Never Took The Time (To Forgot) part 4.1 : With a Capital 'P'
Part 4.2 (Hey Dingus? Idk, the title for that one is up in the air.) will be up as soon as I have it somewhere I like (doing a different character's pov instead of Hop so it's giving me some trouble). Felt really bad that I hadn't updated in a while and this one was getting longer than I expected and I hadn't even gotten Robin really talking yet so... Happy Valentine's Day?
Part 1 (Hop Fucks Up), Part 2 (Pride and Prejudices: Joyce Edition), Part 3 (One of Us)
Family Video and the Arcade were two of the few businesses still operating after the inter-dimensional earthquakes that had tried tearing their town to pieces. Hop knew the kid who used to run the place for his uncle, Keith, had split town with his folks (said uncle in tow) leaving the store and arcade in the care of whatever employees had been willing to stay on payroll while the world fell apart.
He watches as Harrington's (more banged up than never remembers it being) car stops in front of the video store, parked parallel to the curb across at least 3 parking spots, as a wildly gesticulating Robin rolls herself out of the idling vehicle, jabbering loud enough that Hop can hear her voice from down the block. With most cars owned by the folks of Hawkins being commandeered by Owens' government goons to fill the gaps left by lost military vehicles it doesn't much matter but Hop can't help a bit of an eye roll at the kid's audacity.
But then again, he catches himself thinking, Steve was one of the only 'civilians' in-the-know and was well-known for carting around and protecting proven assets to the War Of The Worlds shitshow going on. So was there really an issue if the kid was one of the only cars on the road anyway and because he was even more read-in on the situation than even local law enforcement? If he was not only transporting and protecting people the government had a vested interest in but had proven himself more effective than even Hop and Joyce in wrangling the kids who had basically been saving the world for the last 4 years? If he kept them safe and out of harm's way in the thick of it but also kept them entertained and out from underfoot during the downtime?
Hell, the kid being one of the only employees left at some of the last businesses in town these brats would have any interest in almost guarantees the whole lot of them are continuously stocked in movies, snacks and quarters to distract them from even the most world shaking of calamities.
It hadn't occurred to him until just now what it meant for The Party that Steve and Robin seemed to be the only ones willing to hang around behind the counter at the arcade and sell and rent movies to shell-shocked townsfolk and tight-lipped government goons alike. Fuck, Lucas and Mike were right. He was an asshole.
He's pulled out of the slow spiral of realizing Mike Wheeler of all people had been right about something by Steve hollering one last "Love you, Bobby!" at a grinning and waving Buckley as she flung open the video store door and stumbled inside. He waits for the car and it's driver to round the corner before he gets out of his own government-issued station wagon. Fuck but he missed his truck.
"Welcome to Family Video, I literally just got here so you're gonna have to give me a minute before I can help you."
"I'm uh, I'm not here for a movie." He can tell she recognizes his voice (and it's a little impressive how quickly she clocks him since he's spoken only a couple words anywhere near her maybe twice in his memory. Girl has a good ear) from the way her entire body stills for a split second before whirling back into the hurricane of motion he's come to associate with her.
"Afraid we've only got movies round here, officer. You want any other medium of entertainment I'd suggest the arcade or the distribution yard." She's still not looking at him, hands busy shuffling papers and flipping open VHS cases. "Sorry, guess we'll have to catch up another time."
Hop sighs, running a hand over the short growth he's slowly getting used to again. He'd almost shaved it down again but El had been so happy when she'd realized they were growing out at about the same rate. He couldn't ever say no to her.
"Look, I know you don't like me. And it has been brought to my attention just how much I fucking earned that. But I- I need your help here, to fix it."
The flurry of movement doesn't stop but it's tighter, she's fiddling with something shoved up her shirt sleeve and tapping at the casing of a button connected to a wire leading into her green vest. Bright blue eyes are focused on him and he's almost reminded of the no-nonsense look Nancy Wheeler gets whenever they're faced with the world ending, but the girl in front of him is colder. He has no doubts that where Nancy Wheeler would tear down giants for what she believed is right, Robin Buckley would burn the world if it meant saving her people.
"Fine. He'll be back from his patrol-" He didn't remember assigning a patrol schedule and he's not sure if this is Steve's own initiative or if he's been roped into something by Owens' people. "in about twenty minutes. You have fifteen. Now why should I help you?"

BoTW Theory: The Champions were unarmed when the Blights attacked
Losing my mind I just realised this detail in BoTW and I had to share it. Maybe this has already been pointed out, but I wanted to dive into it. In Memory 15 “Return of Calamity Ganon,” none of the champions are shown with their weapons, except for Link.
Tumblr media
See, no weapons.
Tumblr media
And when Revali flies up to get a better look at the Calamity, we can see he doesn’t have his Great Eagle Bow.
Tumblr media
The only one with a visible weapon is Link, who has the Master Sword.
We can assume that the champions headed straight to their divine beasts while Link and Zelda headed to the castle. Daruk clearly orders all of the champions to immediately head towards their Divine Beasts.
Tumblr media
And really, if you think about it, the original plan was for the champions to strike Ganon with their Divine Beasts, they’d have no reason to think they’d need their weapons, because the Champions themselves were never meant to face off with Ganon directly.
Then there is also the fact that each Champion’s respective villages has kept their Champion’s weapons in a chest for 100 years after the Calamity. This is even though no one had set foot on any of the Divine Beasts in 100 years, so if the champions DID have their weapons on them during the battle, how would it be possible for each champion’s race to have their weapons in their possession? And they couldn’t have been retrieved after Link freed the Divine Beast, because Teba makes a comment that he is not strong enough to use the Great Eagle Bow without it slowing down his flight. I don’t exactly buy the idea that Teba, while injured, would have immediately tried the Great Eagle Bow the second Vah Medoh was freed. He most likely did so at some point before freeing the Divine Beast with Link.
We know from BoTW that each divine beasts has chests containing weapons that the champions could have potentially used to defend themselves, but they are all spread out throughout the divine beasts, so it certainly would have been difficult for them to get their hands on any weapons even when they did realise they were under attack.
The only weapons onboard each divine beast were:
Vah Medoh
Tumblr media
5x Bomb Arrows
10x Ice Arrows
1x Knights Bow
Even the best archer in Hyrule (which Revali canonically was) would not be able to defeat Windblight with that.
Vah Naboris
Tumblr media
1x Knights Bow
1x Knights Shield
The only thing Urbosa would be able to use here would be the shield, she’d still have her fury, sure, but that’s hardly a fair fight. And even if she knew how to use a bow (which there is no canonical basis that she does) there weren’t any arrows aboard Vah Naboris anyway.
Vah Ruta
Tumblr media
10x Fire Arrows
10x Ice Arrows
1x Knights Halberd
The only weapon Mipha could even use here is the Knights Halberd. She’d have no use for arrows without a bow, and same thing with Urbosa, we have no idea if Mipha knows how to use a bow anyway. I should also mention that the halberd is in quite a difficult place to get to, right at the top of the Divine Beast. So this really wasn’t a fair fight for poor Mipha.
Vah Rudania
Tumblr media
1x DragonBone Boko Club
2x Knights Bows
10x Arrows (in two separate chests, so 2 chests each with 5 arrows)
5x Ice Arrows
Nothing here would be particularly useful for Daruk. The Boko club is made out of wood, so it would catch on fire. And I don’t think Daruk would even be able to hold the Knights Bow, it would be too small for him even if he knew how to use a bow (which again, who knows if he does or doesn’t). Daruk seems to have to worst luck out of everyone.
And yeah maybe there were other weapons on the divine beasts that the champions did use, but my point is to illustrate that most of the weapons they had available to them were not ideal.
The sad part is that these chests were all unopened, so the champions likely didn’t even get a chance to defend themselves, they were taken completely by surprise.
It also puts into context that most of the champions make some kind of comment about their opponent fighting dirty, it literally wasn’t a fair fight.

