MUSE AESTHETICS: TYRANDE WHISPERWIND, HIGH PRIESTESS OF ELUNE
Why have you chosen this path, Tyrande Whisperwind? Because, she had said, I want to protect others. Especially the ones I love.

An Ancient War
Year -10,000
Between the bushes, the young huntress remained silent. Melded into the foliage, she spied the demon party trudging through the depths of the forest. Tiny devilish imps hopped at the forefront, followed by hulking doomguards and crimson horned beasts with cloven hooves. She gave a nasty glare as they passed. First sightings of this dark plague of demonic beings had been reported just days ago while she had taken leave on the hunt and she had braced herself for the shock for what she was able to witness. She could never have had the time to prepare herself for the horror of the depraved parade their armies were made of. All of her fellow hunters had been slain on their journey back to Suramar and only her swift agility had kept her from becoming the next victim. Her saber companion Rigel quietly stood beside his mistress, eyeing up the invaders with as much disgust as she did. He too had the speed to outrun the onslaught, alas her owl Nevaeh did not escape her own unfortunate fate. A bat-like creature had swooped in on her exit path and sunk it’s terrible fangs into the poor bird’s body, smashing her fragile frame and ending her life.
There was no time to mourn. She had to reach Suramar, and quickly. As she tried to gauge her distance from them to calculate the exact moment she could stealth past undetected, she noticed a hovering elf to the very right. She too was Shadowmelded but the huntress was able to see her. A priestess just a few years her senior hung behind the corner of the building also waiting for her chance to scurry to safety. Snowy white braids from her hair had become loose in some sort of struggle and a large slash cut through the front of her ivory robes, the silk smeared with a bloody stain. She hesitated on one foot, the other obviously too injured to carry her weight. As she waited, she shifted her body ever so slightly and crack. A branch snapped under her and her face winced as she knew now her position had been given away.
The imps at the front went into a frenzy: bouncing forward and shrieking to alert their masters. Without a second thought, the huntress leapt out of the shadows towards the priestess. The priestess let out a gasp of surprise at the sudden aid, but quickly realised that it was just a single elf and her mount. No others. The huntress loaded her bow, swiftly launching arrow after arrow into the advancing imps, each one crumbling to the ground after a single hit. But that was only the beginning of the attack. Two gigantic doomguards and four goat-like demons were coming to them fast. The priestess rested a hand on the huntress’ shoulder.
“It is up to Elune now,” she whispered, “your bravery will ensure that you will remain by her side for all eternity. She will recognise your sacrifice.” The huntress paused. ‘It is up to Elune’...
She fell to her knees in another moment of impulse, eyes squeezed shut and mind focused. “Elune,” she thought pointedly, “shield us from this attack. Save your us, your children, to fight for another day in your name.” Her eyes remained unopened as she clenched her fists and prayed harder than she had ever prayed before. Of course, she revered Elune every morning and every evening without fail. She attended blessings by the Sisters often. But in this moment, she believed even more than she had before and her faith was unshakeable as she threw herself before the demonic strike and before her goddess’ mercy. Her heart raced as she heard them approach closer and closer, Rigel gave a roar and then - thump. Thump. Thump. The ground shook a little with each blow she felt. Uneasily, she opened her eyes to find herself, Rigel and the injured priestess sealed in an aura of bright white moonlight. It had hit the incursion with such a force they’d been flung off their feet, landing right at the other end of the road. The smaller demons with much more fragile frames appeared to have broken their bones and crushed themselves upon the ground at the distance, slightly singed from the burning moonlight. The two larger hauled themselves up and took quicker strides towards the pair and took to trying to punch the barrier down. At first, the huntress flinched at each hit, worried that her newfound ability would not be strong enough to hold them from the strength of their massive fists. But each thrash caused them to growl in pain as they too were burned from the aura that refused to crack under every smack. They were safe. They’d been looking for safety and they had found it.
