#ad Brazil has a long and violent history of producing racial inequalities. As the last country to abolish slavery in the Americas, this relatively recent colonial history of slavery still impacts Brazil’s Black, Indigenous, and Quilombola communities. The SETA Project aims to advance racial equity by transforming Brazil’s education system to be anti-racist. SETA in Portuguese means “arrow,” which represents a symbol of justice that this program aims to take back, with the hopes of spearheading change and agility.
ActionAid Brazil works with Ação Educativa, the National Campaign for the Right to Education in Brazil, the National Coordination for the Articulation of Black Quilombola Rural Communities (CONAQ), Geledés – Black Woman Institute, and UNEfro Brasil to achieve this.
Listen as SETA Program Director Ana Paula Brandão shares how they are harnessing youth, education, and Black movements to trigger this national healing process and transform Brazil’s public schools by 2030.

hi if you could please go on twitter and search about whats happening rn in manaus - brazil, there are threads in english bc we NEED help, spread the word!!! (also english is not my first language so if i said something wrong im sorry!!) - manauaras (the locals) are dying because theres NO oxygen to save people infected with corona! the goverment does nothing and we are trying our best using donations...
hello angel!!! i'm so sorry for replying this late, i had previously deleted the tumblr app and just recently got back. unfortunately, during this time the situation in brazil didn't improve in any way, on the contrary it looks like it's getting worse and worse everyday. as of now brazil registers almost 2000 daily deaths because of covid, the disease is spreading like wildfire in the country and there are not enough vaccines to fight it – and if that wasn't enough brazilians are now also facing the spread of a more contagious variant of coronavirus that may cause reinfection. meanwhile president bolsonaro continues to hail questionable "miracle remedies", first hydroxychloroquine and now an untested nasal spray made in israel. the way he's dealing with this delicate situation is considered unacceptable by many brazilians (he literally asked civilians to "stop whining" after brazil's worst day of coronavirus) who are asking and protesting for his impeachment, so the country is not only fighting a sanitary crisis, but also a political one. brazilians are dying and they need our help! please if you can consider donating to the country and contribute to share what's going on.

Lecture exposes pension fund’s links to Brazil land grabs
Tumblr media
Altamiran Ribeiro, a Brazilian land rights activist and a representative of the Pastoral Land Commission of the Catholic Church for the northeastern Brazilian state of Piauí, spoke at the University in Mergenthaler Hall on Thursday, Oct. 17. Ribeiro spoke about the mass land takeovers on behalf of large corporate developers in Brazil and the long-term consequences such land grabs can have on local communities and the environment.
Ribeiro explained that Piauí has recently become a prime target for land developers since the real estate opportunities there are potentially highly profitable.
He stated that Piauí is relatively underdeveloped, accounts for 70 percent of Brazil’s total water supply and contains one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world. The land is also rich in natural resources that have up till now have been largely untapped.
“There’s interest to extract precious minerals and also iron minerals,“ Ribeiro said.
Ribeiro explained that the developers are backed financially by international investors. A pamphlet circulated at the event by international anti-poverty non-governmental organization ActionAid noted that one such investor is the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America (TIAA), a pension fund which has nearly a trillion dollars in total assets and five million clients working with it.