LU age headcanons!!
Time: okay so of course i gotta start off with time. this guy (i’m pretty sure it’s canon) started his first adventure at 9 years old and i also headcanon he turned 10 sometime during that adventure. i think he’s currently in his mid to late-30s, probably like 35-37? however i think he has both the mentality of a teen and a 40 year old.
Warriors: i think during the war of eras he was 17-18 (enlisted in the military a year earlier maybe?) and is currently in his early/mid twenties, like 23-25.
Twilight: ngl when i first saw a picture of him i genuinely thought he looked like a 16 year old in his little ordon clothes so because of that im going to say he started his first adventure like a month before he turned 17 and turned 18 soon after. currently i headcanon him around 21-23 years old.
Sky: i think sky started probably around 17-18 years old because he was graduating (i think?) or becoming a senior knight at the start of his adventure. now i wanna headcanon him at about 21 years old, though i could also see him at like 19-20.
Hyrule: for his first adventure in headcanon him at 12 years old. it just fits for me. now his age has varied the most since i first got into lu. i used to headcanon him as the second youngest at like 15 years old, but i read some fics and headcanons that had him older than that and i think that it would be halarious with everyone just thinking he’s like 15-16 and he’s sitting there a full grown adult. so now i headcanon him being like 16-18/19.
Wild: wild when he first picked up the master sword was 12 (pretty sure this is canon) and when i first played botw i thought he was probably around 16 during the memories, but when calamity struck he had just turned 17 a few months ago. anyways now he’s 117 but like 17 mentally. or like 2 if you see it from when he probably came out of the shrine.
Legend: ah yes my favorite. i’ve seen him from his starting adventure range from 5/7 to 9-11 but i think he was 9 when he started his adventure and turned 10 a few months into his adventure. for his age now, when i was first introduced into the fandom i saw a lot of people thinking he was about 19 but i had seen some people think he was 21 or older than twilight so i didn’t really have a set age until i read the last few comics and headcanons people had. anyway i headcanon him as 16-17 years old currently. i love triple threat just being a trio all near the same age.
Four: when he started i wanna say about 8/9 because he could still see the minish (i love the art style for that game it’s so cute) and now i could honestly see him as a mature 16 year old or a 20 year old. yeah like no in between.
Wind: when he started he was 12 and now he’s nearly 14 (ngl i read it wrong in the comic and for the longest time thought he was already 14 ㅠㅠ)

some thoughts for the holly jackson fandom
so, some people have been wondering about when the agggtm show might be coming out and i've been thinking *deeply* about it. also, the universe is laughing at me, because i had an urge to check ig last night, and holly had posted a reel joking about everyone wanting to know when the trailer is coming out, which makes me think that she knows that everyone is (im)patiently waiting, but it might be still be a hot minute before we get anything. anyway, these are my thoughts. this is all speculation, with a little bit of logic, so don't take this as gospel
on the show's release
first things first: a couple of weeks ago, holly reposted a reel from one of the bbc accounts on her ig story where we got our first look at pip (she's in a dark room with lots of pink and blue led lights, i think this could be from the calamity party). this reel was a montage of clips, that you also see on tv that the bbc show during the holiday period to advertise shows coming out in the new year. from memory, these are usually for shows that are coming out in the first half of the year, so the show might come out in the spring, like april
why april? well, if you've read the book then you might remember that it all starts in april (the andie & sal case happens in april 2012), so if the show came out then, it would be a neat tie-in to the book
another reason why i think it could be april is because of another tv show: heartstopper
obviously, there are differences, hs is a netflix show, so is available to watch all over the world, agggtm is made by bbc so is only going to be available to watch in the uk (and i think also the us). it may become available to stream elsewhere later on, but that's another story
anyway, hs and agggtm are both ya book-to-tv show adaptations set in britain. hs had eight episodes per season with episodes being roughly 30 minutes each. agggtm is going to have six episodes, roughly 45 minutes each. so hs totals around 4 hours of content, agggtm will have 4 and a half hours of content in total. pretty similar
i did some further research (a lot of scrolling through instagram) to try and calculate when we might get some content. the hs ig account posted some stills on 1 march, just giving a first look at the main characters
on 16 march, they released some more stills, with some of the other characters, and also released the teaser trailer later that day
the full trailer came out 13 april, and the show came out april 22
sooooo, this is all speculation, and bbc will probably have different ideas from netflix to promote their show, but if the dates are similar and agggtm were to come out in late april like heartstopper (again, this would put it around the dates of the andie & sal case from the book), but i reckon we could maybe expect content to start dropping in march. we will see.
a final thought, which i'd forgotten earlier: if the show is successful, which i think it will be, then it would probably get renewed for a second season, then they'd want to film over the summer (the majority of events in ggbb happen in april/may, after the andie & sal memorial, which happens around the six-year anniversary of their deaths, which happened in, oh yeah, april)
some other thoughts:
holly posted on her ig grid a few days ago, mentioning stuff that will be happening this year, and i have a couple of ideas about that
her new book, the reappearance of rachel price is coming out on 2 april (this made me wonder if the show would come out later so that one isn't overshadowing the other, but the people deciding when a book is published and when a tv show comes out are going to be two different groups of people, and if i'm right with my guess, then start of the month and end of the month releases gives trorp enough time to get the hype it deserves)
book tour for trorp/holly doing appearances at book festivals this year. holly and her books are popular, and this popularity is probably going to increase after the show comes out, so i could see this being pretty likely
lastly, and there is no real evidence to suggest this, but it could happen: film adaptation of five survive. i'm not the first to say this, but it would be a great thriller, and as people have joked, would be pretty low-budget given that most of the action happens in an rv with just six people. if we do get this though, it would be probably be much later in the year