A crowd of hippogryphs dropped in from behind the two pummelling the barrier. A group of priestesses emerged off their backs and began channelling moonbeams at them, each one hitting directly at their backs with a great force. They turned their attention to the party too late as the intensity and frequency of the attacks led one to collapse onto the ground dead, the other following shortly after. The shield dissipated.
“Aceso,” one priestess called to the one behind the huntress, “you are alive! We have been searching for you.” Aceso blinked, a mix of disbelief and amazement flooding her expression. Two of the Sisters hurried over and took Aceso arm in arm so she could walk properly. “Huntress, come. We will take you both to a sanctuary for healing.” Before they made their way to the mounts, she turned to the huntress.
“Who do I call the one who saved me, falore?” The huntress shook her head.
“I am Kalnor, huntress of Suramar.”
“You were able to work through Elune to rescue us both without training.” She pondered for a moment. “What of your other hunters?” Kalnor’s heart sank.
“They are dead. We were ambushed many times before I managed to reach the city gates.” Aceso’s eyes glanced over the area the barrier of moonlight once was, back at Kalnor and towards her Sisters.
“We shall mourn them soon enough. However, your faith and connection is strong.” She gestured towards the priestesses. “I believe Elune has just revealed to you another path.”
Year -9400
The priestess gazed out over the verdant green hills that rolled down Hyjal. It was a dazzling sunny day with a clear sky stretching out far beyond the forest ad she was content. The mesh curtains along her chamber’s balcony swayed in a delicate breeze, a nearby wind chime softly chinking in its sway. It clanked harder as her door swung open to reveal Aceso. 600 centuries on and in that time they’d both aged from young teenagers to much older women. The blessings of Elune kept the night elves from ageing past their prime yet Aceso had always held a sense of old wisdom within the twinkle of her eyes, poise well beyond her years in her stance and dedication to Elune that rivalled her older peers. She often would seek Kalnor within her chambers when the younger had slept in past morning prayer. The driving force of practical duty in harmony with her own natural talents made the pair a balance of ideals.
“Falore, it is good to see you. There are no prayers today.” Aceso smirked a little as she walked in to seat herself upon the small couch in the corner.
“I am not here to retrieve you, little Kal. There has been news from the High Priestess.” Kalnor’s eyes widened. Tyrande Whisperwind herself. She hurried over to sit beside her friend.
“Shan’do? Is she well?” Aceso chuckled and rested an arm along Kalnor’s shoulders.
“She is in perfect health. She has called for her priestesses to choose their best.” Kalnor’s brow furled in confusion. “A new order is being established as we speak: she calls them the Sentinels. They will be under the command of Shandris Feathermoon when our High Priestess cannot be present.” Kalnor knew Shandris, knew her very well. They were the same age and were born in the same village and both had been trained in archery. They’d both lost their parents in the war that had brought her to Aceso. It often left a bittersweet feeling deep in Kalnor’s stomach: the warm embrace of remembering encountering her dear friend, the guilty sorrow of losing her loved ones. Shandris too had faced a fate of living on after tragedy, becoming a prominent treasure of the kaldorei because of it.
“A fine choice, she is a worthy elf.” Aceso’s smile turned into a knowing one, baiting Kalnor into enquiring more and she took to the hook. “What is it?”
“These will be warriors: protectors of the kaldorei. They must be skilled in combat and have faith so strong that nothing could break it. I know of such a night elf whose abilities in both saved both our lives.” As the realisation that Aceso would be recommending her dawned, Kanlor’s mouth parted in an expression of awed shock. Aceso grinned. “It is time to dust off your bow, old friend.”
