Rejuvenating Weekend Staycation at Marco Polo Ortigas Manila
Tumblr media
Life in the big city can get pretty hectic and stressful. Traffic is everywhere, so even when you decide to go on a vacation somewhere outside the city, the travel time and effort to get there and back sometimes makes you even more tired. That's why I love going on staycations because I get to truly rest and relax without having to go too far. That's also why Marco Polo Ortigas Manila is one of my favorite staycation destinations because of its Forbes Five Star amenities located right in the heart of the busy metropolis.
Tumblr media
It had been a while since my last staycation at Marco Polo Manila, so I was really happy when The Hungry Kat was invited back to #ExploreDiscoverExperience this award-winning luxury Sky Hotel. Marco Polo Ortigas Manila is the first purpose-built Marco Polo hotel in the Philippines which opened its doors in 2014. I have been a frequent guest of the hotel and its signature restaurants ever since it opened, but I had not been able to visit that much during the pandemic years. So I'm really excited to rediscover once again all the amenities and dining options that the hotel has to offer.
Tumblr media
My journey starts at the 24th floor lobby and reception area. Marco Polo Ortigas occupies the upper half of this towering 45-storey building, making it the city’s first Sky Hotel. It comes with 316 spacious and well-designed rooms and suites with contemporary Asian and Western interiors, all offering panoramic views of the busy city. Marco Polo Ortigas Manila is also a proud member of the Global Hotel Alliance, the world’s largest alliance of independent hotel brands, with over 40 brands and more than 800 hotels and resorts worldwide.
Tumblr media
Marco Polo Ortigas was one of the first hotels in the Philippines to earn the coveted Five Star rating from Forbes Travel Guide, the global authority on luxury travel since 1958. Considered as the Olympics in the hotel industry, this prestigious award giving body recognizes the most luxurious hotels, restaurants, and spas worldwide. I'm also happy to find out that since getting the award in 2017, the hotel has continued to receive this recognition for seven straight years.
Tumblr media
We checked in to our stylish Premier Room which are corner rooms that come with 51-61 square meters of comfort and a spectacular view of the city. It has a King sized bed and a spacious layout done in an elegant earth tone finish. The bright natural light from the huge windows give the room a refreshing and relaxing glow.
Tumblr media
The Premier Room also comes with a host of amenities that affirms its promise of class and comfort. These include an LCD TV with cable channels, a private executive desk, complimentary fruits, a Nespresso coffee machine and tea making facilities, an in-room safe and mini bar, and fast complimentary wifi connection that you can access throughout the hotel.
Tumblr media
The stress and hustle of the city simply melts away every time I stay at Marco Polo Manila.
Tumblr media
Welcome fruits and treats were provided inside when we arrived. Small gestures like these are truly appreciated by guests and makes them feel more at home whenever they stay.
Tumblr media
The bathroom is an area where I spend a lot of quality alone time, especially with its marble bathtub, rain shower, and luxury toiletries from The Merchant of Venice. I think I will give myself a warm bubble bath later this evening.
Tumblr media
The bathroom comes with separate sinks for couples who are on the go like us. Bathrobes are provided which you can also use for the swimming pool.
Tumblr media
Our Premier Room also gave us access to The Continental Club on the 44th floor which gives guests the highest luxury skyline living.
Tumblr media
Guests booked at the Continental Club rooms can get private seated check-in and check-out procedures on the 44th floor reception. This is better for those who value a bit more privacy during their stays.
Tumblr media
The Continental Club Lounge is open from 6:30am to 10:00pm and acts as an extension of your rooms. Here you can indulge in a private buffet breakfast, afternoon tea, all-day refreshments, and evening cocktails, all absolutely free.
Tumblr media
The lounge basically acts as a living room extension of your room where you can move around more freely with its bright and spacious surroundings.  Guests get exclusive access to the lounge where they can read a newspaper or magazine while relaxing in comfort. Smart casual attire is recommended for those visiting the lounge.
Tumblr media
Guests can also use the lounge’s private library and reading alcove. Aside from these, guests get complimentary use of their boardroom for up to two hours per stay and complimentary pressing and laundry service for one piece of garment. After checking in to our room, we immediately went to the Continental Club to have some refreshments.
Tumblr media
Afternoon Tea is offered daily starting at 2:30pm up to 4:30pm with a wide variety of teas and beverages. On display at the table were the Cheesy Spinach Quesadilla and Pastrami Focaccia Sandwich together with cookie crinkles, candies, assorted mini cakes, fruits, and more.
Tumblr media
So what other amenities can guests enjoy while staying at Marco Polo Manila? I love taking a dip at the Flow Swimming Pool which is located on the 22nd floor and is open from 7:00am to 10:00pm. This is an indoor, temperature-controlled swimming pool with a jacuzzi, shower room, and sauna for hotel guests.
