Calendrier Magique (1896): An Art Nouveau Calendar of Black Magic - For Siegfried Bing written by Austin de Croze and drawn by Manuel Orazi. The name February comes from the Latin Februarius, inspired by Februus, god of death and purification in Etruscan mythology. Februarius means "Month of Purification" in Latin, it appears to be a word of Sabine origin and the last month of the Roman calendar before 450 BC. related to the word "fever."

Desnudo de origen italiano, este pintor y grabador produjo en Francia a partir de 1884 un cierto número de notables carteles, contribuye al “Figaro ilustrado” en “Illustrated Review” entre otros y trabaja como ilustrador para las casas de F. Didot, P. Ollendorff, P. Lafitte, Fayard… A finales de el año 1895, Siegfried Bing publica para su galería Art Nouveau un extraño calendario previsto para el año 1896. Dibujado al número simbólico de 777 ejemplares, el Calendario Mágico se presenta en forma de texto de Austin de Croze para cada mes del año, acompañado de un Litografía de Manuel Orazi. Nuestra Bruja ilustra el mes de Octubre, dedicada a la práctica de la evocación a los muertos. El carácter satírico de el dibujo está subrayado por el autor. A pesar de los muchos signos esotéricos que salpican las páginas del calendario, el trabajo, lejos de ser un verdadero colección de ocultismo, más bien presenta prácticas satánicas en el modo humorístico. En la última página, el propio autor lo anuncia al lector:

«Ô toi qui feuilletas ces pages, ayant en ton âme l’espoir malsain de trouver le suprême pouvoir du Mal, sois déçu ! ». “¡Oh tú que hojeas estas páginas, teniendo en tu alma la enfermiza esperanza de encontrar el poder supremo del Mal, desengáñate! ".

Calendrier Magique by Austin De Croze & Manuel Orazi (1895)

Designed and published in Paris in 1895, the Calendrier Magique was conceived by Austin De Croze and illustrated by the Italian lithographer Manuel Orazi. While the history of these two individuals remains somewhat obscure, even a casual glance at the contents and illustrations of their unusual work shows that De Croze and Orazi possessed a sophisticated familiarity with the Esoteric traditions of the fin de siècle era. Every page of the Calendrier Magique evokes the decadent, occult Paris of Gerard Encausse, Oswald Wirth, and Karl Huysmans. The Art Nouveau illustrations of Orazi are especially evocative. Simon Finch writes that the work "was highly praised by Caillet as 'fort original et d'une rare exécution artistique'; he added that no contemporary artist - save Félicien Rops - had managed 'so felicitously to combine sadism, satanism and the macabre'.

Little appears in De Croze's other published works to betray a fascination with the esoteric, and he remains known today primarily as a writer of books on gourmet French cuisine. But Manuel Orazi supplies some tantalizing hints of leanings toward the occult in several of his other illustrations and paintings. Orazi illustrated books, created posters for plays and operas (including the 1896 Paris premiere of  Oscar Wilde's Salome), and even did set and costume design for the the infant film industry.  (He worked on the 1921 classic L'Atlantide, directed by Jacques Feyder and starring silent film siren Stacia Napierkowska.)

Something worth noting is the striking similarity of the letterform sigils and the doodle-like figures to the later, more seriously-intended occult art of Austin Spare. Neither Orazi nor the Calendrier Magique receives a mention in Phil Baker’s biography of Spare but a copy of the calendar could have made its way to a London book shop where Spare might have seen it. 

The Calendrier Magique was published in a limited print run of 777 copies.

It’s amazing what you can find in archives! I went to the Warburg Institute website in search of alchemical material and got distracted by this 19th-century ‘Calendrier magique,’ a Magical Calendar from 1869, edited by Austin de Croze (1866-1937). The images are long and thin. Take a look at the detail: an image of Baphomet with the Kabbalistic Sephira Hesed (Mercy) on the left and the Sephira Geburah (Strength) on the right (opposite of their usual positions); a trident sigil from Paraclesus, but via Eliphas Levi; a witches’ Sabbath dominating the picture, and a dramatic circle with bats, skull-and-cross-bones at the bottom.

The French lines by de Croze [and apparently dedicated to the poet Maurice Rollinat, known for his macabre and fantastic writing], speak of witches flying in storm winds, riding their staffs (not brooms) to see Satan, their bodies covered in magical ointment.