Year -975
As she began to wake, Kalnor coughed, specks of sand spluttering from her sore throat as she did so. The war in Silithus had been a tough one even for the Sentinel forces. She lay upon a stretcher within a hidden cave on the outskirts of the area, the small cavern filled with lines of injured warriors with varying degrees of severity to their wounds. As her eyes adjusted to the dark, she glanced down to see her torso had been bound in tight linen bandages soaked in healing lotions. She curved her body to crack a stiff spine only to have a sharp pain flash over her abdomen. She cursed bluntly. A male druid was tending to the patient to her right, pouring a warm broth into her mouth carefully and once she had finished, her turned to Kalnor. He was a handsome elf, she thought, long, deep green hair tied in a tidy bun and a slick beard lined his jaw. He lightly touched her linen with a large hand, allowing her to properly follow it up to his muscled arms attached to a chiselled shirtless torso. At least my carer is attractive thus making my recovery entertaining, she mused.
“Be still, falore,” he softly warned, “you’re still in a delicate state. I will do all I can to speed your mending.”
“Thank you for your aid, druid,” she gratefully replied. He reached to a water skin, helping her sip cooling water to sate the thirst and soothe the scratching sensation.
“It is an honour to be of help to a Sentinel,” she reached a hand to lift her chin, allowing her to drink easier. Once she had finished, her turned back to her stomach. “I wrapped the wound a few hours ago, it will be ready to be changed before supper.”
“I assume you will be feeding me later also”, she gave him a smug smirk, eyeing his body subtly as she did so. A purpleish blush flushed the druid’s face.
“If you feel you are unable to, I would gladly assist you.” He placed a hand over her forehead, “I feel no temperature so I believe you haven’t developed an infection. This is good.” Kalnor decided to relieve his mild awkwardness.
“What may I call my nurse?” She teased. He let out a laugh.
“I am Tavanar Owlcaller. What may I call my patient?”
“Kalnor Starblade.”
“Starry sky. A beautiful name.” Kalnor gushed a little inside. Tavanar gave a pleasant smile.
“Rest now, starry sky. Your glaive awaits your grip.”
*Falore - “Sister”.
*Shan’do -” Honoured teacher”, a title.

‘ bad fates do not always follow those that deserve them. ’ ( elune @ tyrande ! )
𝑺𝑶𝑭𝑻 𝑻𝑯𝑶𝑹𝑵𝑺 // always accepting memes!
It is more a stab in the back than consolation, truly, that these were the words her goddess would offer her. What am I supposed to do with it? It brought no one any closure, it did not lessen the wounds of the many losses her people suffered, it did not soothe their pains, nor did it allow for the peace of those left behind. Should they be grateful, then, that tragedy did not befall them because they deserved it, but merely because sometimes there was no rhyme or reason to how things happened at all?
It is not enough. She expected more.
A disappointment like this was not a simple thing to curb, and in a heart already filled to the brim with resentment and anger and guilt and pain, it needed no time at all to fester and turn into bitterness towards the goddess herself. Everything I did for millennia, I did under the guidance of your light. Look where it brought us. The words claw their way to her throat, but die upon her tongue before they are said. Silence smothers them, heavy and uncomfortable as the former priestess gazes upon her goddess with accusatory, darkened eyes.
“ Do you know how many I failed that day? ”  Her tone is level, cold rather than fiery, carefully controlled. Before a reply is allowed, she continues. “ I do not know even in numbers, much less in names. I know they were too many -- it is enough to know I failed them. ”
“ But they were not the sole people I failed, were they? How many have lived and died in your service before Teldrassil -- how many turned to you because I led them to? ”  A rise in tone, progressive and angry; resent at last catches up to her words, and Tyrande cannot ( does not try to ) measure words. “ My people died! They suffered one of the worst fates they could have, and save them as I tried, it was not enough. But I am not all-powerful. You are. I do not need a goddess to tell me they did not deserve it. I knew and loved them. I lived amongst them. I know, better than you ever will, that they did not deserve the terrible fate that befell them. ”
“ That is not my question. My question is where were you in our time of greatest need? ”

no but for real I have many issues with where the story is heading (and the sudden shift from elune always always having interceded for tyr.ande even when she didn’t want that but now suddenly it’s ‘she’ll deny you victory’ also as if she needed elune’s buff to tear off sylvie’s head honestly)
but I’ll take my crumbs and be content 1. her new look is cool even if the anime power shit is not aksjnfkajfnksdj 2. her entrance? fabulous 3. 'elune gave me her strength, the wrath is mine alone’ I CRY I love this so much 4. ‘I will take your head, banshee, just like I took his’ ‘nathanos...?’ ‘you didn’t know c: c: c: your master is keeping secrets from you c:’
after that idc but those specific parts???? spicy. I love to see it.