This is a entry for @zelinktines24 event day 20: Diary. I was going to use Zelda’s Diary from Breath of the Wild, but I realized that it would be unoriginal, so I made a diary of Link and Zelda learning of the struggle of past heroes which Zelda write down.
HYRULE DAY 2/19....
‘Bit by bit, I’ve gotten Link to open up to me, and he tell me why he so quiet when he was a bit of a chatterbox in her youth. Since he pull the sword out when he was twelve years old and the ceremony in the castle that was hold in his honor, Link was put through training to be at his peak and he was discouraged in seeing his destiny as a soft of childish game, and he couldn’t make any friends among the knights, whose look at him with envy, not respect or kindness as he thought he would have just like the heroes of the past. It could be those knights wanted to be the one with the glory of being the hero and be praise by all of Hyrule. On some nights, Link would hear a voice in his sleep that he thought he was thinking up because of his stress as it sound like a woman voice, maybe his own mother, trying to comfort him that the heroes went through things similar to what he going through. Our talk about the sword made Link realized that the voice he has been hearing is the sword itself. In the meantime, Link feels it necessary to be silent and never show any emotion and I realized that he was cursed with the burden of saving Hyrule just like I have. I always believed him to be simply a gifted person who had never faced a day of hardship, but I realized how wrong I was and I put his childish anger out at him, which end up making things wrong for Link’s mindset as it made him wonder why most of Hyrule Knights and princess hate him.’
‘Link told me of what the sword told him about its, or rather her, past masters and their struggles, which the legends didn’t show. The sword first master struggles with Hylia putting her faith on him and a childhood friend he loved to defeat a powerful demon king when he was a newly graduated knight. The Hero of Time, one of the most famous hero in Hyrule legends, lost a father figure when he was nine years old and accidentally open a door to great power to a king of evil, brining a decade of darkness to Hyrule until he come to save it, but he was mentally scar for the horrors that the king of evil did on Hyrule. The successors of the Hero of Time, the Hero of the Wind and the Hero of Twilight, worry about being the legend that he was while they only started their quest to rescue a younger sibling whose was taken from them by monsters, and a woman they loved risk their life to help save him from the king of evil, whose first see them as weak copies of the Hero of Time. A hero saved the princess of his era from a corrupted noble whose made him a outlaw in Hyrule, which made his quest to stop the evil noble harder and give him some self doubt about other people that he left Hyrule after his quest. A hero whose raise in the aftermath of the Imprisoning War struggles with his destiny and his growing feelings for Princess Zelda as they bond over the lost of their parents. Even the hero whose fought Calamity Ganon centuries ago with the Guardians that are being unearthed now struggles with the demons of the king to make him and his daughter, the Princess Zelda of that time, read to face Ganon. It was thanks to the Guardians and the champions at that era which allow both the hero and Princess Zelda to seal Calamity Ganon away, but I wonder if history is going to repeat itself when our battle against Calamity Ganon come.’
‘Anyway, I was so absorbed with my own problems that I failed to see his problems. I start to feel a soul similar to mine, one whose was rob of a childhood just so Hyrule would have a figure to defend itself. I wish for us to share our demons more, and maybe we will have a happy ending when all of this is over with.’

Zelink plot bunnies I'm never going to write....
Tumblr media
AU-ish: Link has an identical twin. Said twin holds the master sword and people love him (always have). However, twin dies one day and so Link takes up the sword in his place because the sword only lets Link hold it. Everyone doesn't really take to Link and are actually kind of mean to him because they dont believe he'll be able to save them.... plot twist, either twin pulled the sword because the sword can't tell them apart since they're identical or twin stole the sword from Link who really pulled it because twin wanted the attention. Link is supposed to be the real hero that holds the sword.
They're older of course, probably years later... but Zelda finds out she's pregnant and doesn't want it because she doesn't want to carry on the bloodline and subject a future child to fight the enemy. Link spends the time trying to convince her fate would have intervened anyway and to just enjoy the now (or something along those lines).
Maybe AOC plotline: After defeating the calamity Link is sent to Hebra as his post for a couple years. One year he's called back to the castle and to bring the sword with because there's going to be some celebration (defeat of the calamity or whatever). Zelda sees him in the training yard, they haven't been in touch since Link left, but no one's really seen much of Zelda since either as the King has become really cruel..... long story short, they sneak to see each other. The sword is left in the throne room on display for the celebration. But in reality it was to separate Link from it as the King is possessed by Ganon (or whatever evil) since he really died that day when the calamity showed up in AOC (or is just possessed, whatever you want). He's just been biding his time and tearing the 2 that could defeat him down.
I may update this post as I think of more

I couldn’t sleep, started thinking about totk again.
what happened to the sheikah tech? Well, what if they literally faded away? Like all the tech was under a stasis effect for 10000 years, which broke when ganon was defeated. And like the shrine monks, it all blew away in green smoke. then another thought hit me, how would Zelda react to that? Losing her family, friends, kingdom, and then her main interest? And then I wrote an outline. I’m not even a writer how did that happen?
Immediatly after the calamity
The master sword is returned to the pedestal in the lost woods to rest. It’s work finished hopefully for good.
The spirits of the king, mipha, daruk, revali, and urbosa pass on.
The divine beasts go inert.
After a 2 month recovery period, link and Zelda begin to investigate the divine beasts, starting with vah rudania.
However, try as she might Zelda simply cannot figure out what’s wrong with it. With any of them! She even attempts to have yunobo activate the beast, which doesn’t work (doing wonders for poor yunobo’s self esteem). The bronze stone alloy the divine beasts, and in fact all ancient sheikah technology are made of has started to turn grey.
Then it get worse. 3 months later the shrines and towers, once blue, maybe orange, shut down. Zelda is beginning to worry, as she frantically tries everything she can think of to try and revive the technology, hindered when the shiekah slate itself one day shuts down. The technology slowly deteriorates until one day, half a year since the the defeat of the calamity, the technology, the beasts, the shrines, the towers, simply fade away in a matter link notices similar to the monks link had met in the shrines.
Zelda is inconsolable. She hardly ever leaves links house. She won’t eat. Link is worried. He tries anything he can think of to lift her spirits, one day he packs their things and drags Zelda to Faron to see the zonai ruins. And suddenly Zelda is alive again. Something to research! Something new!
She throws herself entirely into this new topic, and it’s like nothing had ever happened.
1 year after the calamity, a blood moon occurs. The people hold their breath but ganon himself doesn’t return, simply his monsters. The blood moon itself had long proven itself an annual routine, long before the calamity, easily dealt with by the royal army, but it’s frequency hadincreased to (idk let’s say) once every three full moons. (Weee headcanons! But I mean like, ganon wasn’t truly dead was he? That was just a bunch of sentient gloom/malice that leaked from rauru’s seal. Makes sense the blood moon would plague the land long before calamity ganon attacked.)
However, where before the destruction of the royal army combined with the greater frequency of the moon meant that hyrule never had a chance to try and get ahead of the problem, this time was different. In response to the reappearance of monsters a new group is formed, aptly naming themselves the monster hunters. Three squads of brave hyruleans willing to risk their lives to prevent the monsters from retaking hyrule.
Link joins them, being the greatest soldier in all the land, and while he visits Zelda constanly his absence from day to day life lead the people of hateno village to forget his face.
Speaking of Zelda, she has not been idle. The blood moon showed her something too, that the cycle of calamity is not finished, someday ganon will return. With no sheikah technology to aid them, Zelda fears how the next generation will fare. In an attempt to find anything she can leave to that future generation, Zelda founds the zonai research team, to investigate the ruins, research the zonai, in hopes of maybe discovering something useful (of course she also just plain wanted to do that anyway, the moon simply gave her the “selfless” motive)
The children of hateno village are starstruck by her passion and speeches, and Zelda finds herself lecturing to just as many children as scholars. So Zelda hires the newly renamed Hudson construction, Bolton having retired, to build a schoolhouse for the children.
Meanwhile Purah and Robbie haven’t been idle. 4 years after the calamity they present Zelda with a prototype of something they’re calling “The Purah pad”, a name which Robbie seems reluctant to commit to.
Right now it only has the camera, but Purah promises one day it’ll have map functionality, as well as teleportation!
Purah just needs to set up relay towers to provide it with the topographical map data.
Having done such a good job with the schoolhouse, zelda reccomends Hudson construction, who begins work on them straight away.
5 years have passed. Half of the “skyview towers” as Purah is calling them, have been built. Zelda wishes to begin resettling central hyrule, and once again hires Hudson construction to rebuild castle town itself.
They begin by setting up a base around the old sacred grounds ruins, surrounding the remains of a secret hidden passage that Zelda is able to unlock. They call it lookout landing. Purah opts to move there herself, in order to more efficently survey they construction of her towers from a more, central, locale.
6 years since the calamity. Hudson construction workers in castle town are falling Ill. The cause seems to be a strange airborne fog reminiscent of the malice of calamity ganon, emanating from caverns under hyrule castle, ones that Zelda’s father had said had been forbidden since before the castle itself had even been built.
Acting on a hunch, link and Zelda reclaim the master sword from the lost woods, and set off for the caverns underneath hyrule castle.