Tumblr media
Located on the same floor is the Flow Fitness Center, a 24-hour gym that offers an energetic view of the Sierra Madre mountain ranges while you work out.
Tumblr media
But I was really looking forward to my pampering massage treatment at the Flow Spa which is just beside the fitness center. The Flow Spa offers a wide range of treatments and massage services perfect for unwinding and relaxation from 8:00am to 11:00pm. In-room service is also available all the way until 2:00am for those who want to stay inside their rooms.
Tumblr media
They have both single and couple’s treatment rooms which are perfect for that romantic getwaway. We booked the Flow Signature Massage (P3,740) which is a 90-minute treatment using a fusion of Eastern and Western techniques with a special blend of essential oils. This stress-relief massage also features Thai stretching and Hawaiian Lomi Lomi strokes which my body truly needs. After starting with a short foot bath, it was time for me to lie down and relax at this urban sanctuary on top of the city.
Tumblr media
My favorite period at the Continental Club Lounge would definitely be their Evening Cocktails from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. This is a pre-dinner affair where alcoholic beverages are served together with some light dishes.
Tumblr media
As the sun starts to set, the club lounge is one of the best places to stay at as the city lights up for the evening.
Tumblr media
Aside from the free-flowing beverages, you can also find some appetizers and hot dishes at the Evening Cocktails. I was delighted with the wide selection of items they had including Sisig Mussels, Pork Bulgogi Skewers, Seafood Alfredo, Kropek, Cheese Croquettes, Chicken Barbecue, and more.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
They also had some sweet desserts to complete the pre-dinner meal which can actually serve as a light dinner itself.
Tumblr media
Best of all, the evening cocktails lets guests choose from a variety of alcoholic beverages and drinks. We got to try their Classic Mojito and the Mimosa for our first round. There are many other cocktails that the bartender can whip up for you, or you can just get any of the wines or local and imported beers on the table. Watching the sunset on the hotel’s topmost floor with bountiful food and drinks is a great way to end any afternoon.
Tumblr media
For those who want to #ExploreDiscoverExperience this rejuvenating staycation, Marco Polo Ortigas Manila is offering their Spring Season promotion. Enjoy a 2-night stay with buffet breakfast for two at 10% off the Best Available Rates, plus 15% off food and beverage from their restaurants and bars. GHA Discovery members get an additional 10% off on room rates, and a total of 25% discount on food and beverage orders. Book your room from February 20 to April 27, 2024 and stay at Marco Polo Manila between March 1 to April 28, 2024. My stay isn't over yet, because next I'm going to visit Marco Polo Manila's signature dining options that truly makes a staycation here more rewarding and enjoyable. Ive, ‘Gayo Daejejeon’ + Japan’s NHK ‘Red and White Song Festival’..
Tumblr media
The girl group Ive will splendidly decorate the last day of 2022 with year-end stages in Korea and Japan.
Along with '2022 MBC Gayo Daejejeon' (hereinafter referred to as 'Gayo Daejejeon'), which will be broadcast on the 31st, Ive will meet fans by appearing in Japan's NHK year-end song festival 'Red and White Song Festival'.
Ive, who goes back and forth between Korea and Japan to end the year with fans through the year-end stage, departed for Japan today (30th) for the stage of ‘Red and White Song Contest’.
Previously, the 'Red and White Singing Match', which drew attention by announcing the news of their appearance when their official debut in Japan was less than a month ago, featured singers who were greatly loved in Japan throughout the year, and divided into red and white teams to present performances and compete against each other. A program with Ive plans to embroider the first year-end music festival in Japan with an eye-catching performance.
Ive, who proved his popularity in Japan by selecting the Japanese version of the first single title song 'ELEVEN' as the theme song for the virtual space event 'Virtual Adventure Island 2022' held by Fuji TV even before his official debut in Japan, is the representative of Fuji TV. Starting with the morning program 'Mezamashi TV', 'Mezamashi 8' and 'POP UP! ’ appeared in a series of live programs.
Also, even before their official debut, an unprecedented close coverage of the comeback of their third single “After LIKE” was aired through NHK’s special program “SONGS+PLUS,” confirming the high interest in the local area.
Japan's passionate interest in Ive can be confirmed through grades. In the recently announced Japan Amazon Music '2022 Best of K-POP (Best of K-POP 2022)', 'After Like' ranked first, 'LOVE DIVE' ranked 9th, and 'Eleven' ranked 24th, and Ive released It showed the dignity of ranking all the title songs of three single albums.
In addition, in the '2022 Best Sellers K-POP Single TOP 10' selected by Tower Records, 'Eleven' ranked first, 'Love Dive' ranked 5th, and 'After Like' ranked 6th, not only digital music but also It is attracting attention by achieving remarkable results in album performance.