do you ever think about the fact ty.rande wasn’t prejudiced from the start, and that back in the wota trilogy she actively defends brox.igar, an orc, even though the other elves treat him like an animal, and that she does everything she can to help him? I think about that a lot....  and about her being able to be on friendly terms with thr.all even after the orcs and the nelves clashed...
do you ever think about how war changed that over time, to the point after garro.sh’s reign as war.chief, during his trial some of the arguments she presented were against the entire race and not only his actions? do you ever think that even then, seeing them as enemies alone, she still did not see them as dishonorable, to the point her bet in the war of thorns was that saur.fang would repay her mercy with mercy towards her people? do you ever think about how after teldrassil burned, even that changed and none of her original good will to them remains? do you ever think about how the only reason she did no harm to thra.ll (and c.alia and b.aine) in sh.adows rising was because of their past friendship? I have many thoughts about all of that...

BUT ALSO LULLY MENTIONED IT AND I ALSO WILL NEVER FORGIVE LEGION FOR NOT GIVING US THE STORMRAGE REUNION WE DESERVED!!
on tyrande’s part, I don’t think her reaction is too far off. she has openly said it was a mistake to free illidan all those years ago, and she never wanted anything to do with him ever since wc3 when they all agree to go on different paths. like, people going after him in tbc? good for them she’s not getting involved. even in legion, while I do think we were robbed of interactions, tyrande herself would not try to talk to him or anything. I think she cares for him in a way, like I think alex cares for dw in a way, like, as people who were very very dear to them but who lost their trust completely, and in tyrande’s case with illidan, someone who followed a path she cannot understand or come to terms with (or couldn’t, back in legion. I think her feelings may have changed since then). I just think there was a lot to be done with them in legion and they never get the chance to interact EVEN when they’re in the same place and that’s... just wrong
but the same goes for illidan and malfurion. illidan genuinely demonstrates he wanted to let go of the past and try to make amends with his brother. it’s not easy, and I don’t think he thinks it would be, and there’s a lot of hurt on both sides, because malfurion’s choices in regards to him have often been hurtful too. but he wanted to make amends and to have them work together for a greater goal is what should have happened, because it is what both of them would do. illidan would work with pretty much anyone (xe’ra dni) in order to stop the legion, ofc he’d work with mal.
and with everything between the three of them going on since like, forever, the least we should have was some resolution in that regard. they don’t need to necessarily be on good terms, because I think that’d demand a long time, but to be able to idk, have some closure and move on, that’s something that should’ve happened.

but also since I’m talking faction conflicts I think it’s a fine moment to point out tyrande, night warrior or not, will NOT forgive the horde for what they did. not my take on her at least, because her resenting them and being out for blood is just so very in character for her without any ‘power corrupts’ nonsense or whatnot.
tyrande can be nurturing and caring and loving and gentle but she’s also ruthless and blunt and harsh. what you see of her has always depended on who you are, way before teldrassil. she holds grudges for thousands of years, but she’s also someone who is always giving her everything to people who are on her side.
when it comes to the horde, tyrande has long stopped believing peace would ever be possible. when varian decides not to go after the horde, this is her stance on it: that’s all fine and good for now, but it won’t last. she was capable of working with the horde when necessary, but she was never friendly towards them, and the friendly relationships she’s formed with some of them (thrall) are an exception.
tyrande has lived long enough she’s unable to believe everyone can change for the better. some people can, yes, but hoping all of them will become better is naive in her opinion. and sometimes that naivety just has too high a price for an attempt to be worth it.
