The Philosophy of the Cat
The philosophy of the cat is a playful and contemplative exploration of feline behavior, cognition, and their role in human life and culture. While cats do not engage in philosophical inquiry in the same way humans do, their enigmatic nature and unique characteristics have inspired philosophical reflections on various aspects of existence. Here are some key themes and perspectives within the philosophy of the cat:
Independence and Autonomy: Cats are often celebrated for their independence and self-sufficiency. Philosophical discussions on cat behavior may delve into the nature of autonomy and the balance between freedom and interdependence in human-animal relationships.
Hedonism and Enjoyment of Life: Cats are known for their love of leisure, play, and relaxation. Philosophical interpretations of cat behavior may emphasize the pursuit of pleasure, the importance of enjoying the present moment, and the value of simplicity and contentment.
Intuition and Instinct: Cats exhibit keen senses, intuition, and instincts that guide their actions and interactions with the world. Philosophical reflections on feline cognition may explore the nature of intuition, animal consciousness, and the limits of human understanding.
Mystery and Elusiveness: Cats possess an aura of mystery and unpredictability that has captivated human imagination for centuries. Philosophical musings on the enigmatic nature of cats may touch upon themes of uncertainty, ambiguity, and the unknowable aspects of existence.
Aesthetic Appreciation: Cats are admired for their grace, elegance, and beauty. Philosophical discussions on the philosophy of aesthetics may contemplate the aesthetic value of cats, the perception of beauty in nature, and the role of aesthetics in shaping human perceptions of the world.
Symbolism and Cultural Significance: Cats have held symbolic significance in various cultures and mythologies throughout history. Philosophical inquiries into the symbolism of cats may explore themes of mysticism, spirituality, and the symbolic meanings attributed to animals in human culture.
Coexistence and Interconnectedness: Cats share a symbiotic relationship with humans, often serving as companions, protectors, or sources of comfort. Philosophical reflections on the human-cat bond may touch upon themes of coexistence, interspecies communication, and the ethical responsibilities of pet ownership.
Adaptability and Resilience: Cats are highly adaptable creatures capable of thriving in diverse environments. Philosophical discussions on cat resilience may examine the concept of resilience, coping mechanisms in the face of adversity, and the capacity for growth and transformation.
In summary, the philosophy of the cat offers a lighthearted and contemplative exploration of the multifaceted nature of feline existence. While cats may not engage in philosophical inquiry in the traditional sense, their presence and behavior inspire reflections on autonomy, enjoyment of life, intuition, mystery, aesthetics, symbolism, coexistence, resilience, and more.

Exploring the Vast Mosaic of Life’s PerspectivesThe concept of Turiyatitta, deeply embedded in spiritual philosophy, suggests a state where one can momentarily comprehend the perspectives of trillions of different life forms. This transcendent state goes beyond regular consciousness to a domain where the line between the individual and the collective blurs. Imagine perceiving the world not only…

"A group of prominent biologists and philosophers announced a new consensus: There’s “a realistic possibility” that insects, octopuses, crustaceans, fish and other overlooked animals experience consciousness."
...
"The declaration began to take shape last fall, following conversations between Sebo, Andrews and Birch. “The three of us were talking about how much has happened over the past 10 years, the past 15 years, in the science of animal consciousness,” Sebo recalled. We now know, for example, that octopuses feel pain and cuttlefish remember details of specific past events. Studies in fish have found that cleaner wrasse appear to pass a version of the “mirror test,” which indicates a degree of self-recognition, and that zebra fish show signs of curiosity. In the insect world, bees show apparent play behavior, while Drosophila fruit flies have distinct sleep patterns influenced by their social environment. Meanwhile, crayfish display anxiety-like states — and those states can be altered by anti-anxiety drugs."

There may be other forms of consciousness we cannot understand. Nonhuman animals’ precise relationship to human consciousness doesn’t make them less important.
A different take
We still do not know what makes the difference between being alive and having consciousness.
Octopi and other cephalopods have nervous systems throughout all their limbs. Their bodies are not a separate thing controlled by a brain or central nervous system.
So, measuring consciousness using a central nervous system like ours may lead us to believe they do not have pain capacity or even sentience. Yet behavioural studies show they express both, just differently to humans.

