He Xiaopeng VS Elon Musk
He Xiaopeng and Lei Jun are both from Hubei Province. He graduated from the Computer Department of South China University of Technology in 1999 and started UC with his colleagues after years working for a foreign company. Ding Lei, who was an Internet business man back then, offered him 800,000 yuan as a loan and an office space for free.
With his team in 2004, He Xiaopeng founded UC and launched a national app called the UC mobile browser. In 2014, things happened like a dream, when UC was acquired by Alibaba. The 37-year-old He Xiaopeng came to the spotlight with skyrocketing fortunes which made him one of the new billionaires in China. The life goal such as buying a house, a car, a yacht and alcohol as well as accumulating wealth was realized in a lightning speed. But he was not happy.
Although the merger and acquisition of UC by Alibaba was China's biggest acquisition news of the year, the mobile browser was not of Ali's main businesses. In an annual executive meeting of Alibaba running from the noon to the evening, He Xiaopeng heard the world “UC” only once in the overwhelming discussion about payment and e-commerce. In addition, the Ali mobile business group and the Ali Games in the charge of He Xiaopeng were not market leaders of the time.
Despite the spacious office provided by Alibaba and no longer having to borrowing the space from Ding Lei, He Xiaopeng often locked himself in with a dignified look. Empty, anxious and hesitant, he was always on the phone, talking to all kinds of people, even restless during breaks.

More than 20 years ago before graduation, while some of He Xiaopeng’s classmates were playing computer games in the dormitory, he had a conversation with Huang Ronghai on the dormitory balcony: " I want financial freedom when I am 40 years old, then retire".
At that time, Huang Ronghai thought that financial freedom was out of reach. On the day when He Xiaopeng turned 40 years old, he had achieved financial freedom for three years, but retirement had become a distant prospect. Again He Xiaopeng talked to Huang Ronghai: "I think three traits are the most important for a person: the self, his family and career. Now that I have a family and a career, I want to be myself.”
In 2017, he revealed to Lei Jun that he might quit the current job and started to make vehicles. His old friend Liu Qin was also present. Lei Jun warned him: "the possibility of failure is very high. You are no longer a nobody, and this project must require massive investment by yourself.”
“How much are you willing to invest?”, asked Lei Jun.
He Xiaopeng immediately replied: “$100 million.”
On August 29, 2017, the seventh day when He Xiaopeng left Ali, he started a full-time position at Xiaopeng Motors. On the same day, he posted a Wechat moment: “It’s a cycle of entrepreneurship, bitter, sweet and salty. I now return with hope still like a teenager.”
Gloria Ai: Why did you bother yourself with this unrelated and inconsistent entrepreneurial venture at the age of 36? This second venture will be difficult.
He Xiaopeng: Hardware is a new domain for me.
Gloria Ai: So there is no making without breaking. You have to jump and fall into this abyss before climbing up, right?
He Xiaopeng: It’s learning from scratch.
The year He Xiaopeng founded Xiaopeng Motors, he was richer than Elon Musk when he started Tesla. For the past six years in the motor industry, He Xiaopeng has kept the record of being the most frequent self-funded entrepreneur among the top three new vehicle manufacturers in China. Before going public, He Xiaopeng has invested more than $317 million (about 2.2 billion yuan) in Xiaopeng Motors.
At the CES 2018, the 41-year-old He Xiaopeng showed the courage of a newborn calf not scared of tigers. He remarked: " Elon Musk is better than me now, but I may be better than him in the future.”
Gloria Ai: But to be honest, what do you think is the gap between you and Elon Musk?
He Xiaopeng: I think the gap doesn’t exist. He is a winner in his field. I have my logic of thinking. We are both working on some travel revolutionary changes to make our lives safer, greener and better.
Elon Musk often posted on his Twitter that we are not good enough because he does not know us. In other words, China's own manufacturing enterprises should prove ourselves with true quality and capacities, not with words. As a saying goes: “Easy to say, hard to do.”