As a result, Ive's stage at the first year-end song festival in Japan is drawing more attention.
In addition, on the 31st, in the sense of becoming one through the power of music and love, they will appear in the 'Gayo Daejejeon' under the theme of "With Love" to celebrate the end of the year with Korean fans.
Ive, who gave a splendid stage by clearly showing Ive's unique color through the year-end stages, ends 2022 with a performance exclusively for the 'Gayo Daejejeon'.
Ive, now in his first year of debut, has colored 2022 as ‘the year of Ive’. Through 'Love Dive', 'Best Song of the Year' at '2022 Melon Music Awards (MMA 2022)', 'Song of the Year' at '2022 MAMA Awards (2022 MAMA AWARDS)', '2022 Asian Artist Awards in Japan (2022 Asian Artist Awards)' AAA)''s 'Song of the Year', etc. Ive, who swept the grand prizes at various awards ceremonies, imprints Ive's presence once again with a variety of activities in 2023.
Meanwhile, on February 11 and 12, 2023, Ive will hold his first fan concert ‘The Prom Queens’ at Olympic Hall, Olympic Park, Seoul.

Analysis: Female directors are having a moment
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/analysis-female-directors-are-having-a-moment/
Analysis: Female directors are having a moment
In the year of our Lord 2021, it feels like female directors are finally getting more opportunities — and more acknowledgment.
Take, for example, this past Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards.
Three women were nominated in the best director category for the first time.
Only one woman had ever won the category prior to Sunday, and that was Barbra Streisand in 1984 for “Yentl.”
Here are some of the women who are making waves and headlines in Hollywood:
Chloé Zhao: The “Nomadland” director became the first woman of Asian descent and only the second woman ever to win the best director award at this year’s Golden Globes.
The film’s star, Frances McDormand, told The New York Times Zhao really understood the actress’ affinity for the character who packs up her life in a van and becomes part of an older community of people who work odd jobs across the country.
“Chloé tapped into the truth of it which was at different points of my life, I’ve said to my husband, ‘I can’t take this anymore, I’m dropping out,'” McDormand said.
Regina King: The acclaimed actress-turned-director was up against Zhao at the Globes.
She has been on quite a streak in her career the past few years, including nabbing the best supporting actress Oscar for “If Beale Street Could Talk” in 2019.
Now, the former child star is being hailed for her big screen directorial debut in “One Night in Miami,” adapted from Kemp Powers’ stage play about a meeting between Cassius Clay, Jim Brown, Sam Cooke and Malcolm X.
The night of the Golden Globes, King told “E!” it was “bittersweet” that she, Zhao and Emerald Fennell marked the first trio of female nominees, given that this is 2021.
Emerald Fennell: Another actress who has stepped behind the camera (we are starting to see a trend here), she has received critical acclaim for writing, directing and producing the thriller “Promising Young Woman,” starring Carey Mulligan.
The movie is not only cheeky but gets into some uncomfortable territory, so much so that it has been praised for turning the revenge genre on its ear.
“It’s just part of the fun of making something, the smoke and mirrors and the misdirections,” Fennell told IndieWire. “I love all that stuff, all of my favorite movies have that sort of thing in them. It’s very interesting, isn’t it, how much we want violence, how much instinctively as an audience we’re begging for blood.”
Robin Wright: “The House of Cards” star did some directing on that Netflix series, so she wasn’t a total neophyte when it came to both starring in and directing her first feature film, “Land.”
Wright plays a woman struck by a family tragedy who gives up her successful life in the big city and moves to a remote area in Wyoming.
She told Women’s Wear Daily that she was delighted with the film’s reception so far.
“We feel so blessed that people are feeling the movie,” Wright said. “It is very relevant to what’s going on today, of being disconnected from our loved ones. We’re not living the norm. The message in this movie is about that very thing.”
These leading female directors represent just a handful of creatives proving women are making inroads on the Hollywood scene.
The numbers don’t lie: For the second consecutive year, the percentages of women directing top-grossing films increased, reaching “recent historic highs,” while the overall percentages of women working in key behind-the-scenes roles remained relatively stable, according to a study by San Diego State University released in January.
“Women accounted for 16% of directors working on the top 100 grossing films in 2020, up from 12% in 2019 and 4% in 2018,” wrote study author Martha M. Lauzen, founder and executive director of SDSU’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film. “Women comprised 18% of directors on the top 250 films in 2020, up from 13% in 2019 and 8% in 2018.”
A rising tide raises all ships, especially when a woman is at the helm, so here’s to more female directors on the horizon.
