Fall mining bees, subgenus Callandrena
The top one is a Cloudy-winged Mining Bee (Andrena nubecula)
The other two are species that can't be easily distinguished in the field. They are either the Simple Mining Bee (Andrea Simplex) or the Peaceful Mining Bee (Andrena placata)
September 2023
Southeastern Pennsylvania

Bug of the Day
So I spent like an hour and a half sweep netting various parts of my yard for the City Nature Challenge last weekend, and the most interesting thing I found is probably this adorable mining bee (Andrena sp.) that somehow ended up perching on the outside of the net. I did not even notice it until I was on my way to putting the net back in the garage :-). Anyway, the back legs on this wee beastie are just 🔥🔥🔥

Andreana going into heat regularly after joining Rhodes island and only being able to keep it together by locking herself in her room. Eventually asking for suppressants or something to help with dealing with it. She doesn’t realize that every month Specter is shooting up from her sleep and needs to be restrained because she goes into a frenzy no one can identify. Skadi ends up leaving once a month and returning later after the first few times.
Eventually after the events of the Stulfira Navis they return back and go to indoctrinate Andreana into being a hunter and it goes fine for a day or two until it starts a little early. Shes not ready for what sex with the hunters is like, especially Laurentina who the captain had to grab by the throat and throw into her room with skadi to contain her

Large Scabious Mining Bee (Andrena hattorfiana)
A female collecting pollen from a Field Scabious (Knautia arvensis) to serve as food for her larvae in their burrow.
The larvae only eat the pollen from Knautia species while the imago may feed on other teasel (Dipsacaceae) species if necessary.

One of the most common #Andrena in the Mid-Atlantic.  A. carlini.  Black scopal hairs narrow it down, and the black on the sides of the thorax and cheek nail it.

Tumblr media
Taxonomie:
Règne: Animalia
Embranchement: Arthropoda
Classe: Insecta
Ordre: Hymenoptera
Famille: Andrenidae
Genre: Andrena