Gloria Ai: I agree that respect is earned. That is, I get in your car, I don't want to compliment you, but I really think this car is made with heart and devotion. But has the name Xiaopeng been disputed?
He Xiaopeng: As you know, there are many Chinese brands with foreign names. In fact, there are a large number of non-Chinese names in China. But Ford, Tesla and the like are named after scientists and Bosch is also a person's name. So why not using a Chinese name for a brand to meet the world? I think if you use your name for a brand, the brand itself is a trust and a responsibility.

Gloria Ai: It’s quite magical that you did a good job in mobile Internet, but you suddenly departed from Alibaba to the track of car building. Your entrepreneurial endeavour of shifting your focus from software to hardware has been six years, right? What is the biggest challenge from 2014 to 2020?
He Xiaopeng: There have been too many challenges. I regard them as challenges in different stages. I used to know a lot about an industry, but now I basically become someone being respected but not trusted, because I really don' t understand the industry in a professional way.
In the past, we didn’t involve manufacturing, branding, expensive sales at such high prices and post-sales services in the Internet domain. We only knew about operations and users, so there are a lot of challenges in learning. Without the support by so many employees, my classmates, and customers, we can’t achieve today’s result and the process is not easy at all.
From the "front wave" of the Internet to the "back wave" of intelligent vehicles, it is not the extension of an industry, but a butterfly change. As a cross-border entrepreneur, in his view, the positioning of Internet car building should be transformed from the engineer dimension to the user's point of view, so that a team of traditional manufacturing and R & D can be Internetized, and even develop its software and hardware independently. The journey will be long and great endeavors should be made.
In 2017, the production base of Xiaopeng Motors which is worth tens of billions yuan was launched in Zhaoqing City, with a total of 10 billion yuan invested in the first and second phase. The self-built factory of Xiaopeng Motors is the only new vehicle brand with self-production and OEM qualifications in China. It has independently designed and developed the full stack autopilot technology and intelligent voice recognition system, including dynamical system and electrical/ electronic architecture. Meanwhile, it is fully autonomous at the core hardware level. Xiaopeng Motors is also the only company in the new vehicle force to develop battery management system (BMS) and battery pack at the same time.
The prospectus shows that Xiaopeng Motors has invested as much as 3.75 billion yuan in R & D in the past two years, with 43% of its employees of more than 1600 people working in R & D. He Xiaopeng understated the surprising ratio before: "Nearly 70% of the staff worked in R & D, and the number decreased to only 43% this year. In a rough calculation, it was more than 2,600 people.
Behind the influential new force of vehicle manufacturing, there have been rounds of large expenditure.
Gloria Ai: Where is the source of your courage to invest huge resources and funds to do independent research and development?
He Xiaopeng: There are many OEMs in China. I think we mainly count on the resource dependent type. Meanwhile, we initiate more partners to create a resource pool. It actually costs at least 500 million to 1 billion yuan to build a type of car but this fund basically goes to mould building and testing. So I believe we have to invest in sections that can accumulate liking growing a snowball, including the valuable R & D, branding, sales channels, good reputation from customers, which is a long-term treasure.
What is the intellectualization of Xiaopeng Motors?
Gloria Ai: I think that China's new vehicle making force has been questioned for a long time, because we constantly invest like burning money and lose money. What is the essential reason behind Xiaopeng Motors's popularity in 2020 particularly when the Sino-US relation is delicate? Have you ever thought about it?
He Xiaopeng: Three months ago, most people were actually not optimistic about this track. Tesla has made many people believe that vehicle manufacturing presents the future.
Gloria Ai: So you need to thank Elon Musk, for his high stock price performance.
He Xiaopeng: Yes. I think since the beginning of the year, this future has been predicted by top investors a few months ago. They conducted work, research, and took part three months later. Because of their engagement, more people were attracted to the market.
