I am recently going through all your Ficino posts with great joy (I need a new historical rabbit hole!). Do you have any preferred sources to recommend if I want to start reding or listening in for more grounding on his life, weirdness, philosophy, and all the other funky queer Florentine folk surrounding him?

yessss come down the rabbit hole with me! He is such a delightful weirdo <3 Get ready to learn so much about Saturn and Saturn's Malice (which is not in the room with us, calm down Ficino).

He's a hard one because, in English, there aren't really any biographies on him. (Italian, obviously, is a different story.)

A lot of the grounding works - good essay collections, academic texts etc. - are prohibitively expensive. They can range from $100cad to over $400cad, depending on the work. This is because most are purely that: academic texts. Meaning the print run was like 100 copies and all were bought by university libraries lol

He is also not a well known figure outside of those who study quattrocento Italy or those who study Platonism and other philosophical movements. Some of those who operate in the occult world are familiar with him due to his writings on astrology and natural magic.

Florence also had a huge flood that tragically decked a lot of their older archives and that has also sadly impacted many historians' work in the early modern field.

Now, all this said, I'm going to give you my current piecemeal recommendations:

Eight Philosophers of the Italian Renaissance - Paul Kristeller - a classic survey work based on a lecture series he gave in like the 60s, I want to say. It's very much "what it says on the tin" and provides a healthy overview of eight philosophers of the Renaissance. Ficino is one of them and it's a good place to start on who/what/where/when/why.

Others are those like Bruno, Pico Della Mirandola, Valla, Petrarch etc. All worth knowing something about because they either knew Ficino or influenced him or were influenced by him.

Kristeller wrote a lot on Ficino and is one of the "founders" I would say of the 20th century revival in the interest in Ficino. So, noodle around his works as there is always something interesting in them. They are dated, he was writing in the 60s - 90s, but it's broadly good stuff.

Volume 1 of Ficino's Letters, 2nd edition (make sure it's the second edition). This has great front material that goes into him and his life, positions him in the period and those who he knew and was corresponding with.

I will say, they do write in the introduction: "He [Ficino] was apparently the least active of men. It is probable that in his sixty-six years he never set foot outside the territory of Florence and the record of his life is little more than a chronicle of his books."

Which I take umbridge over as his life was very interesting, people just haven't dug into it to the degree they should.** Like, what was going on in the 1480s with all those land disputes over his father's will between him and his brothers? We need details! We need the family gossip! Alas, we don't have it as it may not exist, anymore, or the related legal papers are in an archive and it's not been made available to the public.

**Note: Paul Kristeller, and others, make occasional references to someone who was working on an English biography of Ficino. But this would have been in the 80s and 90s and nothing appears to have come of it. So I presume that project is languishing in someone's desk drawer.

There was talk of Arthur Farndell publishing a biography but I haven't seen any signs of it - last I heard mention would have been in the early 00s. Farndell's done most of the modern translations of Ficino's works, so he's quite prolific and you'll see his name a lot.

Ficino's Letter Collection (the remaining volumes) - there are 12 volumes of letters that Ficino began pulling together in the 1470s, but he regularly added to, edited, and tweaked the collection over the course of his life.

Letter collections of this sort were a genre of writing at this time and would have been understood to be a vehicle for expounding on philosophical or political issues rather than literal transcriptions of letters written to people.

Which is to say, Ficino did write some iteration of the letters included to the recipients identified. But what was printed, the manuscript editions we have, are highly edited for the purpose of public edification. This does make it super interesting to see what personal details he chooses to leave in.

For example, November 10, 1476 Ficino writes to Cavalcanti about some theological works he was putting together. Ficino also notes that he is returning to Florence soon, he had been at his father's country farm/house/thing, and he intreats Cavalcanti to also return to Florence so "we may at least be close companions in the city, even if we have not been close companions in the country this summer."

Now, as an addendum after the farewell Ficino includes this gem:

"But why do I write nothing about the recent birth of your third daughter? Because you did not write a word to me. Do you wish me to tell the truth? I will not write a word about this before I hear whether I am to congratulate or to console you. But rejoice in the gifts of the Great King, whatever they may be, for nothing from the great is mean or worthy of scorn."

What an interesting bit of personal correspondence to keep in a letter set meant to bring people closer to Platonic ideals of love, civic duty, and their relationship with the divine.

But all of Ficino's letters to Cavalcanti are odd like that. They're half personal correspondence ("I'm sad and bored, please write me!!!" or "I have Luigi Pulci. So much. Have I told you that recently? Hate him. I love everyone in the entire world with every fibre of my soul except Gigi. Fuck Gigi." etc.) and half actual philosophical musings.

