Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes Cast: Where Have You Seen Tom Bateman and Eve Hewson Before?

Netflix psychological thriller Behind Her Eyes, adapted from Sarah Pinborough’s hit novel of the same name, sets its cast an unenviably tough task (and not just because almost everyone’s having to do a regional accent). Through subtleties and shifts in their performances, Eve Hewson, Tom Bateman, Simona Brown and Robert Aramayo need to keep the audience invested while keeping us guessing. What is it we’re watching? Is this six-part series the tale of Adele and David’s brittle marriage and the secrets that bind them? Or the story of single-mother Louise (Simona Brown) getting in over her head with this glamorous new couple? Could it be something else entirely?

While you’re asking yourself those questions, you’ll likely be asking another: where have I seen that guy before? While we can’t help with the former and stay spoiler-free, we can answer that one…

Eve Hewson as Adele

Dublin-born actor Eve Hewson most recently played lead Anna Weatherall in BBC-Starz period fantasy The Luminaries, an adaptation of Eleanor Catton’s 2013 Booker Prize-winning novel set against the backdrop of the west coast New Zealand Gold Rush. Before that, her major TV role was opposite Clive Owen, playing Nurse Lucy Elkins in Steven Soderbergh’s Cinemax period drama The Knick set in an experimental hospital in 1900.

The 29-year-old has also appeared in several high-profile films, playing the Marian to Taron Egerton’s Robin in the 2018 Robin Hood. She’s starred alongside Ethan Hawke in Tesla, opposite Sean Penn in Paulo Sorrentino’s This Must Be The Place, and with Tom Hanks in Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies. Born Memphis Eve Sunny Day Hewson, she’s the daughter of Irish activist Ali Hewson and musician Paul Hewson aka U2’s Bono.

Tom Bateman as David

English actor Tom Bateman’s biggest film role so far is as the roguish but charming Bouc in Kenneth Branagh’s 2017 Murder on the Orient Express, a part he has returned to for Branagh’s second Agatha Christie feature adaptation Death on the Nile, due for release later this year. Bouc is a fond old “ami” of detective Hercule Poirot who works as the on-board director for his wealthy uncle’s train company. He starred opposite Liam Neeson in 2019 action-thriller Cold Pursuit and alongside Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer in 2017 comedy Snatched.

TV-wise, you may have seen him as the lead John Beecham in ITV romantic period drama Beecham House, or as Rawdon Crawley, the drinking and duelling husband of Becky Sharp in ITV’s period comedy adaptation Vanity Fair. Bateman also played sleazy tabloid journalist Danny Hillier in Sky Atlantic’s The Tunnel and Guiliano Medici opposite Tom Riley’s Leonardo in period fantasy Da Vinci’s Demons. For ITV, he played Robert Jekyll in short-lived family fantasy Jekyll & Hyde. Among several stage roles, he acted alongside David Tennant and Catherine Tate in a 2011 production of Much Ado About Nothing.

Simona Brown as Louise

Prior to Behind Her Eyes, 26-year-old English actor Simona Brown’s most prominent roles were as operative Rachel in 1970s-set BBC One spy thriller The Little Drummer Girl, alongside Florence Pugh, Michael Shannon and Alexander Skarsgard; and as the troubled Tess in Channel 4’s virtual-reality drama Kiss Me First. She also appeared in US 2016 psychological thriller series Guilt and opposite Fionn Whitehead in ITV paranormal thriller HIM. Brown had a role in the 2016 remake of acclaimed slave drama Roots, and played the Grace in hit UK thriller The Night Manager – another John Le Carré adaptation for BBC One.

In 2015, Brown played schoolgirl Gaia in BBC One’s adaptation of JK Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy, and starred opposite Georgina Campbell in acclaimed BBC Three drama Murdered by my Boyfriend. Credited as Chontelle Brown, she also appeared in a two-part story on Russell T Davies’ CBBC sci-fi fantasy Wizards Vs Aliens.

Robert Aramayo as Rob

Yorkshire-born 28-year-old actor Robert Aramayo will be most recognisable to Game of Thrones fans as the young Ned Stark in the HBO show’s seasons six and seven flashbacks. He played the younger version of Sean Bean’s character in the Tower of Joy scenes that held the clue to the real identity of bastard Jon Snow. He memorably played serial killer Elmer Wayne Henley Jr in the second season of Netflix’s Mindhunter, and Texan character Turk in Rob Ford’s violent thriller feature film Nocturnal Animals.

Aramayo is also linked to another high-profile fantasy TV show, having been cast as the lead in Amazon’s pricy new The Lord of the Rings TV series, replacing Will Poulter who’d left the production due to scheduling conflicts. Another big role for Aramayo sees him co-starring with Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Gemma Arterton and more in Matthew Vaughan’s 2021 feature prequel The King’s Man.

Tyler Howitt as Adam

You may recognise Louise’s seven-year-old son Adam, played by Tyler Howitt, from the first season of BBC-HBO fantasy His Dark Materials. Howitt played Billy Costa, a young Gyptian boy kidnapped by ‘The Gobblers’ and taken to a remote research facility in the far north, where he was cruelly experimented on.

