My Steven Universe buds, guess who used concrete, as is, stated in the canon of the show, information to figure out what year Steven was born?
...by which I mean the 2 most reasonable possibilities. (Which also means I figured out when Connie was born... or again the 2 most reasonable possibilities.)
Tl;dr: It’s 1999 or 2000.
Get comfortable... It’s a lot.
So first off Channel Frederator's timeline is close, if not right on the money, based on my own calculations. With that said I am going to lay out why I agree that Steven was born in 2000.
To get Steven's birth year though we actually have to center the timeline around Greg with key information regarding Sour Cream, Buck Dewey and the Dondai.
As stated in "Steven's Birthday" by Greg himself he was 22 when he met Rose and the Gems. He had playing music gigs and was recording his album for about 2-4 years before this since he also said he dropped out of community college to pursue a music career and moved out of his home around this time. Assuming that Greg was, like most people, 18 when he graduated and community college is 2 years that means he left home between 18 and 20.
In "Gem Harvest" Greg says to Andy he left home “like 2 decades ago.” Let’s not split hairs and just say he left 20 years ago to make the math easier that puts Greg anywhere from 38 to 40. We can confirm the youngest possible age Greg could be when Steven was born (which is ridiculous but possible) would be 23 making Greg 37 which means he left home 19 years ago at most because again we know that he left home when he was at least 18. However that is NOT actually possible. Because Greg remember was 22 when he met the Gems and Sour Cream, who we know is significantly older than Steven, was born when Greg was around 23. Which means we need to add however many years older Sour Cream is than Steven to Greg’s age.
This is where Buck Dewey comes into play.
As stated in "Little Graduation" Buck is going to med school to become a doctor. This means he needs to have his bachelor's degree in Pre-med which takes 4 years to complete. Steven is 16 meaning the Cool Kids, Sour Cream included, are 22 for Buck to have completed 4 years of college after finishing high school since once again most teenagers graduate at 18. Sour Cream had to be 6 when Steven was born (5 if you want to say maybe they graduated at 17 and are 21). That adds 5 or 6 years to Greg’s 23 making him 28 or 29.
That means when Steven was 14, Greg was 42 or 43 when he told Andy he left like 2 decades ago. In this case the word like is being used to indicate estimation not an exact amount. Example: If I say I left work like 20 minutes ago I could mean any number close to 20. 18, 21, etc.) If he left at 18 it would be 24 or 25 years ago, if he left at 19 it would be 23 or 24 years ago, if he left at 20 it would be 22 or 23 years ago. While some of those are a stretch, 22 and 23 are both close enough to warrant being estimated to 2 decades ago.
I know what you are all thinking “Oh my God, StarChildSteven, why did you put so much thought into this? How many hours did you waste?” (The answer to that is... embarrassing.) But the other thing you are thinking is “How does Greg’s age get us to the year Steven was born.
This is where the Dondai comes in!
Ronaldo in the episode “Beach City Drift” calls it a '96 Supremo and cars are branded either after the year they are made or the following year. So the Dondai was first on sale and new in 1995 or 1996. We can infer through the evidence in the show, Greg was older than 18 but younger than 23 when the picture of him with the Dondai was taken. Greg's character design in the photo he shows to Connie and Steven is the same he has in “Story for Steven” before switching to plain shirts and stopped wearing his star shirt at the end of "Greg the babysitter" when he he starts working at the car wash. Again we can infer he doesn’t switch back to the star shirt after this as the implication is Greg somewhat gave up on his music career. At this time we already figured out he was 23. So the picture was taken when Greg was 23 or younger. Meaning the earliest it could be in “Greg the Babysitter” is 1995. Sour Cream is about a year old in this episode based on his limited speech and motor skills (he can’t walk or form words yet but can climb well) which means it is 4 or 5 years before Steven was born.
This makes our complete timeline: Greg meets the Gems at 22, Sour Cream is born when he is 23 in the year 1995, 4 or 5 years later Rose has Steven making Greg 28 or 29 and the year is either 1999 or 2000. Considering the show first aired in 2013 and Steven was 13 we can reasonably assume it is meant to be the current year within the show. That means the year Steven was most likely born is the year 2000!