For your weekend
Three things to watch:
‘Coming 2 America’
Prince Akeem and Semmi are heading back to Queens, New York. Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall reprise their respective roles for the sequel to the hit 1988 film.
This time the prince is in search of his son and heir to the kingdom of Zamunda. My question is what have the rose petal droppers been up to all this time?
“Coming 2 America” starts streaming Friday on Amazon Prime.
‘Boss Level’
Former special forces agent Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo) is trapped in a time loop that constantly repeats the day of his murder. To break the cycle, he must hunt down Col. Clive Ventor (Mel Gibson) while also trying to save his ex-wife (Naomi Watts).
That sounds like some seriously fast-paced action.
“Boss Level” starts streaming Friday on Hulu.
‘Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell’
March 9 marks the 24th anniversary of the unsolved murder of rapper Christopher Wallace, aka Biggie Smalls or The Notorious B.I.G., at age 24.
Arguably one of the best and most beloved hip-hop artists of all time, Wallace is the subject of a new doc that looks at the legacy of his life and death. Currently streaming on Netflix, with “rare footage and in-depth interviews, this documentary celebrates the life of The Notorious B.I.G. on his journey from hustler to rap king.”
So, call your friends and let them know so your crew run-run-run, your crew run-run to catch it.
Two things to listen to:
Sweden has blessed us with the likes of ABBA and Spotify. Now add Zara Larsson to that list.
The 23-year-old singer, who got her start as a youngster on a TV talent show, is dropping her third studio album, “Poster Girl,” on Friday.
March is the month we celebrate women — and who is more empowering than Oprah Winfrey?
The answer to that is no one.
Check out “Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversation‪s” podcast if you want to feel motivated, inspired or just need the uplifting vibe that is trademark Oprah. ‬
One thing to talk about:
Are we over awards shows?
My Appradab colleague Brian Lowry reported that “Globes ratings plummeted more than 60% from the 18.3 million viewers who watched last year, per Nielsen data, to an average audience of 6.9 million.”
Yikes.
With the pandemic going on you would think plenty of people would be tuning in to shows like the Golden Globes, but, apparently, not. Even in a “normal year,” there seems to be less enthusiasm for award shows than there used to be, and that begs the question if Hollywood needs to find a different way to celebrate the industry.
The pandemic is causing us all to reevaluate things.
Something to sip on
Looking for a new show to watch? We asked some of our friends around Appradab what TV binge has helped them decompress in the time of Covid.
Phil Mattingly, senior White House correspondent
I basically have an encyclopedic knowledge of Bravo shows due to my wife’s fandom/the disappearance of sports the first few month of Covid. Not sure I should acknowledge that publicly.
Alisyn Camerota, Appradab New Day anchor
I’ve been watching “Succession.” It depicts a dysfunctional, rotten world, and somehow I find that soothingly distracting from our daily stress.
Stephanie Elam, Appradab correspondent
Fantasy, take me away! I’ve turned to shows that allow me to escape reality — “Once Upon a Time” with my daughter, “Lovecraft Country” and “His Dark Materials” without her.
Ana Cabrera, Appradab Newsroom anchor
“Criminal Minds” on Netflix. I know it’s old, but I’m a newcomer to it! I’m a sucker for mystery and suspense.
Pop back here next Thursday for all the latest entertainment happenings that matter.

As found by @LaLa_Purple_BTS, the music used during the VCR is "Slipstream," by Audiomachine. Wisha also noticed that extracts from BTS' Festa Dinner Party could be heard. The text seen on the mirror is “I show not only your true side but also your fake side” written backward. It’s a nod to the mirror of Erised in Harry Potter, that has a similar writing on it and happens to show not one’s reflection but what one’s desire.
The VCR was followed by a choreography performed in a setting similar to the one used for the E version of Love Yourself 結 Answer. At the end of "FAKE LOVE," the boys replayed the supplementary scene already seen during the BTS Comeback Show and concluded it by disappearing like in the extended version of the "FAKE LOVE" MV.
Concerning the "IDOL" stage, DoolsetBangtan listed the traditional elements that were used. The Youtube channel 바이스톰 By Storm also made a video to present the different types of instruments and another one to present the traditional elements. Jin’s, SUGA’s, j-hope’s, and Jimin’s hanbok were designed by the shop 천의무봉 (tweets from the designer 조영기, blog post #1 by the designer 한지혜, blog post #2). Hwang Leesle also participated in the design of Jimin’s hanbok (her tweets, her video). Arata Dance School did an analysis of j-hope’s solo dance.

