An incomplete list of Trans and gender nonconforming people murdered for existing in the 2020s
Here is the complete list of Trans people murdered in 2023, compiled by Transrespect versus Transphobia Worldwide (TvT).
2020 – Özge Bilir, aged 25, was a Dutch trans woman of Turkish descent living in Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht. She was stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend.
2020 – Alexa Luciano Ruiz was fatally shot in Puerto Rico on 24 February, after an incident in a local restroom. Ms. Luciano was killed while the assailant men laughed.
2020 – Michelle Michellyn Ramos Vargas, a 33-year-old trans woman, was found dead on an isolated road after being shot multiple times on 30 September in San Germán, Puerto Rico. She worked as a bartender and was studying to become a nurse.
2020 – Selena Reyes-Hernandez, 37, was fatally shot in Chicago, Illinois, on 31 May by a man she went home with, after telling him that she was transgender.
2020 – Brayla Stone, 17, was murdered in Arkansas in June 2020 by a man seeking to conceal his sexual relationship with her. The killer pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
2020 – Valera, a 46-year-old man, a janitor, was raped and killed on 10 February in Chelyabinsk, Russia, by his dorm roommates after they learned he was a transgender man.
2021 – Ebeng Mayor, a trans man from Batasan Hills, Philippines, was found raped, mutilated, and killed on 20 May 2021, after being missing for three days.
2022 – Briza Garces Florez, a 40-year-old Colombian trans sex worker from the Netherlands, was stabbed to death by her 32-year-old boyfriend.
2022 – Doski Azad, a 23-year-old Kurdish transgender woman, was murdered by her brother for being transgender.
2022 – Ariyanna Mitchell, a 17-year-old Black trans girl from Virginia, was shot and killed by 19-year-old Jimmy LeShawn Williams with an assault rifle, after he asked her if she was transgender, and she replied, "yes".
2022 - Cherry Bush, a homeless 48-year-old trans woman, was shot to death in Los Angeles.
2023 - Brianna Ghey was stabbed to death in Culcheth Linear Park on 11 February 2023.
2024 - Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old non-binary American student died one day after being assaulted in the girls' restroom.
Tumblr media
(This is Nex)
Their friends and mother say that they experienced bullying for more than a year, because of their gender identity, before the assault. The bullying got progressively worse after a bill was passed in Oklahoma to prohibit the use of non-binary gender markers on birth certificates. Public school students are legally required to use restrooms only according to the gender on their birth certificate.
Nex was assaulted in the restroom by three girls and beaten unconscious. Sue Benedict, Nex's mother, was called to school and she found Nex with bruises on their face and scratches on the back of their head. She was informed that they had been suspended for two weeks. Sue took them to a nearby hospital and called the Oklahoma police department.
Nex told the officer how they had heard the girls making comments about their group and how they had poured water on the girls which then led to the altercation. They then said that had been attacked and had blacked out on the floor. The officer told Sue that this could be considered "mutual" and if they were to press charges, Nex would be open to those same charges. She declined at the time. Nex were later discharged and reportedly went to bed with a sore head.

(Nex with their cat)
The following day, on February 8, as they were preparing to travel with their mother for an appointment, Nex collapsed in the family's living room. Sue Benedict called 911, saying that Nex’s eyes had rolled back and they were struggling to breathe. Nex had stopped breathing by the time EMTs arrived. Nex was declared dead at the hospital that evening.
This is, by no means, a complete list. It does not even include a fraction of the murders of gender queer people in the 2020s, let alone the suicides, rapes, assaults, attempted murders, etc. It does not include the crimes against the rest of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Thank you for reading the whole thing.

