'll Label You (Free Space)
Just because Sam understands why Dean completely overreacted to his getting hurt in the alicorn attack, that doesn't mean his older brother will be forgiven until he actually apologizes to Cas and Jimmy. His mother and younger brother agree.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 14: Bonus Art (Free Space)
Tumblr | AO3
Day 15: A Bit Of A Fixer-Upper (Craft)
Charlie Bradbury was a fixer, the kind of person who stuck it out in bad situations with needy people and tried to make things better. It wasn't much surprise that she would end up working for a half-faerie cafe owner who was exactly the same.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 16: Family Traditions, Part One (Spontaneous)
Every year, Lighthouse CommodiTeas would close for the whole day of May 18th so that Sam could spend the entire day with Jack on his son's birthday. This year, Jack wants to invite Cas and Jimmy to join them.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 17: Untangling The Heart (Pleasure)
Routines took time to develop, whether by choice or by accident, but they always had one point where it began.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 18: The Best Medicine (Pain)
The property where Sam meant to establish Lighthouse CommodiTeas had come with a fully stocked kitchen. It hadn't mattered at the time since Sam couldn't make food to serve without risking cursing his human customers. So once he hired a full time baker, it mattered a bit more... as did the accidental hazards left behind.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 19: When In Need (Shadow)
Since the Magical Revelation, strange things tended to happen a lot more often and openly, and it was usually best to check with a magical before deciding if something was cause for alarm or just another Thursday. And then Jack came home from school with two shadows.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 20: In Sickness (Partners)
Living in a magically integrated community had its perks. Unfortunately, immunity from illness was not one of them. Luckily, Cas's half-faerie boyfriend is willing to come stay with him and Jimmy to help take care of him, which leads to a few unexpected revelations about Sam... like the fact that he technically has his own magical twin.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 21: One Size Fits, Some Exclusions Apply (Reward)
Thanks to the efforts of Nox and Sam, Matthew Pike has been rescued and relocated to Avalon and a new foster mom who has some concerns. Cas does his best to be reassuring.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 22: For Better Or Worse (Sacrifice)
The quest for immortality was supposed to be long and arduous, full of peril and challenge before one sacrificed their mortality to live forever. At least... that was what they'd been told.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 23: Until The Break Of Dawn (Dance)
Summer break in Avalon meant tourist season, and there was plenty to draw them in. Some things, however, were as much for the locals as the tourists, and Midsummer Night was one of them.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 24: History Never Repeats (Apology)
Ceridmael had perfectly valid reasons for going off on his brother's little human pets after they nearly got him killed in an alicorn attack. He may have been lacking all of the facts when he did, though.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 25: Under The Light Of A Thousand Stars (Kiss)
Deciding that they were definitely dating now was the easy part. Sorting out what that would look like with their respective boundaries, comfort levels, and cultural differences was an ongoing process.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 26: Luck And Marriage Are What You Make Of Them (Rain)
A V-shaped polyamorous wedding was bound to have some quirks and peculiarities to it. This is even more true when two of the three are magically created twins and their soon-to-be husband is a prince of one Realm and a king of another. They've got this, though-- not even rain can slow them down.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 27: When The Time Is Right (Protect)
Sam got hurt protecting Cas and Jimmy from alicorns. Alicorns are drawn to virgins. Dean blames Cas and Jimmy for Sam getting hurt. Therefore, Cas believes that to protect Sam from getting hurt because of them again, he and Jimmy need to no longer be virgins. Things do not go as planned.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 28: In Health (Shy)
Meeting your boyfriend's magical twin who shares his body can be a tricky situation, especially when that twin is king of a hell dimension. It goes better than expected, and gives Sam the confidence to share another secret with his lovers.
Tumblr | AO3
Day 29: Family Traditions, Part Three
Cas and Jimmy were surprised but honored to be invited along on Jack's birthday trip to the planetarium with his dad. As it turned out, there was a lot more planned for this trip than just daytime stargazing, an unexpected return of trust, and another sort of invitation.

Rilla is wary as she raps her knuckles off the door, but- hesitation isn't in her nature. Maybe this is a bad idea. Maybe, but she already made the decision, and second-guessing yourself is the sort of thing that'll get a knight killed. So. Not a habit she wants to entertain.
At least she doesn't have to wait all that long. He must not be all that busy, today.