hi! i loved ur calamity trio x reader u did with the reader escaping, could u possibly do a part 2 where the trio finds the reader again? ty!
Hii! And sure i was hoping someone would ask for a part two-
Calamity trio finding reader after them escaping
Tw: kidnapping, attempted suicide, all the yandere stuff you’d expect
I don’t know how to add a link to part one 😢 so your gonna have to swipe to find it but i only made it yesterday so it isn’t that far down-
Tumblr media
You sighed puffing a bit of air out of your mouth
It sure is cold out here…..
It’s been 4 months at best ever since your escape and you’ve been doing kinda well
“Kinda” was because you were still in hiding you couldn’t see your family all thanks to three teenage girls? Well atleast that’s what everyone would think…..i mean those three teenage girls DID kidnap and had a lust for you-
I mean atleast you have your friends-
I mean sure they can’t always see you as there trying to protect themselves too since who knows what the girls are doing
Currently you were outside on a walk in the woods for some dumb reason and not in hiding, stupid? You know but it was only for a minute it was pretty close the hideout and besides you practically were gonna die at some point besides it was only meant to be a short walk i mean that walk did turn to you walking into a unfamiliar part of the woods you didn’t realise how lost in your thought you were till-
“I really hope we find them-oh no! Imagine if there dead?!”
“There not dead Marcy….it’s clear we underestimated them, they clearly think there stronger then they are….”
“Yeah but they think there stronger then they are imagine if there hurt-“
Those voices
You didn’t even realise how close they were you ran behind a tree holding a branch not like it’d be much help but you were desperate
“I need to get out of here…”
You thought in your head as you silently tried to find a better hiding spot while also trying to keep track on how close there voices got-
You winced at the crunched leaves you stepped but stopped in your place with your heart pounding so hard you thought it would of pounded out your chest
“Huh?”
“What?”
“I heard something it sounded like something or maybe…..someone?”
“It was probably just a stupid animal, we don’t have time for this”
“I think Marcy might be right i heard it too….”
Oh god
“Really? Let’s see, hey! Whoever you are you can come out we know your there!”
You tried your best not to make a sound which was barely working as your chest was pounding and your face was burning due to the high blood pressure and stress
Don’t make a sound don’t make a sound don’t make a sound-
“See? No reply it was probably just a squirrel or something”
Oh thank god that’s over with
You didn’t realise a familiar scent of perfume the girl was coming close to you
“Then why are you checking?”
“Just incase!”
“I mean maybe it could be an animal but-“
“S/O?!”
“What?”
“Wait what?!”
“Oh god oh god”
You tried to run but Sasha held a tight firm grip onto you
“Let go of me-“
You then felt another pair of arms hug you from behind
“Oh S/O we’re so happy we found you!! You really scared us this time”
“Guys, give her some space it’s clear those “friends” probably manipulated her or something”
“Yeah what you did was really reckless s/o, we’ve always warned you not to trust them i guess you really do need our watch on you”
You couldn’t speak you didn’t know what to do maybe if you were lucky some animal would come and distract them or something
“Aw she’s not speaking i missed hearing her voice…”
You would out found that line cute at least a couple years ago
“She’ll talk later it doesn’t matter since we found her, atleast those “friends” are dealt with-“
“W-What?! What did you do to them?”
“Aw your talking! Relax it was nothing now there took cared of for good!”
“It was nothing s/o, it’s not like we killed them all we know now is that they’ll never be bothering you or us again”
“No….no…”
“What were you doing in the woods anyway-“
“Ow-hey!”
You threw that branch you had on Sasha and made a run for it
You felt your heart pounding harder and harder to the point it literally was moving around
“S/o you can’t keep on running from us forever!”
You kept on running you didn’t know where you were going but you didn’t care you just wanted to get away from them
“S/O!!!!”
Big tw: attempted suicide if you don’t want to read that I’ll write down when it’s over
You ended up reaching a dead end looking behind you was the three girls getting closer to you you noticed a piece of glass on the floor and held it to your throat
“S/o, don’t-“
“Stay back!! I’m sick of this life, why did it have to happen to me?!”
“S/o you don’t know what your saying!!”
“Just put it down and we can talk!”
“No! No more of that! I’m sick of this I’m sick of everything and it hurts ugh-“
After stabbing yourself with it you felt a ton of pain but maybe a bit of relief that it was finally over
The suicide part ended
You heard some muffled talking
“You think she’s okay?”
“Of course she’s not okay, she nearly died”
“Huh…”
“Wait I think she’s awake! S/o, we’re so glad your okay we thought you could of actually died!”
“What is this-“
You start coughing and then noticed your neck having a piece of cloth over it
“You shouldn’t talk so much your throat is still healing”
“What?”
You tried to move but then noticed your legs and arms tied up
“Hey!-what-“
“There’s no point in fighting it it’s tied pretty well actually”
“By yours truly!”
“Don’t worry it won’t be like this forever just until we learn to trust you won’t do something brutal like that again”
“No….no”
“So how do we celebrate this by us finding them?”
“Why don’t we watch that movie Marcy always used to put on?”
“Yes! Then we can take turns in cuddling s/o! This will be the greatest!”
“See s/o, you wanted to be away from this? Look on how much you need us”
I guess she’s right maybe you can’t escape from them
Ahhh-i hope you liked it! I don’t really know what to say here but have a good day/night!

