Featured Post: Almost Destroyed by Lakisha Johnson
About Almost Destroyed:
Ava Gentry met Andre, thirteen years ago, when he was the officer who responded the night she was attacked. Years later, he's still treating her like that scared and broken girl with no self-esteem in need of saving. Every chance he gets, he tries to destroy her with his words and actions leaving her feeling unworthy of love and respect.
The sad reality was it wasn't the first time she's felt this way. From being abused by her grandfather to even worse foster homes; suffering has almost destroyed her identity and ability to love herself.
But she's had enough.
Finally standing up for herself, Andre throws her out, destroying her belongings while almost destroying her. On her own and starting over, she realizes the first thing she needs, besides a place to stay and a job is a relationship with God. Yet, things prove harder than she ever imagined, especially when trouble won't let go, and neither will Andre.
In Almost Destroyed, follow Ava's journey from heartache and brokenness to restoration and finding the strength to love herself again.

Book Cover Judgement
LaKisha and I met almost, if not, 10 years ago at a place we worked together. As I got to know her, I found that she was SO down-to-earth…OM&G?! I guess in my head she would be fake-friendly to me like most people were at that job, but she wasn’t at all. Our conversations were few, but always welcoming.
I am still honored to be a recipient of her insight, and for the conversations of a more personal topics that we shared at my desk (that she may have absolutely no remembrance of – HA). Even if she was sharing those same things with everybody else, all I knew was that she didn’t know me from a can of paint, and yet was sharing with me. That was pretty cool.
The first thing that I noticed was not just that she was tall (AND that she was wearing heels and her business slacks actually fell below her ankles), but that she’s such a pretty and strong young, Black woman. She was helping raise a house full of young Black boys, she was a degree holder, had decent job title, was about to become a college professor; was an entreprenuer, and the wife of this #CoolTallGuy name Germaine. She possessed this ability to stand up for herself that I greatly admired but hadn’t yet cultivated for my Self. It seemed like she was so secure in who she was, height and all…and that was just bomb to me! She was #WomanGoals, if you will.
Over time and from a far, I’ve witnessed the tremendous strength LaKisha possesses and the growth she’s attained since I first met her. She has a beautiful testimony! Her ability to face all that life brought to her, and still – with the help of her Higher power – manages to revive her purpose and existence is so dope to me. The girl is bomb. #frfr
#ThatPart
This quote?! My favorite quote to date! It’s a piece of a bigger point that LaKisha was making that, shamefully, I don’t remember; but this is unequivocally locked in my memory forever. Let’s just say it was a right-on-time affirmation.
From relationships and situation-ships; to friendships, family-ships, and yourself-ships; career-ships and education-ships; to credit score-ships, economic-ships, to life-ships...I got options! Not in a petty way or to say that I’ve figured any of these things out; but to realize I can figure out how I want to do my life...for me...with the options I do and don’t have...and create? You talkin’ ‘bout liberation?! Simple but it works.
There is at least one woman that unknowingly inspires every facet of my life. These 10 little words solidified LaKisha in that small host of women. For instance..
I love how #IyanlaVanZant can help you see yourself (or break you down) and nurture you into a standing-in-YOUR-truth-on-your-own-two-feet position simultaneously – I want that!
I love how #DorothyDonahue and #QueenStewart loved me, their granddaughter, despite their own inner anguishes because they saw the bigger picture – I want that!
I love how #EllenDeGeneres’ energy alone blesses people, not to mention the tangible ways in which she blesses people – I want that!
I love #DiannCromartie’s ability to stand – while never halting her love for me, her child – when her world said she should lay and stay down, face down – I want that!
I love #Oprah Winfrey’s womanhood, entrepreneurial mind, and wisdom – I want that!
I love how LaKisha M. Aldridge Johnson stands for the things she’s passionate about. She uses her testimonies to challenge inner fears, nudge boldness in muteness – even when it’s from within, and helps you see that you have options simply because of the uniqueness that is you. I applaud her love to Love and cultivate the triumphs of thousands of people – I want that!
She is definitely a #DopeTallGirl…#LetsArgue ;-)
LaKisha’s Height Journey
She shared a brief but familiar look into her #TallGirl experiences on FB the other day, and I just had to share it, because...well...I can relate! Her post said:
“I remember there USED to be a time I couldn’t embrace my size, 5”11 1/2 and size 11 shoe....it started back in elementary school, I was most likely taller than everyone else, including the boys. Kids would harass me and as I got older I used to get tired of people asking me how tall I was, or what was my shoe size? Jokes about my height...questions like, “Why do you wear high heels and you are so tall?”....Just random questions, thoughts or comments about things I had no control over.... as I grew in confidence and realized how uniquely and wonderfully made I was, I began to own it all....TOD (Thought of the Day) OWN IT!! You are fearfully and wonderfully made! Psalms 139:14” – FB: justbeinglmj // photo cred: Whitney B. Litzsey
.....and by the way, she doesn’t play basketball!
LaKisha’s encouragement goes beyond physical aesthetics, makeup, and fashion. It hits the root of who you are, and will become, by introducing/reacquainting you with your Higher power. I appreciate that she understands that if you’re not enriched from within first, you’re just painting over mildew - that you have to be cool with who you are even if when that’s all you are...#LoveYourself at every level.