*This next section is about Connie*
Now by extension this means we can also figure out when Connie was born based on her age relevant to Steven’s age as mentioned in “Steven’s Birthday.” In that episode Steven turn 14 to which Connie replies “I’m only 12 and 3/4!” Meaning Connie will be 13 in 3 months. (12 months in a year. 3/4 of 12 months is 9 months making Connie 12 years and 9 months. So in 3 months she will turn another year old.) A year after Steven’s birthday he would be 1 and the year would be either 2000 or 2001, 3 month later in November (because 3 months after August, Steven’s birth month, is November) Connie would be born in that same year. So Connie would be born in 2000 or 2001. Though as Steven as most likely born in 2000, Connie was most likely born in 2001.
As far as the SU x GF crossover: Dipper and Mabel turned 13 in 2012 the same year Steven turned either 12 or 13 meaning the twins they are anywhere from 16 days older than Steven to a year older and 16 days older than Steven. Just in case anyone was interested. I’m certainly not saying that the fans who like the crossover have to change their headcanons.
Preemptive rebuttals:
“But Steven doesn’t age like a normal human.” He doesn’t however Greg has obviously been keeping track of Steven’s age based on the passage of time not his son’s physical age or appearance. Steven didn’t look 13 yet he and Greg still celebrated his 13th birthday. It doesn’t matter if Steven doesn’t physically age, he could still be a baby but he would still have been alive for 13 years.
“We don’t know how old Greg was when he took the picture with the Dondai? For all we know he was 26!” While that IS possible it doesn’t line up with the design he has when he and Rose record the video for Steven or his design in “Three Gems and A Baby.” Remember Steven has to be born at least 5 years after Sour Cream who was conceived when Greg was 22. So at Steven’s birth Greg has to be at least 28. He has lost a significant amount of hair. While I will concede it’s possible he lost that much hair in a year it’s not likely. Greg is also wearing the star shirt in the photo with the car. He presumably stopped wearing the star shirt at 23 at the end of “Greg the Babysitter” as we see him no longer wearing it at the end of the episode when he now wears the car wash shirt and every design of him after that has him in either plain white or black shirts.
“Why do you care what year people think Steven is born? Can’t you let people have their headcanons?” Where did I say you have to take my word for this and couldn’t headcanon Steven born in a different year? Please point to the place where I said everyone must now take it as canon that Steven was born in either of the years I mentioned. Show me where I said this information negates all the opinions of other fans. Tell me where I even implied that people absolutely had to conform the conclusion I came to. If you can’t then shut up.
“Why would you waste so much time on this? It’s not that deep.” Because I enjoy doing stuff like this. I had fun doing this. This was an activity that brought me joy. Analyzing, theorizing and compiling fandom data is something that I like doing. It’s something I enjoy taking part in and sometimes I get excited to share the results of all my hard work with other people who might be interested or care.
“What if the Crewniverse gives us a different year eventually?” Then I’m still taking this as canon. The same way I take Steven as 18 at the end of the series as canon because I always prefer in canon evidence over Word of God. To me Word of God only matters for things we can’t figure out by watching the show. One day when everyone who worked on the show is dead there will be no more Word of God, all that will be left is the text (in this case the show) so anything not in the show will become irrelevant. I chose to implement that even when creators are still alive. Obviously I will no longer claim it as definitive canon (though I am not doing that now) but I will accept it as an alternative interpretation so long as nothing in the text contradicts it. Word of God is not text.

A ZED AND TWO NOUGHTS: The Greenaway Blueprint (’85) by Nathaniel Thompson
If you were a film fan in the ‘90s or early ‘00s, dropping the name “Peter Greenaway” in mixed company could elicit a wide range of reactions. Delights, grunts of disgust, shrugs of indifference – all were common and totally valid. In the ensuing years his name barely registers as a blip anymore, at least in the U.S. where his past six features have received either no distribution at all or a tiny handful of token theatrical screenings. That’s less a reflection on him than the nature of the business, where arthouse films have long since moved away from most multiplexes since he made his biggest splash with THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE AND HER LOVER (’89).