KRD Media Roundup No. 20
Since the start of 2020, the Philippine Broadcasting Service' FM Radio division went on reprogramming strategies both on 87.5 FM1 and 104.3 FM2 to maintain competition among new players in the FM landscape as its deputy director-general Carlo Jose Villo resigned his post. Recently-reformatted stations Neo Retro 105.9 and Q105 are now being targeted by 2 Government-owned and operated radio stations in Mega Manila in terms of audience shares and format. These two stations are currently on automation until further notice. In Davao City, FM1 87.5 DXFO shutted down operations since January 1st in order to adjust the configurations including the transmission and at the same time, the move of its studios to the soon-to-be-completed Mindanao Media Hub. Meanwhile, 104.3 FM2 shortens Sunday broadcast operations from 19 hours to 16 hours (from 5am to 9pm), while the Monday to Saturday broadcast hours are intact.
In other developments, Neo Retro 105.9 officially launched on New Year's Day with its programming from Sunday to Thursday 5am-12mn and Friday to Saturday 5am-1am the next day.
13 Days later, Q Radio 105.1 officially launched with some of its DJ's from FM1 who are now jocks of the station. Q Radio operates 20 hours daily from 4am to 12mn and plays CHR-Top40 format. Q105 is operated under Horizon of the Sun Communications, Inc. headed by the Mother-Daughter tandem of Lolita Ching (President & CEO) and Louella Ching (Vice-President), who are also the brains behind the longest-running bi-lingual program Chinatown TV and its daily bi-lingual news program CNTV (Chinese News TV) both of which airs on IBC 13. HSC is under an airtime lease agreement with Mareco Broadcasting Network in which it will expand broadcast to Q99 Bacolod, Q90 Cebu, and Q93 Davao very soon while the Baguio City relay has already flipped since it is heard from 105.1 Manila in the same frequency. The old Crossover format that has been existing for 25 years has migrated to its online broadcast through Crossover Online app on IOS and Android.
DZBR Bible Radio has shutted down its transmission site in Tanauan, Batangas due to the effect of the Taal Volcano eruption. Although the radio feed remains off the air until further notice, Bible Radio continues its broadcast on the web and via mobile app while the transmitter is undergoing upgrades from its current 10KW transmission, it will soon boost its transmission to 25KW and soon, 50KW.

Finally, 120-Year old Manila Bulletin has unveiled its refreshed logo last October 2019, a first in almost a century. The keystone element in the middle part of the logo which was first seen in the 1920's has updated in a lean & simple design, thus 'The Exponent of Philippine Progress' appearing at the upper part of the masthead is now appearing below the logo, simplifying as 'The Exponent of Philippine Progress Since 1900'. From September 2019 to January 2020 and on the eve of the anniversary, the multimedia organization ran a series of important headlines back in the day as part of the 120-day countdown to the 120th Anniversary last Sunday, Feb. 2nd. You may watch the evolution of Manila Bulletin in the video below for a simplified history of the 2nd oldest newspaper/news organization in the Philippines.

Analysis: Female directors are having a moment In the year of our Lord 2021, it feels like female directors are finally getting more opportunities — and more acknowledgment. Take, for example, this past Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards. Three women were nominated in the best director category for the first time. Only one woman had ever won the category prior to Sunday, and that was Barbra Streisand in 1984 for “Yentl.” Here are some of the women who are making waves and headlines in Hollywood: Chloé Zhao: The “Nomadland” director became the first woman of Asian descent and only the second woman ever to win the best director award at this year’s Golden Globes. It’s very interesting, isn’t it, how much we want violence, how much instinctively as an audience we’re begging for blood.” Robin Wright: “The House of Cards” star did some directing on that Netflix series, so she wasn’t a total neophyte when it came to both starring in and directing her first feature film, “Land.” Wright plays a woman struck by a family tragedy who gives up her successful life in the big city and moves to a remote area in Wyoming. She told Women’s Wear Daily that she was delighted with the film’s reception so far. “We feel so blessed that people are feeling the movie,” Wright said. “It is very relevant to what’s going on today, of being disconnected from our loved ones. We’re not living the norm. The message in this movie is about that very thing.” These leading female directors represent just a handful of creatives proving women are making inroads on the Hollywood scene. “Women comprised 18% of directors on the top 250 films in 2020, up from 13% in 2019 and 8% in 2018.” A rising tide raises all ships, especially when a woman is at the helm, so here’s to more female directors on the horizon. For your weekend Three things to watch: ‘Coming 2 America’ Prince Akeem and Semmi are heading back to Queens, New York. ‘Boss Level’ Former special forces agent Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo) is trapped in a time loop that constantly repeats the day of his murder. To break the cycle, he must hunt down Col. Clive Ventor (Mel Gibson) while also trying to save his ex-wife (Naomi Watts). That sounds like some seriously fast-paced action. “Boss Level” starts streaming Friday on