she didn’t go out of her way to destroy the horde before, but she most certainly does after teldrassil. it is in part why she becomes the night warrior in the first place, not a result of it. I’ve said it like a thousand times before but my take on her is that unless you were not with the horde when teldrassil burned (like thrall) the only way she wants to see you is dead. she will not forgive, and she will not forget, and sylvanas is not the only one to be blamed as far as tyrande is concerned. if you were with the horde and didn’t go against her, then you were part of that too and tyrande would like to see you dead in the bloodiest possible way.
still, her stance has shifted from embracing the entirety of the alliance as her side since teldrassil too. like I said, tyrande gives herself a lot to those who are on her side. since becoming part of the alliance, she’s spared no effort to stand for them. but what she received in return hasn’t gotten even close to it, it was less than the bare minimum.
gilneas she still counts as close allies, but for the most part it’s only the kaldorei she’s concerned with now. if stormwind was so eager to hold saurfang’s hand and side with the horde, they can go to them when they next need help.

good afternoon I’m here to talk shadowlands today (but only the parts I like):
in the night fae campaign, tyrande agrees to let you help save night elf souls sent unjustly to torghast/the maw. for my portrayal, this is not a given. she will not trust someone affiliated with the horde to do something so important, and she doesn’t care to hear what you may have to say about making things right. I personally think she’d be iffy even towards people from the alliance, depending on who they are. if you’re a nelf you’re good, if you’re gilnean you’re probably good, but the rest? not necessarily.
alleria? I can’t decide what she’s doing while everything’s on fire. taking a vacation in elwynn forest maybe. y’all can save the world this time, she’ll pass (I don’t blame her tbh look at this shitshow)
I think tiffin is the one I have a better structured sort of idea for shadowlands? she died many years ago, but the ascension process seems to be like... not easy? so she was in bastion for a while and ultimately she ascended as a forsworn because she would not let go of her memories. still, she’s one of those who followed devos without knowing about the mawsworn, because what devos intended and what they believed they were doing (reforming a flawed system that forced them to let go of what was important to them and gave them strength in life) is something she’d absolutely fight for, but she was never a ‘the end justifies the means’ type of person and siding with the jailer forces isn’t something she’d do. so once the kyrian campaign progresses and the kyrian realize change in their path is necessary, I think she’d no longer see a reason to oppose them.
alex should go to shadowlands but I’m still figuring that out. I do believe after the news from ysera she would want to see her sister again, and even before that, with the huge problems going on and all, I think she’d try to do her part to keep the universe safe. even initially, when it comes to just saving the kidnapped leaders --- she cares a lot for thrall, and I think she’d like to help.
nalice wants nothing to do with the shadowlands, thanks
kelantir is in bastion, but she’s not one of the ascended. she died fairly recently so she’s not an angel yet. unlike tiffin, who I think would want to keep all her memories, because even the bad things are important to who she ended up being, I think there are things kelantir would maybe like to forget, but they weight on her too much for her to be able to do so, even then.
come find her chilling in bastion (maybe helping to save the universe too, probably)
lorna would go to the shadowlands to help tbh. if taelia and calia got there later, lorna can too -- except I don’t think she’d be content to wait in oribos, she’d want to actually go help. given she’s not a champion with an ability to enter and leave the maw at will, she wouldn’t go there I guess, unless someone took her with them. but in the covenants and etc she’d definitely go help. and if we get some info on how to fuck up sylvanas’ plans on the way that’s all the better.
besides, if sylv ran away to the shadowlands it’s a joke gilneas wouldn’t send someone. look at what they did in legion. let lorna be that person thanks.

What would Tyrande's reaction be concerning members of the Horde that openly opposed the destruction of Teldrassil?