The success of COOK inspired a brief wave of theatrical runs for earlier Greenaway films that had been ignored before, most notably DROWNING BY NUMBERS (’88) and THE BELLY OF AN ARCHITECT (’87) – both among his more accessible films and featuring recognizable stars within linear plotlines. Not so lucky was A ZED AND TWO NOUGHTS (’85), Greenaway’s second narrative feature film and a jolting change of pace after his clever, acclaimed murder mystery breakthrough, THE DRAUGHTSMAN’S CONTRACT (’82). Fortunately you can see a nice sampling of Greenaway’s work all the way from his earliest days through the early ‘90s right here at FilmStruck, and ZED is one of his finest albeit more challenging masterpieces.
First of all, it’s worth pointing out if you aren’t English that the title is a play on the spelling of the word “ZOO” (the first thing you see in the film and a recurring motif throughout), interpreted as a “Z” and two zeros (or “nothings”). Those two noughts in this case are twins Oliver and Oswald Deuce, zoologists grieving in their own distinct ways after their wives are both killed in a freak car accident caused by an errant swan. They soon become entangled with the eccentric Alba Bewick (LA GRANDE BOUFFE’s [‘73] Andréa Ferréol), the car driver from the same accident and now a single leg amputee. Along the way the film works in other elements like a sexually manipulative woman named Venus de Milo (PRICK UP YOUR EARS’ [‘87] Frances Barber), time lapse photography of decaying animals and vegetation, taxonomy, and even the creation of the world.
As great as DRAUGHTSMAN is, this is really the film that sets out the Greenaway style in full force and informs what would come for the rest of his career as a director. Most significantly, it marks the first time Greenaway would work with the late, great cinematographer Sacha Vierny, the visual maestro behind such films as HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR (’59) and LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD (’61). It’s a perfect match for the two women with Vierny’s precise, gliding camerawork and impeccable eye for symmetry, which in this case fits the theme of the film like a glove. What may be a little off-putting for some viewers is the cold, removed tone of the film, with performances pitched in various shades of either grief or anger. That’s particularly the case with the two leads, played by real-life brothers Brian and Eric Deacon (who are actually separated one year by birth but could easily pass as twins themselves). Both had already established themselves as actors, with Brian in particular standing out for his work in VAMPYRES (’74) and numerous theater appearances. (Both of them also amassed quite a number of British TV credits.) They’re essentially empty shells when we first meet them, and their attempts to submerge their loss in arcane biological and zoological connections lead them to a poetically macabre fate of their own making. It’s no wonder David Cronenberg cited this film as a major influence on DEAD RINGERS (’88), his classic study of twin gynecologists (played by Jeremy Irons) drawn to a dark state of codependence through the presence of a life-changing woman.
However, it’s the placement within the Greenaway canon that really makes this a film worthy of study and repeated visits. In his prior work Greenaway treated death as something ironic or distant, a quirky footnote in someone’s personal history that can never be fully explained or understood. Here it becomes the dominant force of the entire narrative, informing the actions of all three major characters and becoming an inevitable force in the cycle of inevitable decay. Strangely, in Greenaway’s hands this doesn’t come off as fatalistic or jaded; instead it’s as natural as the frequent nudity or dining scenes he frequently films. So in a sense you can see this film as the first in a cycle of films about death, followed by permutations exploring it as a middle-aged threat to creativity (THE BELLY OF AN ARCHITECT), a bonding method among women dissatisfied with their marital lot in life (DROWNING BY NUMBERS), and a catalyst for classical revenge (THE COOK, THE THIEF).
Of course, there’s no way to talk about this film without mentioning the remarkable score by Michael Nyman, a minimalist maestro who frequently used classic compositions as jumping-off points for his insidiously catchy melodies. While DRAUGHTSMAN was an elegant and aggressive riff on Purcell, ZED goes berserk with the full spectrum of Nyman’s talents from jangling, heavily caffeinated experimentalism for the time-lapse scenes to a haunting, recurring piano and strings motif. The latter “death march” really typifies the Greenaway sound that would come to dominate his mammoth work on DROWNING and COOK, the latter especially building on the grief motif to an explosive degree with the epic “Memorial” that would serve as the film’s overriding music theme. It’s a great cinematic tragedy that Nyman and Greenaway parted ways under strained terms after PROSPERO’S BOOKS (’91), as their partnership was one of the all-time greats and, in both short films and features, yielded a body of work filled with riches and countless surprises. The debate continues over how much Greenaway has suffered since the Nyman era ended, which tends to minimize such major works as THE PILLOW BOOK (’96), NIGHTWATCHING (2007), and THE BABY OF MACON (’93), but there’s no doubt that what they achieved together is something that will never be duplicated again.

