I have a gripe with Modern AU! Javier concepts icl...often I'm not fond of the au that much but javier in particular 💀

Mariachi bands, social activists and politics aren't exclusively a 19th century thing you know that right?

Imo he wouldn't be a punk rock or metal artist at all because the music he sings are folk songs and romantic tunes, and to many Latin American people the former are things that are still sung today. To me, my modern AU Javier would be a Mariachi guitarist who is also apart of leftist activist groups in Mexico. Him being a revolutionary is such a core aspect of his backstory and the reason he sides with Dutch in the first place and I feel as though it's overlooked too often. In addition, Javier himself is very fond of his home and nationality which is why he risked his life to reform it for the better so it's more likely he'd stay in Mexico in a modern day setting.

Maybe it's just my history brain making me want to preserve the culture of the few POC characters in popular media, but I feel like it's so much more interesting to embrace the aspects of his character that are linked to his heritage in Modern AUs.

Sorry, anon, I hope you can put up with all of this. <3 Because my natural instinct is to say, “Dr. Johnny did nothing wrong!! He is my man and he can do no wrong!!!! 😤😤😤”

Lmao spoilers for Okja below the cut!

On a real note, Johnny is one of the most interesting characters in Okja to me because of his depth. While basically every character in Okja is presented as a kind of archetype with their own twist (EX: Jay is gentle and kind and soft spoken but he also has a streak of anger and aggression in him when out comes to the things he cares for; Lucy believes she's doing good for the world but also completely disregards the negative effects of her company), I think Johnny's little twist is so fascinating??

He's presented as this fun and wacky TV personality who is all in for the animals. But over the course of the film, we see that Mirando has been puppeteering him entirely. They've turned him into their little marketing marionette. So when Mija and Okja come in, he's understandably upset! He spends ten years of his life pouring into this company only for them to drop him as soon as he stops benefiting them. Aside from Johnny's self important view, he has a few moments where he mistreats Okja. This completely contradicts his supposed dedication to animals.

Overall, I think his character can be such a great reflection of how capitalism and this pursuit of progress can completely break a person down. Because not only has Johnny found himself in the position of being a corporate puppet, but this pushes his alcoholism and pushes him to compromise on his morals even further. I think Johnny is equal parts a victim and a perpetrator in Okja.

But again, on a silly note, he is my babygirl. My sweet cheese. My rotten soldier. My good time boy. On every single level I adore him. I love his goofy little outfits, his silly little mustache, his shrill ass voice, and his weasel-like physicality. He beguiles me entirely. So yes. He is my blorbo. 🥰