Georgie Glen as Sue

Glen plays Sue, who works with Louise and David as a psychiatrist’s receptionist and secretary. With screen credits going back to the 1980s, the Scottish actor has had too many roles to list here. Most recently, you’ll have seen her as GP surgery receptionist Miss Higgins on BBC One’s Call The Midwife, and as Lady Fermoy in season four of The Crown. She’s also lately appeared in Hetty Feather, Damned, Sally4Ever and The Victim.

Eva Birthistle as Marianne

Though uncredited on IMDb at the time of writing, Irish actor Eva Birthistle plays Brighton café owner Marianne in Behind Her Eyes. She’s already had a long and varied career on screen, with stand-out roles as nun-turned-warrior-turned-Abbess Hild on Netflix’s action period adaptation The Last Kingdom, and even more recently as Vanessa on Netflix’s Fate: The Winx Saga young adult fantasy series.

Aston McAuley as Anthony

McAuley plays addict and psychiatric patient Anthony Hawkins in Behind Her Eyes, and has previously appeared in ITV crime drama Endeavour, 2019 Elton John biopic Rocketman, Armando Iannucci’s The Personal History of David Copperfield and BBC Three polyamory relationship drama Trigonometry.

Transfer deadline day 2018: Scottish clubs ready for summer window closure

Celtic striker Moussa Dembele is a target for Lyon

With English football having made a Brexit-style withdrawal from the united European transfer deadline, Scottish clubs have a chance to hog the UK headlines before the window shuts on Friday.

Managers have until midnight to reshape their squads – three weeks longer than their Premier League and Football League counterparts, who closed for business before their season started.

Despite that, Scottish clubs can still sign talent from England and further afield, albeit those continental clubs can also still attempt to lure players from these shores.

But as time begins to run out, BBC Scotland looks at the moves that might happen and those that already have, and gives you the chance to test your transfer window knowledge.

What moves are we expecting?

Rangers do not want to wave goodbye to striker Alfredo Morelos

Celtic tend to be busy in the final hours of the window and are expecting to finalise a loan move for Leicester City defender Filip Benkovic and a permanent deal for former Kilmarnock midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu.

Boss Brendan Rodgers is confident of retaining striker Moussa Dembele after Celtic rejected a “significant” bid for the French Under-21 international.

There is also reportedly a French fancy for Alfredo Morelos and Rangers might be faced with their own dilemma over the Scottish Premiership’s top scorer should links with Bordeaux prove founded. In terms of incomings, Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard is looking to add a winger, with Osijek’s Eros Grezeda having a medical.

Gareth McAuley, the 38-year-old Northern Ireland centre-back released by West Bromwich Albion, has been linked with Rangers, but Aberdeen or Hearts might be more likely destinations.

A ball-playing centre-half is a priority for Hibernian head coach Neil Lennon, who would also like to add another striker. But midfielder Danny Swanson could depart for either Dundee or St Johnstone, who are also interested in Hearts’ Ross Callachan.

In addition to a central midfielder, Dundee manager Neil McCann is after a centre-half and a striker. Could a move for Ayr United’s Lawrence Shankland still be a possibility? After all, his budget may be boosted with striker Craig Wighton completing his move to Hearts.

Hearts could also make a fresh attempt to secure the early arrival of David Vanecek, the Teplice striker who has signed a pre-contract agreement to move in January.

And midfielder Ryan Edwards could be allowed to leave Tynecastle to join St Mirren on loan despite having only arrived from Partick Thistle this summer.

Striker Robbie Muirhead has been training with Kilmarnock and could return to Rugby Park on loan from MK Dons, while Motherwell are in the market for a winger.

Any Livingston additions will be on loan, while Hamilton Academical want three more players and could surprise again with the obscurity of their new arrivals from around the world.

And what of Celtic midfielders Ryan Christie, who was with Aberdeen last season, and Scott Allan, who was at Hibs? Will they head out on loan again with Rodgers saying this week that his squad is too big.

What effect has the English window closing early had?

English clubs were not going to let players go until the English window was closed in case they were left short. But, since then, Scottish clubs have been able to go and ask for loan players.

We’ve seen it in the past few days – Hearts have got Jimmy Dunne from Burnley and Demetri Mitchell from Manchester United, Kilmarnock have got Greg Stewart from Birmingham, and St Johnstone have got Tristan Nydam from Ipswich – and there will be more in the next couple of days.

It also means that, instead of panicking on the final day and taking someone you don’t really know, you have three weeks to do your work to make sure you get the players that you want.

What’s going on at Celtic & Rangers?

To say this has been a tricky transfer window for Celtic would be an understatement. It started with Brendan Rodgers saying he expected to strengthen by adding three of four new faces and will finish with the club scrambling to give him his wish.

The club lost out on long-term target John McGinn; Dedryck Boyata opted not to play in Athens as his side missed out on the Champions League qualifying; and throw in the possibility Dembele leaving and you have the perfect storm of summer transfer mayhem.