Anyway, the letter collections are worth reading. Each volume also includes relevant historical details on what was happening in his life or the broader world at that time. So, for example, the back matter for Vol 4 dives into the Pazzi conspiracy since that is relevant to the letters of that volume (and Vol. 5 to be fair).

De Vita (Three Books of Life) - Carol Kaske and John Clark - This is Ficino's "medical" text plus the third book which is where Ficino is like "and this is how you use magical properties of certain stones, sigils, planets, and daemons to heal yourself" and other normal things like that. (He broadly fits into the mode of natural healing magic that was very common for the time - magic/medicine/science all being tangled together in the medieval and early modern period - however he does go a bit further than some. This is the book that got him into hot water with the Church.) Ficino was the son of a doctor and studied and practiced medicine so it makes sense he added medical texts to his repertoire.

I have version put out by The Renaissance Society of America: Renaissance Text Series with critical notes and introduction by Carol Kaske and John Clark.

High recommend, if only for the front notes and introduction. They do a great job positioning Ficino in the broader intellectual landscape of the time. They do a bit of attempting to track his education which wasn't as formal as one might think (he attended the University of Florence but I don't think he ever graduated. He was self-taught in many respects). They also get into what his thoughts on magic were and how they fit, or didn't fit, with the broader framework of faith and magical practices of Ficino's contemporaries.

In addition, they get into how his medical and magical thinking differs from others, where he was innovative, where he leaned on existing traditions, and the repercussions of having published this text.

The Bookseller of Florence - Ross King - this is a great, vey accessible book. It uses Vespasiano's life, a contemporary of Ficino, as a lens through which to explore the manifold changes in manuscript/book creation and distribution that were happening over the course of the fifteenth century.

The book also weaves in the shifting intellectual, religious, and political movements and the big, and small, players that participated and influenced these changes. Naturally, Ficino makes appearances throughout and he is described delightfully.

But I highly recommend it as a means to get a backdrop of the intellectual and political world Ficino was born into and operated within. Also, there's fun gossip about people in it and that's always a plus.

An example of some humourous bits:

"Ficino was scholarly and pious, [Luigi] Pulci (known as Gigi) boisterously scandalous, famous for his insults, invective, and sarcastic humour; he also had an unblushing fondness for taverns, brothels, and black magic. He lived up to his surname (Pulci means "fleas")--a maddenly irritating parasite. As one Florentine frantically complained in a letter to Lorenzo [de' Medici], "Gigi is annoying, Gigi has a bad tongue, Gigi is crazy, Gigi is arrogant, Gigi spreads scandal, Gigi has a thousand faults." Ficino triumphed when Gigi wrote a series of sonnets scorning pilgrims, miracles, preachers, and the doctrine of the immortal soul--and, in doing so, Ficino declared, made himself "odious to God" [...]"

Phenomenal. None of them should ever change. Also just the mental image of this pissed off Florentine frantically writing to Lorenzo "Get this man OUT of our City or so help me God!!"

Friend to Mankind: Marsilio Ficino - editor Michael Shepherd - ok so this is an essay collection that is really hit and miss. More misses than hits, now that I'm looking at it. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way for it, but if you see it in like a bargain bin or something it's worth picking up.

That said, there are a few essays in it that are worth finding, if you can:

"Fellow Philosophers," Linda Proud (this one is Great if you want the hilarious hot gossip of Pico Della Mirandola, Poliziano, and Ficino squabbling over Plato's concepts of Love. Well, Pico and Ficino cat-fight over it, if in a loving fashion. Poliziano eats popcorn and laughs.)

"In Praise of the One - Marsilio Ficino and Advaita," Arthur Farndell

"Ficino and Astrology," Geoffrey Pearce

"Ficino on the Nature of Love and the Beautiful," Joseph Milne

On the Nature of Love: Ficino on Plato's Symposium - translation by Arthur Farndell

It is 100% worth reading Ficino's commentaries on Plato's Symposium if only because I am convinced he wrote the entire thing as a love letter to Giovanni Cavalcanti.

Marsilio Ficino and His World - Sophia Howlett - if you can find this at the local library or used somewhere and it's not $150 I recommend it. This is the overview book that I think you're after that doesn't really exist in English, aside from here.

Marsilio Ficino: His Theology, His Philosophy, His Legacy - editors Michael Allen and Valery Rees - This is another expensive one, sitting around $250/$300 - but I've read excerpts from it and all that I have read is amazing.