TotK Impressions: Day 2
So I have an anxiety disorder, and money is a big trigger. I was lowkey expecting to have money-related intrusive thoughts for like, at least 3-5 days after buying Tears- despite knowing I could afford it- because that’s been my experience after moderate-to-big purchases. Sucks, but it happens.
I haven’t had any. I’m sure some of that is therapy but also the game is just that fucking good. I can see- and feel- the six year development time was not wasted. It is absolutely worth the money.
Okay, here are more impressions, and a mild Age of Calamity ~conspiracy~:
Dude the NPCS are SO MUCH FUN. Here’s a couple of my favorites so far:
Penn the Rito reporter! His design is so cute and I love his enthusiasm.
The people in the Castle Town hub are great, nice mix of BotW NPCs and new ones. The fact they were all so relieved to see Link alive was a nice touch. Also thank you devs for giving us a better home base.
I found a drummer who is part of a traveling band that performs at horse stables! Haven’t gone to Woodland to see them yet, but the fact they exist makes me VERY HAPPY!
The Sheikah elders arguing whether fighting offensively or defensively was great lol.
Some of them even react to the odder fusions! I fused a ring garland to a shield for the aesthetic
THE MONSTER HUNTING SQUADS. I LOVE THEM. WE’RE BROS 4EVER.
Okay regarding the monster hunter squads: I feel like maybe they were inspired by Age of Calamity? The UI for the fights is very similar to the ones in AoC. I do know they used the BotW engine to develop AoC, so it’s possible some code sharing happened. I have no proof, but it would be cool if AoC influenced TotK’s gameplay!
The Castle Town fort is great, I love that we have a more expansive homebase this time around. And the fact that everyone knew Link or knew of him was a nice bit of polish.
Speaking of homebases, yay the Hateno house is standing! I was a little disappointed it’s called Zelda’s House instead of Link & Zelda’s house, not gonna lie. But I know they’re trying to accommodate as many players as possible, and new players would just not be familiar with that sidequest. Plus, not every BotW player finished the house! I’m kinda glad they don’t assume tbh, and they left it open enough that older players can still assume Link is living there too.
The bit about Zelda staying in Hateno to help establish the first school is very sweet. Perfect bit of characterization for our researcher princess. I have a lowkey headcanon that Link is staying in Castle Town to head the surveys & reconstruction while Zelda works more on social program in Hateno, and they meet up as often as possible.
Okay back to Castle Town, I’m glad the giant telescope is more usable this time lol.
I looooove the Skyview Towers! The launch animation is so much fun, and I like the fact Purah reused the Sheikah tech to build them.
Although why did she reuse the Guardian legs specifically to HOLD DOWN LINK TO PREP HIM FOR LAUNCH. Girl that was unnecessary! You could have given him more warning!
I love her new design, of course. All the Sheikah designs I’ve seen have been A++.
When I got attacked by the walking trees for the first time I actually yelled “What the FUCK” out loud LMAO. I was NOT expecting to be attacking by the goddamn forests!
Horriblins also made me jump. But MAN their designs are SO COOL.
The monster designs in general have been top tier, give those designers a bonus because damn.
THE DEPTHS ARE SO FUCKING COOL. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. THE AESTHETIC, THE DIVE DOWN, THE PLANTS, THE CREATURES, THE POES!! POES ARE BACK!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH I WANNA BUILD A HOUSE DOWN THERE!
Also the running joke of Link startling people near the edge of the depth chasms is really charming, heh. Feral gremlin man is gonna feral gremlin.
Anyways I just got to Hateno last night, so I’m gonna bother more villagers and then maybe double back to Impa to start the obvious successor to the BotW memory quest. Or maybe I’ll go to Lurelin and beat up pirates. Or go back to Kakariko and dive into the big giant chasm that Naydra likes to fly into.
MAN it’s good to be back!!

Day 2 - bark- G - Cahsi + Vaile
Summary: Cahsi's first time meeting Vaile.
Cahsi had been wary of him, justifiably so, and downright terrified the first time they’d met.
The thing about Vaile was, he tried so, so hard to be intimidating and off-putting, but he really only succeeded with people who hadn’t gotten to know him beyond a cursory, skin-deep glance.
It’s the getting there that was the hard part.
Both of them were young and scrawny and full of so much rage and fear--a potent combination, the potential for inflicting so much hurt. She’d barely started adventuring at that point, had less control of her magic than him, his powers honed and refined from the pure desperation of survival. Hers obtained from books and boredom and a need to find purpose in life again.
She’d been outmatched, back then. And still, the humble adventurer found herself escaping death’s jaws. Where there was a will (and luck, and the mothercrystal’s blessing were certainly boons), there was a way.
The first time they met wasn’t graced with so much a conversation as a heartbeat’s notice before a scythe lodged through her arcanist’s tome, which she’d used as a shield in a moment of stupid brilliance. She was still getting used to the tingle the echo brought, the sudden signals that warned her of danger, whether to  sidestep or take something head on. She hadn’t had time to dodge, but blocking, well. Throwing her weapon up in front of her face had worked. Sort of.
Left without a weapon, her carbuncle fizzled out with a sad chirp, but it’d worked to disarm her attacker at the same time. The blade stuck (a magician’s tome was far sturdier than any normal book, and its aetheric balance getting disrupted in so rude a manner had caused it to lash out at the offending weapon), and as Cahsi gripped onto her former spellbook with a strength that came from adrenaline and twisted, her attacker was left with naught but his own surprise, hands grasping at the air.
His expression had been unfeeling, cold, nearly bored when he first struck (which offended her, truly, especially as her mission had been to talk to the group she was sure this guy was from based on his attire, yet here he had been, taking a swing at her with no remorse. She’d been so sure of her demise for that one moment, not a word to be shared between two strangers, just a quick stab and run).
But when she’d taken his scythe in her own hands, the book still stuck on the end, his face instead morphed into fury with a flash of something else. Not scared of what she might do, no. Something worse, unexpected. Something like relief. Like something bad and possibly irreversible might happen to him, and he would welcome that outcome.
She took pity on him, in the way she knew how. Channeling the tome’s frenetic aether toward that which pierced it, through and out, she guided it into the scythe, destroying both it and the book in the process. Nothing but sparks and cinders and smoke. It would have looked heroic and impressive if it hadn’t burnt the hell out of her hands in the process, the yell she let out as much from pain as it was intended to scare him into backing off. Her gloves covered the damage well enough, anyway, and she had the gift of accelerated healing. She’d be fine soon enough. At least nobody would be returning to the lifestream today, not if she could do anything about it.
It was terrifying, mostly because she recognized that look from her own reflection in the mirror not that long ago. Maybe still, at times. After the Calamity had taken her family, and Theia most of all, Cahsi had. Well she had not turned to unsavory deeds, but she could easily imagine a universe in which she had. It was a blur, those first few years, could barely call it living. She’d turned to skin and bones and studied her tail off to become an arcanist because at least it was something to fill her time. Theia would have found carbuncles cute. It kept her mind from deteriorating. And since adventuring, it had started to get better. She was still cold, still distant, wouldn’t wish to admit it out loud, but she had come further along a path that felt right compared to this assailant in front of her.
Not that she knew it, couldn’t have at the time, but Cahsi had crossed paths with this redheaded man during his darkest time. Just a young midlander with a patchy beard, freshly healed scars, and eyebags covered up with smudged eyeliner. Back when he’d found himself running around with a gang of thieves who just couldn’t give up on the days of piracy, no matter what Merlwyb decreed. He’d shed the blood of innocents and he likely would again. He was lost, found, and then lost again.
She leveled him with a glare that gave the impression she wouldn’t give him what he wanted, not today. He was going to live, by her grace. He was going to see that not everyone retaliated violence with more violence.
Despite the urge to hurt her that she’d seen in his gray and gold eyes, he’d given up quickly enough. She got the feeling he’d attacked her as an instinctive lashing out, to protect himself, but that he didn’t truly wish to hurt her.
She’d let him go with a hastily, sub-par crafted scythe (there was only so much she could do when her main skills were with goldsmithing, after all). He hadn’t thanked her, but he hadn’t tried to attack her again either, and his frown had been less angry and more tired, neutral, so she’d counted it as a win.
She still didn’t trust him, would be a fool to trust a would-be murderer so quickly and wouldn’t for many meetings to come, and he obviously felt the same, but there was something there. That tiny seed of kinship she could feel trying to grow and nurture itself. There was a man who was broken and angry like her. Maybe, just maybe, they could figure out how to be less angry and broken with one another’s help, instead of drowning in it. And maybe she didn’t want to do that, comfortable in her sorrow. She was still deciding. It was easier to keep people away, hurt too much to get to know someone. Who knows what this stranger wanted, anyway. They'd likely never meet again.
They’d talked. Purely business. She’d been sent on a mission, after all. He’d snarled and he’d threatened and he raised fists a few times (they tussled, briefly, but her stamina and recovery was better, and she outlasted him until he was a panting, tired mess pinned down by her sharp knees in the dirt, and he’d finally relented to being civil about things, glares ineffective against her.) He was more bark than bite, even in that first meeting. Once he was without weapon, the murder attempts stopped completely, no matter how angry he looked or sounded!
She’d gotten the information she needed about the group of pirates he belonged to, he’d convinced her she owed him for destroying his scythe (which, again! He tried to kill her with! But his gang of bad-doers were going to try to kill him for giving up their intel, for failing them, and how was he supposed to defend himself without a weapon, his death would be on her hands--).
She refused to think of him as interesting. Infuriating,  yes. Too much like her, too close to home, maybe. She hoped he’d turn away from the life he’d gotten mixed up in, hoped that when she reported back to the yellowjackets that they would take care of that gang and that redhead would somehow escape, reform, or at least live.
That wouldn’t be the last time they met, but it would be their most hostile encounter. One day, Cahsi would be used to someone trying to kill her on their first meeting, and she would learn to roll with it. A regular occurrence for the Warrior of Light. It was something new and exciting at that point in her journey, though, and not something she could forget (and therefore would needle and tease the man relentlessly about it, eventually). One day, she would learn that his name was Vaile, and that hers was Cahsi. One day, they would consider one another comrades, as unbelievable as that would have seemed that first meeting.
And one day, one day, years and years after hardship and pain, it would happen. It would.
After that first meeting, he was simply ‘the angry redhead with the scythe that tried to kill me’, a pirate who didn’t seem to belong in that role. He was someone she hoped found a purpose, a way to help people more than hurt them, somewhere to fit in and belong and feel cared about enough to want to care for himself.
She hoped it for him as much as she hoped that for herself.