Hulu. ‘Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell’ March 9 marks the 24th anniversary of the unsolved murder of rapper Christopher Wallace, aka Biggie Smalls or The Notorious B.I.G., at age 24. Arguably one of the best and most beloved hip-hop artists of all time, Wallace is the subject of a new doc that looks at the legacy of his life and death. Currently streaming on Netflix, with “rare footage and in-depth interviews, this documentary celebrates the life of The Notorious B.I.G. on his journey from hustler to rap king.” So, call your friends and let them know so your crew run-run-run, your crew run-run to catch it. Two things to listen to: Sweden has blessed us with the likes of ABBA and Spotify. ‬ One thing to talk about: Are we over awards shows? My CNN colleague Brian Lowry reported that “Globes ratings plummeted more than 60% from the 18.3 million viewers who watched last year, per Nielsen data, to an average audience of 6.9 million.” Yikes. Something to sip on Looking for a new show to watch? We asked some of our friends around CNN what TV binge has helped them decompress in the time of Covid. Phil Mattingly, senior White House correspondent I basically have an encyclopedic knowledge of Bravo shows due to my wife’s fandom/the disappearance of sports the first few month of Covid. Not sure I should acknowledge that publicly. Alisyn Camerota, CNN New Day anchor I’ve been watching “Succession.” It depicts a dysfunctional, rotten world, and somehow I find that soothingly distracting from our daily stress. Stephanie Elam, CNN correspondent Fantasy, take me away! I’ve turned to shows that allow me to escape reality — “Once Upon a Time” with my daughter, “Lovecraft Country” and “His Dark Materials” without her. Ana Cabrera, CNN Newsroom anchor “Criminal Minds” on Netflix. I know it’s old, but I’m a newcomer to it! I’m a sucker for mystery and suspense. Pop back here next Thursday for all the latest entertainment happenings that matter. Source link Orbem News #Analysis #directors #entertainment #female #Femaledirectorsarehavingamoment-CNN #Moment

Awkwafina Wants To (Safely) Share A Beer With You Over The Holidays
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/awkwafina-wants-to-safely-share-a-beer-with-you-over-the-holidays/
Awkwafina Wants To (Safely) Share A Beer With You Over The Holidays
Awkwafina partners with Heineken for a holiday beer campaign.
Awkwafina is on a roll. The Farewall star kicked off the year by nabbing a Golden Globe for her dynamic performance in the Lulu Wang comedy-drama. Although it was the 77th iteration of the annual awards ceremony, she became the very first performer of Asian descent to take home a trophy for lead actress in a film category.
The honor came on the heels of her breakout comedic turn in the smash hit Crazy Rich Asians. And in the months ahead she’s poised to become one of the biggest names in Hollywood, with roles lined up in the MCU’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as well as two Disney films—including the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
But in the meantime, just like the rest of us, she’s been trying to safely steer her way through the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently that involved a partnership with Heineken. Along with the Dutch beer producer she launched a campaign called Bestie Gift Ever. It offers friends a chance to surprise their ‘besties’ by sending them a cardboard cutout of themselves—along with a six-pack, of course. The theme promotes seasonal cheer while respecting social distancing guidelines that will regrettably keep most of us separated throughout the holidays.
I recently sat down with the award-winning actress (over Zoom, of course) to discuss her recent successes as well as her future plans once COVID is finally in the rear view. The exclusive interview has been edited for length and clarity.
You were just in Sydney, Australia filming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. What’s it like to be on a foreign set in 2020?
When you get off the plane they bring you to a place that you’re not really sure where you’re going. And it’s a guarded quarantine. I’m on my second one now in [Vancouver] Canada. You kind of get used to it. It’s really not bad—I mean, I got dressed today, so that’s nice.
What does your quarantine regimen entail?
Well, you’d like to think you’re going to write the next great novel during that two week period—it never happens. I think the first couple of days you go through an existential, ‘oh my God, what I am doing’. And as that dissipates it becomes this job of ‘let me fill in the hours’. Lots of video games, lots of catching up on movies and TV shows. Just stupid things—like cleaning up your general area.
Did you enjoy any special drinking experiences this year, despite all the setbacks?
Well, I was able to send my best friend a pretty ridiculous gift where we shared a beer [by way of a mini-Heineken bar that was dropped off on her lawn]. But I think the act of just doing something simple like [sharing a beer], you realize how special it is now.
And before the pandemic, how and what do you usually like to drink?
When I first started drinking at a legal age, I remember being like— ‘whoa, is there really a transformation that occurs? Do I leave my body? What happens?’
I remember my dad had some kind of apricot schnapps and it was horrible. I downed it. I didn’t leave my body—I just turned red.
The funny thing about Heineken is that was my dad’s favorite beer. And that was probably the first beer I ever had a sip of. I like beer, but I’m not a big wine fan—My skin gets really hot.