“Brianna Ghey had family support, friends, and a popular TikTok account. These support systems are crucial but even they can’t withstand the cruel, public attacks on trans livelihood. These “debates” over our humanity have deadly consequences.
Brianna rightfully holds significant media attention during this troubled time. But she was not the only trans teen killed recently. Just in the U.S., Ariyanna Mitchell, Katie Newhouse, and trans siblings Jeffrey "JJ" Bright and Jasmine Cannady - all trans youth of color - lost their lives to violence. Every one of their names should be remembered in the fight to end trans dehumanization.” Via @elierlick3

"They would kill you for being queer in Palestine" or "you can't be queer and support Palestine, they wouldn't like you over there"
Nex Benedict wasn't in Palestine.
Brianna Ghey wasn't in Palestine.
Sonia Rescalvo Zafra wasn't in Palestine.
Nireah Johnson wasn't in Palestine.
Ariyanna Mitchell wasn't in Palestine.
Amanda Milan wasn't in Palestine.
Shelby Tracy Tom wasn't in Palestine.
Janice Robets wasn't in Palestine.
*Damilola Taylor wasn't in Palestine.
Barry Rathbone wasn't in Palestine.
Steven Simpson wasn't in Palestine.
Melania Geymonat and Christine Hannigan weren't in Palestine.
These are just a SMALL handful of people (alive and dead) who were the victims of queerphobic violence. And they were NOT in Palestine. And yet, if anyone said we need to bomb these places for stuff like this, they would be regarded as extremists because that's NOT how you help people.
Using the violence that queer people face as a "get out of jail free" card for genocide is evil as hell and it's not something that people who claim to care about queer people should be engaging in.
Especially considering the queer people who live in Palestine. You're not helping them by murdering their family and friends and the home that they love while spitting on their culture and history.
You don't help people by committing genocides.
(Should be noted that Damilola Taylor never claimed to be gay because he was 10 and he didn't even know what being gay was but his bullies/murderers often hurled homophobic slurs at him while they harassed him regardless. He was a victim of homophobic violence without even knowing if he himself was actually gay or not. He was just a sensitive boy and that made him a target for hate.)
If you think Palestine deserves bombs and violence for queerphobia then so does Israel and the governments that support it. It's a dangerous and fucking ridiculous line of logic all in the name of trying to justify a genocide and convince people they should look away.
Killing Palestinians will do NOTHING for me or my rights as a queer person. Especially one that lives in the UNITED STATES of all places.

On the eighth of this February, 2024, Nex Benedict, a 16 year old non-binary student from Oklahoma passed away in hospital, a day after being beaten severely in a school restroom by a group of their bullies, and sustaining significant physical trauma to the head. This comes eerily close to the anniversary of the horrific murder of Brianna Ghey, who was the same age as Benedict at the time of her passing. The investigation of Benedict's death is still ongoing, but the facts are clear; our children are not safe, anywhere in the world. This is not just two instances of coincidental circumstance, this is a pattern of violence, transgender adolescents are targets of violence. So remember their names, say them out loud, spend a minute in silence for each and never let the world hear the end of it until the list stops getting longer.
Gwen Araujo
Nireah Johnson
Mercedes Williamson
Nikki Kuhnhausen
Brayla Stone
Ariyanna Mitchell
Brianna Ghey
Nex Benedict
And many, many more, who were not granted the dignity of coverage on their martyrdom.
Those whom the gods love die young.

i don’t really have much to say rn. this whole thing with Brianna but also the blatant erasure of the murders of trans poc is messing with me rn. I don’t really have words all I can say is I love you all deeply and if you need to talk or need validation or anything, please know you can come to me. I understand if you’re not comfortable doing that but I want everyone to know I’m here. rest in peace to Brianna, and rest in power to MJ Jackson, Destiny Howard, Tiffany Banks, Diamond Jackson-McDonald, Semaj Billingslea, Mya Allen, Dede Ricks, Hayden Davis, Kandii Reed, Martasia Richmond, Keshia Geter, Kitty Monroe, Shawmaynè Marie, Chanelika Y’Ella Hemingway, Brazil Johnson, Nedra Morris, Ariyanna Mitchell, Miia Parker, Kenyatta Webster, Tatianna Labelle, Naomi Skinner, Duval Princess, and Amariey Lej.

i'm getting sick of people saying things like "these anarchists using a death of a teen to push their violent fantasies to everyone should stop" let's stop acting like this is the first trans teen to be murdered as a hate crime I haven't seen any news outlets cover the murders of Ariyanna Mitchell, Katie Newhouse, Jeffrey Bright & Jasmine Cannady (22 yrs old). All trans teens who were killed by their fucking parents all in the past 2 years. We aren't pushing violent fantasies we are fucking fed up with having every aspect of our lives politicized, fed up with not being able to openly express ourselves in fears of being fucking murdered. There is a legitimate queer genocide looming and they expect us to sit here and do peaceful protests? conservatives aren't peaceful protesting . WE ARE BEING HUNTED. Conservatives are carrying weapons. It's time we do the same guns & tasers & knives whatever you can get in your current living situation get it, protect yourself all we have is us, we have to protect ourselves. The only step from here is revenge...

