 –
Everyone seemed to have come up with some excuse. Well, Nami never actually confirmed she would be coming to their movie night, but that didn’t help make Sanji feel less frustrated when she mentioned she had other plans. Usopp, on the other hand, was dealing with a last-minute project and couldn’t afford to spend the night out of his desk. Everyone had brought him some dinner and kissed his forehead as a lucky charm before going to the living room.
As for Luffy… Ace had suddenly appeared and taken him somewhere in the city. Last time they chatted, they were lost and giggling in who knows where. He told everyone to not worry, so N started playing the film with their three friends all sharing the same sofa.
In front of them, some random snacks Sanji was offended they had bought, as well as everyone’s drinks and some belongings. N patted his knee as they started to eat some gummies. He sighed and laid back to finally pay attention to the film.
On the other side of the sofa, by N’s right, Vassago was overthinking every possible move they could make to get snacks. Zoro was comfortably sitting beside them, so, so close that their bodies would brush each other with any movement. Silly thing to worry about, they knew. But with Zoro frowning at the screen and laughing with the film centimetres from them… It was impossible for it to not have any effect of Vassago.
The same went for Zoro, though.
Half the movie had passed when N moved a bit in the sofa to rest their head on Vas’ shoulder. They did not pay much attention to it at first, but then the seemingly soft gesture started to get heavy. And heavier. And heavier. N was resting their whole weight on them and slowly pushed Vas, who was about to lose their balance and fall on Zoro’s side. What a daring strategy coming from N.
On their defense, Vassago got even stiffer than they already were. They thought they would be able to stay in place with that effort. They had to be able to, or who knows how that could end. Maybe on Zoro’s lap. Perhaps on his shoulder, if they were lucky enough to not fall down the sofa and explain that N was pushing them. Actually, maybe falling down the sofa sounded more bearable than suddenly getting even closer to their crush’s face.
…Right? They could not, by any chance, deal with Zoro’s body warmth at the moment. Their brain would need time to process it, making them respond awkwardly and making it all worse. And they knew N would think it wasn’t a big deal, but how were they supposed to casually hide in the crook of his neck? Or what if they really fell down and Zoro tried to hold them? Or…?
Those were too many thoughts, and their cheeks were already getting red because of them. Because of mere thoughts. Unfortunately for them, N had had time to come up with an idea to fight back.
With a slow movement (shipper’s #1 rule: do not make it obvious), N pulled Sanji in to also help them push Vas. It caught him off guard so he did not resist, and all the sudden weight finally made Vassago’s balance break apart.
And their brain had predicted the outcome. As if N had started some kind of domino effect, Vas’ head was now resting on Zoro’s shoulder, just as N’s was on theirs and Sanji’s on N’s. Zoro, who had no idea of the little fight that had been going on, chuckled at the view and continued watching the film as if nothing was happening. Vassago sent a panicked look to N, who smiled back as they noticed Zoro’s cheeks also blushing. They could be so obvious sometimes.
But that was not all. Oh, N wouldn’t let that be all.
After some minutes in that position, they noticed an empty popcorn bucket by Vas’ legs. They looked at Sanji, who was comfortably resting on them as if they also were part of the sofa now, and their shipper engines started working once again.
“Sanji,” they called in a whisper. “Sígueme un momento. Deberíamos irnos un rato.”
“Oye, que a algunos nos interesa la película,” he answered without taking his eyes from the screen.
“El prota se muere al final.”
“Tch. Tienes suerte de que te aprecio.”
In silence, not really explaining anything to anyone else, N got up from the sofa and took the empty popcorn bucket with them. They made a gesture to Sanji, who tiredly followed them out of the room.
And they left. It was just them now. Vassago, Zoro and the TV they had been too nervous to pay attention to during the last minutes. Vas’ fear was increasing with the sudden silence between them and could not move from there, from the spot they had won in Zoro’s body that night. On the other hand, Zoro managed to blurt out one of his very few thoughts and helped them relax for a second:
“Doesn’t N… dislike popcorn?”
“Actually, yeah,” Vas confirmed in a low voice, accidentally making Zoro go through a realisation moment. Because they were there. He hadn’t heard them wrong. That voice that always made his days was suddenly touching his skin with their words, and he could reach them back by just raising his hand a little and they were alone.
He should have never trusted that curly eyebrow with his gushes on who he had a crush on. Yet now there he was, feeling like the luckiest man on Earth just because he had Vassago so close to him; and he was loving every second of it, but he would die of embarrassment if they noticed how red his face was getting.
And Vassago thought the exact same thing. After breaking the awkward silence with that comment about N, they thought they had a chance to move a bit and get out of that situation. Maybe the excuse of taking something from the table would be good enough. So they held onto the sofa, making an effort to push themself away and go back to where they were before all the chaos, but they couldn’t.
Zoro automatically reacted to this by extending his arm and bringing Vas’ head back to his shoulder again. It had been an impulse. More like what his heart wanted than whatever his brain could explain at the moment. And for that exact reason, he couldn’t say anything when Vas stared at him in confusion. Words weren’t appearing. Not in his head, not in his throat. This man was too stubborn to do something that wasn’t the only idea he could have when seeing Vas like that.
So his hand reached for their cheek, and it was welcomed by the very same warmth that Zoro had been feeling since Vassago had fallen on him. And as the staring continued and he did not get any clues to stop, he closed the distance with a kiss. Kissing them slowly, at first, as he tried to feel the lips he had longed for; shifting on the sofa, then, as soon as they felt Vas reciprocate and wanted for more.