It's an essay collection covering his thoughts on Hermeticism, Plotinus, the soul and primacy of will, musical therapy (Ficino was very keen on musical therapy), Jewish concepts of the prisca theologia, the 15th c. Plato-Aristotle controversy among other philosophical items. There are also essays exploring his influence on art, thinkers, and writers both in his own lifetime as well as throughout history.

Plato's Persona: Marsilio Ficino, Renaissance Humanism, and Platonic Traditions - Denis Robichaud - I just spent too much money and bought this book. Will report back as I read it - however, based on the excerpts I read online, I'm super stoked.

Robichoud seems to be exploring how Ficino wrote and created his sense of self through interpretation of Platonic writings and thought. There's lots of stuff about how Ficino interacts with Plato and interprets and understands himself as, like, Plato's "spokesperson" if not a full extension of Plato himself.

New Year's Resolutions

Hey everybody. It's a new year. Happy New Year!

Gamedev Blogging

Last year I have fallen behind on posting gamedev stuff. It's mostly because there is no good way to format code listings in the new editor. So this year, I am not even going to try eith gamedev tutorials on tumblr. I might post them elsewhere and just link them. I have already taken a look at Cohost, but It doesn't have the features I need. Wouldn't it be cook if you could post pico-8 carts on cohost? Or source code listings? Or LaTeX? I might as well write the HTML by hand and host it somewhere. But that won't be the focus of this blog in 2024.

Instead I'm going to do more tumblr posting about game design, just less on the code side. It will be more on the screenshot side. First thing will be about my 2023 Game Of The Year. It will probably surprise you. I did not expect it to be this good. You can also expect something about some of my old prototypes. Over the years I have started and abandoned game prototypes after either concluding that the idea won't work and can't be made to work, or after learning what I needed to learn. What did I learn? Wait and find out!

Computer Litaracy

I'll also attempt to write more about general computing and "computer literacy" topics. I have two particular "series" or "categories" in mind already. Almost Good: Technologies that sound great when you hear abut them, but that don't work as well as you might think when you try them out. Harmful Assumptions About Computing: Non-technical people often have surprising ideas about how computers work. As a technically inclined person, you don't even realise how far these unspoken assumptions about computers can reach.

Usability of computers and software seems to have gotten worse rather than better in many aspects, while computers have become entrenched in every workplace, our private lives, and in our interactions with corporations and government services. Computer literacy has also become worse in certain ways, and I think I know some reasons why.

There will also be some posts about forum moderation and community management. It's rather basic and common-sense stuff, but I want to spell it out.

Actual Game Development

I am going to release a puzzle game in 2024. You will be able to buy it for money. You can hold me to it. This is my biggest New Year's Resolution.

I will continue to work on two games of mine. One will be the game I just mentioned. The other is Wyst. I put the project on ice because I was running out of inspiration for a while, but I think I am sufficiently inspired now. I will pick it up again and add two more worlds to the game, and get it into a "complete" state. I'll also have to do a whole lot of playtesting. This may be the last time I touch Unity3d.

I will try out two new engines and write one or two proof-of-concept games in each of them, maybe something really simple like "Flappy Bird", and one game jam "warm-up" thing, with the scope of a Ludum Dare compo game. Maybe that means I'll write Tetris or Pong multiple times. I probably won't put the "Pong in Godot" on itch.io page next to a "Pong in Raylib" and "Pong in Bevy", but I'll just put the code on my GitHub. The goal is to have more options for a game jam, so I can decide to use Godot if it is a better fit for the jam topic.

In the past, I have always reached for PyGame by default, because Python is the language that has flask and Django and sqlalchemy and numpy and pyTorch, and because I mostly want to make games in 2D. I want to get out of my comfort zone. In addition to the general-purpose game engines, I will try to develop something in bitsy, AGS, twine, pico-8 or Ren'Py. I want to force myself to try a different genre this way. Maybe I'll make an archaeologist dating simulator.

All in all, this means I will so significant work on two existing projects, revisit some old failed prototypes to do a postmortem, I'll write at least six new prototypes, and two new jam games, plus some genre/narrative experiments. That's a lot already. So here's an anti-resolution: I won't even try to develop any of my new prototypes into full releases. I will only work on existing projects from 2023 or before if I develop anything into playable demo versions or full games. I won't get sidetracked by the next Ludum Dare game, I promise. After the jam is over, I'll put down the project, at least until 2025.

