THE JIMMY DURANTE SHOW
“Women in Industry” ~ April 28, 1948
Tumblr media
“The Jimmy Durante Show” aired on NBC from October 1, 1947 to June 30, 1950. It was a continuation of the NBC / CBS radio series “The Durante-Moore Show” after Garry Moore left when he was offered his own show on CBS Television. The series originally starred with recurring guest stars Peggy Lee and Florence Halop. In its last season, actor and personality Alan Young was brought in as Durante's straight man.  At the end of the 1947-48 season, the show was tied for the number 7 show on the air along with “Philco Radio Time” on ABC and “Dr. Christian” on CBS. The show managed to stay in the top ten throughout its entire run. The series ended in June 1950 after Durante made a move to television with a starring role on NBC's “Four Star Revue.”
The program was televised at Club Durant. Each episode usually ended with Durante's catchphrase, "Good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!", an apparent reference to Durante's deceased first wife. This program was sponsored by Rexall Drugs. It was produced and directed by Phil Cohan.
Synopsis ~ Jimmy and guest Lucille Ball tour the country to see how women fit into American industry.
CAST
Jimmy Durante (Host)  was a multi-talented performer who was distinguished by his bulbous nose. In “Lucy Meets Harpo Marx” (ILL S4;E28) Lucy Ricardo dons a novelty store mask and trench coat to impersonate Durante for a nearsighted Carolyn Appleby. His classic profile was featured on “I Love Lucy” when Lucy goes to the Hollywood Brown Derby, where his caricature takes up two frames above her booth. Lucille Ball has an uncredited role in his 1935 film Carnival. In “Lucy Goes to a Hollywood Premiere” (TLS S4;E20) on February 7, 1966, Durante makes a cameo appearance accompanied by his wife, Margie Little.
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (Guest Star) had previously been on Durante’s radio show on October 29, 1947. She had played an uncredited role in his film Carnival in 1935.  Ball was just a few months from staring her radio series “My Favorite Husband,” which launched in July 1948.  Her film Her Husband’s Affairs was in theatres. At the time of this broadcast she was filming Sorrowful Jones with Bob Hope.
Peggy Lee (Regular Cast) was a singer and actress who, like Lucille Ball, was also born in Jamestown - but in North Dakota, not New York.  Lee was a Grammy-winning singer and composer.
Roy Bargy and his Orchestra (Music)
The Crew Chiefs (Singers)
Howard Petrie (Announcer) would appear with Lucille Ball in Fancy Pants (1950).
Victor Moore, usually part of the cast, is not in this episode.
EPISODE
Announcer Howard Petrie opens with a few bars of his signature songs “Inka Dinka Doo” and “You Gotta Start Off Each Day with a Song.”  Petrie and Durante talk about the wedding of the year: Lana Turner to Bob Topping. Durante says that he picked out her torso. Petrie corrects him saying her ‘trousseau’ cost her $30,000. Durante says he picked out her wedding gown, especially the train.
DURANTE: “It wasn’t an ordinary train. Lana was wearing the Super Chief!”
Tumblr media
Lana Turner married Henry 'Bob’ Topping Jr. on April 26, 1948, just two days before this broadcast. He was her third husband, but she would marry four more times in her life!
Durante jokes about President Truman throwing out the first ball at the Washington Senators first game. Durante sings the novelty song “I’ll Never Forget the Day I Read a Book.”
Tumblr media
After a Rexall commercial, Durante introduces Lucille Ball. Lucy talks about making Sorrowful Jones with Bob Hope. Durante is jealous of Hope’s nose!
Tumblr media
LUCY: “When it comes to noses, he’s a retailer. You’re a wholesaler.”
Lucy wants to get down to the reason for her visit: woman in industry. They travel into the future to see how things might be different if women were captains of industry.
In the future, Lucy comes home from the office and Jimmy is doing housework. The banter is classic domestic role reversal. Lucy compliments him on his housekeeping.
Back in the present, Lucy and Durante introduce Peggy Lee. Lucy says her gown is an original by Schiaparelli. Peggy says hers is by Hattie Carnegie.
Tumblr media
Before coming to Hollywood, Lucille Ball was a model for Hattie Carnegie in New York.