“If you really want to find a hard thing to do, you can try building a car.”Despite of this heart-felt remark, He Xiaopeng was full of excitement.
The young members in the team were from Gac Group, SAIC, BMW, Lamborghini and other well-known enterprises. They spent every day studying intelligent vehicles in a flat with two bedrooms and one living room. On Wednesdays and Saturdays after work, they met with He Xiaopeng, who was like a godfather to pump up this young group. When the team found hard to poach a talent, they would bring the people to Xiaopeng and had a chat together. He Xiaopeng began to describe the bright future of intelligent vehicle manufacturing. In the end, "about 30% - 40% of members were persuaded by me.”
Whenever frustrated, He Xiaopeng would offer "blind" advices: "It’s quite normal. I have experienced bitter and harder when I was young." In each meeting, He Xiaopeng would give "blind" ideas: “How about a lift camera and something like Transformers?”
The idea of lifting the camera was realized, and has become an essential selling point for the first model G3 a few years later. On the idea inspired by Transformers, He Xiaopeng later consulted two famous professors from overseas universities, and they replied, theoretically it worked, but it might not have commercial and practical values. He Xiaopeng was not convinced: “Let’s retain the idea now, which doesn’t mean it won’t work in the future.”
He Xiaopeng firmly believes that intelligent vehicles are the future. While Xpeng P7 came out, someone compared it with Tesla Model 3, but Xiaopeng's goal was never to rival with Model 3, but to become the No.1 B-class sedan.
Gloria Ai: I have a challenging question. What’s the selling point of Xiaopeng Motors? It’s about intelligence. But would a smart phone manufacturer boast everyday that it sells intelligent systems? Shouldn't intelligent vehicles be smart? This is the question I raised for you.
He Xiaopeng: It’s a very good question. I believe that many people would agree that intelligent vehicles are the future. Xiaopeng Motors has taken the deepest research in intellectualization and is one the earliest pioneers of all China's OEM manufacturers. It also invested the most. Now people begin to recognize Xiaopeng Motors as the most intelligent vehicle, but our business is in a small scale. We have to make it bigger and deeper, which is the first thing we should do.
The second thing to focus on is to rethink how software produces the value of data and the value of the overall data engine from the data resource, when we have achieved a good performance in intellectualization and software.
The third aspect is whether the hardware should be changed in the influence of changes of software, with a new usage scenario, which you can identify in our third and fourth model, as well as the following models.
Changes in hardware can also lead to huge revolutions in hardware, some of which will improve your experience and reduce your procurement costs. Pioneers must be able to think about your strengths and weak points.
The first page of the prospectus of Xiaopeng Motors writes the mission of the company: "The data-driven changes in intelligent electric vehicles lead the way of future travels.”
The fantastic future of intelligence and changes are all inseparable from the support of capital. What did investors read from the listing of Xiaopeng Motors?
Gloria Ai: the Morningside Venture Capital you represent has been a major investor and shareholder from the Series-A funding to the Series-C funding. I would like to know whether you are optimistic about the competitiveness of He Xiaopeng as the founder, or the competitiveness of the Xpeng products?
Liu Qin: Our investment philosophy is to invest in people. We must have invested in this company because of He Xiaopeng. From the perspective of an entrepreneur, I have also expressed the wish to invest in entrepreneurial people. How can I put it?
Firstly, We would like to choose those really good and entrepreneurial candidates, who has a clear and simple entrepreneurial motivation. It may sometimes appear silly, naive and extremely easy to fail. It seems a silly decision, right? However, we admire this kind of silly and naive entrepreneurial motivation.
Secondly, I am willing to invest in those who really have vision for the future, and can turn this vision into a faith of a company and a person. I think Xiaopeng is such an entrepreneur. Thirdly, I think he has the charm of a leader, who can inspire others and organize a group of talented people to embark on a course together.