I am ONE HOUR into the Calamity finale; Patia is dead, Loquacious and Nydas are unconscious, Cerrit is over the city somewhere, time is paused for Laerryn who is at 22hp and Asmodeus is playing with Zerxus like a rag doll.
HOW DOES THIS HAVE FIVE HOURS LEFT?! Does that mean *someone* survives that long?!
I mean barely a single second has passed in AN HOUR of playtime. And the entire thing has been entirely riveting!!
Main two thoughts so far (I swear to god do not spoiler anything for me):
1. Brennan. Is. Absolutely. Masterful. As. Lord of Hells. Split second acting decisions when to roar and when to whisper, the mindset of this god and the small human before him. How the interaction went from pain/pity to homoerotic with the gentle caresses to *violent murder and ressurection and spitting in his face*. Just wow and aaaahhhh
2. AU where Portia survives and spends the rest of her days teaching young wizards; over-correcting so young people have all this secret arcane knowledge but they need it id theyre gonna survive long. And she becomes this legend who might visit your town and give you a slightly better chance to survive and she just wears rags and drives herself to absolute capacity, and no matter how long she lives she'll never make up for it, no matter how much she teaches theres always more that will never be known.
She has no heroic death. Becomes a bog mummy after falling off the side of the road. Or maybe she goes in her sleep at some nameless crossing, unrecognised when she is found; or perhaps recognised and buried with honours she would never willingly accept.
Or maybe even known, and hated, and driven away, such that she holds on this knowledge and cannot possibly pass it on. Maybe she gives up on that, tries instead to write it down, to recreate the lost library but even for a elf its a task too great for her years. It all went wrong, confined to paper and her mind alone, and here she sits surrounded by paper again, inscribing it again because theres nothing else to do.
Maybe the letters get smeared and the great name of Po'rco becomes Orco and myths arise, and a thousand years later some weary adventurer stumbles ass-first into the Orco Library and discovers secrets beyond their Age's comprehension.
Anyway, off to see how everyone else dies now! (Except Cerrit's kids, they better fucking survive).

okay i've been thinking about it all day and i have mostly decided on a course of action. i don't want to stream ocarina of time first for two reasons. 1. i am simply Not Quite Ready. i will progress in the game faster than i will progress in [redacted] and i don't want to overtake myself. 2. i also don't need the capture card to stream oot, i could have done it all along, and since the capture card was a gift that i have been begging for (for two years!), i want to use it right away. so i need something that i play on switch. sorry oot fans i hope you understand :(
THAT SAID. given the monumental nature of this task (i remind you again: 800+ HOURS), it is a fool's errand to attempt to do these in any sort of chronological order or release order. most people don't experience the games in this order anyway; i definitely didn't. and generally speaking, zelda isn't a series that requires you to have seen or know about the other games to enjoy the one sitting in front of you.
so i have two potential candidates for the first streamed zelda game. 1. skyward sword and 2. hyrule warriors age of calamity. both of these are switch games that i have been meaning to get around to and haven't played yet (hwaoc came out right after the s*pernatural finale...) and streaming would be the perfect way to get started. skyward sword is good because it's chronologically first and anyone can enjoy it, but i HAVE already played it, and if i do it first, there might not be time for oot before the new game comes out. age of calamity is good because i haven't played it yet and i really need to do that before botw2 comes out and if i get it out of the way i will DEFINITELY have time for oot, but i don't think anyone who hasn't seen or played breath of the wild will enjoy it very much since it's a botw prequel, and i know there were some people who expressed interest in stream joining who haven't seen or played botw, so i am leaning towards skyward sword for sheer accessibility.
but who knows, maybe i'll have time for all 3 if i do some midnight streams! as long as i don't slack on envesseled i don't have any other major projects taking up my free time that have a deadline 😅

Amphibia-The Hardest Thing Recap
Tumblr media
The hardest thing is saying goodbye. Spoilers below.
The episode begins with the core, still alive, flying off to the moon to drive it into the planet. It would rather kill all life on Amphibia than die. Valeriana pops up, after being gone all of season three. She uses the box to give Sasha and Marcy powers. So the three fly up and fight the moon.
It starts out so easy, the whole thing feels like a victory lap. But Sasha and Marcy are still new to this and start to burn out. Mother Olm warns Anne that using the true power of the stones would kill her, but she does it anyway. And ANdrias smashes his crown, killing the last bit of the core. Anne blows up the moon and she turns to dust. It’s only been ten minutes!
But before dying the entity behind the stones copies her mind and brings it to wherever it is. I guess that means the Anne we end the series with is technically a clone. Not a huge fan of that. The entity takes the form of a computer but when Anne quips that it’s an old one so it takes the form of Domino. It pulls a Kami and asks Anne to take it’s place since she saved the world. Anne points out she’s a dumb 13-year-old, or 2-minute-old. So the Entity decides to check in when she dies again.
Anne is sent back with just enough power to get the girls home. All the girls get heartfelt goodbyes with their respective amphibian families. And the girls go and the box turns to dust.
We jump ten years later, we get to see Polly as a proper frog! Yunan and Olivia are a couple. I was worried that the hand holding during their goodbye to Marcy but it feels more organic putting it here. Andrias is helping restore the environment he destroyed. And he’s chained up to show he is a prisoner. The frogs of Wartwood put up a statue of Anne. Would have done that earlier but it’s a good moment.
Back on Earth, Sasha has become a child psychologist or a teacher and Marcy makes a webcomic. I am kinda of bummed that the calamity trio drifted apart during high school. I get that it ties in to the themes of accepting change and not holding on but wasn’t separating them from their frog family enough? It’s mediated by skipping that part and jumping to them reunited for Anne’s 23rd birthday.
And Sasha’s bi! Good for her. It’s weirdly small. Maybe Matt had trouble getting in or couldn’t fit it in organically. Or it could have been trouble with the censors. It seems like you need to pre-plan this stuff to a ridiculous degree to get it in. No shipping for the girls. While I was partial to Anne/Marcy, I’m fine with them focusing on the friendship.
Anne meanwhile had become a herpetologist and the frog lady at the aquarium.
That was a wild ride. It was nice to see the show grow on to its own and see the fandom explode once Marcy was introduced. I am sad to see the lore heavy adventure shows that I cut my teeth writing about for this blog go away though. Adventure Time ushered in a wonderful age of animation and it’s bittersweet to see it slowly be replaced by slice of life shows. Not that those slice of life shows are bad, Creig of the Creek, Big City Greens, and The Ghost and Molly Mcgee are wonderful shows, but will miss shows like Amphibia and Owl House, which is wrapping up soon.
Although this episode gets a ¾ the series as a whole gets 4/4.