Apparently I NEVER made a "Clockboy in Video Games" post, but I do, in fact, have some screenshots from some games saved on my computer... so I did some more digging and I have a pretty decent list of games he has appeared in!

"Clockboy" is the nickname I've given to the clockface on the "it's a small world" ride facade in the Disney theme parks. All of these are based primarily around the versions seen in the non-Paris version of the ride, so I unfortunately do not have any appearances listed of the sun/moon face.

If there are any I'm missing, feel free to tell me! These are important to my big Clockboy archive that I've been working on! :-)

For clarification, the qualifications for something to appear here are...

it must be include the clock face from the "it's a small world" facade -- this is my main interest regarding the history of the facade, so some games that feature it without the clockface are not included

this goes the same for if a game includes the song, but not the clockface, as well

(Note: a lot of this is based on research rather than first-hand experience playing most of these games, so apologies if I am missing things or incorrect about some info!)

Mickey no Tokyo Disneyland Stamp Rally (1996)

This is, as far as I can tell, his first appearance in a video game. This game is a Japan-exclusive on the Sega Pico. Essentially, you go around Tokyo Disneyland and complete mini-games to earn stamps. In the background of Fantasyland, you see a very silly looking Clockboy.

Ultimate Ride (2001)

The next known appearance is in the game "Ultimate Ride", which had additional versions named "Ultimate Ride Coaster Deluxe" and "Disney Coaster" that were published in 2002. All three games were Disney's answer to the Roller Coaster Tycoon and Theme Park/Sims Theme Park series. I can't find a lot of specifics on small world's role in the game, as I have not played the games yet, but the version of the facade used is the one from Disneyland in the late 80's to early 2000's.

Virtual Magic Kingdom (2005)

I think I played VMK for like... a week in the mid-late 2000's. My cousins were really into it, which is the only reason I loosely remembered this game's existence enough to check for some small world presence, and sure enough, there is... but in the form of a store.

Also, in the same vein as Toontown Rewritten, it does look like there is a fan-made VMK project trying to recreate the game in the works, which seemingly is still updated... I might check it out at some point just for higher resolution screenshots of the in-game store.

Epic Mickey (2010)

I am 90% sure this is the most well-known video game appearance of Clockboy, where he appears as the first main boss of the game. He actually has two designs in this game, depending on whether or not the player chooses to defeat him (thinner route) or save him (paint route).

Kinect: Disneyland Adventures (2011)

Unsurprisingly, the whole facade makes in appearance in this game, since it's pretty much just a walking sim to enjoy the park (with some mini games thrown in for good measure). I haven't played this so I don't know much about it other than it looks a little uncanny, and Clockboy is extremely reflective, for some reason.

Researching this game a bit more, I learned an artist I really like and have been following for a while on Twitter (@/shoomlah) posted a thread of some really nice concept art they did for the game, which you can view here!

Disneyland Explorer (2012)

Was unsure whether or not to count this one but it is technically a game, but in this iOS app, he's essentially just a picture. When you click on him, you get some trivia and it lets you play a mini-game.

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two (2012)

He makes an appearance in the "dioramas" section of the game -- I have not played Epic Mickey 2 so I am not 100% familiar with the context of these (aside from them being dioramas based on boss fights from the first game)

There is also some visdev work for this portion of the game where you can get a better view of his face minus the blooming lighting:

Also, in this section, the little loading symbol has the most normal looking version of his face out of all of these

The Epic Mickey Wiki is a good source for some more artwork and models, for those who are interested -- I won't put all of the files here, but it's really cool to see!

(Also, as far as I can tell, the clocktower did not return in Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion, but I could be wrong)

Disney Infinity 2.0 and 3.0 (2014 and 2015)

After doing some digging, I found out that he has two different appearances in the Disney Infinity series: one as the whole facade (as an outdoor set piece)...

...and one as just his face (as an interior item)...

It appears the method of obtaining them was by tapping a Magicband to the scanner, which is pretty cute :'-)

Disney Emoji-Blitz (2016)

There appear to be two versions of him that appeared in Emoji Blitz... I cannot for the life of me find more detailed information about them

I'm not even 100% sure the one of just the clockface is in the game, but it comes up if you search the right phrase on google so *shrugs*

Disney Magic Kingdoms (2016)

this is a mobile game with the typical mobile game issues but the facade design they use for small world is SOOOO cute... very reminiscent of Hong Kong Disneyland's version of the ride:

Disney Wonderful Worlds (2021)

This is another mobile game appearance... This one is a little tricky to find as the game is already defunct as of mid-2022, so the only images I can find are through YouTube videos. Disney Wonderful Worlds is a match-3 and park builder game, and you eventually unlock the ability to place the attraction down and a VERY spinny Clockboy is on the facade.