Artificial And/Or Animal Consciousness Quantum And Coming!
Artificial And/Or Animal Consciousness Quantum And Coming!
Artificial Consciousness Will Arise from Quantum Computing, and Consciousness Will Be Transcended! Present day electronics have nothing to do with consciousness. Electronics, up to 2000 CE had more to do with hydrology, water flowing through canals, with gates lifting and closing, etc. That sort of hydrology, with electrons, can duplicate the basic logic gates. Why would electricity flowing…

The specificity problem
Henry Shevlin has an interesting paper from 2021 in Mind & Language that just went open access: Non-human consciousness and the specificity problem: A modest theoretical proposal. Shevlin discusses the problem of applying cognitive theories of consciousness, developed within the context of human psychology, to non-human systems, such as animals or artificial systems. For example, under global…

This Scene Won’t Leave My Brain
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everyone has been adrenaline fueled, but their postures drops as he scolds them. Raph is still tense, used to bringing problems and complaints as dad’s second-in-command. Mikey and Leo seem to be processing Splinter’s intervention (Something that probably doesn’t happen often considering how blank and startled they seem at this turn of events), simply watching to see what comes of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And what does leaves them with a bitter taste in their mouths.
Raph seems disappointed and slightly confused.
Donnie looks like he’s taking his dad’s frustration to heart.
Leo doesn’t know what to make of this entire conversation.
And then Mikey. Me gosh, Mikey.
The dejection on his face, it’s just- I just- he’s just-
I mean, wow.
This is the kid the fandom deems to be the family therapist. I want to say that this child has never been more disappointed in his father in his life- but that’s the silent, shoulder-slumping defeat of someone who recognizes this- this blatant ignorance when faced with the problem at hand. The outright neglect of his fatherly duties when he should be stepping in, helping them to talk this out instead of simply telling them too. A child who understands that this isn’t abnormal, but somewhere deep down hoped that something might be different.
But, once again, Splinter’s not there to help solve the problem. He just wants to rant about their volume, not truly addressing anything, not sitting them down and talking them through it. He’s merely whining about a show when he should be helping solve the chaos in his household- solving the power dynamic crisis that he instigated.
This- This is the look of a son who expected more from his papi, but is forced to face a familiar reality where that won’t happen.

wondering about Frank and insects but specifically about how it looks like the WH insects are highly stylized, so does Frank even know anything about real butteflies/insects?
& if he saw a real one, would he recognize it? are all of the species names he applies to the WH bugs real, or are they all made up like "Vibrant Eyespot" or "Fluttering Heartwing"?
and then there's the question - does the neighborhood have some of the more 'undesirable' bugs like moths, worms, roaches, spiders? does it have bugs outside of the generic groups of beetles and butterflies? like are there mantids? leafbugs? dragonflies? weevils? or are those too specific/complex/not-cute for the Playfellow Workshop to have included?
and then there's the question of what are the bugs? props? puppets? are they alive or do the neighbors just perceive them as such? Do they even exist outside of art, storybooks, and animated segments? I highly doubt they're alive like the neighbors are, since in the gif of Frank's head spinning, the framed butterflies' wings are moving. which is kind of horrifying if you think about it for more than a second.
just... the critters Frank loves so so so much being a complete fabrication... every piece of knowledge he prides himself on / delights in knowing being utterly Untrue... oof
#by not-cute i mean that most bugs dont sell well as marketable plushies#cute butterflies? round adorable beetles? those fit right in with a vibrant puppet-y world#so it'd make sense if those are the only two bug groups that exist#along with like. caterpillars of course. i can also see bees being a probable candidate for Existing In The World#AGHHHHH THIS HAS BEEN EATING AT ME FOR DAYS NOW#been questioning how the neighbors' consciousness and awareness manifests as well#might make a different post on that since this one has a Topic and id like to Stay On It for once#well. its related. but that deserves its own Pondering#welcome home speculation#i dont know what else to tag this as!#absolutely unprompted#ALSO ALSO are there any animals outside of insects?#does the neighborhood have birdsong but no birds? if one listens real hard to it will they notice it looping?#do they have squirrels? critters in general? is that why wally doesnt know what a rat is? he'd have no reason to.#in his world they simply don't exist.#anyway but i wonder how frank would react to seeing a real butterfly (& insects in general)#the WH ones are gigantic in comparison and overly-colorful and friendly & cutesy#wouldnt it be painful if he was scared of them. if they look too alien. would it be the spongebob butterfly episode all over again#many many thoughts tonight....#but also....#what if he tried to frame a real one. expecting it to be Fine and Alive when he pins it bc they always have been#theyve always been perfectly happy fluttering in their frames#but a real one would fucking die. so. yikes#traumatic core memory unlocked! frank frankly has discovered Death

Mechtober Day 24: Inhuman
Tired today bc I’ve pulled 2 all-nighters in a row for uni so this is old art. It’s my design for pre- and post-Bifrost Garm from the (presumably) defunct Bifrost Incident fancomic project I was a part of a couple of years ago.
I’m gonna go catch up on some sleep now, but I’ll be back tomorrow 🫡