"The Q Stands For Queer, Not Quiet"
Our (my mother and I) tree for the ArtisTREES art show this year is a dedication to the transgender community, both to the 35 transgender Americans that have been senselessly taken from us this year alone and to the transgender Americans that are still fighting for their rights to this day.
Each white bulb lists the name and age of a transgender person who was killed by transphobia in the year 2022. The pyramid tree-topper is an homage to the HIV/AIDS campaign by ACTUP in the 1980s, when the Reagan administration failed to respond quickly enough to the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States.
These are the names of those we've lost in 2022:

Nex Benedict, was a 16 year old 2 Spirit non-binary child of Chahta (Choctaw) heritage living in Owasso, Oklahoma. They admired nature and had a devoted love of cats, especially their cat, Zeus. They were a student and an avid rock music listener. They loved The Walking Dead and video games like Ark and Minecraft. They were a gifted artist who enjoyed drawing, reading, and conjuring up their own cooking recipes. They were warm, kind, and "always searched for the best in people". They were all of these things and more. They were going some place, they were so free.Nex had a light in them that was so big, they had so many dreams. I want their light to keep shining for everyone. That light was so big and bright and beautiful, and want everyone to remember Nex that way"- Ms. Benedict (The Independent) Today, I think about Nex Benedict as have thought about Ariyanna Mitchell, Brianna Ghey, F.C. Martinez, and so many of the other 2spirit, Trans, and gender non-conforming children stolen by violence.

The murder of trans people has served as an impetus to the establishment of the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR).[1][2]
In 2019, the American Medical Association called the violence against trans people an "epidemic".[3][4][5]
In 2020, ABC News "independently confirmed 34 violent deaths of transgender and gender non-conforming people in 2020 at the time of publication." This was published by Good Morning America.[6] According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 57 transgender and gender non-conforming people were killed in 2021, surpassing the total from 2020 of 44 people.[7]
2022 - Cherry Bush, a homeless 48-year-old trans woman, was shot to death in Los Angeles. Her alleged killer has been charged with a hate crime.[95]
2023 - Brianna Ghey was stabbed to death in Culcheth Linear Park on 11 February 2023. Transphobia was recognised as a secondary motive for the killing by one of the two killers
2020 – Alexa Luciano Ruiz was fatally shot in Puerto Rico on 24 February, after an incident in a local restroom.[84][85] Carmen Yulín Cruz called attention to her death before the 2020 Puerto Rico gubernatorial election. Ms. Luciano was killed while the assailant men laughed.[86]
2020 – Selena Reyes-Hernandez, 37, was fatally shot in Chicago, Illinois, on 31 May by a man she went home with, after telling him that she was transgender.[87]
2020 – Brayla Stone, 17, was murdered in Arkansas in June 2020 by a man seeking to conceal his sexual relationship with her. The killer pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.[88]
2020 – Valera (name is changed in the report), a 46-year-old man, a janitor, was killed on 10 February in Chelyabinsk, Russia, by his dorm roommates after they learned he was a transgender man.[89]
2021 – Ebeng Mayor, a trans man from Batasan Hills, Philippines, was found raped, mutilated, and killed on 20 May 2021, after being missing for three days.[90]
2022 – Briza Garces Florez, a 40-year-old Colombian trans sex worker from the Netherlands, was stabbed to death by her 32-year-old boyfriend of Greek descent in a hotel in Wassenaar.[91][92]
2022 – Doski Azad, a 23-year-old Kurdish transgender woman, was murdered by her brother for being transgender.[93]
2022 – Ariyanna Mitchell, a 17-year-old Black trans girl from Virginia, was shot and killed by 19-year-old Jimmy LeShawn Williams with an assault rifle, after he asked her if she was transgender, and she replied, "yes".[94]