LUCY: “The shoes are by Capezio, the handbag is an Evans creation, and the hat is by John Frederick.” DURANTE: “Notice they didn’t say anything about Adrian, who’s spending every moment whipping up my new spring halter.”
Tumblr media
Peggy Lee sings “It’s the Sentimental Thing To Do”.
After another Rexall commercial, Peggy and Lucy are still interested in pursuing women in industry.  Jimmy, Peggy, and Lucy sing “Any State in the 48″ as they take a magic carpet around the country.
First stop: Milwaukee, Wisconsin to visit the Shultz Pickle Works.  Mr. Schultz mistakes Durante’s nose for a cucumber.  They are curious to know if the pickle industry would be good for women. Lucy tries a pickle to see if it will make her pucker. While she is puckered, the phones rings and it is Governor Folsom of Alabama asking Durante to keep Lucy ‘puckered up’ till he gets there!
Tumblr media
On March 3, 1948, Governor Jim Folsom's name was in headlines across the nation when the 30-year-old Christine Johnston, a widow who had met Folsom in late 1944 while she was working as a cashier at the Tutwiler Hotel in Birmingham, filed a paternity suit against the governor by alleging that he was the father of her 22-month-old son. Nine days after the suit was filed Folsom appeared on the sidewalk in front of the Barbizon Modeling School in New York City, where he kissed a hundred pretty models who had voted him "The Nation's Number One Leap Year Bachelor." Johnston dropped the suit for a cash settlement. Years later, he admitted that he was indeed the father of Johnston's child. On May 5, 1948, Folsom married 20-year-old Jamelle Moore, a secretary at the state Highway Department, whom he had met during his 1946 campaign and had been dating and seeing "almost daily" since then.
Next stop: Paris, Illinois. They are visiting the second largest perfume factory in the country, owned by Hot Breath Houlihan.
DURANTE: “Now I know who set B.O. Plenty’s house on fire!”
Tumblr media
B.O. Plenty was a character from Dick Tracy comic strip by Chester Gould. In March 1948, his house mysteriously burned down and everyone feared the character was dead. Readers actually wrote to the newspaper begging Gould not to kill off B.O. Plenty and Gravel Gertie!
Houlihan sells perfumes named Abandon, Yield, Retreat, and Surrender.
DURANTE: “Haven’t you got something with a bit more will power?”
Houlihan says she became a success by developing a perfume called Go Away Henry Wallace.
HOULIHAN: “When a girl is sitting on the sofa with her boyfriend, she don’t want a third party!”
Tumblr media
Henry Wallace was the 33rd vice president of the United States. He was also the presidential nominee of the left-wing Progressive Party in the 1948 election.
Last stop: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They visit a steel factory and talk to the head man (who is obviously voiced by a female).  She says that women have no place in the steel industry.  But Lucille convinces her otherwise, and they conclude their magic carpet tour of the USA.

Steve Jobs | Randy Pausch | Alan Rickman | Luciano Pavarotti
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If there’s one name people associate with computers – people with probably say Bill Gates, that nerdy guy who knows how to code in your school or Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs was undeniably a giant in the tech world – after reading Walter Isaacson’s biography of him made me realise all the more how he mostly single-handedly changed the way we interact with technology and how it’s become so ubiquitous in our everyday lives. Here is Steve Job’s timeless Stanford commencement speech:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF8uR6Z6KLc
youtube
Randy Pausch who gave his ‘Last Lecture’ gave one of the most inspiring talks I’ve ever heard – if you feel you can’t achieve something, lacking motivation – please watch it and quickly change your mind. You can watch it here:

Alan Rickman is best known as Professor Snape – so I’ve always grown up with him first as that mean, creepy teacher who became something of a tragic anti-hero, but also playing the Sheriff in Robin Hood, the Hans Gruber in Die Hard. His death was truly a shock and it became part of what was the ‘obituary year’ of 2016.

Lucia Pavarotti was one of the Three Tenors and gave opera a voice in the modern age, there will never be a voice quite like his https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VATmgtmR5o4

All these men died from pancreatic cancer. This is a form of cancer that is notoriously depressing – not just because it stole great men from the world but also because it is extremely hard to detect early, and when there are finally symptoms, it is often beyond the point of recuperation.