Finally, he is full of awe of the risk of starting a business, and is brave enough to face the reality and anxieties, and to solve the problem. In fact, it takes great courage to face the reality and these considerable difficulties. We see in Xiaopeng these four traits of the spirit of an excellent entrepreneur.
Three years has passed. He Xiaopeng, who once challenged Elon Musk, now seems more pragmatic and simpler. Xiaopeng Motors has been publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange, but what lingers in He Xiaopeng’s mind is always the product.
Gloria Ai Cheng: Do you think the US listing is the best way to facilitate Xpeng to achieve a better vision?
He Xiaopeng: I think it’s a choice. If we don't make a good layout today, it will be difficult for us to offer more new products in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Today we are in an industry of rapid changes and innovation, and we can’t use the old logic for products. Instead, we need to step forward to pave the road for the better performance in the next track.

Mitsubishi Pajero 2020 Review
There are no assurances the  Mitsubishi Pajero 2020 is the very last one we’ll see, but further updates for Mitsubishi’s long-runner are off the cards.
With a lineage that stretches back to the first-generation Pajero, revealed at the 1981 Tokyo motor show and sold in Aus’ from 1983, and four generations over the years that followed, the Pajero has earned icon status.
In fact, the current generation alone is something of an icon in itself, arriving in 2006 and given its current styling revisions in 2014. It’s no spring chicken, then, but the best off-road legends tend to have long unbroken runs – think first-gen Mercedes Benz G-Class (40 years and counting) and Land Rover Defender (at 33 years).
For the 2020 model year, Mitsubishi has made a few changes. Most significantly, the previous range-topping Exceed variant has been dropped, leaving a two-model range that starts with the Pajero GLX from $49,990 drive-away, and tops out with the GLS The powertrain is unchanged, meaning the long-running 3.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine continues with 141kW at 3800rpm and 441Nm at 2000rpm. Only one transmission is available, a five-speed automatic, sending power to Mitsubishi’s Super Select II four-wheel-drive system.
Official figures suggest mixed-cycle fuel consumption of 9.1 litres per 100km. 
Underpinning the Pajero is an ‘integral frame’ monocoque chassis – not typical of most hardcore 4x4s that use a separate ladder frame, but able to blur the lines somewhat between passenger car comfort and off-road ruggedness. The result is a sizeable four-wheel-drive that, even given its age, is thoroughly pleasant to drive.
Acceleration is leisurely, but for a car with the Pajero’s capabilities that’s fine. There are also hints of diesel soundtrack depending on engine load and conditions, but overall the 3.2-litre engine is muted and smooth for its age.
The IVECS II (Innovative Vehicle Electronic Control System) transmission smarts aren’t at the cutting edge of control technology compared to the era in which the system debuted. Adaptive logic and the ability to ‘learn’ driver patterns mean Mitsubishi’s five-speed auto responds favourably to driver inputs without hunting for the right gear or swapping cogs unnecessarily.
For drivers who would rather mete gear changes themselves, a floor-mounted manual mode allows gears to be held as required, which is handy in some off-road situations or when towing.
On the subject of towing, which is a primary purchaser consideration, the Pajero claims a maximum 3000kg tow rating. It pays to keep in mind, however, that up to 2500kg the Pajero carries a 250kg ball limit, at 3000kg the ball limit drops to 180kg – limiting flexibility somewhat.
Unlike most recreational 4x4s such as the Toyota Prado, Isuzu MU-X and even the slightly smaller Pajero Sport, the Pajero runs on fully independent suspension. That helps give it a more settled and stable feel over smaller blemishes in the road surface, more in line with 4x4s like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Land Rover Discovery.
While the Pajero legacy (in more recent times, at least) is forged on its simplicity and dependability, those same provisions cost it points on presentation.
On the inside, the fourth-gen Pajero looks every bit its age. The dash design – one massive tombstone of black plastic – makes no attempts to position itself as a premium product. It’ll survive spills, scuffs, moisture, dust and dirt no worries, but won’t be mistaken for a luxury product.