The herbalist opens the door, his expression calm and businesslike, and then-
Damien smiles, when he sees her. Wide and earnest and delighted and completely knocking Rilla off her axis.
"Sir Rilla!" Damien says, his voice almost sing-song with cheer. "To what do I owe the pleasure? Oh- forgive me, but I do hope that you aren't here for quite the same reason as in our last meeting."
"No, I-" Rilla stumbles, resists the urge to reach behind herself to touch what's left of the bandaging, then barrels ahead anyway. "What do I owe you?"
Damien blinks.
"Owe... me?"
Rilla exhales through her teeth. "Owe you. For the stitches."
He opens his mouth, inhales as if he's about to say something, and then he sighs instead, leaning against the doorframe with a strange sort of smile.
"Why don't... why don't you come in, then. We can talk. I've been hoping you'd stop by and let me see how you're recovering, but-"
Rilla scowls as she steps past him, the familiar scent of medicinal herbs setting her teeth on edge. "I'm fine," she says, and when his expression only goes skeptical at that, his brows pinching together above the bridge of his nose, she waves a hand in the air. "Queen made sure the Citadel doctors looked me over too, don't worry. I haven't pulled the stitches out or gone and thrown myself at any new monstrosities in the last week."
"Hm." His smile tilts more earnest, and Rilla looks aside. "I'm quite glad to hear it. Marc and Talfryn haven't been by since last we met, and I- well, I wouldn't say that I worried, precisely, but- the thought did linger in my mind. Your recovery, your progress. I hoped all was well."
Rilla inhales, bites back a retort about how her progress is none of his business, and hisses the breath back out through her teeth.
"Yeah, well. They're busy, I'm busy, I'm sure you're busy, so if you just wanna- tell me what I owe you, and I'll get out of your hair."
Damien, who had turned to move a kettle closer to his hearth, glances over his shoulder.
"Yes, you said something rather like that outside. I remember telling you before, Sir Knight, that I do not take payment for my services."
"You did say that," Rilla says, trying to meet the herbalist's calm gaze as steadily as she can. "But- look. You still need to eat, buy supplies, protect yourself- what do I owe you? Just give me a number."
"You were injured, and I did my duty to myself and my Saint, and helped you towards recovery. I do not feel that you owe me anything, Sir Knight."
"Well, maybe I do, Damien," she snaps. "And I don't like feeling indebted to anyone, so just- tell me how to square this up and- just tell me what you want."
Damien... watches her, for a long moment, his pale brown eyes steady and searching as Rilla fights back the urge to fold her arms over her chest or pace or outwardly grimace. Something settles in his expression after a few moments, though, and his lips press into a thin sort of smile.
"Sit down, Sir Knight," he says, gesturing to his low table, the brown and blue cushions arranged around the wood, and then he turns and moves towards the hearth. "Have tea with me."
"I don't have time for-"
"Are you back on duty, already?" he asks over his shoulder as he pours a pair of cups, a keen look in his eyes all of the sudden, and Rilla wrinkles her nose. "Is the Crown quite so cavalier with the lives of its knights?"
"Nnnnnno, not-" she huffs a sigh. "No, I'm not- not allowed to- yet. But-"
"Then you should have plenty of time, I think. Sit."
She eyes him, feeling vaguely suspicious and then guilty for the suspicion, and then angry about the guilt. Damn it. "And then you'll tell me what I owe you?"
He sighs, but his lips curl into a smile and he turns, lowering himself to the cushions and then looking up at her with an amused sort of patience. She tries not to think, again, about the way his cheeks round when he smiles like that, about the way his voice reminds her of music.
She frowns, shuffles her feet, and-
She could just go, obviously. He says she doesn't owe him. That could be the end of it, her own feeling of imbalance be damned, she'll get over it sooner or later, and- it'd be a better use of her time to set off, anyway, and start tracking down Marc and Tal before they get themselves in over their heads without her. They'll complain, of course, but she doesn't care. Family, and all that. But. But.
She sits, hoping the motion looks deliberate with decision and not just with... well, pain, twinging up and down her back, and she keeps her frown steady.
"I don't even really like tea," she says, not thinking the words through until they're out of her mouth, and Damien's smile slips a little wider. "Kinda tastes like nothing, but- I don't exactly have a garden to keep a coffee plant in anymore, so. Whatever."
