La France participera à la prochaine Coupe de l’America avec un bateau hors-norme, qui pourra littéralement voler au dessus de l’eau. Mais est-ce encore de la Voile ? L’AC75, le dernier bateau de la France, qui participera à la prochaine Coupe de l’America a concourru ce weekend à un meeting aérien dans la région parisienne et a impressionné son petit monde.

Fabriqué grâce à un partenariat entre le ministère de l’armée de l’air, de l’armée de mer et l’équipe du film Avatar 2, LA voie de l’eau, il vole à plus de 100 km/h au dessus de l’eau.

« Bien sûr, pour des questions de réglementations qui nous contraignent à l’excès, nous sommes obligés de garder un contact avec l’eau via le foil, mais nous pourrions tout à fait voler à des altitudes supérieures » déclarait Quentin Delapierre, le barreur du voilier, qui est également titulaire d’un brevet de pilote de l’air

A la question des chances de victoires françaises, Quentin nous a répondu « 100% de chance. La victoire ne peut pas nous échapper, même face aux néo-zélandais, dernier vainqueur de la Coupe de l’America. Nous sommes équipés en dernier recours de canons Caesar qui peuvent nous permettre de détruire les adversaires à plus de 5000 yards ».

As a kid, Erica Dawson never owned one of those annoying little Tamagotchi digital pets. As a teen, she wasn’t the slightest bit interested in home video games and wasn’t addicted to playing Angry Birds on her phone, either.

But now, on the cusp of entering her 30s, Dawson has become a bit of a gamer.

She’s had to – to earn her place on New Zealand’s first all-women’s America’s Cup crew.

“I’ll be honest, I never thought I’d become a gamer. I’ve had to adopt it,” the Olympic sailor says.

Virtual sailing is quickly becoming second nature to Dawson, one of five Kiwi sailors representing Emirates Team New Zealand in the Women’s America’s Cup in Barcelona later this year.

Sailing an AC40, the foiling monohull to be used in the women’s and youth Cup regattas, is acutely different to any other yacht Dawson has sailed.

Right now, she’s in Europe, preparing for her second Olympic Games (in 100 days time) with sailing partner Micah Wilkinson, on the Nacra 17 foiling catamaran.

Dawson’s role on board is physical – trimming the sails, running up and down the side of the boat while it’s up on the foiling daggerboards, trying to keep it flying level. Her hands are calloused and sometimes bleeding after a day on the water.

Her role as a trimmer on the AC40 is, in comparison, much more sedate. It’s still sailing on a knife edge – requiring the four crew on board to be highly coordinated, accurate and alert – but they’re all tucked inside the hull for the entirety of a race.  

Grinders have been replaced by battery power, and an autopilot control system maintains stable flight.

Eliza Rose has teamed up with the always amazing Calvin Harris for a jam that you just can’t resist. “Body Moving” (Epic) is the latest collaboration spear headed by the genius that is Calvin Harris. There may just be another Vegas residency in the works once this takes off. Make sure to give it that love and attention it so deserves. Shinedown is back at the format and that’s always a very good thing indeed. “A Symptom Of Being Human” (Atlantic) is really quite something and deserves all the attention that radio has to offer. I believe it’s one of the best songs out there at the format & get this one ready.  Keyvous has a solid winner in “Catch A Wave” (Street People) that radio just loves. April Diamond and her new “Feels So Good” (Del Oro) is totally “on fire”. We’re all loving the teaming of Jelly Roll & Lainey Wilson. Read the full article

The group of 8 Youth Emirates Team New Zealand hopefuls undertook a busy four day schedule embarking on a steep learning curve encompassing the technical systems and software required to sail the AC40 as well as race training and simulation on the Emirates Team New Zealand simulator.

The 8 trialling sailors at the base are an impressive line-up of world and national champions across a number of different classes.

Leading the trials and selection process is  Emirates Team New Zealand’s Josh Junior now in his 3rd America’s Cup campaign, having joined in 2016 as a young Olympic class sailor.

“I was lucky enough to join the team as a young sailor, similar to these guys, so I know what an amazing opportunity it is for these guys and girls, but also how daunting it can be. So we are throwing them in the deep end a bit, but that is all part of the challenge.” Said Junior.

Elise Beavis, also helping with the selection process explains what the week has been about.

“We've got our group of shortlisted sailors and they're running through a whole lot of different activities, such as sailing on the game, learning to use some of our in-house tools and their progression through the week has been incredible.”

The week wasn’t just about the individual, but assessing personalities and how they work collectively and the vitally important team environment

“They’ve got to be in sync with each other. They need to communicate well, I think those are big areas where they’re learning heaps.” said Elise Beavis.