The newest part of the Pajero’s interior is its 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system loaded with features like DAB+ radio and smartphone mirroring for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but lacking in-built sat-nav or a CD player, which seem like oversights given its propensity for remote getaways.
The driver faces analogue instruments with no digital displays. The darkly shrouded two-dial gauge cluster can be hard to clock at a glance.
Ahead of the driver, there’s no trip computer info or digital speedo readout; however, an LCD display in the centre stack offers some additional info, like barometric pressure, fuel monitoring, time and temp.
Ergonomics aren’t always on point, like the (admittedly minor control) switches hidden from view on the lower dash to the left of the steering column, plus limited seat adjustment (powered upfront) and lack of steering wheel reach adjustment mean the Pajero may not be an ideal fit for all drivers.
Despite generous external proportions, the interior may be less spacious than expected. There are no issues upfront, but adult passengers in the second row will find the seat base undersized with a lack of under-thigh support, though there is an adjustable backrest.
Getting into the third row is relatively simple, but once there, the tiny dimensions rule the rearmost seats out for all but the most compact passengers. A small, low seat, lack of toe and knee room, and no ability to slide the middle row forward force an awkward side-skewed seating position.
Comfort and convenience are covered by features like single-zone climate control, rear booster controls and overhead ventilation to all three rows, power windows with auto up and down for the driver, cloth and ‘synthetic leather’ seating surfaces, Bluetooth connectivity, heated front seats, auto lights and wipers, self-dimming interior mirror, HID headlights, and remote central locking with key start.
Items that have gone missing with the removal of the higher-spec Exceed model include a sunroof, leather trim, and sports pedals – but the GLS also gains Rockford 12-speaker audio, an alarm and auto high beam, while also coming in at more than R160K under the old range-topper, which seems an agreeable compromise.
With all three rows of seats in use, there’s barely enough space left to handle a couple of grocery bags. The final row of seats can be stowed flat in the boot floor, which is a fiddly multi-stage process.
Behind the second row, Mitsubishi claims a whopping 1069L to the top of the seats, meaning plenty of useful acreages to pack your luggage into, along with plenty of bag hooks and an included cargo blind. Drop the second row and there’s 1789L, with a load length of just over 1.4m.
On the safety front, Mitsubishi provides six airbags, ABS brakes, traction and stability control, plus three top tether and two ISOFIX child seat mounts for the middle row (positioned inboard and ruling out the use of the centre seat).
Against more modern competitors, the Pajero misses out on technologies that are fast becoming commonplace on much cheaper vehicles. Features like adaptive cruise control, attention monitoring, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring and the autonomous emergency braking are nowhere to be found.
Mitsubishi touts a five-star ANCAP rating, but the assessment is dated from 2011, meaning the data is now considered out of date with the lack of crash-avoidance technology making the Pajero ineligible for a five-star finish under current criteria.
For buyers seeking simplicity, the Pajero’s more basic range of features appeals to staunch traditionalists, but as a flagship vehicle, it leaves much to be desired. Particularly amongst peers like the Ford Everest and Toyota Prado, which carry more safety and luxury tech, but also wear more expensive price tags.
Similarly, the way the Pajero GLS comports itself on the road feels much more like past generations of 4x4s and not the newest or most advanced. The engine can’t be rushed, and would rather dig into its torque reserves than fly through its rev range.
There’s around 2300kg of kerb weight to shift, so the Pajero is no traffic light Grand Prix racer. It needs a moment to really get rolling, but between 1500 and 2500rpm it feels almost unstoppable.
Steering is on the heavy side at low speeds, with an 11.4m turning circle making for a somewhat cumbersome feel in tight quarters, but head onto the open road and it is much more stable and secure as a result.
Ride quality also favours the open road. It’s absorbent enough to soak up jagged rural road surfaces and doesn’t jar or shock occupants.