Have you gotten into cocktail culture at all as it’s been booming over the past few years?
Here and there. Some things like when adding a pinch of an ingredient that you’ve never used for anything else—I don’t really understand that. With Asian people, and I don’t know if this is scientific, but for me, my Asian flush is aggravated when I have a lot of sugary drinks. So what usually helps for me when it comes to alcohol is having something that’s not cray-cray. Just something basic like [vodka and soda].
You spent a lot of time in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur when filming Crazy Rich Asians and the cocktail scene in that part of the world is truly exceptional, did you get to experience that at all?
KL had this really cool speakeasy — I’d never been to that part of Asia so I was [really impressed] by the cocktail culture there. I loved spending time in both cities—Singapore definitely has that vibe that it’s like ‘crazy rich Asians’, but I loved both cities, that was a very special time.
Where are you most excited to go to when travel becomes safe again?
Honestly, back to New York. I really want to go back [home], I miss it a lot. I haven’t been back [this year]. And to get a Knicks foam finger.
Your family used to own a Cantonese restaurant. Did you grow up cooking for yourself a lot? And if so, did that background come in handy during lockdown?
I hardboiled an egg or two. No, I haven’t really cooked. I’ve made reservations, as they say, except not—because we live in a pandemic.
What restaurant are you most looking forward to visiting when you finally make it back home?
I’m excited to hit up Taiwanese Gourmet—it’s my favorite Chinese restaurant in New York. It’s in Elmhurst, it’s a Taiwanese diner, it’s really good.
2021 is going to be a huge year for you with Disney and entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I don’t wanna say that’s going to be stressful, but…
No, there’s that. Thank you for instilling that fear in me. I wasn’t scared, but now I am [laughs]. I’m looking forward to it all.

The Many Obstacles of Mulan
https://ift.tt/2CUVT60
s
Disney’s move to premiere Mulan exclusively on Disney+ sent shock waves through the movie exhibition industry, but it’s only one of the potential obstacles that has beleaguered this eagerly anticipated film from the onset. From its production announcement to its premiere, Mulan has faced more trials and tribulations than any other film this year, and that’s a pretty competitive category in 2020. The pandemic has been just one hurdle for Mulan, a “Chinese-assisting” American production being released in the midst of rising tensions between the two superpowers. From rumors of whitewashing to issues of cultural appropriation to political boycotts, here is a breakdown of the controversies and challenges Mulan has had to deal with and/or anticipate in the lead up to its release…
Mulan’s Shifting Release Date & Plan
Even before COVID-19 reared its ugly head, Mulan endured an ever-moving release date. (Which, to be fair, is not so uncommon these days when it comes to major Hollywood blockbusters.) Originally fast-tracked for a 2018 release, Mulan was then postponed to late 2019, then delayed once more to 2020. In 2020, Mulan was slated for a March 27th wide release, and even held a star-studded Hollywood premiere at the Dolby Theater on March 9th. But only a few days after that premiere, the pandemic shut down theaters worldwide, forcing Disney to delay Mulan further.
Disney tried to rally by rescheduling the theatrical release for July 24th, but, as the severity of the pandemic grew, that date too had to be pushed to August 21st, a date that was later unset in late July. Early this August, Mulan’s release was moved to VOD on Disney+ for an additional fee of $30 (prices vary slightly internationally) on September 4th. The announcement rattled many fans, who not only felt the fee was too expensive but had hoped to see it on the big screen. The announcement also hit the already-suffering movie distribution market hard, particularly in the UK, where theaters have begun to reopen and where movie theaters are eager for any big film that might bring audiences back and revitalize their industry.
The Complications of Mulan Courting the Chinese Box Office
From its inception, the $200 million tent-pole has aspired to be one of the biggest global blockbusters of 2020. Based on the performance of previous live action remakes, Disney no doubt hopes for a $85-90 million U.S. opening weekend. What’s more, Hollywood makes up to 70% of its revenue overseas, which makes the Chinese box office, the second most profitable film market in the world, a major target for any contemporary big-budget release. In 2018, Hollywood movies earned $3.2 billion in China, with Disney taking home $700 million. Last year, Avengers: Endgame earned $614 million in China under the Disney banner. And, after all, Mulan is a Chinese legend. To cater to the market, the film stacked the cast with Chinese A-listers and veteran stars like Cheng Pei-Pei, Gong Li, Jet Li, and Donnie Yen. It was a calculated gamble, but the odds of a huge payout were favorable. (That was until the world drew that unexpected COVID-19 card and all bets for all movies were off.)