After 5 years, I think my CR obsession is finally dwindling. For years I would never miss a live episode, now for the past four months I can't stay awake past the break. Last night I turned it off so I could focus on researching for a fic, and a few months ago I turned off an ep to read fic. I can't really get into all of the new content - I never finished part 2 of EXU, I watched most of Calamity but still haven't seen the end, or basically any of the other recent oneshots. I don't have the same level of excitement for c3 that I did for the other campaigns.
This isn't a complaint post btw, this feels very much like a ME thing. And if there's something that is bothering me about CR, then I don't know what it is yet in a way I can put into words, and this isn't meant to be some kind of rant anyway. I'm just . . . kinda sad about it I guess because it's been such a big part of my life. I've bought the comics and a puzzle and a shirt and socks and DICE even though I don't even play d&d . . . and now I just feel like I have stuff. I hate that feeling actually, when the love for something fades and then you just have these reminders of things that used to make you feel good.
I'm not giving up on c3 yet. This is just me sort of tentatively considering it at this point. But I think on Thursday nights, if there is something else I'd rather be doing, I'm going to let myself do that - even if I hate the idea of missing something big. Maybe this is just a funk I'm in right now. Maybe the storyline will pick up in a way that really interests me, idk. I love the characters, I still care about the cast, and I'm gonna watch every season of The Legend of Vox Machina they give us - but I don't know about the rest.

CQL-verse! The characters have the same age gaps between them as their actors and actresses! Wwx and Jyl are the same age, jc is 5 years younger than them. Lxc is 3 years younger than wwx&jyl and lwj is 3 years younger than him. Nmj is two years older than wwx&jyl and nhs is 8 years younger than him and the same age as lwj. (1/2)
Meng Yao is 2 years older than nhs and jzx is 2 years older than MY. I'm leaving the Wen Sibs out of this because otherwise WN would be the same age as wwx and WQ would be 4 years younger than him. But hey! If you want to go with that, go crazy! I was thinking more of Yunmeng Sibs focus, but I will be happy with anything! (2/2)