Charity votes
It’s that time of the year again when I let you guys vote on what I’ll donate to ActionAid. Every year the Swedish branch offers “good holiday gifts“ to be sent to women in the areas where the organization is working (in some of the poorest regions in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Vietnam, Zimbabwe among others). ActionAid focuses on girls and women, and strengthen their rights and gives them support in different ways.
Them rules: Cast three votes on what you think I should buy. I’ll send off the four gifts with the most votes (if there are ties, I will send both). To vote, leave a comment or reblog this post with your vote.
(I’m buying four gifts of my own choice but here’s your chance to add more things I should send)
This year’s gifts from ActionAid:
Menstruation protection: Girls in poor countries miss up to 50 school days a year because they don’t have access to sanitary pads or ways to clean themselves. This gift includes sanitary pads and support to educators working against the social stigma of menstruation.
Women’s rights activist: Give support to an activist working locally with education and in the judical system for women’s rights in places where they are the most vulnerable.
Mango tree: Pay for a family to start a mango groove. Food, nutrition and extra income for generations.
Goats: Give a woman two goats, the beginning of a herd. Milk and meat production for food and extra income. (Includes education in how to care for the animals)
School year: Pay for a poor girl’s basic education for a year.
Donkey: Transportation of goods and themselves give women more mobility and ability to sell their crops, and can save lives in places where the nearest doctor is far away.
Village midwife: Pay for the education of a midwife in rural areas. She will save lives and work against the practice of female genital mutilation.
School books: Books to help a girl with her higher education.
Beehives: Bees are awesome. Give a woman some beehives and an education in how to care for them. Will bring honey and increased crops.
Chickens: Give a woman a set of chickens, and an education in how to care for them. Eggs and meat for food for the family and to sell for extra income.
Bike: Give a girl a bike to help her get to school and other places she and her family needs to go.
Cast your votes before December 10th!

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP25) at Madrid failed to build consensus on crucial issues of carbon markets, compensation for climate change induced ‘loss and damage’ to vulnerable countries and enhancing nationally determined contribution (NDCs) by parties to meet the Paris Agreement goals. The talks which concluded on Sunday after negotiations were pushed into an overtime of nearly 48 hours couldn’t make progress because some rich countries failed to recognise the urgency of climate change according to observers.“Disappointment” and “unfortunate” were the key words used by almost every other party negotiator at the closing plenary on Sunday afternoon. Ironically COP 25 had a tagline of #TimeforAction.“I am disappointed with the results of #COP25. The international community lost an important opportunity to show increased ambition on mitigation, adaptation & finance to tackle the climate crisis. But we must not give up, and I will not give up” tweeted Antonio Guterres, Secretary General, United Nations.Civil society organizations and independent observers of the negotiations said the failure in making progress was mainly owing to big polluters including the United States, Australia, Brazil and Saudi Arabia blocking and slowing down discussions on both loss and damage and carbon markets covered under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and not responding to the call to enhance NDCs in 2020.On markets, the red lines were that some countries led by Brazil pushed for double counting to be allowed. When one country sells emissions reductions to another, it must adjust its own emissions data accordingly so that sellers don’t get credit twice on the work they did on the same project. But they insisted that those be counted.Carry over of Kyoto era carbon credits from the Clean Development Mechanism which India, China and Brazil were demanding was a major red line for the European Union and other developed parties. In short, the parties failed to develop a cheating proof, collapse proof system which has environmental integrity and actually manages to mitigate overall global emissions.