She reaches out and takes the cup, lifting it to her lips and blowing across the steam, mostly to stop herself from talking. All three Saints damn her in a fucking row, bringing that up here where everything smells too familiar and not familiar enough, thinking about that stupid little plant, thinking about-
"Hm," he says thoughtfully, wrapping his own narrow fingers around his cup. "I'll keep that in mind, Sir Knight."
She takes a too-big slug of the drink, swallowing quickly when she realizes that, yeah, obviously it's still almost too hot. Not burning, but not exactly comfortable, either.
"I think, perhaps, that we may have... gotten off on the wrong foot," Damien says, gently, his breath making the steam above his tea dance in the afternoon light streaming through his windows.
Rilla blinks, then snorts as she sets her cup back down in front of her. "How do you mean?" she asks, tilting her head and raising an eyebrow. "D'you mean the part where I fainted in your garden? The part where I think I probably tried to stab you when I woke up to my armor coming off?" She grins, the wide predatory one she knows tends to make people uncomfortable, but the herbalist doesn't quite balk like she expects. "The part where I pretty much insulted you and accused you of malpractice or charlatanry? Or just being a shitty patient in general?"
"I meant, Sir Rilla, the part where I failed to make you feel safe and cared for as my patient, I think," he says quietly, and then he shakes his head. "Clearly, I should have-"
"What?" Rilla pulls her head back, appalled. "No- seriously, what?" If getting up so fast wouldn't hurt like a bitch, she would've leapt to her feet, she feels like she should bolt, or at least pace a decent divot into the floor. What the fuck, though?
"Sir Rilla-"
"No," she says, gesturing and only barely missing a swipe that would have knocked her tea halfway across the room. "No, okay, this is exactly what I mean- you're right, we got off on a terrible foot, but that's because of me, because I was a fucking nightmare to you! I made things like five times more difficult than they needed to be, because I can't stand the thought of someone else seeing me lick my goddamn wounds and I would do the same thing again if I got hurt tomorrow, and you're over here acting like you did something wrong when I owe you for taking care of me at all, and I fucking hate it! What is wrong with you? Just- just let me pay you so I can- so I can-"
"Leave?" he suggests, quietly, and she presses her lips together tight. "So you can give me an excuse to stop caring about you? A-about what happens to you?" His cheeks darken suddenly, but he barrels ahead before she can really recover from that. "I do not want your money, Sir Rilla."
"Then what do you want?" She tries again, snarling through gritted teeth. "What the fuck do you want, Damien? What do you want from me?"
Damien looks- so fucking sad, for half a heartbeat, and then his face smooths over and he just looks... tired, really. And patient.
"I want you to sit and have tea with me," he says, and then he manages a weak little smile. "I'd like for you to come back, every once in a while. Pay me a visit with your brothers, perhaps."
"That can't be it," she insists, leaning forward. "Again. I was fucking miserable to you! Why the fuck would you not want to get a quick payday from the mess and just get me out of your life?"
That flash of sadness, again, and again he buries it in a calm sort of consideration.
"I... Sir Rilla, do you truly believe yourself to be so unlikeable?" He pauses as Rilla chokes, a strange shocked sort of laugh. "Or... or are you trying to convince me that you are? Convince yourself that you are?"
Her mind- whites out for a second, some incomprehensible tangled terror-rage-vertigo, and then she- to hell with the pain, she braces herself on the table and shoves herself back to stand, ignoring the way both of their cups slosh tea over their rims to stain the table and ignoring the way her back shrieks pain at her.
Damien inhales sharply, his eyes wide and- afraid, actually fucking afraid because Rilla is-
She spins for the door before he can- can look at her like that some more, maybe. Before he feels any more threatened.
"W-wait! Rilla, Rilla- wait, I'm sorr-"
"Thanks for the tea," she spits over her shoulder, not daring to look behind her, and then she-
What else? She leaves, slamming the door hard enough to rattle the frame behind her.