First of all, let’s start with the fundamentals – what is the pancreas? (Figure 1) It’s a tongue like organ located in the upper left part of the body behind the stomach and is necessary for producing a variety of hormones and helping digestion via the secretion of digestive enzymes in the small intestine. Now the pancreas is vital for controlling levels of blood sugar and that’s why people with diabetes have problems with their pancreas and its two main hormones: insulin and glucagon. Insulin – acts to LOWER blood sugar when levels get too high; Glucagon – acts to RAISE blood sugar when levels get too low. The average blood sugar level is anything below 11.1 mmol/L for a random sample, and between 4.0 to 6.0 mmol/L after fasting (normally around 8 hours – overnight typically).
 Figure 1 – Pancreas anatomy
Tumblr media
Here’s a great clip describing what the pancreas does in an easy to understand manner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l2GTGEwZOY
youtube
Now pancreatic cancer is a whole other beast on top of the pancreatic pathophysiology. Cancer is basically when the native cells go crazy which deranges the whole structure and function of the organ. The most common subtype in pancreatic cancer is the pancreatic adenocarcinoma which makes up 85% of cases. Adenocarcinoma being the MALIGNANT version of adenoma which is a benign tumour of epithelial tissue (surface lining tissue) from GLANDULAR ORIGIN. As we have mentioned, the pancreas is an organ which synthesises hormones via two types of gland: endocrine – through to the bloodstream directly or exocrine – via a body cavity.
The majority of pancreatic cancers originate in the pancreatic exocrine glands – around 95% where the digestive enzymes are produced. The next common subtypes are described with 5% of cases are from acinar cells which secrete digestive enzymes, and 1% of cases form from cystadenocarcinomas.
It is unclear regarding the clear causation of pancreatic cancers – but there are certain modifiable risk factors such as smoking which increases the risk 2 to 5 fold, obesity (most likely linked in with blood sugar levels – Type 2 diabetes is linked with obesity) and diet particular one that is high in red meat. Some non-modifiable risk factors include being male, being Black, and being over 65 years old. In fact, pancreatic cancer is rare under the age of 40 with half of all cases being in patients over 70. Associated diseases such as diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, and liver cirrhosis which have all also been linked with alcohol abuse.
Regarding family history, certain genes have been linked with pancreatic cancer: BRCA2 and PALB2. 5-10% of cases have a hereditary component and if there is a first degree relative (parents/children) with pancreatic cancer then this risk increases further more.
Here’s the difficulty with pancreatic cancer, its initial symptoms are vague. Commonly in the initial stages, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss – either via cancer associated anorexia or malabsorption where there may be steatorrhea (foul smelling stools). The steatorrhoea can be explained where the tumour may compress surrounding organs especially the stomach which then leads to symptoms of nausea and fullness due to poor absorption – therefore constipation is also common. There may also be mid epigastric pain which radiates to the mid/lower back which is worse at night when lying down flat. There may also be the presence of Trousseau sign which is when blood clots are felt underneath the skin in superficial veins or Courvoisier sign where there is an enlarged, palpable gallbladder which is not tender – in fact Courvoisier’s law states that the presence of a palpably enlarged gallbladder which is non-tender with painless jaundice – the cause is unlikely to be gallstones, and hence the cause is more likely to be malignancy of the gallbladder or the pancreas. This is because in gallstones which are formed over a period of time, the gallbladder becomes shrunken and scarred which means it does not distend easily, this contrasts a more acute obstruction of the biliary tree where the gallbladder is often enlarged and hence more easily palpated.
Figure 2 – Biliary Tree anatomy
Tumblr media
Depending on where the tumour is within the pancreas, there may be different symptoms. For instance, if the tumour is near the head of the pancreas, it may obstruct the common bile duct (which is commonly obstructed with gallstones from the gallbladder) – obstructive jaundice may then present with dark urine and lighter stools. If the endocrine glands are affected, a new onset of diabetes may also be a presenting factor.
Figure 3 - Jaundice
Tumblr media
Figure 4 – Trosseau sign
Tumblr media
Laboratory findings are non-specific which furthers the difficulty diagnosing pancreatic cancer. Serum amylase and serum lipase (two enzymes) may be elevated, CA 19-9 antigen which helps with immune surveillance and CEA – a glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion may also be raised. However as mentioned, given these markers are non-specific – they may be elevated in people without cancer especially smokers and hence these cannot be relied on for diagnosis. In fact regarding CA 19-9, 5% lack the Lewis (a) antigen and hence cannot produce the marker – it has a sensitivity of 80% and sensitivity of 73%. In patients with obstructive jaundice increased liver function tests – alkaline phosphatase, transaminase and bilirubin will also be increased.