You can also point it away from made surfaces, with the Super Select II 4x4 system accommodating on- and off-road use with shift-on-the-go ease. To keep fuel use trim in town there's two-wheel drive, and should conditions turn damp there's on-road four-wheel drive for added traction. Head into the rough stuff and 4HLC mode locks the centre diff, while 4LLC adds low-range gearing into the mix for heavy-duty work.
In factory form, there’s 225mm of ground clearance and up to 700mm wading depth should things start to get hairy. While the lack of rigid axles won’t work for rock-hopping traditionalists, the four-wheel independent set-up holds its own on moderate off-road terrain, as does the standard rear diff lock.
As a touring vehicle, travelling noise is low, engine and road intrusion are well managed, though wind noise can factor in depending on the conditions. The block-shaped Pajero isn’t necessarily the most aerodynamically efficient.
Now that the newer Pajero Sport has established itself, it's clear that buyers after a better-equipped, plusher, or more high-tech four-wheel-drive have an option. Be that as it may, there’s still a clear audience for, and plenty to like about, the Pajero.
Its amount of time on the ground imparts the perception of having proven itself (recent recall notwithstanding), and certainly, on the used market, there’s no shortage of examples of the current fourth-gen model with well beyond 300,000km on the clock.
Owners are covered by a five-year/100,000km warranty and capped-price servicing for the first three years or 45,000km set at $479 per visit, occurring at 12-month or 15,000km intervals (whichever comes first) inclusive of all fluids and filters described in the regular service schedule.
Because of their dedicated ‘heavy-duty’ focus, cars like the LandCruiser, Patrol, Prado and Pajero are unlikely to ever be part driving, easy to park, economy champions. For their target market that’s absolutely ideal, too.
While the sophistication and complexity of rivals continue to expand, the Pajero sticks to the ‘keep it simple’ mantra favoured by regional and remote buyers and carving out its own niche in the process.
No model can run forever, though, and with production scaling down for overseas markets. Mitsubishi tells us Pajero production will soldier on for a few more years but won't yet commit to an end date.
The Pajero’s future gets even murkier now that Mitsubishi operates under the control of Nissan. While past concepts have pointed to a next-generation Pajero, the need to scale down development costs has put plans on hold while Nissan and Mitsubishi clarify the direction for Pajero and Patrol replacements.
With sharpened pricing over the years (including the ongoing current offer) and a hard-won reputation, the Pajero makes sense as a sturdy rig for touring South Africa from corner to corner reliably and comfortably.
If you’re not swayed by bells and whistles, the Pajero could be just the thing. It won’t stick around forever, though, nor will it have you bristling with joy every time you get behind the wheel, but it will handle anything you can throw at it and come back for more.

2021 Ram 1500 TRX vs. Ford F-150 Raptor: Jurassic (Off-Road) Park
Ram has just pulled a (massive) sheet off the burly 2021 1500 TRX pickup. We’re absolutely salivating to put it through its paces, but that’ll come later—and you’ll want to read about it. But we can draw some serious conclusions about how the new Ram might fare against its only real rival—the Ford F-150 Raptor—out in the desert and on a muddy trail just by looking at the two trucks’ specifications. And we’re not just talking about what’s under the hood, or in between the wheels, either. Let’s take a deep look at how these off-road trucks fare in a number of categories.
Which Is Bigger—Ram 1500 TRX or Ford F-150 Raptor?
We’re going to compare apples to apples when considering external dimensions. The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is only available in the four-door Crew Cab bodystyle, which is comparable to the 2020 Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew. Both have two sets of normal-sized, conventional-opening doors. The Raptor also offers a shorter-wheelbase SuperCab, which is also nearly a foot shorter overall than the SuperCrew and has stubby, rear-hinged aft doors.
In terms of overall length and wheelbase, the TRX and Raptor are very close—the TRX is an inch longer (232.9 inches) on less than an inch shorter wheelbase (145.1 inches). Call it a draw. Both are wide enough to require clearance lights (the Raptor is 86.0 inches wide and the TRX 88.0), thanks to swollen fenders accommodating increased track widths that are within an inch of each other. Expect both to collect their fair share of pinstripes bashing through narrow trails or desert scrub.