Untamed
Nie Mingjue hated the Wen sect to the point of death and war, but he had always had trouble hating sad and gentle Wen Ning.
Wen Ning was technically his peer – there were only two years between them in age – and therefore capable of the same sorts of responsibilities and duties towards righteousness as Nie Mingjue, meaning that he ought to hate him as much as all the rest. But at the same time, Wen Ning was only part of the main branch family indirectly, a ward of Wen Ruohan; he was constantly suppressed and even tormented by Wen Chao, the eldest son of that family. If anything, it seemed almost as if he’d been brought into the family just to act as the family’s scapegoat, the inferior copy that was so hapless that he made that self-indulgent hedonist Wen Chao appear somewhat competent in contrast.
Nie Mingjue couldn’t imagine treating any of his own cousins that way.
He and Wen Chao were often compared, both being about the same age, and their young brothers were of similar age as well, both of them only fourteen; this juxtaposition made sure that every single person in the cultivation world talk of them in the same breath. Nie Mingjue always came out the better in the comparison, and Wen Xu the same for his, which in the minds of most people balanced out, but which caused Wen Chao no end of rage. He knew he couldn’t take out his anger on the talented Wen Xu and so took out on poor Wen Ning instead.
Nie Mingjue hated the Wen sect.
He did not hate Wen Ning.
Wen Ning, who should not be here.
“Please,” Wen Ning said, nearly in tears, as he threw himself down to the floor in front of Nie Mingjue. He’d burst into the room in the inn Nie Mingjue was staying at, the guards that no sect leader could do without no matter what they wanted following close behind in alarm until Nie Mingjue had waved them off with a gesture; he’d been panting so hard that he’d only just now caught his breath. “Please help this useless older brother do one good thing with his life.”
Alarmed, Nie Mingjue reached out and caught Wen Ning by the shoulders, pulling him to stand and even forgetting himself enough to reach forward with a sleeve to dab away the tears staining the other man’s face.
“What is it?” he asked, feeling anxiety curdling in his gut. He’d spoken with Wen Ning before during the discussion conferences, both when he was younger and even, in a few stolen moments, after he became sect leader; he knew Wen Ning had a steady personality, if a weak one from all the bullying he endured, and that he was not given to unnecessary hysterics. If he could tolerate Wen Chao’s endless torment with a faint smile and a don’t worry sect leader Nie once you’re used to it it’s more funny than anything else, then what could make him act like this? “What is that you need help with? I do not understand.”
Wen Ning looked tired. He always had, his health had always been poor, but now it seemed worse than ever; there were circles under his eyes, and Nie Mingjue had no idea how he’d managed to get away from the Nightless City to come find him. The town he was currently in was close to the border the Qinghe Nie shared with Qishan Wen, but it was still an effort, especially for someone like Wen Ning. He might be a member of the Wen family by name, but his freedom was significantly curtailed, and it wasn’t only because he was sickly.
“My little sister is going to be attending the lectures at the Cloud Recesses,” Wen Ning said.
“The - Lan sect lectures?” Nie Mingjue repeated blankly. It was a stupid thing to say; of course it was the Lan sect’s lectures, who else would give lectures at the Cloud Recesses? And yet, at the same time – “The Wen sect hasn’t gone to them in generations.”
“Sect Leader Wen asked A-Qing to look for something,” Wen Ning said. “I don’t know what. He talks to her more than he talks to me, when she’s treating him with acupuncture and other such things – he only wants blood relations treating him now, so she’s passing along what she can do, the doctors all say she’s talented – he told her something, I think, but I don’t know what, he doesn’t talk to me…and she doesn’t talk to me, either.”
“She’s sixteen, they’re like that,” Nie Mingjue said, trying to offer comfort, but he didn’t like the sound of that – Wen Ruohan growing reliant on the medical skills of a teenager, talking with her as if she were an adult…it didn’t speak well to the Chief Cultivator’s state of mind. “So she’s going to go spy on them?”
“She is. And maybe more. There’s – there’s something back in the Nightless City, something Sect Leader Wen is refining in order to increase his power. Whatever it is, it’s powerful and evil.” Wen Ning looked paler than usual, somehow. “It was something that was kept in a cave near our village when we were younger, once. Sect Leader Wen took it away to study, and it made something go crazy, I got hurt, and my parents – anyway, it doesn’t matter. I can’t go near it without losing my senses, so I really don’t know anything about it. But I know that Sect Leader Wen only has a piece – and the Lan sect has another.”
Lan Xichen had never mentioned such a thing, but then again, he wasn’t really old enough that Nie Mingjue would expect him to know everything about his sect – he was after all a full five years younger than Nie Mingjue, three years younger than Wen Ning; he was still only seventeen, having only just graduated from his uncle’s classes the year before. He was only very technically sect leader, in the same way Nie Mingjue had only been technically sect leader after his father’s death, although unlike Lan Xichen Nie Mingjue had fought his way to step up to the task for real early on. He himself was only barely considered an adult at the age of twenty-two; it was no surprise that in the Lan sect, which had Lan Qiren to rely on, Lan Xichen might not know it all.
Or perhaps he knew, and simply didn’t say. Each sect was entitled to its secrets.
“What are you thinking?” Nie Mingjue asked.
“I’m thinking that my sister is constantly afraid for me, even though she’s younger than me,” Wen Ning said solemnly. “I’m thinking that she will break her own principles into pieces to protect me. I’m thinking that she’ll find whatever it is, or find a hint to it, and then Wen Chao will take his forces to burn the Cloud Recesses to the ground in search of it.”
Nie Mingjue could see that.
He didn’t want to, but he could.
“My brother is attending those lectures,” he said blankly. Nie Huaisang was there right now. He could be in danger – no, he would be in danger. Nie Huaisang wasn’t a good cultivator, and at fourteen, he was just a baby. Nie Mingjue had sent Meng Yao with him, nominally as his attendant, but in fact to get the benefit of the classes himself and also bully Nie Huaisang into actually learning something – he’d brought Meng Yao into the Nie sect after Jin Zixuan, full of guilt over how his father had treated a boy only two years his junior, had sent him a letter beseeching him for help following Meng Yao’s public and humiliating rejection from Jinlin Tower – but Meng Yao was only sixteen, of age with Wen Qing; what could he really do?
Moreover, sending Wen Qing and not Wen Xu, even though Wen Xu was the same age as Nie Huaisang and Lan Wangji, indicated that Wen Ruohan didn’t want his more promising son to get involved in whatever it was that he was planning, or maybe in whatever consequences followed. If Wen Chao really were to try something violent, they couldn’t afford to have a weakness already there…
“I need to get A-Qing out of the Wen sect,” Wen Ning said, and Nie Mingjue turned to look at him in shock. “Permanently. I’ve begged her to go, but she won’t leave me, she won’t leave our family of the Dafan Wen, but she has to. Something bad is going to happen soon. I know it. I don’t mind trading my life for hers, but she has to live.”
“Is there any way you can go to the Cloud Recesses as well?” Nie Mingjue asked, his mind already racing. He’d long ago given up on helping Wen Ning because he knew the other man wouldn’t turn traitor against his family, being an upright and filial child, but if his family had reached such a depth of corruption as that, then it was only right to leave them behind. If Wen Ning was finally accepting that, maybe there was something he could do. “You’re sensitive to the – whatever it is. Right? Maybe Wen Qing can suggest bringing you around to help her find her way to it.”
“How would that help?”
“It gets you somewhere safe, while I can rescue Dafan Wen – without a threat to you or to them, your sister would have no reason to insist on staying,” Nie Mingjue said, though it wouldn’t be him, exactly, that did the rescue – he’d need a firm alibi lest Wen Ruohan use it as an excuse to start something with his Nie sect. He might have prepared for war as much as he could, but the Wen sect was still stronger; if war broke out, he needed to make sure that he had the moral high ground.
Luckily, Wei Wuxian, that walking calamity of a head disciple of Yunmeng Jiang, had of late developed the habit of wandering over to visit various other sects, including Qinghe (and Nie Mingjue in specific), at his leisure, and no one ever would think to blame him for such a strange thing as a subsidiary sect of distant Wen sect cousins disappearing.
After all, Wei Wuxian had no reason to know or care about the Dafan Wen, and everyone knew he abjured politics completely, violently and repetitively, so as to make no mistake about anyone who might otherwise see him as competition for the Jiang sect’s true heir, Jiang Cheng. The five-year gap between their ages kept them from being compared – you couldn’t expect a child, and at fifteen Jiang Cheng was still very much a child, to keep up with an adult just turned twenty like Wei Wuxian – but there had always been whispers given everything with Cangse Sanren, and Wei Wuxian had had to work very hard to put a stop to them.
Wei Wuxian’s wandering habit had started back when he’d been trying to find Jiang Yanli a new fiancée to replace the engagement he’d broken by fighting with Jin Zixuan, however shameful it was for him to fight with a boy two years his junior. It was for that that he had come to Qinghe to meet Nie Mingjue, leading to them hitting it off as friends despite Nie Mingjue expressing that he had absolutely no interest in getting married to Jiang Yanli, or indeed to any nice young lady at all; then, in turn, Nie Mingjue had brought him to the Lan sect to meet Lan Xichen. They’d gotten along as well, although the most notable outcome of that visit had been little Lan Wangji developing a crush on his elder brother’s new friend while Wei Wuxian remained blissfully oblivious. His wanderings had continued even after Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan had found their way back to each other, affianced once again through their own choice rather than their parents’.
Said parents had not yet been informed of this new situation, as they were waiting for the right time to mention it. Or perhaps more accurately, the right situation to exploit with it…
Now, Nie Mingjue thought. Now was the time. It would work perfectly.
And not just as a distraction.
“Are you sure…?”
“I am,” Nie Mingjue said. “Whatever it is, Wen Ruohan must be kept from obtaining all of the pieces; he’s already too powerful, and more power will only make him more arrogant. I’ll speak with Lan Qiren. Once I take the Dafan Wen back to the Nie sect, your sister will be able to testify to whatever it is that she was asked to search for, which will give Lan Qiren the evidence he needs to get his sect’s approval for retaliatory measures. Moreover, using Wei Wuxian to help me will force Jiang Fengmian to support me as well; there’s no way he’d ever refuse to back him to the hilt.”
“The Jin sect –”
“Will join us,” Nie Mingjue said, thinking of Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan’s yet-to-be-announced engagement. Once Jin Guangshan realized that he would be pulled into the same boat as the rest of them whether he wanted to or not, any resistance he had would crumble like a structure made of sand being beaten down by the tide. “They won’t have a choice. Is there anything else I should know?”
“There’s a child,” Wen Ning said, biting his lips. “Around the same age as your brother or my sister, or maybe the Jiang sect heir, I don’t know, around that. He helps Sect Leader Wen with whatever he’s doing.”
“A child helps him?”
Nie Mingjue didn’t like the sound of that.
“I don’t know. Some secret his family knows, I think…his surname is Xue.”
Nie Mingjue frowned.
“I don’t know much about him,” Wen Ning added. “Only that he has some history with the Yueyang Chang clan. Bad history.”
“That’s a good start,” Nie Mingjue said. He realized that he hadn’t yet released Wen Ning’s shoulders, and gave them a small squeeze before doing so. “Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I will do everything I can to help you.”
Wen Ning looked at him with admiration in his eyes, making Nie Mingjue feel a little hot under the collar.
“Thank you, Chifeng-zun,” he murmured, and Nie Mingjue shook his head.
“Call me by name,” he said, and tried to smile. “You’ll be here a lot in the future, if all goes well.”
Nie Mingjue hated the Wen sect, but he didn’t hate gentle and sad Wen Ning.
He didn’t hate him at all.