Gerrard would probably have been happy just to bring in one more central defender, but Jamie Murphy’s season-ending injury has prompted the deal to sign Grezda.

That will bring the total of inbound players at Ibrox to 13 but, if Gerrard gets his way, a centre-back could still arrived, with Nottingham Forest’s Joe Worrall and Mark Beevers of Bolton Wanderers both reported to be potential targets.

What deals have been done?

Celtic have provided the most expensive export out of the Premiership, with Scotland midfielder Stuart Armstrong joining Southampton for £7m.

However, they paid a couple of million more to make Odsonne Edouard their record signing after the French striker’s successful loan spell from Paris St-Germain last term.

Across the city at Rangers, significant fees have been paid for five of their 12 summer signings.

Connor Goldson and Jamie Murphy – who was on loan at Ibrox last season – were acquired from Brighton & Hove Albion, Kyle Lafferty was brought back from Hearts, and Borna Barisic arrived after impressing for Osijek against Rangers in Europa League qualifying.

Hibs provided the other big-money export to England, with McGinn being sold to Aston Villa for a reported £2.75m. Dylan McGeouch also left for Sunderland on a free transfer.

But the Easter Road club recruited Stevie Mallan from Barnsley and Daryl Horgan from Preston North End, while striker Florian Kamberi’s switch from Grasshopper Zurich was made permanent. Jamie Maclaren also returned on loan from Darmstadt.

The lure of the cash-rich English game took striker Adam Rooney from Aberdeen to Salford City in the National League. But the Pittodrie side themselves raided Hamilton for midfielder Lewis Ferguson.

Transfer deadline day 2018: Scottish clubs ready for summer window closure

With English football having made a Brexit-style withdrawal from the united European transfer deadline, Scottish clubs have a chance to hog the UK headlines before the window shuts on Friday.

Managers have until midnight to reshape their squads – three weeks longer than their Premier League and Football League counterparts, who closed for business before their season started.

Despite that, Scottish clubs can still sign talent from England and further afield, albeit those continental clubs can also still attempt to lure players from these shores.

But, as time begins to run out, BBC Scotland looks at the moves that might happen, those which already have, and gives you the chance to test your transfer window knowledge.

What moves are we expecting?

Celtic tend to be busy in the final hours of the window and may have to replace striker Moussa Dembele should interest from Lyon, or perhaps French rivals Marseille, materialise into an offer. A central defender and central midfielder might also be on Brendan Rodgers’ list.

Gareth McAuley, the 38-year-old Northern Ireland centre-back released by West Bromwich Albion, has been linked with Rangers, but Aberdeen or Hearts might be more likely destinations, with Derek McInnes also looking to bring a left-back to Pittodrie.

In addition to a central midfielder, Dundee manager Neil McCann is after a centre-half and a striker. Could a move for Ayr United’s Lawrence Shankland still be a possibility? After all, his budget will be boosted should striker Craig Wighton’s sale to Hearts be completed.

Hearts could also make a fresh attempt to secure the early arrival of David Vanecek, the Teplice striker who has signed a pre-contract agreement to move in January.

And midfielder Ryan Edwards could be allowed to leave Tynecastle to join St Mirren on loan despite having only arrived from Partick Thistle this summer.

Striker Robbie Muirhead has been training with Kilmarnock and could return to Rugby Park on loan from MK Dons, while Motherwell are in the market for a winger.

Any Livingston additions will be on loan, while Hamilton Academical want three more players and could surprise again with the obscurity of their new arrivals from around the world.

And what of Celtic midfielders Ryan Christie, who was with Aberdeen last season, and Scott Allan, who was at Hibs? Will they head out on loan again with manager Brendan Rodgers saying this week that his squad is too big.

What effect has the English window closing early had?

English clubs were not going to let players go until the English window was closed in case they were left short. But, since then, Scottish clubs have been able to go and ask for loan players.

We’ve seen it in the last few days – Hearts have got Jimmy Dunne from Burnley and Demetri Mitchell from Manchester United, Kilmarnock have got Greg Stewart from Birmingham, and St Johnstone have got Tristan Nydam from Ipswich – and there will be more in the last couple of days.

It also means that, instead of panicking on the final day and taking someone you don’t really know, you have three weeks to do your work to make sure you get the players that you want.

What deals have been done?

Celtic have provided the most expensive export out of the Premiership, with Scotland midfielder Stuart Armstrong joining Southampton for £7m.

However, they paid a couple of million more to make Odsonne Edouard their record signing after the French striker’s successful loan spell from Paris St-Germain last term.

Across the city at Rangers, significant fees have been paid for five of their 12 summer signings.

Hibs provided the other big-money export to England, with John McGinn being sold to Aston Villa for a reported £2.75m. Dylan McGeouch also left for Sunderland on a free transfer.

The lure of the cash-rich English game took striker Adam Rooney from Aberdeen to Salford City in the National League. But the Pittodrie side themselves raided Hamilton for midfielder Lewis Ferguson.