Retail Debt Collection: A Legal Perspective
Tumblr media
Retailers often face significant challenges with unpaid debts, which can impact their cash flow and overall business health. Understanding the legal aspects of debt collection can help businesses recover owed amounts more effectively and maintain financial stability. Understanding Retail Debt Collection Retail debt collection involves the process of pursuing payments from customers who have failed to pay for goods or services. Effective debt collection is crucial for maintaining a healthy cash flow and ensuring the sustainability of a retail business. The debt collection process typically begins with initial communication efforts, such as phone calls and reminder letters, followed by more formal actions if payment is not received. This can include hiring a collection agency or seeking legal action to recover the debt. Legal Strategies for Effective Debt Collection Pre-Litigation Measures Taking proactive steps before considering litigation can often resolve debt issues more efficiently. One of the most important pre-litigation measures is to ensure that your contracts have clear terms and conditions regarding payment expectations and consequences of non-payment. The following is a DRAMATIZATION AND IS NOT AN ACTUAL EVENT: For instance, a retailer named Sarah included specific clauses in her sales contracts that outlined late fees and interest charges on overdue payments. By sending detailed demand letters and negotiating payment plans, she was able to recover most of her outstanding debts without going to court. Litigation and Legal Proceedings If pre-litigation efforts fail, it may be necessary to escalate the matter to legal action. Understanding when to take this step is crucial. Litigation should be considered when the debt amount is substantial, and all other collection efforts have been exhausted. The litigation process for debt recovery involves filing a lawsuit against the debtor. If the court rules in favor of the creditor, a judgment is issued, which legally obligates the debtor to pay the outstanding amount. A debt collection attorney can help with the litigation process by using their legal knowledge to handle court procedures, represent the creditor, and ensure all rules are followed, making it more likely to recover the debt. Post-Judgment Enforcement Once a judgment is obtained, the next step is to enforce it. Several methods can be used to enforce a judgment, including wage garnishments, bank levies, and placing liens on the debtor’s property. The following is a DRAMATIZATION AND IS NOT AN ACTUAL EVENT: After winning a court judgment, retailer John successfully garnished the wages of a customer who had refused to pay for a large furniture order. This action ensured that John received the payment he was owed over time. Common Legal Challenges in Debt Collection Debtor Defenses and Counterclaims Debtors often use various defenses and counterclaims to avoid payment. Common defenses include disputing the amount owed, claiming that the goods or services were not delivered as agreed, or asserting that the debt is barred by the statute of limitations. It’s essential to be prepared for these defenses and have solid documentation to support your claims. Proper record-keeping and maintaining detailed transaction records can help counter these defenses effectively. Compliance with Debt Collection Laws Adhering to federal and state debt collection laws is critical. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) outlines specific rules that must be followed to avoid legal repercussions, such as harassment claims or fines. Non-compliance can lead to severe consequences, including lawsuits against your business. Ensuring that your collection practices are fair and lawful protects your business and maintains your reputation. Steps to Protect Your Business from Bad Debt Implementing Strong Credit Policies One of the best ways to protect your business from bad debt is to implement strong credit policies. This includes conducting thorough credit checks on new customers and setting clear credit limits based on their creditworthiness. Regularly reviewing and updating your credit policies ensures they remain effective. Setting up an efficient invoicing system with clear payment terms and reminders can also help reduce the incidence of unpaid debts. Working with a Debt Collection Attorney Partnering with a debt collection attorney can significantly enhance your ability to recover debts. An attorney can provide expert advice on the best strategies for debt recovery and represent your interests in court if necessary. The following is a DRAMATIZATION AND IS NOT AN ACTUAL EVENT: Retailer Alice hired a debt collection attorney after struggling with several unpaid invoices. The attorney helped her navigate the legal complexities, resulting in successful debt recovery and improved cash flow for her business. Choosing the right attorney involves considering their experience, success rate in debt recovery cases, and client reviews. An experienced attorney can provide the legal support you need to protect your business from financial losses. Conclusion Empowering yourself with knowledge about the legal aspects of debt collection is crucial for any retailer. Understanding the process, being aware of common challenges, and knowing how to implement effective strategies can make a significant difference in your ability to recover owed amounts and maintain financial stability. FAQs 1. What are the first steps in the debt collection process? The debt collection process usually starts with initial communication efforts, such as phone calls and reminder letters. If these efforts fail, more formal actions such as hiring a debt collection attorney may be necessary. 2. When should I consider litigation for debt recovery? Litigation should be considered when the debt amount is substantial and all other collection efforts have been exhausted. It is crucial to consult with a debt collection attorney to evaluate the best course of action. 3. What defenses might a debtor use to avoid payment? Common defenses include disputing the amount owed, claiming that the goods or services were not delivered as agreed, or asserting that the debt is barred by the statute of limitations. 4.
