Audi RS Q e-tron E2, 2022. A new version of Audi’s electric rally car set to compete in the 2022 Morocco Rally and the 2023 Dakar Rally. The body is completely new and features significantly enhanced aerodynamics. It helps lower the prototype’s weight and centre of gravity. Like the original RS Q e-tron, the electric drivetrain comprises an energy converter consisting of an internal combustion engine and a generator, as well as a high-voltage battery and two electric motors on the front and rear axles.

Este parece un clásico de todos los años, pero Carlos Sainz salió a decir que pensaba que los Audi tendrían una desventaja debido a que el peso mínimo de los prototipos T1 Ultimate (híbridos/eléctricos) se subió a 2.100 kilos y el de los T1+ se mantuvo en 2.000 kilos. Sainz señaló que eso significa que cuando terminen la etapa, al ajustar el peso de combustible llegarán con un auto mucho más pesado que las Toyota y los Prodrive Hunter. Y en el mismo clásico de todos los años, recibió la respuesta pública de Nasser Al-Attiyah diciendo que habla mucho.
“Saluden a Carlos de mi parte. Carlos siempre trata de quejarse de muchas cosas, pero creo que Audi, Toyota y BRX serán parecidos, quizás con un poco de diferencias eléctricas o de potencia” señaló el qatarí a un grupo de periodistas según reportado por Motorsport en una entrevista durante la jornada de Shakedown y verificaciones administrativas en el Sea Camp de Yanbu. 
El qatarí señaló que su propio auto también tiene desventajas con respecto a los Audi, especialmente porque los T1+ recibieron una reducción de potencia para esta temporada: “Toyota tiene el tema de las marchas, y en cada cambio pierdes un segundo. Pero es similar, y por eso es bueno tener la nueva generación eléctrica. El rendimiento de Audi es muy alto y hemos perdido 40 HP” indicó el cuatro veces campeón del Dakar. “La potencia no es como en el último Dakar, pero es para todos. Parece que todos tenemos lo mismo, pero ya veremos, creo que serán las habilidades del piloto y del copiloto las que importarán".
Como si fuera poco, el qatarí de Toyota Gazoo Racing concluyó su opinión diciendo que espera que Prodrive y no Audi sean sus principales rivales en este Dakar 2023: “Para mí, el mayor rival será Loeb, no Audi, porque Seb terminó segundo en 2022, ganó en Marruecos y Andalucía”. Loeb no ganó en Marruecos, sino que fue Guerlain Chicherit, pero este si lo hizo en un Prodrive Hunter.

The Audi RS Q e-tron E2¹ is the second evolution of the contender from the brand with the four rings for one of the greatest challenges that there is in international motorsport: the Dakar Rally. The original Audi RS Q e-tron¹ scored four stage wins during its debut at the Dakar Rally in 2022 and shortly thereafter won its first desert rally at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. Audi is the first car manufacturer to use an electric drivetrain in combination with an efficient energy converter² to compete for overall victory against conventionally powered competitors at the Dakar Rally. The innovative prototype presents itself significantly improved for the 2023 Dakar Rally and now bears the abbreviation E2 following its evolution during the second phase of the development program.

Because there are no charging opportunities in the desert, Audi has chosen an innovative charging concept: On board of the Audi RS Q e-tron E2¹, there is the highly efficient 2.0 liter four cylinder turbo TFSI engine from the DTM. It is part of an energy converter that charges the high-voltage battery while driving.
The drivetrain of the Audi RS Q e-tron E2¹ is electric. The front and rear axles are both fitted with a motor-generator unit (MGU) from the Audi e-tron FE07 Formula E car. Only minor modifications had to be made to use the MGU in the Dakar Rally.
A third MGU, of identical design, is part of the energy converter and serves to recharge the high-voltage battery while driving. In addition, energy is recuperated during braking. The battery weighs about 370 kilograms and has a capacity of around 52 kWh.