But Disney has an uphill battle to fight when it comes to convincing Chinese audiences that it knows how to make a good adaptation of the Mulan legend. Although the 1998 animated film was a successful commerical blockbuster, earning over $304 million as well as winning several Annie Awards and receiving some Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, in China, the film was a complete flop. After Disney’s The Lion King became one of the highest grossing Hollywood films to be released in China at the time, Disney had high hopes for Mulan. However, while Mulan is a beloved Chinese legend that dates to the 6th century, the Chinese audience felt that Disney’s version was too westernized. To them, Disney’s Mulan did not even look Chinese.
When the Mulan trailer dropped in China, it got 1.5 billion views in just a few days, but also some criticism. The trailer showed that the film depicts Mulan’s home as a tulou, a traditional round house from southern China during the Ming Dynasty. The Ming period was about a millennium later than Mulan’s time and, as she was a northerner, she would not have lived in such a house. Disney, despite the apparent efforts to court Chinese audiences, was called out again for its insensitivity to Chinese culture.  In mid-August, an official poster released in China was mocked online for appearing dated and ugly.
Hollywood Whitewashing Concerns
When the Mulan reboot was announced, the film drew immediate concerns of whitewashing. At the time, Ghost in the Shell, a live-action adaptation of the beloved Japanese manga series, was in production with Scarlett Johansson in the lead role, and was drawing significant criticism from the Asian-American community for its casting of Johansson, a white actress, for a story that takes place in Japan and, in its original form, features all Japanese characters. The casting was only the latest example in Hollywood’s long history of whitewashing.
Following the announcement that Mulan would be getting a live-action reboot, concerns that Hollywood would choose to whitewash the central roles soon followed online. There was even a hoax report announcing that Scarlett herself was cast as Mulan. Rumors circulated that a white male lead would be introduced, based on an alleged leaked script written by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin, spurring fans to launch the hashtag #MakeMulanRight. To its credit, Mulan has an entirely Asian cast, including Chinese-born American actress Crystal Liu Yifei (best known to Hollywood for her role in the Jackie Chan and Jet Li film The Forbidden Kingdom) in the lead role.
Mulan Eschews the Disney Reboot Formula
Mulan is an outlier in the current era of live action Disney reboots in that it is not afraid to make significant changes in both format and content from its animated source material. This hasn’t come without criticism, of course, especially as most of the Disney reboot era so far has catered toward nostalgia viewing. The live-action Mulan will not be a musical, a decision that caused many fans of the animated original to express disappointment when the announcement was made. Additionally, it became clear during marketing that the new film would not feature some of the cherished characters from the original, such as Mushu and Cri-kee. Some in the LGBTQ community criticized the removal of Li Shang, a character who is sometimes interpreted as bisexual because of his attraction to Ping (Mulan, disguised as a man). It’s worth noting that these are the characters that were rejected by Chinese audiences, and that they were added to the Mulan legend for the original animated Disney version.
The #BoycottMulan Controversy
Late last year, Crystal Liu Yifei came under fire for her pro-police politics. Crystal has 65 million followers on the Chinese platform Weibo and posted the hashtag #IAlsoSupportTheHongKongPolice. This upset Hong Kongers protesting for democratic reforms (and pro-democracy sympathizers around the world) who started the hashtag #BoycottMulan. The controversy spilled over to Facebook and Twitter, resulting in the deletion of nearly a thousand troll accounts. (Note that both Facebook and Twitter are blocked by mainland China’s Great Firewall.) Since the initial controversy, other Chinese celebrities have voiced their support for Beijing, including Jackie Chan and Crystal’s Mulan co-star Donnie Yen.
Meanwhile, in the United States, anti-Asian racism is on the rise. Following the President’s labeling of COVID-19 as the “Chinese virus” and amidst the general fraying of American-Chinese political relations, there has been an uptick in anti-Chinese sentiment in America. In March, a promotional Mulan poster at a bus stop in Pasadena, California was vandalized. It’s unclear, at this point, what role if any the current political climate could play in Mulan‘s performance.

Disney+ New Releases: September 2020
By Alec Bojalad
On September 4, Mulan will play in theaters in regions where Disney+ is not available, such as Singapore and Malaysia. Like with the U.K., China’s theaters have already reopened, as the country has contained the pandemic more successfully than the U.S. Mulan has been approved for Chinese release, but the date has not been formally announced at the time of this writing. This will put it head-to-head against the other major 2020 Hollywood blockbuster, Tenet, which has been and will be released theatrically in 70 countries, including China and in limited capacity in the U.S.
Time will tell if Disney’s Premium Access VOD will succeed. Regardless, Mulan looks to be a panoramic big screen experience, so hopefully it will get shown in theaters someday. Whatever happens, in the larger picture, Disney’s production is just the latest chapter for Mulan, whose tale of overcoming obstacles has inspired for centuries.
Mulan premieres on Disney+ on September 4.