Imaging is useful where the hallmark tests are endoscopic ultrasound – where a fine needle biopsy may be performed as well and CT scan to decide upon the severity of the tumour.
The staging of pancreatic cancer is in 4 stages:
Stage 1: <2cm
Stage 2: >2cm
Stage 3: invasion into local tissue
Stage 4: metastasis – spread through bloodstream and lymph
Metastasis spread begins to the local lymph nodes and later to the liver, large intestine, peritoneal cavity or lungs. Spread to the bone and brain is rare.
 Figure 5 – CT scan
Tumblr media
The management of pancreatic cancer is chemotherapy which may be administered in different ways: neoadjuvant therapy (before surgery to shrink the tumour), adjuvant therapy (after surgery) or by itself for patients who are deemed too high risk for surgery. Adjuvant chemotherapy includes gemcitabine or 5-FU (fluorouracil) for a period of 1 to 2 months. Currently use radiotherapy is controversial and has been overtaken by chemotherapy as the mainstay of management.
Surgery with intention for treatment can only benefit in a fifth of cases – first of all the factor of the tumour size must be considered and secondary to this is the proximity of blood vessels and the risk of the procedure. One procedure which is the most commonly practised regarding tumours in the head of the pancreas is the Whipple procedure which involves removing the head of the pancreas and the curve of the duodenum (pancreato-duodenectomy) and creating a bypass for food from the stomach to the jejunum (gastro-jenostomy) and attaching a loop of jejunum to the cystic duct to drain bile (cholecysto-jejunostomy). For tumours involving the body and the tail of the pancreas, a procedure called a distal pancreatectomy may be performed.
Figure 6 – Whipple procedure
Tumblr media
As mentioned, the prognosis of pancreatic cancer is very poor given the advanced state it is in by the time it is detected. Another factor to consider is the rates of depression associated with pancreatic cancer. Palliative care is an essential part of the management of patients that have a terminal outcome where pain is managed with opioids or nerve block on the nerves transmitting pain in the abdomen. Pancreatin contains manufactured pancreatic enzymes for patients suffering from from digestive disorder from the exocrine insufficiency. Draining of the stomach can be performed by nasogastric aspiration and proton pump inhibitors or H2 antagonists which reduce the production of gastric acid. Metoclopramide can also be used to clear stomach contents.
Regarding ongoing research and the future for pancreatic cancer management, there are current screening trials from the European Registry of Hereditary Pancreatitis and Familial Pancreatic Cancer (EUROPAC) and research as to whether laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) would be more appropriate in treatment compared with Whipple’s procedure. Irreversible electroporation – a new ablation technique using electrical fields to lead to cell death on a nanopore level has shown promise. There is also ongoing pharmaceutical research targeting the various mechanism of cancers, many of which have shown promise thus far.
So a devastating form of cancer that we still have a long way to go before even claiming a possibility of a cure but the research has made leaps and bounds in recent years. As mentioned in the introduction, even in the face of death these great men changed the world in their own way - the challenge is for us then, how will we make our dent in the universe?

Lucy in the Music World
S4;E3 ~ September 27, 1965
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Synopsis
When Lucy takes a job in a music producer's office, she wangles her new neighbor into a gig on a television show.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carmichael)
Gale Gordon (Theodore J. Mooney) and Mary Jane Croft (Mary Jane Lewis) do not appear in this episode.
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Mel Tormé (Mel Tinker) was a musician nicknamed 'the velvet fog'.  He was best known as a singer of jazz standards. He was also a jazz composer and arranger, drummer, an actor in radio, film, and television, and the author of five books. He composed the music for "The Christmas Song" ("Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire") and co-wrote the lyrics with Bob Wells. He reprised the role of Mel Tinker in a two-part episode in season five. Tormé died in 1999 at the age of 73.