“Carbon market mechanisms have had a history of human rights violations. They have been ineffective at reducing emissions. They delay the action and ambition needed here and now. There is no longer time for inaction. During the talks, Australia, EU, US and Canada attempted to ram through rules rife with major loopholes that would have locked us into further emissions and derail us from the 1.5 degree commitment. Such loopholes include double counting, no core regulations for accounting, and no human rights or environmental safeguards,” said Sriram Madhusoodanan of the Corporate Accountability watchdog over phone from Madrid. There was also no decision on long-term climate finance (financial support from developed countries to developing countries). The failure on this sparked anguish among several developing parties. “Today we are not even able to affirm the importance of climate finance. When we ratified the Paris Agreement, we didn’t expect this. Some parties are backsliding on the Paris Agreement,” Egypt’s negotiator said. India had also been demanding a clear decision on this one and pre-2020 commitment of developed nations on mobilizing 100 billion dollars by 2020 for mitigation and adaptation. Article 6 was a crucial issue for India because it has a backlog of millions of unsold credits from CDM.On reparations to be paid to countries facing irreversible impacts like sea level rise, deadly cyclones, severe heat waves etc, United States allegedly lobbied to escape any liability to pay up. Tuvalu negotiator Ian Fry said “We have had one party who has been insisting that the WIM (Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage) only operates under the Paris Agreement. This party (US) won’t be a party to the Paris Agreement in a few months. It’s a travesty and tragedy…could be interpreted as a crime against humanity.”The draft text on loss and damage talks about scaling up finance and technology support but fails to underline the need for additional finance for compensation.“These talks are ending with a strong sense of déjà vu. The US has once again gotten its way through bullying and tricks...this decision only offers statements of intent, working groups and networks, which should have been in place years ago,” said Harjeet Singh, ActionAid’s global lead on climate change. The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) tweeted on Saturday that developed and some developing countries met on Article 6 and carryover old credits but didn’t inform the least developed nations about it.The master text for COP25 captured in draft decision CP 25 also failed articulate the urgency for action. It has sentences like “Stresses the urgency of enhanced ambition in order to ensure the highest possible mitigation and adaptation efforts by all Parties.”…” Recalls the commitment made by developed country Parties, in the context of meaningful mitigation actions and transparency on implementation, to a goal of mobilizing jointly USD 100 billion per year by 2020…” Parties said the language was too weak and didn’t provide hope that these would be delivered on in the future. This despite leaders from vulnerable countries and the Climate Ambition Alliance (group of countries willing to enhance NDCs to meet Paris goal) demanding on Friday that they will not leave Madrid without a very clear call to raise ambition in ine with the IPCC special report on 1.5 degree global warming. The master document only invites parties to make use of information contained in the Special Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on Land degradation and Oceans.“The result of this COP25 is really a mixed bag, and a far cry from what science tells us is needed. Major players who needed to deliver in Madrid did not live up to expectations, but thanks to a progressive alliance of small island states, European, African and Latin American countries, we obtained the best possible outcome, against the will of big polluters,” said Laurence Tubiana, CEO European Climate Foundation and Paris Agreement Architect in a statement. The Paris treaty goals of capping global warmiThe COP25 deal “expresses the urgent need” for new carbon cutting commitments to close the gap between current emissions and ng at below two degrees
A marathon UN summit wrapped up Sunday with little to show, squeezing hard-earned compromises from countries over a global warming battle plan that fell well short of what science says is needed to tackle the climate crisis.
The COP25 deal “expresses the urgent need” for new carbon cutting commitments to close the gap between current emissions and the Paris treaty goal of capping temperature at below two degrees, host country Spain said in a statement.
“Today the citizens of the world are asking for us to move ahead faster and better, in financing, adaptation, mitigation,” Carolina Schmidt, Chilean environment minister and President of COP25, told the closing plenary.
Following a year of deadly extreme weather and weekly strikes by millions of young people demanding action, negotiations in Madrid were under pressure to send a clear signal that governments were willing to double down.
The summit—moved at the last minute from Chile due to unrest—at times teetered on the brink of collapse as rich polluters, emerging powerhouses and climate-vulnerable nations groped for common ground in the face of competing national interests.
“Based on the adopted text, there is a glimmer of hope that the heart of the Paris Agreement is still beating,” said Mohamed Adow, Director of Power Shift, referring the treaty inked in the French capital.
“But its pulse is very weak.”
Negotiators from nearly 200 nations came to Spain’s capital with the aim of finalising the rulebook for the 2015 agreement, which enjoins nations to limit global temperature to below two degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit).