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MUSES // thanks for indulging me Steph ♡
It would be very different from her attitude towards the Horde as a whole. Ultimately, Tyrande’s resent is so generalized because that’s not something that happened --- people either actively took part on it or passively watched as it happened, and neither of those is good enough. Standing and watching does not excuse them, and frankly, even before Teldrassil burned, the Horde’s entire plan was based on deception to attack Teldrassil and take Darnassus when it would be mostly civilians, which is not something Tyrande takes kindly to either. War is war, and innocent people do lose their lives, but to actively try to attack a city when  you led its defenders to be somewhere else and the people there don’t actually fight those wars, when the actual warriors are somewhere else because of your plan, it’s cowardly and cruel. There is no honor in that, and while Tyrande doesn’t go around preaching about honor like some people,  it was absolutely something she valued. Like, she never believed in peace with the Horde, but neither did she think the Alliance had to hunt them and wipe them out; they were enemies, but it was different from like, the Legion, which really is just an enemy to be defeated. She held some respect for them, in spite of everything. Post-Teldrassil, there is none.
And furthermore, even towards someone who wasn’t part of either of those things, if after that they still consider the Horde worthy and still embrace it and are part of it, well, she won’t hesitate to fight them either. The only difference would be she’s a lot more amenable to them than to those who did nothing, and to some extent she’d still be willing to listen and/or talk depending on the situation (and their approach), but if it comes down to a fight and they’re with the Horde, she’ll have no regrets about killing them too.
As to how she’d react in the moment, if they opposed it there and then, I think immediately nothing really changes, because Tyrande is concerned with her people then, with their safety, and even fighting the Horde is secondary to that --- it’s getting as many civilians they can out of there, saving as many of the few soldiers who bravely defended Ashenvale and Darkshore and Teldrassil as possible. In Elegy, it’s shown she accepts Darnassus is lost before the tree burns, although she believed it would be conquered and occupied, and as much as this hurts her, it is still secondary to the wellbeing of her people and the grief she already feels for anyone who’d have to stay in a city conquered by the Horde. And then and there, when the World Tree burns, it’s still people she’s most concerned with.
Nevertheless, regardless of how successful they were in trying to prevent the destruction of Teldrassil, it would likely make her somewhat less extreme in her views on the Horde post-Teldrassil. Because as is, Tyrande does think they should all be wiped out, because they’ve tried tolerance and coexistence, and look where it got them --- Gilneas was conquered by Forsaken, Teramore was brutally destroyed, Teldrassil was targeted with cruel and cowardly attack. And it’s not to say what came before is less important, but rather that specially in regards to Teramore, which was destroyed in what was a war crime more than just war, I feel like there’d be the wish to consider the Horde as a whole maybe really wasn’t to blame, as it so directly resulted from Garrosh’s actions and everyone knows how Garrosh ended up. But with Teldrassil there’s no excuse for that. Sylvanas was the leader, but the Horde was not kept in the dark. Saurfang, who was considered one of their most honorable warriors, helped plan the attack on night elf civilians. There is no excuse that can be made here, it’s not a few of them, it’s everyone, even those completely different like Sylvanas and Saurfang, and how can there be tolerance after that?
But I say somewhat less extreme because, ultimately, they’d have agreed with this plan, even if they didn’t agree with the World Tree being destroyed. So it’s like, in her eyes, it’s doing the bare minimum, because regardless of the Horde’s conflict with her people, Teldrassil in itself, as well as the huge amount of life there well beyond night elves, as they were not the only race residing on the World Tree, it’s a lot more than even her people, it’s an unspeakable crime against the world and against nature, and so it is something everyone should try to prevent, in her eyes. But even if it is the minimum, clearly lots of people didn’t feel it was reason to try to stop the destruction of Teldrassil even then, so isudhsiahiudhfiau I think in the end she would acknowledge that effort and still hold some respect for those who tried, because for the rest of them she has only hatred and resent and disdain. This, however, doesn’t change that they’re still enemies and still attacked civilians, and she’d still murder them for that. If they were against both then she’d be more tolerant, perhaps.