Tumblr media
Lou Krugman (Barney Miller) was born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1914. He made a memorable debut at Desilu as the ever-patient film director in “Lucy Gets Into Pictures” (ILL S4;18). After that episode was filmed, Lucy sent him a telegram telling him how impressed she was with his acting. She rewarded him with appearances in “The Great Train Robbery,” (ILL S5;E5) and the role of the Club Babalu’s Manager in “Lucy and Bob Hope” (ILL S6;E1) and “Lucy Meets Orson Welles” (ILL S6;E3). He previously appeared as the science teacher in “Lucy Takes Up Chemistry” (S1;E26) and will make one future appearance on the show.
Mr. Miller is an executive at Pop Records.
Tumblr media
Reb Foster (Himself) was one of the most influential disc jockeys in Los Angeles during the sixties. He also managed the rock groups Steppenwolf, The Turtles, and Three Dog Night.
Twenty uncredited singers and dancers appear on the “Wing Ding” show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mr. Miller ask Lucy: “You think you can function in our mad mad mad mad world?”  This is a nod to one of the most successful comedies of 1964 It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. The film featured quite a few actors who have (or will) appear on “Lucy” shows: Charles Lane, Ethel Merman, Milton Berle, Buddy Hackett, Dick Shawn, Phil Silvers, Edie Adams, Alan Carney, Lloyd Corrigan, Edward Everett Horton, Roy Roberts, Jack Benny, Allen Jenkins, Monty O'Grady, Barbara Pepper, and Elliott Reid.
While taking shorthand, Lucy says she is simultaneously writing a letter to her aunt who lives in Schenectady.
Tumblr media
Mel Tormé wrote and performed the original songs "Whatever Happened to the Moon?" and (with Lucy) "My Trousseau Just Lies on the Shelf.”
My trousseau just lies on the shelf Since his surfboard came back by itself. My tears drown my heart with emotion Since my dropout dropped into the ocean. He said that I bugged him when I say things to him Like don't learn to surf 'Til 'ya learn how to swim.
Tumblr media
“Wing Ding” is hosted by Reb Foster and presents:
Tumblr media
The Six Bare Feet (three barefoot boys);
Tumblr media
The Torch Bearers (three girls in beehives);
Tumblr media
and the DDTs (four boys with hair over their eyes playing guitars). Reb says that the DDT's will “do away with the Beatles.”  Their look is clearly a satire on the Beatles.  Their verse of “Wing Ding” mentions 007, aka Ian Fleming's spy character James Bond.  When this episode was filmed Goldfinger was about to be released in London. By the time it aired, the film was in release in the US.
“Wing Ding” has a sponsor named Mr. Thornton who lives in San Francisco.
Tumblr media
Some of Pop Records biggest hits:
“He Wears a Hubcap for a Halo” - about a teenage girl whose boyfriend got run over by a police car.
“I've Got Tears in My Ears from Lying on My Back in My Bed While I'm Crying Over You”
“I Lost You to the Arms of Another” - about a girl whose boyfriend goes skin diving and gets tangled up with an octopus.
Tumblr media
Lucy says she has a knack for knowing what teenagers want to listen to because she was a teenager for seven whole years. Lucy would have been a teenager between 1924 and 1931, forty years ago. She neglects to mention that she is currently the mother of a music-mad teenage girl (Chris).
When one of The Six Bare Feet drops a saxophone on his toes, Lucy looks for a replacement act but the Heartaches are in Vegas, the Weeping Willows are in Miami, the Four Sob Sisters are in Fresno, and the Cry Babies are in Oakland. Lucy suggest that she and Mel form an act called The Tear Ducts.
Callback!
Tumblr media
Lucy also acted as talent scout for a musical TV show in “Lucy and the Plumber” (S3;E2) where she discovers Beauty the dog and then Harry Tuttle, a virtuoso violinist and plumber.
Blooper Alert!
Tumblr media
Since Mel Tinker lives next door to Lucy in her Los Angeles complex, his apartment is simply Lucy's re-dressed.  It is odd, however, that a full sized motorcycle could be taken up to the second floor.  The bike is a 1962 Honda Dream.
Tumblr media
When Lucy is reading the album covers, they clearly have her lines of dialogue describing the songs taped to the back.  The second album has no cover art at all.
Tumblr media
“Lucy in the Music World” rates 3 Paper Hearts out of 5
