“He’s not nuts.” “Well, then he’s an asshole..... Welcome to the family.”

That moment when you realise just how much this is hurting Phoebe. How much of her childhood has she been labelled with different words ranging from “special”, or “nuts”, accused of being strange or coming across as an asshole? Her own father walked out on her and her family because he couldn’t understand or bond with her. This girl is clearly neurotypical, most likely on the spectrum, intellectual and brilliant beyond her years, but can’t always express or feel things the same as everyone else. Even with the decent relationships she has with her mum, brother and even finding a friend in Podcast (Which the film emphasises is a massive achievement for her. Even with those, none of them will every truly get her or have a bond like the one she could have had with Egon. 

I can’t help but think it’s like it all hits her at once, that Egon went through so much, was so passionate and smart, but always so misunderstood and alone. Just like her. Is the way everyone sees Egon the same as people will always see her? Is it because the way her mother talks about him while not even wanting to understand why. How difficult it is for people like her and her grandfather to be understood. Egon and Phoebe could have been so, so much happier if they were allowed to have a life together. And you can tell it hurts Phoebe so much to know why never got to have that. This child has likely gotten use to a certain sense of loneliness and/or acceptance at being an outcast. But standing in front of her mother, knowing what she could have had, that no one understands her or Egon about what’s going on, she feels more alone than ever.