These are trucks, so let’s quickly touch on cargo capacity, towing, and payload. The TRX has a 67-inch box with 53.9 cu. ft. of room, compared to the Raptor’s 65-inch box with 52.8 cu. ft. inside. Despite its additional heft, the TRX has a slight edge in towing and payload, too, at 8,100 and 1,310 lbs respectively.
Which Is Bigger Inside—Ram 1500 TRX or Ford F-150 Raptor?
Again, we’re only comparing crew cab models here. And as with external dimensions, the picture inside is mostly the same. Neither truck has a clear edge, although the TRX offers a smidge more rear leg room (45.2 inches) and the Raptor has a considerable 3.0 inches more front leg room (43.9 inches). Both offer nearly 41 inches of headroom (or hat room) up front and a generous amount of shoulder room. Of course, the Ram 1500 in general has earned our admiration for its interior beyond the specs, setting the bar for everyone else to aspire to.  The TRX adopts the 1500 Rebel’s interior, sprinkled with Limited trim upgrades.

How are these trucks going to handle the rough stuff? The numbers tell a tale, which may be that the Raptor was the benchmark rather for the TRX. Their off-road stats are, by the numbers, a wash. Overall ground clearance is more than 11 inches, with only a few tenths of an inch separating the two. Nearly identical approach, breakover, and departure angles also indicate that most obstacles that a Raptor can climb over won’t faze a 1500 TRX.
One thing we can’t quantify here is how much of a difference the 1500 TRX’s five-link rear suspension and coil springs will affect off-road performance compared to the (current) Raptor’s more conventional solid axle and leaf spring arrangement. It certainly hasn’t held the Raptor back in its class of one, but the TRX’s arrangement will draw serious scrutiny.
There are less drastic differences in the running gear. The TRX is offered with a 3.55 axle ratio compared to the Raptor’s shorter 4.10 rear end. And the Raptor has 10 gears to row through, compared to the TRX’s eight, although the ratio spread is otherwise similar. More pertinent to off-roaders is the crawl ratio (determined by multiplying the ratios of first, low range, and axle). Both offer 2.64:1 low-range ratios. Doing the math, the TRX’s crawl ratio is 44:1, and the Raptor’s is 50.7:1. Slight edge to the Raptor, but note that these are well shy of the crawl ratios offered by more dedicated off-road vehicles like the upcoming Ford Bronco (up to 95:1 thanks to its ultra-low first gear) and the Jeep Wrangler (84:1).
Ram 1500 TRX vs. Ford F-150 Raptor: Power and Weight
Other than at the rear axle, where the TRX and Raptor diverge the most significantly is under the hood. While the first-generation F-150 Raptor featured a V-8 (a smaller 5.4-liter originally, and a 6.2 that quickly became standard), the second-generation models adopted a smaller twin-turbo V-6. For 2020, that EcoBoost engine makes 450 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 510 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm.
But the TRX, as far as specs go, blows that V-6 out of the water. The V-8 underhood displaces 6.2 liters, and on top of that it’s supercharged—just like all of the Hellcat and Trackhawk versions of this same basic engine. The TRX has 702 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 650 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm—both offered at higher revs than the Raptor’s power peaks, but much more overall.
We expect the TRX to be a monster in a straight line—think 4.5 seconds to 60 mph and a 12.9 second quarter mile time—despite its likely heavy curb weight. The Raptor, not a slow truck by any stretch, does those deeds in 6.0 and 14.7 seconds, respectively—way, way off the TRX’s mark. There’s no replacement for displacement, it seems. That’s despite the Raptor’s torque-happy power delivery, with little turbo lag and lots of thrust—helped along by the Ford’s two extra cogs to help ensure the truck is in the right gear for maximum go.