Since I cannot reblog the original post (because OP has blocked me), I have no other choice but to make my own post with my reply:

I am NOT a "full-tilt hate blog". To be honest, I have never ever hated anything, as "hate" is a strong word; my beef with those Madoka-likes is that they crank up on the nastiness, making its original source of inspiration look tame in comparison. It's as if they were written by redditors from the r/Im14AndThisIsDeep page!

And speaking of Madoka, I was finally learning to appreciate it thanks to its spinoff, Magia Record, but that doesn't mean it's free from being criticized, no. Hell, I've talked about how the animated adaptation was a full-blown disaster because Gekidan Inu Curry, the directors, didn't knew how the Magical Girl genre functioned despite working on a Magical Girl anime for 10 years, not to mention that they had the writer of BOKU NO MOTHERFUCKING PICO on the staff.

Thanks to that shitshow, I had no other choice but to DEFEND the original anime's ending; that how low my bar is, fam. At least, in the OG series, each of the Holy Quintet girls had impactful send-offs; they were just used as Nostalgia Bait in the MagiReco anime!

Sure, my past critics towards Madoka Magica have been quite harsh (also, I was still rather fresh to Tumblr at the time, so I was clumsily trying to navigate through it), but let it be known that I am not against heavier themes in media; I just want them to be treated with the seriousness that they deserve.

When it comes to media and narratives in general, I have this personal philosophy: There are no bad ideas, only bad executions. Ergo, these Madoka-likes were brimming with lots of potential for new and fresh stories. But how these stories were handled... UGH...

I could've loved the idea of a magical girl battle royale. I could've loved the idea of magical girls using their powers for revenge and/or punish those who have abused and bullied them. I could've loved the idea of magical girls navigating in a post-apocalyptic world...

...but how much of a monster do you have to be to have a trans child, a lesbian couple, and a pregnant woman on your body count list? How twisted do you have to be to shamelessly use magical girls as child soldiers and treat disabilities like a punishment and a fate worse than death? How much of a disgusting sadist do you have to be to torture a magical girl SO much to the point that she starts contemplating suicide?!

These executions aren't just bad; they are absolutely ATROCIOUS! I think I am justified to be pissed off at these types of series!

And also, before anyone says that I am biased on my critics, think again. Do you know which non-grimdark MG series that I have criticized about at some point on this here blog? Steven Universe, Star vs. The Forces of Evil, Miraculous Ladybug, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Hugtto PreCure, Wedding Peach, just to name a few.

I repeat: @magicalgirlagency is NOT a "full-tilt hate blog"; it is a criticism blog. I was never against darker narratives; I just hate how they're always so poorly handled.

You're 100% free to enjoy those "crawling-in-my-skin" types of series. You can enjoy series like Berserk, Evangelion, Attack On Titan, Tokyo Ghoul, and whatever's on the market right now!

Just don't put these series on a high pedestal and worship them to an unhealthily religious degree, and absolutely do not trample on regular Magical Girl series with brighter narratives to make them look superior. If you do that, then there's CLEARLY a bias.

You can enjoy grimdark, just don't let it take over your life.

Pronto mejorará el tiempo y será el momento de pensar en viajes por la República Checa, o en dónde pasar unas vacaciones en la República Checa para redescubrir su belleza. Como conocer las montañas de Krkonoše en Chequia. Con el artículo de hoy empiezo una serie de consejos sobre dónde ir en la República Checa. Tanto a lugares a los que no va mucha gente como a lugares muy conocidos. Personalmente, me encantan las montañas. Solía ir allí con mis padres tanto en verano como en invierno. Afortunadamente, las montañas no están nunca demasiado lejos en la República Checa, pero es cierto que algunas de ellas están un poco llenas de gente. La ventaja de los más visitadas es que hay una infraestructura totalmente desarrollada y, por lo tanto, normalmente nunca tendrás hambre ni sed y siempre podrás dormir. Y el primer lugar de este tipo serán las montañas más altas de la República Checa, las Krkonoše. Picos entre dos regiones y dos países Krkonoše son unas montañas situadas en el extremo norte del país, que abarcan dos regiones y se extienden hasta Polonia. También se encuentra la montaña más alta de la República Checa, Sněžka (1603 m), y la cascada más alta de la República Checa, Pančavský vodopád (148 m).