Children FOCUS:
-high levels of children’s hospitalisations as a result of poor quality housing - In 1986, around half of Māori children lived in an owner-occupied dwelling, but by 2013, the proportion was only 39% - The proportion of Pacific children who lived in an owner-occupied dwelling dropped from around half in 1986 to 28% in 2013. - children from tenant households are more mobile and are at greater risk of not succeeding at school. - While renting is a good option for many, for others, especially those with young children or those who are retired, the lack of control of housing costs and dislocation can have far-reaching consequences discussed later. T - Recent research from the Growing Up in New Zealand study found that between birth and nine months, children born into families residing in private rental accommodation were the most likely to have experienced early mobility, with nearly one in two (49%) having moved at least once, compared to fewer than one in five experiencing mobility if their families were home owners.86 The Dunedin Multidisciplinary Study found that half the 209 young people whose parents were renting in the original study, had lived in eight or more houses by the age of fifteen; only two had never moved. The average length of time spent in each house for all the young people was approximately 20 months. - Household movement has a number of major health, educational and social costs, which appear to have been neglected as important housing policy ‘spill-over’ effects. - Research carried out by the NZ Council for Educational Research89 and Ministry of Education shows that residential mobility is often associated with a change of school, increasing the disruption to children’s lives. - School enrolment data for the cohort of students born in 2000 showed that almost half (48%) of school changes (aside from ones from primary to intermediate to secondary schools) were associated with a change of residential address for the child’s mother. As of March 2015, while 51,000 students had attended fewer than five schools, 6,000 mobile students had attended 5-7 schools and 1,000 very mobile students had attended eight or more schools. - There is international evidence that the negative impacts of moving are greatest when children move both residence and school, and indeed mobile and very mobile students were more likely to receive special education services and show up in truancy data. Compared with other students in the 2000 birth cohort, mobile and very mobile students were more likely to have had a justice intervention by their 15th birthday. Among very mobile students: 11% had at least one youth justice referral, compared with 0.8% of students in the cohort as a whole; 5% had at least one youth justice placement, compared with 0.2% of students in the cohort as a whole; 30% had at least one police proceeding, compared with 5% of students in the cohort as a whole.90 - When the regulation and enforcement of rental quality is weak and landlords favour periodic or relatively short-term fixed tenancies, declining home ownership particularly affects children. The proportion of children younger than 15 living in rental dwellings increased even more than for the total population between 1986 and 2013, from 26% of children to 43% (up 65%). This increase in children in rental properties occurred at a time when the proportion of children in the population fell from around one-quarter to just over one-fifth of the population. - one-quarter of Pacific babies and around one-third of Māori babies living in an owner-occupied dwelling. F - The proportion of children younger than 15 living in rental accommodation increased from 26% of children to 43% (up 65%) - International studies have found that children who move house in the first year of life are at substantially increased risk of emergency admissions for potentially preventable hospitalisations in early childhood.93 Children living in rental accommodation are more likely to be hospitalised, especially for diseases linked to housing, more likely to be re-hospitalised, and more likely to die young. - The Ministry of Health (MOH) has labelled some diseases ‘Housing-Sensitive Hospitalisations’, for which approximately 6,000 children are admitted each year. These children are 3.6 times more likely to be re-hospitalised and 10 times more likely to die in the following 10 years.94 Addressing insecure, poor-quality rental housing therefore presents a critical need and opportunity for early intervention, to prevent the initial hospitalisation, and to prevent subsequent hospitalisations and deaths. - Apart from making dwellings damp and harder to heat, low indoor temperatures are an important health hazard, especially for babies, children, older people and those with chronic illnesses and disabilities. - The Housing, Heating and Health Study showed that retrofitting insulation and installing effective home heating decreased wheezing in children with asthma and reduced their number of sick days off school.1 Crowding: Crowding is increased by social and economic factors, such as the decline of affordable housing, the rising level of rents in most cities and the lack of security of tenure in the private rental market, which leads to many households ‘doubling up’ to reduce per-person rents. Data from the 2013 Census