World carbon emissions in 2018 and changes from 2008
‘Missing in action’
With the accord set to become operational next year, it had been hoped COP 25 would show the world that governments would be moved by protests, irrefutable science, and deadly storms and wildfires that marked 2019 to redouble their efforts.
But greater ambition—how far each country is willing to slash carbon emissions or assist less wealthy peers to do likewise—has largely failed to materialise.
Veteran observers of UN climate talks were stunned by the state of play.
“Never have I seen such a disconnect between what the science requires and what the climate negotiations are delivering in terms of meaningful action,” said Alden Meyer, director of strategy and policy at the Union of Concerned Scientists and a 28-year veteran of the climate process.
“Most of the world’s biggest emitting countries are missing in action and resisting calls to raise their ambition.”
The push for a strengthening of voluntary carbon cutting plans is led by small-island and least-developed states, along with the European Union.
These have called out nations they see as blocking consensus for all countries to step up, notably the United States, Australia and Saudi Arabia.

“Most of the world’s biggest emitting countries are missing in action and resisting calls to raise their ambition,” US analyst Alden Meyer said
China and India, the world’s No. 1 and No. 4 carbon emitters, made it clear they see no need to improve on their current emissions reduction plans, which run to 2030.
These emerging giants chose instead to emphasise the historical responsibility of rich nations to lead the way and provide financing to poor countries.
“Major players who needed to deliver in Madrid did not live up to expectations,” said Laurence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation and, as France top negotiator, a main architect of the Paris Agreement.
“But thanks to a progressive alliance of small island states, European, African and Latin American countries, we obtained the best possible outcome, against the will of big polluters.”
‘Loss and damage’
The summit was also meant to finalise a chapter on carbon markets in the Paris rulebook.
Some nations, notably Brazil and Australia, want to count carbon credits accumulated under a previous climate deal as part of their commitments under the Paris goals.
Discussions over markets ended in impasse Sunday and the issue will to be handed over to next year’s COP 26 in Glasgow.

The COP 25 summit—moved at the last minute from original host Chile due to unrest—at times teetered on the brink of collapse
The US, which is leaving the Paris deal next year, was accused of playing spoiler on a number of issues vital to climate-vulnerable nations.
This included so-called “loss and damage” funding to help disaster-hit countries repair and rebuild.
“The US has not come here in good faith,” said Harjeet Singh, climate lead with charity ActionAid.
“They continue to block the world’s efforts to help people whose lives have been turned upside down by climate change.”
Even if all countries implement their current plans under Paris, Earth is on course to warm more than 3C by 2100.
The failure to get the rulebook finalised in Madrid mean all eyes will be on Glasgow 2020—when the true Paris deal deadline falls.
“We must all act quickly, working in partnership to decarbonise our economies and adapt to the impact of climate change,” Archie Young, Britain’s Head of International Climate Change Negotiations.

United Nations, New York City - As the Climate Action Summit wrapped up at the United Nations in New York City on Monday, environmental activists almost universally concluded that not enough had been done to stop global warming and stem the climate crisis. Despite some significant commitments from small and medium-sized countries to limit emissions - and a few other notable announcements - the long-heralded gathering lacked any big moves by major nations. A total of 66 countries enhanced their national pledges to curtail greenhouse gas pollution, but those states represented barely one-fifteenth of world emissions. French President Emanuel Macron said in his address that the European Union would work towards more ambitious targets by early next year, and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that his country was striving for an unprecedented amount of renewable energy. "For the most part, world leaders did not deliver what was needed in New York today," said Greenpeace International's Executive Director Jennifer Morgan.  "We saw millions of people pour on to the streets on Friday, making it clear they will no longer accept apathy, excuses and inaction from weak political leaders incapable of standing up," Morgan added. She said it is "time to address corporate power and the hold it has over politics" and it is "time to stare down the fossil fuel industry and the banks that finance them, challenge their suffocating omnipresence and demand they take responsibility for the human rights impacts of the climate crisis." 'Running out of time' Helen Mountford, the vice president for climate and economics at the World Resources Institute, said that the growing demand for action has resulted in a flurry of private-sector and investor actions. While she said there was a lack of "climate leadership" from many of the biggest emitters, on a call with reporters, she praised the "realisation of the need to shift to a low-carbon economy". She said Russia had just announced its ratification of the 2016 Paris Agreement, and noted that "30 countries, 22 states and 31 corporates have committed to powering past coal". But Oxfam International Executive Director Winnie Byanyima said the accomplishments fell short. "Good intentions and recycled commitments will not protect the millions of people on the front lines of the climate crisis," said Byanyima. "This largely disappointing set of outcomes from the Climate Action Summit raises the stakes even higher for the upcoming COP25 and 2020, when leaders have another chance," she added.  "We cannot keep pushing these decisions down the road. We are running out of time," she said, adding that "the young climate leaders have made it clear that they will not stop until they see action." Shortcomings on Monday were blamed on national politics that prevented some countries from moving forward. Laurence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation, said at a press briefing, "You cannot be on track for 2050 if you don't do a number of things immediately ... at the domestic level to say what trajectories the countries can take." Tubiana complimented the "connections between governments and progressive activists". "This is a win," she told Al Jazeera. "The UN secretary-general was so clear, so courageous in historically demanding what is needed - and not compromising," she added. "That is a new thing in the UN system. It sets the bar ... for some countries and companies and cities." 'A tectonic shift' But many climate advocates said that governments were simply not acting at the level necessary for dealing with the climate emergency. "World leaders say they know 'our house is on fire', but they are adding more fuel to the flames," said May Boeve, the executive director of 350.org. Despite this, Boeve said that "over the last few months, there has been a tectonic shift in climate politics." "The climate strikes are having an impact," she said. "Momentum is on our side and what we're seeing today is politicians stumbling over themselves to catch up." Student climate strikers took to the streets on Friday in more than 4,500 locations around the world [Ben Piven/Al Jazeera] She pointed to protests this morning in Washington, DC, as well as ongoing actions this week across the US and Europe. Boeve also said that protests next Friday would occur in Canada, Spain, Italy, New Zealand and other countries. Other groups also plan to hold actions this week centred on climate. On Tuesday, a delegation from Brazil, supported by Amazon Watch, is expected deliver a petition with nearly 240,000 signatures to the headquarters of BlackRock - the world's largest fund manager - to protest the company's investment in industries contributing to deforestation of the Amazon, as well as the policies of Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro. And while heads of state meet on Tuesday and Wednesday at the General Assembly and Sustainable Development Goals Summit, dozens of activists and civil society organisations are set to hold a parallel People's Assembly to demand world leaders take urgent action on climate justice and inequality. Harjeet Singh, ActionAid's global lead on climate change, said Monday's "summit was supposed to be a turning point, but we have seen an exceptional lack of commitment from the biggest and richest polluting countries that continue to take trivial measures towards solving a life or death crisis." Singh added, "the countries that have responded with the most concrete actions are the ones most vulnerable to climate impacts."