Retorno de Audi al Dakar en duda por ajustes del reglamento
Audi tuvo un desastroso Dakar 2023 en el que no pudo luchar por el triunfo luego de grandes accidentes de Carlos Sainz y Stephane Peterhansel y variados problemas mecánicos para Mattias Ekstrom. El revolucionario proyecto del prototipo híbrido Audi RS Q e-tron ha logrado emparejar a Toyota y Prodrive en algunas etapas, pero no ha resistido en competencia en ninguna de sus dos presentaciones dakarianas. Ahora, Audi no tiene claridad de que quiera continuar invirtiendo en esta plataforma luego de considerar que los reglamentos no los favorecen en el Equilibrio de Tecnología o Performance.
Este es un tema que ya fue polémico durante el mismo Dakar, cuando en plena carrera, FIA y ASO le reajustaron la potencia a Audi con 8 kW extra (10,7 HP) para la Etapa 5 luego de evaluar la telemetría de las primeras cuatro etapas. Esto motivó fuertes declaraciones de Nasser Al-Attiyah en redes sociales diciendo que estaban casi ensuciando la carrera y regalándola al rival. No duró mucho esto, ya que fue en la Etapa 6 donde tanto Sainz como Peterhansel quedaron fuera de carrera, en algo no relacionado con el balance de performance, pero que Audi aparentemente siente que fue por sus pilotos empujando más allá de las capacidades del auto por un injusto equilibrio tecnológico.
Actualmente, Audi se encuentra en conversaciones con FIA y ASO para lograr un reglamento más justo para los T1.U como el RS Q e-tron. En declaraciones con Marca, Rohl Michl de Audi Sport calificó las negociaciones como constructivas, pero a pesar de esto, Audi no tiene planificado participar en ninguna prueba del Mundial de Rally Raid FIA W2RC al que se habían inscrito, salvo por ahora el cierre en el Rally de Marruecos y no está asegurada su participación en el próximo Dakar.
Carlos Sainz ha señalado que si Audi está presente en el próximo Dakar estará con ellos, pero ya se ha abierto a correr para otro fabricante buscando su cuarta corona. Los otros pilotos del equipo han sido habilitados para correr para otras organizaciones esta temporada, con Mattias Ekstrom disputando el Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge en la clase T3 con South Racing y ahora Stephane Peterhansel anunciando una carrera en motos con una Yamaha Ténéré en la clase Experience en el Morocco Desert Challenge.

The 2023 Dakar Rally heads back to Saudi Arabia for its fourth edition on December 31, with the world's best off-road racers facing 5,000 racing kilometres spread over 14 special timed stages before the chequered flag finally falls at Dammam on January 15. Audi, Toyota and MINI will get challenged during the Red Bull Race.    Known as the pinnacle of Rally Raid, the Dakar Rally is a form of long-distance off-road racing that takes place over several days. The rally was born in 1977 after the French motorcycle racer Thierry Sabine got lost while driving his motorbike in the Libyan desert during the Abidjan-Nice Rally.     Start of the Dakar Rally After finding his way back to the civilised world, Sabine determined to design a race based on his former experience, starting from Europe, then Algiers and crossing the Agadeze before the rally finishes in Dakar. Dakar Rally was born.   The race has grown from destinations in Africa to South America. Now to Saudi Arabia, which may be on- or offroad a total distance of more than several thousand kilometres and requires precise navigation via a road book.    Dakar Rally will be the longest since the start, and participants must tackle 5,000 kilometres of notable routes and 14 stages. The trails have more dunes and potential pitfalls than ever before. The prologue starts tomorrow in Yanbu by the Red Sea and ends in Dammam on the Arabian Gulf on 15 January 2023.     The 2023 Dakar Rally Athletes   The team of champions at the Dakar Rally must endure the racing challenges, and fresh-faced talents must prepare to push themselves to the limit in a decor of the gruelling heat and sands of South Arabia.  Drivers in the T1 Car Class, Nasser Al-Attiyah and co-driver Mathieu Baumel (FRA), make their way in a Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+. The driver aims for a fourth Dakar title. Nasser said: "We're ready to defend our title. It would be incredible to win again."   Using the exact vehicle are the drivers (ZAF)/Dennis Murphy (ZAF), Giniel De Villiers and, Lucas Moraes (BRA)/Timo Gottschalk (DEU), who also will return to the rally. Sebastian Loeb (FRA) and co-driver Fabian Lurquin (BEL) push their BRX Prodrive Hunter after being runner-up to Al-Attiyah in 2022.     Of course, the Audi Team can't miss out during this critical Dakar Rally race. Three-time Dakar Winner Carlos Sainz and co-driver Lucas Cruz from Spain race in their Audi RS Q e-Tron E2. Monsieur Dakar, Stéphane Peterhansel (FRA) and co-driver Edouard Boulanger (FRA) will join in Audi's three-pronged assault with Mattias Ekström (SWE) and Emil Bergkvist (SWE). Quite the opposite is MINI driver Kuba Przygoński (POL) with co-driver Armand Monleon (ESP) on board.   On bikes during the competition are Dakar and FIM World Rally-Raid Championship bike champion Sam Sunderland (GBR), who will represent Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing as he targets a third Dakar victory. "The 2023 race is looking to be one of the toughest ever. I'm under no illusion of what that means.", according to Sam.   Another rider is the Australian Daniel Saunders. He scored fourth in 2021 with two-time Dakar winner Toby Price. The Australian said: "The terrain in Saudi Arabia makes the rally very fast.