shows a mixed picture of crowding. The proportion of people living in crowded households and the proportion of crowded households has dropped, but the number of households and number of people living in them has risen.119 Data from the 2013 Census using a variety of crowding measures showed that around 10% of people live in crowded conditions, with the highest proportion in Counties Manukau DHB region (22%), followed by Auckland (16%) and then Tairawhiti (15%). Children are over represented in crowded households, with over half of crowded households having two or more children living in them. Two in five Pacific people (38%) and one in five Māori (20%) and Asian (18%) people live in crowded households, compared to 1 in 25 Europeans (4%). There is an income gradient with 9% of those people living in crowded households not using any form of heating in their houses.120 People in some low-income households endure crowding as a way to keep warm and this is likely to be one of the main drivers of our high rates of close-contact infectious diseases, especially among children and particularly Pacific and Māori children, where the rates of hospitalisation are double those for European children.121 Tuberculosis acquired in New Zealand is significantly associated with household crowding.122 Approximately 10% of hospital admissions per year for diseases such as pneumonia, meningococcal disease and tuberculosis are attributable to household crowding; for Māori and Pacific people, the number is 20% of hospitalisations.1 - Data from the MOH, using their classification of potentially avoidable housing-related hospitalisations, estimate the cost for children aged 0-14 was around $96 million in 2016/17.

Will Most Sunscreens Be Eventually Banned? Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola Oxybenzone (benzophenone-3)1 is one of the most common ingredients found in sunscreen products. Its primary function is to prevent your skin from absorbing ultraviolet (UV) light. Since the chemical is cost effective and increases the sunblock protection in a sunscreen product, it can be found in nearly 3,500 brands of sunscreen worldwide.2 If you reapply the product every two hours as directed, an average day at the beach may mean you are exposed to 2 to 4 ounces of a product containing chemicals known to disrupt human hormones.3 Studies have also suggested oxybenzone is a hormone disruptor in marine creatures.4 Although much media attention is focused on oxybenzone, other chemicals in sunscreens trigger damage to human health and the environment. These include octinoxate, which has demonstrated hormone disruption in animals and behavioral alterations, homosalate, which is unstable and breaks down in the sun, and avobenzone that may damage sperm.5 As you swim, sunscreen is released into the water, necessitating reapplication. However, this release also dumps up to 14,000 metric tons of product into coral reef areas each year.6 Much of the sunscreen contains oxybenzone that may damage marine life at levels as low as 62 drops per trillion, or the equivalent of one drop in 6.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools of water.7 In an effort to protect the coral reefs surrounding the Hawaiian Islands, democratic state senator for Hawaii’s 19th District, Will Espero, has introduced legislation that would ban the use of sunscreen that contains oxybenzone on the Islands in an effort to protect the surrounding coral reefs.8 How Sunscreen Works Sunscreen use has risen dramatically in the past decade as the medical community began warning against sunburn and sun exposure to reduce the risk of skin cancer.9 This created a growing billion-dollar sunscreen industry. According to industry analysts, the global market for sun care products is projected to hit $11.1 billion by 2020.10 Sunscreen products work one of two ways to protect your skin from UV rays from the sun. The first is a mechanical barrier used by mineral products that create a physical barrier to protect your skin. The two most common are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. In the past, these products were a thick white paste. However, in response to consumer demand for more visually pleasing products, manufacturers have turned to using nanoparticles of the same chemicals. While much of the danger to humans is inhalation of these nanoparticles,11 which is why spray-on products are best avoided, these nanoparticles have also been shown to cause ecological and aquatic damage after being released into the environment.12 The second form of sunscreen product, chemical filters, hold greater potential for harm to the environment and human health. A chemical filter works by undergoing a chemical reaction after it is absorbed into your skin,13 in the presence of UV light and heat. This means it gradually loses protective properties and requires reapplication every two to three hours.14 These sunscreens also include other ingredients meant to increase the penetration of the chemicals into your skin, called "penetration enhancers."15 The Environmental Working Group (EWG) reports that oxybenzone, one of the most "worrisome" chemicals found in sunscreen, is in 65 percent of sunscreen products on the market.16 Laboratory testing has demonstrated this chemical causes allergic skin reactions, and has weak estrogenic and powerful antiandrogenic effects in the body. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report found oxybenzone in more than 96 percent of people living in the U.S.17 Data collected from adolescents reveal young boys with higher levels of oxybenzone had lower levels of testosterone.18 EWG gives oxybenzone a hazard score of 8 out of 10 in humans based on skin penetration, widespread use and links with skin allergies and hormone disruption.19 Oxybenzone: Sunscreen Chemical Damages Coral Reefs The potential damage by oxybenzone is not limited to human health. Research has associated this chemical with death and damage to the vibrant coral reefs off the coasts of Hawaii and the Virgin Islands.20 An international team21 led by Craig Downs, Ph.D., forensic ecotoxicologist22 and executive director of Haereticus Environmental Laboratory, found the highest concentrations of oxybenzone along reefs popular with tourists in the Caribbean and along Hawaii's coastline. Downs explained the concentration of oxybenzone illuminates why they didn't observe a healthy number of baby coral in the area, as oxybenzone is fatal to young coral and alters the DNA of adults, making them more prone to lethal bleaching and death. Even small amounts of the chemical have been shown to alter DNA in a baby coral, causing it to encase itself in its skeleton and die. Oxybenzone also creates a situation in which the coral starves. Most reef building coral have a symbiotic relationship with tiny algae. The algae supply sugar for energy to the coral and the coral provides a sheltered home and carbon dioxide from metabolism to the algae.23 When the algae are poisoned by oxybenzone, the coral expel them and then die from lack of nutrients. This means tourists snorkeling along the coral reefs for an up close and personal experience with one of nature's truly amazing and unique sights may well be depositing chemicals during their swim that are killing the reefs. In an effort to fight for the health of the local environment, Espero and his team put together a bill to ban the sale of sunscreen containing oxybenzone in Hawaii. The irony is that damage to the environment by oxybenzone is more potent in sunny environments, and the sunnier the area the more sunscreen tourists use each day.24 As you may expect, this bill is being met with resistance by cosmetic companies as they predict a ban would have a large negative impact on their immediate revenue. However, while the bill was not successful in 2017, Espero and his supporters plan to continue to push for a ban on the sale of sunscreen with oxybenzone in Hawaii. If passed, it is likely other states will follow suit.25 Cosmetic Companies Concerned With Financial Losses In this short news video, you'll see the extent of the damage to the coral reef along the coastline of the big island in Hawaii and hear from Robert Richmond, Ph.D., biologist, who studies the effect of oxybenzone on marine life. Large cosmetic companies and their trade associations blocked the legislation during the current state legislative calendar, claiming the case against oxybenzone is not strong enough to warrant impacting the financial gain of their companies. A group representing nearly 90 percent of the personal care product industry commented,26 "There is no conclusive, scientific evidence that sunscreen ingredients negatively impact coral reefs at levels that have been detected in tourist areas." Richmond strongly disagrees with this opinion. Levels found in the waters off the coasts of Hawaii and the Virgin Islands are known to have a biological impact on coral. While personal care product companies are concerned over a loss of sales, Espero argues that reef-friendly sunscreen is already on the market, so a ban of the more dangerous products should not hurt the market.27 In November 2015, a group from the European Union attempted a similar ban but the push has stalled.28 It is anticipated that should the ban in Hawaii pass, it could give the ban in Europe the support needed to pass and protect more marine and human life. Any bill that included oxybenzone-related regulation has met with resistance by the Consumer Protection and Commerce Committee in the House29 that regulates trade, business and other matters pertinent to consumer protection or protection of commerce and industry in the state.30 Although using sunscreen with oxybenzone at the beach has a significant risk of washing off into the ocean water, it is important to remember that anytime sunscreen is used and the wearer showers, the chemicals wind up in the sewer system and eventually into the waterways.31 As Hawaii fights to protect their coral reefs locally, it is important to note that the sunscreen you use in the Midwest may have an impact on the health of coral reefs as the chemicals wash downstream into the ocean waters. Coral Reefs Protect the Coastline From Damaging Storms and More Although coral reefs are beautiful, they also serve a unique and compelling purpose for the protection of the coastline. They are a priceless part of the marine ecosystem as they provide a habitat for fish and other sea creatures and help absorb carbon dioxide from the environment and protect coastal cities. Nearly 25 percent of all marine life on the planet can be found in the coral reefs around the world.32 Together