Why do we need feminism
Feminists are not angry lesbians who hate men. Feminists do not believe women are better than men, or that women deserve special privileges. They do not believe women are victims.
In order to be considered a feminist, you only need to be on board with one idea: All humans, male and female, should have equal political, economic and social rights.
Although more and more people are beginning to understand the true definition of feminism and openly identifying with it, there has always been a negative stigma attached to it. Part of this problem is the way our media sensationalizes things, trying to pass the most radical and extreme versions as the standard which, in this case, depicts a feminist as a man-hater who hates lipstick, crinkles her nose at stay-at-home moms, and unapologetically supports abortions on demand.
Women are catcalled and harassed on the street A disturbing reality of being a woman is that you’re gonna get cat called at least several times in your life (if not, as many women experience it, daily). This is a disgusting result of the way in which women’s bodies are talked about (“grab ‘em by the pussy”), leered at, and used for the viewing pleasure of men. Anyway, here are the stats: A 2014 survey of women in the US found that 65% had experienced some kind of street harassment, 23% had been sexually touched, and 20% had been followed. According to a 2016 ActionAid survey, 79% of women living in cities in India, 86% in Thailand, and 89% in Brazil have been subjected to harassment or violence in public, as had two-thirds of women in London, UK.
Sexual harassment is also common in the workplace and at school According to a 2011 study by the United Nations, between 40 and 50 percent of women in European Union countries experience sexual harassment and unwanted physical contact in the workplace. The same study states that 83 percent of girls in the US ages 12 to 16 experience some form of sexual harassment in public schools.
Societal expectations have raised women to believe that a large percentage of their worth is determined by their appearance Heck no! But it’s hard not to believe this when it’s reinforced everyday through the media we consume, and results in women, from a young age, disliking their bodies: 81% of ten year old girls are afraid of getting fat, and 46% of 9-11 year olds say that they are “sometimes” or “often” on diets.
Male privilege is alive and well If that statement makes the men in your life mad, try to remind them that having privilege (any kind of identity privilege) doesn’t mean they don’t work hard or experience unfairness, and doesn’t mean they have to live in a state of constant guilt. And then kindly direct them to these 3 helpful resources: 1.) 160+ examples of male privilege in everyday life 2.) Explaining privilege to someone who doesn’t know what that is 3.) Trans men explain male privilege