the marine plants and animals form an ecosystem that support marine biodiversity, performing critically important functions.33 As all ecosystems are complex and interconnected, the loss of biodiversity in marine life over the past decades has significantly impacted basic food sources for marine animals and ultimately humans. The physical framework of coral reefs serves as a mechanical buffer, protecting the coastline from ocean waves and currents. Passing over the reefs, the energy in ocean waves may be reduced by as much as 90 percent.34 This protects the coastline from erosion and loss of more delicate plant life, including mangroves, seagrass beds and the destruction of coastal communities. The reefs perform a number of other functions as well.35 They change molecular nitrogen in the water and convert it to products marine life are able to use. They supply sediment that washes up on shore, helping to line the coastline with white sand. The skeletons of the coral can provide scientists with historical accounts of environmental conditions and can be used as a tool to measure the impact of environmental disturbances. The value of the coral reefs along the U.S. coastlines has been set between $30 and $172 billion each year as the areas provide food, shoreline protection, increased tourism and even medicines.36 Marine organisms found along the reefs are rich in compounds they use to protect themselves from predators, but which scientists have used in medicines, including cancer agents, anti-inflammatories, anticoagulants and bone grafts.37 These reefs may also form the backbone of local economies, funneling tourist dollars into restaurants, hotels, diving equipment, boats and entertainment facilities. These may be sustainable when tourists are monitored to reduce damage to the local environment through damage to the reefs. In 2001, it was estimated the commercial value to U.S. fisheries from the reefs topped $100 million each year.38 Using Chemical Sunscreens May Increase Your Risk of Disease While protecting the coral reefs is an important responsibility as they protect our coastline and marine wildlife, chemical sunscreens also affect your health. Oxybenzone is a known hormone disruptor, acting like estrogen in the body, altering sperm production in men and contributing to the development of endometriosis in women.39 A comparison of daily use of sunscreen against physical barriers, such as wearing long sleeves and a hat or seeking shade, was evaluated in respect to the development of two of the more common types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). Over a period of 4.5 years and 1,600 Australian participants, the researchers found no difference in the rate of development of these types of skin cancer.40 I don't recommend spending enough time in the sun to be burned, but a one-size-fits-all recommendation to apply sunscreen daily may have a higher risk profile than anticipated. Some sunscreens may increase your risk of skin cancer as they contain retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A that has been found to promote the development of skin tumors41 when applied topically and exposed to the sun.42 Despite this knowledge, there are no warning labels to alert consumers of this potential danger. It is important to remember the SPF rating on sunscreen refers to protection against UVB light, which are the rays within the light spectrum that allow your body to produce vitamin D. However, the rating doesn't indicate protection against UVA rays linked with skin damage and cancer. Blocking the ability of your body to produce vitamin D increases your risk of cancers. One study found vitamin D levels above 40 ng/mL are associated with a more than 65 percent lower risk of cancer. The researchers commented:43 "We found a clear association between 25(OH)D [vitamin D] serum concentration and cancer risk, according to multiple types of analyses. These results suggest the importance of vitamin D for the prevention of cancer. Women with 25(OH)D concentrations ≥40 ng/ml had a significantly lower risk of cancer (~70 [percent]) compared to women with concentrations <20 ng/ml." Naturally Enjoy Sensible Sun Exposure Sensible sun exposure is important to your body's ability to produce vitamin D and for a number of other functions, including improving mental health,44 preventing chronic illnesses, improving cardiovascular health45 and reducing your risk of dying from heart disease or stroke.46 As there are thousands of different sunscreen products on the market, it may seem challenging to find one without hormone disruptors that is safe for pregnant women and children and that does not have carcinogenic potential. The worst products contain synthetic fragrances, retinyl palmitate and oxybenzones, and are created with nanoparticles. Safe choices are lotions or creams with zinc oxide, as it is stable in the sun and provides the best protection against UVA rays.47 It is important to ensure the product does not contain nanoparticles and protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Although not harmful, the higher SPF rating may engender a false sense of security, resulting in staying longer in the sun without adequate UVA protection. For more tips on sensible sun exposure, see my previous article, "Is Your Sunscreen Doing More Harm Than Good?"
